Few things in history capture human interest more than dinosaurs. For many, they conjure images of gigantic, fearsome and mysterious beasts who once inhabited the Earth. But now they’re gone. However, one enormous Tyrannosaurus rex continues to roam the Earth, and her name is Sue. Sue is the star of A T. rex Named Sue, an exhibition created by the Field Museum in Chicago. The exhibition features a multitude of digital and hands-on exhibits that allow museum visitors to explore Sue’s past and the field of paleontology. The centerpiece of the exhibition is Sue, a 42-foot-long, 12-foot-tall, 3,500-pound cast of the original

skeleton unearthed in South Dakota in 1990. Sue is the largest and best preserved T. rex ever discovered. Only four T. rex specimens containing more than 60 percent of their original skeleton have ever been found. Sue is 90 percent complete — only a foot, one arm, and a few ribs and vertebrae are missing. The specimen was found by fossil hunter Sue Hendrickson in the Hell Creek Formation near Faith, South Dakota. In 1997, the Field Museum purchased the 65-million-year-old fossil at auction for $8.4 million, setting the record for the world’s highest price ever paid for a fossil.
A T. rex Named Sue will be on exhibit at The Discovery from May 27, 2017 through January 15, 2018. The exhibition was created by the Field Museum, Chicago, and made possible through the generosity of McDonald’s Corporation. Major support for the exhibition at The Discovery is provided by The Charles N. Mathewson CLAT Number One, The Charles N. Mathewson CLAT Number Two, The Bretzlaff Foundation, the Clarence & Martha Jones Family Foundation, Charles and Margaret Burback, David and Judy Hess, and Matt and Lydia Meyer.

Famous Flick Finds LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! By Heidi Bethel
Did you know that you are staying in what some Hollywood royalty deems a scene fit for the big screens? It’s true! Nicholas Cage even agreed when he said, ““There’s a magic in Nevada that applies to filmmaking in an excellent way.” Want to walk the scenes in some of your favorite movies? Here’s a quick tour through the famous spots in Reno, Lake Tahoe and beyond.
STARSTRUCK IN RENO In The Misfits, Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe bantered around downtown Reno and Pyramid Lake. Monroe even threw her ring off the famous Virginia Street Bridge to prove she was over her quickie divorce. The bridge was fully renovated last year and is surrounded by great shops, eateries and more in Reno’s Riverwalk District. renoriver.org Head to Nugget Casino Resort to relive Clint Eastwood’s journey through northern Nevada in Pink Cadillac. This movie was also filmed in Carson City, Fallon, Fernley and Reno. They even held the world premiere at Harrah’s Reno Hotel & Casino. nuggetcasinoreno.com; caesars.com Just down the road, at the National Bowling Stadium you can bowl a strike on the very lanes Woody Harrelson and Randy Quaid used for their final round in Kingpin. gobowlreno.com

