ARTS & CULTURE
Tahoe’s Captured Beauty Take home some of our region’s finest art. By Holly Zynda
Encircling the beauty of Lake Tahoe in full spring bloom are a number of premier boutique art galleries that house some of our region’s most alluring pieces. Local artists and those from abroad have witnessed the charm of the Reno/Tahoe area and captured it in various artistic mediums. Local gallery owners, some who are also artist themselves, provide this beauty to the public. I have perused the offerings and selected the following galleries that will allow you to share in and display the beauty of the lake and surrounding high desert mountains, as well as prestigious art from around the world, in your own home or business.
A FOCUS ON PHOTOS Given the natural appeal of the region, many of the galleries sell photographs of the Tahoe area. One of those is The Eadington Gallery on the north side of the lake. A seemingly diminutive gallery at first sight, this showroom has a labyrinthian layout with a floorplan more like a small museum than a traditional gallery. The walls are dotted with photos of Tahoe by three local artists, including the gallery owner. Eadington offers high-end prints of photographs on canvas or metal from small to large scale. theeadingtongallery.com Emanate Gallery is another such shop, offering photography by local artists, paintings, several sculptures, as well as custom framing. Located in The Crossing at South Lake Tahoe shopping center, Emanate is locally owned and operated by Benjamin Sullivan and Angela and Ron Cabrera. Ben lends his artistic eye to the small shop, displaying photographs he took around the world, while Angela contributes her framing skills. They also display photographs, paintings, and giclees by artists from the Tahoe area. emanategallery.com
12 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
THE UPPER ESCHELON For outfitting a second home or business with fine art from the region, Stremmel Gallery, in the heart of Reno, is a great fit. With a museum-like feel and a great use of white space to frame and highlight each piece, Stremmel offers more high-end art, with pieces starting in the tens of thousands of dollars. There, I found small- and large-scale sculptures, as well as small and large oil originals. stremmelgallery.com Along similar lines, Marcus Ashley Fine Art Gallery sits in the Raley’s shopping center near Heavenly Village, where I stopped in after a day shooshing down the slopes. With prices ranging from $200 to $80,000, Marcus Ashley provides an array of art for the more discerning crowd. This gallery offers elegant sculptures, paintings, glassworks, and other media from 30 world-renown artists to primarily tourists and second home owners. It even has a large “secret collection” by Dr. Seuss. marcusashley.com Across the street from Markus Ashley, Benko Art Gallery stands apart of from the other galleries in the Reno/Tahoe area with its contemporary offerings by younger, local artists. And you’ll love the greeting from the large St. Bernard shop dog. This industrial gallery put off a more edgy vibe with bold colors, mixed media, and even clothing made in-shop inspired by the art sold there. benkoartgallery.com
A MORE PERSONAL TOUCH I enjoy supporting local artsellers, and sometimes I am more in the mood for a mom-and-pop feel. For these times, Blue Wolf Studios in King’s Beach is always a good bet. Here, I browsed among oneof-a-kind souvenirs handmade by local artisans. Hidden between the Taco Bell and Willard’s Lakeshore Sports in King’s Beach, this small gallery is packed with treasures ranging from jewelry to
Photo this page: Nevada Museum of Art
pottery. When something a little more traditional is in order, they recommend heading over to Vista Gallery and Framing, who’s owner often returns the favor. bluewolftahoe.com; vistagallerytahoe.com At Vista, also fairly hidden next to Jason’s Beachside Grill about a block down, I found prints that capture the beauty of Tahoe for any price range (starting at $30). They also offer custom framing or enlargements of their prints up to any size you desire, making this a great shop for both tourists looking to capture a bit of our local beauty to bring home, as well as very high-end buyers. Along similar lines, Artists Co-Op Gallery Reno also provides a small-town feel and a low-key, local, earthy vibe. With folk music playing over the radio, handmade walking sticks, woodworking, and pottery, as well as everything from pencil drawings to oil paintings lining the walls, the co-op transported me right back to the 60s. artistsco-opgalleryreno.com
DIY GALLERY When searching for a place to make art, in addition to purchasing it, I found the Carson Valley Arts Council down in the Carson Valley. In addition to displaying a local artist in their gallery for several months at a time, the Arts Council provides space for local artists to teach pottery, woodworking, painting and more. There is also a shop on the corner that displays handmade goods for sale, including, but not limited to, knitted scarves, woven baskets, jewelry and wall hangings. cvartscouncil.com Whatever part of town you’re in, there are a variety of galleries with different offerings where you’ll find a lovingly made piece from the Reno/Tahoe region to remember your visit, share with a loved one, or display in your home.

