If you are up for it, you can walk the entire 100 acres of the zoo, but be sure to wear comfortable shoes; the natural terrain of mesas and canyons is beautiful, but the pathways can be hilly. There are several great alternatives to walking, like the Double Decker Guided Bus Tours, which are available from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and are included in the 1-Day Pass admission price. This 35-minute, narrated tour covers about 70 percent of the zoo. Note: a Spanish version is offered on the weekends at 1 p.m. The zoo also offers The Kangaroo Express Bus from 10:30 a.m. to closing each day, which allows you to hop off at five different stops. If you are not afraid of heights, you can soar high above the zoo on the Skyfari® Aerial Tram, an overhead gondola lift that transports you from one side of the zoo to the other, while providing an aerial glimpse of the zoo, the animals, and views of Balboa Park. You can board the Skyfari® near the Children’s Zoo in Discovery Outpost, or on the other side of the park near the Northern Frontier. While you’re there, make sure to visit Polar Bear Plunge. how playful and fun these endangered Arctic bruins can be by watching them from the underwater viewing room. Note: The Skyfari® operates daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is also included in your 1-Day Pass admission price. Built as a family-friendly attraction, the San Diego Zoo has an interactive Children’s Zoo, and kid-friendly activities throughout the park. There is so much more to see and do at the zoo than we have room here to mention, so make sure to go online and discover all the wonderful things the World Famous San Diego Zoo has to offer. From dining options and fun tours, to interactive exhibits, it’s a one-stop, family-friendly destination you won’t want to miss! And feel good about your experience after your visit – the non-profit zoo, along with its Safari Park sibling 35 miles north of San Diego, plays an important role in saving endangered species worldwide. SEAPORT VILLAGE By: Natalie Mason
San Diego is known for its amazing selection of shops and restaurants, but did you know you can get the best of both in one place at the quaint seaside attraction known as Seaport Village? This coastal getaway is located in the San Diego Bay, and is only a short taxi, trolley or Pedi cab ride away. It has over 50 shops and restaurants, so it was easy for me and my family to find something we liked on our recent visit. We were craving sweets when we arrived, so we headed to the Seaport Cookie Company. The variety alone had my younger brother smiling from ear to ear. Just to go against the status quo, I chose the rice krispie treat, which was simple and airy, yet flavorful – a classic dessert! The boardwalk was lined with vendors selling a variety of items and services, from tie-dye shirts to fortune telling. You can also rent a surrey, which is a shaded bike carriage that can hold two to four people, giving you the chance to explore the village and the boardwalk on wheels. After an hour of browsing, my family decided to take a break and relax in the main plaza. While we sat enjoying the sea breeze, a musical group played under one of the gazebos. Next, we headed to Upstart Crow, a bookstore and coffee shop. The shop has a great selection of books from newer arrivals like Mindy’s Kaling’s “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?” to classics like F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.”

