Visitors will be greeted by the wacky Mr. E., master brainteaser and puzzler extraordinaire, and current curator of the Mindbender Society. He will explain the mysteries of Mindbender Mansion and how to become a member of the eccentric Mindbender Society by gathering hidden clues

The Reno/Tahoe area may be known as a winter wonderland, especially on a bluebird day after a snowfall. But sometimes it’s just too cold and blustery to get outdoors. Luckily, there are plenty of options, both indoors and out, to keep the whole family occupied no matter the weather outside.
Stay and play inside A museum tour is just the ticket to explore in the comfort of central heating. See over 200 amazing automobiles, or Be the Astronaut at the National Auto Museum’s new interactive exhibit, and fly a spaceship or drive a rover in different space missions. If the arts are more your thing, be sure to visit the Nevada Museum of Art. See original exhibits by artists like Maya Lin (Tahoe Watershed) and Trevor Paglen (Orbital Reflector). From January 31 – May 5, the Wilbur D. May Museum will host The Lost World of Dragons. Delve into the legends and see dragons come to life through animatronics, interactive displays and virtual reality. The Discovery Museum offers 67,000 square feet of indoor activities. Try their new Mindbender Mansion and expand your mind with brainteasers and interactive challenges. automuseum.org; nevadaart.org; wahoecounty.us; nvdm.org Express your creative side with fun crafting projects at Tahoe Modern Makers. They’ve got everything you need to make a variety of crafts and projects, including ceramics, wood burning, sewing, paper crafts, and much more! Even if you’ve never crafted before, they offer classes to help bring out your inner creative genius. Take-home craft supplies help extend the artistic adventures. tahoemodernmakers.com If you like going fast, then you’ll love Reno’s Need2Speed. State-of-the-art electric carts allow you to race around an indoor track (with no emissions!) at speeds up to 45 miles per hour. To make things more interesting, you can even race under black light. Want even more thrills? Try their virtual reality roller coaster or hone your putting game with a few rounds of blacklight mini golf. need2speed.com

Channel your inner warrior and defy gravity at Reno’s latest indoor adventure park. Urban Air Adventure Park offers trampolines, ropes courses, warrior obstacle courses, beam battles, a tubes playground, and more! There’s even an indoor Sky Rider coaster. While this place is fun for all ages, after they’re done adventuring those 21 and up can enjoy an adult beverage in the lounge. urbanairtrampolinepark.com
Best of both worlds For many people, winter is the time to lace up their skates, and practice those glides, twirls, and swirls. Get your skate on at the only indoor rink in the Reno/Tahoe area, South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena. Or combine a day on the slopes with time on the ice at Heavenly Village or the Village at Northstar. In addition to great ice skating, both offer cafes, bars, restaurants and shops in their villages, so you won’t have to go far for a drink or a bite to eat. Those closer to Reno can skate around the Reno Aces Ice Rink in downtown Reno. tahoearena.co; skiheavenly.com; northstarcalifornia.com; renoaces.com You don’t have to make it to the crag to climb. Stay pumped through the winter at South Lake Tahoe’s Blue Granite Climbing. Featuring 42-foot-tall climbing walls and a bouldering area, they also have classes and clinics to help up your climbing
game. Yoga and pilates classes keep limbs loose and limber in between sends. Want to go higher? Try scaling the “world’s tallest climbing wall” at the Basecamp at Whitney Peak Hotel in downtown Reno. There’s also an indoor bouldering gym, in addition to fitness, yoga and pilates classes. bluegraniteclimbing.com; whitneypeakhotel.com Lake Tahoe never freezes, so there’s no reason not to get on the water in winter. Being in the middle of Big Blue with majestic snow-capped mountains all around is just spectacular. Enjoy stunning daytime vistas of Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay, or cruise under the stars on an evening dinner cruise with live entertainment on the M.S. Dixie II. Heated, multi-level, indoor cabins will keep you nice and toasty, even in frosty weather. zephyrcove.com Did you know that winter is actually an ideal time for catching certain fish in Lake Tahoe? Find out for yourself, with the experienced crew at Tahoe Sport Fishing Co., who provide everything you need to catch your own Mackinaw, Brown or Rainbow Trout. When the temperature dips, warm up in their heated cabin and enjoy complimentary hot beverages and snacks. tahoesportfishing.com