ARTS & CULTURE
See some of the region’s most recognizable art pieces. By Annie Flanzraich
There is no shortage of art to see and experience in Reno/Tahoe. From large-scale sculptures of sea creatures to gold-plated vehicles, there's an exhibit for every taste. It might be impossible to see every piece of art on one trip, so here are seven pieces we think you should cross off your bucket list.
Great Scott! Make like Marty McFly and head to the National Automobile Museum in downtown Reno to see one of the only two 24-karatgold-plated DeLoreans in the world. This rare vehicle appeared as part of American Express’ 1979 promotional campaign for Gold cardholders. Back then, it cost $85,000, and a little door ding could cost $24,000 to fix. There’s little risk of that happening at the Automobile Museum, which displays more than 200 other noteworthy automobiles. automuseum.org
Cut f rom a different cloth Ann Johnston’s large-scale quilts imaginatively represent the Sierra Nevada’s diverse geological makeup. On display at the Nevada Museum of Art through May 19, this exhibition features more than 30 of Johnston’s quilts, made from cloth she hand-dyed. Johnston sewed the quilts by hand and by machine, using patterns and textures to create the Sierra's mountain peaks, lakes, and rock formations visitors to the area might recognize. nevadaart.org
Black Rock City in downtown Reno Within a four-block area of downtown Reno, you can see three large-scale Burning Man art installations. In City Plaza, located at the corner of Virginia and First streets, experience two pieces of public art: Space Whale and Believe. Created in 2013 by artists Jeff Schomberg and Laura Kimpton, the 70-foot-long Believe is made of 20-foot-high, rustic, block letters. A few steps away is Space Whale, a life-sized, illuminated stained-glass-and-steel sculpture of a humpback whale mother and calf created by Matthew Schultz
14 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
and The Pier Group. Walk a few blocks to Bicentennial Park on the corner of First and Ralston streets, and you can see in Portal of Evolution a butterfly-like sculpture by Bryan Tedrick. reno.gov
It’s not Icky! Look toward the ceiling at the entry to the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum and gaze upon a 50-foot-long, lifesize replica of Nevada's state fossil, the Ichthyosaur. Creator Jerry Snyder built the 2,500-pound puppet in 2013 and displayed it at Burning Man. In 2014, the Ichthyosaur moved to its permanent home in the Discovery Museum and transformed from a marionette to a sculpture. nvdm.org
Go for the gold Take a trip back in time, learn about the 1960 Winter Olympics and see the rings from that year’s event at Squaw Valley. The free Olympic Museum, located at 8,200 feet at High Camp on Squaw Valley’s upper mountain, includes a photo-worthy podium and Olympic rings suspended above a backdrop of Lake Tahoe. Elsewhere on the property, you can see the Olympic rings in The Village at Squaw Valley as well as the flames that still burn in front of the Tower of Nations. squawalpine.com Show us which of these items you’ve crossed off your list by tagging us on social media! Use #renoartbucketlist and share a photo with us of your own art tour.
LET US MOVE YOU. More than 200 thought-provoking, awe-inspiring pieces of automobile history on display to ignite your imagination.

"it’s the perfect season to revel in the region’s many exhilarating outdoor experiences." Spring fever can spark longing for new adventures. Plus it’s the perfect season to revel in the region’s many exhilarating outdoor experiences. This year, instead of watching the wide grins of folks adept at these activities from afar, join them. Most places provide expert instructors, or you can make it a mission to learn on your own and just rent the needed equipment. Some are weather reliant and only available in late spring, so confirm they’re available before trekking out.
Touring Tahoe on two wheels Since 2001 in South Lake, Mountain West has been a go-to spot for kickstarting regional adventures any time of year. Come spring, once the trails and streets are bike-friendly again, folks eager to tackle Tahoe on two wheels can find many rental options. Fend off fears of going uphill with easy-to-ride e-bikes. These trendy motor- and pedal-powered contraptions can be rented for a couple of hours or all day. When the area’s miles of singletrack are calling instead, grab a fullsuspension or hard-trail mountain bike. Park in their lot, and hit the trails directly from the shop. If you’re smitten, they’ll apply your rental cost towards the purchase of your new two-wheeled toy. mountainwest.rentals When the ski season ends and the trails are – mostly – free of snow, Northstar California’s mountain bike park offers a whole new form of alpine excitement. No matter your skill level, learn to careen safely down their trails with the mountain’s top instructors in private or small group lessons at the Specialized Academy. They provide all needed equipment; you provide the gumption. northstarcalifornia.com

