Nourish your traveler’s soul with a dose of art. By Amanda Horn
No wanderlust to Reno/ Tahoe is complete without a visit to the state’s shining art jewel, the Nevada Museum of Art. From works inspired by the Great Basin to the incomparable Georgia O’Keeffe, the state’s only accredited art museum delivers provocative, breathtaking exhibitions this summer that are guaranteed to nourish your traveler’s soul.
The Art of Jack Malotte On view June 8 – October 20, 2019 Jack Malotte makes artworks that celebrate the Great Basin, with a focus on contemporary political issues faced by Native American people. He infuses wry humor into his work, though the subject matter is sometimes serious and sobering. Born and raised in Reno, Malotte currently resides in Duckwater, Nev.. He is an enrolled member of the South Fork Band of the Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone. This major retrospective showcases the full breadth of Malotte's career, including drawings, sketches, prints, graphics and illustrations. An outdoor, public mural by Malotte on an exterior wall of the museum completes the exhibition. To round out your experience, take home a memory of the show in the form of a 240-page hardcover book published by the Nevada Museum of Art.
Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern On view July 20 – October 20, 2019 Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern takes a new look at how the renowned modernist artist proclaimed her progressive, independent lifestyle through a self-crafted public persona— including her clothing and the way she posed for the camera. The exhibition expands our understanding of O’Keeffe by focusing on her wardrobe, shown for the first time alongside key paintings and photographs. It confirms and explores her determination to be in charge of how the world understood her identity and artistic values. In addition to select paintings and items of clothing, the exhibition presents photographs of O’Keeffe and her homes by Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams, Philippe Halsman, Yousuf Karsh, Cecil Beaton, Andy Warhol, Bruce Weber, Todd Webb, and others. The Nevada Museum of Art is the only venue in the Western United States to host this exhibition, organized by the Brooklyn Museum in New York. To learn more about these and other exhibitions, visit nevadaart.org.

Art connects us all while it decorates our city.
ARTS & CULTURE Public art humanizes the urban environment and influences each visitor’s experience, representing the area’s culture, society, people and perspectives. Art stretches throughout the Great Basin in various forms of self expression inspired by the surrounding beauty and rapidly changing landscape. Let’s take a look at a few places where you can take in all that is Reno/Tahoe.
Creative city escapes The Biggest Little City is a continuously growing public art metropolis, and every time I drive around, I see something new. Reno is also the gateway to Burning Man and is exposed to the works artists from around the world display on the playa. If you have yet to get to Burning Man, you can find some of these installations displayed in the Playa Art Park in downtown Reno’s Riverwalk District. Be sure to spot the Believe sign and the large, intricate Space Whale located right beside the Truckee River. renoriverwalk.org; artspotreno.com Reno is filled with 2D and 3D murals ranging from painted electrical utility boxes to large frieze on the sides of buildings. The Midtown District is particularly saturated with colorful displays and the best way to best navigate your way around is to take a self-guided or docent-led walking tour with ArtSpot Reno — learn about the artists, their concepts, and even find those hidden gems that can be easily overlooked in a bustling city. renomidtowndistrict.com; artspotreno.com
Waters edge The beauty of Lake Tahoe naturally brings out the best in artists and there are plenty of places to view the exceptional work inspired by the area. The Benko Art Gallery in South Lake Tahoe is an eclectic space featuring fresh, contemporary art in all forms, some by Lake Tahoe locals. Benko’s art exhibitions are always a blast, filled with live art and music, raffles, and lots of new friends. Stop by next time you’re in the area. I’m sure you’ll find something that will spark your interest and make you think of Lake Tahoe every time you look at it! benkoartgallery.com
Rural imagination The Carson Valley is a special place with a gorgeous, rural landscape nestled on the east side of the Sierra. There is just something humbling about the area; you’ll feel at home even if it’s your first time visiting. In a place where nature is the artist, you can picture amazing inspiration everywhere. The Carson Valley Art Council is the hub for handcrafts and if you’re planning a visit be sure to check out their diverse art happenings including artist receptions, concert series, local events, workshops and programs. cvartscouncil.com Whether viewing a beautiful painting or a taking a selfie in front of a mural, art connects us all while decorating our city landscape, enhancing the esthetic and telling a visual story. It forces you to slow your stride and take in the surrounding environment. Step outside and get connected to the expression of the city!