FEATURING TAHOE Take a helicopter ride with Heli-vertex to spy the famous private mansion from the wedding scene in Godfather ll. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino shot the Oscarwinning film at Fleur de Lac on the lake’s west shore. helivertex.com In The Bodyguard, Whitney Houston and her entourage retreat from Los Angeles to Fallen Leaf Lake. The beautiful waterway also is in City of Angels starring Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage. Montbleu Resort Casino & Spa was the Nomad Casino in Smokin’ Aces where Jeremy Piven, Ryan Reynolds and a slew of other cast mates rushed around the property for a majority of the movie. montbleuresort.com
RECORDED IN THE RURALS While Goose suffered a dreadful fate, you may just spot a Top Gun fighter aircraft soaring high above the Naval Air Station Fallon. You could even stop in the Top Gun Restaurant to enjoy their subs, grinders and a whole lot of other menu favorites. @TopGunRestaurant And we can’t forget to mention the Genoa Bar and Saloon (a.k.a. Nevada’s oldest thirst parlor), which has become the backdrop for many classics. Clint Eastwood knocked back a few cold ones while filming Honky Tonk Man. It was the starring saloon in The Shootist with John Wayne, Charley Varrick and Walter Mathau; Misery with James Caan and Kathy Bates; and Till the River Runs Dry with Ann-Margret. genoabarandsalloon.com With the number of great movies that have been filmed in the area, it surely has been a popular destination in some of the great classics. While you’re here, see if you can find some of these famous flick spots. You’ll get to relive your visit again and again with a Sierra-themed movie binge once you’re back home. ADVENTURE
Soaring Over Lake Tahoe
By Diane Hansen Photos SoaringNV
I’m not going to call myself a daredevil, although sometimes I wish I were one. My vacation stories are usually pretty light on the action, heavy on the hammocks. Would I like to do a deep dive at high altitude in Lake Tahoe? Absolutely! Have I gone beyond taking a beginning diving class in a swimming pool? No. So, needless to say, I was a little nervous when I found myself considering going aloft in an aircraft with no engine. At first thought, flying in a glider seemed like an activity only for the adventurous in spirit or brave of heart. Yet after just a few minutes with the good people at SoaringNV in Minden, Nev., I knew I was in good hands. The professionals at SoaringNV really took their time getting me comfortable with my safety equipment, the glider itself and what I would be experiencing before I took off. Even though I would be sitting in front, Tim, an FAA-certified glider pilot instructor with thousands of glider flights in his stack of log books, would literally have my back, piloting the plane from the back seat. Suited with the first parachute I have worn in my life, I was excited and ready to go. Tim explained the controls to me like I was a pilot in training. The excitement mounted as the tow plane pilot attached the tow line to the glider, started his own engine and began to take off.
1142
The glider followed the tow plane with ease. At the right moment, Tim let me pull the yellow knob to release the tow line. He told me I could have any kind of flight I wanted. We could take it nice and easy around Lake Tahoe and, if conditions were right, he would let me maneuver the glider. Or if I wanted a
little adrenaline, we could do some tricks. I felt completely in control. For a while, I just sat and marveled at the crystalline blue of Lake Tahoe and enjoyed it from an angle few people get to experience. My whole flight could have stayed this relaxing. But then something great happened. I got this amazing burst of confidence and courage. I flew the glider on my own! Then, I told Tim I was ready to do some tricks. How many people can say they flew upside down over Lake Tahoe? Well, at least one. In one flight, I went from the girl who doesn’t venture to the woman who does and loves it. In fact, I’ve taken lessons since this flight. Am I on the fast track to a glider pilot’s license? Not quite … but, I’m building up the confidence! If you’re seeking relaxation or even a little adventure, you should take a glider ride at SoaringNV. They offer lessons, too! In fact, if you want a taste of what it’s like to soar on your own, you should try an introductory lesson. When you schedule in advance, Tim or one of the other staff instructors can teach you soaring basics in ground school. Then, with your instructor literally right behind you, get towed to 3,000 feet and try your hand at the stick. You get a log book with your first flight as an entry and even a discount off your second lesson. Anyone can put you in a glider, but SoaringNV gives you an experience you will never forget. Give them a call at 775-782-9595, or check out their website. Tell them Getaway Reno/Tahoe sent you! soaringnv.com SoaringNV 775-782-9595 1138 Airport Rd., Minden, Nevada 89423 soaringnv.com

