CITY OF HOLLYWOOD, Florida Earns Perfect LGBTQ+ Municipal Equality Index Score for the Second Straight Year
For the second year in a row, the City of Hollywood earned a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation’s 2022 Municipal Equality Index (MEI). The MEI examines how inclusive municipal laws, polices and services are of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer+ people (LGBTQ+) who live and work there.
Hollywood joins 118 other cities across the U.S. that earned a perfect score. “Since its founding by Joseph Young in 1925, Hollywood has established itself as a welcoming and diverse City for everyone,” says Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy. “I take great pleasure in knowing a much wider audience is learning how Hollywood is a place for equity, diversity and inclusion.”
The HRC scored the City on LGBTQ+ focused activities in five categories – non-discrimination laws, municipality as employer, municipal services, law enforcement, and leadership on LGBTQ+ equality. Examples of City initiatives that contributed to the perfect MEI score include:
• Supported the annual Hollywood LBGTQ Council’s Pride Street Festival in downtown Hollywood which includes an opening ceremony, Flag Raising and Pride Brunch.
• Issued a Proclamation in Recognition of Pride Month and held a Progress Pride flag raising ceremony at City Hall.
• Provided funding for organizations that serve LGBTQ+ youth and young adults.
• Shared information on Lesbian Visibility Day, and National Transgender HIV Testing Day and posted on the City’s main social media accounts.
• Launched a LGBTQ+ Ally Program for City employees, where participants viewed the documentary “Open Dialogues: Stories from the LGBTQ Community” provided by the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood, “Be come an Ally – LGBTQIA+” video presentation, and attend LGBTQ 101 Proficiency and Workplace Bias Training.
Visit the City’s website at www.HollywoodFL.org to learn more.

Under the baton of Key West native Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso and President & CEO Jacqueline Lorber, this LGBTQ power couple is making great strides in bringing world-class classical music performances of the highest caliber to its audiences. Today, the South Florida Symphony Orchestra is the largest orchestra in the region and is recognized as a major cultural institution serving Broward, MiamiDade, and Monroe counties. It is celebrated for its commitment to diversity and inclusion and Symphony in the Schools, a robust music education program reaching more than 100,000 youth in under-resourced communities and schools. Their accolades are many, having been named the first Partner in the Arts at Broward Center’s The Parker, and the couple recently took home a prestigious Diversity Honors award for transforming lives by living authentically and advancing inclusiveness.
The upcoming 2023/24 season, which runs November – April, features famous classical music works, including a not-to-be-missed performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, honoring the 200th anniversary of the famed work, plus orchestra premieres by African American female composers Florence Price and Jessie Montgomery, and much more.
In May, June, and July, music fans can enjoy their annual Summer Chamber Music Series in Fort Lauderdale and Miami (a nice respite from the heat that includes a meet and greet with musicians and a glass of bubbly).

Symphony Orchestra: Let the Music Touch Your Heart
After a triumphant 25th anniversary season filled with sold-out performances, one thing is clear, Maestra Alfonso (who studied at the prestigious Peabody Institute) could have taken her talents anywhere, but she decided to share her love of classical music with the people she cares about the most: her community. This is your South Florida Symphony Orchestra, welcoming you with open arms and open hearts.

