Get the Creative Juices Flowing BY JENNA PALACIO
Fearlessly create your own masterpiece at new paint and sip studios that provide liquid courage and a laid back, artistic atmosphere for any occasion.
O
ne part wine bar and tap house, one part paint by numbers; a collection of innovative painting classes are popping up, offering a different take on indoor activities this season. While I’m not an artiste or painter of any sort, I am perfectly capable of ordering a drink and having a good time. Wanting to see what the buzz was all about, I found myself at Lake Tahoe Paint & Sip, a new studio in South Lake Tahoe. I came ready for whatever the evening class threw at me – including paint.
With paint and sip studios opening in Reno, Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley, it’s never been easier to try this unique form of entertainment and make a hand-crafted souvenir. This year, Paint & Sip Lake Tahoe is expanding to offer children’s workshops and Reno’s Picasso & Wine is opening a second location.
7 p.m. – I was greeted by friendly staff and escorted to a bar that could put a bistro to shame. Four beers on tap, countless bottled craft beers and a plethora of red, white and rosé wines were neatly arranged before me. “What would pair best with summoning the courage to create an actual painting in two hours?!” I thought. After a moment, I decided on a pint of hoppy Dead Guy Ale by Oregon’s Rogue Ales. 7:15 p.m. – Seated beneath contemporary track lights in the colorful studio, I took relief seeing everything I needed: a 16x20” canvas propped up on an easel, an arsenal of paint brushes, a palette of brightly colored blobs of acrylic paint, and an apron. Across from me was a small bachelorette party clinking glasses, some co-workers dishing office gossip, and a group of friends catching up. 7:30 p.m. – After several sips, I was feeling more at ease. Our instructor, an art student from the University of Nevada, Reno, began showing us how to create the background for what was going to be a grove of aspen trees. “Was it really this simple? Could these smears of yellow and red turn into a scenic painting?” I wondered. I carried on, driven by hope and a mild buzz. 8 p.m. – All fear of creating a sub-Kindergarten level piece of art vanished, and I was fearlessly painting vertical white stripes that would become my aspen trees, and exchanging Bob Ross puns about happy little trees with fellow artistes. It was time for another beer while the paint dried. 8:45 p.m. – The instructors circulated the room, giving tips and encouragement as we dotted on leaves and flicked details in the tree bark they showed us how to make. I couldn’t help sounding out with a “Ta –daaa!” when I finished. There’s a sense of satisfaction in taking on a new activity and signing your own painting. It’s no surprise the beverage-enhanced workshops are a popular way to get creative with family, friends and new acquaintances.