Their current offerings are part of their 2019 classics revolution and include “The Dresser,” which takes you backstage at a theatre in the English provinces during WWII, followed by Agatha Christie’s “Akhnaton.” Goodluck Macbeth Theatre Company, the region’s premiere black box theatre, promises to deliver an innovative interpretation of “Shakespeare in Love.” Their next show is “The Wolves,” a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer prize for drama that centers around the experiences of high school girls through their weekly Saturday morning soccer game warm ups. renolittletheater.org; bruka.org; goodluckmacbeth.org Whether you decide to share a laugh, be mesmerized by magic, shed a tear or sing along to a Broadway tune, you and your loved ones are sure to be wowed by the region’s vibrant theatre scene.

Even as a child, Luca Genasci had big ideas. A Tahoe native, Genasci always knew his future was here. He was searching for the next big idea when it hit him. “There’s no Lake Tahoe brand of craft beer. I wanted to create the Lake Tahoe brand of craft beer,” explains the founder of Lake Tahoe AleWorX. Not only that, but he wanted to combine the best of what Tahoe had to offer … adventure. The first AleWorX opened in 2017 at the Crossing, debuting the Cali Common, brewed with fresh Tahoe water. Featuring 30 self-serve taps (with 25 constantly rotating), customers create their own tasting adventure. In addition to a range of regional craft beers, there’s also cider, wine, kombucha and even nitro coffee.
The well-curated menu includes a variety of signature wood-fired pizzas, plus the ability to customize your own pie, small bites and hearty salads big enough to be shared. It’s a winning formula: the first AleWorX location quickly turned into a popular community hub, with special events and live music on their spacious outdoor patio. It’s a success that Genasci has replicated with a second location at Stateline. In addition to self-serve beer and wine, there’s also a full bar, with an emphasis on craft whiskeys and cocktails. “We try to do things in a detailed fashion, and to do things right,” explains Genasci. “We want to offer an elevated experience.” And that’s exactly what I got. I really enjoyed the process of being able to try a bunch of different beers on my own. I also enjoyed my gin and tonic, and I don’t even like gin! Feeling adventurous, I decided to try their Zucca pizza, even though I wasn’t sure about butternut squash puree on a pizza. But you know what? It was delicious! Plus being able to dip the crust in their homemade infused olive oil just elevated the whole pizza experience. At Stateline, their Silent Disco Fridays and DJs on Saturdays make for fun nights out.

Combine that with big screen TVs for live sports, and a host of specials and special events, there’s always an adventure and good vibes just waiting to happen. And I can’t wait to taste my next adventure!

Take the chill out of winter with open-flame cooking in Reno/Tahoe. They say fire made us human. The ability to cook with fire is now believed to be the reason humans evolved from primates. The theory is simple: cooking food means less time chewing on fibrous plants and more time communicating with your neighbor. Our jaw muscles grew smaller as our brains grew bigger. Exactly when humans managed to harness fire is unknown, but every culture has an origin story about
where fire came from. It’s that important. Maybe that’s why roasting marshmallows is so satisfying? Yes, there are now myriad ways we heat food. But when the microwave just doesn’t cut it on a cold, snowy night in the Sierra, here are some great ways to warm up and reconnect with your primitive side.
Have some hibachi A hibachi is a Japanese cooking device, which translates to “fire bowl,” but now the name has become synonymous with tableside cooking and dramatic flare (You know, the thing where they sometimes throw their knives around.). While we can’t guarantee dramatic knife tricks, there will most certainly be flames. The well-known Ichiban Japanese Steak House & Sushi Bar has a location right inside Harrah’s Reno. They’ve been cooking and entertaining from behind the stainless grilltop for over 30 years. ichibanreno.com If you prefer a little more local flavor, IJJI 2 Sushi & Japanese Steakhouse in Reno offers knife-wielding chefs and mile-high flame bursts right before your eyes. It’s a great place to turn your dinner into a show. ijjisushiandhibachi.com
Fondue for you Fondue hails from Switzerland and France. It is traditionally a communal pot of cheese melted over an open flame (‘Nuff said, right?) that one then dips various edible things into. In America the term has been generalized to include any type of melty goodness, such as chocolate and … um … chocolate, that one can use as a piping-hot dip. Let’s face it, cheese goes well on everything, and if it doesn’t, chocolate will. Liberty Food & Wine Exchange in Reno is a local staple with a big vision. They are true believers in using food for good. And, maybe just as importantly, they have fondue! You can start your meal with a flame-licked pot of cheese. libertyfoodandwine.com