ADVENTURE
Shred the gnar this summer! By Holly Zynda
Perhaps you went surfing last year in Hawaii and now you’re in love, maybe you recently moved from SoCal, or you’ve lived in the area for years and always wanted to try it, lucky you surfing is in extreme pursuit by visitors in the high desert. Despite the fact that it lies 200+ miles from the Pacific Coast (and an order of magnitude further from the Atlantic), the Reno/ Tahoe area offers a variety of opportunities for surfers. Whether the wind is blowing strong, creating surfable waves on the lake; boats are kicking up massive wakes; or the Truckee River is providing back-flow among the rapids in downtown Reno, surfers can get their fix along the Nevada/California “boarder.”
ON THE LAKE Straight up surfing the waves of Tahoe is a real possibility on very windy days where gusts can reach 70 mph. High winds create fetch, which after blasting over the vast 191.6-square-mile surface of the lake, organize and form head-high waves to carve or tube. Local surfers are truly dedicated, with a standard surfboard or quiver handy just waiting to brave these special days. The lake is scattered with beach breaks, from the waterfront behind Beach Retreat and Lodge in South Lake to the shores of Sugar Pine

State Park in Stateline. And you can find breakers among the docks in King’s Beach. tahoebeachretreat.com On regular flat-water days, or even slightly choppy days, I like to engage in the “hiking of surfing” — a.k.a. paddleboarding. On all of those in-between days, I take out my touring board from VESL, which I purchased from SUP Tahoe. There are abundant opportunities to paddle-board around the lake on my own or with friends armed with gear from many rental outlets scattered around the lake. Notably, Zephyr Cove Resort and South Tahoe Standup Paddle rent boards, so out-of-town friends are within easy reach of the marshes of Reagan Beach and Kiva Beach on the west and the picturesque flat waters of Sand Harbor and Skunk Harbor on the east. supsouth-laketahoe.com; zephyrcove.com; southtahoesup.com When my inner adrenaline junky kicks in and I really want to catch a wave but the conditions just aren’t on my side, I make some of my own with a motorized watercraft.
Create a nice wake with a powerboat and, viola, you can enjoy wake surfing! Grab a longboard or wakeboard, along with the perfect boat rental, at Action Watersports of Tahoe or Tahoe Sports. For wakeboarding, wakesurfing, water-skiing and slalom-skiing lessons, Truckee Watersports is the place to go. With expert instructors specializing in summer-season watersports and snow sports in winter, pros including Ryan Swenson can help you get started or up your game. action-watersports.com; tahoesports.com; truckeewatersports.com
HIDDEN GEMS Lesser-known alternatives also exist for stoke seekers from the area and abroad. Reno has a little-known surfing alternative — a wellkept local secret — that is riding the rapids of the Truckee River. The Truckee River Whitewater Park in the Riverwalk District even has a rapid where the water flows backward enabling folks to surf upstream with a shortboard or inflatable board. renoriverwalk.org Oft forgotten but no less fun, wind surfing allows surfers to jet across the surface of Lake Tahoe with a bit of wind on days when the lines just aren’t forming. Though no longer giving lessons, Alvina Patterson holds the title of local legend in the sport. In similar windy conditions, kite surfing will help you get that thrill when the surf isn’t exactly up.
Truckee River Raft, where the guides will take you on the adventure of a lifetime. For a slightly more subdued experience, you can enjoy kayaking. Camp Richardson Resort Rentals will ensure you’re ready to paddle your way to adventure. Finally, if exploring under the surface of the water is more your style, Tahoe Dive Center can get you all set up to SCUBA, where you can explore the underwater parks, including those off the coast of D.L. Bliss, where huge granite boulders sit stacked in the clear, deep water. truckeeriverraft. com; camprichard-son.com; tahoedivecenter.com There are plenty of ways to enjoy the water this summer. If surfing is your thing, you don’t have to miss out just because you’re inland. Whether you’re from a surfing locale, are a local surfer, or just want to try something new, the Reno/Tahoe area offers a ton of waves to carve once the snowpack begins to melt.
OTHER ALTERNATIVES For those who like the idea of surfing but lack the execution, there are also a number of other water-based adventures available in the area, such as rafting. If this is your jam, check out

