If you’re lucky enough to visit Lake Tahoe, then you are blessed with the chance to see some of the most gorgeous sunsets. From Bonzai Rock to Emerald Bay, catch your vibrant Tahoe sunset today!
Living in Tahoe has led to Cara Delvecchio’s endless spontaneous adventures with her dog, Diego, and many breathtaking photos with her Nikon D5200. As Cara says “The wild places are always calling.” She’s constantly in search of a unique view of this beautiful world offering a truly wild perspective. wildperspectivesphotography.com Born and raised in Tahoe and having just opened the new Emanate Gallery, Benjamin Justin has an eye for photography. When it comes to sunsets he loves to give that raw experience to his photos allowing you to step right into the image and enjoy the exact moment when he was there by limiting his use of contrast and saturation. emanategallery.com

NEVADA MUSEUM of ART By Amanda Horn
See our beloved region through the eyes of artists who loved this place.
Now, for the first time ever, a comprehensive survey of this creative but under-appreciated artist’s work is on view for all to enjoy. Hans Meyer-Kassel: Artist of Nevada features more than 70 paintings. Additional drawings, photographs, ephemera and artifacts drawn from private and institutional collections round out the exhibition. Commemorate your visit by picking up a copy of the 204-page book that accompanies this historic display, or a specially produced box set of notecards featuring some of the most beautiful works from the show. After spending time among the paintings, experience the true depth of Meyer-Kassel’s legacy by driving through the Carson Valley and around Tahoe to soak in the views that stirred the artist’s brush. Visit the Genoa Courthouse Museum to see additional work by this beloved artist, as well as a monument to him and his wife that was erected there this past May. Anne W. Brigman: A Visionary in Modern Photography September 29, 2018 through January 27, 2019.
Reno/Tahoe boasts an abundance of beauty. From the pastures of the Carson Valley to the forested shores surrounding Lake Tahoe, natural glory draws thousands of visitors each season. This summer and fall, the Nevada Museum of Art, Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Visual Arts, E. L. Wiegand Gallery offers an opportunity to witness the deep impact our region has long had on artists. Hans Meyer-Kassel: Artist of Nevada. On view through September 2. German-born artist Hans Meyer-Kassel (1872-1952) aimed to capture the scenic beauty of northern Nevada through his impressionistic paintings. Classically trained as a painter at the University of Munich, Meyer-Kassel immigrated to the United States at the end of World War I to escape the post-war tumult. He endured the Great Depression in New York City, but after having exhibited his work in Pasadena, Calif. in 1935, he became enamored with the American West. Within a year, he and his wife, Maria, moved to Reno, later relocating to Carson City, eventually settling in Genoa, where he worked from his small studio at the base of the Carson Range. Meyer-Kassel loved Nevada from the time of his first visit, and over two decades he built his reputation as one of the most prolific and successful artists in the region. 16 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
A visionary in modern photography, Anne W. Brigman (18691950) is among the most important of all American women photographers. An autodidact and enlightened intellectual, she is considered a pioneer in the field of twentieth-century modern landscape photography. Recognized for her fiercely independent modernist spirit, she is one of the first-ever female photographers to make self portraits of her own body. Associated with Alfred Stieglitz and the Photo-Secession, Brigman achieved success in New York and California most notably for her provocative images made outdoors in the landscape — many in Desolation Wilderness and other parts of the Sierra, but also for her contributions to the field of early modern poetry. The Nevada Museum of Art will organize the first major retrospective exhibition of this pioneering artist, more than 300 works in all, and publish the first book to comprehensively chronicle the images she produced during her lifetime. In the late 1800s, the Nevada-CaliforniaOregon railway began construction of a track that would move passengers, parcels, livestock and supplies along the West Coast. Some historians believe this helped put Reno on the map and it didn’t take long to see the transformation it had on the Biggest Little City. Throughout it’s time, the depot here has seen its fare share of dramatic evolution including a rebuild following fire in 1889. Today, you may enjoy a great brew and tasty bite at The Depot Craft Brewery Distillery. thedepotreno.com Fast forward about a century to the controversial ReTRAC project where two miles of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks running through downtown Reno were successfully lowered into trenches — freeing up the congestion on major streets where even ambulances would have and gold deposits found in Virginia City to the masses. In its prime the railway saw 30-to-45 trains operating daily, but by the turn of the century and with a severe mining decline it became a steady passenger transport service. Now folks can ride full steam ahead on various themed rides including a wine train, scenic mills and mines tours, and more. vtrailway.com
to wait for passing locomotives. During the hefty renovation that left the Reno Southern Pacific Railroad Depot on the National Register of Historic Places, many significant artifacts were uncovered including an unknown basement at a masonic lodge and old pedestrian tunnel no longer used. Visit the depot to view the famous 1980 WCTU water fountain, an old cistern used by the fire department, Native American works of art, and several bottles dating as far back as the 1860s. While you’re there, take Amtrak’s California Zephyr to Truckee and back — this is a great way to experience a little more of the area without the rental car! amtrak.com
In downtown Reno, at Idlewild Park not only will you find a great spot with miles of walking trails, the rushing Truckee River, a rose garden and tons of playthings for the kiddos, you’ll also spot a fun train ride perfect for the littles and their people. reno.gov If you’re looking for even more railway history, visit the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. Here you can see the actual Virginia and Truckee Railroad #27, which was the last new locomotive purchased by the V&T Railroad. And peruse the scale model exhibit with many miniature replicas of the trains of yesteryear. nvculture.org Hop aboard Reno/Tahoe’s booming train history scene and tell the conductor that Getaway sent you!

