Barack (That One) OBAMA Triumphs Again!!! By: Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg-MB

“That One”, Barack Hussein OBAMA, President of the United States of Africa, has done it again. He effectively, decisively and “Obamally” thrashed his challenger in the US 2012 Presidential Election on November 6 to secure re-election to the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC, for four more years!! And the victory was even more sweet coming against the background of the welloiled, well-buttered and

over-financed electoral machine of over-rich, bored, “angry white men” of his challenger, “Daddy” Mitt

Romney. In the course of the bitterly-fought campaign, Daddy Mitt handed the Obama campaign a very good, unsolicited gift when he dismissed half of the American population describing them as “victims, no-hopers, parasites and welfare cheats”. Romney also decided that Black people, Latinos, women, and young people were a bunch of no-hopers that he did not need to win. In the end, it was these cont'd on pg. 5

Ghana: Decision Time 2012!!! cont'd from pg. 1

These elections are very significant for a number of reasons: First they are being held against the background of the death of a former sitting President, John Evans Attah-Mills in July 2012 and the assumption of office of his VicePresident, John Dramani Mahama, as a caretaker President, who was also automatically confirmed by his political party to take over as the party’s Presidential Candidate. Secondly it is the second attempt of the major opposition candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa AkufoAddo at the Presidency having narrowly lost the last election in 2008 by a whisker of less than one percent in a run-off. Thirdly, the Parliamentary elections are being held amid a cloud of confusion created by the Electoral Commission with the support of the ruling party to create additional 45 new constituencies on top of

the existing 230. This exercise by the Electoral Commission has created so much furor with a number of court challenges. Most of the newly created constituencies have boundaries that are unclear. Some people in some of those constituencies do not even know that their former constituencies have been split. In effect the parliamentary elections are going to face some challenges which could have been avoided if both the Electoral Commission, the ruling party and government had exercised some patience. These elections will test the democratic resolve of Ghanaians. We all pray that they come off peacefully, freely, and fairly!! We wish our compatriots all the best in these trying moments. We shall be watching closely and praying for the nation and all its citizens as well. MAY God Bless Our Homeland, Ghana!!

Palestinians win upgraded UN status by wide margin There was applause as the result of the vote was confirmed The UN General Assembly has voted to grant the Palestinians non-member observer state status a move strongly opposed by Israel and the US. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told the assembly the vote was the “last chance to save the two-state solution” with Israel. Israel’s envoy to the UN said the bid pushed peace process “backwards”, while the US said the move was “unfortunate”. The assembly voted 138-9 in favour, with 41 nations abstaining. Today the world will hear our voice” Amir Hamdanin Ramallah, West Bank Hundreds of Palestinians celebrated on the streets of Ramallah, in the West Bank, after the result was announced. ‘Birth certificate’ “Sixty-five years ago on this day, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 181, which partitioned the land of historic Palestine into two states and became the birth certificate for Israel,” Mr Abbas said shortly before the vote in New York. the two state solution” “The General Assembly is called upon today to issue a birth certificate of the reality of the State of Palestine,” he said. The Israeli ambassador to the UN, Ron Prosor, said “the only way to reach peace is through agreements” between the parties, not at the UN. “No decision by the UN can break the 4,000-yearold bond between the people of Israel and the

land of Israel,” he said. Opponents of the bid say a Palestinian state should emerge only out of bilateral negotiations, as set out in the 1993 Oslo peace accords under which the Palestinian Authority was established. Speaking after the vote, the US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, urged the Palestinians and Israel to resume direct peace talks and warned against unilateral actions. Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Ron Prosor, says the only way to achieve peace is through negotiation US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called the vote “unfortunate and counter-productive”, saying it put more obstacles on the path to peace. “By going to the UN , the Palestinians have violated the agreements with Israel and Israel will act accordingly,” said the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Twitter. The UK abstained from the vote, as did Germany. The Czech Republic, the Marshall Islands and Panama were among the nations voting with the US and Israel. In the West Bank, crowds celebrated the vote by waving flags and chanting “God is great!” “For the first time, there will be a state called Palestine, with the recognition of the entire world,” Amir Hamdan was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency. “Today the world will hear our voice,” he added. Symbolic milestone The Palestinians are seeking UN recognition of a Palestinian state in

the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, the lands Israel captured in 1967. While the move is seen as a symbolic milestone in Palestinian ambitions for statehood, the “Yes” vote will also have a practical diplomatic effect, says the BBC’s Barbara Plett, at the UN. It would allow the Palestinians to participate in debates at the UN and improve their chances of joining UN agencies and bodies like the International Criminal Court. Last year, Mr Abbas asked the UN Security Council to admit the Palestinians as a member state, but that was

opposed by the US. Mr Abbas was much criticised by many Palestinians for remaining on the sidelines of the conflict earlier this month in Gaza and efforts to achieve a ceasefire with Israel. His Fatah movement, based in the West Bank, is deeply split from the militant Hamas movement which governs Gaza. Gaza’s Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh said in a statement sent to the BBC that Hamas’ “support for the UN bid is based on the ‘rule of non-recognition of the occupier’... and the right of Palestinians to return to their homeland”.

In securing another decisive victory, Barack Obama has secured another well-deserved claim to the White House, the House our ancestors built centuries ago through slave labour. Mitt Romney, as expected, won all those mountainous, Bible-totting evangelicals in the middle belt of the United States with small electoral

college votes while Obama claimed decisive victories in the more populous states including California, Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, Colorado… and Florida, to boot, as the final icing on the cake!! Obama’s final medal (Electoral College votes) haul was 332 to 206 for Romney. A candidate normally needs 270 of the Electoral College votes to win the US Presidency. Congratulations, Barack. Opinion/ Commentary Obama’s Re-election Bodes Well for United States and Africa Relations By: Kwabena Akuoko Four years ago, then Senator Barack Obama made history by becoming the first person of African descent to be elected as the President of the United States. President Obama’s enthusiasts all over the world were again thrilled when he was re-elected for a second term on November 6. And on behalf of their respective compatriots for instance, African leaders did not waste time in sending congratulatory and goodwill messages to President Obama following his second electoral victory. South African President Zumah stated in his message to the re-elected US president that South Africa values its relations with the United States and looks forward to strengthening bilateral co-operation between the two nations in the years ahead. Similarly, President Kibaki of Kenya remarked in his congratulatory message to Mr. Obama that Kenya is always proud in its association with the United States. Last, but not the least, President Mahama of Ghana mentioned in his admiring message to President Obama that Ghana looks forward to continuing to work with the re-elected US president and his administration to strengthen and deepen the cordial partnership between the two countries. The apparent question amid the euphoria surrounding Obama’s re-election then remains what does his second term mean to United States’ relations with Africa? Presumably, another four years of Obama’s presidency will augur well for America’s relations with its African partners, and here are the reasons: United States’ foreign policy literature indicates that its re-elected presidents usually overreach to remedy their foreign policy shortcomings. Conventionally, second-term US presidents tend to have free hand to implement progressive foreign policies, and it is widely expected that President Obama will not be an exception to this tradition. A recent case in point is when Mr. Obama’s predecessor, President George Walker Bush’s first term foreign poli-

cy did not prominently feature Africa, but that changed dramatically during his second term. Bush’s foreign policy is said to have paid special attention to Africa than none other in recent decades. This was exemplified by his immense commitment to improving the continent’s economic plight and its fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Although Mr. Bush announced his signature foreign policy initiative relative to global health promotion in 2003, his administration could not fully implement the program until after he was elected for a second term. Through the President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR), which has been hailed by many as a revolution in transforming healthcare delivery in Africa, the second term Bush administration pumped billions of dollars into the fight against HIV/ AIDS in Africa and elsewhere. Similarly, a second term Bush administration funded numerous infrastructure projects in Africa, including the George Bush Motorway in Ghana. Clearly, evidence abounds to support the notion that second term US presidents are generally progressive in their foreign policies. Initially, dealing with major terrorist attacks and the subsequent two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan respectively, Africa did not seem to be a priority for the Bush administration. However, there were remarkable changes in the former president’s foreign policy for Africa during his second term. More specifically in 2008, President Bush signed into law the United States Global Leadership against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Reauthorization Act, which authorized up to $48b to help thirty countries fight various diseases globally. And out of the thirty, twelve African nations have benefited or continue to benefit from President Bush’s foreign policy initiative. Sources close to Bush’s White House contend that the former president visited a select number of African countries, including Ghana in 2008 mainly to demonstrate his administration’s commitment to

helping Africa. No wonder President Bush’s African foreign policy has been praised by many as the most comprehensive since the end of colonialism in Africa. Mr. Bush’s well-praised African policy during his second term causes us to be hopeful that President Obama will follow suit. Mr. Obama initially had what seemed to be progressive African foreign policy. But unfortunately, several reasons such as the dealing with a worsening domestic economic crisis, efforts to withdraw US troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, response to the 2010 British Petroleum’s Gulf Coast oil spill dubbed as one of the worst environmental disasters in United States’ history, etc. in my perspective did not primarily give the first African American president the latitude to carry through with his foreign policy that would have profoundly benefited Africa. President Obama’s first term has been chiefly pre-occupied with improving domestic economic situation and other pressing issues. And who could blame him for focusing on dealing with his country’s ailing economy? After all, the high unemployment rate and other bad economic situations almost caused him a second term of his presidency. Therefore, now that the dust has settled and the economy appears to be picking up and most importantly he has been re-elected for a second term, I hope I am not wrong in my assumption that the Obama administration will give its African foreign policy a top priority. Clearly, a variety of circumstances have prevented a first term Obama administration to give Africa the deserved foreign policy attention and it is hoped that the re-elected president will at least have the opportunity to reflect on the inadequacies that permeated his first term administration’s relations with Africa. Africans must also remember that United States-Africa relations work well when African governments move towards, or stay on the cause of democratic reforms.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford found guilty, removed from office Rob Ford is to be removed as mayor of Toronto, following a conflict of interest verdict Monday morning. Toronto Mayor Rob Ford was found guilty in a conflict of interest case and will be removed from office. Justice Charles Hackland released his ruling on Monday, rejecting Ford’s claim that his decision to participate in a debate over whether he should repay $3,150 in questionable donations was a simple error in judgment. “The Mayor is the face of City government, both internally and externally. Maintaining the integrity of government is the Mayor’s most important job,” Hackland found, in part, according to a tweet by the Toronto Star’s Robyn Doolittle. John Mascarin, a municipal law expert who has been following the case, told the Toronto Star that “there’s never been a brouhaha of this magnitude in a major Canadian city.” Mascarin had said that if Ford is found guilty he would expect lawyer Alan Lenczner to file a quick appeal, possibly keeping Ford in office for another month. The fate of such an appeal was not immediately evident. But Hackland did place a 14-day pause on his decision to give time for the necessary administrative changes to be made. The question had stirred for weeks over whether Ford would be removed from office over the controversy.

Mayor Rob Ford

The complaint was brought forward by a private citizen and championed by seasoned litigator Clayton Ruby earlier this year in connection to a series of donations collected for Ford’s personal charity beginning in 2009, while Ford was a city councillor. The debate stemmed from $3,150 in donations to Ford’s football foundation that he raised by using city letterhead and, allegedly, his clout as a city councillor. The city’s integrity commissioner found the money to have been collected inappropriately and ordered Ford to repay it. .Ruby argued that Ford’s decision to participate in a debate, then as mayor, over whether he should be forced to pay back that money constituted a conflict of interest punishable by expulsion from city hall. Hackland ruled that Ford “failed in his burden to show that his contraventions of the MCIA were the result of a good faith error in judgement.”

