T
he fall and holiday seasons have so much diversity and experiences to offer in the Reno/Tahoe area. My family and I love this time of year. What is often referred to as “local summer,” we love that the weather is still warm, the lakes and streams are no longer just snow melt, and the crowds are a bit, well, less crowded. This season ends with the holiday rush, long nights of winter and (fingers crossed) a good blanket of snow. We have really tried to fill this issue with great ideas no matter the weather. First, we have a selfdescribing article dedicated to All-weather Fun. Don’t forget to Mark Your Calendars and checkout Now Trending to find out what’s new. If you’re a foodie, we tell you the best places to eat all you can handle in Big Bites, romantic date spots in Couples, Cuddles and Cocktails, and don’t forget Drinking and Dining with the Dead for a rundown of the most spooky haunted spots! Our Fall Foliage and Holiday Gift Guide will get you in the spirit. And for the adventurous, don’t miss our editorial about all things aloft in the area. Finally, nothing says Reno/Tahoe this time of year like being outside next to a firepit. Our cover story lets you in on some toasty favorites!

Mission Control By Kylie Rowe
A RENO ORBIT THROUGH SCIENCE, ART AND SPACE
T
he science of space gives us an understanding of Earth and our galaxy. It’s one area of study that many love to learn about. I’ve always been a nerd in need of a creative outlet, so it’s incredibly fulfilling to experience the trend that mixes art and imagination with scientific methods. Catch a glimpse into the vast phenomenon that is the universe through my orbit around four of Reno’s museums that have a place for space. First Stop: The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum My spacecraft path started Under the Stars and inside the night cave at The Discovery thanks to Bretzlaff Foundation, Inc. Several events year-round give us educational programming to advance our science knowledge as it pertains to space. My favorite annual event is when The Discovery hosts tours of the Northstar with Tony the Star Guide, and every April they collaborate to host the Astro-Poetry contest where our K-12 students combine science and art to enter for a chance to win telescopes or binoculars. nvdm.org Second Stop: Fleischmann Planetarium The Planetarium was my second landing in Reno’s orbit through space. The building located on the campus at the University of Nevada has a fulldome design holding an IMAX circle theatre where the night sky comes alive. It was a tough call between black holes and other extreme planets, but I couldn’t pass up the deep five feature on the secrets of Saturn. After the show, I walked through the space mountain-esque tunnel leading you toward the complimentary exhibit that models Earth in orbit and its relation to other bodies in the Milky Way. planetarium.unr.edu
12 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
Third Stop: National Automobile Museum In Reno’s third place for space, I jumped aboard a simulator pod complete with touchscreen and joystick to fly a spaceship and drive a surface rover. These state-of-the-art video games (with actual NASA reconnaissance data) are attached to large flat-screen visuals and surround sound that convinced me I was an astronaut inside the cockpit of a spacecraft. It’s huge news that our nationally acclaimed automobile museum is now home to this permanent installation where we can all Be the Astronaut thanks to the William N. Pennington Foundation. automuseum.org Fourth Stop: Nevada Museum of Art Finally, I walked into the pre-launch for a oneof-a-kind art installation igniting into space. The Nevada Museum of Art partnered with artist Trevor Paglen and aerospace engineers to build and eventually launch the largest sculpture and performing arts piece on Earth. To view this art in its entirety, after a journey up the museum stairs, I found myself in complete awe; this magnificent sphere will take the form of a satellite and go into a low-Earth orbit in 2018. It will appear as a bright star in the sky and give us a reason to look up to space with a renewed sense of wonder. nevadaart.org In an orbit through these four museums, I found that space is the intersection between science and art. With the experiential programming and numerous exhibits, the scientist in me had to test them all. I found the night sky come alive, turned into an astronaut, and later stood fingertips away from a satellite launch in countdown. By embracing science, its culture of learning, and the inspiration of art, Reno creates a sense of place and launchpad into our galaxy.

FALLING INTO FALL
Lake Tahoe is famous for its brilliant blue and green hues. During autumn, everything shines just a bit brighter when the colors of the Sierra seem to come to life. Gold, red and orange illuminate the forests and photographers enjoy the extra special treat of capturing the foliage of the season.

L L - W E AT H E R F U N SHOULDER SEASON ACTIVITIES N O M AT T E R T H E T E M P E R AT U R E By Natasha Bourlin
If you’ve always wanted to visit Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, free tours of Kimmie Candy Factory are the next best thing. Candy connoisseurs take up to 40 people through the factory at set times Monday – Friday. kimmiecandy.com Shoulder season — aka autumn — around here means it can be 80 degrees one day, then snow the next. Sometimes that happens in the same day. So, do you hunker down at home and wait to see the sunlight, bundle up and tackle the temperatures, or plan to do something weatherproof indoors? Don’t let the seasons rule your fun, here are some entertaining options for all ages, no matter the weather.
In Carson City, the Nevada State Museum takes visitors on a tour of state history going back to times when mammoths roamed the Great Basin. There’s even a skeletal display of a mammoth found in the Black Rock Desert. Other permanent exhibits include a tour of an underground mine, and a reconstructed cave illustrating how the first humans in Nevada lived. Bring the kids and show them where coins were created in the late-1800s at the original Carson City Mint. nvculture.org Reno’s Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum has a life-size cast of Sue, the most complete and well-preserved tyrannosaurus rex ever found, on display through January 15, 2018. Interactive exhibits surrounding the 42-foot-long find will teach about paleontology and the dinosaur’s past. While there, kids can also explore the Cloud Climber, an educational jungle gym of sorts, the Truckee River, Da Vinci, astronomy and so much more. nvdm.org Circus Circus Hotel Casino Reno recently invested $2 million into their Carnival Midway adding three new carnival-style games, a new stage for their circus acts, and a fresh, new look and feel to the area. They also launched the new XP Arcade with 40 arcade games

