Plan Your GETAWAY

I grew up in Orange County before attending the University of Southern California. After graduation, I worked as an entertainment reporter/TV Host interviewing celebrities on the red carpet for People Magazine, Hollywood.com, and Us Weekly to name a few. But, my true passion has always been traveling. I’m blessed to have had the opportunity to travel and explore the different food and cultures around the world, and even received my frequent flyer number at only six months old. I’m so lucky to call San Diego home with my wonderful husband Nick as well as our daughter Georgia Rose who turned 1 on April 1st. Summer has always been my favorite season, but I especially love to visit the Del Mar Track, cheer on the Padres and enjoy the beautiful sunsets with my family.

JEFF KRAPF >>>>>>>> I like to think of myself as having personality, personality, personality! I love to try anything and everything at least once – sometimes twice. Born in Central California, I moved to San Diego in 2000 and traveled to every major city in the country at least twice as a TV Host for multiple networks and local TV shows. I’ve been a brand spokesman for some of the biggest brands in the world, and emceed for some of the biggest sports and lifestyle events in the U.S., such as the Super Bowl, the Final Four and our very own San Diego Padres baseball team. With summer now staring us in the face, people from all over the world are flocking to this wonderful city of ours. The stadium for Padres games will be rockin’, Balboa Park will be flooded with visitors and the beaches will be packed.

Here’s a quick tip - if you’re headed down to the beaches think of an alternative way to travel once you get there. You can rent bicycles, Segways or maybe street legal golf carts. These are great ways to beat the tough parking problems most will face and a great way to enjoy getting around the area. See you at the beach!

Oceanside Carlsbad

Welcome to beautiful Sunny San Diego! Nothing screams summer more than San Diego with nearly perfect weather and over 70 miles of coastline. Whether you are out enjoying a day on, in Swammis or next to the water, catching a baseball game at Petco Park, enjoying live music outdoors, or going Cardiff Reef to festivals and fairs, it’s warm enough to enjoy outdoor activities — just remember to wear your Del Mar sunscreen! While you’re visiting, the first thing to do is start thinking like a local. San Diego is made Scripps up of small surrounding cities with their own distinct personalities, and knowing the difference between Pacific Beach Mission Beach downtown and say, Carlsbad, can determine where you want to go and what you want to do. It may sound a little Ocean Beach confusing, but don’t worry, we have maps in the back of the magazine and videos highlighting specific towns so you can start exploring like a local in no time. With 70 miles of beautiful coastline and a wide variety of terrain (think beaches, Sunset Cliffs deserts, and mountains), it can be difficult to decide where to start. Here’s a quick and easy guide to help you explore this Imperial Beach amazing area!

San Diego City Map

South County

Pacific Beach (aka “PB”): We sometimes refer to it as Party Beach because of its fun bars and restaurants which are perfect for party hopping.

Ocean Beach (aka “OB”): Filled with beach bungalows and cottages, you’ll find a relaxed bohemian crowd who prides themselves in the variety of small businesses and locally-owned establishments. OB’s waterfront is known as Dog Beach where dogs can enjoy being leash-free 24 hours a day.

Mission Bay: This is where you’ll find Sea World San Diego as well as walking paths, picnics, bonfires, and beach volleyball. There’s also plenty of fun for families with small children both in the water and on the beach no big waves to worry about here! La Jolla: This is an upscale area where you will find luxurious hotels, spas, shopping, fine dining, and amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s also home to the Birch Aquarium.

Watch Pacific Beach Here!

Hillcrest: A friendly neighborhood with numerous locally-owned businesses like boutiques, bars, clubs, restaurants and thrift stores. It’s also supportive of the gay and lesbian community and has a high population of LGBT. Watch La Jolla Here!

Mission Beach: Home to the Giant Dipper, the historic wooden rollercoaster built in 1925, and Belmont Park, our version of the East Coast’s Coney Island. Old Town: The birth place of California, it’s filled with restaurants, shopping, and numerous free museums. It’s a great place to really learn about the history of San Diego.