Justice Hackland had several options at his disposal, but chose to remove Ford from office, pending the 14-day administrative pause. Ford could have been banned from running for office for the next seven years, but Hackland did not extend the punishment that far. The Toronto Star reported that city hall faces the unanswered question of how to replace Ford if he was removed from office. Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday told the Star last week that he expects he would temporarily assume the mayor’s duties until a by-election was held. The by-election would reportedly cost $7 million to run. Another option would be for a councillor to be appointed as a “caretaker” mayor until the 2014 municipal election. That replacement would be chosen by a majority vote. With this controversy behind him, for better or worse, Ford can now refocus his efforts on other issues, including a $6-million defamation suit against him that wrapped up in court last week. The Don Bosco Eagles, a Catholic high school football team Ford coaches, is set to appear in the championship Metro Bowl on Tuesday. Ford has hinted he would miss a council meeting to coach the game. There doesn’t seem to be any reason he would miss that game now. He’s persona non grata at city hall. Daily Brew

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford gets green light to run in by-election Rob Ford will be allowed to run in a by-election for the Toronto mayor’s job should one be held. All right, let’s do it all again. News that Toronto Mayor Rob Ford will be allowed to run in a potential byelection broke on Friday after the judge that threw him from office clarified his stance on the subject. Justice Charles Hackland addressed his ruling from earlier this week, which said that Ford was to be removed from office for breaching the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act and would not be allowed to run for the remainder of the term. The Toronto Star reported that Hackland removed a portion of the ruling that made it sound like Ford could not run again until the 2014 municipal election. [ So let’s keep this straight. This does not change the fact that Ford was found guilty of inappropriately participating in a debate over wheth-

er he should pay back questionable donations collected for a personal charity while using his clout as a city official. This does not change the fact that, pending appeal and a stay of execution, he will be removed from office as of Monday, Dec. 10. This doesn’t mean that a byelection must be held to find his replacement. This clarification means that, should council choose to hold a costly $7-million byelection, Ford can participate. Brother Doug is off the hook. Hackland’s original ruling found that Ford must vacate his seat as mayor but would face no repercussions “beyond the current term,” which had been interpreted to suggest he could not run in a byelection. Ford had maintained that he would be allowed to run in the possible byelection, and under Hackland’s new clarification he is right.

There is a first time for everything. The clarification will of course be considered a victory for Ford, who derided his ouster as part of a left-wing conspiracy against him. He later asserted that he respected the courts, which is just bully for Canada’s justice system. We hope you have enjoyed the last two woefully entertaining years, because we could be on the verge of playing them all over again. Ford has been thrown from office, reprimanded for his abuse of power and still managed to learn nothing. After a day-and-a-half of eating humble pie, Ford returned to council as brash and bombastic as he ever was, conducting a shouting match with Coun. Adam Vaughan and accusing him of the “shakedown” of a condo developer. The CBC reports that cont'd on pg. 22

That same month, with an election clearly looming, the taxpayerfunded reports began being copied by email to an anonymous, private account, laurier365@ yahoo.com, in addition to departmental officials. The departmental headquarters, including Kenney’s ministerial office, is located at 365 Laurier Ave., West, in Ottawa. The email account is no longer active. Kenney, through his of-

Seven candidates in race to be Ont. Liberal leader A last-minute entrance by former government services minister Harinder Takhar means there are now seven candidates in the race to replace Dalton McGuinty as Liberal leader and premier of Ontario. Takahr announced his candidacy Thursday night on Facebook, with just hours to go before the 5 p.m. Friday deadline to declare, although he plans a formal campaign launch Saturday in his Mississauga riding. He is the sixth candidate from the Greater Toronto Area, leaving Sandra Pupatello of Wind-

sor as the only would-be leader from outside the capital. Pupatello and Gerard Kennedy are the only Liberal leadership candidates who are not currently members of the legislature, but both are former McGuinty cabinet ministers. Pupatello quit in 2011 to work in the private sector, while Kennedy left Ontario politics for the federal scene in 2006, and lost a bid for the national Liberal leadership to Stephane Dion. He also lost his seat in Parliament in the 2011 federal election. All of the other candidates -cont'd on pg. 15

New $20 bill designed to thwart counterfeiters goes into circulation Bank of Canada Bill features Vimy Memorial on the back Canada’s $20 banknote is a favourite of counterfeiters. But beginning Nov. 7, the Bank of Canada will be circulating a new polymer $20 bill that it says will be harder to duplicate. In a statement, the Bank of Canada said the main reason it is issuing the new $20 bill “is to stay ahead of counterfeiting threats.” The front of the bill has a new portrait of Queen Elizabeth and the back has an image of the Vimy Memorial in France. The $20 bill accounts for over half of all Canadian banknotes in

circulation, according to the Bank of Canada. The RCMP reports that 25,039 counterfeit $20 banknotes were passed in 2011, more than any other denomination. Fake $100 bills came second, with 19,466 passed. New $100 polymer banknotes went into circulation in November 2 0 11 a n d t h e n $ 5 0 polymer notes began circulating in March. New $5 and $10 banknotes should be out in 2013. While the critical advantage of polymer over paper currency is that they are

expected to be more secure, they are also supposed to last 2.5 times longer than the paper banknotes. Dramatic increase in counterfeiting, 2000-04 According to Michael Duncan, the assistant director of compliance at the Bank of Canada, “these new notes were born out of necessity.” NEW $20 BILL Zoom in and explore Canada’s new polymer banknote What he means is that, from 2001 to 2004, counterfeiting skyrocketed in Canada. In 2004, 552,980 fake banknotes were

passed here, almost six times the number in 2000. Counterfeiting in Canada was also high by international standards. In 2004, the Bank of Canada introduced new security features to the Canadian Journey series of banknotes. The holographic stripe as well as a ghost image watermark, security thread, see-through number, raised ink and fluorescence made the currency harder to copy.

Joe Fontana, mayor of London, Ont., faces non-confidence motion Politician has been charged with fraud and breach of trust by a public official The mayor of London, Ont., will face more pressure today to step down, after he was charged with three criminal offences. A non-confidence motion will be presented at a meeting of the finance and administration committee at city hall urging Joe Fontana

to take a leave of absence – with pay – until the charges have been dealt with by the courts. Fontana was charged with fraud under $5,000, breach of trust by a public official and uttering forged documents on Wednesday.

Carney picked to lead British central bank Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney has been chosen to run the Bank of England, beginning next summer. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty called it a bittersweet moment Monday as he announced Carney’s departure. The two men worked closely to deal with the recent recession and turmoil in financial markets. Carney’s handling of the recession and lead-

ership won him respect across the world financial community. Flaherty says it’s the first time a foreigner has been tabbed to run Britain’s venerable central bank. Carney called it an honour. “I am honoured to accept this important and demanding role and to succeed Sir Mervyn King with whom I have worked closely over these past five years and from whom I learned

so much,” he said. “This is a critical time for the British, European and global economies; a decisive period for reform of the global financial system including its leading financial centre, the City of London; and a crucial point in the Bank of England’s history as it accepts vital new responsibilities.” Carney was appointed the eighth governor of the Bank of Cana-

da in February 2008. “I am proud of the bank’s contribution to the resilience of the Canadian economy throughout an unprecedented period of global turmoil. The bank is helping to lead the reform of the global financial system.” He will stay on at Canada’s central bank until June 1, and move to his new job on July 1. The Canadian Press

FOCUS Great Minds, Great Issues! Vote Wisely! Asks Joe Kingsley Eyiah, OCT, Brookview Middle School, Toronto-Canada !“Great Minds discuss Issues; Average Minds discuss Events; Small Minds discuss People” Ghanaians go to the polls on December 7 to elect a President and Parliamentarians who would govern the nation for the next four years, God willing. It is the prayer of all wellmeaning Ghanaians, both home and abroad, that this election passes peaceful. As we just saw with the US election, we hope Ghanaians will vote for issues and not just for people; not even just for events that have befallen the country in recent times! Political campaign by Ghanaians (political parties) since the beginning of the year until the sudden demise of our former President Professor John Fifii Attah-Mills this July had been very dirty! The focus of the campaign was more of personal attacks, insults and vilifications. It became apparent then that the Ghanaian electorate

in the country to paint the opponents as devils who do not deserve to be given any mandate to govern Ghana. The discussions of some political figures (people) over the nation’s airwaves were really nasty and very embarrassing!

were been bombarded by politicians with discussion of people vying for the highest office of the country instead of bringing to the fore of their campaign discussion of issues which would bring development to the country. Personalities who suffered most from these personal attacks then were the former President (National Democratic Congress), His Excellency Prof. John Attah Mills of blessed memory and the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo. Party communication and propaganda secretaries as well as serial callers had used the numerous radio stations

Then came the sudden demise of President Prof Attah Mills in July. This event (his death and the subsequent national mourning) ushered some decorum into the political landscape of the country! Bitter enemies in the political arena joined hands to honour the deceased President who dishonoured during serving time. Pastors of the land called politicians to order and sense ruled over greed and animosity. Were some people calling for sympathy votes because of this even? Wait! The course quickly changed from discussing people and even sad national events to discussing issues! Issues that bother on national development like edu-

cation, health, employment, agriculture and housing among others have now been raised, discussed and even debated by the presidential candidates lately. Though it is unfortunate that so much time has been spent in Ghana’s political campaign discussing people, the time

spent on discussing issues must take the better part of the Ghanaian populace and bring the electorate to the ballot box to vote for the party with realistic issues that would move our country forward for the benefit of all. Even overwhelming events which have happened in the country

this year such as the death of President Attah Mills, the collapse of the Melcom building in Accra, and last but not the least, the death of Vice President Alliu just a month before the elections must not influenced voters to vote otherwise. Vote wisely, vote on issues and let peace prevails in Ghana

Ghanaian women trapped in Bahrain Reports reaching Adom News indicate that at least five Ghanaian women have been trapped and are currently under lock and key in the Arab country of Bahrain following the failure of their sponsors to secure them jobs. In an interview with Adom News, the women who identified themselves as Wasina Mahama, Beatrice Mensah, Beatrice Bonsu, Barbara Haruna Hamain and Sheila and hail from different parts of the country said they were

promised jobs as waitresses, hairdressers and house helps but they are being forced to do other jobs including prostitution. Their refusal to comply has resulted in their being locked up and fed on only bread; according to them, even the water is rationed. The embattled Ghanaians in Bahrain told Adom News the cost of their release is being negotiated between their sponsors in Bahrain and potential clients. The Tema office of the

Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), which received the initial report, has since written to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intervene and secure the release of the women. Family members have expressed fear that their loved ones could be lost to them if the Government of Ghana through the Foreign Ministry fails to secure their release soon. Adomonline

Obama’s Second Term: Expectations Barack Obama won reelection for another four years as the president of the United States of America after a bruising contest against Governor Mitt Romney. Within hours of his re-election, the issue of what to expect in Africa from President Obama’s second term has been doing rounds in print and electronic media following the perception in the West and the continent that he had not “engaged significantly” in Africa during the first term. I briefly discuss what could be expected in Barack Obama’s second term. Domestic realities will shape US Foreign Policy in the next four years The immediate clue to the thrust and orientation of the incoming US administration became evident during President Obama’s election night victory speech where he outlined broad nation building priorities at home for the next four years, with little reference to foreign policy issues. These broad priorities include: (1) Addressing the runaway national deficit, now approximately 7% of the GDP; (2) Simplifying the tax code; (3) Enacting comprehensive immigration reforms; and, (4) Pursuing energy independence. Domestic economic concerns dominated both the 2008 and 2012 US elections. The incoming administration must continue work on reviving

a sluggish economy (about 2% growth in the third quarter) and reducing high national unemployment rates, currently at 7.9%. To fully revive the US economy in the next few years, the US government must contend with the fallout from the ongoing economic meltdown in Europe and the slowdown of powerful emerging market economies. Europe’s 11 % u n e m p l o y m e n t rate, unsustainable debt profiles of multiple countries and policy gridlock regarding the way forward portends long term uncertainties. Slowing growth rates in the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) traditionally expected to anchor global economic recovery suggests a long road ahead. The ongoing economic crisis in the West in the last few years has led to the emergence of new leaders committed to an agenda that reflects voter restiveness over domestic priorities and the necessity for prudent foreign policy commitments. Leaders that emerged in the West in the last four years, including the US, the United Kingdom, France and Italy continue to operate a less expansive, less flamboyant and more prudent foreign policy agenda compared to their predecessors. This voter influenced, prudent approach will not change in Western democracies until economic outlook dramatically improves. Candidate Barack Obama’s foreign policy agenda during the reelection campaign

reflected this voter influenced foreign policy agenda. The campaign emphasized close attention to China’s e m e rg i n g e c o n o m i c and political power. Ending the nuclear crisis with Iran was another concern. Concluding the war in Afghanistan, jumpstarting the IsraelPalestinian peace process and responding to the aftermath of 2011 Arab Spring, including the ongoing civil war in Syria were additional campaign promises. African Governments and institutions must come to the table The US-Africa partnership in the next four years will largely depend on whether Africa is willing and able to seize opportunities for stronger, mutually beneficial relationship. African governments and institutions have the unique opportunity to reset policy and program priorities during Barack Obama’s second term by taking stock of the current US domestic realities and taking advantage of the almost universal understanding that Africa’s future is virtually limitless with smart policies and programs. In fact, 2012 and early 2013 present a once-in-a lifetime opportunity for Africa to recalibrate relationship with the United States and China, two most powerful countries going through delicate political transition. Current United States upgraded partnership strategy with Africa is key

5 closest U.S. presidential races since 1940 1960, Kennedy vs. Nixon, 49.7% to 49.5%. Margin: 0.2 percentage points. 2000, Gore vs. Bush, 48.3% to 47.8%. Margin: 0.5. 1968, Humphrey vs. Nixon, 42.4% to 43.4%. Margin 1.0. 1976, Carter vs. Ford, 50% to 48%, Margin 2.0. 2004, Kerry vs. Bush, 48.1% to 50.6 %. Margin 2.5.