Vertical Goals
The area’s best climbing adventures, both inside and out By Meghan Burk
Whether you climbed trees as a child, hike mountains, or yearn to see that next spectacular view, you understand there’s nothing like the feeling of reaching new heights and uttering those words, “I made it.” New to the climbing world, I discovered you don’t need to be a daredevil to find that fun and healthy dose of adrenaline. Here are some of my favorite places in Reno/Tahoe to climb high, no matter your age or ability.
CLIMB THE WORLD’S TALLEST Next to the Reno Arch, you can’t help but notice an enormous climbing wall attached to the side of the 16-story Whitney Peak Hotel. BaseCamp Climbing Gym stands 163 feet and 6.5 inches and is the tallest artificial climbing wall in the world. It officially holds the Guinness World Record! When you make it to the top, you’ll enjoy ringing the bell as on-lookers cheer from below. I was the first to ring the bell after the official record holding announcement. For any bucket list enthusiast, I dare you to check this off your list. If you’re looking for a more subtle approach, inside BaseCamp you can rent some gear and free climb on their boulders, perfect for your first introduction or a great challenge to those wanting to train on their steep, overhang caves. basecampreno.com
PLAY IN THE PINES Did you know there are 11 coniferous tree species in the Tahoe Basin? There’s no better way to learn about them than by exploring this living classroom. On the north shore of Lake Tahoe, choose from three spectacular tree parks with North Tahoe Adventures. Imagine flying, climbing and slack lining all in one. We Getaway girls hung out (literally) at their newest location in Tahoe Vista. We toured treetops, towering bridges, aerial walkways and zip lines, suspended anywhere from 10-to-50 feet. I love trees and was happy to know that these stewards are setting the trends in tree platform attachment methods. They are committed to keeping both the trees and forest healthy, allowing us to experience the wonders of these giants for years to come. northtahoeadventures.com 18 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
AN EPIC DISCOVERY Heavenly Mountain Resort is one of Lake Tahoe’s premiere ski resorts and attractions, even during the spring and summer months. The ascent starts with a scenic gondola ride up the mountain. Get your camera ready because there’s some serious panoramic views of Lake Tahoe. At the top, it’s a climber’s paradise. Choose from three ropes courses at varying levels, a 25-foot climbing wall, summer tubing, and even a mountain roller coaster (say what?!). And it gets better. With the Skyway Canopy Tour, here’s your chance to fly through and above the forest with an array of zip lines and aerial bridges. Talk about jaw-dropping views of the lake. Finish your descent with a zip line race against your friends on the Hot Shot Zip Line or complete your adrenaline fix on the Blue Streak Zip Line, a 3,300-foot line with recorded top speeds up to 50 mph. skiheavenly.com
ROCK JOCKS Last summer was my first time rock climbing granite faces in Tahoe’s wilderness. Even at a novice level, the mental and physical challenge was a little nerve racking at first, but then exciting, and now addicting. I encourage you to master this skill with Tahoe Jack’s Adventure Authority. They’ll take your climb to the next level, providing all gear rentals and hands-on instructions in a safe and beautiful environment. Learn the essentials like knots, anchoring, belaying, climbing techniques and rappelling. You’ll be a rock jock in no time. tahoejacks.com Photos opposite page: Tahoe Jack’s Adventure Authority; Photos this page: BaseCamp Climbing Gym, Tahoe Jack’s Adventure Authority; Photos next page: Heavenly Epic Discovery, Tahoe Jack’s Adventure Authority

Bucket List Bites These foodie finds are all the latest buzz on the streets: In Reno, the east coast style at Morgan’s Lobster Shack & Fish Market is a wicked hit. With two locations, step up to the famed Oyster Bar for fresh fish flown in almost daily and take down some lobster rolls, fried clams, and haddock. Remember to save room for the new colossal custom homemade ice cream sandwiches found at The Baked Bear with locations in Sparks, Reno and South Lake Tahoe. The hot-pressed donut will leave you saying O-M-G. It’s a cut fresh doughnut topped with signature bear batter ice cream, blanketed in rainbow sprinkles, then warmed, and finished with an icing drizzle! morganslobstershack.com; thebakedbear.com
Add these tasty finds to your dining adventures in Reno/Tahoe. Southern barbecue has never been so close to the West Coast. Ten Crows, located inside Hotel Becket in South Lake, is sizzling things up with their Alabama-style fire-pit smoker. No need for a wet wipe, you’ll lick every finger to savor their signature white barbeque sauce. For something fun, order the Heavenly happy meal, an adult twist with your choice of gourmet sandwich, Pabst Blue Ribbon, a shot of Jameson, and a toy! You’ve got to try their bloody mary too, complete with all the fixings and a chicken wing garnish! At Alpine Union inside Hardrock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe mountain lifestyle is the theme for this rebranded joint. I love the variety from Thai chicken lettuce wraps to their signature appetizer, shred the cheese, a chef ’s daily selection cheese fondue. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunch on weekends, there’s something for everyone to scarf down. For a lighter twist on comfort food, Roundabout Grill inside Whitney Peak Hotel offers a healthier alternative with a gourmet twist. Reno I 1868 FC Makes its Debut
t’s a known fact that the United Soccer League regularly approaches communities to launch Division II teams, but they probably wouldn’t have knocked on Reno’s door if we hadn’t beaten theirs down first. A year ago they announced the debut of Reno 1868 FC and given the tradition of professional soccer, we expect to capture a moment that will nickname the team.
The unprecedented deal that structured Reno’s professional soccer team By Kylie Rowe
26 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
In an interview with the president of the Reno Aces and now president of Reno 1868 FC, Eric Edelstein told me the whole story. The Reno Aces owner called two years ago and asked if he was familiar with any business models that housed both a soccer and baseball team in the same stadium. After determining the field measurements were large enough, spending nine months in meetings with the USL, and completing a 45-page business plan, the football club moved from the idea stage to proof of concept. They were on track to manage the franchise when Eric was introduced to the president of the San Jose Earthquakes Major League Soccer team, Dave Kaval. Eric told me the day they met it was
like going on a great first date. Their management philosophies aligned and they quickly began brokering the unprecedented deal that structured Reno’s professional soccer team. With only one similar affiliation in the country, executive committees of both leagues heavily advised a two-year partnership that could serve as a model for other communities. A combination of business, art and luck describes how two sports teams can share a stadium with seasons that completely overlap. The soccer team launched the first of 16 games in March and baseball the first of 71 games in April. Eric submitted 35 dates to play home games with enough time to transition the field, switching between sports. “If we get the schedule we’re hoping for, Greater Nevada Field, with it’s brand new $1.1 million scoreboard, will put turf down and line a soccer field nine times in between baseball games,” he says. The soccer team roster will be finalized in May and head coach Ian Russell will hold spots for four-to-six guys from the Quakes who will suit up each week. USL contracts are typically drafted for
one year. They’ve already signed Dane Kelly, this Jamaican-born 26-year-old is the USL’s all-time leading scorer and will likely be the face of the franchise. Next on the roster, Matt Lagrassa from the Bay Area who vacationed as a child in Tahoe. I can’t forget to mention the starting center midfielder Jimmy Ockford, who was a Seattle Sounders draft pick. With these top players and a staff prepared to launch a football club, it couldn’t be a more exciting time for spring sports in Reno. The team kicked off its first game in March, culminating the season at home in October. We don’t know when it will happen but fans are watching for the unexpected moment that will nickname Reno’s professional soccer team — you should go to a game, you just might be there to see it! reno1868fc.com
TRAVEL TIP HEY SUPER FANS! JOIN THE BATTLE BORN BRIGADE CHEERING SECTION. On game day, supporters pre-game at Old Bridge Pub then march through downtown cheering for Reno 1868 FC. Learn the chants at bbbrigade.com! #allforourcity #BattleBornBrigade

