Department Update
With the support of citizens and City officials, our department strives to offer quality programs and parks consistent with the City’s core values of Excellence, Stewardship, Integrity, Service, and Loyalty. Please contact any member of our staff for information on how your family can enjoy and benefit from our programs and services. WELCOME In April 2017, Morgan Rodgers took over the helm as Director of Alpharetta’s award-winning Recreation and Parks Department! Morgan has been a leader in the recreation and parks industry for more than 40 years and has served five southeastern cities during his career. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation and Parks Administration from Clemson University, and is also an accomplished author. Welcome aboard Morgan! POINTS OF PRIDE National Gold Medal Award: Alpharetta Recreation and Parks has been named as a finalist for the prestigious National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management, administered by the National Recreation and Park Association. This award honors communities throughout the United States that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, resource management, public support, citizen involvement, and innovative approaches to delivering superb park and recreation services. Alpharetta joins three other finalists to compete for the National Gold Medal Grand Plaque Award honors for our category. The award recipient will be announced at the 2017 NRPA Annual Conference in September.
PARK AND CAPITAL PROJECTS SUMMARY Wills Park: The new batting pavilion at Wills Park was completed in Spring 2017. The City Pool at Wills Park will undergo a major renovation in 2017-2018. The pool is scheduled to close August 1, 2017 to ensure the project is finished in time for the pool to open to the public in May 2018. Webb Bridge Park: Construction of a spectator seating area was completed in Spring 2017. Alpharetta Arts Center: The City will begin development of the new Alpharetta Arts Center located at 238 Canton Street later this year. This will be the home of a variety of existing and expanded cultural arts programs, classes, and events. The current plan is to open the new center in early Summer 2018. Alpharetta Big Creek Greenway: Boardwalk replacements in various locations along the trail continue. City officials are working on plans to extend the northern end of the trail system to connect with Forsyth County’s trail system. Pocket Parks/Neighborhood Parks: In recent months, the City has purchased approximately 25 acres of new park land in various areas of Alpharetta. Public input will be sought prior to any development beginning on these properties. City staff has been working with a design team to develop a comprehensive master plan for Union Hill Park and Windward Soccer Complex. Park System Wayfinding Signage Project: City staff has been working with a design team to redesign the wayfinding guide for the City’s park system and trails. The goal is to provide an intuitive and comfortable navigational experience while creating uniformity in the signage brand. Implementation of the plan will be completed in phases based on available funding.
Alpharetta Bike Share Program: Explore your City of Parks! The City of Alpharetta’s Bike Share Program continues to grow, providing residents and visitors a bike-friendly transportation alternative. In addition to the existing bike docking stations located in designated areas along Alpharetta Big Creek Greenway and Avalon, future docking stations are planned for City Center and Thompson Street Park. All stations will be interconnected allowing users to bike and explore more of Alpharetta. Each user must set up an account at www.zagster.com/Alpharetta. Bikes can be rented by accessing a website account or through Zagster’s mobile app. First 3 hours of use each day are at no cost. Each additional hour is $3, with a cap of $24 per day.

Fall 2017/Winter 2018
Wills Park Equestrian Center
Wills Park Equestrian Center is a unique feature of the Recreation and Parks Department. The center hosts a variety of events including 50 Horse Shows, 14 Dog Agility Shows, and 10 Special Events for the current show season. To view or download a schedule of events, visit the City’s website at www.alpharetta.ga.us. Call 678-297-6120 for more information. Many of these events are free to the public. All events are geared to people of all ages and are held rain or shine. Dust off those boots, put on your fanciest of hats, and make plans to enjoy one of the finest show facilities in the Southeast!
HORSE SHOWS
Horse Shows are the majority of events hosted at the facility. We host local GHJA and Nationally USEFsanctioned (A) rated Hunter Jumper Horseshows. Notable horse shows include Brownwood Farms, Elite Show Jumping, Cheryl & Co., Equus Events, and the Bolshoi Benefit, all of which have hosted shows at the facility for over 25 years. Most of these shows offer free admission so bring the family and enjoy the grace and elegance of horse and rider.
SPECIAL EVENTS
The Animal Rescue Fair is one of the most unique events held at the Center. Over 5,000 people attend this event annually, one of the largest in the Southeast. This event offers a variety of rescue facilities a better way for adoptions. Additional events scheduled for the current season include the 25th Annual North Fulton Cub Scouts Day Camp, and the 3rd Annual Celebrate Freedom Rodeo offering various rodeo disciplines and vendors. We also offer a variety of Private Corporate Rentals during the calendar year.
RIDING PASS
Horse owners may purchase a daily or annual riding pass and must use the facility in accordance with park and riding pass rules and regulations. Passes may be purchased at the Equestrian Center Manager’s Office.
DOG SHOWS
The Dog Show schedule typically runs early spring to late fall and follows the AKC Calendar. Some notable clubs showing this year include Atlanta Obedience, Canine Capers, and Sirius Dog Agility. There are vendors at every show so be sure to bring home the best for your dog. Agility trials are races negotiated over an obstacle of jumps, tunnels, tires, weave poles, and seesaws. The dog with the least faults and best time wins. These are great shows for people who love their canine friends!

Special Recognition
MEET RECREATION COMMISSION MEMBER KEVIN D. JOHNSON Kevin was appointed to the Commission in November 2016. Born in Ohio and raised in Massachusetts, Kevin moved to Alpharetta with his family in 2015, fifteen years after his first visit to Alpharetta. A graduate of Morehouse College where he studied computer science and Spanish, Kevin owns an award-winning marketing and communications firm, Johnson Media Inc., and is a best-selling author of The Entrepreneur Mind. Since college, Kevin has been involved in local government and has assumed various leadership roles. He believes that civic duty is important and that all of those who can serve should serve. Kevin says, “It is an honor and a privilege to serve on the Recreation Commission. The Recreation and Parks Department is in large part the reason that Alpharetta is such a magnificent place to raise a family. It doesn’t get any better than this!” Parents of two young boys, Kevin and his wife, Deidre, of almost ten years are huge fans of and participants in the Alpharetta Youth Baseball Association. When not attending sporting events for their sons, you will find them exploring Wills Park, frequenting the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta Family YMCA, cheering on the Milton Eagles at their games, and supporting many of Alpharetta’s signature events. They also attend services at St. James United Methodist Church located in Alpharetta. Kevin enjoys working with nonprofits, listening to salsa and jazz, playing piano in his Latin band, reading, traveling, and running marathons. The City of Alpharetta welcomes Kevin to the Recreation Commission.
EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION Marketing/Accreditation Coordinator Amy Rickman, Recreation Supervisor Christine Young, and Recreation Coordinator Cara Prell were selected to attend the Leadership GRPA II program held at the 4-H Conference Center in Eatonton, GA in April. This prestigious training opportunity is held annually and limited to 21 recreation and parks professionals from the state of Georgia. Cara also recently completed the requirements to become a nationally Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) and a certified Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO). We congratulate each of these employees on their accomplishments!
