Hello and welcome to the Reno/Tahoe area! I am so happy that you’re here during the fall/holiday season. This is definitely my favorite time of the year. The leaves start turning and everyone has a building anticipation for that first dusting of snow. The holidays are celebrated by many great events here. Halloween with all the crazy parties in Tahoe and Reno makes for an adventure for all. There are always numerous special Thanksgiving dinners around and don’t forget Heavenly Holidays and SnowGlobe to truly celebrate Christmas and ring in the New Year. In this issue we have a wide variety of subjects our writers wanted to share with you. We’ll highlight the best events, different pub crawls in the area and a few local hot springs spots for a little rest and relaxation. We also have articles with suggestions of places to shop and things to do inside while you’re here, and, of course, don’t forget to check out our “What’s New” feature. Feel free to scan a few QR codes and visit our YouTube channel to preview the videos of the extraordinary experiences that await you. lose your eyes and imagine Lake Tahoe. If you’re a regular visitor to the region, your picture will be influenced by the shores you most frequent. New travelers may not have the luxury of conjuring an image so quickly or may struggle to arrive at anything beyond the vast blue.

Getaway Reno/Tahoe

Fall 2015

Think of your best Tahoe historical anecdote. Chances are the unfortunate Donner Party tale creeps to the forefront of your mind. But do you know the first resort built at the lake? Any idea when tourism as an industry commenced along the azure water’s shores, how or why? Pre-dating the rise of the resort and leisure culture, many of America’s greatest 19th-century landscape painters visited the region, creating

works that generated a romantic impression of the West and made Tahoe synonymous with freedom and progress. After luxury vacationing became fashionable — and viable given developments like the railroad and automobile — the demand for private residences blossomed, inspiring property owners to call upon talent like Frank Lloyd Wright to design a Summer Colony.

Thanks to a new Nevada Museum of Art exhibition, you can stroll through 200 years of creative and cultural production related to Tahoe and learn how historical and art historical trends inform the region’s evolution. TAHOE: A Visual History invites you to experience the beloved lake like never before. Through the eyes of 175 painters, photographers, architects, basket weavers and sculptors, you can immerse yourself in panoramic landscapes, sail on turquoise waters and soar to breathtaking mountain views. As art creates an emotional connection to place, your experience will also leave you contemplating ways to help ensure this jewel of the Sierras stays healthy for generations to come. The first major art survey of historical painting, Native baskets, photography, architecture and contemporary art dedicated to Lake Tahoe, Donner Pass and the surrounding Sierra Nevada region, TAHOE: A Visual History combines historically significant cultural and art objects with contemporary works inspired by a shared reverence for the region. Nevada Museum of Art senior curator and deputy director Ann Wolfe curated the show of more than 400 artworks. “Art produced in and about a place helps define its cultural identity,” Wolfe said. “Without knowledge or shared understanding of a region’s art and history, it is impossible to celebrate or critically examine its contributions to the broader culture.” TAHOE highlights include the largest collection of Washoe baskets ever displayed in one place, a 6-by-10-foot painting of Donner Lake by Albert Bierstadt, and rare drawings by Frank Lloyd Wright for a 1923 “Summer Colony” at Emerald Bay that was never built. TAHOE: A Visual History is on view through January 10 exclusively at the Nevada Museum of Art, Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Visual Arts, E. L. Wiegand Gallery in downtown Reno. A 488-page book by the same name, co-published with Skira Rizzoli and distributed by Random House, accompanies the exhibition and is available for purchase in the Museum Store, along with many other specially made TAHOE wares.

Are you looking for something new and unique for your next vacation? Welcome to the Carson Valley!

s I descended into the valley from Highways 580 and 395, it was as if the mountains parted ways to allow me to see this majestic wonder and beauty. It was so unexpected! I wondered at the big, blue open sky and vast, green valley floor amidst a backdrop of unspoiled mountain vistas as far as my eyes could see. How is it that I had never been here before? It is absolutely stunning! Carson Valley is nestled between two mountain ranges and is just a 20-minute drive from Lake Tahoe and 45 minutes from Reno. Carson Valley’s “Rugged. Relaxed. Reachable.” brand plays host to any outdoor adventure you could desire. I love exploring a new place and in Carson Valley there are four towns, each offering their own distinctive characteristics and historic significance. Take a walk down Main Street Gardnerville and discover restaurants that include authentic Basque cuisine and locally owned shops where you just might find that perfect something to buy for someone who has everything. Then stroll down charming Main Street Minden and appreciate being able to learn about the history of a specific building or park. You will feel like you stepped into a Norman Rockwell painting. In Genoa, feel nature and history at your fingertips and step back in time in Nevada’s first permanent settlement to have a drink at Nevada’s oldest thirst parlor, Genoa Bar. Take a short drive to Topaz Lake and discover an area so peaceful yet beautifully dramatic surrounded by mountains. Choose from a multitude of activities including fishing, boating, camping and more. I took a glider flight over the valley with SoaringNV, the world’s premiere location for flying gliders. I was amazed at how vast, unprocessed and serene the valley is. The pilot and I rode the wave of thermals along the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains and clipped a view of Lake Tahoe. It