and two party rooms. All the new games run on an ATM-style card that can be preloaded instead of having to dole out cash incessantly to kids of all ages. circusreno.com Once the leaves start changing, take a hike — through the fall colors in the Galena Creek Regional Park that is. There are multiple trails winding through a riot of color as the trees turn with the seasons. galenacreekvisitorcenter.org Rev up your engines at Need 2 Speed in Reno, where their electric karts go up to 45 miles per hour. Breathe easy as they produce no emissions while you race around the indoor track with a smile plastered on your face. For a more psychedelic experience, try visiting on weekend evenings when the entire place glows under black lights. need2speed.com

ADVENTURE
Speaking of surreal lighting, bowling becomes a fun adventure at Coconut Bowl in Sparks nightly when the black lights come on and the music is turned up. Glowing pins, balls, shoes and a light show dance across 40 lanes starting at 5:30 p.m. If you prefer to perfect your game in regular lighting, bowlers of any age and skill level can also do so daily. wildisland.com Aim at a different target at Wasting Arrows Indoor Archery in south Reno, where you can tap into your inner Robin Hood or Katniss with some coaching by the experts. This family owned indoor archery range is run by certified instructors who make you feel pretty darn impressive, even primeval, as you draw back the bow and take aim. Equipment is rented or sold on-site. wastingarrows.com No matter your age, if 30,000 square feet of play space sounds appealing, head to the Boomtown Casino Hotel Fun Center where a daylong mission of fun can be easily accomplished. Well over 100 video and prize-awarding games, a bounce house, flight simulator, beautiful antique carousel, Ferris wheel, air hockey and pool tables, bowling and a mini golf course — some of which are open 24 hours a day — make for hours of entertainment during questionable weather. boomtownreno.com
If your kids are climbing up the walls with boredom, let them do it on one that’s meant for it. Whitney Peak’s Basecamp in downtown Reno touts the world’s tallest climbing wall on the building’s façade. Inside, find climbable boulders and a spot for little ones to practice negotiating upward routes. whitneypeakhotel.com Follow the steps of Kit Carson along the Blue Line Trail, a historic and educational walking tour in Carson City. A blue painted line and bronze markers dot the sidewalk along the trail, found easily with the help of the downloadable Visit Carson City app that tells you in textual or narrative form about the route’s points of historical interest. See and learn about the 1800s homes of some of Nevada’s most notable era characters, including the Governor’s Mansion, along with some of the prominent businesses that paved the way to the Nevada we know today. visitcarsoncity.com Summer has gone, so bounce away the seasonal blues at EZAIR Indoor Trampoline Park and Laser Tag Arena in Reno. Launch into the air twirling or flipping, knowing you’ll land safely in an airbag, or jump between the multitude of trampolines that line the floor and walls. Their laser tag arena can fit up to 30 players and is complete with special effects. ezairsports.com Get your art fix at the Nevada Museum of Art, where you can take a class from the enormous array of subjects taught at the E.L. Cord Museum School. Stroll through the City of Dust: The Evolution of Burning Man or Unsettled temporary exhibits running through January. nevadaart.org
REN O TOUTS THE WORLD’S T A L L E S T C L I M B I N G WA L L
Expanding on the artistry, spend a couple of hours taking one of Art Spot Reno’s self-guided or docent-led walking tours. Interactive maps that can be downloaded on their website lead art-lovers to many public art installations around Reno, including some expansive street-art murals and the homes of many sculptures that made their trek to the Black Rock and back again on the Playa Art Trail. artspotreno.com Whether you put on layers and head outdoors, or play it safe indoors, these fun places will help fend off any seasonal blahs when the temperatures start to change.

THRILLS OVER RENO/TAHOE Fall is the best time to experience a bird’s-eye view of the region. Soar above the Sierra to see orange aspens dotting the mountainside, crisp shades of Lake Tahoe blues and snowcapped peaks. It’s breathtaking, not to mention there’s a level of thrill for every adventurer from relaxing glides to adrenaline-seeking fun. Here’s how you need to go up, up and away this season.

