STATIC ADVERTISING GUIDELINES V1.0 JANUARY 19, 2014

Overview This document describes recommendations for supplying static DFT advertising for tablet and mobile publications.

Supplying as PDF Provided that PDF is exported correctly for tablet and mobile devices, it is the best container for text, vector graphics, and high resolution images. There are two different common practices for sizing - print dimensions, points as pixels

Using Print Dimensions Some publishers require that ads designed for tablet have the same physical dimensions as the print version as it makes it for the advertiser to use exactly the same layout as in print. They just have to export it differently. In this case, it is recommended to use 300 ppi resolution for images. This ensures that images have a high enough resolution for retina displays.

Points as Pixels In digital, most sizes are referred to in pixels. However, in PDF, all units are physical. As we now have multiple devices with the same pixel screen size but differing physical sizes, it is useful to simply map 1 point = 1 pixel. This physical size is much larger than a normal tablet device, but it makes the calculation easy. Adobe is now using this mapping in digital publishing layouts in InDesign. This means a normal iPad publication is 1024 pixels x 768 pixels or 1024 pts x 768 pts using this mapping. Our recommendation then is to double the resolution of images as per Apple’s recommendations to make 2 pixels map into 1 pixel. This makes our recommended export resolution 144 ppi (pixels per inch).

PDF Technical Specifications for iPad (portrait example)

Digital Dimensions: 768 px W x 1024 px H (images should be 2x that size and scaled to fit) PDF Dimensions: 768 pt W x 1024 pt H (270.9 mm W x 361.2 mm H) PDF Minimum PPI: 144 ppi Minimum font size: 15 px (15 pt in PDF) Color: sRGB (export and convert all text, vectors, and images to sRGB) PDF Version: 1.7 Transparency: Transparency should be preserved - not flattened Blending Space: RGB PDF/X: PDF/X should not be used for tablet & mobile

Exporting PDF for tablet and mobile Our recommendation is to use the Adobe PDF (Interactive) export process in InDesign should this be available. This is the easiest way to create a PDF for tablet and maintains all hyperlinks in the PDF (although the publisher may require you to list out hyperlinks separately in addition to this). We recommend changing two settings in the default Export to Interactive PDF dialog: 1 Change the JPEG Quality to Maximum. This increases file size, but as the PDF is likely to be translated to another format on receipt by the publisher, it maintains the highest level of quality in the transfer 2 Change Resolution (ppi) to 144. With a PDF that is created to 1024 points x 768 points, this ensures resolution of placed images is exactly the size of an iPad retina display. This also works when exporting to another dimension such as for Nexus, Galaxy, or iPhone