Standing on water Head to Marina PaddleFit in Sparks and learn to walk – ahem, well, stand – on water. With the help of a Stand Up Paddleboard, of course. After some training, certified instructors will get you out on the Sparks Marina, which is especially scenic on a SUP at sunset. Fully transparent Imagine simply floating on Tahoe, seeing nothing beneath you but the crystal-clear lake. Wild Society can make that dream a reality. Beginning in May, paddle from Kings Beach in a transparent kayak equipped with waterproof cases to keep your phone safe while taking epic pictures, and speakers to create your own soundtrack for the ethereal experience. Once night falls, rent a colorful, lighted kayak with a spotlight illuminating the lake up to 20 feet down. Or take a guided tour to some of their favorite spots, complete with a gourmet picnic. wildsocietylt.com Grab a friend, family member or get some solo time in this spring, and make it an inspiring season by tackling a fresh, new activity.
Spring skiing of a different sort Beginning in late April on Tahoe’s west shore, learn to waterski or wakeboard at High Sierra Waterski School. For 43 years, their pros have taught kids and adults the basics or

For years now, I’ve dreamed of owning an Airstream. The cute shape, sophisticated style and fun personality of these beloved travel trailers just screams, “America.” This is why, when Zephyr Cove Resort announced they purchased three new 30-foot International Signature Airstreams, I did a serious jump for joy. Now, not only can my family experience glamping at a whole new level (and without the hefty price tag), we get to do it in absolute paradise. Speaking of paradise … Zephyr Cove Resort is just that. Nestled on the shores of Lake Tahoe, this place is a favorite with beautiful shoreline, great camping and tons of amenities. Whether you decide to stay here or swing by during your visit, be sure to hop aboard the M.S. Dixie II paddle wheeler for an amazing lake cruise. The 500-passenger beauty departs daily for daytime, dinner and private trips to Emerald Bay and back. For a truly special excursion on the water, on Wednesday evenings try their Sipping at Sundown Cruise aboard the Tahoe Paradise yacht. Talk about awe-inspiring views of the lake! At the Zephyr Cove Marina, you’ll find endless amounts of lakeside fun. With a mile-long beach, enjoy volleyball, fishing or just a lazy day soaking up the sun. (Don’t forget the sunscreen, BTW.) Looking for a little adventure on the water? Take the flight of a lifetime on a sky-high parasail or test your waterskiing and wakeboarding skills. They even have a new pontoon boat and six new Searay SPX 230 Outboard speedboats that you can rent. When you’re hungry, just pop over to one of the onsite eateries. The Zephyr Cove Restaurant offers local and sustainable cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Try their smoked salmon benedict for a delicious start to your day. Oh, and don’t forget to swing by later for one of their old-fashioned milkshakes. Or, bask in the sun at Sunset Bar and Grille where you can enjoy your favorite adult libation and specialty frozen drink. Order some fries and other pub fare while you take in all that is Lake Tahoe. With the right amenities, tons of things to do and amazing views, it’s no wonder Zephyr Cove Resort is at the top of the list in South Lake. Be sure to get your glamp on in Tahoe! zephyrcove.com 22 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

