Colour purple
The film, “colour purple” that was made by Steven Spielberg in 1985, has a cast of excellent actors and the special participation of Oprah Winfrey. We think that was a very good selection of actors because during the film they can transmit to the public the feelings and the sensations as if they were living in that situation. This film portrays the violation of several essential human rights for example the right to education. Celie didn’t have the possibility to learn when she was young because she was slave of her father and when she grew up she became a slave of her husband. This shows us that education means power and as she was slave she didn’t have that right. However, she fought against it and she learnt how to read. Other human rights that were violated were the right of freedom and equality and the right of marrying the person that we love. Celie didn’t have freedom and she was forced to do everything that her husband wanted. He took away her dignity because he raped her, he beat her and he insulted her many times. Her father took away her dignity as well because he forced her to marry with a man that she didn’t like. No one should be subjected to this violence and oppression. We can also see the discrimination between white people and black people. Sofia was beaten because she confronted a white man and because of this she was arrested and her children were taken away from her. After being released she became slave of a white woman that was wife of the man that sent her to jail. After all we can see an attitude that most of the women don’t have: confront the man that took away their lives. It’s important that
people shouldn’t be afraid and have the courage to fight for what is right. We liked to watch this film because it opens the eyes of many people nowadays who don’t give the necessary value to the things they have. Celie, throughout this movie, can be an example because she shows us how we can be happy against our own destiny. For us it’s an excellent film because it portrays a story of pain, suffering and injustice at the light of the reality of black, Christian and poor women, However it is also a story of overcoming the sexual, racial and cultural discrimination.