Soaring Over Lake Tahoe BY DIANE HANSEN PHOTOS SOARING NV
I
’m not going to call myself a daredevil, although GO sometimes I wishREAD I were one.WATCH My vacation stories are usually pretty light on the action, heavy on the hammocks. Would I like to do a deep dive at high altitude in Lake Tahoe? Absolutely! Have I gone beyond taking a beginning diving class in a swimming pool? No.
So, needless to say, I was a little nervous when I found myself considering going aloft in an aircraft with no engine. At first thought, flying in a glider seemed like an activity only for the adventurous in spirit or brave of heart. Yet after just a few minutes with the good people at SoaringNV in Minden, Nev., I knew I was in good hands. The professionals at SoaringNV really took their time getting me comfortable with my safety equipment, the glider itself and what I would be experiencing before I took off. Even though I would be sitting in front, Russell Holtz, an FAA-certified glider pilot instructor with over 10,000 glider flights in his stack of log books, would literally have my back, piloting the plane from the back seat. Suited up with the first parachute I have worn in my life, I was excited and ready to go. Russell explained the controls to me like I was a pilot in training. The excitement mounted as the tow plane pilot attached the tow line to the glider, started his own engine and began to take off. The glider followed the tow plane with ease. At the right moment, Russell let me pull the yellow knob for releasing the tow line. He told me I could have any kind of flight I wanted. We could take it nice and easy around Lake Tahoe, and if conditions were right, he could let me maneuver the glider. Or, if I wanted a little adrenaline, we could do some tricks. I felt completely in control. For a while, I just sat and marveled at the crystalline blue of Lake Tahoe and enjoyed it from an angle few people get to experience.
After just a few minutes with the good people at SoaringNV in Minden, Nev., I knew I was in good hands.
My whole flight could have stayed this relaxing. But then something great happened. I got this amazing burst of confidence and courage. I flew the glider on my own! Then, I told Russell I was ready to do some tricks. How many people can say they flew upside down over Lake Tahoe? Well, at least one. In one flight, I went from the girl who doesn’t venture to the woman who does and loves it. In fact, I've taken lessons since this flight. Am I on the fast track to a glider pilot's license? Not quite… but, I'm building up the confidence! If you are seeking relaxation or even a little adventure, you should take a glider ride at SoaringNV. They offer lessons, too! In fact, if you want a taste of what it's like to soar on your own, you should try an introductory lesson. When you schedule in advance, Russell can teach you soaring basics in ground school. Then, with your instructor literally right behind you, get towed to 3,000 feet and try your hand at the stick. You get a log book with your first flight as an entry and even a discount off your second lesson. Anyone can put you in a glider, but SoaringNV gives you an experience you will never forget. Give them a call at 775-782-9595, or check out their website. Tell them Getaway Reno/Tahoe sent you! SoaringNV.com

Camp Richardson Historic Resort
is an outdoor enthusiast’s mecca and a winter wonderland resort resting on the shores of South Lake Tahoe, with snowshoeing and cross country skiing access to some of the most popular trails and beaches in the area. Recently voted “Best Place to Cross Country Ski” by Tahoe locals, the sports center offers groomed and marked trails for the beginner to the expert, and is a great place to ski or snowshoe along the shores of the lake. Camp Richardson Resort offers a wide selection of skis and snowshoes, including youth and children’s sizes. The miles of bike trails from summer are magically changed to a beautiful white winter wonderland for skiing and snowshoeing. Stop in the Coffee & Confectionary Shop after a day of skiing or snowshoeing and indulge with a freshly made pastry, old-thyme candies, frothy latte or hot chocolate. Or, you can visit the General Store for a packed picnic lunch, sit-down lunch, snacks, drinks, and unique gifts and souvenirs. Enjoy a full-moon cross country ski before retiring to your historic

cabin or hotel room, or take a quick snowshoe down to The Beacon Bar & Grill and try your luck in the Snowshoe Cocktail Races taking place January 17, February 21 and March 21 starting at 7 p.m. Visit the website beacontahoe.com for more information. A local’s favorite, the lakefront Beacon Bar & Grill is open year-round, offering lunch and dinner throughout the week, and brunch through dinner on the weekends. The Beacon’s happy hour is Tuesday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Mondays from 3 p.m. to close and all day Sundays, giving you plenty of time to stop in and cheer for your favorite NFL team. The Beacon not only offers dining with one of the best views on the lake, it is also home to a local sensation called the “Rum Runner,” a tasty concoction of rum and fruit juices with just enough secret ingredients to keep you wanting more. Wild Wednesdays offer Rum Runners for $5 all day long, and there is live music on Friday and Saturday nights. For year-end celebrations or corporate dinners, the
restaurant can accommodate up to 30 people. Reservations are normally not required, so feel free to stop in and enjoy the eclectic, tasty menu, cozy atmosphere, and remarkable views. If you have a large party, call 530-541-0630 for reservations. Camp Richardson Resort is a must-do on your Lake Tahoe list, not only for the beauty and winter activities, but because it is one of the few historic sites around the lake where guests can experience Lake Tahoe to the fullest. Early 1920s cabins, a historic hotel and various historic outbuildings take you back to an old Tahoe age of log-style architecture, huge rock fireplaces, and a quiet serenity so you can enjoy the beauty of Lake Tahoe. If you go, contact Camp Richardson Historic Resort at 530-541-1801 or visit them online. The resort is located on Highway 89 toward Emerald Bay approximately three miles from the “Y” where 89 and South Lake Tahoe Boulevard intersect. camprichardson.com