You feel like a bird when you fly with Hang Gliding Tahoe. This powered bird-like trike takes off at Carson City Airport. Get ready to experience Tahoe like you’ve never seen it before. I literally reached out and touched the clouds at 12,000 feet. Then the pilot dove, skimming just above the waterline. The 360-degree panoramic views are something you must see. Once you’re comfortable with the open air, the instructor will let you take control for some interactive fun. Open year round, their flight suits keep you nice and warm, even in winter. Book the Around Lake Tahoe for an unforgettable two-hour thrill. hangglidingtahoe.com

The Sierra generates the strongest mountain wave conditions and Minden remains the most sought after gliding location by sailplane pilots, with record-high altitude and long-distance soaring. Set your own record with SoaringNV at the Minden-Tahoe Airport. This is the purest form of flying. A glider has no engine and no propeller, so after a tow plane pulls you up, you’re released. The effortless float is a serene and peaceful feeling. My top pick is the Tahoe Sky Ride. For 45 minutes, sit back, relax and take-in those jaw-dropping views. soaringnv.com
3
Just next door is Skydive Lake Tahoe. Yes, you guessed right, skydiving. It’s not for the faint-hearted. If this is still on your bucket list, then this is the place to do it! Operating all year long, you won’t even realize you’re strapped to a tandem master cruising to an altitude over 12,000 feet and then falling at 120 mph, because you’ll be mesmerized by the lake views. (Okay, just kidding, but you will seriously love the views). This sensation is exhilarating. skydivelaketahoe.com

Learn to fly in one day with Sierra Aero, no prior experience necessary! I’ll never forget sitting in the cockpit of the single engine prop plane, switching the controls on the pilot’s command, taxing the runway, and then my Certified Flight Instructor Jeff says, “Alright, do you feel ready to take off?” I knew this was a handson experience, but didn’t realize just how interactive. If you want to feel accomplished and experience a buzz all at once, this is the way to go. I thought about a career change until the landing as my instructor had to take over. Practice makes perfect. Test your skills here. flytruckee.com

For those looking to reenact Top Gun for the most butt-kicking, extreme adventure then you must visit Sky Combat Ace. Based out of the Lake Tahoe Airport, this is one of the few places in the world where you can fly a stunt plane with a real fighter pilot. (Ask for Tex!) My most memorable moment was taking the controls flying into an inverted barrel roll, to see nothing but the bright blue expansion of the lake. With speeds up to 8 Gs, the entire flight is an incredible rush. Finish your aerobatic routine with an air-toair combat simulation and a dynamic low-level bombing run just above Emerald Bay, reenacting what it would be like in a real combat situation. Book the Adrenaline Rush. skycombatave.com

Couples, Cuddles and Cocktails By Britton Griffith-Douglas
HOW TO FIND ROMANCE THIS SEASON
You can feel the cool fall season blanketing Lake Tahoe and when it does nothing sounds better than a cozy, cuddly and desirable date night. There are so many dreamy options when choosing how to spend a night with your love: Wine by a fire, a walk along the shore or even just a drive together to enjoy the scenery. While there are a lot of activities and places to choose from, some local favorites really stand out as the best locations for an evening of love.
Who needs a night on the town when you can have a night on the water! Lake Tahoe’s M.S. Dixie II hosts the Sierra Sunset Dinner Cruise and checks all the boxes for the perfect evening. Traveling upon this beauty of a boat, you can enjoy views of Emerald Bay while taking in the picture-perfect sunset and sipping on delicious cocktails before entering the cabin for dinner. Although your date alone is the best company, guests will be happily surprised with live music while you enjoy your local and delicious meal. zephyrcove.com Being by the majestic Lake Tahoe is enough to set the mood on a night made for lovers. After a day in the sand or skiing down the glimmering mountains, nothing sounds more delicious than a warm meal with great company. My favorite restaurant is the Ciera Steak + Chophouse located in the MontBleu Resort, Casino and Spa. Begin your night with a classic cocktail in their beautiful bar area. Then snuggle up in a booth and enjoy meals that are shareable like the oysters rockefeller, pine nutcrusted sea bass, or the carpaccio of bison tenderloin. There are plenty of dishes to have a la carte including the cowboy ribeye and roasted long duck. This ambiance-filled dining experience is wonderful for a trip for two or for a great double date before a concert. The best part about Montbleu dining is the many after dinner options which include trying your luck at the poker tables, dancing the night away or retreating to your room for a nightcap. montbleuresort.com
When you drive through the Carson Valley you quickly learn that the best way to make steamy romance happen is to hop in at 1862 David Walley’s Hot Springs Resort. This gorgeous location in Genoa has five natural hot springs, several swimming pools and a full-service spa. All the cheeky checklist items you need to make a weekend getaway extra special. Take it easy and dine at the 1862 Restaurant and Saloon followed with a sunset bike ride. This one-stop location has everything you need to enjoy your down time and each other’s company. 1862davidwalleysresort.com These two words don’t usually make you think of love and romance but the eclectic Death & Taxes in Midtown Reno blooms candlelit desire with their cocktail classes. Cocktails 101, Bourbon 101, Agave 101 & Batching Cocktails — each event is perfect for a group event, special date night or a one-on-one learning session. Cheers to cocktails and kisses! deathandtaxesreno.com With great music, views, sandy beaches and beautiful sunrises, the Reno/Tahoe area offers amorous locations to stir up some passion. No matter where you go this cool season, you’ll be warm with love.

