Go Wild at Sierra Safari Zoo BY CARISSA OATLEY
H
ave you ever seen a Liger, a marvelous lion and tiger hybrid, up close? You heard it right, they do exist! Have you held out food to a deer and smiled as it ate out of your hand? Have you talked to a parrot and to your amazement heard it speak? If not, you owe it to yourself and your family to visit Sierra Safari Zoo in Reno, the biggest little zoo in the world! The only community zoo in northern Nevada, the whole family will marvel at all there is to see and do. If you have been to a zoo before and think they are all the same, prepare yourself to experience it in a whole new way at this truly exceptional zoo. 12

It’s more than a Zoo… it’s an Adventure!
If you have children, visiting Sierra Safari Zoo is a great way to teach them about environmental responsibility. Recently, the zoo unveiled its solar electric installation, which provides most of the electricity for the zoo. Make sure to ask one of the many volunteers about this instrumental and irreplaceable addition.
Sierra Safari Zoo opened its unique property 22 years ago because the owners enjoyed interacting and caring for animals. Recognizing there was little opportunity for most people to view, learn about and interact with amazing creatures from around the world, they decided to start what is now Sierra Safari Zoo.
Sierra Safari Zoo is located at 10200 N. Virginia Street in Reno - just 8 miles North of Downtown off Exit 78 on Red Rock Road. Just follow the signs. For information, call 775-677-1104. The animals look forward to seeing you soon! sierrasafarizoo.org
There are few places where you can take your family to learn about exotic live animals the way you can here. Imagine having the ability to view, photograph and learn about more than 150 animals from around the world while also being able to reach out and interact with them. Sure, you can walk by and view animals at almost any zoo in America—but the human care and love for the animals is what sets Sierra Safari Zoo apart from the rest. The animals and zookeepers both enjoy interacting with visitors. Since the zoo is home to many types and species of animals, you are always sure to get a glimpse of the new babies born year round. Many visitors return over and over again to see their favorite friends grow and change – it can be a fun tradition of going to the zoo and watching your favorite babies grow up right before your eyes year after year. Nowhere is the inspiring appreciation and love for animals at Sierra Safari Zoo more evident than when you see the volunteers interact with the animals. The animals are cared for by more than 40 volunteers who have a true passion and love for the animal kingdom.

Biking Adventures on The Flume Trail BY JESSICA SCHNOLL PHOTOS MATT MORNING
The Flume Trail is one of the most popular trails in Tahoe and is by far one of the nation’s most scenic trails. It consistently makes the top 10 must-do trail list in mountain biking magazines everywhere – and with good reason. The trail offers you a sweeping bird’s-eye view of Lake Tahoe from about 1,500 feet above the lake. It’s also not for the faint of heart with a four mile uphill climb and several singletrack, cliff-hugging sections. I’m definitely not an avid mountain biker by any means and I’d describe myself as mediocre at best, but I decided to give this infamous trail a try last summer. This one-way trail starts at Spooner Summit and winds its way on an old dirt road through aspens and pine trees as you trek four miles uphill to Marlette Lake. The last mile is a doozy and I ended up walking my bike. But don’t give up! This is the only uphill part of the entire 13-mile ride. Marlette Lake is a great place to take a break and recover. Bring your lunch or take a dip in the Alpine Lake before continuing on. The next few miles are basically flat or downhill as you make your way along the edge of cliffs with the most spectacular views of the lake below. At this point, I almost forgot the pain I went through to get here, and it was completely worth it. My favorite spot was overlooking Sand Harbor where the water is every color of turquoise you can imagine, and the water is so clear you can see the boulders under the water!