OUT OF THIS W O R L D HOW TO ENJOY THE STARS IN THE SIERRA. By Jen Peng
The Reno/Tahoe area is known for its stunning daytime vistas, but with plentiful clear nights and wide-open dark skies, it’s also a spectacular place to see the stars. Here are a few ways to enjoy the night sky.
FIND YOUR OWN STARGAZING ADVENTURE To find a good stargazing location, look for wide, unobstructed horizons, away from light pollution. Beach or mountaintop? It’s up to you. Expansive views and easy access makes Emerald Bay a great spot to enjoy the stars. On a calm night, look for celestial reflections in the water. Head to the south end of the parking lot, the pullouts around the bay, or the rock outcropping by Eagle Falls. parks.ca.gov For great south-facing beaches and plenty of facilities, including restrooms, head to Sand Harbor. Make the most of your visit by combining a day at the beach with a barbecue at sunset, then be dazzled as the stars come out at night. parks.nv.gov

The additional elevation of Spooner Lake helps minimize ambient light pollution, offering dark skies looking east and south. For the best views, head to the dam at the north end of Spooner Lake or the trail towards Marlette Lake. parks.nv.gov Wherever you go, a little preparation will help make your experience more enjoyable. Bring warm clothes, a blanket or sleeping bag, a thermos containing a hot beverage, and binoculars, if you have some. Download a stargazing app so you know what you’re looking at. Look for Mars during April and May, Jupiter and Saturn starting June, and the Milky Way starting late June. Time your view for a moonless night for a sight you won’t soon forget! Or catch some falling stars during a meteor shower: see the Lyrids April 16 – 28 (peak April 21 – 22) and the Eta Aquariids April 19 – May 28 (peak May 4-5).
STAR PARTIES AND GUIDED TOURS Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory features indoor and outdoor telescopes and holds star parties every Saturday, with lectures (7:30 p.m.) by Mike Thomas and science demonstrations (7 p.m.) by Tom Herring on the second and third Saturday of each month, respectively. On the third Friday of the month, the Astronomical Society of Nevada holds their star party at Sparks Marina (from just before sunset until the last question is asked). wnas-astronomy.org; wnc.edu/observatory; astronomynv.org
FOR A LUXURIOUS EXPERIENCE Join star guide Tony Berendsen and Tahoe Star Tours at The Dark Skies Cosmoarium at Northstar Resort. Starting June 20, astronomy shows are held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Enjoy live presentations, then view the cosmos through high-powered Celestron telescopes in style, with comfortable seating, blankets, heaters, hot beverages and s’mores. tahoestartours.com; northstarcalifornia.com For the adventurous, Tahoe Adventure Company offers guided full moon and astronomy kayaks or hikes in the Tahoe Vista Recreation Area and around Truckee, the North Shore and East Shore (May 28, May 29, June 17 and June 27). tahoeadventurecompany.com
OUT OF THIS WORLD LEARNING EXPERIENCES If you can’t make it outdoors, enjoy the stars at the Fleischmann Planetarium. Blast off into space and put yourself right into the action in their full-dome digital planetarium shows on a variety of space-related topics. There’s a free Exhibit Hall with interactive displays, and public telescope viewings twice a month. The Nevada Space Center and the Challenger Learning Center of Nevada at the National Auto Museum also offer interactive exhibits, like “Be the Astronaut,” “Space Academy” programs, Challenger missions and science-related Dome shows. planetarium.unr.nevada. edu; nevadaspacecenter.org; nevadachallenger.org However you decide to enjoy the stars in Reno/ Tahoe, get out there, expand your horizons and get out of this world!

Whether on a hot date, celebrating an anniversary, or planning a girls/guys night out be sure to experience our 21+ nightlife for an unforgettable evening out on the town.
Sure Reno/Tahoe is one of the best family friendly vacation destinations, but did you know there are many hot spots here that offer exclusively 21-and-up entertainment? Here’s a quick look at some places to checkout sans kiddos.
PREGAMING To start, I highly recommend a stop at Zeppelin in south Reno. Here you’ll find an array of upscale food, as well as a full bar. The bartenders make artfully crafted beverages, including seasonal drinks; their bloody Mary is adorned with a full meal, complete with muscles and pickles. Zeppelin also has a charcuterie board with custom sushi-style ordering, so you can order only the meats and cheeses you want. This bar/restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday. zeppelinreno.com
DRESS TO IMPRESS When I’m dressed to the nines, I head to one of the area’s high-end clubs where they offer private booths and bottle service. Lex in the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno offers a large venue with a pool seated right in the middle of the club sandwiched by a pair of go-go dancing platforms and three bars to choose from. It also has a large dance floor, and both sides of the venue are lined with private booths, where patrons can get flaming bottle service. The crème de la crème of clubs, Lex also brings in the hottest DJs, like DJ P-Jay and Mike Fusion. lexnightclub.com