Coronado Island: An affluent resort city which is home to Hotel Del, one of theoldest and largest of all wooden buildings in California and considered a national and California historical landmark. Coronado Beach was rated #1 in the US in 2012 according Dr. Beach, and Orange Avenue is our favorite place to take a stroll. There are also more retired admirals per square foot on the island than anywhere in the world. Balboa Park: The park offers 1,200 acres of beautiful open spaces, gardens, museums, theaters, amazing architecture, and of course, the world famous San Diego Zoo.

Watch Mission Beach Here!

Point Loma (also includes Shelter Island and Harbor Island): This is a great spot to go sport fishing or to explore the beautiful marina filled with “super yachts.” It’s also home to the Cabrillo National Monument. Mission Valley (aka Hotel Circle): Offers great shopping at the Fashion Valley Mall and is the place to watch the San Diego Chargers play football at Qualcomm Stadium.

North County Carlsbad: A family-focused community that is home to LEGOLAND® and the Flower Fields. It boasts a vibrant downtown area called Carlsbad Village filled with great shops and restaurants.

Downtown/GasLamp: Historic district in the heart of Downtown with plenty of restaurants, nightclubs, lounges and live music venues. You’ll find Petco Park, home of the San Die go Padres baseball team, and the Convention Center located downtown.

Watch Carlsbad Here!

Oceanside: It’s the most northern tip of San Diego before heading into Camp Pendleton, with a fun marina to explore. Encinitas (also includes neighboring areas Leucadia and Cardiff by the Sea): An area of relaxed surf cities with a great variety of beaches, cool and funky shops and boutiques along Highway 101, a vibrant surf culture, yogi’s doing yoga, vegetarian restaurants and boho-chic hipsters. Del Mar & Solana Beach: Casual and beachy towns with upscale shopping and restaurants. Del Mar is also home to the San Diego County Fair and the Del Mar Races during spring and2014 summer months. SAN DIEGO 7theSUMMER | GETAWAY

Chula Vista: The location of the Sleep Train Amphitheatre, the U.S Olympic Training Center, and the Living Coast Discovery Center – perfect for a family outing.

There are a few public transportation options to help you get around to all of these great places. You can ride The COASTER, which travels along the coast from San Diego to Oceanside, and hop on the trolleys to get around downtown San Diego. While you’re here, visit our blog at SanDiego.PlanMyGetaway.Com or check out our event calendar at GetawaySanDiego.com to stay up-to-date on where to eat, stay and play! Also, keep an eye out as you read the magazine for chances to watch a cool and interesting video about something fun to do, a great place to shop, or an amazing place to dine. All you have to do is scan a code with your smartphone, iPad or iTouch to enjoy an interactive experience with our Getaway Hosts Margi and Jeff while reading our magazine. City by the Sea

An affluent beach city 20 miles north of San Diego, Del Mar is Spanish for “by the sea” because of its location on the beautiful Pacific Ocean. It’s also home to the world-famous Del Mar Racetrack located on the Del Mar Fairgrounds, where events such as the Del Mar Races and the San Diego County Fair take place. Del Mar is a premier stop for sight-seeing, and is also treasured for the unique experiences it has to offer. A good first stop is the fairgrounds, which has something fun to offer every week from antique shows and bingo to pug parties and more. It is also known for its annual events like the San Diego County Fair and of course, live horse-racing. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club (DMTC), beloved tradition of horse racing in San Diego, began on July 3, 1937, with Hollywood star Bing Crosby standing at the gates collecting tickets from many Hollywood elites, welcoming them to “where the turf meets the surf at Del Mar.” Through its 75 years, the racetrack at Del Mar has come a long way, with increasing purses, better quality racing, and a jump from 15,000 patrons on its first opening day to well over 46,000 in 2012. Today, it’s a place where you step onto world-renown grounds to wager on some of the fastest horses in America, and enjoy a fun-filled day for the entire family. There are numerous seating options with dress codes, so whether you want to dress casual