Life is Brewtiful Touring delicious local beers, from light to dark. By Rebecca David
I
have always been a beer-drinking kind of girl, which shocks many people. It wasn’t until recently that I became more adventurous in truly testing my palate. I enjoy light beers and always carried a fear of the darker variety. Boy, was I mistaken! During a self-prompted local brewery tour, I decided to step out of my alefilled comfort zone and ask for their most popular brews, as well as one they would personally recommend. Every brewery had so many amazing varieties of beer each with their own distinguished flavor and story. Now, I’m loving the full golden, amber, dark and stormy spectrum making up the local brew scene.

The Depot Craft Brewery Distillery
thedepotreno.com Serves: Lunch and dinner, spirits, beer and wine. Beer Recommendation: The Voyager West Cost IPA has a wow factor for me! So much flavor packed into such a smooth and easy-to-drink beer. About Them: Build in 1910, the building was originally a train depot. Now, it’s the state’s first brewery and distillery. Not only do they offer great brews, they have their own distillery as well! Try a cocktail or two with spirits made with local Nevada grains. Location: Reno 775-737-4330
High Sierra Brewing Company
highsierrabrewco.com Serves: Food, spirits, beer and wine. Beer Recommendation: Buzz Bee Honey is a very refreshing light beer frequently featured at local beer festivals and events. About Them: Located inside Baldini’s Casino, this place is like a hidden gem brewing all of their beer in house. This large space has gaming, pool, darts and don’t forget about the great beer! Location: Sparks 775-398-4200
Sidellis Lake Tahoe Brewery & Restaurant
sidellis.com Serves: Lunch and dinner, plus beer. Beer Recommendation: Blended beer! They’ve combined their Cluanie Farm House Ale and Partner’s in Vine Sour for a taste that’s one of a kind! It’s more of a mixed fermentation rather than a blended beer, technically, because it is mixed prior to carbonation and kegging. I loved both beers on their own but they complement each other so well that there was no going back. If you ask for the Blended Beer they will know exactly what you’re talking about! About Them: A small-batch brewery, Sidellis creates exceptional beers with flavors that will blow your mind. Be sure to ask about their name and the story behind the brewery. Location: South Lake Tahoe 530-600-3999
Cold Water Brewery
tahoecoldwaterbrewery.com Serves: Lunch and dinner, spirits, beer and wine. Beer Recommendation: Mr. Toad’s Wild Rye has a truly shocking color. The Cold Water Brewery is very open and light so this beer looks different under the various hues inside. Smooth, yet full of flavor without feeling like a meal, this is certainly a new favorite of mine. About Them: All their beers are named after places in Tahoe that they like to visit. The staff is exceptionally knowledgeable about their beers and flavors, take their recommendation because you won’t be disappointed. They really know what they are talking about! Location: South Lake Tahoe 530-544-4677

