Hon Dr. Jean Augustine has charged all Canadians to be active participants in community affairs. Hon Jean Augustine a former Deputy Speaker in Ottawa admonished every adult Canadian citizen to participate in

decision processes affecting their lives and how they are governed by those they elect into office. Jean Augustine said this recently in Toronto as the Special Guest of Honour and Key Note Speaker at the Gradua-

tion and 10th Anniversary Celebrations of Canada College of Business and Technology. With wrapt attention, her listeners punctuated her every piece of admonition with cheers and clapping of hands.

“Go out there and participate in community work. Volunteer your services. Get involved at every level of decision making and let your voice be heard. Your elected officers and politicians need your input. You should be aware of events cont'd on pg. 5

Joy Adeniyi spoke about challenges facing Private Career Colleges and thanked the Board, Management, Staff and students of the College for their steadfastness and cooperation in the last ten

Chief Adetola Adeniyi expressed concern about the way governments at all levels treat small scale businesses in Canada and advised both provincial and federal governments to ‘stop shifting the goal post in the middle of play’. Our Graduating Youth and future Careers The Spring Season is over and summer has begun. A number of youth and even adults in our community will be graduating from all kinds of academic levels and disciplines. Undoubtedly the largest number of graduates will be youth leaving High School. Others, also a significant number, will be graduating from Colleges and Universities. It is also significant to note that there are a number of adults in the community who have, against daunting odds and challenges, undertaken academic journeys in this country over the past few years. Some of these will be graduating as well from Adult High School, from Trade Schools and from Colleges and Universities as well. To all those who are graduating, The Ghanaian News wish to extend our congratulations to you. Your efforts and sacrifices have not been in vain. We hope that you will find satisfaction in the Diplomas and Degrees that you have obtained, or will soon receive that will spur you on to the next stage of your dreams and careers. We wish to particularly focus our attention on the youth who are graduating from High School this Spring. High School Graduation is a very significant milestone in your life. No meaningful academic journeys can be undertaken in this country and in the Western world without the basic High School Diploma. So to all our youth who have made it this far, we extend our congratulations. Many of you made it through in the face of difficulties and obstacles: from hostile school environments, enduring bullying, isolation from friends, hostility and sometimes misdirection from teachers and guidance counsellors. It is sometimes tempting to decide to take a break after the gruelling High School journey. Some of you may be contemplating taking a year off to work or simply to “rest” before deciding on the next steps in your life or the next step in the academic journey. We wish to strongly caution against any such move. There are countless number of studies, research and statistics which show that many youth who break off after High School to enter the job market find it difficult to re-enter the academic field. Simply put, once you break off your academic journey and enter the labour market, the attraction of the few dollars that you earn will kill the dreams of further and higher education. We therefore strongly entreat all the youth graduating this year to continue on to College, Trade Schools and/or University. Keep studying while your minds are young and fresh. Keep pushing the academic buttons while you have the support of your parents and family. A College Diploma, Trade School Diploma or University Degree is only a few more years away. That will give you more satisfaction. That will offer you a better licence for entry into the labour market. That will secure you better job satisfaction. And that will certainly enable you to earn better incomes than stopping at the gates of High Scholl Graduation.

Opinion/ Commentary Diverse Political Viewpoints Produce Healthy Democratic Outcomes By Kwabena Akuoko Amid unstable political and economic climate, the Rawlings-led junta unenthusiastically initiated “democratic reforms” in 1992. The transition from the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) military government to what is internationally recognised as fairly well-functioning parliamentary democracy in Ghana gradually became possible as a result of persistent international pressure. In the absence of representative democracy, Ghana was ruled by decrees, which had zero tolerance for political dissent. This was exemplified by the common practice in which those the military regime perceived as threat were treated heavy-handedly. We can now only comfort ourselves with the hope that days are perhaps gone for good when citizens were afraid to speak up against their government without being taken away in the middle of the night to unknown destinations and subjected to gross human rights violations. Although Ghana reembraced multi-party democracy approximately two decades ago, many Ghanaians do not seem to have a clear sense of one elemental, yet strong indicator of effective parliamentary system. Many compatriots, including some of our political leaders still have the misplaced idea that simply holding a different political viewpoint is something to be abhorred. Lots of us are yet to grasp the importance of the democratic tenet of citizens’ right to hold alternative views relative to how their country is governed. Words such as enemies, traitors, “greedy bastards”, sellouts, etc. are often used by some public figures to refer to their colleagues simply because of philosophical differences. It defies logic for those who have different political opinions to be discredited or defamed as it has now become customary in Ghana. Former President Rawlings is for instance known for defaming others whose political views are contrary to his. His ongoing animosity towards President Mills from my standpoint presents a clear picture of how difference in opinion is routinely misconstrued. The former president has virtually spoken ill of not only his obvious political

opponents, but interestingly and increasingly, allies ranging from when he first appeared on the political scene in 1979 to date all because of what seems to be his lack of understanding around the relevance of diverse political viewpoints to best democratic outcomes. Mr. Rawlings’s chronic animosity towards others who do not share his political ideas in my view is not surprising given his authoritarian proclivities. He always wants others to understand issues from his entrenched point of view. And amid self-justifying accolades, he frequently uses the socalled June 4 Movement and the 31st December Women’s Movement (dates he unconstitutionally seized power in 1979 and 1981) as platforms to demonize others simply because of differences in political opinions. I particularly find Rawlings’ characterization of Mills as enemy and traitor very peculiar given that the former had hand-picked the latter as vice-president and the two worked together for years. What could have gone wrong for the two allies to become “enemies?” Rawlings’ portrayal of others in extremely negative lights because of legitimate disagreements underscores, and exposes him as a classic dictator. He has amply demonstrated that once a dictator, always a dictator. While Rawlings’ hostility towards Mills stems from genuine political or policy opinion differences, the former president has unceasingly and mistakenly described his current counterpart as a traitor. Evidently, Mr. Rawlings wanted the Mills government to prosecute members of the previous Kuffuor administration for alleged improprieties while in office. But given that such a move would be anti-democratic and potentially tarnish our nation’s democratic reputation, President Mills paid no heed to such vindictive suggestion emanating from Rawlings’ camp of the governing party. Mills’ refusal to go after Kuffuor and others according to reliable sources infuriated Rawlings. This clearly indicates that as a self-styled “democrat”, Rawlings does not have a better sense of the importance of contrary opinions in democracy.

Opinion differences do not make anyone an enemy in a democracy. The notion of competing points of view is in fact healthy for democratic growth. Presumably, Rawlings or Mills and leaders of the various opposition political parties have the best interest of Ghana at heart. They all want our country to succeed albeit different philosophical approaches. It is thus nonsensical for anyone to label others as enemies based on opinion differences. Since representative democracy is still evolving in Ghana, we need to learn how to embrace the concept that the voice of democracy is not exclusive. A well-functioning democracy encompasses many voices, which obviously reflect the executive and legislative branches of government, including various opposition political parties. Such voices are also joined by several other entities including organized labour, professional associations, the news media, scholars and writers, critics, religious leaders and the business community, institutions of higher learning, the student movement and countless interest groups. All these voices work collaboratively to make democracy work well for the benefit of the citizenry. And as a matter of fact, more voices or disagreements and the ability to compromise and reach consensus strengthen the democratic system. It is impractical for every citizen, all political parties and the myriad interest groups to agree on every issue in multi-party parliamentary democratic system. Subsequently, when people hold different views, those on the opposing side should not be unjustly depicted as enemies. Disagreements and constructive criticisms and the ability to resolve issues of national interest amicably make the concept of democracy appealing. We need to understand that an individual or group of people do not have monopoly over what is good for Ghana. Rather than painting their political opponents with negative brush because of opinion differences, those doing the name calling should hold mirrors to their own views and reflect on the contradictions associated with their mistakenly held notion.

Paa Kwesi Nduom Meets Ghanaians in Winnipeg From: Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB

Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom 4th from left meets Ghanaians in Winnipeg.

The Leader of the new fledgling political party in Ghana, the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), and former Presidential candidate for the CPP in the 2008 elections, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom was in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the week of June 26 to participate in the Annual meeting of the ISSD. This is the third time Dr. Nduom has been in Winnipeg to attend this meeting. His term of office on this prestigious International Body ends this year. The meeting of the ISSD was held at the Fairmount Hotel, in Downtown Winnipeg from June 26 to June 29, 2012. Dr. Nduom took the opportunity to meet and interact with some members of the Ghana-

ian Community in Winnipeg to discuss the political situation in Ghana and the focus of his new political party in the coming Parliamentary and Presidential elections in Ghana in December. He appealed to Ghanaians in the Diaspora to get actively involved in the political process including influencing their friends and relatives in Ghana to vote for the “right” people in the coming elections to change the political and economic direction of the country. The Ghanaians he met however expressed deep concerns about the worsening political atmosphere and economic situation in the country. They con-

stantly quizzed Dr. Nduom on what his plans and contributions are to change the tone of politics in Ghana. Dr. Nduom responded that he does not want to focus on the past but he is assembling a capable team of “descent” people as Parliamentary candidates. He said that his political party hopes to field candidates in about 75 constituencies in Ghana in the coming elections with the hope of winning about 25 seats. On the Presidential elections he is hoping, as his party’s Presidential candidate, to garner enough votes to deny any candidate a first round win which will force a run-off in the Presidential elections.

Ghana among world’s 10 worst economies - Forbes Magazine Ghana has the world’s largest manmade lake and the 1-gigawatt Akosombo Hydroelectric Plant, built to supply electricity to Africa’s largest aluminum smelter. But the smelter has been idle since 2009, a casualty of low aluminum prices and persistent electricity shortages that have forced the government to divert the power elsewhere. Ghana is a typical example of the world’s worst-managed economies: It’s a country that shouldn’t be poor, but it is. The West

African nation’s gross domestic product per capita fell 9% last year to $621, ranking it 154th out of 184 countries tracked by the International Monetary Fund, below resource-impoverished Haiti. With a $3 billion trade deficit last year and $4.9 billion in external debt, Ghana is struggling to pay its bills even as it sits on some of the world’s biggest reserves of gold and bauxite, as well as considerable amounts of offshore oil, which is being developed

by Anadarko Petroleum ( APC - news - people ) and others. “Ghana’s problems are mostly homegrown,” said Peter Allum, the IMF’s mission chief to Ghana, in February. Forbes ranks Ghana ninth on our list of the world’s worst economies. As the world focuses on Greece and the rest of the so-called PIIGs—Portugal, Italy and Ireland—in their fight to reverse years of irresponsible fiscal policies, another group of nations make them look positively well-managed. Forbes screened IMF data for countries that have low and declining per-capita GDP, high trade deficits and high inflation, all indicators of bad economic management regardless of the country’s inherent wealth. All have at least one trait in common: Their governments discourage private investment—and economic growth—through policies of crony capitalism, expropriation or arbitrary enforcement of the

laws. That makes it hard to generate hard currency to pay off government debt and discourages citizens from investing in education to improve their own economic lot. “Most of these vulnerably low-income countries are in a trap,” said Otaviano Canuto, vice president and head of the World Bank’s Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Network. “The climate is not conducive to investments, not only in factories and agricultural improvements, but in education.” No surprise as to the winner of this race to the bottom: Zimbabwe, a country where the annual inflation rate hit the surreal level of more than 500 billion percent in late 2008 as the government of dictator Robert Mugabe tried to print his way out of his own mistaken economic policies. Before the fever broke last year, Zimbabwe restaurants felt compelled to post signs reminding patrons not to use the nearly worthless dollar bills as toilet paper. Zimbabwe’s inflation rate has since dropped to around 5% as the country abandoned its currency and allowed transactions to be conducted in U.S. dollars and other currencies. But it still was forced to import 500,000 tons of maize last year to make up for shortfalls in its once-bountiful agricultural sector. Ranking fifth on the list is Nicaragua, the only Latin American country to show such a poisonous combination of poverty and stagnant growth. Nicaragua’s inflation-adjusted GDP fell 1.5% in 2009 and foreign investors

have shunned the country since 1980s socialist President Daniel Ortega returned to office in 2007. Textile manufacturers have closed and European aid agencies balked at supporting the Ortega government after flawed elections in 2008. One reliable source of income in this socialist paradise: remittances from expatriates, which represented 13% of GDP in 2008. In eighth place is Liberia, another resource-rich nation that has mismanaged its way to poverty through decades of corruption and civil war. The country has been relatively stable since 2005 and may achieve 6% GDP growth this year. But that’s a GDP of less than $900 million, with rubber exports the single largest source of foreign currency at $170 million. Registrations of foreign ships brings in another $18 million, hardly enough to make a dent in the country’s $3.4 billion debt. Last year commercial creditors agreed to call it even at 3 cents on the dollar, possibly allowing Liberia to begin the cycle of borrowing and defaulting anew. Some economic growth is expected after Arcelor Mittal ( MT news - people ) begins shipping iron ore from the Yekapi complex in 2011. Eritrea also has a history of war, which might explain its per-capita GDP of $363, ranking it 176th out of 185 countries and seventh on Forbes’ list of the world’s worst economies. Bad government plays a role, too. The agricultural sector employs 80% of the workers in this East African state, which gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993, but

generates only 12% of GDP. The ruling PFDJ party has “imposed an arbitrary and complex set of regulatory requirements” that discourage foreign and domestic investment, and frequently expropriates property, the U.S. State Department says. “Poverty by itself is not a sufficient condition for conflict,” said Canuto of the World Bank. “But whenever you have a situation of conflict and poverty together, the country is trapped.” Sixth-place Burundi, like many of the countries on this list, has another big problem: bloated government payrolls. The IMF estimates government wages account for 12% of GDP, but 63% of the population remains undernourished. The country, still recovering from years of civil war, needs $5.8 billion in infrastructure but will be hard-pressed to pay for it with just $68 million in exports—most of it coffee—and $275 million in imports last year. A 24% domestic inflation rate doesn’t help. The global financial crisis does offer some signs of hope that perennially mismanaged countries can change their ways. Other than Nicaragua and Venezuela, most of the Latin American nations muddled through the crisis without their historical reliance on hyperinflation and default. “That had a lot to do with macroeconomic policies,” said Canuto, who cited Mexico, Brazil and Uruguay as being particularly well managed. “Latin America has learned a hard lesson on the benefits of cutting this serial default behavior.”