and enjoy the infield on the track with your family in a ‘fair’ type setting, or dress up with a fancy hat in the turf club, every seat has a fun-filled packed day. The San Diego County Fair, called The Fab Fair this year and held at the fairgrounds from June 7 until July 6, is an annual event which began in 1946. Live music, exhibits, games and food will fill your summer day as this year’s fair celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Beatles first visit to America, ushering in the “British Invasion” which influenced several generations of music and pop culture to this day. If you want to slow things down and take in the area’s breathtaking sights, a fantastic place to visit is Torrey Pines State Beach. This beach is a natural reserve located within San Diego city limits and is one of the most scenic stretches of land on our Southern California coast. You can keep things slow and take a stroll down San Diego’s historical Highway 101, which follows the route that approximates the old trail linking Spanish missions, pueblos and presidios from 1683 to 1834. Wander along the Camino Del Mar strip and find yourself at Pacifica Del Mar Restaurant, located in the Del Mar Plaza, where we recommend a cold beer on their outdoor patio which overlooks

With 70 miles of beautiful coastline from San Diego to Oceanside, you can relax in the sun or cool off in the water whether you’re here for a romantic getaway or a fun family vacation.

OCEANSIDE BEACH Oceanside beach is home to the beautiful Oceanside Pier, which provides a great view of the ocean and beach. Add in the playground on the sand and the restaurants nearby, like Harney Sushi with their delicious offerings, and it’s the perfect beach for you and your whole family.

PACIFIC BEACH

At PB, as it’s known around here, it’s Spring Break year round. It’s also a favorite for young adults who can party hop along the numerous oceanfront bars like SD Tap Room, where you can drink quality craft beer and dine on delicious food. While you’re here, you can rent a bike, roller blade, skateboard or walk along the three-mile boardwalk. It’s the perfect place to soak up the beautiful crowd and California lifestyle. Watch a video about SD Tap Room!

MISSION BEACH This beach feels like a party! It’s right next to Belmont Park, a small beachfront amusement park, and has a variety of food vendors. You can enjoy a picnic on the grass, and walk or skate along the sidewalks. Add in the beach accessory stores and rental shops nearby, and this is a great place to spend the whole day with the family.

SUNSET CLIFFS

Watch a video about Mission Beach!

Don’t come here expecting traditional sandy beaches. The name says it all; these are rocky cliffs located above the Pacific Ocean with a fantastic view of the sunset. This place is great for anyone looking to kick back and enjoy the view. But remember – these are steep cliffs, so make sure to obey the signs and stay on the designated paths!

LA JOLLA COVE This beach has picturesque rocks you can stand on to watch the waves splashing, and small caves near the water. This is a great place for snorkeling, but not for surfing. It’s also a short walk from the Children’s Pool where you can usually see seals in their natural habitat resting on the beach. To truly experience the cove, let the folks at Everyday California take you on a kayak or snorkeling tour! everdaycalifornia.com

Beach Safety

WATCH

GO

By: Carianne Steinman Contribution by Sherry Rosner Special Thanks to Krista Johnson

Although our beaches are tons of fun, any outdoor activity has its risks. The same things that make the Pacific Ocean beautiful – its size, waves, and wildlife – can also create some hazards. But don’t worry; there are plenty of ways to stay safe!

RIP CURRENTS

Did you know that roughly 80% of lifeguard rescues at the beach are due to rip currents? If you do find yourself caught in a rip current, don’t try to swim directly towards the shore – this will tire you out. Instead, you need to swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. You can then safely swim back to shore.

GETAWAY TIPS Check if dogs are allowed on your beach before you go, and please do not leave them in a hot car!

Check the daily weather forecast for the UV index. It is often overcast at the beaches, but the UV index can be higher than normal at those times.

Pay attention to the signs of swim or surf specific areas.

Pay attention to the flags.

You can check the local surf report by calling 619-221-8824 or visiting surflook.com.

Wear hats and sunglasses.

LIFEGUARD TIPS The ocean is a shared space - flags are there to separate swimmers from surfers. Surfers might not see you and run into you with their boards, so please be mindful of where you are at all times. Use fins on your feet to help if you are out on a board or swimming.