The Brewer’s Cabinet
thebrewerscabinet.com Serves: Breakfast, lunch and dinner, spirits, beer and wine. Beer Recommendation: Boo Boo’s Revenge for an American brown ale is smooth, light and very surprising in flavor. I didn’t expect to like it but the mild chocolate flavor was definitely good. And if you like this one you should also try the Dirty Wookie. About Them: A true brewer’s cabinet, they serve a variety of fresh and unique beers. This small-batch brewery has a lot of flexibility in their brewing process resulting in really developed, full flavors. Location: Reno 775-348-7481

Brasserie Saint James
brasseriestjames.com Serves: Breakfast, lunch and dinner, spirits, beer and wine. Beer Recommendation: Red Headed Stranger for something flavorful but not heavy like I thought it would be. It’s smooth and refreshing! This red farmhouse ale is perfect to complement a variety of their food dishes. About them: Housed in the historic Crystal Springs building, they own the rights to the water source below ground and that’s what is used when making their beer. They have a lot of Gold Metal Beers for every palate. Location: Reno 775-348-8888
Great Basin Brewing Company
greatbasinbrewingco.com Serves: Lunch and dinner, spirits, beer and wine. Beer Recommendation: Outlaw Milk Stout is full and hardy and was like a meal for me. But, I really liked it! In fact, I bought a six-pack to bring home with me. You should also try their Cerveza Chilebeso beer, it is extremely unique and is a “love it or hate it” kind of beer. About Them: Checkout their food menu,
WHERE TO BUY everything with a beer next to it means they use their beer when making it. And you should also try a Bloody Mary complete with a floater of their Outlaw Milk Stout on top. Locations: Reno - 775-284-7711; Sparks 775-355-7711 I learned so much about craft beers and my personal preferences. My beer knowledge has definitely grown and I have just one piece of advice … Don’t judge a beer by the color, judge it by taste because it could surprise you! Just like these beers pleasantly surprised me. Happy tasting!

Healthy Havens Foodie finds for every palate By Britton Griffith-Douglass
Reno/Tahoe has many places for a quick lunch, a protein-packed bite with your best friend, and vegan meals that will help make this trip healthy, fit and tasty as ever.
Tasty Reno I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years and finding a menu that delights and excites my taste buds while staying true to an animal-friendly lifestyle is something I am thankful for. Great Full Gardens has made so many people in Reno appreciative of delicious vegan, paleo and gluten-free options. They even expanded beyond Midtown and opened a second location in south Reno. Enjoy locally famous favorites like the faux bacon BLTA and homemade vegan tomato soup. They even write inspirational notes on to-go boxes bringing smiles after you’ve taken your last delectable morsel. greatfullgardens.com
with “zoodles” (zucchini noodles) or one of the pre-made boxes if you’re on the go. bffcafe.com
The only thing that tastes better than a quick healthy meal, is eating it with someone you love the most. BFF Cafe in Reno serves yummy plates that go great when you want to catch up with a friend over lunch. With protein options, soups, chili and more, you’ll think you’re on a cheat day. Try their vegan mushroom bowl

