Spring in the Sierra has its own sense of magic, a type of experience that embraces a great awakening that is unique to its own. Witnessing this arise gives talented photographers endless direction and opportunity to capture these wondrous scenes. AJ Marino, of Tahoe Media Collective, specializes in outdoor and environmental filmmaking and uses his conscious mission to create stunning images and time-lapse videos. His photo of the famous Lake Tahoe lupines was taken at Lake Forest Beach in Tahoe City, a place where photographers flock during the spring months. tahoemediacollective.com While exploring the Sierra it’s likely you’ll stumble upon the Yellow Mules Ear. They stand taller than most flowers, resemble a smaller sunflower and thrive in a variety of flora-filled environments. Michael Eadington snapped this gorgeous sunset illuminating the flowers on Lake Tahoe’s North Shore during the spring bloom. Michael’s ability to capture scenic beauty and landscape photos on both digital and film truly gives his audience a glimpse of being there in the moment. theeadingtongallery.com
Dotty Molt is a visionary leader in local floral and landscape photography. Her passion for the outdoors speaks volumes and she is devoted to delivering iconic photos, or “flowers with a view” as she calls them. She elegantly captures the “the tiny dots that come together to form beautiful images filled with light and color.” Dotty explores the many trails around Mt. Rose both the Nevada high desert and beautiful Lake Tahoe with stunning flower displays. carpepixels.com Spring is the season to embrace the longer days and admire the beauty of the great outdoors!
Art in the Great Outdoors By Annie Flanzraich
EXPLORE NORTHERN NEVADA’S OUTDOOR ART WALKS, MURALS AND SCULPTURES THIS SPRING When the weather turns warm in Northern Nevada, all I want to do is spend as much time as possible outdoors while enjoying the fresh-smelling air and radiant sun. Now, there are many ways to do this — hiking, spending time at the dog park with my reluctant schnauzer, brunching on patios or simply sipping a cup of coffee on an Adirondack chair. But, I think the best way to experience the glory of temperate weather is by pairing it with art. Luckily, there's a host of ways to pair the two. Here are some of my favorites.

NOW TRENDING Spring in the new By Meghan Burk
Every change in season brings new things to try, new styles to wear, and places to visit! Here’s my lineup of the area’s freshest spots to discover when you’re springing in to Reno/Tahoe.
BOWL-ICIOUS Skip the plate and go for the bowl. Whether it’s acai bowls, poke bowls, noodle bowls or B.Y.O.B. (Build Your Own Bowl), bowls of food are in. Restaurants are loving this trend just as much as I am, featuring simple clean ingredients that pack a lot of flavor, and for a great price. Super charge your morning at Basik Acai Café in Midtown Reno, this is their second location with a home base in Hawaii. You’ll fall in love with their contemporary selection of acai bowls and smoothies. I’m a sucker for blueberries and strawberries so the puna is my go to, a spin on the classic acai bowl. When lunchtime is near, Pola Poke is my favorite Reno poke joint. Try the vacation bowl that piles on savory proteins like tuna, salmon with tagashi and pineapple ponzu and topped with crunchy goodness, like coconut and macadamia. When you’re in a rush, take a sushi burrito to go, at Poke Rock in Tahoe or FinBomb Sushi Burrito + Poke Bar in Midtown. For the finale, BAB Café in Reno is a new restaurant serving up Korean flavors with their nutritious rice bowls like their spin on teriyaki chicken, spicy pork, and kimchi with vegetarian and gluten-free favorites. My mouth is watering after writing this. basikacai.com; polapokebowl.com; finbombsushi.com; bab-café.com
GAME ON Take a hike PlayStation because the classics are back! Press Start Bar & Arcade brings you to a time when pinball machines were the raddest and arcade games were cool beans. This new “barcade” and gaming space features dozens of the most popular lost games. Before you push start, grab a themed cocktail like the Miss Pacman Margarita or Donkey Kong Manhattan. For some serious mind games, escape rooms are the newest craze to hit the area and I have yet to successfully accomplish any of my missions. Even though I know I’m not literally trapped in a room and I know a ghost, zombie or murderer is not going to bust down the door in 60 minutes, solving the clues and uncovering the mystery gets my adrenaline peeking every time. Puzzle Room has multiple locations in Reno/Tahoe and themed rooms that will get your heart pounding. It’s not just a cup of coffee. It’s the start to your day, your motivation, your conversation starter. More and more, coffee lovers appreciate the expertise of smallbatch roasters — for the flavor they are able to achieve, confidence in where it originated and recognition of who’s roasting it. Clyde’s Coffee Roasting Co. on Tahoe’s Nevada side is family owned and operated. With their roaster in the back, I can assure you that they make the perfect cup every time. Pair it with a homemade lemon poppy seed scone, and you’ll have the best morning. Just down the road on Tahoe’s California side, Black Cabin Coffee roasts their beans sourced only from co-op farms that use sustainable harvesting practices and only uses 100-percent organic syrups. Off the hill in Reno, the award winning Magpie Coffee Roasters had its humble beginnings in a garage, until the two friends refined their product, opening their artisanal coffee roastery at the end of Midtown. clydecoffee.com; blackcabincoffee.com; magpieroasters.com