CREATIVE ADVENTURES
WATER WONDERS Did you know Lake Tahoe water is 99.994% pure? That’s comparable to bottled water! With water this pure, you’ll want to try the newest water adventure —crystal clear kayaking with Wild Society. Take in the 360-degree picturesque views around you, above you and, now, below you! Their built-in wireless waterproof speakers allow you to cruise to your own tunes. Book a guided tour to visit secret beaches and coves that only the locals know about, with a fun catered picnic to finish. wildsocietylt.com
If you love the idea of paint and sip, then you’re going to absolutely adore these new creative studios. Tapping into my creative self can be a challenge sometimes, but I’m hooked after taking a class at Tahoe Modern Makers. This interactive storefront and creative space has fun classes like macrame, succulent planting, pottery painting, nail art and so much more. Have something you want to make on your own? Walk-ins are always welcome. Over in Reno, Board & Brush is turning clients into DIY masters, as guests are shown how to use power tools and hammers while designing decorative wood signs. tahoemodernmakers.com; boardandbrush.com
TAPPING IN Self-serve beer and wine? Yes, please! Try tapping into these sip-a-licious businesses when exploring Reno/Tahoe. First on my list is Tahoe Pourhouse. Located inside the Crossing at Tahoe Valley, it’s the newest on the line-up and is creating a fun, do-it-yourself buzz — just like their friendly beer neighbors, Lake Tahoe AleWorX. Expect to nosh on some finer bites and specialty small plates, such as their custom charcuterie boards, then cleanse your palete with your own self-served wine tasting array. On the beer side of things, Lake Tahoe AleWorX is expanding and opened its second taproom near the bustling casino corridor at Stateline. You’ll love the same great ambiance, beer tap wall and wood-fired pizza, and the newest enjoyment … a full bar flaring up craft cocktails and whiskey. When in Reno, The Brewer’s Cabinet Taproom a.k.a the BC Taproom, is a great new joint and is an extension of its sister restaurant next door. (Note: the brewery is so popular that the owner opened this taproom to keep their customers happy!) Try one of 20 taps with special release and one-offs. Now go tap that! tahoepourhouse.com; laketahoealeworx.com; brewerscabinet.com