C A P I TA L MOMENTUM No, Las Vegas is not the capitol of Nevada! Nestled between Lake Tahoe and Reno is the quaint yet eccentric Carson City, the official capitol of the Silver State. Over the last year, revitalization efforts have been incredible with finalized projects including the new I-580 Freeway extension. Not only is the commute from Reno to Tahoe quicker, it gives you extra time to visit Carson’s new redeveloped downtown attractions. Enhancements include improved walkability, community spaces and bike access all in an urban forest feel.
Store fronts and restaurants are popping up left and right, including two of my new favorites. The Union is a combination eatery, tap house and coffee hub, created by Chef Mark Estee, who focuses on local ingredients and farm-to-fork cuisine. The industrial farmhouse decor is accented by white tile, brick and reclaimed wood to bring an eclectic vibe, just like the menu. Worldly flavors influence the menu, but I say go for their Basque-inspired dishes like the lamb bolognese. Their wood-fired pizza can’t be missed. For a #CarsonProud spirit, hop next door to Battle Born Social. This cocktail bar and tasting room focuses on
community support and meeting new friends. You won’t find TVs in this joint, as in the name, the focus is shareable small plates and local spirited cocktails to socialize over. Take your time and introduce yourself to your neighbor. Try the gin and tonic by the campfire with the charred Caesar. The crawfish mac + cheese is a comforting treat. Cheers! theunioncarson.com; battlebornsocial.com
CRAFTING CRAZE There’s been a boom of creative entertainment across the nation, starting with paint and sip and now DIY creative spaces for all ages and ability. FEND OFF T H E FA L L CHILL WITH FA B U LO U S FIRESIDE DINING By Natasha Bourlin
Flickering firelight is entrancing. Whether for reflection or romance, the rhythm of dancing flames creates an unparalleled ambiance, one that hasn’t escaped restaurateurs the world over. Taking the glow of candles a step farther, many establishments in our region serve food and libations fireside. Here are several to warm up to this season. Quaint and rustic are two descriptors that spring to mind immediately upon laying eyes on the Cottonwood Cottage in Genoa. Originally a hay barn when built more than a century ago, Cottonwood Cottage owners opened the restaurant, bar and venue in 2016 and made sure to incorporate reclaimed barn wood in the build-out as a reminder of the structure’s origins. A new outdoor fire pit will be revealed when the weather cools, but inside a cozy, stone fireplace invites guests to dine on their grill specialties and pizzas or imbibe at the four surrounding tables. During the holidays, Cottonwood Cottage celebrates with seasonal decor and swaps the tables for a more casual lounging area, where food is still accessible. It’s open Friday – Sunday, though it can be closed for private parties and events, so call first. Their marinated grilled tri-tip sandwich is a must for beef-loving guests. cottonwoodgenoa.com At Lake Tahoe AleWorX Taproom and Pizzeria in South Lake Tahoe, they work on the pizzas and food, you work on pouring your own beer. Yes, it’s a self-service situation at this craft brew hot spot, where their own beers are offered next to high-profile, out-of-area favorites and some fellow local brewers’ wares. Imaginative pizzas such as the zucca — a steaming creation comprised of butternut squash puree, mozzarella, ricotta, provolone, sage oil and fennel — sit alongside pizzeria standards such as the margherita. A bounty of ingredients to make personal pie perfection can only be bettered with fresh salads and brews enjoyed by their scenic outdoor fire pits. laketahoealeworx.com If you seek somewhere that makes you feel as if the Rat Pack may be strolling in any second, head to the Fireside Lounge in the Peppermill Reno. For more than 40 years, this neon-laden lounge has tempted tourists and locals alike with cozy booths, complimentary appetizers, their signature drink — a 64-ounce rum, vodka, cherry brandy and ice cream concoction dubbed the scorpion — and the glowing fire pit from which its name was born. Vintage Nevada vibe? The Fireside has it in spades. peppermillreno.com Photos this page: Red Dog Saloon, Virgina City; Next page: Genoa Bar and Saloon
FOOD & DRINK Fireside seekers need look no further than The Landing Resort & Spa on Tahoe’s south shore, home to Jimmy’s Restaurant and its acclaimed California and Greek cuisine. Fires glow wherever you look at Jimmy’s. Five glowing orbs on the patio feel as if they could top the Olympic torch, perhaps tributes to owner Jimmy Demetriades’ Greek heritage. Private dining alcoves each have their own fireplace inside, as well. Visit for happy hour from 3 to 5 p.m. daily and try fusion items such as Greek nachos with gigantes beans, kefalotyri cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole. thelandingtahoe.com
GUESTS CAN IMBIBE BY FIRELIGHT WHILE GAZING OUT AT AN OUTDOOR FIREPIT Bookended by immense log storage, the Lone Eagle Grille’s two-story, stone-constructed fireplace is stately. Perched atop is an eagle sculpture which looks at home amidst the grand wooden logs and beams that frame the alpine interior. Panoramas of Lake Tahoe from Lone Eagle’s Incline Village locale, the Sierra peaks and the Hyatt Lake Tahoe’s private beach are a masterpiece of landscape beyond the restaurant’s towering windows. Wild game and seafood are staples on the robust gourmet menu, which changes seasonally. Additional cocktail and food menus are available for those who prefer to take in the roaring fire from the lounge. A large outdoor fire pit resides just outside the restaurant’s windows, and is also open year-round for those that prefer a side of fresh air, no matter the season. loneeaglegrille.com

