ncredible vistas, epic azure waters, unlimited trails to hike and bike, thriving casinos and nightlife — these images likely describe what comes to mind when you think about Reno/Tahoe. Well, fare travelers, you must add world-class art to that list. The Nevada Museum of Art, Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Visual Arts, E. L. Wiegand Gallery garners an international reputation for its original scholarship and Insta-worthy exhibitions. Take a day and jet to downtown Reno to enjoy Nevada’s only accredited art museum. Bonus tip: The onsite restaurant, chez louie, offers a delicious seasonal menu. Here’s a taste of what you’ll encounter at the Museum this summer: Maynard Dixon: The Paltenghi Collections. On view through July 16. Drawn from the collections of brothers Bruce C. Paltenghi and Dr. Richard Paltenghi, this exhibition features drawings and paintings by American artist Maynard Dixon. Inspired to begin collecting by their father, the Paltenghi brothers have amassed over 70 artworks offering an intimate look at Dixon’s life in the American West. Included are many neverbefore-seen drawings with subjects ranging from mountain and desert landscapes, to portraits and nude figure studies.
Miradas: Ancient Roots in Modern and Contemporary Mexican Art, works from the Bank of America Collection. On view through July 16. The exhibition examines and celebrates work by artists on both sides of the border — American and Mexican-American — revealing a variety of cultural aspects as they emerged in the years after the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920) to the present day. This unique survey of over 100 works takes a close look at paintings, prints and photographs created over the past 80 years by well-known Mexican artists like Diego Rivera and Rufino Tamayo, as well as Mexican-American artists such as Judithe Hernández and Roberto Juarez. City of Dust: The Evolution of Burning Man. On view July 1, 2017 – January 7, 2018. Burning Man’s founders open their vaults to share never-before-seen photographs, artifacts, journals, sketches and notebooks revealing how this temporary experimental desert city came to be — and how it continues to evolve. are drawn from the archive collections of the Museum’s Center for Art + Environment. Unsettled. On view August 26, 2017 – January 21, 2018. Unsettled focuses on work by artists living and/or working in the Greater West, a super-region bounded from Alaska to Patagonia, and from Australia to the American West. Though ranging across thousands of miles, these comparative Wests share similar histories born of collision between indigenous and frontier cultures. They also share common concerns of land and water use, harvest and extraction, and the preservation of natural beauty and wideopen space. Organized by Nevada Museum of Art Curatorial Director and Curator of Contemporary Art JoAnne Northrup with Collaborating Curator, iconic Los Angeles artist Ed Ruscha, Unsettled features more than 200 artworks by over 80 artists. This incredible exhibition will travel to both the Anchorage Museum and Palm Springs Art Museum, a testament to the show’s importance. Nevada Museum of Art 775-329-3333 160 W. Soaring Over Lake Tahoe By Diane Hansen Photos SoaringNV
I’m not going to call myself a daredevil, although sometimes I wish I were one. My vacation stories are usually pretty light on the action, heavy on the hammocks. Would I like to do a deep dive at high altitude in Lake Tahoe? Absolutely! Have I gone beyond taking a beginning diving class in a swimming pool? No. So, needless to say, I was a little nervous when I found myself considering going aloft in an aircraft with no engine. At first thought, flying in a glider seemed like an activity only for the adventurous in spirit or brave of heart. Yet after just a few minutes with the good people at SoaringNV in Minden, Nev., I knew I was in good hands. The professionals at SoaringNV really took their time getting me comfortable with my safety equipment, the glider itself and what I would experience before taking off. Even though I would be sitting in front, Tim, an FAA-certified glider pilot instructor with thousands of glider flights in his stack of log books, would literally have my back, piloting the plane from the back seat. Suited with the first parachute I have worn in my life, I was excited and ready to go.