Almost too soon it was time to head back into the hills and start the descent back down to the shuttle pick up point near Incline Village. Thank goodness for the shuttle service back up to the car! Soaring Over Lake Tahoe BY DIANE HANSEN PHOTOS SOARING NV
I
’m not going to call myself a daredevil, although GO sometimes I wishREAD I were one.WATCH My vacation stories are usually pretty light on the action, heavy on the hammocks. Would I like to do a deep dive at high altitude in Lake Tahoe? Absolutely! Have I gone beyond taking a beginning diving class in a swimming pool? No.
So, needless to say, I was a little nervous when I found myself considering going aloft in an aircraft with no engine. At first thought, flying in a glider seemed like an activity only for the adventurous in spirit or brave of heart. Yet after just a few minutes with the good people at SoaringNV in Minden, Nev., I knew I was in good hands. The professionals at SoaringNV really took their time getting me comfortable with my safety equipment, the glider itself and what I would be experiencing before I took off. Even though I would be sitting in front, Russell Holtz, an FAA-certified glider pilot instructor with over 10,000 glider flights in his stack of log books, would literally have my back, piloting the plane from the back seat. Suited up with the first parachute I have worn in my life, I was excited and ready to go. Russell explained the controls to me like I was a pilot in training. The excitement mounted as the tow plane pilot attached the tow line to the glider, started his own engine and began to take off. The glider followed the tow plane with ease. At the right moment, Russell let me pull the yellow knob for releasing the tow line. He told me I could have any kind of flight I wanted. We could take it nice and easy around Lake Tahoe, and if conditions were right, he could let me maneuver the glider. Or, if I wanted a little adrenaline, we could do some tricks. I felt completely in control. For a while, I just sat and marveled at the crystalline blue of Lake Tahoe and enjoyed it from an angle few people get to experience.
After just a few minutes with the good people at SoaringNV in Minden, Nev., I knew I was in good hands.
My whole flight could have stayed this relaxing. But then something great happened. I got this amazing burst of confidence and courage. I flew the glider on my own! Then, I told Russell I was ready to do some tricks. How many people can say they flew upside down over Lake Tahoe? Well, at least one. In one flight, I went from the girl who doesn’t venture to the woman who does and loves it. In fact, I’ve taken lessons since this flight. Am I on the fast track to a glider pilot’s license? Not quite… but, I’m building up the confidence! If you are seeking relaxation or even a little adventure, you should take a glider ride at SoaringNV. They offer lessons, too! In fact, if you want a taste of what it’s like to soar on your own, you should try an introductory lesson. When you schedule in advance, Russell can teach you soaring basics in ground school. Then, with your instructor literally right behind you, get towed to 3,000 feet and try your hand at the stick. You get a log book with your first flight as an entry and even a discount off your second lesson. Anyone can put you in a glider, but SoaringNV gives you an experience you will never forget. Give them a call at 775-782-9595, or check out their website. Tell them Getaway Reno/Tahoe Magazine sent you! SoaringNV.com

Golf with a Kick!
BY JESSICA SCHNOLL
Welcome to the world of FootGolf, where golf meets soccer. One of the newest and fastest growing sports in the U.S., this sport has quickly made its way to the Carson Valley with the first course in Northern Nevada at Carson Valley Golf Course. Also brand new this summer is the FootGolf course at Eagle Valley Golf Course in Carson City. With a much easier learning curve than traditional golf, FootGolf expands the playability and accessibility of the course to a wide range of ages and abilities. Players play right alongside the normal golf holes, kicking soccer balls from separate tees to individual FootGolf greens, complete with a 21” cup large enough to practically sit in! Each hole has marked yardage and pars, just like in golf, along with all the standard rules and hazards such as sand bunkers. Rent a soccer ball from the Pro Shop or bring your own; just don’t forget to grab a ball marker, which is the size of a poker chip! If you don’t feel like walking the course, rent a golf cart at either location – perfect for carrying your favorite beverages to quench your thirst on a hot day. Unlike golf, most rounds of FootGolf can be played in about two hours, leaving plenty of time for other activities during the day. This sport is a fun way to get everyone involved for an afternoon on the course!

Genoa: Where History and Small Town Charm Meet BY TODD POTH
M
any visitors to the Reno/Tahoe area are surprised to find out that Nevada’s oldest town is located so close to this popular vacation spot. Nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevadas, Genoa has been the backdrop for many Hollywood movies including “The Shootist” with John Wayne and “Misery” with Kathy Bates. As Nevada’s first official established settlement, Genoa is a historic and scenic hotspot. It was founded in 1851, thirteen years before Nevada became a state. Unlike many other famous boom towns throughout the area, Genoa is still alive and thriving with museums, events, shopping, dining, golf and other fun and relaxing activities. Genoa was established as a permanent trading post by a group of Mormon traders and later became an important stop along the famed “Pony Express.” Mormon Station Memorial State Park and the Genoa Courthouse Museum celebrate this history, and a trip to Genoa isn’t complete without a visit to these two museums. Make sure you stop by the self-descriptive Pink house and Hanging Tree, both blasts from Genoa’s past. If history and ghosts are your thing, then you’ll want to check out the Genoa Historic Ghost tours, where you’ll learn about the past and possibly meet a ghost or two. Tours are offered daily Friday through Monday. 1862 David Walley’s Hot Springs Resort, which is set at the base of the beautiful and majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains, is known around the world for its healing hot springs mineral pools. The resort also offers full-service spa treatments, swimming, fine dining at 1862 Restaurant and more. David Walley’s has been around for over 150 years and visited by thousands, including such historical figures as Mark Twain and Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, the spa offers several mineral soaking hot tubs. No trip to Genoa would be complete without a stop at the Genoa Bar, Nevada’s oldest thirst parlor. Established in 1853, the Genoa Bar is practically a living museum. John Wayne and Clint Eastwood were both known to frequent Genoa Bar when they were in town, and Raquel Welch hung her bra on the wall. In fact, it’s still there—along with the dusty charm of the old west and a real jukebox that plays country classics.