We visited an olive oil shop called Seaport Oil, Vinegars & Wine that had the best balsamic vinaigrette I’ve ever tasted. We also wandered into Alamo Flags, where I finally convinced my mom to buy a San Diego State University garden flag. When we finished shopping, it was time for dinner, so we decided on Buster’s Beach House and Longboard Bar. Buster’s has a great Southern California, beachstyle vibe and the wait staff was polite and efficient. After dinner, we headed over to Frost Me Gourmet Cupcakes. We were all quite impressed by the intricacy of the flavors. I couldn’t say no to Chocolate Cookies and Crème, my brother chose Double Chocolate Ganache and my mom had Caramel Sea Salt. EAT
A Taste of Italy at
Vigilucci’s By: Madison Teague
Photography by Gianni Gracen Photography
Nestled along Highway 101, in the charming little beach town of Leucadia, sits Vigilucci’s Trattoria Italiana offering a mouth-watering slice of heaven.
What really caught my attention was seeing someone order a four-bone rack of ribs off the starter menu. I was so intrigued; I had to try it out. These ribs are insanely good! I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that these ribs literally fell off the bone. You have to try them to believe it.
My experience at Vigilucci’s was sheer perfection from beginning to end. Before I sat down at the gorgeous bar in their main dining room, I had to sneak a peek of their blossoming outdoor patio. After taking a stroll through what felt like an Italian grotto, I was already planning to come back and enjoy this beautiful patio! There are multiple seating options to match any occasion, from private rooms available for parties and family gatherings, to business dining rooms for company functions. Their main dining area is equipped with an elegant wraparound bar, a front patio and two dining rooms. They also have a pianist there all evening, so it’s a great location for a romantic rendezvous, or a casual dinner with friends. While the layout and ambiance of Vigilucci’s may draw you in, it’s the flawless Italian cuisine that will make you a regular. During happy hour, which is available seven days a week and lasts all night on Mondays, you will receive a complementary cheese plate, and bruschetta brushed with oil and toasted to perfection. From the appetizer menu, I started with the crab cake and arugula salad. Next, I had the homemade meatballs. This is an absolute must-try if you’re looking for authentic Italian food.

While there are multiple Vigilucci’s locations all over San Diego, this is the only one specializing in the pizza variety. Of course, I had to make that my main meal. Everyone in the restaurant was buzzing about the calzones. I decided to have the best of both and order my pizza as a calzone. There was a giant element of surprise I will leave for you to experience for yourself when you order your calzone. What I will tell you, however is this Italian masterpiece has yet to be matched. It really was the ultimate dining experience from start to finish, and each bite was better than the last. There was absolutely no way I would’ve been able to handle dessert without running a few laps around the block. My server recommended I try the Godiva White Chocolate cocktail. This is perfect for those of you with a sweet tooth who didn’t save room for dessert, and the best way to top off a flawless Italian feast. Vigilucci’s Trattoria Italiana is a dream come true for any foodie. Take a stroll on the beach and end your day with an unforgettable dining experience. San Diego

By: Alisa Kerr San Diego is indeed America’s Finest City. Once you’re here you never want to leave! But there’s also a big, wonderful world out there to explore. So what can you do to experience the world all in one place? Here’s how you can enjoy some of the world’s best experiences without leaving San Diego!
1. Lunch - and tequila! - in Mexico
There’s no need to cross the border to get amazing Mexican fare! Check out historic Old Town State Park, which is home to the first permanent Spanish settlement in Calfornia, and is now home to a plethora of authentic Mexican goods and food. In the heart of it all is El Agave Restaurant, which not only serves up some of the most exceptional and unique cuisine, it also has over 200 tequilas to sip, shoot, and/or mix into a delicious margarita…or three. elagave.com, 619.220.0692
2.
Breakfast in France
Bonjour! At Cafe Chloe, you can cozy up to the action at the beautiful bar, or kick back at a sidewalk table where you can start your day with a delicious French breakfast and espresso. Although it’s located in downtown’s East Village, Cafe Chloe’s classy Parisian decor and authentic French food will make you feel as though you’re dining on the Champs-Élysées. Enjoy classic fresh pastries and a “bowl” of cafe crème, and indulge in a decadent brioche topped with a poached egg while sipping on a tasty, lavender-infused mimosa. cafechloe.com, 619.232.3242