The Riverwalk District has gathered plenty of praise in the recent years for their array of amazing restaurants and eateries. In particular the beloved local celebrity chef, Mark Estee, and his Liberty Food and Wine Exchange is one of the main reasons downtown Reno is delicious. A menu filled with local meats, produce and farm-totable items presents the perfect place to eat dinner and enjoy a great glass of wine with friends. libertyfoodandwine.com Finding a gluten-free pizza that tastes as good as it looks is a miracle, which is why the Blue Angel Cafe is heaven on earth. This delightful eatery offers guests a welcoming atmosphere and items that will make your taste buds dance. Angelic pizza toppings include veggies with Gorgonzola and
rocket prosciutto. To top it off, while chewing away at a crust that tastes like nirvana, you’ll feel right at home in this cozy restaurant with friendly staff. blueangelcafe.com Tahoe brings so many people to visit with its beautiful views, crisp clear lake and delectable dishes from a place guests and locals adore, Artemis Café. With two locations in South Lake, your stomach will have something to smile about. Start your morning off right with a crab benedict or a vegan tofu scramble. artemislakefrontcafe.com No matter how healthy you are or what goals you have set on your monthly meal plan, sometimes a sweet tooth just cannot be soothed. Thankfully, you can enjoy guilt-free ice cream from Rolled Mountain Creamery located in Dorinda’s chocolate in the Riverwalk District and the South Creek Shopping Center. This smooth
and creamy concoction is not only fun to watch be created by a local chef using a Thai technique on a frozen platter, it is also scrumptious! I sampled the house favorite, cow’s milk Mexican hot chocolate and also the vegan coconut Oreo flavor in honor of National Oreo Day. These dishes are the perfect cure to a desire of dairy sweetness while not breaking my dietary bank. rolledmountaincreamery.com I know sometimes it can be hard to eat healthy and meet dietary constraints while enjoying all the area has to offer. If you make reservations at any of these wonderful restaurants in Reno/Tahoe, staying fit, full and nutrition conscious on your vacay will be a breeze, bon appetite!

Confectionary for dessert Satisfy that savory-sweet tooth with a little goody from Mix Bakery in Reno. Their custard chess pie is the perfect end to any meal. And you’ll be supporting a great local cause while you’re at it. Looking for a treat in Tahoe? Evan’s American Café Gourmet has the best chocolate raspberry crème brûlée. At Northstar, stop by Euro Snack for a piping hot Belgian waffle or crepe. mixcupcakeco.com; evanstahoe.com; northstarcalifornia.com
Frothy for cocktails Scrambled for breakfast Looking to start your morning off with a protein-packed meal? Head to Verde Mexican Rotisserie in South Lake Tahoe for a tasty breakfast burrito filled with your choice of meat, cheese, eggs, roasted chipotle sweet potatoes and sour cream. At Crème Café in Midtown, they have the best scrambles around. LA Bakery is the place to go in Carson City for wraps and bagel sandwiches — the LA special wrap includes scrambled eggs, bacon, cheddar cheese, organic spinach, roasted bell pepper and onion with sundried tomato pesto sauce. The perfect way to fuel your body for the rest of this egg-filled day. restaurantmeyersca.com; cremecafereno.com; labakerycafe.com
This eggalicious menu wouldn’t be complete without a nightcap! Head to Noble Pie Parlor in Midtown for an awesome Fallon fizz, created by Pignic Pub & Patio (another great spot in Reno’s Riverwalk District). This drink combines local Frey Ranch gin, Meletti Limoncello, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, egg whites and fresh basil. It’s a really pretty cocktail. In Truckee, Moody’s Bistro, Bar & Beats offers a few creative white foam-covered concoctions such as their pisco sour. @pignicpub; moodysbistro.com Whether you pick a breakfast burrito, monte cristo or crème brûlée, make your trip to the Sierra the yolkiest it can be! And, don’t forget to thank any chicken farmer you might see. Happy eating!
Fried for lunch and dinner Make any entree better with a nice, golden-eyed fried egg placed atop. Ace High Saloon & Smokehouse in South Lake Tahoe knows what they’re doing with the delicious, gooey yolks crammed inside the toasty buns on their burgers. For a little egg on the outside, McP’s Irish Pub serves a monte cristo with sourdough stuffed with turkey, ham and cheese, then egg-battered and grilled to perfection. Yum! acehighsaloon-smokehouse.com; mcpspub.com In south Reno, Twisted Fork is a steaklover’s dream with their cowboy ribeye — a nice cut of meat served with fried egg, asparagus, mushroom and white cheddar mac and cheese, and romesco sauce. twistedforkreno.com

fter the legalization of marijuana in both California and Nevada during the 2016 election, locals and visitors can now legally explore the world of cannabis! This highly versatile plant has active substances that provide countless therapeutic benefits. Marijuana and hemp are essentially the same plant under the genus and species Cannabis Sativa. Hemp is grown for its fibers and used in clothing, rope, paper, etc. Marijuana has more psychoactive and healing components that have successfully provided relief and ailments for conditions like general pain, chemo-induced neurotherapy, post traumatic stress disorder, side eects from cancer treatment, depression, muscle spasms and seizures, just to name a few.