Tim explained the controls to me like I was a pilot in training. The excitement mounted as the tow plane pilot attached the tow line to the glider, started his own engine and began to take off. The glider followed the tow plane with ease. At the right moment, Tim let me pull the yellow knob torelease the tow line. He told me I could have any kind of flight I wanted. We could take it nice and easy around Lake Tahoe and, if conditions were right, he would let me maneuver the glider. Or if I wanted a little adrenaline, we could do some tricks. I felt completely in control. For a while, I just sat and marveled at the crystalline blue of Lake Tahoe and enjoyed it from an angle few people get to experience. My whole flight could have stayed this relaxing. But then something great happened. I got this amazing burst of confidence and courage. I flew the glider on my own! Then, I told Tim I was ready to do some tricks. How many people can say they flew upside down over Lake Tahoe? Well, at least one. In one flight, I went from the girl who doesn’t venture to the woman who does and loves it. In fact, I’ve taken lessons since this flight. Am I on the fast track to a glider pilot’s license?
Not quite ... but, I’m building up the confidence! If you’re seeking relaxation or even a little adventure, you should take a glider ride at SoaringNV. They offer lessons, too! In fact, if you want a taste of what it’s like to soar on your own, you should try an introductory lesson. When you schedule in advance, Tim or one of the other staff instructors can teach you soaring basics in ground school. Then, with your instructor literally right behind you, get towed to 3,000 feet and try your hand at the stick. You get a log book with your first flight as an entry and even a discount off your second lesson. Anyone can put you in a glider, but SoaringNV gives you an experience you will never forget. Give them a call at 775-782-9595, or check out their website. Tell them Getaway Reno/Tahoe sent you! soaringnv.com SoaringNV 775-782-9595 1138 Airport Rd., Minden, Nevada 89423 soaringnv.com

Go Wild at Sierra Safari Zoo O
ver 26 years ago, Sierra Safari Zoo was started by friends Dale McDaniel, Jimmie Martin and Dave Dawson. All three enjoyed interacting and caring for animals. They recognized there were not a lot of places for people in the area to view, learn about and interact with amazing creatures from around the world. They decided to start the nonprofit now known as Sierra Safari Zoo. There are few places where you can take your family to learn about exotic live animals the way you can here. With the opportunity to view, photograph and learn about more than 200 animals from around the world, visitors are also able to reach out and interact with the creatures. Sure, you can walk by and view animals at almost any zoo in the U.S. — but the human care and love for the animals is
what sets Sierra Safari Zoo apart from the rest. Many of the animals and wildlife have been both rescued and rehabilitated, allowing visitors to have this incredibly unique experience. Since the zoo is home to many types and species of animals, you are always sure to get a glimpse of the new babies born throughout the year. Visitors return over and over again to see their friends grow and change. Make it a fun tradition to go to the zoo each year and watch your favorite little friends grow up right before your eyes. Nowhere is the inspiring appreciation and love for animals at Sierra Safari Zoo more evident than when you see the volunteers interact with the animals. More than 40 volunteers, amazing people who have a true
passion and love for the animal kingdom, graciously donate their time. If you have children, visiting Sierra Safari Zoo is a great way to teach them about environmental responsibility. The zoo now has solar electricity, which provides most of the power it uses. Make sure to ask one of the volunteers about this instrumental and irreplaceable addition. Sierra Safari Zoo is located at 10200 N. Virginia St. in Reno — only 8 miles North of Downtown off Exit 78 on Red Rock Road. Just follow the signs! For information call 775-677-1104. The animals look forward to seeing you soon! sierrasafarizoo.org

THE LOFT IS A RARE, ENCHANTING TREASURE IN THE HEAVENLY VILL AGE
o experience world-class, awardwinning magic, one would instantly think of the famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, Calif., or perhaps the mega-casinos in Las Vegas. Behold, South Lake Tahoe now joins the ranks with a rare breed of theatre presenting magic full-time at The Loft TheatreLounge-Dining. Conceived solely out of love of magic, The Loft is one of only 10 theatres in the U.S. dedicated to this entertainment art. One of the partners in this venture has produced magic-themed production shows in Lake Tahoe for the past 14 years, and won the coveted Merlin Award for “Producer of the Year.” (Industry tip: The Merlin Award is to magic as the Oscar is to the movies, what the Emmy is for television, and the Tony is to theater.) The highest award in this category has only been presented to one other producer in Merlin Award history — Paul Reder, co-owner of The Loft, and his producer-partner Tony Clark are now in the ranks with Howard Feld for Siegfried & Roy who also won this esteemed title. Reder and Clark have written, directed, and produced magic-themed stage shows in Lake Tahoe, Reno, Las Vegas, Laughlin and Los Angeles. Perhaps their favorite yet is Magic Fusion, now ranked as the “#1 Show” in the Lake Tahoe area. The Loft Theatre’s intimate environment creates an alluring wow factor featuring a special genre of parlour magic. There’s no smoke and mirrors.