ENTERTAINMENT In South Lake, there are two high-end clubs to choose from. At Peek, located in Harrah’s Casino, I enjoy the five-star experience and find DJs from around the world. On Fridays, ladies and locals get in free before 11 p.m. Be aware, Peek also serves as a show and concert venue, so be sure to check out the calendar before you go. peeknightclub.uvtix.com Just down the street in the Montbleu Resort, Casino and Spa, Opal is perfect for groups, especially bachelor/ette parties, and offers private booths tiered down from $1500. I go there for a more Vegas-style experience and to enjoy the beats of DJs from around northern California and Nevada. montbleuresort.com
GOING UNDERGROUND When looking for a more underground club scene, I head to 1Up in Reno, which sports an industrial vibe. The club owners work hard to keep the club constantly evolving, including adding a stimulating laser array. At 1Up, there is a generally younger crowd bouncing to house and EDM on Thursday through Saturday nights, sometimes until sunrise. 1upreno.com In between Peek and Opal in South Lake sits Xhale, an underground club and hooka lounge. This venue, lined with black light murals, hosts local DJs as well as special guest DJs from around the nation and caters to women, providing a safe and inviting environment where I head for a puff, a sip, or a space to dance out my day, since they are open 360 nights a year. hookahbarlaketahoe.com Whether on a hot date, celebrating an anniversary, or planning a girls/guys night out be sure to experience our 21+ nightlife for an unforgettable evening out on the town.

A lineup of favorite free-flowing beverages in Reno/Tahoe. By Rae Matthews, Elevation Eats
Welcome to the draft, though this is not every college athlete’s dream, I’m referring to some tasty draught drinks right here in the Sierra. Beverages from the tap, of course, started with beer, and date back as far as the 17th century (possibly further). Originally, the beer was in wooden casks and gravity was the primary mode of conveyance. This is still done today and is known as real ale by enthusiasts. Then the 20th century saw the advent of the pressurized keg, though this didn’t become the norm till about the 1970s. Now it is so popular that other beverages are getting in on the mix. Check out these awesome ways to enjoy a delicious draft. 40 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
FROTHY COFFEE Yes, that’s right, coffee now comes on tap. For all of us who say they need coffee in an IV drip, this is as close as we’re going to get. Nitro cold brew is a style of coffee that is pressurized with nitrogen (like a Guinness) and comes out with a creamy texture. It is just starting to make its mark on the map. Like most good ideas, it seems to have sprung up almost simultaneously in multiple locations all since 2011. But word has spread of this most profound idea, and now it can be found right here.

Bibo Coffee Co. offers an enticing assortment of flavor-infused cold brews on tap and you can pack them up in a growler. Down in South Lake Tahoe is Revive Coffee and Wine, a local favorite with a large, charming outdoor space that can be reserved for private parties, and they’ve joined the cold brew draft train. oldworldcoffee.com; hubcoffeeroasters.com; bibocoffeecompany.com; revivecoffeewine.com
BOTTOMLESS WINE Well there’s probably a bottom somewhere, but we haven’t found it yet. Wine has now joined the movement of draft beverages. Tahoe Pourhouse in South Lake Tahoe has run full steam ahead with this idea. They feature no less than 20 self-serving wine taps. With a great location and delicious food, it’s very easy to take your time here. Reserve Wine Bar in the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno takes this concept up a notch, by offering 88 options to choose from in their Wineemotion wine dispensing system. Pour yourself your favorite or treat yourself to the most extensive self-guided wine tasting available. tahoepourhouse.com; grandsierraresort.com BEER, STILL FIRST PICK IN THE DRAFT We can’t possibly talk about beverages on tap and not mention beer. The question is not “who has beer on tap?” because who doesn’t? The question is, “who is awesome at it?” Here are those in Reno/Tahoe who take their draft picks seriously, for the love of beer. Beer NV in Reno does draft beer by sheer volume. With 60 craft and import beers on tap, they are the envy of beer lovers (pun intended). They are also very community minded and support a number of local nonprofits. They do not, however, provide food, so plan to bring food in from several close eateries. Mellow Fellow with locations in Reno and Truckee, offers 40 beers on tap as well as hard cider. They also serve sausages made in house. A staple to the Reno beer scene is The Brewer’s Cabinet. They offer their own selection of funky brews as well as guest

