A MESSAGE FROMTHE THE A MESSAGE FROM

Council CouncilLeadership Leadership NORTHEAST GEORGIA COUNCIL

In 2018, the Northeast Georgia Council continued its proud tradition of servicing communities with charter-building programs for young people. With nearly 4,500 dedicated volunteers, a committed staff, and the generosity of supporters, the Council served nearly 25,0000 youth, whose achievements were based in service, leadership, and learning.

Eagle Rank 291 Earned

Arrow of Light Rank 527 Earned

In all our programs, we worked to ensure that every youth could participate, regardless of any financial limitations. As a result of the generosity of our supporters, we were able to meet 100% of the requests for assistance with handbooks, uniforms and camperships. As our communities change, we will continue to pursue innovations in program delivery and content to retain the relevance that Scouting has enjoyed for over 108 years. By working with our educational partners, soliciting feedback from parents and youth, and being dedicated to continuous quality improvements, we are well-positioned to providing even more life-changing experiences. On behalf of the Northeast Georgia Council, we are pleased to present this Annual Report.

Living the Scout Oath and Law Terry Bramlett, past Council President, was a recipient of the Silver Buffalo Award. The Silver Buffalo Award is the highest achievement awarded by Boy Scouts of America National Council for outstanding service to youth at the national level. Terry has made significant contributions to Scouting, developed innovative opportunities for Scouts to participate in local and national conservation events, opened school doors, and spearheaded a state-of-the-art initiative for a Scouting program at the collegiate level. He is also the recipient of the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope Awards. Terry’s meaningful contributions to Scouting will continue to benefit Scouting recruitment efforts and educational relationships for generations.

Luke Flantzer, an Eagle Scout with Troop 404, earned 138 merit badges. Little did he know that when he set a goal to earn all available merit badges that it would become less about the patch on a sash and more about finding his true calling. He found the power of knowing what you want to do so that you can achieve your dreams. Working on merit badges required reaching out to a network of merit badge counselors and getting the opportunity to apply skills in adventure environments. As part of the Inventing Merit Badge, Luke invented a special latch for his dog’s crate preventing his Maltese, Houdini, from breaking free. Luke often remarks that pursuing those merit badges gave him many valuable experiences, and perhaps that’s why he never got into video games.

William Scott Sorrells, past Council President, was a recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Award. This honor is awarded to an Eagle Scout for distinguished service in his profession and to his community for a period of at least 25 years after attaining the level of Eagle Scout. Scott has given distinguished service to his community and nation as a leader at all levels of Scouting. He is also a Silver Buffalo Award recipient. In 2019 he will undertake his greatest Scouting challenge as co-chair of the 24th World Scout Jamboree, that will bring together nearly 50,000 Scouts from 169 International Scout Organizations.

Cutler Shiver, an Eagle Scout with Troop 149, earned 137 merit badges and the Hornaday award. While attending his first summer camp, he was inspired to earn all available merit badges. Cutler learned that setting priorities and developing a pattern of pushing yourself are key skills to complete the goal of earning all available merit badges. The hardest merit badges to earn were backpacking and cycling. “I learned that cycling is harder than you think, but I also learned that if a task is really large, just breaking it up and getting started is the biggest accomplishment.” Cutler states “you have to overcome all sorts of obstacles to earn all available the merit badges.” He did not have a dog which made the Dog Care Merit Badge hard to achieve. He borrowed a dog to complete this merit badge. Scouting gave Cutler the leadership skills that he could not obtain anywhere else.

EAGLE SCOUT

is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America. Since its introduction in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by almost two and a half million young men. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges and demonstrating Scout Spirit through the Boy Scout Oath and Law, service, and leadership. This includes an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads and manages. The Eagle Scout Service Project is the opportunity for a Scout to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of any religious institution, any school, or his community.