During the second term, the Obama administration will rely on its 2012 US Africa Strategy anchored on strong democratic institutions, trade and investment opportunities, and, inclusive economic growth. I had in an earlier article indicated that the revamped US Africa Strategy recasts Africa as an important destination of global prosperity rather than a perpetual recipient of international aid. The US government envisages a self-reliant Africa actively tackling continental problems. P r e s i d e n t O b a m a ’s engagement in Africa in the second term will likely revolve around short and longer term objectives. Short term objectives will focus on expanding existing partnerships. In the longer term, the US government will likely focus on how best to assist African governments and institutions prepare Africa youth of today for future leadership roles in the continent. This commitment is evident in the wellknown Cairo and Accra speeches in his first term. 2013 through 2015 US/ Africa partnership issues In the immediate term within the 2013 through 2015 window, the Obama administration will likely

pay close attention to six major partnership issues in Africa. First, strengthening support for free and fair elections in Africa. Forthcoming elections in Kenya (2013) and Nigeria (2015) will receive special attention. Kenya barely survived the violent aftermath of disputed 2007 national election. Nigeria’s 2015 national election will test collective resolve to end a long history of electoral malpractices and associated violence. Second, maintaining anti-terror partnership networks with African governments, continental institutions and regional political blocs. The US government will continue to provide critical support to anti-terror networks. In particular, the incoming administration will likely collaborate with the African Union and the United Nations to end the bifurcation of Mali by Islamic insurgents. Cross training programs with the military and law enforcement agencies in Africa will continue. Third, working closely with the United Nations and the African Union to end instability in the Great Lakes region of Africa. The incoming administration will press governments in the region to end the war in the

Democratic Republic of Congo, primarily fought over natural resources. Expanded humanitarian assistance to long suffering civilian populations will accompany efforts to end military operations. The US government working with regional partners will continue the push for a logical conclusion to the campaign against the Lord’s Resistance Army. Fourth, emphasizing streamlined multi country, multi-sectoral and multipartnership strategies to address overarching development problems. These problems include food security concerns, drought, timely access to basic healthcare services, affordable educational opportunities, governance and regulatory reforms and sustained support for small and medium enterprises. The incoming administration will emphasize close collaboration with other bilateral agencies, the United Nations system, the organized private sector and civil society. In addition, expect a comprehensive r e v i e w, r e a l i g n m e n t and streamlining of US government agencies dealing with international development assistance. Taxpayers group says national debt to hit $600B The country is about to pass a red ink milestone that the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says is completely unnecessary. The national debt is set to reach $600 billion just seconds before 11:19 p.m. ET Saturday, says the federation, which has set up a “debt clock” to let everyone view the event online. It should never have reached that level, said federation director Gregory Thomas, who blamed the Harper government’s economic stimulus and other spending for the historic debt level. The stimulus spending was unnecessary, Thomas told a Friday news conference. “The economy bounced back and ... we’re going

to be paying those stimulus dollars 20, 30 years from now if we don’t get our act together.” The government says the spending under its socalled economic action plan was necessary to maintain and create jobs during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. But much of it was wasteful, said Thomas, who took particular aim at the government’s advertising spending. “You can’t sit through a football game without seeing all this propaganda about what a terrific job the government’s doing,” he said. “They’re borrowing money to sell Canadians on themselves.” And the debt will keep

climbing as long as the Harper government keeps spending beyond its means, the federation said. The federation did applaud Finance Minister Jim Flaherty’s commitment to balance the budget before the next election. Still, Flaherty acknowledged last month that the fallout from the recession will prevent Ottawa from erasing the debt by 2021. The minister said the government continues to search for ways to cut spending as he prepares a 2013 budget. But as with previous budgets, Flaherty has ruled out both tax increases and cuts to provincial transfers. The Canadian Press

Joe Fontana, mayor of London, Ont., faces non-confidence motion cont'd from pg. 10

Coun. Joni Baechler, who will present the motion on Monday afternoon, said the public is entitled to good government but claims that’s not possible in the city given the criminal proceedings against its mayor. “This has cast a shadow over the mayor and I believe governance in the City of London,” she said. Fontana has said he will not step down and intends to plead not guilty in the case. “I am innocent of all of these charges and I intend to fight as hard as I

can to clear my name,” he said at a news conference on Thursday. “I’ve been given a mandate by the people of London. People call me every day saying they like the work I’m doing as mayor.” The non-confidence motion is expected to easily pass at the finance committee on Monday. But some members of London’s city council say the move is a waste of time because councillors have no legal authority to force the mayor to step down. Prof. Martin Horak, an expert on municipal poli-

tics at London’s Western University, disagrees. “I think that vote is very important because council needs to let the public know where it stands visa-vis what’s happening with Joe Fontana. And although it doesn’t have legal force, it’s of symbolic value,” Horak said. If the motion passes, it will go before the full city council for a vote next month. Horak says if a large majority on council vote against Fontana, it will make it very difficult for him to carry on as the city’s mayor. CBC News

transformation effort of continental institutions in Africa. The ongoing global economic crisis led the US, the European Union, China, Brazil and India to prioritize regional integration of economies. Strengthening continental institutions in Africa is a top global strategic priority. The incoming Obama administration will likely step up effort in this regard. The US government already enjoys robust, close relationship with the African Development Bank. Transformation efforts by the African Union will be an important priority in the second term. In particular, African Union priorities on peace and security, human rights, monitoring of national elections, regional integration and the creation of viable continental organs for banking and investment services will receive close attention. Sixth, launching a public-private Africa Diaspora initiative to promote investment, entrepreneurial and technical linkages and opportunities. The initiative will connect skill sets within Africans in the Diaspora with identified opportunities in specific geographic regions in Africa. The Obama administration’s support for strong Africa Diaspora relationship with Africa is well known. The private sector will play pivotal roles in the initiative since job creation on both sides of the Atlantic will be a top priority. Important partners in the Africa Diaspora initiative will include the World Bank, the African Union, Africa Development Bank, Latin American countries, the Caribbean, Wall Street and organized private sector in Africa.

the incoming Obama administration will build on the modest first term initiative on youth and future leaders in Africa that relied almost exclusively on organizing meetings and conferences in the US. The longer term perspective will be on specific program support for African youth. Expanding tertiary education opportunities in the United States will be an important strategy. Increasing infrastructure and technical support for Africa-based institutions of higher learning to expand access to quality education will be another. Providing opportunities for short term immersion programs on democracy and governance for future leaders will be part of envisaged support. Attention to selfemployment and private sector employment opportunities for the army of educated but idle African youth will be important in the next four years, and possibly beyond. Educated but unemployed African youth have radically transformed the fate of countries such as Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Tunisia and Libya in recent years. The last has not been heard of disaffected, educated and unemployed youth, especially in Sub-Sahara Africa. To improve employment prospects, the US government will likely increase support for skill acquisition and job training programs and expand access to entrepreneurial start off

loans. For uneducated or undereducated youth, targeted vocational training programs, pathways to finish school and increasing access to microcredit facilities will be important. On a broader level, expect concern for the youth to be tied to partnership support for political, education, health, public safety and sports/ recreation programs. Finally, the most likely enduring footprint of an eight-year Barack Obama administration in Africa will be commitment to democracy. Obama’s second term is likely to revolve around a zero tolerance policy against fraudulent and sham elections, contempt for the rule of law, human rights violations and constriction of political space. I expect President Obama to be personally engaged in efforts to strengthen democracy in Africa. In the end, the success and failure of the Obama administration’s second term in Africa will rest largely with the quality of partnership with African governments and institutions. Ultimately, the Obama administration can only supplement the role of African governments and institutions in giving African children a healthy start in life and giving its youth a fair start to adulthood. Not even the American son of a Kenya father can do for Africa what it must do for itself. The African Executive

Possible Peace between Israel and her Neighbors? A Ghanaian Perspective of what it takes to bring Peace

By Kwaku A. Danso

Ghana is a small country in West Africa and has produced one UN Secretary General. Whiles some may argue about the effectiveness of Kofi Annan, most will agree Kofi is not one who will throw a blow first or shoot a gun. We wrote this for GlobalExpress-Ghana (www. globalexpressghana. com) and share it again. We offer some thoughts on this most puzzling issue of our time, the Arab-Israeli or Middle East conflict that has engulfed our lives. In 1973-74 the Western world felt for the first time the way this conflict impacted oil and energy prices, global trade and finance. Adding this to the conflict with Al Qaeda has thwarted peace in America and the West for the last four or more decades since the creation of Israel. The whole world is witness to the conflict between the small nation of Israel, supported by the superpower America, and all her neighbors including Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon and other Middle East nations. An African-centric news organization may not be the best qualified to offer advice on peace, especially since Africa has had her own share of senseless wars in this era, most of them due to internal conflict and what one African Professor calls the “stupidity” of the “buffoon” leaders. However, if there is any lesson to come from the least developed continent, it is that humans can live with nature

cluding 13 children and injuring 440 or just one week make sense? For those advocating for the non-existence of Israel, how do they think their lives will be enhanced if Israel did not exist?

if we realize that they are all living creatures from the same source. All US Presidents in the last forty years, notably from Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, to the current Barack Obama, have invested heavily in time and the American taxpayer funds, and made strides to bring both sides of the conflict together. However it appears the gulf between the two religious and cultural groups stand in the way of peace. For the survival of the modern world, human beings must learn to live and let others live. Anger and hatred that is carried from parents to children, generation to generation, do not seem to make human moral and ethical sense and neither economically. For the members of Hamas and the Palestinians, while we understand there is pain and anger, how does one hope to win by throwing stones at soldiers with guns? Does the idea of shooting say 1,000 missiles in the air at random towards Israel, to possibly kill a handful of people, and lose 70 Palestinians, in-