Replenish Tahoe Boutique in South Lake is the place to go for bath bombs, essential oils, home decor and more. If you’re running low on toiletries, bring your refillable bottles in for a top off from their bulk body bar. Golfing Delight Picture-perfect views, a challenging course and entertainment await at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. By Richard “Dickie” Peraldo
An avid golfer for most of my life, I like golf courses that test my game and mesmerize my mind with outstanding views. Lake Tahoe Golf Course not only achieves this goal, it exceeds expectations. Swinging vistas Approaching the first tee, you’re smacked in the face with 360-degree views. Step up to the tee box with driver in hand and you’ll be staring at Dick’s Peak and Mt. Tallac. This is a sure sign for a spectacular day. Hole six is my favorite hole, not because it was my first birdie the last time I golfed the course, but rather for it’s beauty. The Upper Truckee River flows freely right in front of you on the tee box and then again on the green. Just listening to the river not only calms your nerves, it’ll make your jaw drop. This is a special hole. Many courses have one side or a few holes with great views, but after making the turn to the back nine you’ll realize it’s not the case here. Standing on the tenth tee, after an extraordinary front nine, the lush green fairway meets sky-high snowcapped mountains. The back nine will treat you just right with great golf and even greater views. The heart of the back nine includes even more holes with the Upper Truckee River, not only for your viewing pleasure but also in play! One time, I was on the green reading my putt to save par and two kayakers floated by absolutely immersed in their day. 18 holes and then some As much as I love the views, I also enjoy the challenge this course offers. The front nine are very open with a grip-it-and-rip-it-like-a-youngTiger-Woods feel, minus the 50+ yards of course. The back nine is a little bit more target golf, a risk/ reward vibe. The driver will still make it out of your bag, but there are a few holes an iron off the tee works just fine. With three different tee boxes and water coming into play on 13 holes, this course will be a challenge for any skill level. Lake Tahoe Golf Course is more than just golf and views, its ability to entertain is second to none. From weddings to banquets to bachelor parties (which I witnessed firsthand), this place is about fun. They have an amazing snack bar, a great bar (with their signature drink, the happier gilmore), a snazzy dance floor and an unbelievably friendly staff. They also offer Footgolf in the evenings.

Lake Tahoe Golf Course is a reasonably priced showstopper. The golf is amazing, the views are to die for and they offer entertainment like no other. Sitting here on the patio enjoying the views and a happier gilmore after 18 holes, you’ll agree life doesn’t get any better than this. Book your tee time today at laketahoegc.com!

Whitewater and Wine Raft, relax and imbibe in Northern California’s El Dorado County By Natasha Bourlin
Places exist in the world where you can ski and golf, or snowboard and surf, in the same day. Now, a group of adrenaline junkies and oenophiles have come up with a new kind of wine pairing. Raft California blends whitewater rafting with wine tasting in an area that incited the Gold Rush, providing adventure with delectable bliss. Gold and wine In 1848, James W. Marshall made a discovery heard ‘round the world. He found gold in Coloma, Calif. and soon the area was teeming with hopeful miners looking to strike it rich. Along with a thirst for gold, miners and pioneers also brought a taste
for the alcohol-laden, grape-sourced nectar many had yearned for from their homes back east, or their European homelands. Root stocks were planted and wine soon rivaled mining as the area’s big business. Marshall even started a winery on the site of his gold strike, remnants of which can still be seen at the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. Today, El Dorado County vineyards repurposed largely as pear farms during Prohibition have been revived. Obscure European varietals such as Albarino and Mourvedre are found near luscious Syrahs originally sourced from the Rhone Valley.