If you are out with a boogie board and get caught in the rip current, do not abandon the board. You will get tired and could possibly drown. While out on the water, give your kids something on the beach to focus on in case they drift too far away from you (for example: a large beach umbrella).

LIVING ANIMALS Jellyfish… if you get stung, remember to not touch it and to put vinegar on it. Stingrays… it will sting (hence their name), but try to stay calm to keep the pain from intensifying. Treat the area with a lot of hot water as soon as possible. Since it can get infected, urgent care could be your best bet.

13 SUMMER 2014

Sharks… yes, they are out there, but they usually don’t come close to shore. Always be aware of your surroundings and don’t venture too far out into the ocean. Dolphins… they love to play in the waves just like we do! You will more than likely see many of these friendly creatures while enjoying our beautiful beaches. Take some time to enjoy watching them. Owners Tim and Michelle Hanley do everything they can to give you a great experience, and recently we had a chance to catch up with them to find out more about Sail San Diego.

EXPLORE Q: What is your background/experience with sailing/being on the water? A: Tim got into sailing on both coasts. The first time he was on a sailboat was in San Francisco Bay, where his father was a shared owner on a sailboat. His mom and stepfather had power boats in the Chesapeake Bay. They also had a sailing dinghy and he seemed to always be in it. A few years after college, Tim lived in Brigantine, N.J., a barrier island just north of Atlantic City. He had a small sailboat there and sailed most weekends. Brigantine wasn’t island enough so he moved to St. John Virgin Islands. He lived in quite a few places in the Caribbean and spent over 12 years there; half of the time doing underwater photography or diving, the other half running sail boats in the British Virgin Islands, St. Martin and Down Island. Then, he was running sailboats in the Mediterranean for a couple of years. Tim lived in Encinitas for a short time back in the ‘90s and knew that if he ever moved back to the states, it would be in San Diego. Michelle got into large power boats up in the Seattle area working for some of the more expensive brokerages and boat manufacturers (we’re talking million dollar yachts here). She worked for Frasier yachts, and the Builder Horizon yachts. Surprisingly enough we met at the boat show in Miami, and our first date was on Valentine’s Day 10 years ago.

INDOOR KART RACING

ARRIVE & DRIVE

Q: How long has Sail San Diego been around? A: Sail San Diego has been around since 1988. We are the fourth owners of the business, and have had it going on eight years [this past] Easter. Q: Why did you decide to start your own sailing company? Is it a husband/wife team? A: Yes, it’s a husband and wife team. We bought the business because Michelle was looking for a new challenge and this company came up for sale which I (Tim) have done a few sales for. That way, Michelle could combine her boating background and her Nordstrom sales background. We have roughly eight captains we call to do the trips; most of them have varying backgrounds from the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Tahoe. The main characteristics we look for are super upbeat, friendly sailors.

ADULTS AND JUNIORS 48” AND UP

Q: What’s the best part about having your own sailing company? A: It’s important to us how the customers are treated, what we can offer them, and how we can help make their day special. We want to stay a smaller company, that way we can treat people like people not like just another number.

To find out more about Sail San Diego, scan the QR code with your smartphone, iPad, or iTouch and watch a short video as Getaway Hosts Margi and Jeff enjoy a sailing adventure! You can also contact them at 619.297.7426 or email them at info@sailsandiego.com.

While you’re visiting our sensational city this summer, a visit to the downtown area is a must. First stop? Petco Park, home to our world-famous major league baseball team the San Diego Padres. Opened in 2004, this 42,445 seat venue is an open-air ballpark, with features such as various restaurants, specialty areas including two new breweries, and a new audio system which includes updated speakers throughout the park. You will also catch sweeping views of the Coronado Bridge and the San Diego Bay front.