MEET ME AT WEST STREET Reno is in the middle of a renaissance for the creative entrepreneur and the West Street Market is its most recent gem. This up-andcoming shared space is positioning itself to be the newest community hub rich in cultural vibes, delish conscious-focused restaurants, and will soon establish itself as an event space to host live music and performances. For the foodie goer, Thali is an all-organic Indian restaurant featuring a special spread of the day prepped that morning. Bring your Indian bites next door to West Street Wine Bar to sip eclectic worldly wines that you will have a hard time finding anywhere else. Nosh on some slices at The Pizza Collective made from organic cheeses and local farm fresh produce. SCENIC SWINGS THE BEAUTY OF LAKE TAHOE GOLF COURSE
A
s an avid golfer, there are a few things on my must-have list when it comes to the ideal course: Friendly staff, views galore and a challenging but enjoyable game. The moment I walked into the clubhouse at Lake Tahoe Golf Course I knew my round would be amazing no matter my final score.
Greeted by Kevin Sommerfeld, general
manager at Lake Tahoe Golf Course, we first strolled the grounds as he told me about all the great things happening around the course. We talked about the spectacular 18 holes, great views and the events they host. From bachelor parties (which I saw first hand) to weddings and banquets, this course hosts amazing events complete with a snazzy dance floor! Nothing says fun like a great location with spectacular views. Speaking of those sights, let’s talk about some of the best panoramas you’ll find on any golf course around. Walk out to the first tee for an inspired 360-degree scene — the only reason you’ll remember you’re playing golf and not
sightseeing is the driver in your hand. Straight ahead off the tee, you’ll see Dick’s Peak and Mount Tallac. Okay, time to focus and hit that opening tee shot. The landscape only continues to impress. About the time you drive up to hole six your jaw will drop while looking at the stunning Upper Truckee River. Nothing will beat trying to knock down that 10-foot birdie putt with the mesmerizing view of the river right in front of you. I hope you knock it in with ease! Making the turn onto the back nine, you may find many shots hard to hit as you stare at the river flowing by sky-high snow-capped mountains. You might even spot a kayaker, or two. When it comes to a challenging but enjoyable course, this is the place. The front nine is open — you can grip it and rip it like John Daly. The back nine brings target golf into play. Sure, you can still grip and rip, but the risk/ reward game becomes part of your thought process along with those views. This course is setup for everyone to play with multiple tee boxes so it won’t matter if you’re a single digit

handicapper or a first-time player, you’ll enjoy this course. To add even more entertainment, they have footgolf after 5 p.m. Nothing says family fun or an exciting date night like a round of footgolf. Lake Tahoe Golf Course is a reasonably priced showstopper. DIVE IN Scuba and cliff jump in the Sierra! By Jen Peng
Looking to add some excitement to your water adventures in the Sierra? Here are two different ways to play in the water this summer. SCUBA DIVING Few people think of scuba diving when they think of Lake Tahoe, but the pristine waters offer excellent visibility (up to 100 feet!) — all the better to see the fascinating rock formations, vertical cliffs and sunken forests, as well as the crawfish, schools of minnows and trout that typify the diving here. Sand Harbor is Tahoe’s most popular dive site. Diver’s Cove, a dedicated divers area, is great for beginners and a popular spot for classes. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of room for divers of all abilities. With average bottom depth of 30 feet, expect to see big boulders and crawfish. More experienced divers should swim 300 feet past the buoys to see vertical cliffs and sunken trees. Be careful of boat traffic when surfacing. Note that Nevada law requires all divers to tow a dive flag. There is a $10/$12 entrance fee. Rubicon Point is famed for Rubicon Wall, a spectacular wall dive along a sheer cliff dropping down 1,000 feet. Located south of Calawee Beach, it’s accessible after a 400-feet surface swim, or by boat and kayak. Strong buoyancy control is required for this dive, known for great visibility, beautiful topography and schools of fingerling trout. Less advanced divers should stay in the shallower area leading up to the wall. Located in D.L. Bliss State Park, just north of Emerald Bay, there is a $10 entrance fee. From the small parking lot, there is a steep trail to the beach.

