Movie Review – “The Colour Purple” “The Colour Purple” is one of those films that can change our perception about life. It makes us think; mostly it makes us think if those stories were real. They were indeed. Although it is based on a novel, the content of this movie was someone’s life, somewhere in the Earth. In USA, as it happened in other countries in the world, black people were not treated as white people. They didn’t have the same rights or the same freedom; they were seen as inconveniences of society. For me, the strongest part of this drama is the way of living of the central character, Celie. Honestly, while seeing the movie, I kept wondering “How is this possible…how can anyone survive in such sorrow?”, because it’s so hard to believe that was reality some decades ago. Even though the conditions of their lives are tough, the women in “The Colour Purple” don’t give up. We see Celie, Nettie, Sofia and Shug struggling through the years; it was never easy, but they managed to be happy in their own way. When it comes to men in this story…I think they were so mean they don’t even deserve a comment! It’s almost a contradiction, because this movie represents the early 1900’s and we think living was difficult in those times. But the truth is nowadays there are still couples that don’t get along and their marriage is like hell, as we saw in the film…Perhaps this is never going to change. I think the biggest lesson we can learn from this story is that’s never too late, never too late to be happy, to change our life or to make things right; everything is possible if we try at least. Summarizing, “The Colour Purple” is a powerful, deep and bright narrative of relationships, emotions and life at the beginning of the 20th century. I would give it a 10, of course.
