DINING WITH A
By: Dawn-Renée Rice
If there’s one experience you should have during your stay in San Diego, it’s a fantastic meal while you look out over the ocean watching boats go by, surfers riding the waves and the sun setting behind the horizon. Our list of restaurants with some of the best views in San Diego will definitely make sure you don’t go home disappointed.
VIGILUCCI’S SEAFOOD & STEAKHOUSE, CARLSBAD After a day of fun in the sun, nothing is better than kicking back and relaxing on the outdoor patio or at the bar while taking in the 180-degree panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. While you dine, sip on a cocktail and appreciate “The Art of the Aperitivo.” Like its other restaurants, Vigilucci’s practices the age-old Italian custom of offering a complimentary chef ’s plate in the bar with purchase. Nosh on an assortment of bites such as olives, bruschetta, salami or cheese. The offerings vary daily but no matter what you get it’s only the best. Their fresh fish specials change from day to day depending on what the chef selects even up to the day. Executive Chef Dana Sills will do a fresh fish carpaccio or risotto special using what is bountiful and in “stagioni,” or season. They were awarded the 2017 Diners’ Choice Award as a top 10 best scenic dining destination for a reason! vigiluccis.com/reservations/seafood-steakhouse Photo: Vigilucci’s/Matt Morning
Chosen for Rachael Ray’s “Tasty Travels” TV show, Peohe’s is perfectly situated on the water’s edge in Coronado Ferry Landing. This tropical island getaway serves up a delicious array of menu items along with a breathtaking view of the San Diego skyline and San Diego Bay. Dine on their signature Halibut Mai’a, Pupu platters and Surf ‘n Turf sushi roll to see why they’re a local favorite. Their specialty is tropical seafood influenced by Pacific Rim flavors. They also have a sushi bar with distinctive sushi rolls. Enjoy your meal at clothed tables in an elegant setting inside, or dine al fresco on the patio or in the dockside courtyard. peohes.com
SEA180, IMPERIAL BEACH This favorite destination for locals and visitors alike offers an upscale yet accessible beachfront dining option with amazing 180-degree views of the Pacific Ocean. Their floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor patio looks out over the Imperial Beach Pier and Coronado Island so you get the full effect of the view while you dine. KOMBUCHA CRAZE By: Deanne Goodman
K
ombucha is the fastest growing health beverage on the market. Yet, if you have never heard of it, you are not alone. The bubbly fermented tea full of probiotics has existed for thousands of years, but has seen a rise in popularity in both bottles and on tap in just the past few years. The main reason people drink kombucha is for the probiotics that provide the gut with good bacteria. Friendly gut bacteria aids in digestion, energy levels and even boosts immunity. The low sugar and low calorie organic beverage is a refreshing and healthier alternative to soda. If you are new to kombucha, some flavors can be an acquired taste. The sweeter flavors like Bucha’s Guava Mango, Whalebird’s Jasmine Bliss or Health-Ade’s Pink Lady Apple are great for newbies or even the pickiest of kids. You can find these flavors on tap at Park Place Liquor and Deli in Coronado or at The Dana Hotel in Mission Bay. parkplaceliquordeli.com; thedana.com The most popular flavor of kombucha on the market is GT’s Trilogy kombucha. It’s a combination of raspberry, lemon and ginger. You can find this one at many places including all San Diego Urban Plates and Native Foods locations. urbanplates.com/locations; nativefoods.com/locations/san-diego

You can expect to see more than 17 growers, produce from a number of local San Diego farms, 30 area-based specialty food purveyors, plus handmade gifts from local merchants and live entertainment provided by local bands. Just up the hill from downtown is the bright and colorful Hillcrest Farmers Market. One of the pleasures of visiting this market is the thoughtful layout. The market is sectioned off into bright, plump produce, homemade offerings including breads, pastries, guacamoles, vinegars, olive oils, and handmade crafts of scented soaps, teas and candles twisting their way to the almighty street food truck rodeo. The smells emitting from the food trucks will send you salivating towards delicious delights. Pan-fried garlic Vietnamese noodles, organic rotisserie chicken and crispy vegetables are all roasted on site. You’ll discover a world tour of other flavors from Africa, Greece, Mexico and more. SPLISH, SPLASH! GET WET AND WILD AT AQUATICA SAN DIEGO, SEA WORLD’S WATERPARK™ By Carianne Steinman
The summer heat might make you want to avoid outdoor activities, but you can enjoy the heat and the sun at Aquatica San Diego, SeaWorld’s Waterpark™. Whether you’re a parent trying to find a way to entertain the kids or just someone looking for a good time, Aquatica is the place to be! While it may not be the biggest water park in the country, Aquatica has a good selection of attractions with a decent mix of closed and open air slides. Two of our favorite slides, Tassie’s Twister and Walhalla Wave, allows two to four riders in a single raft so you can keep your group together. But be aware: These slides also offer some of the biggest thrills in the park and may not be for the timid members of your party. Another fun attraction for larger groups is Taumata Racer where up to six people can race face-first down one of the tallest slides in the park. This water slide is 375-feet of high-speed fun that swoops you around a 180-degree turn, and moves you in and out of tunnels before racing across a finish line. You’ll also want to check out some of 24