If you happen to be in the area on the first Sunday of any month between May and October, make sure to check out Genoa's Sweet Sippin Sundays. This is Genoa’s take on the classic wine walk, where they offer a different, featured spirit and you can enjoy a leisurely stroll downtown while sampling various recipes. The last full weekend of September, which is the 27th and 28th this year, is reserved for the world-famous Candy Dance Faire. Over 300 craft and food vendors descend upon Genoa, making this one of the most popular events of the summer. If you are looking for small town charm without the annoying tourist traps, then you owe yourself a visit to the historic and scenic town of Genoa.

Summertime Patio Dining in Reno BY CARISSA OATLEY
It’s summertime in the Biggest Little City, and I can’t think of a better way to dine than by sitting outside in the gorgeous weather while enjoying some of the best cocktails and cuisine the city has to offer. Whether you are looking for breakfast, lunch or dinner, there is a place for everyone. From breweries to sushi, make sure you take some serious time on this vacation to enjoy one of our Getaway favorites! Located on the famous Riverwalk in downtown Reno, Wild River Grille has a patio which is friendly to all – including your four-legged friend! This contemporary restaurant is in the heart of Reno’s hippest new districts, right on the Truckee River itself, which makes for a beautiful dining experience. As you relax on the patio, you can hear the river rushing by or listen to complimentary music by some of Northern Nevada’s favorite musicians. The incredible hand-crafted cocktails feature fresh juices and liquor infusions, with a Happy Hour that is to die for. From perfectly-prepared steaks to Chef Joe Bells famous Plum Chipotle Salmon, this riverside patio is one you don’t want to miss.

If you’re looking to hop on the sushi craze, Reef Sushi & Sake offers diners a unique blend of not only sushi, but traditional Japanese cuisine with a Hawaiian style and spirit. Also located on the Riverwalk, Reno’s culinary hub, they have a fabulous selection of sakes and wine to enjoy with your meal – all while overlooking the famous Truckee River. One thing I didn’t expect was their all-you-can-eat option! At Old Granite Street Eatery, you will feel like you’ve stepped back in time. This classic building on South Sierra Street was erected in 1940, and is now home to a restaurant and patio that makes you feel at home. This “gathering place” places an emphasis on quality ingredients and looks to be a casual, affordable place for the community to share. With a rotating craft beer selection, hand crafted cocktails, and a menu that offers snack plates, small plates, and entrée plates, a meal on this old world patio is sensational. Good Mexican food is a must for every vacation, and as far as I am concerned, there is no better way to enjoy it than on a contemporary patio. In the newly renovated Midtown District, Mari Chuy’s Mexican Kitchen offers a patio overlooking historic Virginia Street, with trendy tables and roll up walls. This family-owned spot is run by its namesake, who you will often find in the kitchen or behind the bar. They serve up some of the best margaritas around, and not only classic but inventive Mexican cuisine. Sitting on this great patio with a taco and margarita is a great way to enjoy the hustle and bustle of Midtown. Also in the Midtown District is Silver Peak Restaurant & Brewery – and if you are looking for a view, this is one of the best places to find it! With the entire roof turned into a patio during the spring and summer months, this Reno staple will thrill you.
The breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, combined with tasty, fresh brewery cuisine and handcrafted, brewed in-house beer, make this destination a must for any vacationer. If you are interested in taking a tour make sure to call ahead and ask for one of the long time brewmasters – to date, they have produced over 60 different styles of beer! A second location can also be found in the historic and trendy Riverwalk District. The Stone House Café has an outdoor dining experience that locals have been raving about for years. You can enjoy this patio anytime for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The patio has different areas with their own charm, making you feel like you are in a European garden. Generations of the Abowd family have perfected the art of service, atmosphere, and dining indulgence. Some of the freshest salads, steaks, and seafood await you here – and breakfast is served all the way up to 4 p.m. daily.