was exhilarating! I took my family on an afternoon filled with fresh, crisp air at the Carson Valley Golf Course where we tried our feet at FootGolf. Who knew a game of golf played with a soccer ball could be so much fun? What a blast! As an avid hiker, I put the Carson Valley trails to the test and they did not disappoint. I really appreciated how accessible and unrestricted they all are. There is no traffic to wade through to reach any trail you are in the mood for. Hike the challenging trail above Genoa, or take a mellow scenic jaunt through the Pine Nut Mountains. No matter which you choose, you will love that you can either hike, bike, walk, motorize or catch a horse or two on any trail you like. I love the Carson Valley and know you will too. rowing up I had the moving experience of seeing horses up close, often. They would walk behind my house sometimes, cars would have to stop to let them cross and you could see them on the hillside in the outskirts of town. I loved them. I would envision myself in some sort of Wild West adventure all the time; chasing down bank robbers, riding into the sunset with a cowboy or taking an adventure with my trusted hooved companion. I never did get the chance to assist in a high-speed bank robbery horse chase, but this summer I did get to indulge my inner cowgirl up close with my favorite childhood animals.

When we arrived at Borges Sleigh & Carriage Rides in Lake Tahoe we met our host Dwight and our carriage horse, Duke, both were so friendly and welcomed us to the area. Duke was a Belgian horse with a great personality. I was thrilled to learn that more than half of the carriage horses are rescues from other locations and have found a great new home. Each horse wears custom, handmade horseshoes with additional padding to ensure they have comfort with each step when touring guests. We hopped into the carriage, Dwight gave Duke a ‘giddy up’ and we were off on our ride to enjoy the scenic views. Each click of the hoof onto the sunny ground made me think of how beautiful the sleigh rides must be in the winter seasons, as the horses walk through fresh fallen snow and the mountains sparkle. In all seasons your guide will take you on a tour of Tahoe’s stunning tree line, beach and the shimmering waves of the lake. People from all over the world come to enjoy this experience as a romantic ride for a couple or a fun way to tour the area with a group of friends. The carriage is also a charming addition to a wedding. Dwight even shared stories of engagements that happened during the rides. Along the path we stopped for a drink at the newly renovated The Landing Resort and Spa and later took some photos with Duke in the sand enjoying the picturesque view of the lake. You can book your customized experience with Borges Sleigh & Carriage Rides on their website at sleighride.com.

a video about Borges Sleigh & Carriage Rides

After taking the carriage ride, I felt more comfortable and even more intrigued by horses and wanted to take the reins. So I visited Sheridan Creek Equestrian Center in Gardnerville to saddle up. The drive there was absolutely magnificent through Carson Valley, particularly Jobs Peak and the surrounding hillside. As soon as I pulled up I was captivated by the stable full of horses and quickly met Jennifer, my teacher for the afternoon. Jennifer introduced me to the horses in the stable, including Max who is 32 years old and the perfect fit for first-time riders and children, even as

young as four years old! In the back of the hall, Chief, a stunning brown and white horse, greeted me and was mine for the day. Jennifer and Chief made me feel right at home as I climbed into the saddle and entered the riding arena. I learned so much in my first lesson and had no idea how intuitive horses are to your every move. Even if I just looked left or right Chief could feel it and by the end of the lesson we were barrel racing… Well, more trotting than racing. The center also offers excursions ranging from 1- to 2-hour packages, each are custom created and unique to the group and day. For a lesson or to book an excursion visit sheridancreekequestriancenter.com. Being lucky enough to grow up with horses around me at all times, but at arm’s length, was brilliant. Encountering these magnificent animals one-on-one was so remarkable, a dream come true.

