There’s something truly special brewing in San Diego’s craft beer community. Call them artists, alchemists, visionaries, outlaws — it’s like the perfect mix of barley, yeast, water, sunshine and hoppyness combined to create an epicenter of quality, creativity and kinship in beer. From gold-medal winning gurus to up-and-coming innovators, San Diego brewers are making some of the most sought-after beers in America. Lucky you, we’ve got the cold facts on some of the hottest craft brew locations! SD TAPROOM In the early days of the craft brew revolution, brothers Kevin and Kyle Conover paired a love of artisan beer with warm hospitality and fine food to create a seminal San Diego location for craft brew. SD TapRoom boasts one of the most comprehensive lists of some 50 local beers on tap, a rotating list of some 25 others and more than 100 craft bottles. You’ll find local favorites such as Ballast Point, Green Flash, Stone Brewing, and Karl Strauss, to name a few, as well as uncommon and cult-status beer, kombucha, cider, mead and cold brew coffee. The Conover brothers are sticklers for quality and freshness, with strict processes for line cleaning and chilling. Enjoy weekday happy hours (3 - 6 p.m.) and weekend brunch (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.), plus specialty bottle Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, trivia nights, cask nights and NFL Football. The menu is extensive, creative and top-quality, with stone-baked pizzas, burgers, pastas, salads and subs. PIZZA PORT Deep in San Diego’s craft brew roots, you’ll find Pizza Port. There’s reverence among brewers and locals for the spunky 1987 pizza startup that grew into 2003’s “Small Brewpub of the Year” at the Great American Beer Festival. It’s now a fixture with six locations and a “Large Brewpub of the Year” recognition in 2009. Classic and gourmet pizzas, award-winning beers and a family friendly atmosphere keep adding to the accolades.

BELCHING BEAVER Funny name, delicious beer. Highest-quality, rare ingredients, mastery of the process and love for the craft make this fast-growing name a must-visit. Locations in North Park, Vista and Oceanside make that easy; an Ocean Beach location is in the works. The new Belching Beaver Tavern in Vista has an impressive, playful menu that pairs with Beavers Milk Stout, Hop Highway 78 IPA, Me So Honey or Great Lei. Daily happy hour is from 5 - 7 p.m. COMMON THEORY PUBLIC HOUSE You can’t go wrong with a visit to Common Theory Public House with 30+ beers on tap and a rotating draft lineup. For your non-craft beer loving family and friends, they can come along and imbibe on Soju cocktails, ciders and mead, coffees and ports, wine, soft drinks, and kombucha. Pair your drink with one of their delicious menu options inspired by the different ethnic backgrounds of the restaurant owners themselves. They’ve creatively fused Korean-Chinese-Mexican-American influences, which are seamlessly displayed through the environment, food, and drinks. BARREL REPUBLIC At Barrel Republic, you become the beer expert. With well over 40 casks to choose from, you can pour your own glass of brew or wine with the swipe of a wristband. You’ll find local draft options such as Coronado Brewing Company, Belching Beaver, Green Flash Brewing Co., and Modern Times Beer, plus many others to choose from. Barrel Republic has two locations in Pacific Beach and Oceanside, with a Carlsbad location coming soon. Stop by for Happy Hour and get 20 percent off all taps. Happy Hour is available all day on Mondays, and 3 - 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

By: Dawn-Renée Rice Our weather might not make you think of a typical fall season since we average around 70 to 75 degrees at any given time, but occasionally we have to cozy up with a light jacket or comfy sweater. HOT DISHES If you’re in the mood for a one dish option, stop by Gregorio’s Italian Restaurant in Carlsbad for their hearty and filling spaghetti and meatballs. The portion is huge, the meatballs are flavorful, and the noodles are perfectly combined with chunky marinara sauce. The Green Dragon Tavern & Museum, also in Carlsbad, serves up a delicious one dish meal – their cheesy, gooey Lobster Mac ‘n Cheese made with Maine lobster, braised pork belly, and cheddar and parmesan cheese. In Mission Hills, Farmer’s Bottega has the tasty Wild Boar Sausage Risotto made with roasted cherry tomatoes, wild mushrooms, and crispy Brussels sprouts. Leucadia Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant, which has three locations, offers a hearty helping of lasagna topped with cheese, and if you’re in the mood for meat and potatoes (a true fall comfort food), stop by McP’s Irish Pub in Coronado to order the shepherd’s pie.