You won’t see any big goofy boxes dragged across the stage. This is truly the finest form of magic presented in a way that will leave you breathless and bewildered. Add some sidesplitting comedy, and voila, you have Magic Fusion. The Loft doesn’t stop at just magic. They are successfully ranked as one of the best restaurants in the Sierra featuring gourmet Italian cuisine, as well as a high-end Ultra Lounge complete with indoor fire-pit tables, and live DJs after dark on the weekends. The Loft won the soughtafter “Best Of Tahoe” Award in 2016 and is nominated in 19 categories for 2017 including “Best Overall Restaurant,” “Best Date Night,” “Best Place To Take The Family,” and, one of our favorite categories, “Best Customer Service.” We love everything about The Loft and so do countless others. We highly recommend planning ahead for your visit as seats sell out quickly! Tickets for Magic Fusion and dinner reservations are sold separately online. Reservations are also available by phone during business hours. This experience is great for all ages! The beauty of Lake Tahoe Golf Course By Richard “Dickie” Peraldo
As an avid golfer, there are a few things on my must-have list when it comes to the ideal course: Friendly staff, views galore and a challenging but enjoyable game. The moment I walked into the clubhouse at Lake Tahoe Golf Course I knew my round would be amazing no matter my final score. Greeted by Kevin Sommerfeld, general manager at Lake Tahoe Golf Course, we first strolled the grounds as he told me about all the great things happening around the course. We talked about the spectacular 18 holes, great views and the events they host. From bachelor parties (which I saw first hand) to weddings and banquets, this course hosts amazing events complete with a snazzy dance floor! Nothing says fun like a great location with spectacular views.
34 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
Speaking of those sights, let’s talk about some of the best panoramas you’ll find on any golf course around. Walk out to the first tee for an inspired 360-degree scene — the only reason you’ll remember you’re playing golf and not sightseeing is the driver in your hand. Straight ahead off the tee, you’ll see Dick’s Peak and Mount Tallac. Okay, time to focus and hit that opening tee shot. The landscape only continues to impress. About the time you drive up to hole six your jaw will drop while looking at the stunning Truckee River. Nothing will beat trying to knock down that 10-foot birdie putt with the mesmerizing view of the river right in front of you. I hope you knock it in with ease! Making the turn onto the back nine, you may find many shots hard to hit as you stare at the river flowing by sky-high, snow-capped mountains. You might even spot a kayaker, or two.