Many individuals young and old have introspective thoughts of making a difference in life. Most of us might join in a beach cleanup or local park cleanup once a year. We may even volunteer at the local food bank on occasion, but what if you could make a difference daily? It would change your life forever. 10 years ago, I experienced this blessing. I joined the AHF family and have the opportunity to use the tools provided by the foundation to change many lives for the better. I have made numerous connections in the community that have resulted in a strong network of solution driven doers where failure is not an option. In order to understand AHF, we must go back to the beginning…
AHF’s path to becoming the largest provider of HIV/AIDS care in the U.S. began with a small group of dedicated activists in Los Angeles in the 1980s who had a simple humanitarian goal: give the people dying of AIDS a safe, dignified, and compassionate place to spend their final days. AIDS Hospice Foundation was officially established in June 1987, and the following year the group opened the Chris Brownlie Hospice, L.A.’s first licensed hospice for people suffering from AIDS. By July 1990, AHF realized that the need for specialized medical care was fortunately outpacing the need for AIDS hospice care, and the group changed its name to AIDS Healthcare Foundation as its focus shifted to providing cutting-edge medicine and advocacy, regardless of ability to pay.
AHF funds its mission to rid the world of AIDS through a network of pharmacies, thrift stores, healthcare contracts and other strategic partnerships. Generating new, innovative ways of treatment, prevention and advocacy has been the hallmark of our success. We are currently leading a mass testing initiative to identify and treat the 25 million people who are unaware they are infected.
Business Connect Info 2023
What is the Business Connect Program?
The GFLGLCC’s Business Connect Program is basically a “matchmaking” service for your company.
How does it work?
The new Business Connect program takes a direct “hands-on” approach to providing value to our corporate level members and partners. Eligible members interested in participating in the program will first personally meet with the President / CEO of the Chamber or one of its Board Members to identify their business goals and objectives, their ideal client type and their industry focus. That, along with other key drivers will then be analyzed in the context of the GFLGLCC member base to determine the strategic relationships that make the most business sense. From there, personal introductions are made between members.
OK! But how does it really work?
To demonstrate exactly how the program works, consider this fictional example:
An eligible member who provides a line of allnatural, organic toiletries is interested in expanding their business. During the initial planning meeting, it is decided that the best opportunities to grow their business through the Chamber are via hotels and resorts.
With 40+ hotel and resort chamber members, the focus shifts toward identifying those that could mutually benefit from an introduction. It is concluded that an email will be sent to all 40+ hotel and resort members from the Chamber on behalf of the member, followed up with phone calls to a short list of 10 that have the most promise.
How do we arrive at this short list?
By considering things like the ability of local management to make purchasing decisions for in-room amenities or gift shop inventories, any “intelligence” related to change that’s happening or anticipated that could result in a requirement for new product options, etc.
Once the 10 have been identified, the goal is to ultimately facilitate an in-person or virtual introduction with as many of them as possible. This might occur at one of the monthly mixers, at a quarterly breakfast or
luncheon, at some other local event or at a brief meeting (in person or virtually) scheduled specifically for the purpose of a meet and greet.
The example doesn’t end there. Through the analysis, let’s say that there are also two hotel management and consulting company members identified. By facilitating an introduction to those two members, additional opportunities may open up via their networks!
As is demonstrated by the specificity of that fictional example, all program details will be custom tailored to each individual member that goes through the program. Great care will be taken to make meaningful introductions that have the potential to benefit both sides. For this reason, the specific number of introductions and approach to facilitating the connections will vary from member to member.
Why Was I Selected for the Pilot Program?
First and foremost, your company qualified because you are a Premier level member and above. Secondly, based on our understanding of your business as well as the demographic and needs of our membership base at large (including our Corporate Partners), we believe there is a potential opportunity for all parties involved that warrants more discussion.
How Much Does it Cost?
NOTHING! The Business Connect Program is just one more of the value-added benefits that are being offered as part of your membership fee. However, given the specific, custom and hands-on approach required to make the program a success, we do ask that you invest the appropriate time in the process for discussions, introductions, follow-ups, etc.

LGBT + Visitor Center
OUR LGBT + VISITOR CENTER SERVES ALL OF GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE
The Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT Chamber of Commerce operates the area’s first LGBT+ Visitor Center to showcase attractions of interest to LGBT+ visitors. Greater Fort Lauderdale has been popular with the LGBT+ community for decades, welcoming 1.5 million LGBT+ visitors who spend $1.5 billion annually. The Visitor Center is a result of a partnership between Visit Lauderdale and the Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT Chamber of Commerce. The center is located with the Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT Chamber of Commerce in the heart of Wilton Manors, Broward County’s LGBTcentric district with the destinations’ largest concentration of LGBT residents and businesses.
“We are proud to have a long and positive history of supporting the LGBT+ community. The opening of this Visitor Center in 2018 marked another important milestone in the uniqueness of our area in recognizing the value and needs of the LGBT+ visitor,” said Richard Gray, Senior Vice President Inclusion & Accessibility of Visit Lauderdale. “We are very excited about this latest advancement in calling attention to all of our great attractions, hotels, clubs, bars and restaurants that cater to this important audience.”
The Greater Fort Lauderdale area has hundreds of LGBT-owned and operated businesses and the highest concentration of same-sex couple households in the country and is noted as one of the most diverse and welcoming destinations in the world. The LGBT+ community has played a major role in the economic growth and development of the area and is a major tourism draw with its nightlife including some of the most popular LGBT+ bars in the country, such as Hunters Nightclub, and clothing and novelty stores, such as Pride Factory. Gay-owned businesses, such as Castelli Real Estate, have been drivers of real estate for many years and great ambassadors to draw new residents to Broward County. Many local businesses, such as Thasos restaurant, are active in providing support for LGBT+ causes in the community.
“The economic impact the LGBT+ community locally cannot be understated, especially by LGBT+ visitors that come here from all over the world year after year,” said Keith Blackburn, CEO of the Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT Chamber of Commerce. “While LGBT+ travelers
have many of the same needs as straight travelers, many unique needs exist. This Visitor Center serves as a place where people can stop in, ask for recommendations and receive information about the community, our member businesses, events and organizations.”
Greater Fort Lauderdale is also home to one of the largest Pride Centers in the country, the world’s first AIDS museum, the global headquarters of the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association, and the Stonewall Museum, one of the only permanent spaces in the U.S. devoted to exhibitions relating to LGBT+ history and culture.
Visit Lauderdale has been welcoming LGBT+ travelers since 1996 when it became the first Convention & Visitors Bureau with a dedicated LGBT+ marketing department. Since then, Greater Fort Lauderdale has continued to break down barriers and facilitate visibility for the LGBT+ community at large, acting as a pioneer in the hospitality industry and ensuring that the destination is inclusive and welcoming with a diverse, safe and open community for all travelers. For more information on LGBT+ travel in Greater Fort Lauderdale, visit www.sunny.org/lgbt.