The Ghanaian News June 2012

Ghana elected to UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women Ghana has been elected a member of the United Nations’ Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). This follows the election of Miss Hilary Amesika Gbedemah, a lawyer and gender consultant in a fiercely contested election at the UN Headquarters, New York, by the 187 states parties present and voting. By this election, Ghana joins 10 other elected memberstates that will spearhead the activities of this worldwide body from January, 2013. The Committee will monitor the implementation of national

measures in eliminating discrimination against women. It is also empowered to make recommendations on any issue affecting women to which it believes the State parties should devote more attention. The CEDAW, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1979 is often described as an international bill of rights of women. The convention defines what constitutes discrimination against women and also sets up an agenda for national action to end such discrimination. It defines discrimination against women as “any distinction, exclusion or restric-

tion made on the basis of sex which has the effect or purpose of impairing or nullifying the recognition, enjoyment or exercise by woman, irrespective of their marital status, on a basis on equality of men and women of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, civil or any other field.” Miss Gbedemah, who is rector of the Law Institute in Ghana, said her election was a confirmation of the high respect Ghana had earned and the recognition that Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations had carved for itself at the comity of nations. An elated Miss Gbedemah

praised Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the UN for its tireless efforts leading to her victory, as well as those who mentored her in the process and “hoped that Ghana will seize this opportunity to enact more pace-setting legislation on gender equality”. Describing her endorsement as “a commitment to women’s human rights”, she said it was “an opportunity to articulate and implement issues that affect women, apart from enhancing the advocacy role of civil society in advancing women’s rights.” The committee will be in office for four years and at each of its sessions, “the Commit-

tee reviews national reports submitted by the States parties within one year of ratification or accession, and thereafter every four years. These reports, which cover national action taken to improve the situation of women, are presented to the Committee by Government representatives. “In discussions with these officials, the CEDAW experts comment on the report and obtain additional information. This procedure of actual dialogue, developed by the Committee, has proven valuable because it allows for an exchange of views and a clearer analysis of anti-discrimination

policies in the various countries. Among other things, the committee is also empowered to consider complaints submitted by individuals or organizations alleging violations of the convention in states that are party to the convention of the Optional Protocol. The Protocol entitles the committee on its own motion to inquire into grave or systematic violations of the convention in those states parties Other countries whose representatives were elected are Nigeria, China, Italy, Brazil, Lebanon and France. The rest are Qatar, Jamaica, Lithuania and Finland. GNA

As state loses revenue Anti-corruption campaign group, Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has asked Castle, the Seat of Government, to desist from auctioning seized cars. “Auctioning of confiscated cars is the job of the Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority. It is therefore unlawful for Castle to undertake such an exercise,” the Executive Secretary of GII, Vitus Azeem, has explained while challenging the Revenue Authority to be bold and stand on

Castle Hot Over Seized Cars its feet against the act. Vehicles are subject to seizure when importers are unable to clear them at the port. Such cars are disposed of by the Confiscated Vehicles Allocation Committee of which Carl Wilson was chairman, until the supporters of the ruling National Democratic Government called for his head some few month ago. Disposal of seized cars, which under the previous government yielded revenue to the state, has failed to do so under the current dispensation, as

the cars are mostly allocated to cronies of government and party stalwarts, with nothing going into the state kitty. Some Officers of the Customs Division had complained bitterly that the interference into their duties by the Seat of Government is not only affecting their work, but it is also causing the country to lose huge revenue as the tokens normally taken by the castle operatives does not enter government coffers. Mr. Azeem questioned: “If someone import a car into

the country and he/she is being asked to pay taxes of GH¢ 4,000 and is not able to pay and therefore the Customs Division confiscate the car, he queried, why should this car be auctioned at a price far lower than even the taxes imposed on the car not to talk of the price and importation cost of the car?” He lamented further: “ those cars are even at times used for commercial purposes whiles, some government agencies and heads of department mostly at the district level do not even have cars to

perform their work.” He said the Revenue Authority had to sit up and do what they are mandated to do. “Do not sit down and allow some people out of their own selfish interest to loot the country of huge revenue,” he charged the Authority. It was revealed that between November 25 and December 1 2009, the National Security Council had been allocated a total number of 257 vehicles from the confiscated car pool at the Jubilee and Safe Bond car parks at

Tema and Takoradi ports. According to reliable sources, the cars did not get to the persons to whom they had been allocated, as most were non-existence. The cars, ferried away through the National Security apparatus conduit, were allocated to single names. Original car owners had in some instances been spotted, hands on their heads, wailing as their vehicles were driven away by the new owners at ridiculous prices. Some importers who spoke to Economy Times noted that, they often see their cars on the road and when they try to find out how the new owners got them, it turns out to be that, castle operatives had issued a chit to such person at a mere amount which is far lower than the amount of tax the importer of the car was asked to pay. Under the previous administration, car owners were given extension periods of up to 90 days to raise money and pay their duties after the expiration of the mandatory 60 days; but now, immediately the 60 days expired, members of the Castle syndicate pounced on the cars and drove them away in the name of the National Security. Graduation! Graduation!! Graduation!!! ‘Ayekoo’ Graduates of 2012! By Joe Kingsley Eyiah, OCT, Brookview Middle School, Toronto “History has demonstrated that the most notable winners usually encountered heartbreaking obstacles before they triumphed. They won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats.”-B. C. Forbes The month of June every year brings to an end the academic year in most countries around the world. Around that time schools hold graduation ceremonies mostly for their final year students who are either moving on to high level on the education ladder or entering the working world. This June, I was fortunate to be at a High School graduation and a Middle School graduation in Toronto. At both ceremonies I was proud to see some Ghanaian-Canadian students walk the dais to receive their diplomas! I could see the joy in the eyes of the parents who

were present to support their children on such memorable occasion during one’s education journey known as GRADUATION. Graduation is a benchmark of student achievement, and therefore it is NOT wrong to celebrate such success in grand

style at every ‘growth’ on the educational ladder! Others refer to graduation as ‘the action of receiving or conferring an academic degree or the ceremony that is sometimes associated, where students become Graduates. Graduation ceremonies usually include a procession of the academic staff and candidates. Speeches are given at the ceremonies by speakers such as the heads of the institution, renowned educationists, politicians and most importantly valedictorians chosen from among the graduating classes. Another important landmark of most graduations is the theme selected for

the ceremony. Each year, teachers and graduating classes work hard to get suitable themes. For example, this year at Brookview Middle School in Toronto, the theme selected for our graduation ceremony is: The Future is Now, Seize the Moment! Expanding on such a theme students wrote this: If you dare to seize the moment it shall lead you to accomplishment. Yet many people are afraid of achieving their dreams by themselves! But you are not alone, for, your friends have grown and shown As Michael Jackson once sung, “You are not alone I am here with you though we are far apart You are always in my heart” They continued:

Your friends will be there for you-always a member of your “middle school” crew! So don’t let moving forward pull you down For you are graduating with honors and a gown Carrying unforgettable memories as you seize opportunities. In the United States, besides “commencement,” the term “graduation” is also used in schools below university level such as the high school, middle school and even kindergarten and preschool ceremonies. In Japan, graduation ceremonies are in March followed by entrance ceremonies in April. This coincides with the Japanese school calendar and the Japanese government fiscal year. Graduation is also related to the changing of the seasons and is often reflected in the ceremony

decor and related advertising (i.e. new uniforms, backpacks, school supplies...). In our motherland, Ghana, less or no attention is given to graduation ceremonies until one reaches the tertiary level of education. Graduation! Graduation!! Graduation!!! To me as an educationist, graduation ceremonies officially mark the ‘growth’ that a student attains at different levels of his/her education journey. Graduates from Middle School and High School, in particular, should not be complacent of their ‘growth’ and rest on their oars as they journey on! Graduation is a ‘growth’ that comes with responsibility. I take this opportunity to congratulate all graduates of 2012. To all I say “AYEKOO”!

The Artiste Known as Kwabena Jay Ghanaian musical history in the Diaspora has changed from those of Burgher highlife to the introduction of rap and for the past couple of years a new variant of hip-pop known in Ghana and Africa is hip-life music has almost overtaken the music scene in Ghana. The music is notably a blend of hip pop, Twi rap and highlife music. From the days of Regie Rockstone, the noted and undisputed God father of Ghanaian Twi rap/ hip-life to present day Sarkodie with his Azonto fad, GhanaianCanadian musicians are creating a hip–life hub of their own outside Ghana and on the Africa continent at large. From the likes of Spek Won to Kcasty Luu, hip life is on the verge of explosion in Canada thanks also to G98.5 M.C Bonde. We enjoy their music, they are lyrically creative, we love seeing them on stage, but who are these Ghanaian Canadian hip life artistes? Kwabena Jay christened as James Opoku is of Ghanaian heritage from

Asante Mampong. He migrated to Canada as a young child, however, he was sent back to Ghana in his teenage years to complete his senior secondary school at Kumasi ASS. Presently, he is completing his degree at Wilfred Laurie University in Human Behavior and Psychology. Many young Ghanaian youth have fallen prey to the system. The timely intervention of his parents to send him schooling in Ghana has enabled Kwabena Jay to be the man he is today. He enjoys making music, the thrill on stage and the rush makes it worthwhile. Kwabena Jay performs in both Twi and English. His primary musical influence is Lord Kenya. Other musical influences include 4x4, Kwa Kese, Sarkodie. In an interview with The Ghanaian News, Kwabena acknowledges that with hip life, the rap style and story line is unique. How did he come by the name “Kwabena Jay? He says he was born on a Tuesday hence the name

Kwabena and Jay (James) is what his friends call him, so he decided to use both names

ing music in a genre that is hardly known by the general music population. Likewise, some of these

for his craft. In response to what challenges hip life artistes face in Canada or the West, Kwabena points out that there are challenges being a Black artist in Canada, not to talk about being Ghanaian and mak-

challenges, Kwabena remarks, are in part due to lack of support from family and friends and the general Ghanaian-Canadian population who sometimes downplay one’s musical abilities. Not to say the least, there is a lim-

ited market or almost nonexistent hip-life market in Canada. The mission is to make hip-life known all over the world. That is one aim that most hip-life artists agree on. On his views on highlife music, he says that highlife music makes sense, in that there is a message attached to the music. They speak of the conditions at the time the music was made. Many people identify with the story line of the musicians. Highlife is one of the best genres of music in Ghana. As to whether he fears that hip life will lose its uniqueness, Kwabena Jay recognizes that Ghanaian music is in transition, the music is breaking away from the old, yet there is a bridge which goes back and forth. Likewise, the blend of different cultures impact on the hip-life. Hence, there is a strong need to keep the high life base and the unique Ghanaian rhythm that comes with it. How does he define his success in music? Kwabena Jay counts his musical success at

present with the collaboration with VIP, “PUT IT ON ME”. He also shared the stage with VIP on their North American Tour here in Toronto at the ROX and the Ghana Summer Jam in New York City. Kwabena Jay identifies himself as a Trendsetter on the Canadian hip-life scene. He wants to be identified as the “guy who brought something new to the table not as a follower.” Knowing that life has changed and realities have changed, Kwabena agrees with making music that is relevant to the present. He says that he makes music focusing on love and compassion, pointing out that good music to helps us forget about hardships. The music MY LOVE is about a young man watching a beautiful girl at a party. When asked about his artistic message, Kwabena Jay gears towards happy music, music that is reflective of the human condition, music to help people stay positive and share their love.

main standards for measuring time on earth: solar time, based on the rotation of the earth, and International Atomic Time, which relies on the pulsation of atoms to measure time with near-perfect accuracy. The earth takes just over 86,400 seconds for a full 360-degree revolution, but the gravitational pull of ocean tides, the sun and the moon all affect its rotation ever so slightly. This has led to a creeping discrepancy between the two times, which the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) decided to start fixing in 1971 with

the introduction of leap seconds. A total of 24 leap seconds have been added to the clock since.

These leap seconds must be inserted every 1 to 2 years to avoid solar time and atomic time from spreading too far apart, according to the IERS.

This has us wondering about the impact of one second in the course of a person’s life.