There are over a dozen sites in the area that you can dive, featuring deep dives, night dives and even wreck dives. Be aware of the cold water and high altitude. It’s best to go with a local guide or take a high altitude diver course. In Carson City, equipment, guides and classes are available from Tahoe Dive Center. In Reno, try Adventure Scuba Center or Sierra Diving Center. tahoedivecenter.com; renoscuba.com; sierradive.com The exhilarating experience of diving at 6,225 feet in the clear deep waters of Lake Tahoe is one you will not soon forget! CLIFF JUMPING Feeling daring and want to get an adrenaline rush even before you hit the cold water? Try jumping off a cliff, or at least some large boulders. Sand Harbor is famous for its sandy beaches, as well as an abundance of large granite boulders. Take the plunge, then warm up afterward on a boulder or on one of the multiple beaches. Extensive amenities, including a restaurant, bathrooms and watersport rentals, make this one of the most popular beaches in the area. It’s great for families, but expect a lot of people, especially on busy summer weekends. Bonsai Rock got its name from the small trees, which are not actually bonsai, growing out of the top of the square

granite boulder. Check out the resilience of these trees, then take a leap into the blue. Bonsai Rock is about a mile south of Sand Harbor. From the pullouts, you’ll see steep, but short, footpaths heading down. You can also kayak or standup paddleboard over. Looking to huck off something bigger than a boulder? Angora Lakes will be your best bet, with rocks and cliffs from a few feet up to 60 feet. A great place to take the whole family, there’s also a sandy beach with shallow water for swimming, plus you can rent boats, kayaks and standup paddleboards from Angora Lakes Resort. Don’t forget to try some of their fresh squeezed lemonade. Angora Lakes is just south of Fallen Leaf Lake. It costs $7 to park, and it’s a 1-mile hike in. The cliffs are at the far end of the upper lake, use the trail to the left. Water shoes help with the climb back up from the water. angoralakesresort.com Cliff jumping is dangerous. Always check for submerged obstacles and water depths before you jump. Also be mindful of the cold water of alpine lakes. Whether you prefer the heights of cliff jumping or the depths of scuba diving, get your blood pumping and experience the lake in a whole new way this summer!

Explore California and Nevada’s state parks this summer By Annie Flanzraich
When summer comes to the Reno/Tahoe area, my favorite activities happen outside. Hiking, camping, swimming, exploring, adventuring and lounging are best experienced with sunshine, fresh air, friends and a hefty dose of SPF. State parks can be an epicenter for all of the above, and luckily more than 20 parks are a 45-minute drive or less from Reno. Here are my favorite seven to visit. Photos this page: Vikingsholm (California State Parks) Spooner Lake (California State Parks)
38 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
EMERALD BAY STATE PARK With its iconic and highly photographed lookout point, Emerald Bay State Park is probably the first place that comes to mind when people hear the words “Lake Tahoe.” During the summer, expect to see crowds of people ready to hike and explore the park located on Lake Tahoe’s west shore. While taking a selfie on the scenic overlook on Highway 89 is one way to experience Emerald Bay, try hiking a few miles down to Vikingsholm, a replica of a Scandinavian castle. Tours of the castle take place every 30 minutes and cost $10 for adults. If you’ve already visited Vikingsholm, expand your exploration to The Underwater Park, located on the north shore of Emerald Bay. There, divers can see boats, launches, barges and a variety of artifacts from Emerald Bay Resort that are now submerged. sierrastateparks.org/emerald-bay-state-park D.L . BLISS STATE PARK Just a few miles north of Emerald Bay is D.L. Bliss State Park, a 1,830-acre mountain wonderland. For an unparalleled view of Lake Tahoe, hike to the north end of the park to find Rubicon Point, where you can see more than 100 feet into the depths of the lake. For more dramatic views, take a day to explore the Rubicon Trail, which stretches from Lester Beach at D.L. Bliss State Park to Eagle Point Campground at Emerald Bay State Park. In the northwest section of the park, you can find a short, half-mile self-guided nature trail that will take you to the Balancing Rock. This 130-ton block of granite rests precariously on a narrow stone base and has been a favorite photography spot since the late 1800s. sierrastateparks.org/d-l-bliss-state-park ED Z’BERG SUGAR PINE POINT STATE PARK Also located on the West Shore, Ed Z’Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park is another local
favorite — but just call it Sugar Pine for short. The park includes a historic estate, the tallest pine trees in the world and great hiking trails. The park's nearly two miles of lakefront feature dense forests of pine, fir, aspen and juniper. During the summer, you can find a variety of interpretive activities including campfire programs, nature hikes and junior ranger programs. Don’t miss taking a tour of the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion, a beautiful summer home built in 1903, or visiting the Nature Center to view several exhibits about Lake Tahoe's bird life biology, lake ecology, wildflowers and trees. sierrastateparks.org/sugar-pine-point-state-parkehrman-mansion/ SAND HARBOR On Lake Tahoe’s north shore, about 20 minutes from Incline Village, sits Sand Harbor’s crystalclear waters and unusual rock formations. At this state park, you’ll find smooth, sandy beaches, boat launches, picnic sites and the stage of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. It’s easy to find many ways to spend the day at Sand Harbor, whether you’re swimming, kayaking, scuba diving, boating, picnicking or beaching. parks.nv.gov/parks/lake-tahoe-nevada-state-park SPOONER LAKE & BACK COUNTRY As you drive up to Lake Tahoe from Carson City on Highway 50, you’ll see Spooner Lake and part of the Spooner Backcountry, a more-than-12,000-acre area of forested, open space. This park features 50 miles of hiking, equestrian and mountain biking trails and primitive roads. Some of the most popular trails are the Marlette, Red House, Flume and Tahoe Rim Trails. Spooner Lake is also a great place to make camp and extend your exploration. Camping is allowed in three primitive, walk-in campgrounds: Marlette Peak, Hobart and North