Exhilaration meets relaxation In Lotus, Calif., a haven for whitewater rafters and wine-lovers alike has bloomed along the banks of the American River’s South Fork. Raft California welcomes guests to its scenic and removed new campground with a knowledgeable guide who tours you through the property. A rack of wetsuits gives visitors a glimpse into their upcoming experience. Strolling past the rafting equipment, river goers settle into spacious canvas tents boasting comfy cots and porches to gaze over the surroundings. A campfire burns nearby, providing warmth and ambiance in the evenings. Meals are prepared in the outdoor kitchen by the friendly RC team, then eaten riverside in a covered area on picnic tables. Their hearty breakfasts fuel you for the excursions soon embarked upon. Take one of RC’s two-day Wine Tasting & Whitewater Rafting Experiences and explore several of the region’s awardwinning wineries and a brewery, with lunch served in between. In down-toEarth El Dorado County, you meet the
winemakers and get firsthand accounts of what inspires them, along with tours of their vineyards and winemaking facilities nestled amidst picturesque rolling hills. After breakfast the following day, gear up and gather your gumption to head down the great rapids of the American River. No worries, there’s an experienced river guide taking care of you the whole way, but that doesn’t mean you’re not part of the action. You’ll be navigating through class three and four rapids (and some mellower waves, too) with a crew of paddle-bearing others. Adrenaline coursing through your veins from the exhilarating adventure, return to the campground and stay another night, or head out to tell your friends and family all you’ve done. This is just one of RC’s many available excursions. Whether you’re a beginner to rafting or experienced pro, there’s a river with rapids to take your breath away, and a guide to steer you through them all. raftcalifornia.com Photos opposite page: Raft California, @abouttowndeb; Photo this page: @abouttowndeb

For the first 15 years that I lived in Reno, I did not have children. Sure, my wonderful nieces and nephews (there are nine of them) came for visits and several even spent a few years living nearby, but a majority of the time it was my husband and I adulting away in the Biggest Little City. That all changed three years ago when we welcomed our son, Rowan, into the world. Now, we have another little squirt on the way and I can tell you the way we experience all that is Reno/Tahoe has completely changed. We still enjoy date nights and going out with friends, but this area is made for the kiddos. If you happen to have a few from your brood in tow during your visit, there are some great places catering to them where they’re sure to have an absolute blast … I suspect you’ll have a little fun, too.
Tahoe take over Spectacular views and inspired serenity aside, Lake Tahoe is a mecca for amusement. With two shops in South Lake, Shoreline Bike Rentals lets you get around with ease on a variety of pedal-powered contraptions and excursions. For a day indoors, Kidzone Museum is filled with stimulating activities. If it’s the trees you seek, take a gondola ride to the ropes course atop the mountains at Heavenly Lake Tahoe. Or, head to the Squaw Valley Treetop Adventure Park for beginning and intermediate treks accompanying exciting vertical climbing elements. Get way high in the sky with Tahoe Helicopters and HeliTahoe — each provide truly memorable flights above the lake. shorelineoftahoe.com; kidzonemuseum.org; skiheavenly.com; tahoetreetop.com; tahoehelicopters.us; pnh-us.com