As Good As New For more than seven decades, Sharkey’s Casino has been a historic landmark to not only beautiful Carson Valley, but for much of Northern Nevada. After being closed for five months of renovations, the property has re-opened and is better than ever! The local character is still intact, with exposed original brick and wooden beams accenting the old-time feel. Famed memorabilia was brought back to life and adorns every wall with nostalgic photos of Sharkey and his posse including Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings. Check out the antique slot machines lining the entrance of their new Jackpot Café, where the best prime rib dinner can still be found on the menu. For a fun photo moment, snap a picture with the original Sharkey’s Casino sign hanging above their Silver Dollar Bar. sharkeyscasino.com Considered to be one of the best attractions in Lake Tahoe, the M.S. Dixie II is the perfect place to enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Tahoe and now it’s even better! This historic Mississippi paddle wheeler received some TLC including a new coat of paint inside and out, a new back bar on the second deck, plus an expanded retail outlet so you can buy even more souvenirs. Plus, her five new John Deere engines will keep her running smooth through Tahoe’s glassy blue waters. This season, make a reservation for their Daytime Scenic Cruise or a Sunset Dinner Cruise to see for yourself and enjoy this one-of-a-kind experience on the lake! zephyrcove.com

Breaking New Ground Situated in the heart of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., is the Chateau, near Heavenly Village, where you should notice 20,000-square-feet of new stores and restaurants! This new development is the first completed phase of the new Zalanta Resort at the Village. Visit some of my favorite places in the Chateau including Powder House Stateline where you’ll find the largest selection of goggles you’ve ever seen! Plus, get the season’s best gear hookups whether you’re hiking the trail or riding the powder. Treat yourself to an organic goody at Sno Fro Yo, South Lake Tahoe’s newest and only self-serve frozen yogurt shop! Get styled at Bonanza Boot & Leather featuring more than 300 pairs of unique cowboy boots, then head over to Mahogany Smoked Meats for the best jerky you’ve ever had. Your last stop should be at McP’s Taphouse Grill. With 40 beers on draft and live music almost every night, you’ll be glad you finished your day with an Irish toast! As you can see, there’s no shortage of new and fun things to try in the Reno/Tahoe area. I leave you with three words, “Try something new!”

Live music is a big reason why Reno and Lake Tahoe are vacation destinations. With the summer festival season in the rear-view mirror, it’s a great time to head to a concert where there are many terrific venues and musical options to see and hear headlining bands. To say the Grand Sierra Resort’s Grand Theatre looks like a million bucks is an understatement. The venue’s renovation actually is estimated at about $10 million. There are more than 2,700 spacious seats, a large orchestra pit area for dancing and brand new lighting and sound equipment. It opened with a Billy Idol concert Aug. 7. This winter it will present many big shows, including Godsmack Nov. 7 and Melissa Etheridge Nov. 20. The Grand Sierra Resort’s elaborate 25,000-square-foot LEX Nightclub offers pool parties, a glass dance floor, nine skylights and three bars. There are plenty more concert options in the Reno/Tahoe region. Downtown, the Silver Legacy Grande Exposition Hall houses up to 1,600 concert goers and has a state-ofthe-art sound and video system. Post-grunge rockers Collective Soul plays Nov. 6. And, it will be the site of some of the biggest country

Just last week my sister and I explored the fun and fashionable stores dotting Reno’s Riverwalk, Cal Ave and MidTown Districts. It’s always great to stroll the streets and support local businesses giving this area that hip, entertaining personality it's known for. If you’re on a mission to find the perfect gift or just doing a little window shopping, there are many spots sure to fit your fancy. Looking for a good book? Sundance Book Shop occupies a historic home with each room dedicated to a different genre of interesting reads. They have a nice selection of children’s books, an alcove with locally made gifts and often host author events where guests sip a steamy espresso while they listen to their favorite stories read aloud. If it’s clothing and jewelry you’re after, several outlets feature their own individual styles. Known as Nevada’s t-shirt brand, Reno eNVy offers cool and clever styles representing the many different aspects of the area’s distinct personality. Their newest “Battle Born” collection embodies that true Nevada pride with a selection of tanks, shirts, hoodies and more. Culture is one of my favorites carrying modern fashions and accessories. Plus they have a wall filled with funky socks and shades. Regarded as one of the top shops for Burning Man attire, The Melting Pot World Emporium offers cutting-edge couture, extreme tribal and casual street wear from > Never Ender