They feature a respectable draft beer (and cider) selection, but best of all, these are the same people that brought you Tahoe Art Haus & Cinema, so they offer a menu that can be enjoyed at the theater. tahoetaphaus.com Down in South Lake Tahoe, and with a new location at Stateline, the beer flows freely at Lake Tahoe Aleworx. Here all 25 craft beer taps are self serve, as well as the three wine taps, one kombucha and one nitro coffee. You can sample as you go! Upon arrival, you are outfitted with a wristband that tracks your pours by the ounce, so you are in charge of the draft. They also have some of the best oven-fired pizza in town. Every day of the month there is new featured beer. And finally, a must visit in South Lake Tahoe is Cold Water Brewery & Grill, where they bring the draft to you. The most important question of the morning while vacationing at the lake. Breakfast and brunch may seem synonymous but choosing between them will, in fact, determine the course of the rest of your day. And when you’re on vacation here at Lake Tahoe, with so much to see and do, this is a crucial decision. The difference is all in the name. Breakfast is the “breaking of your fast,” or the first thing you ingest in the morning after a long night of not eating in your sleep. Brunch is the combination of breakfast and lunch and so represents the consumption of two meals at once. Both can be a delightful way to start your day. Here is what Lake Tahoe has to offer:
BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS In this corner, and reigning champion, we have Breakfast! Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day, even if it is the most neglected by American standards (the sample sentence in the dictionary for the word breakfast is actually “I don’t eat breakfast.”), and we couldn’t agree more. Breakfast is the fuel that revs your engine in the morning, and if you are here for some intense Tahoe adventure, then breakfast is your contender. But in order to power your day it must be done right. Lukewarm coffee and a stale bagel will not be sufficient adventure sustenance. On the South Shore you’ll find two intriguingly named diners, Bert’s Café and, across the street, Ernie’s Coffee Shop. This is for
real, and they are named for the actual people who started them up. These are local favorites, and we locals tend to be loyal to one or the other even though they both offer delicious fair. bertscafe. com; erniescoffeeshop.com Also on the griddle in South Lake Tahoe is Bear Beach Café, which offers home-made muffins and biscuits to complement their lake views; The Red Hut Café (also with locations in Stateline, Carson City and Reno), which has been a South Lake staple for 50 years; Heidi’s Pancake House, with their various pancake stacks including one with bacon mixed right into the batter. bearbeachcafe.com; redhutcafe.com; heidislaketahoe.com;