Executive Chef Tim Hmay at the Resort at Squaw Creek’s Six Peaks Grille uses locally sourced and sustainable ingredients to prepare his cuisine. The steakhouse features alpine peaks and a fireplace as majestic as the outdoors to decorate. While in any given dish guests may find produce and herbs grown in the resort’s hydroponic garden, they can be enjoyed fireside for a notable ambiance injection in the cooler months. destinationhotels.com/squawcreek Within Heavenly Village, no one has trouble staying warm, entertained or fed. At Azul Latin Kitchen, Adirondack chairs surround a large outdoor fire pit with the glistening lake as the backdrop. Additional tables offer fireside dining for dozens of others, not to mention an ideal way to thaw once the weather turns in Tahoe. Their healthier, California-style spin on fresh Latin cuisine furthers the heating process from the inside, out. azullatinkitchen.com Nearby in the Village is The Loft Theatre-Lounge-Dining, where you’ll be mystified by a magic show before making s’mores at their indoor tables with built-in fire pits. Award-winning shows preface Chef Frank Trotta’s mouthwatering Italian dishes like wild boar cannelloni and butternut squash tortellini,
with an encore of sizzling marshmallows sandwiched between graham crackers and chocolate prepared fireside. thelofttahoe.com At the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe, fireplace admirers have two magnificent options. Within the elegant Manzanita is a centerpiece fireplace that sets the stage for an exquisite culinary experience that rivals the ambiance. While the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with champagne brunch on Sundays, the dinner menu is exceptional. Set some time aside to peruse the vast wine list that is nearly as long as some classic novels. For more casual, yet refined and picturesque, fireside time, check out fireplaces in The Living Room, which offers libations and lighter fare. ritzcarlton.com Fireside dining options abound at Edgewood Tahoe. While awaiting a dinner table at the picturesque Edgewood Restaurant, guests can imbibe by firelight while gazing out at an outdoor firepit backed by breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe and Mt. Tallac. Nearby, Brooks’ Bar and Deck features two fire pits that are lit nightly. With the mood created, guests may just want to continue their fireside experience at the new Edgewood Lodge for an overnight stay. Grab cocktails and snacks from the Bistro Bar, then curl up in a comfy chair or sofa near the grand stone fireplace in the Lodge’s Great Room, or just outside where three fire pits beckon. edgewoodtahoe.com Fire up your culinary exploration this fall. Between the food and the flames, these enticing fireside experiences will fend off the frost once the weather cools.

BIG APPETITE, BIG CHOICES By Annie Flanzraich Photo opposite page: Louis' Basque Corner
GET R EADY TO OV ER IND ULG E AT NORTHERN N EVADA’S B O U NTIFUL RESTAUR ANTS The holidays are a season for overabundance, a time to delight in an overflowing cornucopia of family and friends. What better way to celebrate with the people whom you love than with a meal that’s (almost) bigger than your gratitude? In Northern Nevada, you can find big bites for every taste and every occasion at a not-sobig price.
BAS Q U E FO OD If you’ve got family visiting from out of town, take them for a true Nevada experience at one of the region’s Basque restaurants. While they chow down on oxtail (yum, seriously!) or sweetbreads, they can learn about the history of Basque culture in the Silver State. Check out Louis' Basque Corner or the Santa Fe Hotel in Reno or J.T. Basque Bar & Dining Room in Gardnerville for an epicurean tradition. Bring your appetite, as most Basque meals are served family style and include salad, beans, bread, sides, the main entree, and dessert. Don’t forget a picon punch (or two)! louisbasquecorner.com; jtbasquenv.com
Flavors! The Buffet at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino serves up American, Italian, Asian and Mexican specialties every night. On Friday nights the buffet turns to the sea with snow crab, San Franciscan style cioppino, oysters Rockefeller, shrimp scampi, and New England Clam Chowder.

On the south side of Lake Tahoe, the Forest Buffet at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe dishes up views of big blue from the 18th floor in addition to an overflowing menu. For a weekend treat, enjoy a champagne brunch Saturday or Sunday that includes three glasses of bubbly. silverlegacyreno.com; atlantiscasino.com; harrahstahoe.com
Taste a piece of Reno/Sparks history at two of the region’s oldest restaurants, both of which are located on Fourth Street. Casale's Halfway Club, run by matriarch Mama Inez Casale Stempeck, is the oldest continuously family owned and operated restaurant in Reno and possibly the state. When it comes to homemade, comforting, carby, cheesy Italian food, you can't do any better. The portions are more than generous, so either take the idea of a half order seriously or bring a group to share. About a fiveminute walk away is the Coney Island Bar, usually shortened to “The Coney” in casual conversation, which has been operated by three generations of the Galletti family since 1922. The Coney serves up lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday — Saturday and dinner on Wednesday nights. If you’re looking to feed a group of 20 or more, consider booking a private dinner party and for a special experience, make it a bagna cauda one. coneyislandbar.net B U F F E TS In other cities, the word “buffet” may conjure images of a pathetic display of lukewarm dishes. But not in Northern Nevada. Up here, the word buffet means endless epicurean possibilities all housed in one beautifully decorated space.