All human beings have the capacity and ways of making issues come to rest. That concept is not unlike sleeping. It takes some deep thinking to find peace within. What these perpetually warring factions are missing is that the only people who may be at peace may be the dead. We humans assume the dead rest in peace. Perhaps they are. Most of these wounded will live the rest of their lives maimed and in physical and psychological pain. The youth will never forget and they will repeat the same mistakes. Is that the life, peace and prosperity these leaders want? For the Israelis, will destroying communication centers or Palestinian government buildings in retaliation with the collateral or deliberate damage or killing of thousands of the socalled enemy, including women and children, and deploying 30,000 troops bring peace? Will Israel have peace and have a smile on their peoples’ faces if say they killed half of the Palestinians or perhaps wiped them off the surface of the earth with a nuclear missile? Power and material wealth may not necessarily bring peace. Despite the modern economic and physical deprivation and lack of respect, Africa may have a thing or two to teach people who have it all materially. It took Hillary Clinton’s visit to Africa to realize that it takes a village to raise a child. Adults need to teach the children that we need to learn to live and let others live! The

people of Ghana provides an interesting example to share with the world. While neighboring countries may be at war shooting each other, Ghanaians in the last 30 years have lived under the yoke and burden of a killing dictator who after 11 years transformed in 1992 into a fake democracy with all powers vested in the hands of the President for another eight years. When the opposition party leadership of the NPP took over in 2000, they never bothered to change the defective constitution. Ghanaians totally ignore the constitution and their leadership and go about their duties. The people live as all humans do, each struggling to survive despite the massive well known governmental neglect and almost state failure and public corruption. A Ghanaian proverb suggests that the bald headed vulture, known to eat from the dump yard and living as a scavenger, says he acts like a fool but his reward is long life. In Ghana nobody kills a vulture and he has a long life. Nobody is suggesting that the Israelis or the Palestinians do not defend themselves. However the idea and pressure being put by some Republicans in America for a more aggressive US stand for Israel is not helpful. The US cannot be expected to send their troops and war planes to fight for Israel. Some recent comments by some US politicians, especially when Gov. Mitt Romney was trying to grapple the bone of power, that Obama is not doing enough to help Israel, are very irresponsible. It puts a tremendous and unnecessary pressure on President Obama, and we are glad the good people of America saw the peaceful inner strength of the

first African-American President, as well as his heart. Obama carries the gene of the longest surviving humans on earth, from Africa, and we are confident he will guide America through the next domestic battle and fiscal challenges with a cool head, even as he helps bring peace in the Middle East. Perhaps, just perhaps, he can help the Israelis and Palestin-

ians learn to live and let live in peace as neighbors, just as the Americans and Canadians do. (Kwaku A. Danso lives in California, USA. Kathleen Wynne, Glenn Murray, Charles Sousa and Eric Hoskins -- had to follow McGuinty’s order to quit the Ontario cabinet before launching their leadership campaigns. All the leadership hopefuls are in their 50s, except Takhar who is 61, and there hasn’t been a lot of policy differences emerging so far, with each candidate careful not to tread too heavily on the Liberal government’s record. Kennedy made a point of saying he doesn’t carry the baggage from recent scandals, but the Tories point out he was a key cabinet player when McGuinty broke a written pledge not to raise taxes with a health tax of up to $900 for every Ontario worker. Murray has talked about giving northern Ontario more autonomy, so Wynne countered with a promise to strike a cabinet committee on the north, while Sousa said he would speed-up development of mining in the Ring of Fire near James Bay. Kennedy and Wynne have also suggested they would back away from controversial legislation that imposes a two-year wage freeze on most teachers, an issue that has turned a large group of longtime Liberal supporters into angry opponents. Each of the would-be premiers has been busy signing up new Liberal party members who will be eligible to vote for the delegates who will actually vote directly for the next premier. Unlike most parties that opened leadership votes to all party members and allowed online balloting, Ontario Liberals will select about 2,000 delegates, including 16 from each riding to attend the leadership convention. Delegates will be selected at local meetings in all 107 ridings the weekend of Jan. 12, with wouldbe delegates declaring in advance which candi-

IMMIGRATION AND SOCIAL ISSUES By: James A. Kwaatemg, B.A. (Hons), LLB (Hons)

Applying for a Study Permit from Outside to Study in Canada A study permit is the official document issued by an officer that allows a person who is not a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident to study in Canada. Currently, the number of international students entering Canada yearly is around 100,000 and about 9000 students nationwide obtain permanent resident status yearly. This is the situation notwithstanding the fact that the average cost of tuition for international students at universities in Canada is $14,000 a year and the total cost of obtaining a four-year degree from a Canadian university ranges from $80,000 to $140,000. International students contribute about $8 billion to the Canadian economy every year. The statistics provided above should, however, not leave one with the impression that study permits are up for sale in Canada. A study permit applicant must meet certain conditions. The identity of the applicant must be known and proved. A valid passport that would allow the student to return to

Canadian bank account in the name of the student if money has been transferred to Canada; proof of a student or education loan from a financial institution; a bank draft in convertible currency and proof of funding paid from within Canada. the country that issued it would be required before a study permit could be issued. The applicant must also have a letter of acceptance from an educational institution. A study permit application would be dealt with only when the applicant convinces the officer that he or she has been offered an admission to study in a Canadian institution. Mere possession of a letter of acceptance and proof of identity won’t be enough to fetch you a study permit. The student must demonstrate that sufficient funds would be available for him or her throughout the entire duration of the program of studies to take care of the student’s tuition fees, living expenses and return transportation. This could, among other things, be in form of a

The safety and security of Canadians are prime concerns of the Canadian Government. For that matter, a study permit is issued to a foreigner only when the visa issuing authorities are convinced that the foreigner would not pose any risk to the security of Canada. A serious criminal record could therefore be an effective barrier to acquisition of a study permit to study in Canada. To protect the health and safety of Canadians, a study permit applicant is required to be in good health and may be medically examined. An applicant must therefore not refuse to undergo medical examinations if so requested by the Immigration authorities. And, notwithstanding the Government of Can-

ada’s post-graduate work programs to absorb the skilled Canadian trained and educated foreigners, an Immigration officer would want to be satisfied that persons seeking study permits will leave Canada upon completion of their studies. Be informed that permanent residence has never been the basis for issuing study permits. Also, like many other areas in Immigration, changes have been proposed to the current student visa program and

in the next three years there could be conspicuous changes. Student visa applicants might be affected by the system of collecting biometric data for all visitors to Canada. There could be also an enhanced reporting by institutions on the academic activities of the students within the campuses, including monitoring expiration date of study permits. Unsurprisingly also, the requirement for students to study in order to be able to remain in Canada will be strictly en-

forced in the near future. This is a superficial coverage of the student visa program. Seek more advice from Immigration professionals should your situation so necessitate. James A. Kwaateng is an Immigration Law practitioner with offices located at 168A Oakdale Road, Suite 4, Toronto, Ontario. date they support. The leadership convention itself will be held at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto Jan. 25-26. The leadership candidates will square off in a series of debates around the province, beginning Dec. 1 in Ingersoll, followed by Thunder Bay Dec, 9, Ottawa Dec. 18, Ajax Jan. 6 and Toronto on Jan. 9. The Opposition said the next Liberal leader won’t be able to run away from problems that plagued the government, including the $1-billion eHealth scandal, a police probe of the Ornge air ambulance service and the hundreds of millions

of dollars spent to cancel two gas-fired power plants in Oakville and Mississauga. “There is an unbelievable, pent-up anger with the Liberal government,” said Progressive Conservative energy critic Vic Fedeli. “You can feel the anger in the room over the Liberal government and the fact they want them out. I think any of these leadership candidates are going to pay for the sins that they created themselves.” The NDP said people are angry at the Liberals for a host of reasons including cancelling the subsidy to horse racing, closing parks in the north, shutting down the Ontario North-

land Transportation Corporation and the cancelled gas plants. “It’s just one thing after another, and it’s really a sense of this is a government that has over stayed it’s time and sort of lost their vision, and changing the leader won’t bring much change,” said NDP house leader Gilles Bisson. “People now see these as a Liberal brand, they don’t necessarily see it as the McGuinty government, so a new leader is going to have challenges, no question.” The Conservatives released a video Friday mocking the seven leadership candidates as McGuinty clones.

Making Canada’s Asylum System Faster and Fairer New Asylum System Comes into Force December 15, 2012 Ottawa, November 30, 2012 — Canada’s new asylum system, which was included in the Protecting Canada’s Immigration System Act, will come into force on December 15, 2012, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney announced today. “Our changes will make Canada’s asylum system faster and fairer,” said Minister Kenney. “For too long, Canada’s generous asylum system has been vulnerable to abuse. Under the new asylum system, genuine refugees fleeing persecution will receive protection more quickly. At the same time, bogus asylum claimants and those who abuse our generous system at great expense to taxpayers, will be removed much faster.” All eligible asylum claimants will continue to receive a hearing at the independent Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB) based on their individual circumstances. Under the new system, asylum claimants will receive a hearing within 60 days after their claim is referred to the IRB. In contrast, claimants currently wait, on average, close to 600 days to receive a hearing. For the first time in Canadian history, most applicants will have access to a newly-created Refugee Appeal Division (RAD). Failed asylum claimants from countries that have a history of producing genuine refugees will have the benefit of this full fact-based appeal. The new RAD will have the authority to reverse a negative decision by the IRB, if the evidence compels it. For claimants from countries that do not normally produce refugees, their claims will be expedited, but they will still receive the same individualized hearing that all asylum claimants currently receive. Following the example of most democratic countries, the new measures allow the government to identify designated countries of origin (DCOs). Asy-

lum claims from these presumptively “safe” countries, which respect human rights and offer state protection, will be processed on an accelerated basis.

gration System Act is expected to save provinces and territories $1.6 billion over five years in social assistance and education costs.

This means that, for DCO claimants, hearings will be held within 30 or 45 days, depending on whether the asylum claim was made at an inland CIC office or at a port of entry.

Under the new system, failed asylum claimants will be removed from Canada within a year of their final IRB decision, compared to the current situation in which it generally takes 4.5 years to exhaust all recourses and remove a failed asylum claimant. Faster removal of failed claimants will help discourage individuals from using the asylum system to try to jump the immigration queue to enter Canada.

“Last year alone, nearly a quarter of all asylum claims in Canada were made by people from democratic European Union nations – that’s more claims than Canada received from Africa or Asia,” said Minister Kenney. “We’re spending far too much time and taxpayers’ money on bogus claims, and on generous taxfunded health and social benefits for claimants from liberal democracies.” The

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford gets green light to run in by-election cont'd from pg. 7

the battle erupted during a debate over a Queen Street condominium. Vaughan was seeking council approval for a deal he reached with the developer, which would secure $1 million in fees that would go to improving the sidewalks around the building. Ford said Vaughan was trying to extort the condo company, but later retracted his comment. Following the outburst, Vaughan told 680 News that the mayor was simply trying to score political points. “I think we’re all tired of the mayor’s behaviour, poor choice of words and belligerent behaviour. It’s a disturbing pattern, it’s the pattern that has plunged this city into the ambiguity it now finds itself in. I think all of Toronto is as weary of this behaviour as I am,” he told the radio station. While the Ford’s fate remains up in the air, it does seem like things are getting back to business at city hall. For better or worse, Ford is at it again. And the chances that he’s not finished just got a lot better.

The new asylum system also expands provisions that bar serious criminals from even being able to make asylum claims. “Sixty-two percent of all asylum claims

– and virtually all asylum claims for the European Union – were either abandoned or withdrawn by the claimants themselves or rejected by the IRB last year,” said Minister Kenney. “It became abundantly clear that our system needed to be changed. These changes will move our asylum system from one that allows bogus claimants to rely on loopholes and redundant appeals to delay their removals for several years, to a system that hears claims quickly and removes bogus claimants faster. That is in the best interest of Canada, and of legitimate refugees. Canada’s asylum system is one of the most generous in the world and will continue to be under the new and improved system.” Canada’s new asylum system is the result of two laws passed by Parliament — the Balanced Refugee Reform Act (June 2010) and the Protecting Canada’s Immigration System Act (June 2012).

Presidential candidates converge in Kumasi to endorse peace We commit to reducing their occurrence in the short term and eradicating them in the medium to long term. We intend to speak out against all such acts whether committed from within the ranks of our party or our opponents. We will conduct our campaigns in such a way that the security forces can carry out their mandate of ensuring law and order at all levels. We will intensify the education campaign so teach our followers of the electoral codes of conduct. We also pledge to hold ourselves mutually accountable as peers in promoting fair, peaceful elections. We commend highly the National Peace Council and Palace for organizing this historic meeting and all the actors whose participation demonstrated the desire for fair, just democracy in Ghana. Two crucial principals to democratic governance contained herein: we the presidential candidates, having participated in the first high level meeting meant to reduce ongoing violence, impunity, and fraud, and conscious of the fact that the meeting took place close to the election and in a political and social context in which the public is justifiably concerned about electoral

violence, and recognizing that fair and peaceful elections depend on the enforcement of electoral laws and the support of parties for these laws, and responding to the growing demand for the punishment of electoral crimes through fair, timely trials, motivating this historic meeting, we the candidates, conscious of our membership in the community of national leaders and the responsibilities to security that these offices carry, declare that it is time to take a definite stand against electoral violence impunity, and injustice, which are contrary to the collective good and can be stopped through collective leadership efforts. I invite the candidates to sign the Kumasi Declaration, which they have read and whose contents they agreed to. They sign on behalf of themselves, their party followers, and the people of Ghana. We must not deploy violence to seize ballot boxes, chase opponents from our strongholds, and prevent people from voting. Elections must not victimize those whose mandate the candidates are seeking. To the contrary, it should be a matter of national pride and joy given that it presents us the opportunity to enjoy the blessings of liberty.