There's also hunting and fishing at Spooner Lake, Marlette Lake and Hobart Reservoir. parks.nv.gov/parks/lake-tahoe-nevada-statepark-1 MORMON STATION Take a step back in time and visit Mormon Station, located in the historic town of Genoa, about 25 minutes south of Carson City. This state park is the site of Nevada’s first permanent, non-native settlement. Today, the park is home to a reconstructed version of the original 1851 trading post that burned down in 1910 and a museum with original pioneer-era artifacts. It’s also the place to attend Genoa’s popular annual events, such as the Candy Dance and Cowboy Festival. parks.nv.gov/parks/mormon-station WASHOE LAKE STATE PARK Feel the majesty of the scenic valley between Reno and Carson City at Washoe Lake State Park. There, you’ll find stunning views of the Nevada, Carson and Virginia mountain ranges, punctuated by soaring bald eagles. This is a favorite area for hiking, camping, picnicking, water sports and equestrian activities. You can also find a diverse range of birds and waterfowl, such as American white pelicans and Canadian geese. Those who like to fish can catch channel and bullhead catfish, wipers, white bass and Sacramento perch. parks.nv.gov/parks/washoe-lake With a variety of settings and activities, the state parks in northern Nevada and California are some of the best places to experience summer. So, get out there and explore. Photos this page: Sand Harbor, Truckee River Raft; Photos opposite page: Wild Island Adventure Park, Truckee River (Jeramie Lu)