here’s no better way to experience a culture than to sit down and enjoy a meal with the people. As someone who enjoys eating out, I take this very seriously by seeking out restaurants that are preparing dishes with sincere authenticity, offering us, as customers, a window into their worlds. Global cuisine isn't the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about dining in Reno/Tahoe. But, if you dig just beneath the surface, and read this article, you will find some dining destinations featuring fabulous food from around the world. When exploring the global dining options in Reno/ Tahoe, you’ll definitely find the familiar flavors of Thai, Indian, and Chinese. But, you’ll also find Basque cuisine, which is unique to our region, Reno/Tahoe's own brand of AYCE Sushi, and some very delicious regional Mexican, Taiwanese, and Vietnamese restaurants too. So when it comes time to eat, we’ve put together this great guide to help expand your horizons with our picks for spots with serious international flavors.
MEXICAN >> El Adobe (Midtown Reno) Located in the thriving Midtown District, El Adobe has long been a local favorite. Along with the bottomless basket of chips and salsa, the combination platters with their famous chile rellenos, tacos, and enchiladas are legendary, and so are their grilled fish tacos. eladobecafe.com Los Gallos (Downtown Reno) Los Gallos Taqueria sits on Virginia Street directly across the street from Downtown Reno’s largest hotels, and what they may lack in ambiance, they more than make up for in authentic flavor. If you’re feeling the winter chill, there’s nothing better than a piping hot bowl of their posole, a rich, complex stew made with pork and hominy. Other favorites here include the ceviche tostadas, al pastor or asada tacos, and of course, the delicious array of fresh-made salsas to go along with their house-made chips. yelp.com/biz/los-gallos-taqueria-reno T's Mesquite (Incline Village) The aromas in the air outside of T’s are intoxicating, and once inside, the massive mesquite rotisserie will have you mesmerized as it slowly turns beautiful whole chickens and tri-tips. That tender meat is served to guests right off the spit either in tacos, burritos, or on a plate to be enjoyed with their fresh red or green salsas and sides. Yelpers rave about
the black beans and the ever-popular cucumber salad. But all of these side dishes, and their marinades, are from family recipes, so you know your food is made with love. Just remember, cash only! yelp.com/biz/ts-mesquite-rotisserie-incline-village FRENCH >> Beaujolais Bistro (Reno Riverwalk District) In the charming Powning neighborhood, right alongside the Truckee River, Chef Bill Gilbert is continuing his 10-year legacy with this cozy and comfortable French bistro. Chef Gilbert uses classic French techniques to create seasonally inspired bistro fare with a modern flair, highlighting the best local products available. Whether you’re a fan of the classic steak frites, a perfectly seared duck breast, wild game or beautiful charcuterie, you’ll find something to enjoy on this menu, along with a list of inspired libations and carefully selected wines to go with it. beaujolaisbistro.com La Ferme (Genoa) Since 1998, Gilles and Chef Yves has been creating elegant country-style French cuisine at La Ferme, a romantic, quirky, and intimate restaurant in the guest house of the historic Pink House in Genoa, Nev. Chef Yves cuisine takes inspiration from the highest quality local meats and freshest produce available, and on the menu you’ll find dishes that hit all the high points of the season. lafermegenoa.com