FOOD & DRINK Inside of Heavenly Village is Creative Crepes, offering a selection of 25 different crepes ranging from sweet to savory. They’ve managed to take all things breakfast, such as the scrambler or the strawberry short cake, wrap them up and make them French and portable. Take your crepe to go and still have a hearty breakfast on the run. Also in Heavenly Village is Driftwood Café, which offers “outrageous omelettes” and “wacky waffles,” as well as breakfast on the go. There is the institution, Meyer’s Downtown Café, which is dog friendly and well known for their hospitable owners and southern-style sweet tea. And finally, A Cup of Cherries, which offers healthy, but hearty, locally sourced fast-breaking options. creativecrepes.com; driftwoodtahoe.com; @meyer’s-down-town-café; acupofcherries.com Just north of South Lake Tahoe on the Nevada side is the historic Zephyr Cove Restaurant. Zephyr Cove has been a favorite lakeside retreat since 1862. Take in the beautiful view with a classic smoked salmon benedict or have a little hash with your hollandaise sauce. On the Nevada side you’ll also find Casey’s, a down home style bar and grill. Named for their family dog that lived a whopping 23 years, Casey’s offers fluffy souffle omelets with “has browns” in a relaxed, get-to-know-your-neighbor atmosphere. zephyrcove.com; caseystahoe.net On the West Shore you’ll find The Dam Café (cause there’s a dam in Tahoe City), conveniently located near the beaten path with breakfast burritos and sandwiches aplenty; Rosie’s Café, which is packed to the brim with interesting Tahoe kitsch; and The Old Post Office Café in Carnelian Bay, which offers a classic Americana breakfast in the old post office building. Around the bend you’ll find Kings Café in Kings Beach, with their lakeside breakfast tacos, and Sunshine Deli in Incline Village, famous for their quiche and cozy atmosphere. visittahoecity.org; rosiescafe.com; theoldpostofficecafe.com; @kings-café; sunshinedeli.com
Coming back down the West Shore, Café Zenon in Tahoe City offers a multi-cultural brunch on the weekends, which includes anything from brioche French toast to kim chi fried rice, and Fire Sign Café takes mimosas to a new level with their fresh-squeezed juice and “mug-mosas.” cafezenon.com; firesigncafe.com Back on the South Shore there is the famous Edgewood Golf Course. Golf and brunch are old friends, and at The Bistro at Edgewood that friendship comes with a view and a crispy side of bacon. Jimmy’s Restaurant at the Landing Resort and Spa offers a full English breakfast and a well-stocked bar. For bloody Mary enthusiasts, Coldwater Brewery and Grill offers a Sunday brunch with a build-your-own bloody mary bar. And if you like your brunch a little Greek, Artemis Lakefront Café will pack your brunch inside a pita. Their Greek breakfast replaces sausage and toast with gyro meat and pita bread, and their baklava French toast is drizzled with orange honey and crusted with pistachios. Opa! edgewoodtahoe.com; thelandingtahoe.com; tahoecoldwaterbrewery.com; artemislakefrontcafe.com
DING! DING! DING! And the winner is … Well it’s a close competition. It all depends on how you like to vacation here at Lake Tahoe. Personally, I like food more than I like adventure, so I lean toward brunch, but really, I’m too full to decide and I’m getting kind of sleepy.
BRUNCH PACKS A PUNCH And in the other corner we have the challenger, Brunch! Brunch is the more recent American tradition of pure indulgence. All foods are welcome at brunch, resulting in never-before-seen food combinations thanks to the bunch buffet. Plus, alcohol. bloody marys and mimosas are an integral part of the brunch experience, and when combined with full stomachs, tend to equal nap time. So if your Tahoe vacation is about recovering from that bachelor/ ette party or just relaxing, putting your feet up, and taking in the view, then brunch is the contender for you. Brewforia Beer Market in Incline Village offers a beer brunch. This is not a drill. It’s an assortment of oversized plates and fancy alcoholic beverages sure to send you right back to bed. Also, on the north side of the lake is Spindleshanks Tahoe Restaurant in Kings Beach, making brunch fancy with their “smoked trout bennie,” and Cascades Restaurant at the Resort at Squaw Creek, which makes the brunch buffet gourmet with their sweeping views of Squaw Valley. brewforia.com; spindleshankstahoe.com; destinationhotels.com/squawcreek

Mouthwatering food available for delivery and pickup in Reno/Tahoe. By Heidi Bethel
If your vacations are anything like mine, sometimes the last thing I want to do after a busy day exploring a new place is get ready to head out for a meal. Even the thought of packing up the family, making sure everyone has shoes on, and getting buckled in the car can be exhausting. Despite some serious effort to convince the kiddo and my husband that we can make a balanced meal from the scant remains in our traveling snack inventory, we usually order in. Should you find yourself with the same dilemma, lucky visitor, you’ll be happy to discover there are many delivery services and fantastic eateries that will bring their wares to you.
Pizza Pie Sure there are the tried and true chain delivery options, but if you’re looking for some quality pizza and Italian food in South Lake Tahoe then Blue Dog Gourmet Pizza is the place. In Reno, Noble Pie Parlor serves some seriously good grub — be sure to try their wings and famous calzones. And Lamppost Pizza in south Reno has tasty options, including a gluten-free menu. bluedogpizzatahoe.com; noblepieparlor.com; lamppostpizzareno.com

Get trendy with local brands and shops celebrating all things headwear. Hats are everywhere. Look around, I bet you see someone rocking some headwear right now. Or, maybe you have one on! Hats are a great way to express yourself and show off your favorite team, a place you’ve visited or where you’re from.