When it comes to a challenging but enjoyable course, this is the place. The front nine is open — you can grip it and rip it like John Daly. The back nine brings target golf into play. Sure, you can still grip and rip, but the risk/ reward game becomes part of your thought process along with those views. This course is setup for everyone to play with multiple tee boxes so it won’t matter if you’re a single digit handicapper or a first-time player, you’ll enjoy this course. To add even more entertainment, they have footgolf after 5 p.m. Nothing says family fun or an exciting date night like a round of footgolf. Lake Tahoe Golf Course is a reasonably priced showstopper. After your memorable round, as you relax on the patio taking in all that surrounds you while drinking their signature Happier Gilmore, you will surely agree life does not get any better. One small step turns into a giant leap for the National Automobile Museum. This summer you’re able to experience the Center’s newest exhibit Be the Astronaut. Fly a spaceship, pilot a lunar module, or, my favorite, drive a surface rover on Mars. This is one of only two places in the world that uses scientifically verified data to recreate NASA expeditions. Take a seat in the cockpit as 70-inch monitors, touchscreens and industrial-quality joysticks make the experience come to life with animated lighting effects, game visuals and space sounds. Plus, access to the Nevada Space Center is included in price of museum admission. Get ready to geek out and
become a space cadet. If taking off into space isn’t enough for you, then warp into the future at Need 2 Speed, as they’ve transformed their indoor track into a kaleidoscope of lights and colors with black light kart racing. This summer be one of the first to race this special cosmic experience, with glow-in-the-dark barriers, reflective LED lights through the ceiling and illuminated electric karts. Reaching speeds up to 40 mph, driving the course I felt like I was virtually racing in Nintendo’s Mario Kart. This sensory experience is one-of-itskind in Nevada and is an adventure beyond your imagination. Check times online for this intergalactic session. automuseum.org; need2speed.com

Hip community gatherings is the new wave in wellness and Reno/Tahoe-land is keeping up with the trend. In Reno’s Riverwalk District, The Eddy, is a blend of outdoor beer garden meets art spot meets food truck park, and is entirely constructed of shipping containers. This collaborative community space hosts numerous events from live music, free fitness classes, silent discos, and local brewery tap takeovers. All ages are welcome to soak up the sun and play lawn games like oversized Jenga and corn hole, then warm up at their bocce ball court as this is the newest game to takeover downtown. Bundox Bocce is an attraction all on its own. This phenomenal indoor/outdoor space is 22,000-square-feet of fun. Adjacent to the Renaissance Reno Downtown Hotel, it features nine bocce courts, nine skeeball machines, oversized television screens and an enormous full bar. Open Thursday – Sunday, go with a group of friends to watch a sports game while
playing a game! Catch the evening hours at night as the lights go down, the courts are illuminated with colorful LEDs and the vinyls start spinning. Another gaming mecca is The Glass Die, Reno’s first and only board game parlour located in the Midtown District. You and your opponents can gather around nine handcrafted tables to play as many of the 250 games you fancy, free of charge. For those Minecraft fanatics or Dungeon’s and Dragons enthusiasts you can play for hours while tasting 14 beers on tap. theeddyreno.com; bundoxbocce.com; theglassdie.com
Dine + Imbibe
The food forecast is ever changing and Reno/Tahoe follows suit. Around the country, contemporary versions of comfort food are on the rise and chez louie is a haute French-inspired eatery setting the pace. Located inside the Nevada Museum of Art, the modern atmosphere complements the sophisticated menu. For starters try the smoked salmon toasts with local honey drizzle and hand-cut truffle frites with housemade tarragon aioli. Move onto the sole meunière, flour-dusted petrale sole with brown butter, lemon, parsley, pomme purée with grilled asparagus. This certainly is a lighter alternative to traditional deep-fried battered fish. Finish with the caramel budino for a delightful finishing touch. You’ll be happy to know they’ve expanded dinner hours Thursday – Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. Continuing with French influences, Creative Crepes is a fun new interactive establishment in South Lake Tahoe near the Heavenly Village. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, choose a savory or sweet option then watch the “crepe-atier” create this culinary delight in front of your eyes. These light and flavorful bites are fun for the entire family. My favorite is the Chicken Florentine, a blend of Swiss cheese, onions mushrooms, spinach and chicken wrapped in a blanket of fluffy homemade batter, then drizzled with dill chive sauce. For sweetness, I’d go for Nutella, strawberries and banana. And when I do it all over again, I’m going halfsies with a friend to choose both savory and sweet! Another trendy resurgence is fired foods like the Neapolitan-style specialty pies at Lake Tahoe AleWorX. The Pera is my favorite, with a layer of thin crust topped with a bed of arugula sprinkled with mozzarella, gorgonzola and fresh pears, wood fired to perfection. This place tops the charts in cool spots to hang as they also feature the latest in restaurant technology, with self-serve beer taps. For those 21+ you’ll get a wrist band embedded with a chip reader where you’ll have access to a self-pour beer wall fixed with eclectic craft brews from near and far, kombucha, nitro coffee and wine. You only pay for what you pour! I like to make my own sampler and sway in a rocking chair around the fire pit, while listening to live music, nightly 6 to 9 p.m. chez-louie.com; @creative-crepes; laketahoealeworx.com 38 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
Detoxifying fix
There’s been a big push for improved health and wellness in 2017, so following the times I conducted some difficult research at day spas and healing centers. Along my quest, I discovered two incredible detoxifying fixes. In South Lake Tahoe, BioSpirit Day Spa now offers one of the hottest facials on the market, the O2 Lift by Image Skincare. Oxygen facials are best known to exfoliate, illuminate, and oxygenate the skin, which in turn brightens, promotes collagen and hydrates the face, fighting the signs of aging (An endless battle!). This five-step facial starts with a gel-to-milk cleanser, followed by an enzymatic facial peel, and next comes the oxygenation facial masque. Then, a stem cell facial enhancer helps with signs of aging and a tinted moisturized massage gives the face that extra glow. I love the results. For a full body detox, Elevate Wellness combines Traditional Chinese Medicine with the latest functional medicine practices
to restore natural balance. I take good care of my body but I avoid hospitals and think time heals all wounds, so this type of wellness is new for me. I’m hooked. Recently they’ve introduced the Dry Brushing Technique. This has been practiced for centuries but it’s new to this area. Why did I want to try it? Well, I needed a pick-meup as summertime fun, to playing on the beach, late nights and bottomless mimosas are catching up to me. The skin eliminates over one pound of waste acids each day in the average adult (Ewww.). This treatment is a restorative body boost. Start with a full body brush to stimulate lymphatic circulation and a warm towel wipe down. Soothing body butter oil with sage and lavender is massaged followed by an abdominal massage. Then you’ll be wrapped with Himalayan salt packs with a collagen peptide and oatmeal facial. The botanical facial cream and jade rolling was the final touch. I feel awesome, trust me, you need this. massagetahoe.com; elevate-wellness.com

These golf clubhouses offer views, bites and sips for players and spectators alike.
A FAIR WAY TO P L AY By Annie Flanzraich
Before we go any further with this article, I have a confession: I don’t golf. I do, however, enjoy beautiful views, relaxing atmospheres, craft cocktails and seasonal menus. So, if I am at a golf course, you’ll find me at the so-called 19th hole. With more than 50 courses in the Reno/ Tahoe region, there are plenty of clubhouses to wind down at after a round or a long day at the office. Here are some of my favorites: Edgewood Tahoe in Stateline, Nev., offers the perfect place to take in views of Lake Tahoe while enjoying a full meal or just a snack. For a fine dining experience with an ambiance made for memories, check out Edgewood Restaurant and its stunning floor-to-ceiling windows. If you’re in a more casual mood, order the mango mojito at Brooks’ Bar & Deck. Bonus points for sipping it next to the outdoor fire pit while watching the sunset over the lake. edgewoodtahoe.com A local favorite with deals to match, the Carson Valley Country Club’s restaurant in Gardnerville offers an inviting and family oriented atmosphere. Check out this restaurant for lunch or happy hour, which features daily cocktail specials. yourtahoeplace.com PJ’s at Gray’s Crossing in Truckee boasts “casual cuisine with a side of panoramic views.” While you’re taking in those views, sip on one of the restaurant’s signature cocktails, such as the chipotle margarita or blackberry mojito. Or, dine off the restaurant’s seasonal menu featuring regional ingredients. golfintahoe.com Take in stunning views of Mt. Tallac and the Sierra Mountain Range in Lake Tahoe Golf Course’s charming clubhouse. Located in a meadow a few minutes south of Tahoe’s southern shoreline, the space is decorated with lovely mountain touches and includes a full-service restaurant and cocktail bar. laketahoegc.com
Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and a cocktail at the clubhouse at Red Hawk Golf and Resort in the Spanish Springs Valley. This summer, you can also take in a treat for the ears with a concert every Friday and Saturday at David’s Grill. Snag a seat on the patio to dine with a view of the course’s 18th hole. redhawkgolfandresort.com Surround yourself with towering mountains and endless greens with a meal at Toiyabe Golf Club, located at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Washoe Valley. Fish & Fortune
Try MontBleu’s new all-you-can-eat sushi bar If you find yourself hungry after enjoying the beautiful shores of South Lake Tahoe, you should definitely try Fortune inside MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa. With a delicious menu filled with American-Chinese cuisine this restaurant has quickly become a favorite date night escape for my husband and me. The restaurant touts tasty soups, noodles, vegetables, seafood, beef and chicken dishes prepared fresh from the wok — there is something for every discerning palate. They also have a new all-you-can-eat sushi bar that is the best in town! During a recent visit, we had the pleasure of bellying up to the seafood-laden bar to enjoy nigiri and rolls artfully designed by Executive Chef Jon LaRue. These beautifully prepared plates were so appealing they were almost hard to eat. Think precise stacks of Hamachi topped with a dab of spicy sauce, avocado, crab mix and scallions. Or, an elegant Mr. Tim roll named after Tim Tretton, MontBleu General Manager, that’s filled with tempura shrimp and cream cheese beneath a layer of smoked salmon, avocado, thin lemon slices and unagi sauce. Delicious. I can’t forget to mention the impressive bar offerings with Asian beers and a nice variety of sake. The Sho Chiku Bai Mio sparkling sake is one that I will definitely order again. They also have cocktails available from the casino bar. Going a bit out of order here, with all-you-can-eat sushi comes a selection of appetizers, salads and housemade miso soup. The hubs enjoyed some Sriracha mussels while I munched on gyoza. We also ordered the upside down shrimp and tempura upside down crab, both equally fresh and enticing. Fortune’s menu got us like bait on a hook. What’s more? The amazing service. Chef LaRue and his team took the time to learn our preferences and began slinging samplings that were spot on. With the freshest fish and seafood, Fortune should certainly be on your dining itinerary during this trip and the many more to come! Destination Drinking
Explore the Reno/Tahoe region with the help of a beverage, or two There’s this quote that sums up my favorite summer activity: “I’m outdoorsy in that I like to drink wine on patios.” And, I think a good portion of the region’s population agrees with me. So much so that this area offers a variety of festivals, tours and regular monthly events centered on alcotourism. In addition to pouring a variety of libations, these attractions are also a fun way to explore the area.

POT TING THE MUD
With a mission to bring their organic mud to the market, they also wanted to build a company encompassing earthfriendly values. Green. Recyclable. Made in the U.S. It took them two years to find a jar, lid and seal that fit those parameters, but they did. Complete with a plantable box made of paper containing wildflower seeds, the packaging has even won a coveted design award among the biggest cosmetic companies.
Smooth on the buttery green mask. Feel as it begins to cool the minute it touches your skin. Wipe away to reveal refreshed, hydrated, beautiful skin. While this may sound like an ad for the next big beauty product engineered in a lab somewhere with a slew of ingredients designed to give your face that special glow, this amazing cosmetic anomaly was made by miss Mother Nature herself. It’s MudPot. It’s amazing. When Shelly Egbert’s father, David, purchased land on the Black Rock Desert outside Gerlach, Nev., he did so with the intention of flying the falcons he so lovingly raised for decades. He had no idea he was trekking upon a mini Yellowstone with geological features abound. Hot springs, cold springs, bubbling mud pots, fumaroles. You name it and they’ve got it. “We’d see these little mud volcanoes,” Egbert says. “This rich, bubbly mud comes boiling out of the ground. We found it had some amazing healing properties with sunburn, bug bites and acne.” Seven years ago, Egbert was teaching a homeschool lesson to her children. The conversation quickly led to the need to create a business that would be mindful of the environment. One of my more sarcastic sons made a comment, “All we have is a bunch of mud.” Bingo! Black Rock Mud Company was born.