The new laws now allow for recreational use of marijuana for adults 21+ years, cultivation of a maximum of six plants for personal use, and possession of up to one ounce. The purchase of marijuana will still be restricted to medicinal patients until the permit process is defined this year. Visit norml.org for more information. As these new regulations emerge, we can definitely expect to see many canna-businesses popping up in Reno/Tahoe — adding to the existing retail locations for clothing, smoking devices, health and beauty supplies, new medicines, and other hemp products.

Raising The Bar By Annie Flanzraich
Pack locally crafted nutrition bars for flavor and history on your next adventure
Tahoe Trail Bar If I were a more Pinteresty person, I might have baked a nutritious snack very much like a Tahoe Trail Bar. I feel bewildered looking at the energy bar shelves at the supermarket. Each wrapper promises a healthier, better, stronger, faster, more complete me. But, usually, the bars fall short of the promises — and flavor. Really, how can any food described as “chocolate brownie” taste like brown chalk? It’s a crime. Then there are the nutrition labels. I’m looking for ingredients I can read and understand — perhaps even pick up at the grocery store? “Cane Invert Syrup” does not fit that description. However, some times and trails demand a perfectly wrapped bar of nutrition — ready to be slipped into a backpack, Camelbak sleeve or cargo short pocket. With spring here, I took a deeper look at those disconcerting shelves to find satisfaction. Enter two locally created bars that pack flavor and energy.
Except, I’m not. I want my convenience wrapped and delivered, please and thank you. Tahoe Trail Bar reminds me of the Chewy granola bars my mom used to pack with my lunch. That nostalgic taste comes from real ingredients such as coconut, chocolate chunks, raisins, sunflower seeds, peanuts, dried cranberries, sesame seeds and flaxseeds (among others). In 2002, when the Tahoe Trail Bar first started, it was sold out of South Lake Tahoe coffee shop. They were baked in loaf plans, cut, and served wrapped in wax paper. “People really loved them,” King says. “I mean it was their favorite thing in the coffee shop.”
50 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
Almost 15 years later King says his goal is still the same. “At first it was just about getting more bars in more people’s mouths,” King says. “I’d like to tell you things have changed, but they really haven’t. That’s really still our main goal—to connect people to the outdoors through providing them great fuel.” For most of the company’s history, one flavor dominated Tahoe Trail Bar’s selection. But this year that will change with the introduction of two new flavors: dark chocolate cherry and mango coconut. The new flavors come with a new package. No matter the flavor or design, King says he feels a responsibility to the Tahoe culture. “We just feel like we’re a custodian for giving other people a better understanding of what the Tahoe lifestyle is about,” King says.
Nature’s Bakery If Tahoe Trail Bar reminds me of an elementary-school granola bar, then Nature’s Bakery evokes similar lunchtime memories — this time of Fig Newtons. Except Nature’s Bakery treats come in a variety of flavors (hello double chocolate brownies!) and in a gluten-free version. Like Tahoe Trail Bars, Nature’s Bakery’s roots run deep in the Reno/ Tahoe region. In 2010, Dave Marson and his son Sam started making the bars in a bakery in Carson City. Dave learned from his father Richard, who created a bakery in the Bay Area.“It’s more than just a brand, it also represents a special father and son journey working together, jointly making a dream come true,”
says Andrew C. Strolin, vice president of marketing. Location also plays an important role in the Nature’s Bakery philosophy, Strolin says.
Where to find the bars TAHOE TRAIL BAR
tahoetrailbar.com
> Nugget Markets > Raley’s > Safeway > Whole Foods > Sports Basement
“Lake Tahoe is basically our backyard, it’s an outdoor mecca and playground for the winter and the summer,” Strolin says. “We wanted to make sure we planted our roots here to be part of the community.” For that reason, you’ll find Nature’s Bakery products at a variety of races and adventures in the region. And this year, you’ll find them in new organic flavors, such as salted caramel, double chocolate and cool mint. “They’re delicious,” Strolin says. “They’re soft and a little gooey on the inside.”

Now, I know two locally crafted options to fuel my next adventure. All I need to do is choose between salted caramel brownie and dark chocolate cherry. Maybe I’ll pack both.