All powers of government spring from the sovereign will of the people, one instituted through a voting process not marred by intimidation or manipulation. The citizens of this country are entitled to exercise their right to vote in the same way that judges have the right and obligation to judge. I am encouraged that all candidates have responded positively to the invitation by this meeting’s organizers. Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood said: It is extremely important that we have elections with integrity which are free, fair, peaceful and transparent and will produce an outcome that is mutually satisfactory. God moved us as a nation, and macho men from previous elections have pledged not to interfere this time around. As the only independent candidate, I say let us think about Ghana and about peace, that we might move beyond the horizon of 2012 elections so that we can fight our common enemies of corruption and poverty. God bless us. Power must not come at the expense of the blood of the people. We are

here this afternoon, all of us yearning for peace. Let us walk the talk so that peace might prevail here, and our nation will once again appear on the world map as the oracle of world peace. Because my mother is 80

years old and has metal in her leg. If there is violence, how will I be able to carry her? There are pregnant women and there are children here. Today, if you have invited all of us and our religious and traditional

leaders are here, why is it that when we are running this nation, we relegate them to the background? We must all reflect on the fact that until we include these leaders in our democracy, our lives will continue to be threatened. cont'd on pg. 30

speeded up for us. We are having to accomplish in 10 years what it took European nations 2000 years to accomplish. Africa is having to compress in a short time her own equivalent of the Roman Conquest, the Viking marauders, the Black Death, feudalism, Civil War, the Industrial Revolution with its dark satanic mills, capitalism, the poverty act, the union of the four warring nations and the unholy spoils of colonialism – all into a few solitary decades. There is however another way to read history. It could be said that African nations have emerged from the long reality of their selfhood into a different time and are engaged in a complex historical adjustment. We need to define history more accurately, and the history of African people, the Bantu, the Zulu, the Yarubas, to give a tiny example, is long, unique and needs to be written and studied. History is not the story of the impact of the western world on the African world; that is a small part of our history. History is not objective. The meaning of history keeps on revealing itself through time. Like a text of infinite interpretability,

history yields new meanings in relation to the eyes that behold it and the pressures of the times. History may be memory, history may be vengeance, history may be redemption – but whatever history is, it is too soon to extrapolate the meaning of our recent histories. Those who write about history in haste and fall into quick judgements, find that the long unfolding of events change the meaning of the facts upon which they base their judgements. Time is a great ironist. The historian who makes a quick judgement again the United States of America right in the middle of her apocalyptic Civil War, would be made fooling by the unfolding destiny of that nation. History may be fact, history may be a dream, history may be revelation. It is not how things are that count, it’s what you do with them, what vision you have and with what strength you march towards that vision. We need a new consciousness. History is always responsive to a new consciousness. The African Executive

All across the world in the late fifties and sixties could be heard what Byron once called the First Dance of Freedom. Not long afterwards came the cry of failure as civil wars, tribalism, coups and corruption descended on the recent freedom dances. Then came the long decades of animi, that was such a feast of gloating and salivation for western observers. People emerged from the African world into a European-shaped reality in two or three generations and no one wonders that there would be some confusion. People entered an arena in which others have been shaping themselves as nation states over hundreds of year and no one wonders that they would at first seem inadequate. The fact is, we might have lost control of our self-perception. We might have lost control of how we see ourselves in the modern world. We see ourselves and measure ourselves with outwardly determined standards. We don’t play our game. We don’t choose our values; but more seriously, emerging from African reality into modern reality has had one major effect: time has gotten

Freedom: Where Has it Put Africa A freedom statue in Lusaka, Zambia Freedom may just turn out to be a very small part of the true story of a people. The real story begins with what they did with that freedom. This has been the real challenge of Africa. This has been the real challenge of our times. Can we make something worthwhile of our freedom? Can we be fruitful and workable nations? Can we create a good life for our people? But more crucially, can we make sustained and important contributions to the world and help in our own way to take forward human civilisation? On the whole it can be said that African nations began with hope, fell in chaos and staggered into dependency. Or to take another variation, it can be said that African nations began in unity, collapsed into multiplicity and stumble in division. Or to weave one more jazz note of history; that African nations began in dreams, were overwhelmed by reality and stumble about in nightmare. Or to take a classical turn, African nations came, saw and squandered.

BUSINESS Happy Holidays is for Woosses!!!!!

Investment Choices

By: Jayson Schwarz

By Eddie Twumasi Smith Bsc(Hons) Chem Eng, MBA,CGA, CPA

Life basic necessitiessuch as food, clothing, shelter and taxes takes away the entirety of many people’s earning, especially for those of us who have 8 hours a day job. Although some Canadians do struggle for basic necessities, the bigger problem is, most Canadians do consider just about everything-eating out, driving new cars, hopping on an airplane for vacation to be a necessity. On the contrary, many don’t think putting money aside to work for them as a necessity or an activity that requires the same measure of attention throughout their life time. We tend to spend most of our earnings on the so call basic necessities before we even think about spending on investment. The usual complaint is, there is not enough left after all those basic necessities are taken care of. If we want to achieve important personal and financial goals, such as owing a home, starting a business, helping your kids through university, retiring with comfortable income and so on, we have to learn how to invest well. In these contemporary times where income is dwindling due to inflation and cost of living and unemployment rate on the rise, the need for us to evaluate our choices and what is considered basic necessity has become more important now than before. Many of us leave all investment choices to our bank/RRSP managers or personal financial planner to select investment options without asking the right questions or verifying for ourselves what or where our “hard” earned savings is being invested. It is about time we start looking at what we spend on and how much we spend. It is about time we re-evaluate our values or what we spend on and why, which will affect our habits and our habits impact our behaviour and

the sum total of behaviour shapes our character and our character defines our personality or life style or patterns in life. Having sufficient financial resources or the lack of it can sometimes be traced to our choices and habits. The “gospel” according Warren Buffett succinctly put it this way, save before you spend and not spend before you save. According to Warren Buffet, changing our habits on savings and spending is the first basic necessity for wealth creation. At different age or stage in our lives our tolerance or tendency to risk of loss of investment varies, hence it is vital for us to measure our affinity or aversion for risk before deciding on what type of investment vehicle we invest in to meet our financial and investment goals. Some Investment Options 1.0 Government of Canada bonds ?Federal bonds are among the safest investments around. The biggest risk is that a country will default, but it’s highly unlikely that Canada, which is one of the fiscally strongest G7 countries, will go bankrupt. Because it’s so safe, the yield or interest investors receive for holding a bond is lower than other bonds. It’s especially small today because of our extremely low interest rates as of October 2011, a five-year Government of Canada bond pays about 1.61 per cent. Still, if you’re scared of stocks, it’s a great way to save your money. 2.0 Corporate bonds? corporate bonds can be risky, but they can also give your portfolio a much-needed income infusion. Essentially, you’re lending business money and in return they’re paying you interest. A company is more likely to go bankrupt than a country, so investors get a higher yield on corporate debt than on federal bonds often at least two per cent higher, with some corporate bonds offering even more income. Corporate bonds are still considered safer than stocks, but make sure to stick to highly rated bonds (all bonds are rated by rating agencies such as Standard & Poor’s) BBB and above. Be careful with lower-

rated bonds (ratings go from AAA, which is the best, to D, the worst) as there’s more of a chance the company will default on its loans and you’ll lose your investment. 3.0 Mutual Funds A mutual fund is a type of professionally-managed collective investment vehicle that pools money from many investors to purchase securities. While there is no legal definition of mutual fund, the term is most commonly applied only to those collective investment vehicles that are regulated, available to the general public and openended in nature. Hedge funds are not considered a type of mutual fund. Mutual funds are packaged in many different “flavours” or industries. Depending on your industry preference or risk tolerance you can make your selection accordingly. 4.0 Exchange Funds (EFTs)

Traded

An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is an investment fund traded on stock exchanges, much like stocks. An ETF holds assets such as stocks, commodities, or bonds, and trades close to its net asset value over the course of the trading day. Most ETFs track an index, such as a stock index or bond index. ETFs may be attractive as investments because of their low costs, tax efficiency, and stock-like features. ETF combines the valuation feature of a mutual fund or unit investment trust, which can be bought or sold at the end of each trading day for its net asset value, with the tradability feature of a closed-end fund, which trades throughout the trading day at prices that may be more or less than its net asset value. 5.0 Stocks Investment in dividend paying stocks with potential for capital appreciation. Some people are of the view that stock trading is a risky investment and not a place for the faint hearted. I have a different view from this perception. Stocks selected based on strong fundamentals and leading factors can outperform other investment vehicles mentioned beforehand.

I am Jewish and fairly observant and frankly I love Christmas. Not the religious, Jesus is born Christmas, but the Peace on earth, good will t’ords men Christmas. I love the lights, the brotherhood and the feeling of giving. I cannot for the life of me, figure out why people are threatened, or offended by someone answering the phone or greeting them with Merry Christmas. Duh. I grew up in Oshawa, Ontario and went to Sunset Heights Public School. We said the Lord’s Prayer every morning and I did not go up in flames. Oh and by the way 99% of it comes from the Torah (the Jewish Bible) and every Christmas we all sang Christmas Carols. I love Christmas Carols. Hmmm Jingle Bells, White Christmas; oh my goodness it ruined me. I have one extremely observant son living with his wife and my grandchildren in Israel and 2 observant children here. Ok the Christmas stuff converted me, perverted me and ruined my life. NOT ON A GOOD DAY. Ladies and Gentlemen, we live in a country founded on true Judeo/ Christian principles. Not the religious kind but the values kind. In the last census 77% of Canadians are Christian, 17% believe in God without religion. Only 6% therefore appear not to like Merry Christmas. The heck with them!!!!!!!. Wait, that means the majority is changing this country for a vocal, loud, obnoxious minority that hold no real Canadian values by definition.

Why should the rest of us have to forego the traditional greeting because it offends some twit with a complex. We as Canadians are forgetting that this country allows us all the freedom to worship and believe the way we want, so you have the option to say “Merry Christmas” or not. If you are a person who is so insecure in your beliefs, that someone saying Merry Christmas is offensive, pack up and go back to the dark, horrible, oppressive, regimes that you or your ancestors fled in order to come and join this wonderful nation with values that are strong and free. !!!! My Roman Catholic receptionist has been instructed to answer the phone at my law firm, Merry Christmas. Yes, we will have a Christmas Tree and a Menorah in the lobby and we will respect each others’ values and beliefs and not be offended by either. I personally am fed up with political correctness. Our politicians and all of us need to recognise that this is Canada and we have good healthy traditions based on fellowship, respect and brotherly love and we should not have to change them because someone who has not been part of those traditions does not like them!!!! I challenge all of you to say Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and whatever else makes you feel good. In closing I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and God Bless Canada.