However, due to an unusual temporary acceleration of the Earth, no leap seconds were needed between 1998 and 2005. The last leap second occurred at the end of December in 2008. This weekend’s leap second will effectively make the last minute of June 61 seconds, instead of the

Wine lovers limited by provinces despite federal change There are far more reforms needed to Canadian liquor laws, advocates say, despite a federal change that was meant to make it easier for wine lovers to import the product from other provinces. Bill C-311, sponsored by B.C. MP Dan Albas, became law on Thursday, making it legal under federal law to take wine from one province to another. But the law specifies that it’s limited according to the law in the province to which the wine is being imported. Those laws vary, and in some places aren’t at all clear, said Mark Hicken, a lawyer specializing in wine law. “Consumers in Alberta and Manitoba are immediately freed from the

shackles of the Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act,” the prohibition-era law that limits the movement of liquor, Hicken said. “The situation in the other provinces is a little bit more complicated — some do have laws that restrict amounts that can be imported into the province or they restrict the possession of imported liquor from outside the province, so each province has to be looked at kind of carefully on a one-by-one basis in order to figure out what the effect is in each province.” Rather than repealing the decades-old law that prohibited alcohol, the government adds exemptions. Bill C-311 has added an exemption for wine so that consumers

can, depending on provincial law, take wine from one province to another. It’s expected to help wineries sell more of their product in Canada instead of looking for international customers. Conservative MPs referred to it as wine freedom. But it’s not as simple as it sounds, with each province setting its own laws for how much residents can import. The law in Ontario, for example, isn’t clear. Hicken said the Liquor Control Board of Ontario has set a policy but he can’t find a matching statute or regulation to back it. It also seems to say that consumers can bring the wine with them, saying nothing about whether they can have it shipped from another province. British Columbia recently cont'd on pg. 22

Lakeside Estates provides affordable housing units Lakeside Estate has taken another step again towards the provision of affordable housing within the Greater Accra Region with the construction of the one bedroom expandable house at Ashale-Botwe. The Acting Managing Director of Lakeside Estate, Salah Kalmoni says the one bedroom semi-detached house which has a living areas, toilet, bedroom, kitchen yard and front terrace forms part of their strategies to reduce the housing deficit in Ghana. He noted that the firm has completed and furbished 41 houses out of the proposed 81 houses in the estate. According to him, Lakeside Estate built and sold 110 houses last year making their decade of establishment in the country.

Salah Kalmoni made these statements at the official inauguration of the onebedroom expandable housing units at Lakeside Estate in Accra. He stated that the leading estate firm has targeted building 10,000 houses in the next 10 years to reduce housing deficit in the Urban Centres. He disclosed that Lakeside Estate will be listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange in the three years. The President of the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA), Alex Tweneboa observed that government has not been supportive in providing affording housing for the people. He therefore appealed to the government to partner

private estate developers to provide low cost affordable houses for the public. He stated that 80% of Ghanaians cannot afford to buy a house at US$15,000 therefore the government needs to strengthen publicprivate partnership to house Ghanaians. Tweneboa also appealed to government to extend tax holidays to private real estate developers that provides affordable housing units for Ghanaians. According to him, the current tax regime does not make it possible for private real estate developers who do not partner with the Ministry of Works and Housing to benefit from the tax exemption being enjoyed by developers who partner with the ministry. cont'd on pg. 24

Federal Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is putting the brakes on new applications under two programs popular with people wanting to come to Canada from abroad. Kenney told a Calgary business audience that the government is placing a moratorium on the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Immigrant Investor Program. Both were scheduled to reopen for applications at the end of the month. He says he hopes the programs will be revamped by the end of the year. Ottawa has already legislated away a seven-year backlog of people who applied to get into Canada before rules were rejigged. Kenney had already announced plans to overhaul the investor program in the spring and his intention is to consult with stakeholders, the provinces and territories on how best to reform it. Legislation to Protect Canada’s Immigration System Receives Royal Assent Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney today welcomed the final passage and Royal Assent of legislation that will protect and improve Canada’s immigration system. “This legislation will help stop foreign criminals, human smugglers and those with unfounded refugee claims from abusing Canada’s generous immigration system and receiving taxpayer funded health and social benefits,” said Minister Kenney. “Canada’s immigration and refugee system is one of the most fair

and generous in the world and will continue to be so under the new and improved system.” The Protecting Canada’s Immigration System Act brings further reforms to the asylum system. These changes will provide faster protection to those who genuinely need it by reducing the time it takes to review and decide a refugee claim. There will be faster removal of those who don’t require protection and limited access to appeal mechanisms for failed refugee claimants who come from generally non-refugee producing countries.

With the Balanced Refugee Reform Act and today’s legislation, the provinces and territories are expected to save in the range of $1.65 billion over five years in social assistance and education costs. The new measures also address the heinous crime of human smuggling by making it easier to prosecute human smugglers and impose stiffer penalties. “Human smuggling is one of the most dangerous forms of migration,” said Minister Kenney. “Every year people die in human smuggling operations around the world. These new measures send a

eased its law, but Hicken said it’s poorly worded and limits the amount of out-ofprovince wine people can possess at one time. System ‘completely out of step’ Both provinces allow consumers to bring a case of wine with them from another province. “Canada’s current liquor regulatory system is just completely out of step with the rest of the world in terms of Canadians’ inability to purchase wine from another place within their own country. That problem just doesn’t exist in nearly every country in the world,” Hicken said. “This bill provides a small amount of reasonable progress in the right direction and I think that it would be very sad if the provinces did not embrace the spirit of the bill and realize how helpful it is on a national basis.” Winemakers aren’t the only ones who wanted changes to the law. Steve Beauchesne, co-founder of Beau’s All-

Natural Brewing Company, said it doesn’t seem like anyone’s enforcing the law, but he’d like to see an exemption for breweries too. “I’m glad there is [an exemption for wineries] and I wish there was one for beer,” Beauchesne said. “I think it’s particularly odd that they singled out wine and didn’t include, not just beer, but spirits and ciders and everything else that Canada makes and should be included.” Provincial boundaries hard to cross There’s a much bigger problem for craft brewers than single consumers crossing borders, said Beauchesne, who is trying to break out of his home province. Beau’s Vankleek Hill, Ont., location is about an hour from Montreal and 20 kilometres from the Quebec border, but it’s been next to impossible to get his beer to restaurants or into the province’s SAQ liquor stores. Different regulations make it difficult for brewers in either province to cross the border.

“We’re supposed to be one country here and it makes no sense that there’s so [many] barriers to move from one province to the next,” he said. “The biggest issue for any small brewery, small winery, small distillery, is access to customers.” Beauchesne said his local Member of Provincial Parliament, Liberal Grant Crack, has been supportive, but he doesn’t have any sway with the Quebec government. His MP, Conservative Pierre Lemieux, also supports his cause, he said, but the problem needs the federal government to solve it. Beau’s has been in business six years but still hasn’t been able to crack the Quebec market. “For us to sell beer in Quebec, the easiest way to do it would be to export it into Vermont and then have it imported into Quebec afterwards. Because of all the free-trade agreements, it’s actually easier for American breweries to get across the border than Quebec breweries,” he said. Cbc news

clear message to human smugglers that Canada’s generosity will not be abused, that we will enforce our immigration laws against human smugglers.” Under the new measures, the Minister of Public Safety will be able to designate the arrival of a group of persons into Canada as an irregular arrival, and make those involved subject to the Act’s measures such as detention for individuals aged 16 and older. These individuals may be released from detention by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada when it conducts detention reviews within 14 days and every six months thereafter, or following acceptance of their refugee claim. Individuals may also be released from detention by the Minister if he/she is satisfied that the reasons for detention no longer exist or that there are exceptional circumstances that warrant release. The changes also prevent people who come to Canada as part of a designated irregular arrival from applying for permanent resident status for a period of five years. This means that they would be unable to sponsor family members during that time. The new measures also require biometric data to be included as part of a temporary resident visa application, work permit, and study permit. Travellers, students and workers from certain visa-required countries and territories will be required to provide their fingerprints and have their photo taken before they arrive in Canada. “With these changes, the integrity of Canada’s immigration programs and the safety and security of Canadians will be protected,” said Minister Kenney. Some of these new measures come into effect immediately, while others will come into effect later this year at a date that will be determined by the government. The new biometric measures will come into effect in 2013. Marketwire

IMMIGRATION AND SOCIAL ISSUES By: James A. Kwaatemg, B.A. (Hons), LLB (Hons)

Temporary Pause on acceptance of new Sponsorship Applications for parents and grandparents and the newly-introduced Super Visas The Canadian Government has been expressing concerns about the buildup of “an unmanageable number of new applications” to sponsor parents and grandparents. On November 4, 2011, the Government indicated there was a 165,000strong backlog of parent and grandparent applicants. It was indicated further that wait times for Family Class sponsorship applications for parents and grandparents now exceed seven years. This situation has necessitated a temporary pause of up to 24 months on the acceptance of new sponsorship applications for parents and grandparents effective November 5, 2011. To minimize the impact of the long wait times, backlog and the resultant temporary pause on the acceptance of new sponsor-

multiple-entry visa will provide multiple entries for a period of up to ten years with the status periods for each entry lasting up to two years.

ship applications in the parent and grandparent category, the Government has introduced the new “Parent and Grandparent Super Visa”. It is a fast way of uniting with relatives in Canada and living with them over a considerably long period of time instead of waiting for years to get sponsorship applications processed. Under the Super Visa application system, one may apply for a single-entry visa for two years or apply for a multiple-entry visa for up to ten years, the fees payable depending on what you want. A Super Visa in form of a

To apply for the Super Visa, the applicant, apart from being the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, must be determined to be a genuine visitor and be medically admissible to Canada. Additionally, there must be a written commitment of financial support from their child or grandchild in Canada who should necessarily meet a minimum income threshold determined from time to time by the Immigration. Parents and grandparents applying for the Super Visa must also provide a proof that they have a private medical insurance with a minimum coverage of $100,000

valid for a minimum of one year from a Canadian insurance company covering health insurance, hospitalization and repatriation. The insurance should be valid for each entry to Canada and available for review by a port of entry officer. One should not mistake a Super Visa for a sponsorship application. They are not the same even though the two may share some common attributes. Like sponsorship applications, Super Visa applicants are required to complete an Immigration Medical Examination. However, unlike sponsorship applications, Super Visa applicants are required to obtain a private medical insurance and dependants of the applicants are not eligible to accompany the applicants. Only the parent’s spouse or common-law partner can ac-

company the parent under this provision. The dependants are however eligible to apply for regular visitor visas. Also, unlike sponsorship applications, Super Visa applicants, as visitors, must demonstrate that they will leave Canada by choice at the end of the visa. In determining the likelihood of Super Visa applicants leaving Canada voluntarily at the end of the visa, officers may consider, among other things, the applicant’s ties to the home country, the purpose of the visit, the applicant’s family and financial situation, the overall economic and political stability of the home country and an invitation from a Canadian host, just like an application for a regular visitor permit. It may be worth weighing the benefits and disadvan-

tages of the Super Visa against those of the regular single visitor visas, regular multiple-entry visas and actual sponsorship applications filed on behalf of parents and grandparents (which are currently temporarily halted by the Immigration) before a decision on filing the application is made. And it might also be necessary or advisable to contact a specialist in Immigration Law for some discussion before you take such decisions and file such applications. James A. Kwaateng, is an Immigration Law practitioner with offices located at 168A Oakdale Road, Suite 4, Toronto, Ontario. For thorough discussion of your immigration and related social and legal issues, contact him at telephone number (416) 743-2758.