SCENIC SWINGS THE BEAUTY OF LAKE TAHOE GOLF COURSE
A
s an avid golfer, there are a few things on my must-have list when it comes to the ideal course: Friendly staff, views galore and a challenging but enjoyable game. The moment I walked into the clubhouse at Lake Tahoe Golf Course I knew my round would be amazing no matter my final score. Greeted by Kevin Sommerfeld, general manager at Lake Tahoe Golf Course, we first strolled the grounds as he told me about all the great things happening around the course. We talked about the spectacular 18 holes, great views and the events they host. From bachelor parties (which I saw first hand) to weddings and banquets, this course hosts amazing events complete with a snazzy dance floor! Nothing says fun like a great location with spectacular views. Speaking of those sights, let’s talk about some of the best panoramas you’ll find on any golf course around. Walk out to the first tee for an inspired 360-degree scene — the only reason you’ll remember you’re playing golf and not
sightseeing is the driver in your hand. Straight ahead off the tee, you’ll see Dick’s Peak and Mount Tallac. Okay, time to focus and hit that opening tee shot.
this course. To add even more entertainment, they have footgolf after 5 p.m. Nothing says family fun or an exciting date night like a round of footgolf.
The landscape only continues to impress. About the time you drive up to hole six your jaw will drop while looking at the stunning Truckee River. Nothing will beat trying to knock down that 10-foot birdie putt with the mesmerizing view of the river right in front of you. I hope you knock it in with ease! Making the turn onto the back nine, you may find many shots hard to hit as you stare at the river flowing by sky-high snow-capped mountains. You might even spot a kayaker, or two.
Lake Tahoe Golf Course is a reasonably priced showstopper. After your memorable round, as you relax on the patio taking in all that surrounds you while drinking their signature Happier Gilmore, you will surely agree life does not get any better.
When it comes to a challenging but enjoyable course, this is the place. The front nine is open — you can grip it and rip it like John Daly. The back nine brings target golf into play. Sure, you can still grip and rip, but the risk/ reward game becomes part of your thought process along with those views. This course is setup for everyone to play with multiple tee boxes so it won’t matter if you’re a single digit handicapper or a first-time player, you’ll enjoy

VACATION HAS GONE TO THE DOGS! By Michael Tragash
Family vacation is more fun when you can bring everyone, including the dog! After all, they deserve to explore too, and there’s something so satisfying about watching them enjoy all life has to offer. Those lucky dogs that get to tag along on a trip to Reno/Tahoe are in for a tail-wagging good time! From hiking and swimming, to treats by your feet, here are some great four-legged-friendly places you’ll all enjoy! GETTING OFF LEASH Being cooped up in a hotel room is definitely not your dog’s idea of fun. Lucky for them, Reno/Tahoe has quite a few conveniently located and well appointed dog parks and lots of great off-leash hiking. If you’re in the Reno area, Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, just north of downtown, will have you all howling. The park was a working cattle ranch through most of the 1900s, and now as a park, it has had one of those former pastures transformed into a 25-acre off-leash dog park. The park is also home to the Wilbur D. May Museum, the May Arboretum and offers access to a wide range of trails that explore Keystone Canyon and Peavine Mountain, which looks down on Reno from the north. If you’re seeking the serenity of nature, the Galena Creek Trail System, beneath Mt. Rose between Reno and Incline Village,
offers some fantastic options with views of both the high desert and alpine landscapes. Dogs really let loose on White’s Creek Loop, an easy seven miles with ample shade that will take you along the creek, up to a beautiful dry pond meadow, and past vistas of the Washoe Valley. When you’re visiting Lake Tahoe the last place you want to be is away from those crystal blue waters. If your pup’s a swimmer, or a splasher, the calm and cool water will be pure paradise. So why not let them indulge a bit at one of the dog beaches found on every shore? Less than 10 miles from the fabled Emerald Bay you’ll find Kiva Beach. This is a popular locals hang, so arrive early or late afternoon for the best chance at finding a place to park. Dogs must be leashed here at all times, and this is a policy strictly enforced by the rangers who periodically visit. That said, you’re likely to find a big group of playful pups enjoying themselves, all together, in and around the water if you go. For lakeside off-leash fun, I’d highly encourage a visit to Fallen Leaf Lake. Tucked up above Lake Tahoe, secluded from the wind by the surrounding peaks, with waters that transition from aquamarine to nearly jet black as the bottom descends, this lake is one of the most breathtakingly picturesque places