Award-winning South Florida Symphony Orchestra Continues to Break Musical Barriers

Sold-out concerts. World premieres. Landmark new venues. South Florida Symphony (SFSO), helmed by one of the musical world’s few lesbian duosMusic Director and Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso and CEO and President Jacqueline Lorber - continues to break barriers and shatter conventional classical music records.
The Prologue – Scoring a Dream
The dream began in 1997 when Alfonso founded the Key West Symphony Orchestra with the support of family, friends, and civic leaders interested in making live symphonic music accessible to the community. At that time, she was studying for her doctorate at the prestigious Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, and was being courted to develop the Northeast’s burgeoning classical music scene. Instead, this fifth-generation Conch chose to return home to her beloved community to create an opportunity for them to have access to an art form she loves so passionately but did not have exposure to while growing up.
A fundraising concert performed in March 1998 led to the debut of a full orchestra in December of that year at the Tennessee Williams Theatre in Key West.
“I’ll never forget riding my bicycle around town and meeting with those interested in having an orchestra in their community, raising funds for a dream I was so incredibly adamant about. So many thought it was a crazy idea to start an orchestra in The Keys. Others had never even experienced a symphony concert or listened to classical music before,” Alfonso shared. “The sold-out opening night concert was an incredible outpouring of
love and music, packed with attendees with whom I spent my childhood. I will forever cherish the support I received from everyone who helped this organization become what it is today.”
A Duo in Harmony
Lorber joined Alfonso in 2009 and the duo spent the next 13 years expanding SFSO’s reach and impact throughout the mainland. From its humble beginnings, the organization now has an operating budget of nearly $2 million. Lorber has been crucial to the organization’s expansion and growth. In 2015, Alfonso and Lorber also made their business and romantic partnership official by exchanging vows.
Of the Top 20 U.S. orchestras, only two currently have women music directors, and only five serve as president or CEO. Alfonso and Lorber are among a small minority of women leading orchestras of any size in the country today.
“Having more women in artistic and administrative leadership roles within the nonprofit performing arts sector can stand to be improved upon. That’s no secret. But, thankfully, the artistic quality of the music we put forth and the dedication and professionalism we inspire in everything we do speaks for itself, “ said Lorber. “By living authentic lives of diversity and inclusion, shaped by our experiences and paired with a veritable United Nations of musicians who contribute to our narrative through expressions of their regional identity, we are creating a lasting legacy while expanding social, economic, and educational opportunities,” she added.