He reiterated that the current policy should be extended to all other real estate developers who support the policy of affordable housing for Ghanaians. A representative of the Ministry of Works and Housing, Stella Atiaba said government has created the necessary environment for the real estate industry to strive and be competitive. It is estimated that about 41.6% of Ghanaians live in rented apartment because of inability

to own their home. But Atiaba noted that the figure is under studied and very soon the government would outline measures to help public workers secure their own homes. The houses have safety features including secret and elevated ring beams for earthquake resistance and

Deputy Managing Director of Lakeside Estate, PrinceJoseph Ayiku, said mortgage facilities are available for young professionals who intend to purchase anu of the organization’s houses. Tracing the bitter truth of chocolate and child labour This Easter, Britons will eat their way through 80m chocolate eggs without the slightest taste of how the essential ingredient in our favourite treat is harvested. The truth, as BBC Panorama reporter Paul Kenyon discovered when he posed as a cocoa dealer in West Africa, leaves a bitter taste. In an investigation into the supply chain that delivers much of the chocolate sold in the UK - more than half a million tonnes a year - the BBC found evidence of human trafficking and child slave labour. Panorama also found that there is no guarantee, despite safeguards, even with chocolate marketed as Fairtrade, that child labour - as defined by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) - has not been involved in the supply chain. By the time it hits the High Street, cocoa becomes increasingly hard to trace. As it passes from farmer to buyer to wholesalers, exporters, importers and manufacturers, on the journey from cocoa pod to dried bean to chocolate bunny, it becomes more and more likely that the source of the bean will be lost. Together, Ghana and Ivory Coast produce 60% of the

world’s cocoa. More than 10m people survive off the industry. In a village in Ghana, Kenyon met 12-year-old Ouare Fatao Kwakou, who was sold to traffickers by his uncle and taken from neighbouring and impoverished Burkina Faso to work as a cocoa picker. Ouare Fatao was taken from Burkina Faso and sold as a cocoa picker More than a year later, he had not been paid a penny for his work - the profits of his labour going instead to his new cocoa masters and to the uncle who sold him. In the port city of San Pedro in Ivory Coast, Kenyon posed as a trader and sold on cocoa beans which had been produced by the worst forms of child labour. It is at this point where the traceability of the cocoa ends and it can be sold on to major chocolate makers worldwide who cannot say how it was sourced. The end buyer of Kenyon’s child labour beans was one of the world’s biggest exporters who in turn sells it on to several well known High Street names. Panorama has seen documents which show that in September 2009, the Fairtrade cocoa cooperative in Ghana which sup-

plies Cadbury and Divine, suspended seven out of 33 of their cocoa farming communities in one of its 52 major growing districts in the country after they were found to be using the worst forms of child labour. The co-operative, Kuapa Kokoo, is supplied by 1,200 different cocoa communities, known as societies, that are made up of more than 45,000 farmers. Following remedial action by Kuapa Kokoo, the Fairtrade suspension was lifted in early January. The co-operative said it is the only time that it has failed an audit of its farmers’ practices with respect to child labour in 15 years as a Fairtrade supplier. Harriet Lamb, executive director of the Fairtrade Foundation in the UK, said the suspension of farming communities that are suspected of using child labour is evidence that the Fairtrade system is working. It means that unlike other chocolate products, Fairtrade cocoa is traceable to the source farm and action can be taken when bad practices are uncovered, as happened in the case of Kuapa Kokoo. Cocoa beans are dried in the hot sun before being sold on to wholesalers “We make sure in that case

that absolutely we’re not selling any cocoa on Fairtrade terms while we put in place the systems and structures to stop it happening again,” she said of the recent seven suspensions.

In a statement to Panorama, Cadbury said it had not been supplied with any cocoa beans from any of the seven communities in question either before or during the suspension. It said: “The fact that child

labour issues were identified… is evidence the Fairtrade certification process is working.” In Ivory Coast, Panorama met a farmer who relies on his eight-year-old brother and 11year-old son to help harvest the cont'd on pg. 30

TALKING FINANCES Lifestyle Maintenance, Finance and Love By: Gabriel Quayson, Toronto Love of money “is the root of half the evil; lack of money is the root of the other half.” Both these statements are generally true. The lack of money has its ills, but philosophers agree that it is not to the same extent as the greed/love for money. Extreme poverty, destitution, and starvation prompt individuals to resort to every conceivable method to gain money anyhow from anywhere, regardless of the violations of laws and of the principles of morality. The implications of the first statement is obvious: The love and lure of wealth generally prompt people to resort to all sorts of malpractices, such as hoarding, deception, sexual immorality, greed, dishonesty, impaired judgement and incremental lowering of moral standards. Increasing the standard of living is generally welcomed and enjoyed by all members of a family who are fortunate to be the recipients. As the increases in financial abundance are realized, bigger homes, cars and toys are purchased to the delight of all family mem-

bers. Just like any business cycle, there are periods Growth, Peak and eventually, Decline/contraction. The decline period is extremely problematic for many. They are not sure how to scale down the acquisition and entourage they surrounded themselves with during the growth and peak periods. Every possession acquired in their life is important to them. They are stuck on what or who to eliminate. In their minds, it is not even a choice between the frying pan or fire, rather the fire or fire. Consequently, they stay static until circumstances force them to adapt or perish. As indicated previously, love of, or lack of money will force individuals to violate their morality and societal standards. During a period of family financial contraction, those that are immobilized on how to scale down, will eventually evolve and become Lifestyle Prostitutes. They come in many professions. Most obvious are the movie stars, musicians, athletes and Hollywood couples. Such individuals might not have had a music hit

in years, or encounter circumstances that have changed their financial status. Yet, they insist on maintaining the established lifestyle acquired during the peak period until most of their resources are used up. They are not able to adjust their lifestyles to their new lower financial level. They will continue to maintain the lifestyle of the peak period spending level until they crash (bankruptcy) or find any partner that appears to be financially well off. They will pretend they are in love with such individual to receive financial rewards to maintain their lifestyle. Consequently, they become Lifestyle Prostitutes. In reality, they are in need of someone to ease the financial burden they have created for themselves.

In the most recent NBA strike of 2012 season, some players motioned to disband their collective bargain representatives because negotiations were taking too long. One particular player indicated his auto insurance payment for his vehicles is $22,000 per month and could not afford to be without a pay cheque for long. He further reiterated, whatever is offered by the owners bargain representatives will be acceptable to him. This player could not scale down because he had become a prostitute to his lifestyle. In Hollywood, some individuals have convinced themselves that the life style achieved during their peak financial period is an entitlement. To maintain that entitlement, genuine love for one another is not a factor anymore. Even married individuals are on constant view over the neighbour’s yard and so appreciative of the perceived green lawn. It never occurs to them that if they threw some fertilizer on their side they might get similar results. These prostitutes monitor their neighbourhood to see who they

Youth Hardest Hit by Canada’s Slow Job Growth

Unexpected illnesses bring unexpected costs: Critical Illness Protection By: Marian Ayiku-Teye, B.Adm

By Kwabena Akuoko, MSW, RSW, Toronto

The hope that the youth employment rate will soon improve and catch up with the adult job growth now seems to be a dim reality for the vast majority of our young people. This bleak actuality is reflected on Statistics Canada’s May 2012 report, which indicates that close to one million Canadian youth are currently jobless. According to the federal agency, this represents 14% of all young Canadians between the 15 and 29 age bracket who are unemployed. The same report further states the jobless situation is even terrible for those young folks who are between the ages of 15 and 24. In fact, there are 27,000 fewer young Canadians between 15 and 24 years of age that have jobs right now compared to the same period last year. Also, a recent Toronto Dominion (TD) report explains the unemployment situation more clearly by contending that young Canadian workers continue to hold the short end of the stick in terms of their labour market participation rate. Job growth has virtually been nonexistent for the vast majority of young Canadians. Contrary to the adult unemployment situation that keeps getting better at snail pace rate, the youth unemployment rate continues to take a nose dive or at best, stagnated. It is almost 50% higher than that of adults’ unemployment rate. And as the summer season unfolds, the gloomy situation would only get worse because it thus appears that there is no end in sight for the stagnated employment growth for young Canadians compared to their adult counterparts. Besides those young people who have been unemployed for a significant period of time and actively continue to look for jobs, their counterparts who have been on full-time studies are about to join the highly competitive youth job market and that will only make a bad situation worse. It is no surprise that many of them have decided not look for the non-existing jobs. Another worrisome aspect of the youth unemployment picture has to do with what experts have termed as NEET or Not in Employment Education or Training. This means that the youth unemployment situation is even terrible when those who have given up looking for jobs are accurately factored in the unemployment data. Right now, there are close to one million young Canadians who fit into the NEET category and the latest available data indicates that only 390,000 have been actively looking for employment. The rest have essentially given up and the sad fact of the staggering statistics is that a significant part of the youth unemployment population is not in school or any type of training. It would thus seem that the unemployment data does not tell the full extent of the problem. Surely, looking for a job could be stressful for even mature and expe-

rience workers and let alone youth. Job search these days is thus extremely nerveracking for young people who are attempting to land their first jobs. Without steady or meaningful jobs for young Canadians, even those who have college diplomas and university degrees have resorted to low-paying part-time and seasonal jobs. Others have creatively or conveniently become entrepreneurs while many have also decided to pursue advance degrees to prepare for, and in hope to optimize their employment options in the foreseeable future. This trend is clearly consistent with Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) recent study, which states young people stay in school much longer and it now takes an average of a decade after graduation from post-secondary studies for a young person to secure a permanent employment in his or her chosen field. While the Canadian youth unemployment rate is high, it remains the second lowest in the G8 countries, second only to Germany, which currently stands at 11.7%. In an essence, Canada’s youth unemployment situation is not bad at all compared to Spain and New Zealand for instance, which have respective staggering 44% and 29% youth unemployment rates. This is a clear indication that while the situation in Canada is as bleak as it is, it could have been even worse. The dismal youth employment situation is explained by combinations of factors and one specific and obvious fact that cannot be overlooked is that because of the lack of meaningful employment opportunities due the slow recovering global economic recession of which Canada is immune, adult workers have been settling for low-paying, seasonal and part-time jobs, which are traditionally the gateway to future meaningful employment for youth. The outcome of adult and young workers competing for the same jobs is obvious. Given the resources involved in training young and inexperienced workers, many employers in almost every sector of the economy choose to hire experienced adult jobseekers over their young counterparts. This is certainly one of the driving forces behind the current depressing youth employment record. In the best of economic times, youth are the last to be considered for job opportunities and correspondingly, they are the first to let go in terms of retrenchment. Hopefully, the economy will soon improve for the labour market to absorb the army of unemployed young Canadians. When a huge segment of the youth population is unemployed, it does not take long before disgruntlement and hopelessness rear their ugly heads. Record high of youth unemployment rate is an economic deficit, which warrants attention from all levels of government.

Serious illnesses, including cancer, heart disease, and stroke, are the leading health issues facing Canadians today. The costs of recovering from a serious illness may put your finances in a less than healthy state. The statistics back up what we already know is true: every year many people in this country need help to cope with critical health problems. It is estimated 70,000 heart attacks occur in Canada each year, estimated 40,000 to 50,000 strokes occur in Canada each year and our probability of developing some form of cancer in our lifetime is 1 in 3. No one expects to become very sick. The good news is that more Canadians than ever are recovering from cancer and living after heart attacks and strokes. In recent years, the death rate among patients hospitalized for heart attacks has been cut in half to 8 per cent and 75 per cent of stroke victims will survive the initial event. These increased survival rates are adding challenges not only to our health care system, but also to our pocketbooks.

Here’s a possible scenario you may face: like many victims of critical illnesses, you may have to stop working. If you have disability insurance, you may receive only a percentage of your normal salary or wage. Will it be enough to cover mortgage and car payments, monthly bills, and your children’s education expenses if they’re in college or university? You may also need to spend a considerable portion of your income on things not covered by your health care plan. You could need renovations to your home, vehicle modifications, and devices to help you move around. You may have to pay for homecare, childcare, or therapy. Or your partner may want to take some time off work to help care for you. What if you decided to seek treatment or surgery outside of

Canada? Most plans won’t cover that expense. Alternative medicine is an option that often falls outside health plans. Like many Canadians, you may have already been saving for your retirement years. It would be frustrating and perhaps even devastating if you had to cut into your retirement savings to help you get through your recovery. If you’re wondering if disability insurance or extended health care benefits are enough, it’s important to understand exactly what those benefits cover, and for how long. Review your policy if you have one or speak to your advisor about one. Speak with the person who administers your benefits. Depending on which province you live in, some of your costs may be included in the provincial health plan. It’s important to check. Finally, compare your current plan with what critical illness insurance could provide. Some plans such as the Sun Life Critical Illness plan, has a return on all your money if you don’t get sick. Your advisor can show you how this plan will help if an unexpected illness strikes.