in Tahoe. The campground day-use area offers access to off-leash beaches, and if you’re looking to explore, the hiking trails winding around the shore for about 11 miles will have your pooch playing in the water while you take it all in. If you’re off on a day trip and in search of a place to get them out of the car for a stretch, set Bijou Community Park in South Lake as your destination. The dog park is securely fenced with separate areas for small and large dogs, and a full agility course too. There’s a BMX track, skate park, eighteen hole disc golf course and hiking trails too, meaning this park is fun for the whole family. DINNER WITH YOUR DOG Exploring the local food scene is a big part of the travel experience, and in Reno/Tahoe, there’s no need to stare into those puppy dog eyes when it’s time to head out the door because there are a whole lot of places that are happy to welcome you both to the table. If you’re in Downtown Reno, slowly strolling and eating your way through the Riverwalk District can be a full-day activity! Pup friendly parks and more than ten great businesses, including bars, retail shops and restaurants like Renaissance Reno Downtown, Wild River Grille, and The Eddy offer dog-friendly accommodations. Stop in the Reno-Tahoe Visitor Center or

Zephyr Cove Resort offers fun options for the whole family. By Heidi Bethel
For years now, I’ve dreamed of owning an Airstream. The cute shape, sophisticated style and fun personality of these beloved travel trailers just screams, “America.” This is why, when Zephyr Cove Resort announced they recently purchased three new 30-foot International Signature Airstreams, I did a serious jump for joy. Now, not only can my family experience glamping at a whole new level (and without the hefty price tag), we get to do it in absolute paradise. Speaking of paradise … Zephyr Cove Resort is just that. Nestled on the shores of Lake Tahoe, this place is a favorite with beautiful shoreline, great camping and tons of amenities. Whether you decide to stay here or swing by during your visit, be sure to hop aboard the M.S. Dixie II paddle wheeler for an amazing lake cruise. The 500-passenger beauty departs daily for daytime, dinner and private trips to Emerald Bay and back. For a truly special excursion on the water, on Wednesday evenings try their Sipping at Sundown Cruise aboard the Tahoe Paradise yacht. Talk about awe-inspiring views of the lake! At the Zephyr Cove Marina, you’ll find endless amounts of lakeside fun. With a milelong beach, enjoy volleyball, fishing or just a lazy day soaking up the sun. (Don’t forget the sunscreen, BTW.) Looking for a little
adventure on the water? Take the flight of a lifetime on a sky-high parasail or test your waterskiing and wakeboarding skills. They even have a new pontoon boat and six new Searay SPX 230 Outboard speedboats that you can rent. When you’re hungry, just pop over to one of the onsite eateries. The Zephyr Cove Restaurant offers local and sustainable cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Try their smoked salmon benedict for a delicious start to your day. Oh, and don’t forget to swing by later for one of their old-fashioned milkshakes. Or, bask in the great weather at Sunset Bar and Grille where you can enjoy your favorite adult libation and specialty frozen drink. Order some fries and other pub fare while you take in all that is Lake Tahoe. With the right amenities, tons of things to do and amazing views, it’s no wonder Zephyr Cove Resort is at the top of the list in South Lake. Be sure to get your glamp on in Tahoe! BE A GOOD SPORT THIS SPRING By Natasha Bourlin
Sporting Events and Teams Around the Region
Spring is not just a season, it’s a verb. We get a spring in our step once the weather warms back up, and an eagerness to get active. Whether you want to spectate or participate, here are some area sporting events and teams that show off the human body’s tremendous strength and fortitude this season. KICKIN’ AROUND Welcome to the Biggest Little City, Reno 1868 FC, a team that entered the United Soccer League (USL) in March 2017, then made a national name for itself with its record-breaking inaugural season. The team scored the most goals in USL history in its first year, and touted both the league’s MVP and Rookie of the Year as part of its lineup. Call it football or soccer, but catch their home games at Greater Nevada Field through October. reno1868fc.com.