58 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
Inside the trendy jar is the good stuff. From shovel to shelf, Black Rock Mud Company’s MudPot is just that ... mud. This illite clay contains over 50 naturally occurring trace elements that are beneficial and promote healthy skin. Free of chemicals, dyes, fillers, preservatives and scents, Mudpot leaves the skin feeling clean, energized, refreshed and revived. Egbert explains that this is due to three very important properties:
• Detoxifying: It pulls the gook out
drawing toxins and impurities from the skin.
• Ph Balancing: Doesn’t matter if you
have normal or oily skin, the pure clay tailors to any skin type or condition.
• Healing: A toning action brings fresh blood to damaged cells, revitalizing the complexion and tightening pores.
What’s more, if you’ve been to a geothermal hot spring you may have noticed a sulfuric smell. The site for Black Rock Mud Company has no odor, making its MudPot even more enjoyable. “You won’t find any clay on the market like it. I hate to be bragging about mud, but it’s really awesome mud,” Egbert says. To purchase MudPot or find out more about Black Rock Mud Company, visit blackrockmud.com. All In The Same Boat Getting your boat water ready: Clean, Drain and Dry Courtesy of the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program
I
f you own a boat and you live in or visit the Tahoe Basin regularly, then you’re probably no stranger to the Lake Tahoe Watercraft Inspection Program.
an additional $10 charged for ballast systems, so boaters are encouraged to heed the “Clean, Drain and Dry” mantra.
All watercraft entering Lake Tahoe waters, including motorized boats, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats and sea planes, must be free of invasive species prior to launch. Inspections are performed at a number of locations around the Tahoe Basin, and an inspection seal and sticker are required when you launch a motorized boat at Lake Tahoe, Echo Lake or Fallen Leaf Lake.
After a visiting boater has paid the annual fee, obtained a sticker, and received an inspection at a roadside station, the inspector will then attach a wire “seal” between the boat and trailer. Boaters may then proceed to their favorite launch ramp or facility to have their seal checked and their boat cleared for launch.
Any watercraft suspected of being contaminated with invasive species must be decontaminated before it can be launched. Decontamination is an extra cost, but can be avoided by arriving at the inspection station clean, drained and dry, which also expedites the process.