You don’t need a passport to find amoré. Instead, you can head over to Coronado Island, pick up a bottle of vino, then board an authentic Venetian gondola and let The Gondola Company take you on a romantic cruise through the canals of the Coronado Cays. Snuggle up to your honey, enjoy chocolate covered strawberries and catch a beautiful sunset as your gondolier gently rows you across the waterway. gondolacompany.com, 619.429.6317
6. Dinner in Japan
Japan = Great Sushi. Great Sushi = Nobu. It’s no secret that Nobu is a favorite sushi spot across the globe, and we are lucky enough to have one right here in San Diego’s festive Gaslamp District. When you go, order the black cod with miso and the yellowtail with jalapeño. There’s a reason those dishes are famous. (Enjoy!) noburestaurants.com, 619.814.4124
5. Safari through Africa and Asia
Get up close and personal with some of the most impressive and dangerous inhabitants of Africa and Asia at the famous San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Take an incredible, two-hour tour in an open vehicle through the park’s 1,800 acres, which have been meticulously converted to replicate the animals’ natural environments. Safely observe majestic giraffes, rare East African Southern White Rhinos, aggressive Cape Buffalo and many more amazing animals as they roam freely around the park. Some animals will even approach your vehicle to get a snack! sdzsafaripark.org, 760.747.8702
3. Relax in Paradise Weary “world travelers” can retreat to the lush waterfront grounds at Paradise Point Spa for pampering and relaxation. Choose from four global rituals, including the luxurious “javanese lu’lur” ritual of Balinese royalty that includes a healing exotic oil massage, purifying rice grain exfoliation, and a relaxing soak. “And They’re Off!”
How to Spend the Day at the Races
By: Alisa Kerr
A truly unique and quintessential summer activity in San Diego is a day at the Del Mar Race Track, affectionately dubbed “Where the Surf Meets the Turf” by race enthusiast Bing Crosby in the 1930s. Celebrities, locals and tourists flock to see and be seen while betting on ponies and sipping bubbly in the sunny stands. Here’s how you can enjoy a day at the track like a local!
WHAT TO WEAR
While some areas of the track require dresses for women and jackets for men, the majority of the track is casual. Nice shorts, jeans and sundresses are pretty standard attire. If you want to pick up some fancy new track-worthy duds, stop by nearby Matti D's or one of the many shops at the Del Mar Plaza.
WHERE TO GRAB A PRE- RACE LIBATION
Hands down the most popular pre-race spot is Red Tracton’s, a cozy steakhouse just across from the track with a piano bar, a nice wine selection and a festive crowd of race fans.
WHERE TO SIT AT THE TRACK
WHERE TO SHOP: Matti D’s: 2689 Via Del La Valle, 858.523.0693
Admission starts for as little as $6 per person and you can get reserved seats for an extra $5 to $10. For an even better experience reserve a table trackside so you can have comfy seats with a great view and table service. Tables start at $60 for a party of four. Check out all your options at dmtc.com.
WHERE TO GO AFTER
The fun doesn’t stop after the last pony crosses the post. Race goers congregate at En Fuego Cantina to party, The Brigantine to mingle with views of the track and ocean, or at Pacifica Del Mar or beachfront Poseidon for a little more upscale but still festive dinner.
INFO AND OTHER TIPS
Check out the calendar of events at dmtc.com. There are a variety of great concerts and events throughout the season. Also consider buying your tickets in advance, arriving early for some free betting instructions and lining up a ride so you don’t have to pay for parking.

If you’re looking to try something new or you’re an adrenalin-loving tourist, jet packing is defiffiifinitely the way to go. I sat down with Nate Sinisgalli, General Manager and Master Flyer at Jetpack America, to get the inside scoop on everything you need to know about one of San Diego’s favorite aquatic activities.
“Anyone who wants to have a blast, wants to try something new, and have a day they will never forget. Those are the people I would recommend should come check us out.” jetpackamerica.com, 888.553.6471
-Do you need to be in great physical shape to flfflly a jetpack? “We flffllfly people from all over [the] world, all different ages, shapes, and sizes. The only thing you have to know how to do is have fun. We’ll take care of the rest.” -Do you have a favorite memory of someone flffllying for the fiffiirst time? “Yes. It was the oldest person we’ve ever flffllown, he was 92 years old! And he killed it!” - I bet that was amazing! Do you have a lot of success stories like that? “All the time. We’ve flffllflo wn paraplegics and wounded warriors. Those are always incredible experiences to be a part of.” -What new flffllflight options do you guys have going on?