TALKING FINANCES Attitude and Successful Outcomes By: Gabriel Quayson, Toronto Working for a new boss can present its own series of challenges and opportunities. It’ easier, however, when you know where the boss is coming from. Toward that end, I would like to share with you my beliefs and expectations about ATTITUDE. I believe attitude is essential to success and that it is the foundation of your financial success and ultimately your happiness. The intent of this article is to aid you in discovering what face you bring to the game of life on a daily basis. The face you bring to the game will determine the extent of your success or lack of, as well as your sadness or happiness. Your attitudes are the window through which you see the world. Are you seeing sunshine or darkness, opportunities or problems, half empty or a half full glass? The

choice is yours. Your power to choose is an enormous gift. You can choose to act or react. You can build, or you can destroy. You can lead or follow. You can experience poverty or abundance. You can persevere, or you can quit. But no matter what, it is your choice. The physical body of an individual can be placed in prison, but his spirit and energy will be free. This is exemplified by the Nelson Mandela story. His physical body was controlled, but he prepared his mind to be President upon the release of his physical body. Henry Ford noted “whether you believe you can or believe you can’t, you are right. Develop a “yes I can attitude”. Individual and situational accomplishments prove that “yes I can” works at both the individual and organizational levels.

The key to being an optimist is focusing on your strengths rather than your weaknesses, examining your opportunities rather than dwelling on problems. Imagine what can be, rather than what might have been. Think about the enormous energy that is required to move against the current in a river, as opposed to going with the flow of current. If you approach situations with a positive attitude and focuses on your area of strength, you will achieve abundance with minimum effort. Ann Landers indicated, “Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life and

when it comes, hold your head high, look it squarely in the eye and say, “I will be bigger than you. You cannot defeat me” You will make mistakes but everybody does. Learn from them and go on. Worrying about something that happened yesterday is pointless and wasteful of your creative energy. Instead, use today to cultivate positive energy. Instead, use today to cultivate positive attitudes and develop solid plans of action that lead to your goals. Be enthusiastic about your goals. Your positive attitude must prevail. Never surrender to pessimism. Great discoveries and great enterprises were never achieved by pessimists. Greet each day with optimism. If we bring rain, gloom, and darkness to our pursuit, our expectations and our results will reflect this outlook. If we bring hope and light to our pursuit, the chances of success are greater and that at-

titude can inspire others. Develop a plan for positive outcomes for your life and work. Being an effective risk-taker requires you to use your power to think, plan, create and act. You become a winner by playing to win, not by avoiding the loss. You must also analyze your actions vs. your outcomes and adjust where needed. This continuation of analysis must be on-going until desire results are achieved. The ability to perform the above noted requires a positive mental attitude when other courses of action are not success until a suc-

Immigration Dept. spends near $750K to track ethnic media reports on Minister Kenney cont'd from pg. 6

ficials, referred all comment to the department. Nancy Caron, a spokeswoman for Citizenship and Immigration, said the ministerial perceptions exercise was “one trial of many” and that the department was not asked to track the issue. “Media monitoring is something that’s done all year round and it’s part of the (government of Canada) communications policy — whether there’s an election or not,” Caron said. As for the “laurier365” email address, Caron said it is “an external back-up email used by Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s media monitoring team when the CIC email system is down or security filters inadvertently stop delivery of incoming documents.” Robert Shepherd, a Carleton University expert in public governance and ethics, said the Harper government has spent a great deal of time, energy and public dollars on communications. “This is all about understanding where the votes are,” Shepherd said in an interview. Shepherd, who ran a management consulting firm that advised a

range of federal government departments for two decades before joining Carleton’s school of public policy and administration in 2007, said the practice falls into an ethical grey zone. “If you buy into the argument that you’re the government in power and the bureaucracy is there to support the executive branch, then just about anything goes,” he said. But media monitoring of partisan events — especially after an election writ is dropped — is a clear abuse of departmental resources, he added. “If it’s serving a partisan interest, then yes, that is offline — very much so when an election is on.” Indeed, during the sixweek election campaign in 2011, the media monitoring continued. A report on Conservative candidate Parm Gill in Brampton, Ont., raising $25,000 during the 2011 campaign got a “positive” mention, as did Harper’s campaign appearance at a Khalsa Diwan Society event in Vancouver. “Jason Kenney: We seek a majority in Parliament” was the headline from the Mar. 31 publication Shalom Toronto, with a “positive” assess-

ment under the subject heading “Multiculturalism — antisemitism.” Under “Immigration — Policy,” the April 4 report opens with Sing Tao’s item on Kenney warning that “minority or coalition government may cause economy to collapse.” There’s a report on then-Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff’s campaign promise on family reunification and various reports on Liberal Ruby Dhalla — a targeted MP who lost her seat to Conservatives. Under “Immigration — Policy,” the April 7 report leads with a story from the Canadian Punjabi Post in which a campaigning Bal Gosal, now Harper’s minister for sport, praised Kenney for immigration reforms, “cutting down the crime rate in Canada” and addressing human smuggling and fraudulent marriage. The coverage was rated “positive.” Caron said media monitoring is an automated system linked to keywords. “We have to be informed of all that’s going on,” regardless of whether an election is underway or not, she said.

Presidential candidates converge in Kumasi to endorse peace cont'd from pg. 26 How long can we remain in this state of apprehension any time an election comes around? Obama advised us that if our lives are challenged, it means we need to take another look at the democracy we are practicing. Independent candidate Joseph Osei Yeboah said: Today, our collective coexistence is being threatened as we seek a democracy that will ensure our development. That’s how we will have peace. The youth of the country want it. Thank you. The only times Ghanaians become violent is when they feel cheated or that justice has not been done. Whatever party the violence comes from, you must hold them accountable.

The president vows peace and will stand for peace. If someone has given you a gun, told you to steal a ballot box, or do something else illegal, for God’s sake please don’t do it. Everyone hearing us today is going to sign a public statement here pledging their commitment to peace and electoral fairness. The only thing I see left is our sense of integrity and honesty. Everywhere I go, I have heard that people want peace. Ghanaians are among the most peaceful people in the world. We are praying for peace, Muslims and Christians.

We are all committed to peace in this country. I am here on behalf of Dr. Sakara, who for reasons beyond his control could not be here (he was out of the country and could not get a flight in time.) The Convention People’s Party (CPP’s) Abu Sakara, represented at this meeting by his Vice, Sherita Sarpong stated that: Thank you to all the former presidents, Madame Chief Justice, the head of the security agencies, the presidential candidates, and everyone here and those listening to us today. Many leaders have sacrificed their lives to maintain this peace so that we might inherit it. We want peace. Thank you Joy online.

Reform Ghana’s Education Black Maidens Nominated System before Free High For CAF Awards School Program By Kwabena Akuoko, MSW, RSW, Toronto

One of the most important resources for Ghana’s future development or economic viability is its young people. It is therefore of utmost importance to give all children and adolescents quality educational opportunities that will allow them to optimize their learning potentials. Excellent education is the best pathway to preparing young people for the future. Consequently, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its leader must be applauded for at least putting forth an education policy that includes a free Senior High School (SHS) program. Not surprisingly therefore, the NPP’s planned free SHS idea has unmistakably garnered a lot of attention and stimulated the national debate on education as the December 7 election draws to a final close. While I welcome the NPP’s proposed free SHS, I think the idea needs to be shelved at least for now in order to first fix the country’s deteriorating education system. We need to set our priorities straight by systematically improving the primary and secondary education system first. I strongly believe that free SHS before comprehensive reforms of the country’s education system amounts to misplaced priorities simply because measured against international standards; Ghana’s current education system is obviously not among the best in the world. Right now we have what many have described as education divide in our country. Private junior and senior high schools are for example fundamentally better off than publicly funded schools in terms of infrastructure and learning materials. Therefore, instead of free SHS, the focal point should be on broad based educational reform as we march through the 21st century. Free senior secondary school is not only bold and noble step, but very appealing in a country, which attaches great importance to education. However, contrary to free education of any sort at any level, we must first focus on reforming the current system, which seems to have deteriorated to the core. Free SHS should not be a priority when children study under trees in many parts of the country owing to the lack of classrooms and quality learning environments. When old school buildings are crumbling, and students in public junior and senior secondary schools do not even have text books and other important supplies such as computers and science laboratory materials and others, it is apparent that free education should not be a priority at least for now. The NPP’s proposed free SHS policy while appealing and possibly achievable should be put on hold in the interim in order to improve on other areas of the education system for the sake of all of our young learners. We need to do what is best for all Ghanaian students by investing in the entire education system ranging from primary through post-sec-

ondary levels. We also need to ensure that all Ghanaian primary school pupils, junior and high school students as well as post-secondary students make the most of their potentials through the education they receive. This is in line with the notion that in today’s world, all young people deserve quality education that was once reserved for the privilege few. Ghana must strive to have a firm education foundation to build on, and make an ongoing commitment to the twofold educational goals of equity and excellence through sound and wideranging reforms beginning first with primary, junior and high schools. We must thus utilize our limited resources towards innovations at all levels of the current education system in order to open up new possibilities, which contribute to knowledge and bring about what will work best for the benefit of young people from different socio-economic backgrounds as well as those in urban and rural areas. We cannot afford further deterioration of the current system in which educational opportunities or better schools are not available to all young people equally due to a variety of reasons such as poverty or which part of the country they reside. Instead of free schooling at only one particular level as proposed by the NPP, we need to invest in, and overhaul the entire system so that public and private schools would be on equal footing in preparing all Ghanaian children for equal primary, junior and senior secondary and ultimately postsecondary educational opportunities. Finally, one important area, which needs to be considered as far as wideranging reforms are concerned relates to teacher education. We need to do what is the best for our young students by investing in their teachers’ education. Studies have shown that nothing transforms a nation and its children’s education than a better teacher education. Teachers must be properly trained by equipping them with the tools or proficiencies they need to teach all children properly and equally. Thus, investment in teachers through quality teacher education is necessary to inspire young students. Reforming Ghana’s primary, junior, senior technical/vocational education along with the teacher training, polytechnic and university education must be a first priority before we move towards free senior high school as proposed by the NPP. The current national debate on education should be about how to comprehensively reform the current system at all levels instead of free schooling at just one level. We must not rush to implement free senior secondary school education program without looking at the overall education picture. Broadly speaking, Ghana’s education system is broken and it needs to be fixed before the proposed free SHS program is implemented.

Joshua Clottey Hits Back At Brother Former International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion Joshua ‘The Hitter’ Clottey, has reacted to his big brother, Emmanuel Clottey’s recent media reports. The senior brother had accused Joshua of stopping his (Emmanuel) fights and referring to him as a psychologically disturbed person. Joshua however told Daily Guide Sports exclusively that the reason for his actions was due to his exceptional interest in the wellbeing of his senior sibling. “I have realized he is not a mentally stable person at the moment, basically because of his marital issues and the fact that he is jobless at the moment. “I watched his last fight against Michael Alvarado. A blow sent him down in the last round and it took the medical team close to 11 minutes to revive him. “I am afraid he will suffer the same fate should he go back to the ring, hence my actions,” said Joshua. He said three things had let his brother down- his marriage, stubbornness to boxing managers and failure to heed his (Joshua’s)

advice to stay in the US. Joshua revealed that despite the brother’s failure to heed his counsel, he kept remitting him on monthly basis until recently when the older one went to the media to ‘wash the family’s dirty linen in public’. The former World champion said he had tried several times to draw his big brother to himself because of his recent precarious situation, but to no avail.“I asked him to join me at my East Legon residence but he has refused. My brother, the problem started when he told me he was coming to Ghana and I told him to stay and work in the US. “His former manager also advised him on the same issue but he will not listen. He approached me for financial assistance so he would not become a liability, I consented and gave him and the spouse GHC9,000 but nothing good came out of it. “You see, it’s a long story, but let me summarize it. He recently asked me to pay his children’s fees and I told him I can’t do that because if I fail to continue in future it will create problems between us.

“He also asked for a VW saloon car I was using, but I refused because I have realized his jobless situation will make it impossible for him to fuel the car, let alone maintain it. “My advice to him against the lady he married is one of the reasons he has become bitter, but as we speak, his marriage is hitting the rocks. “He would not listen. I even decided to make him my assistant trainer so that the money I pay the trainers will go to him but he will not take my advice. “For now, I spend close to GHC3,000 a month on our father’s chronic ailment as well as other family commitments, don’t forget I also have my responsibilities, ” Joshua added. To Joshua, supporting each other as siblings has always been his priority, but his big brother is not cooperating with him. “I love the Gyan brothers so much because of how they relate to each other. I admire Barfuor so much because you see him supporting the junior one, Asamoah all the time, but the same cannot be said about the Clottey brothers.”