A RAPID PACE Watch professional kayakers from across the globe course down the Truckee River through the Wingfield Park rapids during Reno River Fest, May 12 – 13. Not just for whitewater-adept wonders, spectators can peruse the craft brew and wine villages and vendor wares, listen to live music or take part in a costumed bike ride through downtown. renoriverfestival.com. PEDAL POWER On May 18, the Amgen Tour of California rolls through South Lake Tahoe, where the men’s stage six wraps up its journey from Folsom, and the women’s stage two takes place. TAHOE TOUGH Lake Tahoe’s natural environment is conducive to a cornucopia of human-powered activities. Several events celebrate that fact, like Adventure Sports Week (ASW) in and around Tahoe City. Between June 15 – 24, adrenaline will be pumping with an off-road triathlon plus competitive trail running and mountain biking events. Then take your heart rate down a notch with ASW’s clinics, films, gear demos and concerts. adventuresportsweektahoe.com. For more exhilaration, try the Alpenglow Mountain Festival in North Lake Tahoe June 16 – 24. With more than 50 events during the nine-day span, outdoor lovers can learn about their surroundings plus try — or advance their existing expertise — in hiking, trail running, stand up paddle boarding, rock climbing and yoga. alpenglowsports.com.

IN PURSUIT OF ALE Treading the local brew trails By Rae & Troy Matthews, Elevation Eats
48 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
Adventure + Beer. These are two ideas that are becoming synonymous with Reno/Tahoe. And, when done safely, they are happy companions. The brew scene is booming, and we were only too thrilled to explore the possibilities. While the beer is always satisfying, the adventure is made to order. Here is how to explore the local brew trails to fit your desired level of escapade. We’ve rated the trails from Chill to Moderate to Intense based on activity level and self-sufficiency. TAHOE SOUTH On the south side of the lake you’ll find the South Shore Beer Trail, rated Moderate. This 5-mile trek will take you through all of South Lake Tahoe along Highway 50. The trail begins at South Lake Brewing Company, a popular hangout that is dog friendly, relaxed, and a good place for a game of cornhole. Their one-year celebration block party is coming up in May! southlakebeer.com Moving down the road you’ll discover all the local favorites: Lake Tahoe AleWorX, which features 30 serve-yourself taps; Cold Water Brewery and Grill, the brewery pioneers of South Lake; Sidellis Lake Tahoe Brewery and Restaurant, these guys will ferment just about anything; and The Brewery at Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe’s original brewpub. laketahoealeworx.com; tahoecoldwaterbrewery.com; sidellis.com; brewerylaketahoe.com The trail wraps up at Stateline Brewery and Restaurant at Heavenly Village (Or, go the other direction. It’s your adventure. We don’t judge.) This is more or less a straight path, so we recommend walking, biking, or wrangling a designated driver. There are several bike rental shops all over town, or you can hop on a Lime Bike. Just be sure to arrange a lift or a Lyft back to where you started. A map can be found at tahoechamber.org. statelinebrewery.com; limebike. com; lyft.com Don’t miss the second annual Tahoe BrewFest returning on June 2! This beertastic event is your one-stop shop to sample brews from all over the basin. There will also be food, live music and fun games, and best of all the proceeds go to support the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe. tahoebrewfest.com RENO Seeking more bike and brew combos? Head to Reno and check out the Reno Brew Bike, rated Chill to Moderate, depending entirely on how much your friends pedal. This is a party bike. That’s right, a bike that seats up to 15 passengers, wisely steered by your brew tour guide. renobrewbike.com There are 21 bars and 3 types of tours to choose from. No, you can’t go to ALL of them, but you can reserve the bike for a private party or hop on with an open group and get to know some fellow adventurers. Optional bike stops include Lead Dog Brewing Co., a dog-friendly brewery known for their wild beer