Sip Your Way Through Summer
Cool off with some of Tahoe’s top cocktails. By Natasha Bourlin
Summer’s hot sun often ushers a desire for ice-cold cocktails. Mercifully, there’s no shortage of exceptional summertime libations around Lake Tahoe. Sip your way around the lake with these creative drinkable concoctions.
A boozy beacon It’s nearly legendary at this point. The Beacon at Camp Richardson in South Lake is well-known for epic views, summer fun … and their notoriously delicious and potent blended tropical concoction, the rum runner. They even have a cruise named after it which departs from the resort’s marina three times daily each summer, bound for Emerald Bay and boasting a seemingly endless supply of the beverage. Made from a blend of passion fruit, pineapple and orange juices and, well, plenty of rum, you can enjoy more of them at an $8 price point on their Wild Wednesdays or during happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday - Friday. You can even take home a bottle of the tasty mix, just add booze. camprichardson.com
Wily woodies Similar in notoriety, yet across the lake, is another fruity beverage ideal for summertime. A restaurant named for the classic wooden
42 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
boats still spotted like an endangered species on Tahoe, Gar Woods owner Tom Turner brought his cheeky sense of humor to their signature cocktail, the wet woody. It’s made from a blend of 151 rum, light rum, cranberry, pineapple and orange juices, peach schnapps and sweet and sour, then mixed together and frozen in a smoothie machine and topped with a Bacardi Black floater. More than a dozen variations of the wet woody, some with even more playfully risque monikers, now exist, so make a day — or perhaps three — of sampling them all. garwoods.com
Tiki time Get a taste of the tropics in South Lake at the Beach Retreat and Lodge’s Tiki Bar. Lead bartenders Sean McDaniel and Shawn Meyers (aka the Sean and Shawn show) created a concoction called the sneaky tiki, comprised of light rum, orange and pineapple juices, blackberry brandy, banana liqueur and a dark rum floater, garnished with fruit. A bartender of 30 years, McDaniel grew up on Oahu and wanted to bring some Hawaiian flavor to the Tahoe shores. Only open during summer months, the Tiki Bar truly transports you to a tropical island with its thatched roof, bamboo and beachfront cabanas. Just ignore the snow that may still mount the mountains well into the warmest season. tahoebeachretreat.com

Magical potions Everyone loves when a cocktail magically appears before them in summertime, though usually it’s not magic, just an observant server. But at The Loft Theatre-Lounge-Dining, it just might be. Glimpses of the cerulean lake dot the walls of this intimate, literally magical space at the base of Heavenly. Bar manager and mixologist Nick Giordano explains that their cocktail program invokes the world of illusion, each drink crafted around a different element such as smoke, fire, levitation or transformation, providing customers with a befitting and visually stimulating imbibing experience. Take the smoke and mirrors, one of their most popular libations, made from 100-proof bourbon, Sapling Maple liqueur, housemade old fashioned syrup and tobacco bitters, then garnished with Luxardo cherries and candied bacon. A one-of-a-kind concoction, it’s then placed in a glass smoking box with hickory wood chips and infused with smoky goodness. It magically appears before the guest after being completely consumed by smoke in the box, a presentation worthy of its name. thelofttahoe.com
Caribbean-inspired concoction Before opening Round Hill Pines Beach Resort, the team felt they’d entered an alpine Caribbean with its exquisite sunsets, blue waters and pristine, sandy beach. They wanted to create a signature drink that embodied this feeling, and the popular pain killer was born. Complemented by a Caribbean-themed menu, the cocktail is a frozen blend of pineapple, coconut, orange juice and white rum, topped with Mount Gay dark rum and freshly grated nutmeg. Take the daily Happy Hour Serenity Cruise aboard the resort’s 63-foot luxury yacht and score a free pain killer, which somehow tastes even better on the water. roundhillpinesresort.com
Recovery in a glass After a day or evening of summertime cocktail exploration, you may need to dive into yet another to help recover. Headachy and hungry? Head immediately to McP’s Taphouse Grill, where you can find a meal-worthy bloody mary to help heal you. They put an Irish spin on the renowned drink with a corned beef garnish and float of Guinness that adds richness and helps balance the spiciness. Jalapeno pickles, pickled green beans and a lime add some greenery in true Irish fashion. After one, maybe two, you may just be ready for a jig. mcpspub.com Tahoe summers and deliciously chilled cocktails are the perfect recipe for bliss. Temperatures feel idyllic, brisk waters are warmer, days seem longer, the sun even brighter and your cheeks ache from smiling. Somehow, everything is just better lakeside. 44 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