Toucan Charlie's Buffet & Grille in the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa recently underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation, which refreshed both the decor and menu. When you visit, check out the pho station and don't leave without a taste of the fresh-spun cotton candy.
A LL YOU CA N E AT S U S HI All You Can Eat Sushi, or AYCE to the neophyte, is another Nevada staple that’s worth the over indulgence. Almost every sushi joint in the region offers an AYCE menu that comes with appetizers, dessert and endless amounts of fresh-made nigiri, hand rolls, long rolls and more. In Reno or Sparks, check out one of Tha Joint’s two locations. Up in Tahoe, Fortune in the Montbleu Resort Casino & Spa recently started offering AYCE, in addition to American-Chinese cuisine that's fresh from the wok. Head right to the sushi bar and order up some rolls and sashimi — I suggest the Tahoe, volcano or the spider hand roll. thajointsushi.com; montbleuresort.com So, put on your eating pants (the ones with the elastic waistband). Drinking and Dining with the Dead A LOCAL TOUR OF HAUNTED BARS AND RESTAURANTS By Rae and Troy Matthews
Fall is a wonderful time to explore the greater Reno/ Tahoe area. The aspens are changing colors, the weather is nice and cool … and ghosts lurk around every corner. We love a good ghost story, so we set out to find the best places to eat and drink with the dearly departed. Genoa Bar and Saloon is “Nevada’s Oldest Thirst Parlor” that has operated continuously since 1853 and harbors a haunted history. The rustic cowboy charm, with Old West memorabilia on the walls and dust on the floor, is undeniable. Relax with a handcrafted cocktail and keep an eye on the green lamp behind the bar. Though always unplugged, the light has mysteriously switched on during important moments in the history of the bar — including when the former owner, Betty Carver, passed away. From there, you can explore the rest of the town with Genoa Historic Ghost Tours including a pass through the Genoa cemetery. visitcarsonvalley.org Featured Drink: The six shooter – Bulliet Bourbon, fresh orange juice, orange and Cock-N-Bull Ginger Beer.

Beautifully rustic and old fashioned, the Truckee Hotel is a must for visitors passing through the Sierra. Any traveling ghost hunter/foodie will appreciate the presence of Moody’s Bistro Bar & Beats in the hotel. This is the cornerstone of the booming Truckee food scene and the host of Truckee’s Haunted Historic Tours scheduled October 19 and 20. Most evenings you can order a “pre-prohibition” cocktail, soak in some live jazz, and indulge in fine dining before retiring for the evening in the centuriesold hotel. If you want an extra spooky treat, book a stay on the fourth floor, keep an ear out for some otherworldly sounds of a young child that reportedly haunts the halls of hotel. truckeehotel.com Featured Dish: Wild boar rack served with jalapeno grits, haricot verts, smoked peach jam and purple mustard. Established in 1862, The Washoe Club in Virginia City is the second oldest saloon in Nevada. Grab a beer or specialty cocktail downstairs while you wait for the ghost tour that happens every hour on the hour. The tour will take you upstairs to the second and third floors, which have been called the most haunted place in Virginia City (that's saying a lot). This place is so creepy it will remind you of stepping into the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, only the ghosts here are real. Guests find paranormal activity in their photos frequently, so take a lot of pictures on the tour. thewashoeclub.com Featured Drinks: Ghost iced tea, man in black and the blue lady are all spins on old classics. A delightful spot for paranormal investigators and history lovers alike is Virginia City’s Delta Saloon. Grab lunch and a drink, then check out the history of the saloon on the walls, including the infamous “Suicide Table” where three former patrons reportedly took their lives after losing their fortunes during poker games. Keep an eye on the stairs where the spectral image of a little girl likes to play hide and seek with guests. And you may hear phantom piano music coming from the old chapel upstairs. thedeltasaloon.com Featured Drink and Dish: The house-made suicide mary and the chuck wagon burger with all the fixings. Be sure to belly up to the bar at the Silver Queen in Virginia City. Here you can strike up a conversation with mustachioed Reverend James Matthieu, the “Pistol Packin’ Preacher,” to learn the history of the place. Yes, he’s a bartender, a reverend and armed. And he will marry you and your honey in the chapel at the back of the bar, that is if you’re comfortable with both living and deceased guests at your special day. Check out the photo album on the bar of supernatural appearances at previous weddings, then take the 28 uneven stairs to the terrifyingly beautiful old west hotel on the second floor to conduct a paranormal investigation. Pay particular attention to rooms 11 and 13. silverqueenhotel.net Featured Drink: Wild Horse Ale from the Great Basin Brewing Co. on draft. On a night out, we say the more the merrier, living status notwithstanding. And so, we toast to the dearly departed who may join us at our table!