EXPLORE Petco Park is located on Park Boulevard between Seventh and Tenth avenues in the heart of downtown, but there is so much more happening here than just great baseball. It’s wise to make a day of your downtown adventure! Since parking and the one-way streets can be a challenge, we suggest you make your downtown journey on foot or a rented bicycle so you won’t miss what we have to offer in the nooks and crannies of downtown. You can rent a bicycle at Bike Revolution (522 Sixth Ave.) where they can set you up on a cruiser for the day for only $22.00. If you want someone else to do the pedaling, take a tour with VIP Pedi Cab (1434 Island Ave.), where you can easily take in the sights and history of downtown on one of their many one-anda-half hour narrated bicycle tours. Enjoy being pedaled through the downtown streets to prominent areas such as The Gaslamp Quarter, Seaport Village and The North Embarcadero. The Gaslamp Quarter is 16-and-a-half blocks of historical neighborhood, and is the sight of numerous entertainment venues, restaurants and nightlife settings. Its period of development began in 1867 when the land was bought by Alonzo Horton in hopes of creating a new city by the bay. The name “The Gaslamp Quarter” is a reference to the gas lamps common in San Diego in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. You’ll find four of these gas lamps at the intersection of Market and Fifth Street to evoke this time period. Step into Exclusive Collections Fine Art Gallery for a look at seven uniquely gifted artist’s paintings and glass sculptures, or stop by The Chuck Jones Gallery to catch glimpses of his Warner Brothers animated pieces. You’ll also find work from Charles Schultz of The Peanuts comic strip and a tribute to Dr. Suess. If you follow Fifth Street south to its end, you’ll run into the Martin Luther King Promenade, an engaging paved walking or riding path filled with San Diego scenery and quotes from Dr. King himself. You can follow this path right to the well-known Seaport Village. Seaport Village houses over 70 shops, galleries and eateries and is laid out on 90,000 square feet of bay front property. This outdoor village extravaganza includes a historical working carousel, free live music daily from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and a different concert every Sunday. If you’re lucky, you may just catch the sword swallower or the fire-eater who makes an appearance on Fridays and Saturdays. Seaport Village is a great little escape to shop or relax by the water. If you head west on the path alongside the Bay, which is a short 15 minute walk or five minute bicycle ride, you will find yourself at The North Embarcadero. The North Embarcadero is a great place to stroll along the water and sightsee, or to check out the many historical ships, including the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier. It’s the longest serving naval aircraft carrier which is also open for tours. The Midway boasts 35 exhibits spanning its 47 year history. You’ll also find The Maritime Museum of San Diego housed on a collection of ships including The Star of India, the oldest active sailing ship. The museum includes six historical ships and two submarines, all open for viewing. Finally, when the night has turned late and you need fuel for your body, time isn’t an issue at Brian’s 24 located on Sixth Street. They serve delicious food 24/7 from a giant menu filled with a true variety of choices. Known as “The Restaurant that Never Sleeps,” you’ll find this place hopping because the tasty helpings at Brian’s 24 are generous and the workers treat you with care. When it comes to a visit to San Diego, a foray into the downtown area is filled with fun and never-ending adventure!

CORONADO: Ristorante Coronado,

1300 Orange Avenue, Suite 200, 619.522.0946

530 N. Coast Hwy 101 760.634.2365

Located on the charming island of Coronado, you’ll find the restaurant situated above busy Orange Avenue offering views of the ocean and Point Loma. They also have a fantastic dog-friendly patio with a roaring outdoor fireplace, perfect for an evening dining under the stars. Inside the restaurant, you’ll find the elegant dining room features a beautiful cascading wall-to-wall waterfall, stunning chandeliers, a martini lounge and a piano bar.

The original restaurant, which opened in 1994 in downtown Encinitas, instantly became a success. They recently reopened at a new, larger location in Leucadia with renovations. When you walk in the door, you’ll be welcomed by the smell of the authentic Florentine wood burning brick oven. Sit inside and enjoy the dining room or the piano bar, or sit outside on their dog-friendly patio with a view of the historic coast Highway 101 and the trains passing by in this beachy, laid-back town.

GETAWAY TIP: Parking can be difficult in this area so we suggest taking advantage of the underground parking garage, which is free for two hours with validation.

GETAWAY TIP: Ask to check out the wine cellar, and sit at the bar to enjoy front row access to a live piano player.