For more information on how to “Clean, Drain and Dry” and for inspection station locations, visit tahoetoatInspections.com
The inspections are a vital step in keeping aquatic invasive species out of Lake Tahoe. Invaders can damage a lake’s ecosystem because they multiply and spread rapidly, leaving behind murky water and beaches fouled with sharp shells, weeds, and the odor of decay. Aquatic weeds can choke off marinas and coves, and exotic or nonnative fish can disrupt the food chain. “It’s in everyone’s interest to arrive clean, drained, and dry,” said Dennis Zabaglo, TRPA’s aquatic resources program manager. One boat that may have been inadvertently contaminated during an excursion on another lake or waterway could carry tiny larvae or pieces of vegetation that quickly spread and have a devastating effect on Lake Tahoe. Before arriving at an inspection station, clean your vessel of all mud, dirt, oil or debris; drainlive wells, engine and ballast tanks; and dry everything by opening hatches, lowering outdrive and removing bilge plug. Annual fees for motorized watercraft, based on the length of the vessel, start at $35 for boats up to 17 feet and increase based on the length of the vessel, going up to $121 for boats over 39 feet long. There is also a $35 fee for decontamination, with

Job’s Peak is the first crown to catch the sun every day. It’s also the one that’s captured Kate’s heart since childhood, the mountain she shares with adrenaline junkies in search of a healthy serving of jaw-dropping views and means for justifying the inevitable Basque meal at the end of the day. At Edgewood Tahoe, we've crafted new beginnings amongst a storied setting. Where daydreamers unwind in sand while adventurer-seekers explore the Sierras. And where both—loungers and roamers alike—are met with personalized service, unprecedented stewardship, and unparalleled accommodations. Edgewood Tahoe is more than an alpine Lodge, more than an acclaimed golf course, more than a serene spa. It is a setting for inspiration, a catalyst for adventure, a world-class destination to discover and enjoy. Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, designed by George Fazio in 1968 and later renovated by Tom Fazio, offers the premier setting of a championship caliber golf experience in the High Sierra. Challenging yet fair, the course offers a choice of four sets of tees, ranging in length from 5,343 yards to a demanding 7,529. The Golf Course has been consistently selected by Golf Digest as one of “America's 100 Greatest Public Courses,” and has attracted some of golf’s greatest players, including Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson, John Daly, and Lee Trevino. Edgewood has played host to the USGA's 1980 US Public Links Championship and 1985 US Senior Open Championship, and has been the home to the annual American Century Celebrity Golf Championship since 1991. View more at EdgewoodTahoe.com/Golf or visit the Golf Shop inside the Clubhouse. Nestled in a private, yet expansive area on the second floor of the Lodge is The Spa at Edgewood Tahoe—an inviting 8,500 sq. ft. space that offers guest uninterrupted serenity amongst a peaceful and inviting atmosphere. With a stunning streamlined design aesthetic influenced by the innate beauty of the area's natural surroundings, the Spa inspires in its guest relaxation, rejuvenation, and unmistakable inner balance. The Spa proudly uses and offers for purchase Eminence Organics, Naturopathica, and Aveda products. These brands utilize only the finest organic ingredients and are sourced from sustainable or renewable origins. View more at EdgewoodTahoe.com/Spa or visit the Spa on the second floor of the Lodge. Edgewood Restaurant is South Lake Tahoe's greatest hidden gem. With stunning floor-to-ceiling windows and an elegant lodge aesthetic, diners enjoy striking views of mountains, pines, and the glistening sapphire lake while celebrating golden anniversaries and creating diamond memories. Fresh cuisine is prepared daily and matched with a carefully selected and diverse wine list, creating a dining experience that's nothing short of noteworthy. Be sure to reserve a table just before dark to secure a front row seat to the best show Tahoe has to offer—the vibrant Sierra sunset. View more at EdgewoodTahoe.com/Restaurant or visit the Restaurant inside the Clubhouse.
Conveniently located inside the Lodge is the Bistro, a full-service space open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Bistro serves as Edgewood's refined, yet casual, dining option for families, friends, and foodies alike. Boasting warm woods and streamlined design details, Bistro offers guests an aesthetic both mountain-chic and urban-contemporary, creating a striking setting for diners to enjoy the freshest seasonal fare in both indoor and outdoor tables. View more at EdgewoodTahoe.com/Bistro or visit the Bistro on the first floor of the Lodge.
Honored by Golf Digest as one of the "Best Golf Pubs" in the world, Brooks' Bar and Deck is home to a setting both striking and serene. Located just off of Edgewood's picturesque 18th hole, Brooks' offers golfers and guests stunning views of all the magic the Sierras have to offer—from sunsets saturated in striking gem tones to the glassy blue waters of the mesmerizing Alpine lake. Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, Brooks' boasts a sprawling deck, vaulted wood-beam ceilings, and walls of long-paned glass windows—creating a warm space and welcome for families and friends to enjoy refined comfort food and to imbibe in signature cocktails and craft beers. View more at EdgewoodTahoe.com/Brooks or visit Brooks’ inside the Clubhouse.