ITALIAN >> La Vecchia (Reno) For more than 15 years, Alberto Gazzola, a trained chef born in Italy, has been serving up his takes on Northern Italian cuisine. Growing up in the Northern Italian town of La Vecchia Varese, he learned to make fresh pasta, wood-fired pizza, and beautiful meat and seafood dishes, all reflecting the long-established culinary traditions of Italy. Locals rave about the ravioli, which changes seasonally along with the perfect pizza and classic carbonara, which are hard to beat. lavecchiareno.com Johnny's (Reno) Since 1966, the Cassinari family has been serving Italian favorites with charm, class, and impeccable service in a romantic fine-dining setting just west of Downtown Reno. Decades have defined signature specialties here, and the Parmesan Crusted Petrale Sole is a clear standout. Be sure and save room for dessert because the Florentine Cup and the Sogno Negro, paired with a glass of port, is simply perfect. johnnysristorante.com Fasta Pasta (South Lake Tahoe) Hidden inside a convenience store in South Lake Tahoe you’ll find Fasta Pasta, a one-man operation turning out perfect pasta for those hankering for something hot and hearty. You pick your pasta, the ingredients you want, one of his homemade sauces like pesto cream or spicy tomato, and Ivan will whip it up and send you on your way with about a pound of pasta perfection to enjoy. Just remember, cash only! yelp.com/biz/fasta-pasta-south-lake-tahoe Scusa (South Lake Tahoe) According to 314 yelpers and four stars on Yelp, Scusa is a sure thing when it comes to Italian fine dining at Lake Tahoe. Their Eggplant Parmesan is tender perfection, covered with melted homemade mozzarella and topped with a well-seasoned red sauce that must have been simmering for hours, while the linguine and clams are coveted by diners from all over. Samurai (South Lake Tahoe) Samurai has been slicing and dicing fresh sushi in South Lake Tahoe since 1984. Owner Aje greets guests as they arrive, and is proud to provide the personal touch that separates Samurai from the rest. If you like sashimi or nigiri sushi, the Chirashi bowl is a sure thing, featuring chef’s choice of fish and other garnishes served over sushi rice. Thai Lotus (Reno) Thai Lotus, a family-owned and operated business in South Reno, has sensational service, craveable classics like curries, Pad Thai and Papaya Salad, and an ever-changing specials board featuring authentic flavors and dishes you won’t find anywhere else. Must try items are the Thai Style Ribs, slow cooked in a sweet and savory broth, and served with a tart vinegar sauce and steamed rice; Massaman Curry with braised beef and potatoes; and the Spicy Spicy Catfish, which is wok-fried with eggplant, bell peppers, and spicy Thai green peppercorns. thailotusreno.com
Drunken Monkey (Truckee) As the son of a well-known Japanese sushi chef, and with more than 20 years of experience with Asian and French cuisine, Chef Sam Okamoto has created Drunken Monkey in Truckee. The menu here is Japanese, offering traditionally prepared sushi and showcasing the flavors of the country with innovative noodle dishes, donburi rice bowls, and “tapas” or small plates, which can all be shared. The staff can guide you through the menu, but the best way to enjoy this experience is “omakase,” which means “I’ll leave it to you,” otherwise known as chef’s choice. drunkenmonkeysushi.com

Orchid's Authentic (South Lake Tahoe) Four stars from more than 430 yelpers say Orchid’s Authentic Thai is more than just the best Thai restaurant at the Lake; it’s one of the best Thai restaurants in the entire Reno/Tahoe area. For years, customers have been warming up from the winter cold with their famous Tom Yum, which is a hot and sour soup made with lemongrass, tomato, mushrooms, and onions. This is, of course, only the prelude to their house special Pumpkin curry, with tender pumpkin and Thai basil simmered in a spicy red curry. orchidstahoe.com

Chest is Best We have great news for those who want to capture HD video without a camera protruding from their helmets. GoPro has released a chest-mounted camera harness for you to get all the footage you can handle, without the bulk or liability of attaching the camera to a pole. You can find the “Chesty” at Scheel’s for $39.
Multi-taskable Layers Let your apparel take you from lift to the lodge in style. For the guys, the Burton Griffin Shirt for $88 is your trump card with its street-style design, water-resistant material and articulated hood. When I go on vacation, one of the first things on my mind is relaxation. I love it in nearly all forms…laying out on the beach, reading a good book, or sleeping in. Perhaps my most cherished method to decompress is spending a day at the spa. You, lucky traveler, are in a spa lover’s paradise. This area hosts a plethora of well-known resort-spa combos including the Spa Toscana at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino, the Atlantis Spa at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, the North Lake Spa at the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe and many, many more.