If you’re in Carson City, head to Bella Vita Bistro for a simply amazing black truffle fondue. Yep, it’s like adding extravagance to a pot of bubbling luxury. It’s what dreams are made of. And, La Fondue in Incline Village offers fondue in fine-dining form. The grand fondue experience for two includes everything from prawns to bacon-wrapped dates to dip into bubbling cheese, and it comes with chocolate fondue for dessert. bellavitabistro.com; tahoefondue.com
Hot pot hits the spot Hot pot is a Chinese style of cooking with a pot of boiling soup stock in the middle of the table that diners then use to cook their ingredients in as they eat. This can include all kinds of foodstuffs such as thinly sliced meat, vegetables, mushrooms, wontons, dumplings or tofu. It’s like a customized, deconstructed soup that you share! Tahoe Hot Pot is a recent addition to Stateline dining. Diners beginning by selecting their broth of choice, and then add various meats, seafood and/or vegetables. You then dip your food in the pot and it cooks right in front of you in only a few seconds. Next comes a selection of dipping sauces. You can have a different flavor combo in every bite. Asian Noodles in Reno also offers “Asian hot pot fondue,” since fondue has become a catchall for any warm pot on the table. You can make your own pho with delicious meat, vegetables and noodles.
Sizzling Korean barbeque Korean barbeque is a popular style of Korean cuisine where the food is grilled right at the table. Often the grill is built into the table, but if not a portable grill is usually provided. Diners can then cook to their heart’s content, even if it’s raining outside. IJJI 4 Korean BBQ brings the fun of table-top grilling to Reno. Marinated bulgogi and galbi (thinly sliced marinated beef and short ribs, respectively) among many other things are brought out raw, so you can enjoy the pleasure as sizzling meat without having to get coals started. ijjisushiandhibachi.com In Sparks, Siu Korean BBQ mixes things up with a little fusion flare. Next to your bulgogi you can grill Hawaiian steak, pork belly, or even octopus. Experiment like a true carnivore by throwing everything on the fire. siukoreanbbq.com
A good old-fashioned grill Sometimes all you need is a grill and some flames. In America, we’ve made grilling so versatile that it can be casual, formal or anywhere in between. Around here, there are places to try tableside grilling at both ends of the spectrum. A local favorite in Reno is Pignic Pub & Patio. This unusual spot is basically a community patio, should you find yourself without one. There is a full bar on site, but other than that, dinner is up to you. Grills, cookware and utensils are provided, but you bring home the bacon … so to speak. You’re welcome to cook anything you’d like! renoriver.org/pignic-pub-patio On the fancy end is the Sage Room inside Harveys in Stateline. The Sage Room is an old-school steakhouse with a dramatic twist: most meals are prepped and cooked tableside, including dessert! With the mouth-watering thrill of a sizzling steak as it cooks within a fine dining atmosphere, you get the best of all worlds. caesars.com/harveys/lake-tahoe Photos this page:The Sage Room, Tahoe Hot Pot