Speaking of wearing a hat with your hometown, Reno/Tahoe residents are always proud to display where they’re from! Which is why branded hat companies have been popping up all over the Sierra. And why wouldn’t they? With an average of 251 days of sunshine, we LOVE our hats!
If you’re from this area or have spent some time here, I’m sure you’ve spotted those rad hats with the truck on the front. These colorful trucker hats are known as bigtruck®. Not only do they have endless colors and designs inspired by California mountain life, they also work with brands and companies around the globe to create cobranded hats featuring both brands’ logos, colorways and designs. Between my husband and I, we have at least five different styles of these hats lying around … From purchasing our own to being handed one with a company’s logo, we love to rock them! If you’re shopping in Truckee, stop by their office and grab a hat or design your own bigtruck® hat by picking from an assortment of patches, hat styles and thread colors. bigtruck.com

Hats are a great way to express yourself
Ah yes, mountain life is indeed the best life. You’ll likely start to notice a theme here! Which brings me to another favorite, Tahoe Nevada Love. This company was started by two Nevadans with a mission to “inspire Nevada locals to be as excited and anxious about their adventurous passion to protect and enjoy Lake Tahoe.” Their classic hat style includes the outline of Lake Tahoe with a heart inside, but they also have many other awesome designs with Nevadafocused phrases — Battle Born, Home Grown, High Fives & Mountain Vibes, and more! tahoenevadalove.com
Introducing, Reno eNVy where they’ve embodied the phrase “Home Means Nevada.” Their styles are Nevada focused featuring hats with the state outline, these guys bleed silver and blue. They have much more than hats. If you’re looking for a souvenir or you’re a local wanting to rep your state, check out their location in Reno’s Riverwalk District. homemeansnevada.com
Another brand inspired by Lake Tahoe and its pristine waters is TahoeMade. This local company focuses on everything Tahoe. I’ve personally been loving the corduroy hat designs they have out right not with the “Tahoe, Made in Calif ” printed in style. They have plenty of awesome Tahoe-inspired designs to choose from for both visitors and Tahoe natives. You should also check out their sister brand, Deso Supply Company for a lot of rad hats. tahoemadeattire.com; desosupply.com Up next, another brand sharing their love and passion for Tahoe, Tahoe Heartbeat. Designer Parker Alexander created a distinctive style of hat by incorporating the outline of Lake Tahoe in the center of an EKG line. Other than their logo, they find it fun to experiment with different materials, patterns, colors, etc. They have a passion for what they do, and it shows in their product! A must-see design for sure. tahoeheartbeat.com It’s no doubt we love Tahoe around here, but with this next company I’m going to bring you to the Biggest Little City.

In addition to some amazing local brands, there are several local shops carrying the brands I’ve mentioned above as well as other hat fashions. Shopping in Reno? Check out Nomad Boutique, SierraBelle and Sittie and Sage. They are all located within walking distance of each other in Midtown. These shops are for the ladies and carry a number of fashion-forward styles for the shopaholic inside all of us. nomadboutique.com; shopsierrabelle.com; sittieandsage.com If that’s not enough, head up to Truckee and stroll along the streets downtown where you’ll find many great shops including a second Nomad Boutique location, Dressed Boutique, California 89, Tahoe University and more. @dressedboutiqueCA; california89.com; tahoe-university.com Visiting South Lake Tahoe? You won’t want to miss a chance to stroll the Village Shopping Center! Some of my favorites in the area include Savvy Lake Tahoe, Sealed with a Kiss and Malena Boutique. If those shops aren’t up your alley, there are plenty more to choose from in South Lake. savvylaketahoe.com; shopswak.com; malenaboutique.com Happy hat shopping!

stargazing, to music, water coloring, photography and more, so be sure to check their schedule of events online. Need to fuel those adventures? You’ll love the Sorensen’s Country Café. Serving three delicious meals a day, my favorite item on the menu is their signature beef burgundy stew complemented with a glass of red from their stock of fine wines. On your way out, pick up some memorabilia at their quaint gift shop to remember your already memorable time here. When you’re ready to plan your visit, check real-time weather conditions on their website. They are an official National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather station, giving you the most accurate weather conditions and road access. Sorensen’s is also excited to announce their electric car plug-in stations, partnering with Tesla to support gas-free cars on the road and becoming a Supercharger location to help keep Tahoe blue and the Sierra green. sorensensresort.com