Tracing the bitter truth of chocolate and child labour cont'd from pg. 25 cocoa that goes to the co-operative supplying Nestle as part of its recent Fairtrade initiative. In January, the company began selling Fairtrade four-finger Kit Kats in the UK. Neither of the young boys goes to school and figures compiled by the US State Department show that they are among an estimated 100,000 Ivorian children put to work in the cocoa industry. Although Nestle does buy from the cooperative that the farmer sells his crop to, the company said in a statement: “Panorama has been unable to provide us with any evidence whatsoever of child labour being used to produce cocoa beans purchased by Nestlé.” In America - the world’s largest consumer of chocolate US Congressman Eliot Engel proposed legislation nine years ago that would have required all chocolate sold in America to state on the label that it is slave-labour-free or childslave-labour-free. But in 2001, he agreed instead to an industry regulated six-

point plan to put an end to child labour in the chocolate trade, with the threat of legislation looming should they fail to act. Impoverished villages in Burkina Faso are a source of child labour BBC News “I didn’t trust them at first, but once they came around I trusted them and you know the proof is in the pudding so to speak. If they became hostile or were dragging their feet, we could always resort to the legislation,” he said of the United States’ chocolate giants. But lawyer Terry Collingsworth, who has acted against the chocolate industry, said the plan is a “complete failure” and it is time to enact the law that Mr Engel first floated nine years ago. “Let’s dust off that law, and if you mean what you say and you want to stop the use of child slaves producing products like cocoa, let’s pass that law, and then we’ll have something to work with so that we can successfully stop this crime.” A result of the partnership - a collaboration between Mr

Engel, his colleague Senator Tom Harkin, and the US chocolate industry - was to establish a foundation to help end the worst forms of child labour in West Africa, known as the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI). Executive director Peter McAllister said the chocolate companies recognise that there is a problem and are doing their best to find a solution to the practice of using child labour, adding that human rights issues are “complex and challenging” for the companies involved. “If there wasn’t a problem we wouldn’t be here so we acknowledge the problem,” he said of the widespread practice of using children - a sensitive issue on the ground in West Africa - both politically and economically for the families that need the income from their children working. Mr McAllister said that is why the ICI is working in 243 communities in West Africa and has already made sure that 16,000 children are in school. BBC News

BUSINESS Financial Check Up and Wealth Creation By Eddie Twumasi Smith Bsc(Hons) Chem Eng, MBA,CGA, CPA

of illness or injury, I have enough insurance, assets or other income to look after myself and family and retain my current lifestyle?. 7. I actively manage, review and refresh my financial goals, financial plan and financial strategies?. Last month I wrote on life milestones and its financial implications. Limited by space I could not exhaust on all possible scenarios that we seldom come across and its financial effect. After pondering over my last article, I decided to start a series of articles that will highlight some of the life milestones and how to deal with these opportunities, challenges and avoid potential pitfalls or financial black hole. As we normally do with our medical/health and wellness check up, we routinely go though tests and assessments to determine the state of our health. For many years I thought I was so healthy and well until a couple of years ago I was confronted with reality. My medical check up showed high levels of bad cholesterol (type B- LDL). I had to change my lifestyle, what to eat and what not to eat, taking body exercises more seriously and making regular check ups a must in my personal annual calendar. Sometime we behave like ostriches and bury our head in the sand pretending as if nothing is wrong and we are as financially fit as Warren Buffet. It is therefore very important for all to make regular financial check ups to determine our state of financial health and wellness. Financial Check Up The following are basic questions which we need to ask ourselves on a scale of 1 to 7 with 1 being strongly disagree and 7 being strongly agree. These questions however are not comprehensive covering all possible financial conditions. The good news is, if we are able to come to an understanding or realization on where we stand, it serves as a good reality check for further detail assessment. Here we go: 1. I understand how much I am earning and how much I am spending each week, month or yearly?. 2. I plan and understand my expenses and pay bills before due dates?. 3. I have clearly defined short, medium and long term financial and lifestyle goals 4. My loans/mortgage has been reviewed in the last 12 months and is provided on competitive rates, fees and terms?. 5. I have the discipline to use my savings for investments or debt reduction each month. And my investments are well diversified in different asset classes?. 6. If I couldn’t work because

8. I keep up to date with investment markets, economic issues and changes in government regulations and laws?. 9. I understand how much income I will need in retirement and how much capital will be needed to achieve this goal and have access to funds in case of emergency? 10. If I was to die tomorrow, my family would be comfortable as our assets and life insurance could pay off debts and leave enough money to live comfortably?. If you tally your score above and the score is below 30 then the obvious prognosis of this financial condition is that of financial “Dutch disease”, financial aches & pain, distress, which is consistent with symptoms of higher liabilities i.e. spending (appreciation of nonperforming goods) exceeding assets/income or living at or above your means. With such financial conditions, one needs some financial “prescription” to be able to gain financial consciousness, wellness and health. If we are honest and truthful with the state of our financial health we will be conscious and start taking measures to reverse the trend. Like I stated earlier, after my medical check up and realizing my predicament, I changed my lifestyle and took steps to reverse the unwanted. Lets start today by looking at some steps and prescriptions that will assist us. Prescription Have a Dream and Set Financial Goals The single most significant financial lever that individuals control directly is their management of personal expenditures. The second is their lifetime effort to obtain sufficient income. Most people simply do not save enough of their current income to fund adequately their future needs. Larry Russell of Financial Freedom in the United States have developed a financial planning and investment software called VeriPlan. This software is very affordable and can be used to analyze your financial affairs in detail. VeriPlan enables you to view graphical projections of your family’s income, expenses, assets, and debts across your lifetime. Data inputs reflect your particular situation and include all your assets, including cash, bonds, equities, property, real estate, private equities, and business interests. With this software you can construct your baseline financial plan and measure your current financial circum-

stances and goals and intentions for the future. VeriPlan can vary future expected investment returns by asset class, and it automatically analyzes the details of your taxes and investment expenses. Any and all assumptions can be changed for instant “what-if” testing. The model’s risk analysis capabilities evaluate how well your future assets would cover normal and extraordinary expenses, if market or personal circumstances disrupt your plans. Unnecessary investment fees can substantially undermine your returns. VeriPlan projects the returns you will waste with such fees, if you do not choose more costefficient investments. Assess your Investment Return and Risk Tolerance Preferences The nature of our jobs or source of income sometimes determines how much we can afford riskier or less risky investments. For someone who works fix 40 hours a week will be more risk averse than compared to someone whose income is variable. Investors with different levels of risk tolerance are more satisfied by the expectations associated with investment strategies that are better aligned with their risk preferences. Differences in risk tolerances mean that more risk-averse investors are personally more satisfied with a lower risk portfolio despite its lower expected returns i.e. someone working fix 40 hours per week will not be willing to invest in more risky instruments than if he/she had a variable income. Less risk-averse investors are more satisfied with portfolios characterized by higher risk and higher expected returns. While there are a variety of approaches to the measuring relative investment return and risk preferences. With VeriPlan, you will be much better able to judge the expected outcomes of various investment allocations related to your risk preferences. Monitor and adjust your financial plan time-efficiently Investment and wealth creation does not live in a stable environment. The external environment is dynamic and undergoing constant changes that require consistent review of financial performance ,plans and goals. Scientific investment strategies that rely on relatively efficient financial markets allow people to minimize their time commitment to investment management. Yet, on average, they are still expected to obtain optimal riskadjusted portfolio returns that are near the market’s return. It is advisable we monitor our RRSPs, retirement investment portfolios/performance over time against other benchmarks to determine whether the fund managers are doing better job for their management fees or they are just riding on the wigs of lady luck?. We are partly responsible for how our assets yield overall and where it should be invested.

Keep your eyes on the road By: Zane Roth and Jayson Schwarz

Keep Your Eyes on the Road: It’s more than just common sense There is no shortage of distractions behind the wheel; most if not all of us are guilty of eating, drinking, fiddling with the radio, calibrating a GPS, and playing with our smart phones while driving. The old adage eyes on the road and hands at “10 and 2” - or “3 and 9”, is honoured more in its breach than in observance. However, in a day and age where multitasking is almost second nature, the old rule of thumb is more important than ever. If you’re going to eat in the car, think about the risks you assume when eating hot foods; hot food can spill and greasy food can ooze out onto your steering wheel. Either of these two situations could be a recipe for disaster. In 2010, the Ontario government passed a law amending the Highway Traffic Act outlawing the use of holding phones while driving. If you are caught “holding or using a hand-held wireless communication device” or a “handheld entertainment device” while driving, you could be fined $155.00. Note that you’ll get a ticket whether you’re talking on the phone or shuffling the playlist on your mp3 player. (You may still use a hands free device to talk on the phone, but beware of holding the device while

talking.) While you would think that a $155 fine would suffice to cut down on this form of distracted driving, however, more than 45,000 tickets were handed out in Ontario during 2010. The most important thing to remember is that a car is a lethal weapon and while distracted you could kill or permanently injure yourself or someone else. You could destroy the lives of your family or some innocent third party minding their own business. Could you live with that? There is, however, another problem, people who look for the opportunity to make an accident happen.Fraudsters and opportunists will seize upon any opportunity to take advantage of a situation. While once fraudsters used to stage accidents, now they can simply watch in their rear views and wait for a driver to put their head down to update their Facebook status. They slam on the brakes and KABOOM you have rear ended them and it’s YOUR fault!!!!!!

If you cause an accident while using a cellular phone, and the people in the other car(s) involved choose to sue you, the lawyers on the other side are very clever, and they will find out you were using the phone. In all likelihood, you will be found to be at fault for the accident, which may result in higher insurance premiums, a ticket, time in Court and a whole slew of other headaches you could no doubt live without. Today, we are all masters of multitasking. However, you should know the big risks you assume when you try to do more than just drive when you’re behind the wheel. Please, keep to hands on the wheel, and drive safe. As always, if you or someone you know has been hurt in an accident, we would be happy to answer their questions and speak to them, free of charge. Obama’s health-care law upheld by Egypt’s presidentelect Mursi Supreme Court begins work on government

U.S. President Barack Obama won a huge political victory on Thursday as the U.S. Supreme Court upheld his controversial health-care law, which requires uninsured Americans to purchase health insurance under threat of a financial penalty. “I know there will be a lot of discussion today about the politics of all this — about who won and who lost. That’s how these things tend to be viewed here in Washington” Obama said from the White House. “But that discussion completely misses the point. Whatever the politics, today’s decision was a victory for people all over this country whose lives will be more secure because of this law and the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold it.” In a 5-4 ruling, Chief Justice John Roberts, appointed to the court by former president George W. Bush, joined the court’s four liberal justices, Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor, in upholding the law. Roberts, who most observers had thought would side with the conservative-leaning judges, instead wrote the majority opinion in support of

the law, saying the mandate may be upheld under the power of Congress to tax. “The Affordable Care Act’s requirement that certain individuals pay a financial penalty for not obtaining health insurance may reasonably be characterized as a tax,” Roberts wrote. “Because the Constitution permits such a tax, it is not our role to forbid it, or to pass upon its wisdom or fairness.” Ironically, Obama had previously strongly rejected that the mandate was the equivalent to a tax increase. “I absolutely reject that notion,” he told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos in an interview in 2009. Justice Anthony Kennedy, who was considered the swing vote, joined justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas in the dissent. “The act before us here exceeds federal power both in mandating the purchase of health insurance and in denying non-consenting states all Medicaid funding,” the dissenters said in a joint statement. The Obama administration had argued that the federal government had the right to legislate Americans into purchasing health insurance under

the commerce clause of the U.S. Constitution, which states that the U.S. Congress has the power “to regulate commerce …among the several states.” The law, which seeks to cut skyrocketing healthcare costs and extend health insurance to 30 million uninsured Americans. was challenged by officials in 26 states, led by Florida, who argued the White House overreached in its interpretation of the clause.

They claimed the federal government had no right to compel private citizens to purchase a certain product, in this case health insurance, that the law infringes on state rights, and that the individual mandate should be struck down as unconstitutional. Roberts agreed that the government does not have the right to impose an individual mandate under the Commerce clause. “Construing the Commerce Clause to permit Congress to regulate individuals precisely because they are doing nothing would open a new and potentially vast domain to congressional authority,” Roberts wrote. “Indeed, the Government’s logic would justify a mandatory purchase to solve almost any problem.” “The individual mandate forces individuals into commerce precisely because they elected to refrain from commercial activity. Such a law cannot be sustained under a clause authorizing Con-

gress to “regulate commerce.” he wrote. Roberts made note of the “severe burden” that taxation can impose, especially one motivated by a regulatory purpose. However, he wrote that “a tax nonetheless leaves an individual with a lawful choice to do or not do a certain act, so long as he is willing to pay a tax levied on that choice.” The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, derisively referred to by its Republican critics as Obamacare, was considered to be the U.S. president’s signature domestic policy achievement. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said he disagreed with the top court’s decision, reaffirming that on his first day if elected president, he would act to repeal the law. “Let’s make clear that we understand what the court did and did not do. What the court did today was say that Obamacare does not violate the Constitution. What they did not do was say that Obamacare is good law or that it’s good policy,” he said. Polls show that while the majority of Americans are opposed to “Obamacare” as a whole, and in particular, the individual mandate, they support many provisions of the bill, which include forcing insurance companies to insure those with pre-existing conditions and that individuals can stay on their parents’ health-care coverage until they reach the age of 26. bbcnews

Mohammed Mursi supporters continue their celebrations in Cairo, 25 June Mursi supporters continued their celebrations during the day in Cairo Egypt’s president-elect, Mohammed Mursi, has moved into his new office in the presidential palace and begun work forming a government he says will represent all of the people. The Muslim Brotherhood candidate, who defeated ex-PM Ahmed Shafiq, could be sworn in by the end of the month. However, the ruling military council has taken many presidential powers and questions about his authority remain. A new constitution, the economy and security will be his main priorities. The prime minister appointed by the military rulers, Kamal el-Ganzouri, met Mr Mursi on Monday to resign formally and assume caretaker duties until the new president’s team is in place. One of Mr Mursi’s campaign spokeswomen, Nermine Mohammed Hassan, told Agence France-Presse: “He has already started with a list of names he is considering. He says he will declare the cabinet soon.” Aged 60, married with four children. Comes from a village in the Nile Delta province of Sharqiya. US-educated engineering professor; teaches at Zagazig University. Rose through the ranks of the Muslim Brotherhood. Has been

praised for his oratory as an MP. After toppling of Hosni Mubarak, he became chairman of Brotherhood’s FJP party Another Mursi spokesman, Yasser Ali, said the president’s key concern was political stability. State television showed Mr Mursi meeting on Monday with Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the head of the ruling military council, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (Scaf). Field Marshal Tantawi said the military would “stand by the elected, legitimate president and will cooperate with him for the stability of the country”. Mr. Mursi has promised to appoint a range of vice presidents and a cabinet of “all the talents”. One key point of discussion with the Scaf will be the court-ordered dissolution of the Muslim Brotherhood-dominated parliament, which happened days before the presidential run-off vote. Because of the dissolution of parliament, it is unclear where the new president will take his oath of office. The Muslim Brotherhood has been seeking a partial recall of parliament so that he is sworn in before MPs. However, the Mena news agency quoted a Muslim Brotherhood spokesman as saying the oath would be taken before the Supreme Constitutional Court. Emad Abdel-Ghaffour, cont'd on pg. 43