flavors; Mellow Fellow GastroPub, with 40 rotating beers on tap; and IMBIB Custom Brews, a regular award winner and local favorite. leaddogbrewing.com; mellowfellowpub.com; imbibreno.com If you would rather take the Reno brew scene into your own hands and save a few bucks with a self-guided tour, visitrenotahoe.com offers an online Reno Tahoe Brew Map. This is modality of choice. No straight, chronological paths here. There are great places to visit all over, and as long as you’re responsible, then how you map it is up to you, rated Moderate. Other great Reno breweries to consider: Brasserie Saint James, winner of the “2014 best mid-size brewpub and brewers in the nation” at The Great American Beer Festival; The Lincoln Lounge, a cozy “professor’s bar” featuring 30 drafts and 60 bottles to choose from; Piñon Bottle Company, who like to keep it interesting with a mystery tap night and beer tasting classes; and - a Photo opposite page: The Depot (Matt Morning); Photos this page: Cold Water Brewery & Grill (Rae Matthews), Lake Tahoe AleWorx (Brian Walker)

Located in the old headquarters of the NevadaCalifornia-Oregon Railway, The Depot is a brewery and distillery (bonus!) dedicated to fine ingredients and traditional craftsmanship. brasseriesaintjames.com; thelincolnlounge.com; @pinonbottle TAHOE NORTH If this is too tame for your adventure level, then head to the north side of the lake. The North Lake Tahoe Ale Trail(s), rated Intense, are not for couch potatoes. Here it’s best to pair outdoor fun with après adventure. Spend the day hiking, biking or paddling, and then cozy up with a frosty beverage. Shirley Canyon Trail is beautiful hike featuring waterfalls, boulders, and Shirley Lake. There’s even a seasonal tram at the top that you can ride back down. Then let the feeling in your legs return at PlumpJack Café and Bar at Squaw Valley Inn, and enjoy newAmerican cuisine delight where the beers are never boring. plumpjackcafe.com For serious road bikers the lake is the trail and the trail is the lake. Take the day and circle the 72-mile circumference of Lake Tahoe. Enjoy spectacular views and challenging climbs, and then put your feet up for a well-deserved brew at Alibi Ale Works. This little gem is one of the most popular breweries in Tahoe. Nearly every bar in the basin has a tap dedicated to Alibi. alibialeworks.com For some enjoyable mud on your face, take a mountain
biking adventure down the famous Flume Trail, known for some of the best views in Tahoe. And right at trail’s end, waiting to wet your whistle, is the Tunnel Creek Café, no driving needed. tunnelcreekcafe.com There are water trails too, and you can kayak or standup paddle board your way to a relaxing beverage. Launch from Crystal Bay or Hidden Beach and enjoy the beautiful shoreline views. Then head over to Cutthroat’s Saloon at Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, it’s as old-timey as it sounds, and they pride themselves on their rare and seasonal beer selection. laketahoe.regency.hyatt.com An interactive map of all trails and corresponding ale destinations can be found at gotahoenorth.com. However, if you’re all about the beer and not at all about the adventure, then turn the dial way down to Super Chill and book a ride with Tahoe Brew Tours. You can choose between a North Shore or a South Shore tour. This is the complete package for beertasting luxury, with a designated driver and guide, appetizers, and behind-the-scenes tours with local brewmasters. You barely even have to stand up. tahoebrewtours.com When adventure meets beer, you’ve had great day in Reno/Tahoe. Just be sure to drink and play responsibly. Cheers! BRUSH UP ON SAGEBRUSH By Heidi Bethel
It’s Nevada’s state flower. You’ll see it nearly everywhere, some blooming with pretty petals in the Sierra desert. A plethora just hanging around the outskirts of a dog park or lining a hiking trail. You may even spot a few dry, sporadic tumbleweed that have taken flight — bouncing hectically as you try to navigate around the scratchy debacle in a rental car. With several woody and vibrant smelling species, sagebrush is an iconic landscape staple in the arid West but it’s more than just a pretty-ish plant … so very much more.