Springtime Showers Enjoy water, from natural to spa treatments galore By Alicia Sontag
This spring, there’s no better way to celebrate water than by treating yourself to the refreshing and rejuvenating qualities of good ol’ H2O. We all know the ditty, April showers bring May flowers, so now its time take a moment to stop and appreciate the essence of life by indulging in nature’s most beautiful feature. Whether hiking to a waterfall or a taking a trip to your local spa, it’s time to tune back into nature and enjoy the hypnotizing health benefits of water. Refocus on yourself and take a wellness hike to your nearest waterfall. The Tahoe region is full of some of nature’s most pristine glacier falls. Shirley Canyon Trail, located in Squaw Valley, includes a three-anda-half-mile hike. Although a moderately difficult jaunt, the picturesque waterfalls scattered along the path, as well as the spring wildflowers and wildlife, will re-ground you and allow you to reconnect with your deepest self. squawalpine.com Other waterfalls to venture to are Horsetail Falls, two miles past the town of Strawberry, and Eagle Falls, in Emerald Bay. Horsetail Falls is accessible by either the gentler Pyramid Creek Hiking Trail (Great for family outings!) or Wilderness Boundary Trail (A more challenging hike for adventurers.). A steep and challenging climb over rocks to the top, Horsetail Falls drops 500 feet. Eagle Falls stems from Eagle Lake, a mile north of the falls, and runs into the chilly Emerald Bay. The cascades are visible from the Rubicon and Vikingsholm Trails, and provide beautiful views of the snowcapped mountains framing the perfectly blue lake. The falls remind you to just go with the flow, be fluid, and regain the sense of balance and oneness.
LIQUID SANCTUARY If journeying into the wilderness proves too daunting, then there is always the safe comfort of hot springs and spa, available at 1862 David Walley’s Hot Springs & Resort. Located in Genoa, only 25 miles from South Lake Tahoe, the resort offers five natural hot springs and pools filled with

mineral rich waters. This enriched water has been known to provide health benefits, relaxing ambiance and time to reflect. The onsite spa’s vichy shower features a cascade of mineral water that massages the skin encouraging a strong immune system. davidwalleys-resort.com On the shores of South Lake Tahoe, at BioSpirit Day Spa, professionals offer hydrafacials. Water becomes the main ingredient to creating younger and healthier skin. These amazing facials make skin radiant and appear younger by smoothing and filling face lines. Both relaxing and rejuvenating, this will leave you energized and worshipping water. massagetahoe.com Both humans and this magnificent blue planet are over 70 percent water. Whether it’s exercise next to water or through spa treatments, water is the right way to find that youthful glow and a healthier lifestyle. With these waterfalls and therapies, we are reminded how we can always stay the same, yet continue to move and flow, and find that mental wellness that we seek daily. This best-kept secret is tucked away in beautiful Hope Valley, Calif., just 20 minutes from Lake Tahoe. It’s the perfect blend of cozy and comfortable relaxation for outdoor lovers hoping to spend time away from emails and cell phones. And by the way, you won’t find any TVs, internet or cell service here, giving you the opportunity to read that book you packed. (You know what I’m talking about!)
Unplug from everyday life at Sorensen’s Resort
Whether it’s exploring wildflower-filled trails in Hope Valley or taking a fly-fishing lesson in the West Fork of the Carson River, Sorensen’s Resort is my chance to take in all the natural distractions. This is where locals go to unplug and unwind from the hustle and bustle of life.
Offering an ideal mountain experience, enjoy endless recreation every season. In the spring, explore a wildflower wilderness hike or nature walk on their array of trails then relax, sipping wine as you cozy up next to the campfire. Nearby corrals offer Pony Expressinspired horseback rides. Kick up some dirt mountain biking the Sierra or take an exhilarating adventure white-water rafting the East Fork of the Carson River. Hosted workshops and other festivities are a special treat, from stargazing, to music, water coloring, photography and more, so be sure to check their schedule of events online. Need to fuel those adventures? You’ll love the Sorensen’s Country Café. Serving three delicious meals a day, my favorite item on the menu is their signature beef burgundy stew complemented with a glass of red from their stock of fine wines. On your way out, pick up some memorabilia at their quaint gift shop to remember your already memorable time here. When you’re ready to plan your visit, check real-time weather conditions on their website. They are now an official National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather station, giving you the most accurate weather conditions and road access. Sorensen’s is also excited to announce their electric car plug-in stations, partnering with Tesla to support gas-free cars on the road and becoming a Supercharger location to help keep Tahoe blue and the Sierra green.