SIZZLING SUMMER Local meat master shares summer barbecuing tips. By Natasha Bourlin
48 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
When his parents opened South Lake Tahoe’s Overland Meat and Seafood Company in 1987, current owner Brian Cohen never imagined he’d be taking over the business 18 years later. As most tend to do, his parents wanted to retire and Cohen saw an entrepreneurial opportunity. Come 2005, Cohen left his job at a grocery store to carry on the butchering legacy. He kept the business afloat despite extraordinarily hard times including tragic fires and recessions. He turned it into a thriving go-to spot for Tahoe residents seeking quality meats, seafoods and more. “We specialize in filling a void that grocery stores here have left and offering items not found anywhere else,” Cohen says. “Offering the best quality and fresh items is what we strive for. You get what you pay for. You can buy cheaper products, but you can’t buy better.” Meeting customer demands for quality over quantity is a daily duty for Cohen and his team. The full-service meat market carries a consistent selection of meats with no hormones, antibiotics or animal by-products, plus fresh seafood, organic, free-range poultry and many other complementary products. For the past 11 years, they’ve overnighted fresh fish from Hawaii, bringing a weekly dose of the Pacific Ocean to Tahoe. Now, nearly every Friday when the seafood is sold, lines of fish-fancying customers eagerly await the aquatic Hawaiian harvest. They also offer fresh wild cod on Tuesdays and Fridays, plus popular, housemade poke bowls.
GET GRILLING With barbecue season in full swing, take some tips from a meat master. Cohen says it’s crucial to let steaks warm up to room temperature before cooking, so place them on the counter for oneto-two hours before they hit the grill. One of the most important guidelines for any grill chef is to only flip your meat, poultry or fish once. Every time you flip it, juices are expelled. Then, test the temperature with a meat thermometer, but never cut into it to check if it’s done —you’ll just let all those precious juices out. Instead, let it rest after taking it off the grill for about 20 minutes to let the juices set up within the meat properly, creating mouthwatering results. As for spices, a high-grade piece of meat should be tasted in its full glory, so he recommends only a sprinkling of salt and pepper prior to cooking. Should you want a bit more flavor, Overland Meat and Seafood Company is stocked with tried and true seasonings that work well with the items they sell. Find out more at overlandmeatco.com.

Where to find the best cheese in the Sierra. By Troy Matthews, Elevation Eats
S
cientists say cheese is an addicting substance. At Elevation Eats, we don’t condone drug use, so cheese may be our next best bet. The beauty of cheese is its simplicity while remaining enormously complex in texture and flavor.
There are literally hundreds of types of cheese that all share the same basic recipe and whether it’s cow, goat, buffalo, sheep, or even combinations thereof, there are plenty of cheese experts around here offering the good stuff.
The best of Sierra Charcuterie
Great restaurants know a simple plate of fine cheese and cured meats, known as charcuterie, is an easy and excellent first round to a top-notch meal.

There’s No Place Like Home — Summer Edition By Heidi Bethel
N
ot to bring it up this late in the game, but did this winter just seem to go on and on? While my family and I braved the snow-filled season in a travel trailer parked in Kansas, we watched from afar as the flurries continued to pack the Sierra with the good stuff. Sure our water pipes froze up a few times despite my husband’s very committed attempt to skirt and insulate our home on wheels, but the snow that fell upon us was nothing compared to the five-feet-in-one-day accumulation in Lake Tahoe. Wow! And with that amazing snowfall comes a whole lot of summertime fun. In late June, we’re headed back from Fort Leavenworth where the hubs earned his masters degree at the Army Command and General Staff College. And, I should mention I’ll have just entered the third trimester with our new baby boy. I’m extremely excited to join you, awesome visitor, because we both get to enjoy some amazing activities and food in the place we call home. Here are just a few things I can’t wait to get back to this season. Awakened summertime energy There’s nothing quite like hiking along a bubbling creek streaming freshly melted snow in absolute sunshine. The renewed action as everything continues to thaw from the winter chill is a sight to see. Taking long walks and
exploring nature are among our favorite things to do as a family and especially with our four-legged friends. We suffered two sad losses this year as our fur babies went to the rainbow bridge, but we adopted another loving pup from a rescue shelter and named her Tonganoxie (Noxie for short) after the county road we lived on in Kansas. Noxie will surely love the amazing treks the mountains of Reno/Tahoe have to offer — especially Whites Creek Trail and Steamboat Ditch Trail. galenacreekvisitorcenter.org Sierra tastes Did you know Reno is the self-proclaimed all-you-can-eat sushi capitol of the world? HONEY FOR THE LOVE OF
Satisfy your sweet tooth in Reno/Tahoe. By Rae Matthews, Elevation Eats