56 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
SMUDGE AND STUFF Ancient Native American tradition included the burning of sagebrush in ceremonies to expel evil spirits, negative thoughts and feelings, and to keep danger away. While tribes used a variety of plants in their Sacred Smoke Bowl Blessings, the most common was white sage or sagebrush found in this area. Need to cleanse your space? Purchase smudge sticks and learn more about the practice at the Melting Pot World Emporium & Smoke Shop. meltingpotworldemporium.com At The Stem in the Basement in Reno’s Riverwalk District, they sell beautiful unique floral pieces embracing the natural landscape of the Sierra. Here, they use the dried trunk of sagebrush to create a natural area to apply succulents or air plants for really neat table displays, centerpieces and hanging decorations. They have a ton of other creative works to peruse and be sure to check out the other fun shops in the historic building. thestemflowers.com NV Woodwerks makes a variety of neat goods from and inspired by sagebrush. This is a great website to purchase a memento made from sagebrush. nvwoodwerks.com
SAGEBRUSH FOR YOUR SENSES Unlike delicate garden sage commonly used in cuisine, sagebrush has a bitter and poignant taste that requires a bit of finesse. Frey Ranch Estate Distillery has mastered the flavor profile in their Frey Ranch Gin grown, brewed and bottled on the 1200-acre ranch outside Fallon, Nev. They tapped into over 150 years of knowledge to cultivate their very own high-quality grains, which are complemented by juniper berries and sagebrush sourced right from the ranch. freyranch.com If you like the scent of sagebrush, head to Sagebrush Soap Factory in Gardnerville. Here, they make face and body soaps that provide a rich, creamy lather, rinse off squeaky clean, and moisturize the skin. They researched the effect of oils and emollients on our bodies, and developed skin care products that specifically address dry, sensitive skin. With the dry climate of the Sierra, visitors often mention a moisture-zapped feeling and their sagebrush and pinion soap may be just the way to rejuvenate. sagebrushsoapfactory.com If you find yourself gazing off into the vast high desert landscape, take another minute or two to appreciate all the wonders of sagebrush. And, perhaps bring a piece of the area’s fauna home to remember an amazing visit.

Shopping for exceptional olive oil in Reno/Tahoe
60 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
Few cooking ingredients are as ubiquitous as olive oil. Its versatility and health benefits have made it the go-to cooking companion in America. But is all olive oil created equal? Turns out, there is quite a lot to consider when purchasing this pantry staple. Some of the basics to look out for include: A dark tinted or opaque container – Light and heat can both affect the flavor. It’s best to store your oils in a dark space away from the stove. A “Best-by” or “Harvest” date – Oil will go bad eventually. You don’t want anything more than two years old. “Extra-Virgin” – This is an important standard. Anything labeled simply “olive oil” is generally made from lowergrade oils that have been more processed. An estate or region – The more specific information there is about the location of origin, the better. Simply saying “Product of Italy” on the label does not guarantee that the oil originated in Italy. Only that it was packed and shipped from there.
Flavor can vary greatly from brand to brand. Some boutique olive oil purveyors allow you to taste. Tasting olive oil can be a lot like tasting wine. It involves smell, taste, and texture. Some are bold and peppery, while others are smooth and buttery.
If you’re ready to take your oil up a notch, here are some great Reno/Tahoe locations: Big Horn Olive Oil Company is a family owned business out of Reno that specializes in flavorinfused ultra premium olive oil and vinegars. Started by a couple that moved to Reno, but couldn’t find the quality oils they loved, their pioneering efforts have taken off as they recently expanded to Las Vegas. Some delectable flavors include Harissa Infused Olive Oil and Blood Orange Fused Olive Oil. You can have your oils delivered or head to their Reno location and taste for yourself. bhooc.com If food sourcing is an important issue for you, check out We Olive & Wine Bar Reno. With locations all along the west coast, We Olive specializes and prides themselves in California-only sourced olive oil. Their Reno boutique also offers educational tastings, artisan wines, olive oil inspired tapas, craft beer, and community-focused events. weolive.com
Tahoe Oil and Spice in Truckee is all about fresh. They rotate their sources seasonally in order to have the freshest press on the shelf, and only purchase from estates that meet the highest testing standards. They encourage tasting and will even provide pairing sheets of suggested combinations for salad dressings, marinades and glazes. You can also get $1 off if you bring your bottle back for a refill. tahoeoilandspice.com In South Lake Tahoe you’ll find the locals’ favorite, The Cork and More. They feature a wide selection of wine, cheese, salami, and, yes, artisanal olive oil. If you’re looking to give the gift of olive oil, they will put together custom gift baskets for you as well. thecorkandmore.com Quality olive oil can provide fuller, richer flavor in your cooking, and if pleasing your palate is a must, then your cooking oil should not be neglected. With a little extra knowledge, olive oil can be the health staple that is both practical and luxurious.