Frankly Speaking Descending deep into the political gutters By Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg The level of political trash and dirty loose talk from the NDC government especially its information and communication teams in Ghana are becoming quite unbearable to say the least. Not a single day passes without some of these people not uttering insults and invectives on their political opponents. The NDC propaganda teams and spin doctors have become so intolerable of any dissenting views and ideas of their political opponents that they spew out any trash that gets into their heads. They operate under this twisted axiom of “if you are not with us, then you are against us”. An interesting aspect of their vicious diatribes has been the recent forward and backwards spats between the Mills’ team and that of former President Jerry Rawlings. Their attacks on their party Founder and Father got so brutal and dirty recently that Rawlings cautioned the Mills people who, according to Rawlings, “open their mouths before they think” to refrain from further personal attacks on him and his family else they will see fire. Among the Mills propaganda team members, the ones that really fit Rawlings’ description of “opening their mouths before they think” are, ironically, the Presidential

Spokesperson called Koku Ayidoho and Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Recently, in a World Cup Football qualifying match between Ghana and Lesotho, the power feeding the floodlights at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi failed resulting in the match being held up for about an hour. In a hasty reaction to this incident, Koku Ayidoho claimed that President Mills is so “embarrassed and displeased” by this incident that he has ordered that the Regional Manager of the Ghana Electricity Company be fired!! Few days later it was revealed that the President had given no such orders. Ironically, it was also revealed that the Ashanti Regional Branch of the Ghana Electricity Company had nothing to do with the electricity grid feeding the floodlights at the Stadium. Koku Ayidoho then shamelessly admitted then that the President had given no

such orders. But despite this serious gaffe and misbehaviour, Ayidoho was never reprimanded by the President. He is still keeping his position and spitting out more trash talk. On Friday June 15, President Mills left Ghana for the US admitting for the first time that he was going for medical checkup with his doctors in the United States. This was after the government’s propaganda team had kept unusually quiet for a number of days over rumours that President Mills had died. On the day of his departure at the airport, President Mills challenged those peddling his “death” rumours to see if he looked like a dead person. The simple fact and truth that President Mills and his team do not want to acknowledge is that the heath of the President of the nation is of paramount interest to every citizen of that country and they all have a right to know the state of health of the President at all times. Rather his propaganda team went on their usual offensive insulting real and imaginary foes of the President who wish him dead. Sadly on Sunday June 24, a Member of Parliament of the Opposition NPP for Kwabre West in the Ashanti Region, Emmanuel Asamoah Owusu-Ansah died. Gha-

naian custom and tradition require that we show respect and reverence for the dead and sympathize with their bereaved families. Rather Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, Deputy Information Minister saw the unfortunate death of the Member of Parliament of his political opponents as an opportunity to insult them. He claimed in a public speech to College students that it was God who killed the MP as “punishment” for the NPP claiming that President Mills was dead. He continued that anytime the NPP says that the President is dead, “one of them will die”. “I don’t know how many of them they want to die before they stop talking bad about the President?” Holy smokes!!! And this is the Deputy Minister of Information of the Republic of Ghana!!!! These people have descended so much into the gutter that there is no demarcation line for them between loose talk and sensible talk, between vile and wild propaganda and decorum in public life and public speaking, between decency and immoral behaviour. And these are our present crop of political leaders?? This bunch of NDC spin doctors need to learn the art of politics and public life. You do not need to agree with those on the other side of the political

spectrum. We do not have to agree on every issue. Normal societies consist of normal human beings who should have differing opinions and ideas on how society should be organized. My father used to tell me that if there is any community where everyone agrees with everyone, that society then consist of very stupid people. In the NDC world and in the world of the Ablakwas, the Ayidohos, the Kobi Acheampongs and the likes in the NDC propaganda machine, the world should consist of only those who think and behave according to the NDC gospel and its twisted version of what the “truth” is. This is a recipe for disaster. Interestingly, the

national Chairman of the NDC himself, Dr. Kwabena Adjei has come out to say that rumours about the death of President Mills were generated within the opposing camps in their own political party. Why does the Ablakwas not insult them then? This unruly behaviour has to stop. Being a public officer gives no one a licence to launch personal attacks and insults on those they do not agree with. Ghana is for all its citizens and everyone has a divine right to speak their mind on issues of national importance that impact on their lives. And that includes the right to know about the state of health, the true state of health of the President of the national at all times.

moral sex. In the long run, these life Style Prostitutes and the predators are never unified as a couple. The predator will always view the lifestyle prostitute as a person of low moral standards, poor judgement, dirty and not worthy of marriage. The financial crisis that occurred in the US during the inception of President Obama presidency is an example of Corporate Lifestyle Prostitutes. These CEO, COO and CFO could not give up their golf club membership, gardeners, butlers, private planes, lavish vacations, etc as their financial conditions deteriorate. They continued their accustomed lifestyle until they hit a brick wall. Even after President Obama gave them bailout funds (welfare cheques), they continued to give themselves bonuses to maintain their accustomed lifestyle. Imagine the nerve of these corporate executives using welfare money to fuel their private planes, pay golf membership fee and attend lavish vacations. In order for some parents to maintain a certain level of living standards they lose quality time with their children while chasing money. The child’s biggest influence becomes low educated ghetto nannies. Parents convince themselves that

what they are doing outside of the home are high value quality tasks. They are further convinced that time spent with children as low value tasks that can be delegated to others with no vested interest on how the children turn out. What these parents have to realize is, there is a window of opportunity to influence children and that should be the highest value task they have as a parent. Working extra hours for extra money to pay nannys to spend extra time with your children make no sense. The passage of skills and value to children is achieved by quality and quantity of time spent with them. The simple question a parent has to ask is who is more important, a client or my child. In conclusion, Love is an unconditional affection towards someone or something. Money is a replacement for love, and an unsatisfying substitute at that. In today’s world we view love and money as similar, but when dissected, the unattractive flaws of money are more evident. Money plays a vital role in people’s lives, whether they have too much or too little. The love of money has turned many blessed individuals into lifestyle prostitutes that find it hard to scale down expenses and much easier to jump over to the neighbours lawn that appears to be very green from a distance.

Doris Osei Bonsu, Crisis Counselor, Toronto It is widely known that texting is currently the preferred method of communication more than talking on the cell phone among teenagers. They do it late at night, when their parents are asleep; they do it while eating and crossing the street; and they do it in the classrooms. They do it so much that their thumbs hurt. Do you have an adolescent texting addict? Text message addiction is a very real thing. Although teens love texting, it can become addiction that can cause both physical and mental health problems. This “illness” is known as Textaphrenia. It seems to be quite normal for teenagers to keep checking their cell phones for text messages but very few of them are aware that this normal habit has turned into an addiction. This “illness” puts you in a constant mental mode that makes you think that a text message has arrived when it hasn’t. It is now widely estimated that the number of text addicts is rising very fast. A mobile company has released some figures which clearly indicate that text messaging has increased by 89% in the last two years. In fact text addiction is just a part of cell phone addiction which is not a new phenomenon. Students and teenagers feel anxious when their cell phones are not in their hands. A recent study by Jennie Carroll from RMIT University, Melbourne, suggests that mobile phones have been meshed into teenagers’ lives. The immediate physical effect of text addiction is repetitive strain injury. The lubricating fluid between the tendons, shoulders and wrists dries out if we keep texting most of the time. As teenagers find texting easier and economical than making a call, text addiction is more common among teens. Apart from the physical injury, texting causes many other types of addictions. Some of these are:

* Textaphrenia- Thinking that a message has arrived when it hasn’t actually arrived. If you keep checking your cell phone for new messages without hearing a beep or tone, chances are that you are suffering from Textaphrenia. * Textiety – Carroll’s study defines Textiety as a feeling of not receiving or sending text messages. * Binge Texting- When teenagers keep sending multiple messages to feel good about themselves, they are said to be suffering from Binge Texting. Carroll explains that it happens when teenagers feel that they have been left out of the loop therefore they attract attention by sending messages. She further says that there are several other disorders that are caused by repetitive texting. There are some reports of growing “Monster Thumbs” because of excessive texting. Repetitive Thumb Syndrome, depression, low self esteem and anxiety are some of the other ill effects of text addiction. Surprisingly there are people who believe that there is no such thing as text addition. Did anyone know that cocaine or marijuana were addictive until people started getting addicted to them? There is nothing wrong with texting in itself but too many teenagers take it to the extreme. Instead of paying attention in class, doing homework or studying at home, teens are too busy sending messages back and forth on their phones. This causes classroom disruptions and grades slip. In addition texting can hurt them socially. No one wants to have dinner with friends and/or family when one is continuously texting. So why is it addicting? To start with, it causes the brain feedback to its pleasure center due to the neurotransmitter dopamine. Family therapist Steve McCready states that this release of dopamine is similiar to forms of drug usage. While texting, it comes in small doses. This can cause teens to want to text more and more. Although a sense of euphoria can be felt at the time, this can be replaced

with irritability if the teen is unable to continue communication Setting Boundaries: Many teenagers have curfews for being out as well as for bedtimes. A cell phone doesn’t have to be any different. Parents need to set up times in the morning when your teenager is allowed the usage of a cell phone, as well as a cut off time at night. If you do not believe your teen will abide by these rules, then you need to predetermine the time that you will take the phone away to ensure that the child will not be texting. You may be viewed as an evil villain, but in the long run you are doing the best thing you can for your child. Unfortunately, not all teens will abide by their parents’ rules. If this happens to be the case, there are choices that can be made. * You can either take your teenager ’s cell phone away or change your cell phone plan that will not allow any texting on your child’s phone. * There are phone companies such as AT&T that offer texting plans with a certain amount of minutes each month allowed for texting. Unfortunately, if anyone goes over the amount of time, you will be billed for it. * Look for a child’s cell phone plan that lets you set times when a child’s cell phone is active. Although unlimited texting plans sound good, it can have detrimental consequences on your child. It is advisable to speak to your cell phone company directly to find out what kind of parental controls are offered. The teenage years can be very difficult and power struggles may occur. However, it is up to you as a parent to enforce the rules. If you fear that your child may be texting while driving, make it a rule that he or she must hand over the phone before getting behind the wheel of a car. This may very well save someone’s life, including the life of your child. With 80 percent of kids owning cell phones, parents need to keep an eye on the amount of time their teenagers spend on the phone especially the time they spend indulging in excessive texting.

Lifestyle Ask The Doctor By: David Yaw Twum-Barima, MD, MSc, FRCPC

This column is devoted to answering your questions on health and discusions of diseases which are common among the African Canadians.

WOMEN’S HEALTH: Pap smear: Screening test for cervical cancer Understand the importance of the Pap smear, including how it’s done, what it means when it’s abnormal and why it needs to be part of your regular health checkups. Definition A Pap smear, also called a Pap test, is a procedure to test for cervical cancer in women. A Pap smear involves collecting cells from your cervix — the lower, narrow end of your uterus. Detecting cervical cancer early with a Pap smear gives you a greater chance at a cure, should cervical cancer be detected. A Pap smear can also detect changes in your cervical cells that suggest cancer may develop in the future. Detecting these cells early with a Pap smear is your first step in halting the possible development of cervical cancer. Why it’s done

A Pap smear is typically done in conjunction with a pelvic examination — a procedure that allows your doctor to examine your external genitals, vagina, uterus, ovaries and rectum. Although pelvic examinations can screen for reproductive problems or abnormalities, only a Pap smear will detect early cervical cancer or precancers. Who should have a Pap smear? A number of organizations

have recommendations regarding when a woman should have a Pap smear. Groups generally agree that you should have your first Pap smear about three years after first having sexual relations or at age 21, whichever comes first. After age 29 recommendations differ slightly but it is generally recommended that women undergo Pap test between 1 to 3 years depending on their individual circumstances. Women who have risk factors should have tests yearly. Some risk factors include : A diagnosis of cervical cancer or a Pap smear that showed precancerous cells , Exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES) before birth , HIV infection or Weakened immune system due to organ transplant, chemotherapy or chronic corticosteroid use.

head of the ultra-conservative Islamist al-Nour party, told Associated Press that although the election result had eased the tension, there was still much mediation needed between the Islamists and the Scaf on the president’s powers. The Scaf has led Egypt since last year’s revolution and issued a series of recent decrees: The justice ministry gave soldiers the right to arrest civilians for trial in military courts until the ratification of a new constitution A decree was issued dissolving parliament after a court ruling that the law on elections to the lower house of parliament was invalid The Scaf granted itself legislative powers and reinforced its role in the drafting of a permanent constitution Field Marshal Tantawi announced the re-establishment of a National Defence Council, putting the generals in charge of Egypt’s national security policy