Head to Sand Harbor on the east shore, Moon Dunes or King’s Beach on the north shore, Zephyr Cove or Camp Richardson on the south shore, and on the west side, hit D.L. Bliss State Park, or catch concerts and movie nights at Commons Beach from the water. Nearby, Donner Lake has many ways into its cool alpine waters for a refreshing float. Grab your trendy, fun-shaped inflatable and head in via public boat docks on the lake’s north side, the West End Beach, or Donner Memorial State Park and Museum. parks.ca.gov ISLAND OASIS In Sparks, grab a tube or simply sink yourself in the refreshing waters of the quarter-mile Bahama Mama River at Wild Island Family Adventure Park. Dogs are also invited, and guests are welcome to bring snacks, lunch and beverages in raft- and earth-friendly, non-breakable containers. After the approximately three-hour journey, rafters exit at the River Ranch Lodge & Restaurant, where they can share their experience over libations and dinner. truckeeriverraft.com; riverranchlodge.com Reno-based Sierra Adventures tackles the Truckee River in two other ways: by tube or kayak. Get picked up at any local hotel and whisked upriver by shuttle where you can then float to the downtown whitewater park by tube, and even take on the park’s rapids a few times. Kayaks are rented, and clinics are offered to teach beginners how to navigate the river in the hard-sided vessels with paddles. They also offer standup paddleboard lessons or rentals in Tahoe. wildsierra.com WARMER WATERS Among many other things, quaint Genoa boasts spectacular Sierra views, some of the region’s most deeply rooted history, and a resort where you can float your days away in one of several hot spring mineral pools. 1862 David Walley’s Resort Hot Springs and Spa features lodging, spa services, a restaurant and multiple riparian pools. Purported to have therapeutic effects thanks to the naturally occurring minerals in the pools, they also provide buoyancy for easy floating. davidwalleys-resort.com. CILANTRO AND LIME, PLEASE If you’re in the mood for some delicious classic tacos, then you’ve come to the right place! In South Lake Tahoe, Verde Mexican Rotisserie has the street taco on fleek (which means extremely good, attractive or stylish to the young millennial). Definitely try a few with house-rotisseried chicken and tri tip. Sombreros Mexican Restaurant also serves authentic south-of-the-border tastes that you just can’t miss. verdemexicanrotisserie.com; sombrerostahoe.com Reno is dotted with taco-laden delight. They have a pickled veggies and salsa bar that is amazing. miguelsmexicanrestaurantreno.com; robertostacoshop.com In Carson City, swing by The Lady Tamales for a heaping plate of street tacos with all the fixings. A savory taste of Southern barbecue in the Sierra By Rae Matthews, Elevation Eats
Southern barbecue has a long and proud tradition. There are several styles of Southern barbecue, each named for their region of origin, that garner as much loyalty and rivalry as professional baseball teams. You may want to avoid putting a Carolina sauce on a brisket in Texas, for example. But thankfully, food traditions migrate. Here in the Sierra, you can sample all the Southern flavors right at your fingertips (or, should we say on your fingertips?).

WHATEVER-STYLE Being out West, we have the opportunity to completely break from tradition and go with whatever just tastes good. There are several great spots to try all-of-the-above-Southern style, such as: Summit Smokehouse at Northstar, Carson City Barbecue Co. in, um, Carson City, Fox and Hound Smokehouse Grill & Bar in South Lake Tahoe, The Original Hellfire Saloon in Reno, and BJ's Nevada Barbecue Company in Sparks. northstarcalifornia.com; carsoncitybarbecue.com; foxandhoundtahoe.com; hellfiresaloon.com; bjsbbq.com
You can even have cook-it-yourself style at Pignic Pub and Patio in Reno. renoriver.org/pignic-pub-patio
CAROLINA-STYLE Carolina-style barbecue may possibly be the oldest form of American barbecue. There is, of course, a North Carolina- and South Carolina-style. North Carolina-style is characterized by a vinegar-based sauce that is slathered on the entire pig as it smokes. South Carolina-style often features a Carolina Gold sauce, which is a mixture of mustard and vinegar. To get a taste of Carolina-style barbecue here in Reno/Tahoe try Carolina Kitchen and Barbecue Co. in Sparks, where you can get your “Que by the Pound,” or check out Sonney’s BBQ Shack in South Lake Tahoe, where they have a classic Carolina mustard sauce. carolinakitchenbarbecue.com; sonneysbarbecueshack.com ST. LOUIS-STYLE St. Louis-style specializes in spare ribs that are heavily sauced. ALL ABOUT
RUM By Britton Griffith
Reno/Tahoe is the perfect place to have a fun, sunny and celebratory summer vacation! Sometimes you want to add a little spice, a little sugar and of course a splash of rum to your stay. This area has more than just tiki torches, water views and nonstop sunshine. Make each rum drink in your hand a little more delicious with some have-to-stop shops and bars. Lakeside rum running Oh, that feeling you get while lying on a sandy beach without a care in the world. Feel like you’ve been swept to a tropical paradise at Camp Richardson in South Lake Tahoe with a classic cold and slushy rum runner. This tasty concoction has been voted “Tahoe's Best Drink” a zillion times over. The frosty, yummy, sippy drink is made up of fruit juices, nectars, and comes with spiced rum, white rum and a float of dark rum. You can love this drink as a smoothie, on the rocks, or even as an ice cream topping! camprichardson.com After indulging in Camp Richardson’s delicious warm comfort food and cool sips, you can take your full stomach and happy mood to sit with your family and friends around a campfire planning the next day’s adventure. Cozy up in your bedroom, then wake up refreshed to the beautiful views of Lake Tahoe and all the excitement it has to offer. Sign up for hiking, book a wave runner or cruise in the Marina and most definitely checkout the rum runner cruise. (TRY TO GO!) The only thing in Tahoe that would rival the rum runner is served at the Riva Grill; it’s the worldrenowned wet woody, best served in a pitcher, with friends and on their Wet Woody Wednesdays. The Riva Grill has beautiful bites and even more
gorgeous views. While enjoying the warmth of the sunshine on the patio, you can relish in small dishes, salads, burgers, pastas, seafood and even pizza. Before you leave, trade your wet woody for an Irish coffee and the views of a sunset right on the Lake Tahoe shores. rivagrill.com