Frankly Speaking Lessons from Barack Obama’s Victory By Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg Once upon the time, over five hundred years ago, a bunch of restless sailors from Portugal, looking for some work to do decided to sail on the Atlantic Ocean around the West Coast of Africa. They landed at a small fishing village called Edina by the local people. Through series of lies, deceit, manipulations and intimidation these sailors, then masquerading as Missionaries in long white flowing cassocks with the Bible tucked under their armpits, succeeded in claiming this territory for their King far away in Portugal. This was the beginning of colonialism in West Africa. Around the same time another guy from Britain known as Cecil Rhodes also made it into the heart of Central, Southern and East Africa around what is now Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia), which he named after himself. Other Europeans also followed. Among them was David Livingstone, who like the Portuguese, came to Africa in his white flowing cassock with a bible under his armpit wearing the title of “missionary”. Other nations and their “explorers” from Germany, Belgium, France and Italy followed. It was a mad rush for free land and its resources in a continent they called the “Dark Continent”. Why “dark”? Yes, they could hide there and steal without any body challenging them. And stealing of the continent’s resources they did with utter impunity. They established colonial armies in the colonies around Africa

from which they drafted our great grandfathers to fight their wars for them around the world notably in the Far East, in India, Burma and so on. They also collected a large number of our great grandfathers and great grandmothers and sold them to their cousins on another continents called Americas to work for them as their slaves. The colonial British Army officers in Kenya in East Africa hired an old man to work for them as a cook. This old man gave birth to a son he named Hussein Obama. This son traveled at some point to the United States of America to study the White Man’s book. While in the United States, Hussein met a charming White woman and had a baby with her. He named the baby boy Barack. He left America back to his native country of Kenya. Before he left he whispered this advice into the ears of his son: “Barack, hold your head high, study the White man’s ways and his big books and one day you will rule the White man’s land just like they came to rule our land”. The young lad took his father’s advice seriously and continued to study the big books and ways of the White man. After studying the

White man’s ways for a while, he decided to make his way to where the White man makes all the laws for the United States, the Senate. After working in the Senate for a few years, Barack decided to make a run for the highest office in the land: the Presidency of the United States of America! People laughed at him. His friends and some colleagues mocked him. This boy must be getting off his head, they mocked. A half Black man with ancestry from the “Dark Continent” wanting to rule the “headquarter” of the White Man, the United States of America? But Barack kept his cool and prodded on. He launched his campaign in 2007 amid strong challenges from the top names in the White man’s country including the popular wife of a former popular President. He beat all of them. Then it came to the big fight. The White people in the other camp put up a former soldier named John Mcain to challenge Barack for the Presidency. Barack trounced him and won the Presidency of the United States of America on November 4, 2008. The White people were shocked: a half Black man from Africa taking over the White Man’s country of the United States of America? Barack’s victory was even more significant against the background that the big house where the White man’s “headman” lives, called the “White House” in a City Called Washington, DC, was built with the free labour, blood and sweat of the ancestors of Black people who were

forced into America as slaves. So in winning the Presidency of the United States and going to live in the White House, Barack was only re-writing history and taking over the house that our great grandfathers built. This was sweet and historic. The White people never learnt any lesson from the victory of Barack Obama in November 2008. They vowed to “take their country back” from Barack and the Black men who were defiling the “White House”. Right from day one when Barack became the President of the United States, the White people vowed that they will make him “a one-time president”, meaning he will not go beyond his first four year term. Barack said little. He kept on doing the work that the real people had entrusted him to do. He kept remembering what his father had whispered into his ears before he left. Barack’s mission was therefore to fulfil the “dreams of my father” which he had earlier written into a book. The contest to unseat Barack Obama from the “White House” of his great grandfathers began again. Initially there were about fifteen angry White men, one angry White woman and a confused Black Man from the Republican Party who were vying for the chance to confront and challenge Barack in the next fight for the “White House”. In the final analysis, they settled on a very angry White Man called Mitt Romney who openly displayed and verbalized his hatred of the Black man and anybody else who did not

look white. He included young women and young people on his list of people he hated. He classified them as parasites and cheap hangerson. In a now infamous speech which will haunt him for the rest of his life, “Daddy” Mitt said the following about the group listed above: There are 47% of the people…who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims…who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it…These are people who pay no income tax…These are people who will vote for the president (Barack) no matter what…My job is not to worry about those people”. As he would later learn very painfully, his real job was actually to learn and worry about “those people”: Black people, Latinos, young men and women and the disabled. “These people” did not

complain when Daddy Mitt insulted them. They said nothing. They just organized and organized and organized. And on the judgement day on the sixth day of November, Two Thousand and Twelve in the Year of our Lord, they showed Daddy Mitt and the angry, bored White people who form what is known as the Republican Party in the United States of America who they should really “worry” about. They voted massively to send Barack back to live in the White House that his great grandfathers built to continue to work for everybody including the angry White men. Yes, this was real power to the people at play. We hope Daddy Mitt and his bunch have learnt real life lessons from the results of this last US Presidential election. They better sit up because we will repeat this performance one day again…soon!!

Community Concerns

Workplace Bullying is equally harmful and dangerous By Golda Abena Quayson

Bullying is usually seen as acts or verbal comments that could ‘mentally’ hurt or isolate a person in the workplace. Sometimes, bullying can involve negative physical contact as well. Bullying usually involves repeated incidents or a pattern of behaviour that is intended to intimidate, offend, degrade or humiliate a particular person or group of people. It has also been described as the assertion of power through aggression. There is a lot of talk and expression of concern and disgust at bullying in schools and off campus including cyber bullying. This mostly involves youth. But what is not being talked about or being ignored is another very dangerous and disturbing form of bullying, directed at adults. This is the arena of “work-place bullying”. Work place bullying or Mobbing unlike childhood bullying, is the tendency of individuals or groups to use persistent aggressive or unreasonable behavior against a co-worker or subordinate. Workplace bullying can include such tactics as verbal, nonverbal, psychological, physical abuse and humiliation. This type of aggression is particularly difficult because, unlike the typical forms of school bullying, workplace bullies often operate within the established rules and policies of their organization and their society. Bullying in the workplace is, in the majority of cases, reported as having been perpetrated by management and takes a wide variety of forms. In my last article I wrote about cyber-bullying emphasizing on school children, teens and young adults who are using the technology to destroy one another. But what we should all know is that, these young women and men carry these behaviors into their working environments as adults if they are not checked. Workplace bullying takes these forms: Serial bullying — the source of all dysfunction can be traced to one individual, who picks on one employee after another and destroys them, then moves on to another. It is probably the most common type of bullying at work. Secondary bullying is the pressure of having to deal with a serial bully which causes the general behaviour of

the victim to decline and sink to the lowest level. Pair bullying: this takes place with two people, one active and verbal, the other often watching and listening. Gang bullies or group bullying: is a serial bully with colleagues. Gangs can occur anywhere, but flourish in corporate bullying climates. It is often called and usually involves scapegoating and victimization. There is also vicarious bullying in which two parties are encouraged to fight. This is the typical triangulation, where the aggression gets passed around. That particular co-worker gets bullied by almost everyone. Interestingly, there is Fashion Bullying where others make funny jokes about someone’s way of dressing, just because the person is not wearing brand names clothing to workplace or not dressing like them. Regulation bullying — where a serial bully forces their target to comply with rules, regulations, procedures or laws regardless of their appropriateness, applicability or necessity. This is mostly used by bosses and mangers. Residual bullying — after the serial bully has left or been fired, the behavior continues. It can go on for years. Legal bullying — the bringing of a vexatious legal action to control and punish a person. It is one of the nastiest forms of bullying. Also of note is Pressure bullying or unwitting bullying which is having to work to unrealistic time scales and/or inadequate resources. It is mostly used by retailers/fast food places/restaurant/grocery stores and factories. Corporate bullying is where an employer abuses an employee with impunity, knowing the law is weak and the job market is soft. Organizational bullying is a combination of pressure bullying and corporate bullying. This occurs when an organization struggles to

adapt to changing markets, reduced income, cuts in budgets, imposed expectations and other extreme pressures. Institutional bullying is usually entrenched and is accepted as part of the culture. Client bullying is when an employee is bullied by those they serve. The victims are usually subway attendants/public servants/ nurses and frontline workers. Cyber bullying, as mentioned previously is the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behaviour by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others. Typical examples of work place bullying include: spreading malicious rumours, gossip, or innuendo that is not true, excluding or isolating someone socially, intimidating a person, undermining or deliberately impeding a person’s work, physically abusing or threatening abuse, removing areas of responsibilities without cause, constantly changing work guidelines, establishing impossible deadlines that will set up the individual to fail, withholding necessary information or purposefully giving the wrong information, making jokes that are ‘obviously offensive’ by spoken word or e-mail. Some employers have a habit of intruding on a person’s privacy by pestering, spying or stalking, assigning unreasonable duties or workload which are unfavourable to one person, in a way that creates unnecessary pressure, under work - creating a feeling of uselessness, yelling or using profanity, criticising a person persistently or constantly, belittling a person’s opinions. They also include unwarranted or undeserved punishment. Examples of these are blocking applications for training, leave or promotion, tampering with a person’s personal belongings or work equipment. How can bullying affects individuals? It is sometimes hard to know if bullying is happening at the workplace. Many studies acknowledge that there is a “fine line” between strong management tactics and bullying. Comments that are objective and are cont'd on pg. 45

DOES YOUR TEEN NEED A DRUG USE INTERVENTION?

It is an open secret that many of our teenage youth have addictions problem of one sort or another. Sometimes, we know and pretend that the problem is not there. We may be acting out of fear of being hurt by the addict teenager or feel embarrassed to let our friends and/or neighbors know that our teenager has an addiction problem. An intervention is a formal gathering of friends and family members with the objective of convincing a loved one that he or she has a problem (usually addiction related) and needs to enter treatment for that problem. But there has to be a way. We may have to face the problem one way or the other head-on at some point. This then involves the process of “intervention”. Interventions involve each participant reading a letter about how much they love and care about the addicted individual, but how they personally have been hurt by the addicted individual’s actions. The goal is to establish a compassionate “united front” in order to get the addict to accept the necessity of treatment. Intervening to Save Your Teen One significant difference between adult addicts and teens is that, unless they have committed some legal infraction and been court-ordered to seek treatment, adults cannot be compelled to enter an addiction recovery program. The vast majority of teens, on the other hand, are still in legal custody of their parents or guardians. This means that they can be placed into a program against their will. But as every parent knows, the difference between “can” and “should” can be massive. Though circumstances may necessitate that you force your teen into treatment, a better alternative is to get him or her to accept the need for help and enter treatment voluntarily. This may be accomplished via a family discussion or in the presence of a counselor or other professional. As with a more formal intervention, convincing your teen to accept the reality that he or she needs treatment can be a difficult, emotional process – but the effort can literally save your child’s life. Doing Your Homework Before you can effectively talk to your teen about drug treatment, you first need to educate yourself about teen substance abuse, addiction and treatment options. Consulting with your family physician, your child’s guidance counselor or a local addiction recovery organization is a great first step. Once you have a firm grasp on what your child has been doing – and what treatment options exist – you are prepared to make an informed decision about how to get your child the help he or she needs. Teen drug rehab opportunities can range from outpatient therapy through an ex-

tended stay in a residential program. As with all decisions related to your child’s healthcare, the goal isn’t just to identify the “best” program, but to find the program that best meets your teen’s specific needs. Talking to Your Teen about Drug Rehab Once you and your spouse or partner have identified the best place for your teen, it’s time to intervene. Depending upon the nature of your relationship with your child, this conversation may or may not involve a trained professional such as a therapist, counselor or board registered interventionist. As is the case with an adult intervention, the goal of this conversation with your teen should be to establish the following three points: 1. You love and care about your teen. 2. Your teen’s substance abuse and/or addiction are damaging the entire family. 3. Treatment is necessary – right now. Prior to intervening with your teen, you should have made the necessary arrangements to have him or her admitted into the drug rehab program immediately after this conversation. When The Teen Resists Treatment Hopefully you will be able to persuade your teen to accept both the necessity and inevitability of treatment – but if your every effort is met with resistance, then you may have to resort to more drastic measures. In many cases, parents of recalcitrant teens call the police when the teen misbehaves. There are also specialized organizations that are experts in convincing young people who are resistant to the idea of treatment. If you believe that this may be the best option for your family, you should discuss this with the program you have selected prior to conducting the intervention. Many teen drug programs will accept young people who have not consented to treatment, while others require that the child enter of his or her own free will. Regardless of what decisions you make regarding your teen’s drug rehab experience, the following principles are important to keep in mind: 1. Educate yourself about both the problem and the range of treatment options 2. with

Present a united front your spouse or partner

3. Give your child the opportunity to accept the necessity of treatment 4. Emphasize that the decisions you are making are being made out of love, compassion and a genuine concern for your child’s future 5. Consult or contract with professionals at any stage of the process where you feel that outside assistance will be beneficial to you, your child or your entire family.