J U S T SAY, “I LOVE CREPES!” By Meghan Burk
If you’re a Will Ferrel fan, then you’ll remember that scene when Ricky Bobby from Talladega Nights admits that he, too, loves “those really thin pancakes.” This was a funny tangent to my conversation with Clint Machamer, owner of Creative Crepes, Tahoe’s newest foodie favorite near Heavenly Village. These treats have bold flavors from savory to sweet, with breakfast options, too. Plus, it’s a fun experience as you watch the creations “fold” in front of you. Clint spent much of his adult life in Breckenridge, Colo., where he cooked at many types of restaurants. It wasn’t until he experienced the fun interaction of cooking while customers watched, that he fell in love with this passion. “It’s a fun technique and you’re not just creating food, you’re creating an experience,” says Clint. It was at this moment when he decided to venture out on his own. After mixing ingredients to invent a personalized crepe batter and numerous family taste tests, he finally perfected a unique recipe to go with both savory and sweet flavors. “I wanted something that would complement every ingredient on my menu.” Starting with a farmers market stand and then growing into a mobile Airstream, he couldn’t keep up with the demand. “This was bigger than I originally thought, and customer feedback was tremendous, so I pushed further.” Finding solace in the mountains, he called every ski resort across the nation to find
the perfect business location. The stars aligned and with just a U-Haul and no place to live yet, he relocated to South Lake Tahoe. Almost a year later, business is booming and life is good for Clint, who just bought a house and is getting married in October. As far as the crepes go, I’ve tried almost every flavor on the menu and then some, as you can create your own custom crepe. My favorites include the pesto turkey and Monte Cristo all made with premium Boar’s Head meats. For that sweet tooth, the strawberry shortcake with extra Nutella and Chantilly cream (homemade whipped cream icing) is my go to.

SPECIAL FEATURE
PINING FOR PINE By Heidi Bethel
Who doesn’t love a peaceful walk in the forest? The crunch of leaves and twigs cracking beneath your boots with every reviving step. The sounds and smells of nature busy living all around. Recently, I learned about a group committed to maintaining those cherished moments in the pines and I look forward to helping in their effort.
A HELPING HAND
The Sugar Pine Foundation started from a passion to save the beloved species from white pine blister rust, an invasive disease attacking the stems of five-needled pines in North America. Native to Asia, this plaguing fungus was introduced into the U.S. in the early 20th century and has since had devastating effects on forests around the country.
“We have a lot of people who come here and find places that are special to them,” Mircheva explains. “They are touched by places they love and want to give back.”
In an effort to curb the dramatic losses, the Sugar Pine Foundation began planting blister rust-resistant saplings in the area about 12 years ago. Today, they restore over 10,000 trees every year with the help of nearly 700 volunteers. Working with the United States Forest Service, California Forestry Association and USDA Placerville Nursery, they rehabilitate sugar pine and western white pine loss due to disease, fires, forest thinning projects and help with erosion control. “We have projects throughout the Tahoe Basin, Truckee and towards Reno,” said Maria Mircheva, executive director of the Sugar Pine Foundation. “With the support of cherished volunteers and partners, we are able to do a lot of good in areas that would otherwise suffer.”

Whether it’s a memorable hike up Spooner Summit, a mountain bike ride on the Tahoe Rim Trail or speeding down the slopes any one of the area’s great ski hills, chances are you’ve crossed the path of a tree that was planted in this effort.
Most local sixth grade students just finished their field trip to plant a tree or two. And, many area businesses have done their part in several hands-on forest stewardship initiatives. The reason you, dear visitor, are reading about the Sugar Pine Foundation is because they also have community plantings open to the public where everyone is invited to participate. “People love to come out with their families. They name their trees and do their own unique tree dance. We see many folks who come back and visit their trees. They really do become emotionally involved,” Mircheva adds. “Kids especially love getting their hands dirty and digging holes. It’s meaningful for all ages!” Sugar pine restoration is a piece to the bigger forest health picture creating a more resilient woodland for all to enjoy. For more information and a calendar of events, visit sugarpinefoundation.org.

SOUTH TAHOE STRENGTH
between diets, new fitness trends, the latest foodie recipes,
staying stress free and spiritual can sometimes be such a challenge. Especially when you’re away enjoying vacay! That’s why taking a holistic approach to our everyday health and healing is crucial. There are so many elements that make up a life that is happy and healthy — luckily we have a few local one-stop shops that align our spirit, body and minds.
Elevate Wellness Center in South Lake Tahoe provides a wide range of services and wellness options to keep our body healthy. Now open on Saturdays, they have experts in Chinese medicine and detoxifying massage treatments such as dry brushing and cupping. They also approach the mind-body experience through avenues like neuromuscular therapy, cranial therapy and chi nei tsang (a Chinese abdominal massage). Just walking into this wonderfully calming and healing atmosphere gives you a moment to really breathe and enjoy the smells of lavender and happiness. My favorite treatment was the detoxifying organic body treatment combining ancient techniques and modern luxuries. This incredible place will help you achieve balance and zen with their tea bar, detoxifying treatments and many opportunities for education for a happy and healthy lifestyle that lasts long after you leave. This serene getaway is the perfect spot for walk-ins. elevate-wellness.com

Staying in balance means we have to keep our bodies healthy and fit. It’s easy to pamper your body too, just walk next door into Omni Fitness. This place doesn’t just make your body feel like it has been healed, pampered and electric; your spirit leaves calm, relaxed and well. Sign up or drop by for classes like Ballet Barre Fusion, Hot Yoga, Slow Flow and even Zumba to really get your body moving. You can take home a souvenir from their retail shop filled with wares from Feather Me Orange, Haku Botanicals, Revive Tahoe and Bird's Eye View Lip Balm. omnitahoe.com Feeling great right after treatment is always a desire of guests in day spas, but it is also fabulous to be able to take your experience home. This is why I adore BioSpirit Day Spa. They offer fun products in their waiting room including makeup, scrubs, face masks and lotions. The services menu features many options to choose from such as organic facials, couples massages, lip renewals and moisture boosts. This is also the perfect birthday party, bachelorette party or just a fun outing with your best buddies. I cannot wait to book my next girls day filled with giggles, health and healing. massagetahoe.com