Shares on Egypt’s main EGX30 index soared on Monday in the first trading since the results were announced, sparking a half-hour suspension. The halt in trading is triggered by a mechanism designed to prevent market fluctuations greater than 5%. Gains continued on the restart, with the EGX30 on the Egyptian Exchange closing 7.6% up. In his victory speech on Sunday, Mr Mursi, 60, urged Egyptians “to strengthen our national unity” and promised an inclusive presidency. “There is no room now for the language of confrontation,” he said, after the election authorities declared that he had won 51.73% in the 16-17 June presidential run-off. On hearing the news of his victory, tens of thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters cheered in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, chanting, “Down with military rule!”. Celebrations continued into Monday, with some protesters saying they

would not leave the square until parliament was reinstated. Mr. Mursi paid tribute to the protesters who died in last year’s uprising against former President Hosni Mubarak but also praised the role of Egypt’s powerful armed forces. He also said he would honour international treaties. Responding to Mr. Mursi’s election, the White House called the result “a milestone for Egypt’s transition to democracy”. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday: “We expect to work together with the new administration on the basis of our peace treaty.” There was confusion over an alleged interview quoted by Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency. Fars said Mr. Mursi planned to expand relations with Iran to “create a balance of pressure in the region”, but Mr Mursi’s spokesman denied the interview had taken place. bbcnews

On the other hand, women who have had hysterectomy (surgery to remove the womb), or women over age 75 who have had 3 negative tests in previous 10 can stop having Pap smears. Risks A Pap smear is a very simple test. It is generally done in a doctors office and does not require anesthesia. It is a safe way to screen for cervical cancer. However, a Pap smear isn’t foolproof. It’s possible to receive false-negative results — meaning that the test indicates no abnormality, even though you do have abnormal cells. Estimates for the occurrence of false-negative results with a conventional Pap smear vary widely but are at least 5 percent — or one in every 20 women. The liquid-based Pap test, in which the sample of cells is preserved in liquid rather than smeared on a microscope slide, provides fewer false-negative results. With either test, false-positive re-

sults — when the test indicates an abnormality when there really isn’t one — are extremely rare. A false-negative result doesn’t mean that a mistake was made. Many factors can cause a false-negative result, including: * An inadequate collection of cells * A small number of abnormal cells * An inaccessible location of the lesion * A small lesion * Abnormal cells mimicking benign cells * Blood or inflammatory cells obscuring the abnormal cells Although it’s possible for abnormal cells to go undetected, time is on your side. Cervical cancer takes several years to develop. And if one test doesn’t detect the abnormal cells, the next test most likely will. . Results The Pap smear can alert your doctor of suspicious cells that need further testing. Normal results

If only normal cervical cells were discovered during your Pap smear, you’re said to have a negative result. You won’t need any further treatment or testing until you’re due for your next Pap smear and pelvic exam. Abnormal results If abnormal or unusual cells were discovered during your Pap smear, you’re said to have a positive result. A positive result doesn’t mean you have cervical cancer. What a positive result means depends on the type of cells discovered in your Pap smear. All abnormal results should be discussed with your doctor to determine the significance and also plan further tests. Married women should discuss results in the presence of their husband or a family member. Single women should be accompanied by a family member or a trusted friend for support. It is important to understand that a positive test does not necessarily mean you have cancer.

China slump a greater threat to Canadian economy than Eurozone

Canada’s financial advisors consider a major downturn in China to be a greater threat to the Canadian economy than the current debt crisis unfolding in the Eurozone, according to the Sun Life Advisor Sentiment Index released by Sun Life Global Investments. “Even though the Eurozone is a massive problem that will last for many years, the direct impact on Canada is quite small … whereas with Chin, advisors can see

that link a lot more from the commodities side,” says Sadiq S. Adatia, chief investment officer, Sun Life Global Investments in Toronto. More than half consider a major downturn in China to be among the three greatest threats (57 per cent). Forty-three per cent of advisors say the same about a breakup of the Eurozone. Thirty-nine per cent of advisors say a sovereign debt crisis is among the

top three risks to Canada. Also noteworthy, Canuck advisors believe the U.S. is the place to invest with 78 per cent of expressing optimism about U.S. markets (including the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 Index) compared to 60 per cent of advisors who say they are optimistic about Canada’s S&P/TSX Composite. “When you consider the markets as a whole it’s easy to be quite negative given what’s going on in the Eurozone,” Adatia says. “But it’s good to see advisors are more favourable towards the U.S. and that’s a good thing because when you look at what’s happening there, there are good signs that suggest their economy has turned the corner. I’m not saying there’s strong growth or that we’re running into a bull market by any means.” Dylan Reece, a senior advisor and portfolio manager at Nicola Wealth Management in Vancouver and a member of Advocis, the Financial Advisors Association of Canada, says his firm agrees stateside is the place to invest. “We’re focusing more on the U.S. in equities primarily because of the industries we can get access to that aren’t really available in Canada such as technology and healthcare,” he says. “We are more concerned about commodities because of Europe, China, and therefore we’re underweight in that area.” However, whereas seven in 10 advisors expressed

a bullish view of the global trading market for the year ahead in the Sun Life survey, Nicola Wealth Management is not among them. “We’re still very cautious and have been for over 10 years and therefore we only have 20 per cent to 30 per cent of our clients’ portfolios in stocks at all,” he says. “The balance is in cash-flowing mortgages, high-yield bonds, alternative strategies, private equities and commercial real estate. We’re conservatively, defensively positioned right now because of what we’re seeing around the world. “We’re in year 12 of a 15or 20-year secular bear market.” On the subject of whether China or the Eurozone is the greater worry for Canadian investors and the economy, Reece says he’s more concerned with what’s transpiring in Europe than in the Far East given China has significantly more levers to pull to stimulate their economy than the Europeans do. “We view Europe a much bigger concern than the slowdown in China in the short to medium term. China exports a majority of its goods and services to Europe and the U.S. What happens in Europe first can greatly affect China,” he explains. “If we see a major credit crisis continue to unfold in Europe … that’s a bigger concern to the global economy and credit. “This is a Lehman moment potentially developing in the Eurozone. That’ll have a much bigger impact on the global economy and Canada.” The Sun Life Advisor Sentiment Index also highlights weak consumer spending (36 per cent), the price of oil (35 per cent) and inflation (22 per cent) as potential threats to our economy. “When we did this survey in early May, the Bank of Canada had just come out and said rates will be moving up at some point and that housing is a concern,” Sun Life’s Adatia says. “I’ve been fortunate to have an extra month into it to see how quickly the Eurozone has deteriorated further and how the Bank of Canada and (the

federal government) are curbing the real estate market with the new mortgage rules. Those are big concerns.” Nicola Wealth’s Reece also highlights the state of Canadian real estate as being a point of concern when considering a slowdown in China. “The Chinese buyer has a significant influence especially in B.C. and in Toronto. We have been very concerned about residential real estate prices,” he tells Yahoo! Canada Finance. “As China continues to slowdown and their real estate market gets weaker we would expect further declines in prices. “We’re investing significantly more in physical, income-producing real estate both in Canada and the U.S. We deem that to

be a more stable asset.” Advisors believe almost half (48 per cent) of their clients are more risk adverse since 2008. Thirty-seven per cent believe their clients are pessimistic about the current market conditions. Fear of losing capital (62 per cent) is the No. 1 concern advisors hear from their clients followed by fear that their investment performance won’t be enough to achieve their lifestyle goals (61 per cent). The money invested won’t be enough for retirement (60 per cent) and fear that if markets crash, clients won’t have enough time to make up any losses before retirement (59 per cent) are also concerns advisors hear. Chimps maul American man at South Africa sanctuary cont'd from pg. 23

Telegraph newspaper, David Oosthuizen said: “We understand that the gentleman is stable and we really feel for him. This has been very upsetting for everyone - it is just horrific.” He told the newspaper that because of the abuse suffered by the animals before they were rescued, staff at the reserve were cautious around them and mindful of their greater strength. Jeffrey Wicks, a spokesperson for the Netcare 911 private ambulance company in South Africa, said the man who was attacked had been leading a tour group at the reserve when two chimps grabbed his feet and pulled him under a fence into their enclosure. He said the victim has suffered “multiple and severe bite wounds”. Paramedics reportedly needed an armed guard to reach the man in the chimpanzee enclosure, which is located within a nature reserve. The international institute was founded by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall in 2006 to house chimpanzees rescued from central Africa. Although they share much of their biology with humans, chimps have been known to attack unexpectedly. In the United States this week, lawyers for a woman severely disfigured in 2009 when she was attacked by a friend’s pet chimpanzee filed papers accusing state officials of failing to act on warnings that it could be dangerous. Let's Think Family - By Rev. Dr. Samuel Kisseadoo LESSONS ON LOVE — Part I I have made certain observations pertaining to love, and wish to share a few of them. As you ponder over these, I encourage you to discuss them with your fiancée, spouse, family members, and friends etc., and come out with more ideas that we can share in order to gain a deeper understanding of love, and be able to demonstrate practical love to one another for the building of our societies. 1) LOVE IS A CHOICE. True love is not just a chance. Love involves control of the mind and possession of the heart. Therefore you must carefully and wisely decide on what you allow to capture your mind and heart, especially through your eyes, ears, and imaginations. Infatuation is a flake of snow that quickly melts in heat; a seemingly formidable cloud that vanishes after the rain; or beautiful cloud that disappears when the sun shines through. Love is a tough rock of Gibralta that survives every storm from the surrounding seas in every relationship or circumstance. Experiencing or exercising love involves the control of channeled emotions towards the object of your love (person you intend to love). This is achieved by the use of your brains to craft a purpose for your love, development of the fear of God who is the Origin of love, and calculation of the intended and unintended consequences of your pursuit. Failure to develop such self-control, purpose, wisdom, and godliness in our love processes, has resulted in many

create a void and a deep hunger that nothing else can fill or replace. Such a condition can even open wide doors for opportunistic toxic and diabolic imitations of love and acidic lust to creep in and hurt you real bad, and probably consume you tragically! St. John 13:1; 1 John 3:16; St. John 14:15, 21-23; 1 Corinthians 13:1-13. of the universal broken relationships, failed marriages, and fractured friendships we see all around us. The love evaporated as quickly as it erupted, or slowly died from starvation on the altar of zero purpose and absence of wisdom. Love begins as a spark, but you must PURSUE it to obtain the entire star and not just a ray of light of the huge star that appeared to you as a bright spark whose purpose was to stimulate you to run after the whole of the love planet. He or she who refuses or neglects to pursue love will never experience the satisfying benefits and blessings of real love. We are often mistaken to think or believe that love hits you like chicken pox that erupts in your body one morning. The naked truth is that love involves a DECISION and a CHOICE that you have to deliberately desire, want, discuss, examine, go for, take a firm hold of, possess, and handle with meticulous care. If you play with love flimsily, treat it casually, question it unnecessarily, doubt it unreasonably, despise it painfully, disrespect it foolishly, and hold it loosely, use it selfishly or squander it senselessly, then love will flee from you and

2) LOVE IS A SET OF ACTIONS Love was never designed to be complete, based solely on the performance of one action. Love was created by God to be a set of thoughtful, freewill, un-selfish, kind, joyful, and consistent SET OF ACTIONS WITH PURE MOTIVES. This must be continuous as long as the receiver of your love needs that particular act or actions from you to feel loved and become convinced that YOU LOVE HIM OR HER. You must plan to be consistent and faithful in the demonstration of your love (in little as well as big words and deeds) to your date, courtship mate, spouse, family member, inlaw, business or ministry partner, co-worker, neighbor or friend, without resting or being apathetic at anytime. Please, stop boasting about your love accomplishments of the past to the person who does not see any love in you for him or her right now, and is therefore hurting, feels being abused or ignored and abandoned, or has become perplexed at your behavior. Even when your partner, family member, or friend is being fussy, oversensitive, picky, hard to please, or too demanding, we can prayerfully

and wisely provide what the one is asking for, with the purpose of gradually teaching and directing the person to understand and focus on what he or she really needs. Some demands or “wants” could be absolutely unnecessary, wasteful, unreasonable, and even sometimes harmful, but they still pester you to give them or treat them that way (sexually, romantically, emotionally, financially, physically, professionally etc. — even in church, fellowship or ministry). These can be huge challenges, but we can finally win the “love war” if we prayerfully apply God’s principles in His word, and use faith in God’s promises to pull down all strongholds of the devil fighting against our future progress in relationships. If we live in humility, obedience, and holiness to please God, we shall receive more grace to overcome the hurdles in our relationships and friendships, and prevent the invitation of satanic and human attacks as we tap into God’s power. I can sense the myriads of questions I am triggering in several minds and hearts, but each circumstance is different or unique for each of us, and the Lord can give us the wisdom to know how to handle the person in our relationship or whom you are dealing with. You will finally reap the benefits of character building in both of you, and the rich experience of knowing how to handle different people under different circumstances. You can then teach others to know how to handle challenges regarding the definition and demonstration of love in their relationships.