N R G E A O IS THE
Tackling the latest color trend at the region’s top 10 boutiques By Emily Skyle
62 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com
! G N I H T Y R E NEW…EV
Confession: I wear so much black, I can’t walk into the makeup section of a store without a customer asking me to “ring something up.” This year, I decided I either needed to work at a MAC counter, or breakdown and embrace color. I opted for color, and my 2018 Color Challenge began. It started off great — until they announced spring’s color of the season … orange. The only orange things in my life are mimosas. How could I add it into my world without everything looking like a Halloween centerpiece? Determined, I set off on a mission to tackle this latest trend, putting my faith in the area’s best boutiques. My journey started in Reno’s Midtown District at Sierra Belle, known for fresh Los Angeles-inspired looks at an affordable price. They showed me a flirty mimosa-hued waffle knit top. Clearly, it was made for me. A few steps away I found Nomad. They pair bohemian-chic pieces with edgy showstoppers and taught me that kimonos were the perfect way to add a subtle orange floral pattern over black staples. Feeling confident, I hit The Couture Closet for fashion with a mountain flair. I’m not sure if it was the champagne, or the personal stylist – but I fell in love with everything. Downtown, at Dressed Boutique, I felt like I was shopping in a stylist’s home. They told me I should start with pastels, and gave me an orange sherbet top that pairs perfectly with leggings. Score! shopsierrabelle.com; nomadboutique.com; thecoutureclosetreno.com; @ dressedboutiquereno With a focus on home decor, I headed to The Nest, a quirky boutique filled with vintage pieces with a one-of-a-kind feel. I discovered a fabulous set of Klickitat Clay Canisters, with a subtle swirl of pumpkin spice. My next two stops were, Micano Home and Garden and Red Chair. Wow. Micano had amazing repurposed decor with a parochial charm and Red Chair was filled with fabulous mid-century pieces. thenestreno.com; micanohome.com; @ red-chair My search continued in Tahoe City at Fine ‘N Funky, where I was surrounded by stylish looks from global designers and found a midi dress by Novella Royale with a super bold, orange-based pattern. Feeling emboldened, I made my way to Sealed with a Kiss, in South Lake Tahoe. You know when you’re doing really well on your diet, and then immediately cheat? That happened here. Despite their team showing me easy ways to add a pop of orange with their amazing accessories, I left with a little black dress. My last stop was GaiaLicious Global Gifts, a boutique with a conscious, where I found 143 = I Love You bracelets. As someone who once rocked a pager, the reference put a smile on my face and a splash of orange on my wrist. shopfinenfunky.com; shopswak.com; gaialiccious.com

Natural Attractions Unplug from everyday life at Sorensen’s Resort
By Meghan Burk
This best-kept secret is tucked away in beautiful Hope Valley, Calif., just 20 minutes from Lake Tahoe. It’s the perfect blend of cozy and comfortable relaxation for outdoor lovers hoping to spend time away from emails and cell phones. And by the way, you won’t find any TVs, internet or cell service here, giving you the opportunity to read that book you packed. (You know what I’m talking about!) Offering an ideal mountain experience, enjoy endless recreation every season. In the early summer and extending into fall, explore a wildflower wilderness hike or nature walk on their array of trails. Then relax, sipping wine as you cozy up next to the campfire. Nearby corrals offer Pony Express-inspired horseback rides. Kick up your heels biking in the Sierra from road biking to mountain biking or take an exhilarating adventure white-water rafting the East Fork of the Carson River. Hosted workshops and other festivities are a special treat, from stargazing, to music, water coloring, photography and more, so be sure to check their schedule of events online. Need to fuel those adventures? You’ll love the Sorensen’s Country Café. Serving three delicious meals a day, my favorite item on the menu is their signature beef burgundy stew complemented with a glass of red from their stock of fine wines. On your way out, pick up some memorabilia at their quaint gift shop to remember your already memorable time here.
Whether it’s exploring wildflower-filled trails in Hope Valley or taking a fly-fishing lesson on the West Fork of the Carson River, Sorensen’s Resort is my chance to take in all the natural attractions. This is where locals go to unplug and unwind from the hustle and bustle of life.
When you’re ready to plan your visit, check real-time weather conditions on their website. They are now an official National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather station, giving you the most accurate weather conditions and road access. Sorensen’s is also excited to announce their electric car plug-in stations, partnering with Tesla to support gas-free cars on the road and becoming a Supercharger location to help keep Tahoe blue and the Sierra green.