their other slides and attractions such as Big Surf Shores, one of the largest wave pools in Southern California; HooRoo Run®, which takes riders down an 80-foot descent; and several children’s attractions including Loggerhead Lane and Slippity Dippity. You can take a break from the slides by heading over to the wave pool. Stay close to the shore and let the waves brush against your legs, or head in toward the 6-foot deep end and swim against the waves. (Tip: If you’re not the strongest swimmer but still want to go to the deep end to enjoy the waves, grab one of Aquatica’s complimentary life jackets before you head out.) Looking for something a little more relaxing? The lazy river might be your favorite place in the park. Hop on a tube, sit back and relax as the current gently pushes you along the 1,250-foot river. Keep your eyes open and you’ll notice that you drift right past a group of gorgeous Caribbean flamingos. If you want to spend some time relaxing out of the water, just grab a beach chair and relax in the sand and sun. Or, for an additional cost, you can even rent a shaded cabana!

If you have small children, there are more than enough kid-friendly attractions at Aquatica to keep them entertained all day! There are shallow pools and small slides for the younger kids, and tanks with turtles inside for them to watch. For slightly bigger kids, the park has a four-story play zone featuring tunnels to climb through, rope bridges, and water squirting everywhere! One of the main attractions is a 500-gallon bucket that unloads water on the crowds below every five minutes. We noticed both children and adults would gather around for that dosing. It was a blast!
into the park, but food is not. However, there are many places to purchase meals or snacks throughout the park, so you do not have to worry about going hungry. Additionally, many people put their towels and shoes on beach chairs and just leave them there all day for no charge. However, if you have something valuable that you are worried about losing, there are lockers you can rent for an additional cost. We rented a locker and managed to fit everything for our party of three into one small-sized locker!
While the attractions are included with paid admission, there may be some additional costs you will need to prepare for. Water bottles are allowed
So don’t let the summer heat make you a slave to the A/C this summer. Get out there and enjoy San Diego’s beautiful weather at Aquatica San Diego, SeaWorld’s Waterpark™!

A SPACE TO WONDER By: Deanne Goodman
Wonderspaces is a pop-up interactive art experience for visitors of all ages this summer in San Diego. GETAWAY San Diego Magazine caught up with co-founder Patrick Charles to learn more. The idea for Wonderspaces took shape last March when Charles’ friend Jason Shin, whom he met in the Marine Corps in 2006, asked him if he wanted to start the company during a Skype call. At the time, Charles was living in Brussels, Belgium. “The timing was right and — most importantly — the idea was right,” Charles said. He quit his job in Europe, moved back to the U.S., and Wonderspaces was born. They sourced more than 16 world-class interactive art experiences previously enjoyed at Burning Man, Sundance Film Festival and SXSW, to name a few. The lineup includes room-sized installations, perception bending sculptures and virtual reality films. For those new to virtual reality, Charles explains, “VR is not something you do — it is a place you go. When you place on the headset, you are immersed into a world that is without limitations.”
30 SUMMER 2017

To ensure you get the full VR experience, Charles recommends purchasing tickets in advance and arriving early. “The VR lines get long and each ticket time block has a limited capacity to assure all attendees get to experience everything.” While all ages are welcome at Wonderspaces, only one of three virtual reality films — Show it 2 Me by Titmouse — is available to children under age 13 due to the hardware manufacturers’ restrictions. After experiencing so much awe-inspiring artwork, feed your appetite with art-inspired food and beverages available for purchase on-site. Wonderspaces is also donating proceeds from alcohol sales to various local art related non-profits. The event runs June-July 2017 every day except Mondays. Tickets are $16-$24 a person and can be purchased online at wonderspaces.com/tickets. Wonderspaces is located in Mission Valley at 7960 Civita Boulevard, San Diego. Parking is free. After San Diego, the experience heads to Austin, Phoenix, and Denver, with additional locations to be announced soon.