We often think (and actually believe) that one specific or special action (act) by someone, is enough to conclude that the person is completely loving. That is really not correct. Imagine that a mother went through nine months of stressful pregnancy and crowned it with painful labor to give birth to a child, and then abandoned the child because she has shown the child enough gargantuan love to bring him or her into the world, and has therefore “done what Napoleon could not do” (as we commonly put it when we were young students in the good old days). Will that mother be defined and congratulated as a very loving mother? No. Do we not rather despise, condemn, insult, and even try to discipline such a mother for being very callous and cruel? But when it comes to our ordinary relationships as well the romantic and obligatory ones (dating, courtship, marriage, home, family life etc.) we characterize people, defend ourselves, and pump our chests to brag about one or two very great demonstrations of sacrificial love that we showed some time ago, no matter how we are treating our lover, neighbor, colleague, or friend at this moment. We do that at home, church, workplace, school, and in our communities. In fact, the love you show now is more important than the love you demonstrated and expressed yesterday and in the past. Most often, what you do now is a test to reveal if what you did in the past was genuine. If people were to tolerate, excuse, and gloss over every

abuse and mistreatment or unkindness down the road because of great show of love and kindness in the past, then no relationships will ever break, and no divorce or separation will ever occur. The truth is that you can ignorantly, carelessly, deliberately, apathetically, or proudly engage in actions or do something very unloving and very damaging that can erode the entire currency of your accumulated love gains of past good deeds. So, please watch out! We should also learn to forgive, get healed, and go past the wounds of present or recent hurts and offences of mates, spouses, in-laws, family members, and friends who have hurt, offended, surprised, or even shocked us with present un-loving acts or words, so far as we know that they had sincere and sweet love for us at the beginning. There must be a cause for the present break in the love chain that we can find out and resolve any issues involved. If every remedy fails, continual demonstration of love and kindness on your part towards the person, plus fervent prayers of faith to God through Jesus Christ, will not fail you. “Love never fails” (1 Cor. 13:8). 1 Peter 3:8; 1 Peter 4:8. FOOD FOR LIFE Bringing the Gospel to our Community By: Rev. Joseph Osei-Amoah A LESSON FROM SOLOMON, KING OF ISRAEL The translators of the New King James Version of the Bible give the key word of the book of Ecclesiastes as “Vanity”. The translators explain “vanity” as, “the futile emptiness of trying to be happy apart from God.” (Page 583, The Holy Bible, New King James Version, by Broadman & Holman Publishers Nashville, Tennessee. 1988, Thomas Nelson, Inc.) —All biblical references and quotations are from the New King James Version. “The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.”Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” What profit has a man from all his labor in which he toils under the sun? One generation passes away, and another generation comes; but the earth abides forever. The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it arose. The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north; the wind whirls about continually, and comes again on its circuit. All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full; to the place from which the rivers come, there they return again. All things are full of labor; man

cannot express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which it may be said, “See, this is new”? It has already been in ancient times before us. There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come by those who will come after. I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.” (Ecclesiastes 1:1-12) King Solomon of Israel, the writer of the above, was one of the Old Testament characters highly favored by the Lord. At birth, God just loved him “Then David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her and lay with her. So she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Now the Lord loved him.” (2 Samuel 12:24) Solomon started out very well in his relationship with God. After he built and dedicated the temple of God in Jerusalem (1 Kings 6:1-38; 8:22-66), the Lord appeared to him in a dream and told him to ask whatever he desired and this was what the king asked from the Lord, “Therefore give

to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?” (1 Kings 3:9) The Lord was pleased with his request which He honored; and also gave Solomon riches, fame and promised to lengthen his life if he would obey Him. Unfortunately at the peak of his greatness, the king married seven hundred foreign wives and had three hundred concubines. In his old age, his wives turned his heart after other gods and he was no more loyal to the Lord God. In his backslidden condition, life became meaningless to Solomon. Riches, fame, and power without healthy relationship with the living God can never satisfy the human heart. No wonder, in the midst of plenty he was never satisfied

with life and concluded that life was meaningless (Ecclesiastes 1:2). The moment Adam and Eve disregarded God’s command, peace became a rare commodity. In the time of the Prophet Haggai, the Lord told the people of Israel why nothing seemed to work for them, “Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts:”Consider your ways! 6 “You have sown much, and bring in little; you eat, but do not have enough; you drink, but you are not filled with drink; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages, earns wages to put into a bag with holes.” (Haggai 1:5-6) We live in the world created and owned by God who has set down divine principles to govern it to bring order in our societies but we say to ourselves, “we shall not allow this One to rule over us!” This is the Lord’s response, “I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,” Says the LORD, “And I will heal him.” 20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. 21 “There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.” (Isaiah 57:19-21) To God, “the

wicked” is the one who refuses to submit to His rule. Adam and Eve never thought eating a fruit from a tree in a garden would be a big deal; but that simple act threw the whole creation in confusion and adversely affecting the lives of their children yet unborn. Let us honestly ask ourselves, “Is our world getting better with all the advancement in science and technology as morality is being discarded and our effort in trying to remove God from our lives?” After deliberately disobeying God’s command, Solomon tried to find peace of mind and satisfaction in building huge homes, planting beautiful vineyards, parks, gardens, orchards and reservoirs to water plants. He bought male and female slaves and had those born in his home. He owned large herds and flock; his treasury was filled with gold and silver; he hired male and female musicians; had many concubines in addition to his seven hundred wives. He had everything a man could desire but his conclusion was the same, “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” (Ecclesiastes 2-3-11) There is a void in the human soul which can only be filled by God. In his old age when life was slip-

ping by, King Solomon concluded, “Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14) Fallen humanity cannot save herself.Around the world, there is confusion and wickedness. As leaders of the world attempt to bring peace at one place, sudden destruction strikes somewhere else. The only hope for humanity is Christ who said, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” (John 3:16-17) If you want to have peace with God and lead a meaningful life even in present evil world, do what the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 10: 9-10, “…if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Around the Ghana Sports Scene with Jonathan Annobil Barwuah pushes Italy past Hearts CEO declares: Mahatma Germany! Otoo not for sale

A touch of star quality from Mario Barwuah Balotelli plus a familiar mixture of experience and canny defending saw Italy quash a young Germany side 2-1 on Thursday and book a place in the Euro 2012 final against holders Spain. The semi-final victory thanks to Balotellis firsthalf double extended Italys unbeaten run against Germany in major tournaments to eight games and Mesut Ozils late consolation penalty only disguised what was a comprehensive success. Kwabena Barwuah was born in Palermo, Sicily, to Ghanaian immigrants Thomas and Rose Barwuah. The family moved to Bagnolo Mella in the province of Brescia, Lombardy, shortly after he was born. As an infant, he had lifethreatening complications with his intestines which led to a series of operations, although his condition had improved by 1992. Mario’s health problems and the family’s cramped living conditions meant the Barwuahs decided to ask for the help

of social services who recommended that he be fostered. In 1993, the Barwuah family agreed to entrust the three-year-old boy to Francesco and Silvia Balotelli, his new foster family from Concesio, Brescia, with the legal move formalized by the Court of Brescia.[8] When Mario Balotelli became famous, his biological parents asked for his return. He later accused them of “glory hunting”, stating that they only wanted him back because of the prominence he had gained. According to Law 91 of 5 February 1992, Balotelli had to wait until his 18th birthday to request Italian citizenship, as the Balotellis had not adopted him. Balotelli officially gained citizenship in Concesio on 13 August 2008. Mario has three biological siblings: Abigail, Enoch and Angel Barwuah. Enoch Barwuah, two years his junior, had a trial at English Premier League side Stoke City in December 2011.

Cote d’Ivoire named hosts of 2014 ECOWAS Games Cote d’Ivoire has been named hosts of the 2014 edition of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Games. The Ivorians will host the third edition of the biennial games that seeks to promote unity and friendship among participating countries. Francis Chuks Njoaguani, Director of the ECOWAS Youth and Development Centre, said Cote d’Ivoire got the mandate to stage the biennial event which is gradually becoming a regular fixture on the African sports calendar. Cote d’Ivoire will also become the first francophone country to stage the competition after Nigeria organized the maiden edition in 2010. Njoaguani told the GNA Sports the Ghana event has been a success and commended the Government of Ghana for their support towards hosting the best edition of the bi-

ennial games so far. The highlight was the presentation of prizes to deserving athletes and teams that participated in disciplines such as Athletics, Boxing, Handball, Volleyball and Traditional Wrestling. After scooping all the gold medals on display, hosts Ghana were deservedly named the Best team for that discipline whilst Benin picked the fair play prize. Ivorian Konan Karl Olivier Koffi and compatriot Kouakou Ndri Elodie were adjudged the best male and female performers for handball. Benin grabbed the Fair Play in men’s category and Burkina Faso for the females’ Hosts’ Ghana took a consolation in Traditional Wrestling with the Fair Play prize, and Senegal as the overall team. Other participants are Sierra Leone, Togo, Mali, Nigeria and Liberia. GNA

Hearts of Oak’s CEO Fred Crentsil has declared Mahatma Otoo is not for sale but says the club will still entertain offers for their lead striker. Crentsil’s response has been necessitated following Asante Kotoko’s confirmationthey will be tabling an audacious bid to sign the 20year-old. Kotoko’s stunning revelation of their intent to sign the 2011 All Africa Games top goal scorer and gold medalist comes off

t h e h e e l s o f another huge revelation that they are in talks to sign exciting forward Uriah Asante who had just completed a loan spell with the Phobians. But Crentsil insists Otoo remains a big part of Hearts’ plans for next season but adds it doesn’t stop clubs from making offers for him – opening a slim window of opportunity for the materialization of what will certainly be the biggest local transfer this postseason.

“Dr. Sarpong called me yesterday over the prospect of signing Mahatma Otoo but I told him clearly that the player is not available for transfer,” he told GHANAsoccernet.com. “It however doesn’t stop Kotoko or any other club for that matter from making offers. “If they (Kotoko) write to us, we will access it, confer with the player if he reallywants to leave Hearts of Oak before arriving at a final decision. “But at this point I doubt if Mahatma (Otoo) is

ready to leave Hearts.” Kotoko are looking to build a solid team for their P r e m i e r League defence next season where they will also be making a return to continental competition in the Champions League after a four year absence. Hearts on the other hand are also looking to strengthen to wrestle the league title from their arch rivals and a are thus well bent on retaining their best players.

Ghana set to benefit as Airtel clinches deal with England’s Arsenal Young Ghanaian footballers are set to reap huge benefits after English side Arsenal signed a three-year partnership with Airtel for rights in the country. The Gunner signed the deal on Thursday with the African mobile networkoperator across five markets on the continent. Airtel will be able to utilise official Arsenal merchan-

dising, hospitality and content rights in Nigeria, Zambia, Ghana, Uganda and Rwanda, as well as being the mobile operator of the 2012 Arsenal Tour to Nigeria. The Gunners will also support the Airtel Rising Stars football programme and provide UEFAtrained coaches to help the initiative. Ghanaian players excelled in last year’s Airtel Ris-

ing Stars football programme and this will be an avenue for some of these players to be scouted by Arsenal. Arsenal’s head of global partnerships Vinai Venkatesham said: “This is the second long-term partnership arrangement to arise from the continent and we look forward to developing a number of exciting initiatives with Airtel, starting with our

forthcoming tour to Nigeria in August. “This underlines the depth of our following in Africa and how the profile of the club continues to grow internationally.” Arsenal will take on Nigeria’s national team in Abuja on August 5, with Arsene Wenger’s side also set for pre-season games in both China and Malaysia next month.

Italian press hail Super Mario Mario Balotelli and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neur The Italian press is unanimous in its praise of Mario Balotelli after last night’s 2-1 victory over Germany that clinched a place in the final of the Euro 2012. The Manchester City forward scored two superb goals to fire Italy into Sunday’s final against holders Spain at the Olympic stadium in Kiev. This morning’s Gazzetta dello Sport screams: “It’s us!!!” That is followed by a subheadline which reads: “Super Balotelli, the whole of Italy celebrates.” The 21-year-old Balotelli, playing in his first major tournament, had not impressed in the

Azzurri’s group games in P o l a n d and Ukraine although he did score against the Republic of Ireland. However, he stole the limelight in Warsaw on yesterday. Gazzetta’s editorial “A star is born” applauds Balotelli, whose heroics put the Azzurri in the final of the tournament for the first time since 2000. The Rome-based Corriere dello Sport shows on its front page a photograph of Balotelli celebrating after scoring his second goal with the headline: “Giants of Italy. “Germany beaten 2-1, we are in the final. “Balotelli amazing.” Corriere’s editorial believes the Azzurri’s win could not have come at a

better time for the country and for the sport. Italy is struggling with the world-wide economic crisis while the Azzurri went into Euro 2012 with the match-fixing scandal having hit the nation’s football leagues. Corriere wrote: “Happiness is restored to the country.” T u r i n based sports newspaper Tuttosport shows a photograph of Balotelli, noti n g his sublime performance: “Fabulous goals by Balotelli.” National newspaper La Repubblica salutes the Azzurri’s performance, their best of the tournament so far, and says on its front page: “The perfect game, Azzurri in the final.

“The magical night of super Mario.” National newspaper Il Messagero is also in awe of the national team’s display, with a headline that reads: “Magical Italy.” The paper also highlighted Italy’s dominance over Germany, a team they had never beaten in a competitive match in seven attempts, with a sub-headline that said: “Germany defeated again with a superb Balotelli.” The win ended Germany’s 15-match winning streak in competitive games. Germany had more time to rest after their quarterfinal showdown against Greece than the Azzurri, who also had to go to extra-time to beat England.