This best-kept secret is tucked away in beautiful Hope Valley, Calif., just 20 minutes from Lake Tahoe. It’s the perfect blend of cozy and comfortable relaxation for outdoor lovers hoping to spend time away from emails and cell phones. And by the way, you won’t find any TVs, internet or cell service here, giving you the opportunity to read that book you packed. (You know what I’m talking about!)
Unplug from everyday life at Sorensen’s Resort
Whether it’s exploring wildflower-filled trails in Hope Valley or taking a flyfishing lesson in the West Fork of the Carson River, Sorensen’s Resort is my chance to take in all the natural distractions. This is where locals go to unplug and unwind from the hustle and bustle of life.
Offering an ideal mountain experience, enjoy endless recreation every season. In the fall, explore a wilderness hike or nature walk on their array of trails then relax, sipping mulled wine or hot cocoa as you cozy up next to the campfire. Kick up some snow in the winter, crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing across the valley floor. Hosted workshops and other festivities are a special treat, from stargazing, to music, water coloring, photography and more, so be sure to check their schedule of events. Need to fuel those adventures? You’ll love the Sorensen’s Country Café. Serving three delicious meals a day, my favorite item on the menu is their signature beef burgundy stew complemented with a glass of red from their stock of fine wines. On your way out, pick up some memorabilia at their quaint gift shop to remember your already memorable time here. When you’re ready to plan your visit, check their real-time weather conditions on their website. They are now an official National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather station, giving you the most accurate weather and conditions for that bluebird fall day or perfect snowbound winter. Sorensen’s is also excited to announce their electric car plug-in stations, partnering with Tesla to support gas-free cars on the road and becoming a Supercharger location to help keep Tahoe blue and the Sierra green. VOTED TAHOE’S BEST PLACE TO STAY A TROPICANA ENTERTAINMENT PROPERTY
At Edgewood Tahoe, we've crafted new beginnings amongst a storied setting. Where daydreamers unwind in sand while adventurer-seekers explore the Sierras. And where both—loungers and roamers alike—are met with personalized service, unprecedented stewardship, and unparalleled accommodations. Edgewood Tahoe is more than an alpine Lodge, more than an acclaimed golf course, more than a serene spa. It is a setting for inspiration, a catalyst for adventure, a world-class destination to discover and enjoy. Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, designed by George Fazio in 1968 and later renovated by Tom Fazio, offers the premier setting of a championship caliber golf experience in the High Sierra. The course offers a choice of four sets of tees ranging between 5,343 - 7,529 yards. The Golf Course has been consistently selected by Golf Digest as one of “America's 100 Greatest Public Courses,” and has attracted some of golf’s greatest players, including Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson, John Daly, and Lee Trevino. Edgewood has played host to the USGA's 1980 US Public Links Championship and 1985 US Senior Open Championship, and has been the home to the annual American Century Celebrity Golf Championship since 1991. The Tahoe golf season is typically from May to October. View more at EdgewoodTahoe.com/Golf or visit the Golf Shop inside the Clubhouse. Nestled in a private, yet expansive area on the second floor of the Lodge is The Spa at Edgewood Tahoe—an inviting 8,500 sq. ft. space that offers guest uninterrupted serenity amongst a peaceful and inviting atmosphere. With a stunning streamlined design aesthetic influenced by the innate beauty of the area's natural surroundings, the Spa inspires in its guest relaxation, rejuvenation, and unmistakable inner balance. The Spa proudly uses and offers for purchase Eminence Organics, Naturopathica, and Aveda products. These brands utilize only the finest organic ingredients and are sourced from sustainable or renewable origins. View more at EdgewoodTahoe.com/Spa or visit the Spa on the second floor of the Lodge.
Edgewood Restaurant is South Lake Tahoe's greatest hidden gem. With stunning floor-to-ceiling windows and an elegant lodge aesthetic, diners enjoy striking views of mountains, pines, and the glistening sapphire lake while celebrating golden anniversaries and creating diamond memories. Fresh cuisine is prepared daily and matched with a carefully selected and diverse wine list, creating a dining experience that's nothing short of noteworthy. Be sure to reserve a table just before dark to secure a front row seat to the best show Tahoe has to offer—the vibrant Sierra sunset. View more at EdgewoodTahoe.com/Restaurant or visit the Restaurant inside the Clubhouse.
Conveniently located inside the Lodge is the Bistro, a full-service space open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Bistro serves as Edgewood's refined, yet casual, dining option for families, friends, and foodies alike. Boasting warm woods and streamlined design details, Bistro offers guests an aesthetic both mountain-chic and urban-contemporary, creating a striking setting for diners to enjoy the freshest seasonal fare in both indoor and outdoor tables. If you’re looking for a place to relax after a long day of fun, enjoy a signature cocktail or glass of wine from the Bistro Bar near an inviting fireplace in the lounge or on the patio. View more at EdgewoodTahoe.com/Bistro or visit the Bistro on the first floor of the Lodge.
Honored by Golf Digest as one of the "Best Golf Pubs" in the world, Brooks' Bar and Deck is home to a setting both striking and serene.