WE SUGGEST: Starting with the Bruschetta con Prosciutto e Bufala and a Robertini Martini. For an entrée Grigliata di Pesce; grilled jumbo prawn stuffed with calamari, crab and scallop finished with a Torta Della Nonna; pastry filled with lemon crème paired with a glass of lemoncello.

WE SUGGEST: Tartara Di Tonna; Fresh ahi tuna, cucumbers, avocado and citrus to start, followed by Tagliata Di Manzo Con Polenta; black angus filet served over polenta for your entrée and finished with Tiramisu; layers of lady fingers dipped in espresso and an Espresso martini.

ALSO IN CARLSBAD: Cucina Italiana,

CARLSBAD: Vigilucci’s Seafood & Steakhouse,

2943 State Street, 760.434.2500

3878 Carlsbad, 760.434.2580

In the heart of the Carlsbad village, this intimate venue gives off the feeling that Nona (“Italian grandma”) is back in the kitchen preparing her dishes with love. It’s a great place to stop by for lunch or dinner while doing your shopping along State Street, visiting antique stores and other neighboring boutique shops in the village.

This stunning location overlooks the Pacific Ocean, offering a great spot to enjoy the day, take in the beautiful sunset and to people-watch as they walk along Highway 101. It doesn’t matter if you are sitting in the bar, dining room or outdoor patio, you’re sure to have a great seat where you can enjoy an incredible feast for your eyes, your stomach and your soul.

GETAWAY TIP: On Wednesday’s during the summer, there’s a street fair along State Street between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. where you can pick up fresh produce, and arts and crafts for a unique gift idea. Give yourself a little more time to find parking since State Street between Carlsbad Village and Grand Ave is closed off. WE SUGGEST: Start with the Antipasto della Casa with calamari, the bruschetta or the variety of meats and cheeses. For Dinner we love their Pappardelle Con Funghi E Capesante; homemade wide ribbon pasta with porcini, shiitake, portobello, field mushrooms and pan-seared diver scallops in a white truffle and brandy cream sauce. For dessert a Cannoli; Sicilian hard shell pastry filled with ricotta and chocolate chips. 21 SUMMER 2014 | GETAWAY SAN DIEGO

WE SUGGEST: Start your meal with the Carpaccio Di Bue Orignale; thinly sliced raw prime filet mignon with arugula and shaved parmesan, followed with the Agnello Del Colorado; lamb chop served on mushroom saffron risotto. Le Papagayo By Hannah Johnston

Leucadia’s Le Papagayo is as famous around Encinitas as its surfer town reputation. It’s nestled in a sweet little spot right off the 101 and should be added to your “must try” list if you’re ever in the area. It’s hard to say whether the food or the energy makes you come back for more, because truth be told they are both addicting. Rarely have we come across a restaurant so alive and full of laughter, which also pulls off a diverse menu of food cooked to perfection. To start with, the environment is every bit as cozy as your favorite local bar. The main room has close tables and killer bands that play nightly for a crowd of all ages. If you’re looking for something a little quieter but still want to hear the music, there are dining areas just off the main room that offer more privacy and seating areas for big parties. No matter where you choose to sit, the walls throughout Le Papagayo are painted in bright colors and dressed with fun paintings (usually of musicians). The outdoor patio is another area especially nice for brunch.

They are open morning through night and have a wide range of breakfast, lunch, happy hour, and dinner items. They advertise their food as a “Mediterranean and Latin American fusion,” but the cuisine feels more global and unique than the website gives it credit for. Anyone can find something here, whether it is seafood, spicy and exotic flavors (for example, the Moroccan-style roasted bell pepper), Hawaiian influence (kalua pork), or a hearty steak. We recommend their Barcelona Traditional Paella; a dry saffron rice filled with moist chicken, juicy shrimp, spicy chorizo, and delicious salmon pieces. The warm bread with pesto sauce is always a tasty start to your meal, and the famous sangria (every local’s favorite) is the perfect way to end it. The heart and soul in the food, the crowd, the music, and even the owner is evident from the moment you walk in, and you can’t really find another place like it. Don’t pass this place up; it may end up being one of the highlights of your whole trip! lepapagayoleucadia.com