When you walk into Death and Taxes in Midtown, let the dark lighting, relaxed atmosphere and chic feel put you into a trance. The talented bartenders combine classic style with a modern twist to deliver creative craft cocktails. Start your evening out right or come here for your nightcap and be sure to order the roots to branches. This drink mixes jasmineinfused rum, novo fogo cachaça, strawberry cordial, yuzu, lime and egg white. It will not disappoint and will only leave you ready for a second creamy rum-filled concoction. deathandtaxesreno.com

My favorite is to head over after work to meet friends and sip on drink that will transport you to your own personal island paradise, an iced drink with Demerara rum, caperlletti, lime, pineapple and angostura bitters. You will enter in your business attire and leave feeling like you are suntanned in a bathing suit. blinddogtavern.com Take a stroll just up the street from Blind Dog Tavern to Pignic Pub and Patio where you can sip on chilly rum concoctions at the bar inside and grill your own favorite meats and vegetables on the patio. Personally, I’m a big fan of farmers markets, so I would submit that a tomato from a local farmers market is far superior to one purchased at a conventional grocery store. Sure, grocery stores provide reliable convenience, but at a farmers market the humble tomato becomes so much more. Shopping at these stands means supporting local economies. If you are a visitor to the Reno/Tahoe region this means an upgrade from a tourist (one who observes a region) to a traveler (one who participates in a region). So why shop at farmers markets? The produce is fresh off the farm. That tomato wasn’t picked while still grossly under ripe in order to survive the bumpy journey across multiple state lines while buried under tons of other grossly under ripe tomatoes. Chances are that tomato was picked in the wee hours of the morning just before the market, while still covered in dew. Plus you will be face to face with the grower. You can ask!