In addition, there are a few local stops that should be on your spa day must-do list: BioSpirit Day Spa in South Lake Tahoe truly embraces the beauty and activities the area has to offer. After a day on the slopes with my limbs feeling a bit like Jell-O, I booked their Hot Legs Massage. This sports massage, specifically designed for feet and legs, combines warm stones and oil with stretching and restorative massage techniques. Topped off with a nice slather of menthol gel (along with a tube for me to keep), this treatment completely rejuvenated my sore muscles, leaving me ready to head to the mountain the very next day. Folks also rave about the Fire and Ice Facial where they use botanical products to heat the skin, bringing blood to the surface, then a cooling gel and chilled stones to encourage new cell development. “Our Fire and Ice Facial is a refreshing way to heal the skin and create soft, smiling faces in the process,” says Theresa Bertrand, owner of BioSpirit Day Spa. “We love to help people realize the strength their own body possesses and the ability it has to heal itself.” massagetahoe.com

After letting them steep for a bit, she presented a tray of treatments smelling of my favorite dessert flavors—

vanilla soak, pumpkin scrub, almond glow mask and a warm vanilla sugar candle that melts down to massage oil. She finished the treatment with a new polish called Dazzle Dry designed to take less than five minutes to dry completely. This, combined with the infamous Pink Drink, was a true treat for me and my feet. soaklounge.com If you’re looking for a good body detox, try the Goddess Body Wrap offered by the Goddess Repair Shop located inside Balance Health Solutions in Sparks. After changing into my swimsuit, owner Chris Kelly started this treatment with a 20-minute session in the infrared sauna. Then, it was off to the body wrap room. Kelly applied a special lotion with a subtle cinnamon scent and got to work with the actual wrap. She started with my torso, then wrapped my arms and legs separately. “The combination of the lotion triggering the toxins to leave the fat cells, then the light compression, causes the body to drain the lymphatic channels and eliminate the toxins,” Kelly explains. “We have folks lose anywhere from four to 14 inches in one treatment.” While the active ingredients went to work, I took a nap and after an hour awoke feeling completely refreshed. goddessrepairshopreno.com In Carson City, the Bodhi Tree Center for Healing Arts offers massage therapy by students studying the art. While it may not embody the typical spa ambiance, this school-type setting carries a special energy with soon-to-be therapists eager to practice their skill. “We bring all of our talent and creativity to providing the best bodywork learning experience possible,” says John Thorpe, owner and instructor at Bodhi Tree Center for Healing Arts. And, this hard work was reflected in the one-hour massage I recently received in which the therapist focused on my neck and back, as requested. I’ve enjoyed a lot of massages in my day, and if I didn’t know he was a student, I would’ve guessed that he’d been practicing for years. thebodhitreecenter.com

Nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, 1862 David Walley’s Hot Springs and Day Spa is one of my favorite daytrip getaways. With picturesque views, this year-round retreat features hot springs and mineral pools that range in temperatures. The day spa is one of the few with a Vichy Shower, and this massage treatment is unlike any other. The enriched mineral water is sprayed through a series of showerheads, and as I laid on a waterproof massage bed, the sounds and sensation created a calming, almost meditative, experience. After the water treatment, the therapist used an exfoliating body scrub that was simply delightful. davidwalleys-resort.com So, relax, enjoy, get pampered and in true traveling fashion, don’t forget to tip for the treatment.