HOT POTS It’s definitely not a fall comfort food if it isn’t a soup or stew! We have several spoon-worthy options for you to choose from. Union Kitchen + Tap, with locations in the Gaslamp Quarter and in Encinitas, brings the taste of the sea to your bowl with their Fisherman’s Stew made with shrimp, P.E.I. mussels, manila clams, calamari, and spicy tomato broth with the option to add torn pappardelle. At Indigo Grill in Little Italy you can indulge in the quintessential fall comfort food when you dine on their Roasted Butternut Squash Soup made with cilantro pesto, roasted corn, pepitas, and crème fraiche. For a taste of the South, visit Backyard Kitchen + Tap in Pacific Beach and enjoy spoonfuls of hearty Texas Red Beef Cheek Chili with cheddar cheese curds, mini bacon biscuits,

and sour cream. In Hillcrest, Brazen BBQ offers up their version of a Louisiana staple with their Cajun Gumbo made with smoked chicken and Cajun sausage gumbo served over white rice.

HANDFULS What doesn’t make you think of fall comfort food more than a grilled cheese sandwich? You’ll want to try the meaty, cheesy Carnivore Grilled Cheese at GRATER Grilled Cheese located in La Jolla and Mission Hills. It’s made with a five-cheese blend and the mouthwatering, housemade GRATER 100% California Angus beef hamburger patty served on artisan sourdough bread. For a twist on the traditional grilled cheese sandwich, get your hands on the Tavern Grilled Cheese at Tavern at the Beach in Pacific Beach. Aged cheddar, a threecheese blend, bourbon-roasted tomatoes, avocado, caramelized onion and ale-aioli is served between two pieces of pretzel Texas toast. You will definitely want to wrap your hands around the Pulled Pork Sandwich at Cowboy Star Restaurant & Butcher Shop. It’s made with juicy, tender slow-roasted pork, jalapeño barbecue sauce, and frisée on a buttermilk roll. And last, but certainly not least, are the tasty Black & Bleu Biscuit Sliders at True North Tavern in North Park. These babies are made with ground prime chuck patties, bleu cheese crumbles, bacon, blackened sauce, lettuce, tomato, and fried onion. So delicious and so comforting! Whether you’re looking for a hearty pasta or meat and potato dish, a bowl full of soup, stew or chili, or an ooey, gooey grilled cheese sandwich, we have plenty of places for you to fill up and warm up on a chilly San Diego “fall” day.

RECREATION

By: Alisa Kerr San Diego is undeniably beautiful and full of fun things to do. If you’re looking for a day trip for a change of scenery, then check out our favorite inland fall getaways.

FALL COLORS IN JULIAN Travel Time: 1 hour

WINE TASTING IN TEMECULA Travel Time: 1 hour

Round up the troops and make the scenic drive an hour east for a day in the cute little town of Julian located in the Cuyamaca mountains. Saddle up at Integrity Stables and ride horses along scenic trails to see the beautiful red, orange, and gold leaves that are fall’s trademark. After a fun ride head into town to grab a burger at Buffalo Bills Restaurant or Miner’s Diner, then poke around the boutiques, pan for gold, catch some live music and a hard cider, and celebrate the apple harvest with a famous Julian apple pie.

Get an early start and head up to Temecula for a peaceful sunrise hot air balloon ride over Southern California’s impressive vineyards with A Grape Escape Balloon Adventure. Your pilot will provide you with an unforgettable and beautiful ariel tour, which is definitely worth getting up early to experience! Then toast with some amazing wine and enjoy a yummy lunch on the patio at the Creekside Grille at award-winning Wilson Creek Winery. Be sure to check out their fun (and interesting) wine tour with tastings of a variety of delicious wines. If you’ve never tried almond champagne, then you are definitely in for a treat. We also liked the white cabernet – maybe a little too much! Soak up the sunshine and enjoy a glass or two of your favorite wines on their beautiful grounds or in the festive tasting room. Stop at Goat & Vine on your way out of town for a casual, but really, really good dinner. Make sure to try one of their tasty pizzas!

Over 10,000 of Julian’s apple pies are baked during the month of October so there is definitely one with your name on it. Stop in at Mom’s Pies to indulge in a slice of apple heaven a la mode. BONUS: On Sundays there is a free (and funny) re-enactment of a historic gunfight you won’t want to miss!