oney might be one of the most fascinating food substances in the natural world. It has likely been a part of the human diet since before we were technically human. There are ancient cave paintings that depict people foraging for honey. It is, of all things, an insect biproduct that is ready to eat without any heat or processing, and it never spoils if sealed properly, even after thousands of years. Honey can also contain beneficial antioxidants, has antimicrobial properties, and makes a great alternative to sugar, even in baking.
Bee natural Honey is made when bees visit flowers and bring the nectar back to their hive. It takes a visit to two million flowers to make one pound of honey. Purchasing honey direct from local farmers supports these active pollinators as they help our agriculture. Halleluyah Honey in Carson City not only distributes honey throughout the region but also sells beeswax and beekeeping kits. You can also try creamed honey or honey right out of the comb. In addition to cattle, lamb and horses, Murry Ranch in Reno keeps bees and sells their raw honey. Just north of Reno is Misbeehaven Farm in Sun Valley. They 64 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

make several types of flavor-infused honeys including garlic or ghost pepper. Holly Family Farms in Dayton is a full-fledged, multi-generational, fully organic farm offering everything from poultry to produce, and, yes, honey! Their bee colonies roam freely throughout the farm, helping to propagate their crops, and their honey is available by appointment. Al Bees Sierra Nevada Honey maintains an impressive 120 hives throughout the Reno/ Carson Valley area, all on pesticide-free properties, and their raw honey is widely distributed. halleluyahhoney.com; murryranch.com; misbeehavenfarm.com; holleyfamilyfarms. com; sierranevadahoney.com
Bee diverse Shopping for honey can be like shopping for wine. Honey has a “terroir,” as the color and flavor is a direct result of the flowers that the bees visit. There are light honeys, dark honeys, fruity honeys, and strong honeys. Orange blossom honey, for example, comes from bees whose territory is dominated by orange trees, and so the honey has a sweet citrus flavor. Buckwheat honey, on the other hand, is a dark amber and has a rich malty flavor. Most honeys are a mixture as bees tend to travel quite a distance in search of nectar, but beekeepers can influence their surroundings and come up with a certain “varietals.” Honey can also be raw or pasteurized. Most honey you see on the grocery store shelves is pasteurized. Raw honey is basically straight out of the hive, and because of honey’s anti-microbial properties, raw honey is generally safe to eat as long as it’s handled properly. It is often pasteurized to kill off any wayward yeasts that may eventually cause fermentation and to slow down the granulation process. Proponents of raw honey argue that pasteurization kills the beneficial microns as well. Really, it’s just a matter of preference. When shopping for honey, be on the lookout for color, location of origin, raw versus processed, and any stated varietal flavors. Smaller grocers specializing in local fair are excellent places to find new types of honey, as are local farmers markets. Village Market in Incline Village is a great spot to buy local on the North Shore. Grass Roots in South Lake Tahoe and Minden Meat and Deli in Carson Valley both sell HalleluYah Honey. Tahoe Oil & Spice in Truckee sells such delectable honey varietals as pomegranate or sweet clover. New Moon Natural Foods in Tahoe City and Truckee are proud supporters of local farms through the Tahoe Food Hub. And you can find Al Bees Sierra Nevada Honey at Great Basin Food Coop in Reno, as well as Mountain High Sandwich Company in Incline Village. villagemarketincline.com; grassrootstahoe.com; mindenmeat.com; tahoeoilandspice. com; newmoonnaturalfoods.com; greatbasinfood.coo;, mountainhighsandwichco.com We locals know how sweet it is to “bee” in Reno/Tahoe, but now you can taste it too!