Ah … summer. The bees are buzzing, the flowers are blooming, and the tomatoes are ripe and juicy. A truly fresh tomato may be the very flavor of summer. But is a tomato a tomato no matter where you buy it?
Where to find your Reno/Tahoe farmers’ markets this summer:
And finally there is a positive environmental impact. Most farmers who sell small also sell organic. By purchasing directly from a small farm your tomato represents organic over pesticides and a shorter drive over dreadful longdistance, gas-guzzling shipping. There are some excellent single-day events that capture great local flavor here in the Sierra, such as the Sierra NV Lavender and Honey Festival in Sparks, on June 24 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. This is a sensory delight in all things honey and lavender. The festival offers cooking and growing demonstrations, arts and crafts, and kiddie train rides. There’s even rumor of a lavender and honey flavored beer. lavenderandhoneyfest.com Sample the Sierra in South Lake Tahoe, on September 15 from noon to 5 p.m., is a farm-to-fork culinary experience. Dozens of tastings are provided by local wineries, breweries and restaurants. While you’re there, be sure to catch the Sierra Chef Challenge, where restaurateurs whip up their very best and compete for top bragging rights. You can also schedule the ultimate farmers market experience, a farm tour. samplethesierra.com While a real juicy, ripe tomato may be reason enough to venture out to a farmers market this summer, be sure to keep an eye out for other items like fresh flowers, homemade jerky, artisanal olive oil, fresh baked bread, and fun activities for the whole family. Because farmers markets are about more than just fruits and veggies, they are about community (and tomatoes).
F A R M
Farmers markets offer more variety than run-of-the-mill grocery stores, which stock based on predictable best sellers. Here, you’ll likely be able to find something new and different. Instead of that ol’ boring tomato, try a tomatillo on your burger or a kumquat in your salad (but still get your tomatoes).
T O
Speaking of ripe, local farms mean that fruit and veggies come with the season. That tomato will be grown and picked at the height of tomato season. And isn’t a truly ripe tomato so much better than a pale, tasteless shell of a fruit?

MEAT MATTERS By Rae Matthews, Elevations Eats
What’s a summer without a grill, and what’s a grill without a flame-licked steak or sausage? In South Lake Tahoe, we are fortunate to have among us one of those rare specimens, the traditional butcher shop. Overland Meat & Seafood Co. has been family owned for over 30 years, and, while you could fetch a filet at any grocery store, at Overland you get the full hometown experience. overlandmeatco.com A family business Overland is owned and operated by Brian Cohen, who grew up helping his parents from behind the counter of their butcher shop as early as age seven. In November of 1987, just as Cohen was graduating from high school, his parents moved to South Lake Tahoe and bought the struggling butcher shop that once occupied the premises. They renamed it and turned it into a thriving business. Cohen took over in 2005, and he has been serving the South Lake Tahoe community ever since. Keeping the bar high “We are definitely a hands-on butcher shop, meaning we do a lot of homemade items here that you’re not going to find in the grocery stores,” says Cohen. They feature beef, pork, chicken and turkey that are grass fed, grass or grain finished, humanely raised, and hormone and antibiotic free. They also grind their meat daily and make homemade sausage, jerky and marinated items right in house. And, they offer only wild caught seafood that is shipped direct from Hawaii twice a week. They’ve recently added products to their selection from right down the hill, with
customers. During my visit with him, everyone who walked in was on a first-named basis (now I am too), and they picked up their conversations with the staff right were they had left off from a previous visit. Customers come from all over the region, including Placerville and Dayton, to stock up at Overland. It’s the locals that keep his doors open, but it’s the visitors that help him thrive. So why would someone coming to Tahoe to see the mountains and the lake visit the local butcher shop?
ground beef, ribeyes, and New York steaks out of Bentley Ranch in Minden. bentlyranch.com “We want to keep it local as much as we can,” Cohen explains. “I believe in networking with other local businesses … When you come on vacation and you see local products available, you’re going to be bound to pick one of those up rather than some other item.” Their shelves are stocked with local wares including Alpen Sierra Coffee, Sonney’s Barbecue Sauce, and the famous Swiss Chalet Dressing. alpensierracoffee.com; sonneysbbqshack.com Bringing them back for more Cohen has a knack for generating loyal

“Because who wouldn’t want to have a nice custom porterhouse or fresh fish filet when you’re on vacation?” as Cohen points out. Many visitors have access to a kitchen or grill, and cooking outdoors is part and parcel of summer at Lake Tahoe (please grill responsibly). Visitors who have gone to Overland in the past usually make it a point to stop in on a return visit. Overland is a part of the South Lake Tahoe Experience as much as any bike or hiking trail. Sure, you can char just about anything over an open flame, but if you want to eat as the locals do (and eat well), be sure to stop in at Overland Meat & Seafood Co. And tell Brian I said hello.