A Symphonic Journey In The Key of Success
Throughout its 25 years, SFSO has hit several high notes with accolades and achievements.
Its Fort Lauderdale audience doubled and Miami tripled, spurring the announcement of performances at the state-of-the-art Michael Tilson Thomas Performance Hall at the New World Center, and in 2023, expanding its Miami footprint further to Coral Gables (at University of Miami’s Gusman Concert Hall). In Broward, SFSO had already leveled-up its performance experience by being named a “Partner in the Arts” for The Parker, managed by Broward Center for the Performing Arts. It was the first organization to be named as such.
As a pioneer in its commitment to classical music for children in underserved communities, Alfonso has steadfastly championed giving back. SFSO’s signature music education program, Symphony in the Schools, has reached over 100,000 students and has provided more than $3.5 million in services and resources in the past five years. SFSO also received a National Endowment for the Arts projects award of $10,000 to further its “Preserving Our Coral Reefs” educational initiative.
Stepping-up the tempo this year, Alfonso and Lorber were celebrated at Diversity Honors, the globally renowned soiree that benefits Harvey Milk Foundation and The Pride Center at Equality Park, exclusively hosted by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood, for
their efforts in transforming lives by living authentically and advancing inclusiveness.
A Segue to the Future
What’s next for SFSO?
Residents and visitors are invited to experience the majesty and momentum of Beethoven, Brahms, Bernstein, Schubert, Stravinsky and more. This season will feature audience favorites plus thrilling orchestra premieres by trailblazing African American female composers Florence Price and Jessie Montgomery and the return of the mustattend concert of the holiday season, Handel’s glorious “Messiah.”
“We aim to excite and delight with some of the world’s most iconic works, including what many consider the greatest piece of music ever written, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, in celebration of the masterpiece’s 200th anniversary; Brahms’ arousing Symphony No. 1; Bernstein’s ode to New York City, Three Dance Episodes from the hit Broadway musical On the Town; and Stravinsky’s enchanting Firebird Suite,” Alfonso excitedly added.
The thrills begin at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale, with Schubert’s romantic Symphony No. 9 “The Great.”
Discounted subscription packages are on sale now and may be purchased by visiting https:// southfloridasymphony.org/ or by calling (954) 522-8445.

MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM: A Partner for the Community, for Long-Term Wellbeing
Since it began as a 100-bed hospital in 1953, Memorial Healthcare System has transformed into a leading regional medical provider whose workforce and cultural values reflect the diversity of the community it serves.
A public hospital system, Memorial provides a wide range of healthcare services, offering care in neuroscience, cardiac and vascular, heart and kidney transplant, rehabilitation, cancer and pediatrics. The system includes six acute-care hospitals, three NICUs and a Level 1 trauma center. Its nursing home, Memorial Manor, has been ranked by US News & World Reports as one of the best in the country.
With specialty service centers, multispecialty locations, 10 primary care centers, urgent care, 24/7 telehealth services, and Community Services programs, Memorial makes access to care easy for patients and families. Strategic partnerships with organizations like Moffitt Cancer Center and Boston Children’s Hospital help Memorial deliver high quality specialized care to the South Florida community. Memorial strives to remove barriers to care and partner with patients over the long term – to manage chronic conditions, improve their health, and maintain lifetimes of wellness.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Memorial’s employees rose to the challenge on every level. Much of that dedication was thanks to Memorial’s investment in outstanding patient- and family-centered care and its Pillars of Excellence (safety, quality, service, people, financial success, growth and community). That Memorial’s culture is special is regularly demonstrated by its annual employee engagement survey – the fall 2022 survey placed Memorial in the 98th percentile nationally for employee satisfaction.
Memorial offers competitive pay, family-centric benefits, and many opportunities to advance. Modern Healthcare magazine has recognized Memorial as a Best Place to Work every year but one since 2009, and has named Memorial its #1 Family-Friendly Employer two years in a row.
Memorial’s Graduate Medical Education, offering programs in 14 specialties, is training hundreds of residents in its nationally recognized brand of high-quality, compassionate care.

EXPERIENCE THE RARE & EXOTIC!
At Flamingo Gardens you can feed a flamingo, take a narrated Tram Tour through a tropical hardwood jungle, and encounter Everglades native wildlife!
Flamingo Gardens is a botanical garden of rare, unusual, or endangered tropical and sub-tropical plants, and a wildlife sanctuary home to permanently injured and non-releasable Florida native wildlife.
Founded in 1927 as a citrus grove by Floyd and Jane Wray, it’s one of the oldest botanical gardens in South Florida. Flamingo Gardens is part of the Long Key chain of islands, once surrounded by the Everglades. Its hardwood hammocks of ancient Live Oaks were once inhabited by the Tequesta people as far back as 1000 BC and are an important bird migratory route.
Most of the large trees and plants at Flamingo Gardens were planted in the 20s - 40s through a US. Department of Agriculture program that sent plants and seeds from around the world to see what could be grown in South Florida. Today, the 60-acre not-for-profit botanical garden boasts 15 Champion Trees certified as the largest trees of their species by the Florida Division of Forestry. It contains thousands of orchids and one of the largest heliconia collections in the continental United States.
Built in 1933, the historic Wray Home is the oldest residence in Broward County west of University Drive and is now a museum reflecting South Florida life in the 1930s.
The Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the largest collection of Florida native wildlife in the state including alligators, black bear, bobcats, eagles, hawks, otters, owls, panther, peacocks, and of course flamingos. Be sure to visit the new native Butterfly Conservatory!