eing a freelance writer is not the glamorous gig that movies and TV shows make it out to be. Rather than lounging in Louboutins while dreamily perfecting prose, my life more resembles that gif of a cat slamming its paws on a keyboard. However, every once in a while, I get an assignment such as this one. For the following article, I did the hard, hard work of seriously investigating various massages and spas in the Reno/Tahoe area. And while some might shirk from being kneaded and plied with prosecco, I would never abandon my commitment to getting the real story.
PEACE IN THE PINE TREES Housed on the second floor of The Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe, The Spa at Edgewood Tahoe offers an oasis inside a haven. With stunning views of Lake Tahoe and the cozy embrace of towering pine trees, this enchanting retreat is what you imagine when you think "Tahoe getaway." The Spa offered the perfect location for a relaxing and romantic couples' massage for myself and the husband. After being lulled to sleep by the rhythmic and relaxing hands of my massage therapist, we relaxed in our very own private lounge, bubbly in hand. edgewoodtahoe.com
D O W N T O W N G E TAWAY Northern Nevada’s newest luxury spa experience, The Spa at Silver Legacy, offered me a peaceful respite from the aforementioned keyboard slamming. (That’s a lie. I brought my laptop with me to meet a deadline.) The alpine-inspired, naturally lit environs of the region’s largest spa treatment facility provides an idyllic setting for 12 massage options, ranging from classic to innovative. The team at the spa designed each massage with the area traveler in mind. For example, the Fiery Snow Massage incorporates traditional hot stone therapy and white cold marble stone chasers, while the Slide Mountain Detox Massage uses cleansing oils to decongest and promote the release of toxins naturally. Next time, I’m going to double down and try the Pair of Aces, which features two perfectly synchronized massage therapists creating a customized full body massage. silverlegacyreno.com
GO GRAND Another beautiful spa to sneak away to for some pampering is the Spa at Grand Sierra Resort. Before a massage, soak up the serenity in the spa’s indoor pool. Then, enjoy a massage treatment with aromatherapy to truly let go and relax. And while sticks and stones may sometimes break bones, The Sticks and The Stones massage treatments at this spa will soothe your muscles instead. The Stones features heated basalt stones while The Sticks uses heated bamboo sticks to decompress sore muscles while detoxifying and soothing the skin. grandsierraresort.com

There’s No Place Like Home — Winter Edition A tribute to the places in Reno/Tahoe that we miss dearly. In our Fall 2018 issue, I divulged a bit about my family and our adventure living in Kansas in a travel trailer with a two year old while my husband attends Army Command and General Staff College. (Phew, that’s a mouthful. My apologies, dear reader.) While the walls of our tiny home on wheels may be closing in on us, there are several comforts of home that continue to hold a warm spot in our hearts. Here’s a look at some of the places we would go if we could trade places with you at this very moment …
Sierra tastes The wintry months can be bone chilling, even in Reno/Tahoe. I’ve always enjoyed the toasty goodness served in porcelain at bibo coffee co., with several locations in the Biggest Little City. And, you can’t beat a piping hot bowl of pho. I absolutely love to dress my giant tureen filled with meat, veggies and perfectly seasoned broth at My Thai & Noodle in South Lake Tahoe. bibocoffeecompany.com; mythainoodle.com
Get outside One of our favorite places to go this time of year is Chickadee Ridge located within the Tahoe Meadows on the Tahoe Rim Trail. Snowshoe up the mountainside where you’ll find chickadees, small, native birds that are trained to land in your hand, and sweeping views of the area. Across the trailhead and Mt. Rose Highway, you can also get some serious sledding in. tahoerimtrail.org
Home means Nevada Yes, it’s our state song and The Killers perform a great cover, but it’s also the name of a local clothing brand that makes, well, killer souvenirs. Home Means Nevada Co., with a storefront in the Southcreek Shopping Center in South Reno, has outfitted our family before our son was even born. Head here for a great hoodie, cap or t-shirt and let everyone know that you had an amazing time out our way! homemeansnevada.com
There are so many great ski resorts to choose from, too. My dad is an expert ski coach and former World Cup racer — he and my stepmom head this way from Minnesota every year for some of the best slopes in the world. Full disclosure, I was not graced with the skiing gene and it takes me a shot of schnapps before I can take my first run, but the myriad of hills and lodges will not disappoint. I recommend you experience a few around the area and checkout our Ski Guide on page 18 for a full list of options.