I was inspired in college when I joined the Student Council Board of the Arts, and was able to be directly involved with the decision-making process for the shows our college would present in their arena. When I met my first concert promoter at 18 years old, I knew then that’s what I wanted to do. I never looked back. I’ve been doing entertainment and producing shows, concerts, and theatre all of my life. What are some of the goals you still have for your company? Our overarching goal of PRE is to bring shows to our market that aren’t your every day, run-of-the-mill, overplayed acts, but shows that have national appeal, a large fan-base, and a great live component. Talk about Bass Camp and the exciting shows you’re producing this summer. I’ve been a huge fan of EDM even before it was cool. I was promoting DJ’s in the
Northern Nevada region way back in the ‘90s, with shows like Paul Oakenfold and Tiësto before the genre really exploded. I remember my first show with Tiësto at Caesars Tahoe didn’t even sell-out; I think we did 1,200 people. Twelve years later, my last show with Tiësto filled Lawlor Event Center on campus at UNR. I was promoting Kaskade, BT, and Bad Boy Bill, in small clubs on the South Shore, and now these artists command huge fees and fill 10,000+ capacity arenas. I love seeing how far EDM has come. Bass Camp Festival was an all-day Electronic Dance Music (EDM) event that I produced in the Summer of 2013 in Lake Tahoe. The festival sold-out and “Bass Camp” took on a life of its own. We created Bass Camp Festival, Inc., which is dedicated solely to the music and culture of Electronic Dance Music. Our 2nd Annual Bass Camp Festival will be presented at the North Tahoe Regional Park in Tahoe Vista, Calif. on July 19. This will be a twelve-hour, all-day EDM event featuring DJ/Producers Datsik, Infected Mushroom, Candyland, Kill Paris, MartyParty from PANTyRAID, Flinch and a lot more. My goal is to take the Bass Camp brand international with open-air EDM festivals in mountain communities around the world. basscampfest.com

Retail Therapy: Unique Summer Shopping BY CARISSA OATLEY
I
nstead of spending the day on the water or biking the trails during your visit to Reno/Tahoe, go on a shopping spree! When you visit a new place, it’s always fun to discover local treasures and specialty items unique to the area. With our help, you’ll find everything from eclectic fashions and art to specialty food items and antiques, making these shops the perfect places to find a memorable souvenir or gift for someone you love.
Midtown, in central Reno, has a wide variety of businesses that make up a great place to spend the day. There are clothing shops such as Dressed Like That, where you can find the best retro and pin-up styles, and Never Ender for boutique-style clothing and accessories. Feel like a kid again at Happy Happy Joy Joy where the toys at this shop are for the young and old alike! At The Isles, not only can you enjoy tea in the traditional Celtic Tea House, they have the most unique Celtic jewelry and art – and even traditional clothing! Pick up records, DVDs, and music related items at Recycled Records, and jewelry and beads at Reno Bead Shop. Nevada Museum of Art is not just an art gallery – it is the only accredited art museum in the state. The museum offers an art experience, with a gift shop in the lobby for you to buy interesting souvenirs to take back home. I really enjoy spending time at the Melting Pot World Emporium and The Neon Dragonfly – they are some of the best eclectic boutiques around, with some of Reno’s coolest counter-culture items. While enjoying these one-of-a-kind retailers, make sure you visit one of the many coffee shops and cafés to refuel! In Historic Downtown Truckee, Calif., I love the always-present charm and beauty, especially in the warm summer

months. Not only are there numerous specialty stores and unique shops to explore, you also experience the gritty past and present of this historic railroad town. There are dozens of independently-owned and operated spots to visit, local art galleries, and one-of-a-kind gift shops. Pick up specialty foods at Tahoe Oil and Spice or Sweets Handmade Candies. If art is what you are looking for, Riverside Studios offers everything made from local artists, and La Galleria features art from different experiences around the world. There are plenty of boutique-style clothing stores to choose from, and you can even find locally-inspired jewelry stores and stained-glass works. This is well worth the trip from Reno, Lake Tahoe, or Carson Valley, and with several fantastic restaurants as well, you’ll want to make this day trip a priority! Experience the Past, Enrich the Present, Embrace the Future; this is the motto of Main Street Gardnerville, and shopping here is a truly adventurous and fun experience. Gardnerville is one of the best places for serious antiquing, with Quail Cottage Antiques, Frontier Antiques and Collectibles, Accolades Trophies, Engraving & Gifts and Cheshire Antiques all waiting for you to find a treasure to take home with you. I love to grab a glass or even a bottle of wine at Battle Born Wine and take a stroll through this main street shopping haven, visiting the antique dealers, fine art galleries, and jewelry stores. No trip is complete for me without a stop into Especially for You to pick up unique fashion finds, specialty items and gifts.