Lifestyle

By: David Yaw Twum-Barima, MD, MSc, FRCPC

This column is devoted to answering your questions on health and discusions of diseases which are common among the African Canadians.

Dietary supplements: Do you need them? Understand your specific health needs and how a dietary supplement might benefit your health. Do you need to take dietary supplements? The answer depends on your eating and lifestyle habits and some factors beyond your control, such as your age. If you are eating three healthy meals a day, then you probably do not need to take vitamins. But dietary supplements may be appropriate in some circumstances under certain circumstances. Here are some instances in which you may benefit from taking extra supplements. You may need supplements if: * You don’t eat well. If you eat less than five total servings of fruits and vegetables daily, it may be difficult to get all of the vitamins and minerals your body needs. Also, if you eat only one or two times a day, you may be limiting the number and variety of servings you eat from the various food groups.

* You’re a vegetarian. If you’re a vegetarian, you may not consume enough calcium, iron, zinc and vitamins B-12 and D. You can get these nutrients naturally from nonmeat sources, such as fortified soy products, green leafy vegetables, legumes, whole-grain products and nuts. If you aren’t able to regularly consume these foods, dietary supplements may be necessary. * You consume less than 1,200 calories a day. Low-calorie diets limit the types and amounts of foods you eat and, in turn, the types and

amounts of nutrients you receive. Unless monitored by a doctor, a low-calorie diet isn’t usually recommended. * You have a medical condition that affects how your body absorbs, uses or excretes nutrients. If your diet has limited variety because of food allergies or intolerance to certain foods, such as dairy products, you may benefit from a dietary supplement. Also, if you have a disease of your liver, gallbladder, intestines or pancreas, or if you’ve had surgery on your digestive tract, you may not be able to digest and absorb nutrients properly. In such cases, your doctor may recommend that you take dietary supplements. * You’re a postmenopausal woman. After menopause, women experience a sudden drop in estrogen levels, which increases bone loss. To keep bones strong and to decrease bone loss,

Workplace Bullying is equally harmful and dangerous cont'd from pg. 44 intended to provide constructive feedback are not usually considered bullying, but rather are intended to assist the employee with their work. If you are not sure an action or statement could be considered bullying, you can use the “reasonable person” test. Would most people consider the action unacceptable? People who are the targets of bullying may experience a range of effects. These reactions include: shock, anger, feelings of frustration and/or helplessness, increased sense of vulnerability, loss of confidence, physical symptoms such as inability to sleep, loss of appetite, psychosomatic symptoms such as stomach pains, headaches, panic or anxiety, especially about going to work, family tension and stress, inability to concentrate, and, low morale and productivity. How can bullying affects

the work place? Bullying affects the overall “health” of an organization. An “unhealthy” workplace can have many effects. In general these include: increased absenteeism, increased turnover, increased stress, increased costs for employee assistance programs (EAPs), recruitment, etc., increased risk for accidents / incidents, decreased productivity and motivation, decreased morale, reduced corporate image and customer confidence, and, poorer customer service. There are some general tips that employers can put in place or enforce for their employees to make their working environment habitable. Do encourage everyone at the workplace to act towards others in a respectful and professional manner. Employers themselves should not discriminate or display any preferential treatment towards

you need calcium as well as vitamin D — the vitamin essential for absorbing calcium. Women who don’t obtain enough calcium and vitamin D through foods could benefit from taking a calcium supplement with vitamin D. * You’re a woman who has heavy menstrual bleeding. If you have heavy menstrual bleeding, you may need additional iron to replace the iron depleted by blood loss. Iron deficiency can lead to anemia, a condition in which blood is low in hemoglobin, the substance which carries oxygen to tissues. * You’re pregnant or trying to become pregnant. During this time, you need more of certain nutrients, especially calcium, folate and iron. Folate is needed very early in pregnancy to help protect your baby against neural tube birth defects, such as incomplete closure of the spine (spina bifida). Iron helps

prevent fatigue by helping you make the red blood cells necessary to deliver oxygen to you and your baby. Your doctor can recommend a dietary supplement. It’s important to start taking a supplement before becoming pregnant. * You smoke. Tobacco decreases the absorption of many vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, folate, magnesium and calcium. But dietary supplements won’t make up for the major health risks caused by smoking. The safest option is to avoid all tobacco products. * You drink excessively. Long-term excessive alcohol consumption can impair the digestion and absorption of several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B-1, iron, zinc, magnesium and folate. In addition, you may substitute alcohol for food, resulting in a diet lacking in essential nutrients. Excessive drinking is defined

as more than two drinks a day for men under age 65 and more than one drink a day for men over 65 and women. Taking dietary supplements, however, won’t make up for the major health risks caused by excessive alcohol consumption. If you’re generally healthy and eat a wide variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and lean meats, you don’t likely need dietary supplements. But if you seek assurance that you’re getting all the vitamins and minerals you need and you don’t mind the added expense and daily routine of taking a pill, taking a standard vitamin and mineral supplement with about 100 percent of the Daily Value (DV) for the various vitamins and minerals is generally fine. It’s always a good idea, however, to talk with your doctor, as he or she knows your history and specific situation best.

Attitude and Successful Outcomes cont'd from pg. 29

some employees. Have a workplace policy in place that includes a reporting system. Educate everyone that bullying in any form is a serious matter. Try to work out solutions before the situation gets serious or gets out of control. Educate everyone about what is considered bullying, and whom they can go to for help by providing resources. Treat all complaints seriously, and deal with complaints promptly and confidentially. Train supervisors and managers in how to deal with complaints and potential situations. Encourage them to address situations promptly whether or not a formal complaint has been filed. Have an impartial third party help with the resolution, if necessary. Do not ignore any potential problems. And most importantly, do not delay resolution. Act as soon as possible to stop bullying in the work place.

ning to an opportunity not from a problem. Because we spend so much of our life on the job, a good attitude is essential to our financial success and happiness. Positive attitudes spill over the work plan and into our personal lives as well. Just a positive attitude is enough to get a raise or promotion at work. A worker flipping burgers at McDonald’s might get a promotion or raise if the job was performed with a big smile during the entire shift. This body language informs Management of the following “I enjoy my job, I am happy to be here, this job is not beneath me, I have to be promoted, I get along with co-workers, I get along with management, I love serving the customers, I want to

be part of the management team, I am grateful to be here, etc.” In this example substantial information have been provided to management based on attitude alone. Your unique determination of financial success may be a long journey from where you are to where you want to go. Always remember that success is not just a destination, it is also the

quality of our journey. Call it optimism; call it the power of positive thinking, ATTITUDE or whatever. In the final analysis, those who have it, not only tend to be more successful, they also enjoy the journey along the path. Lastly, Zig Ziglar indicated in his famous quote, “It is your ATTITUDE, not your APTITUDE that determines your ALTITUDE.

BP faces temporary ban from new US contracts BP has been temporarily suspended from new contracts with the US government, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said. While it is unclear how long the ban will last, it follows BP’s record fine earlier this month over the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The EPA said it was taking action due to BP’s “lack of business integrity” over its handling of the blowout. BP has pleaded guilty to 14 criminal charges over the accident. “The BP suspension will

temporarily prevent the company and the named affiliates from getting new federal government contracts, grants or other covered transactions until the company can provide sufficient evidence to EPA demonstrating that it meets federal business standards,” said the EPA in a statement. “Suspensions are a standard practice when a responsibility question is raised by action in a criminal case.” ‘Resolve and lift’ ban The EPA and BP both said that the temporary ban would not affect

existing agreements BP has with the government. The oil giant added that the suspension may in fact be lifted quite soon. “The EPA has informed BP that it is preparing a proposed administrative agreement that, if agreed upon, would effectively resolve and lift this temporary suspension,” BP said. “Over the past five years, BP has invested more than $52bn in the United States - more than any other oil and gas company, and more than it invests in any other country where it operates. On top of this business investment, BP has to date spent more than $14bn in operational response and clean-up costs.” Since the Deepwater Horizon accident, the US has granted BP more than 50 new leases in the Gulf of Mexico, where the company has been drilling safely since the government moratorium was lifted. For now, BP is to be excluded from the lease of new exploration fields in the Gulf of Mexico, some 20m acres that was auctioned on Wednesday. The BBC has confirmed that the Department of the Interior will not award BP any new leases - including for Wednesday’s sale - for which it is the highest bidder until the EPA suspension from new federal contracts is resolved. BP’s finance director Brian Gilvary told investors earlier this month that the group would have to rethink its entire US strategy were a blanket ban put in place. The US is vital for BP, accounting for more than 20% of its global daily production. It has ploughed more than $52bn (£32bn) into US energy development projects since 2007, more than any other country BP invests in.

Animal welfare: Germany moves to ban bestiality Germany’s ruling coalition is calling for a ban on bestiality - or the practice of having sex with animals. The German parliament’s agriculture committee is considering making it an offence not only to hurt an animal but also to force it into unnatural sex. Offenders could face a hefty fine. A final vote will be held in the Bundestag (lower house) on 14 December. Germany legalised bestiality (zoophilia) in 1969, except when the animal suffered “significant harm”. But animal rights groups have campaigned for a change in the law and Hans-Michael Goldmann, the head of the parliamentary committee investigating the new amendment, told the Tageszeitung newspaper that the new legislation was intended to clarify the current legal position. “With this explicit ban, it will be easier to impose

penalties and to improve animal protection.” A fine of up to 25,000 euros (£20,000) is proposed if someone forces an animal to commit “actions alien to the species”. But Michael Kiok, the chairman of the pressure group Zoophile Engagement for Tolerance and Information (Zeta), said he was going to take legal action to fight the proposed changes. “It is unthinkable that any sexual act with an animal is punished without proof that the animal has come to any harm,” he said, adding that animals are capable of showing what they do, or do not, want to do.

“We see animals as partners and not as a means of gratification. We don’t force them to do anything. Animals are much easier to understand than women,” Mr Kiok claimed. Bestiality is banned in many European countries, including the Netherlands, France and Switzerland. The law was changed in the UK in 2003, which reduced the maximum sentence from life imprisonment to two years. The act however, is permissible in Belgium, Denmark and Sweden, though Stockholm is considering a change in the legislation. BBC News

I spent a weekend following Billy Grant and the Voices of the Liberated, and you will know they put God first - in everything they do. From the successful release of their new album Hope, to their weekly praise and worship service at Living Word Assembly of God, the group feels there is no achievement that is unworthy of thanks. However the road to success has not come without its challenges. According to Billy, getting all the necessary people who make up his team had its difficulties. From the band members of Judah Revival to the dancers, choir members, lighting technicians, media team and church leaders, Hope is a project made up from the sums of many parts. And on November 10th 2012, the date of the official CD launchand concert, watching them all come together was simply brilliant. You could literally feel the excitement in the air thicken as the lights flashed and the musicians played the chords of their opening song He Has Risen. When asked how his music differed from

JOY Fellowship Group

Project Hope Recap other gospel artists, Billy simply replied, “because it’s simple and made solely to service Christ. These are songs everyone can sing, children and old people. There is no hope in humans but only in God and my music is made only to bring people to God.” He continued to say his success was only given to him from God as he quoted the Bible Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” to prove his point.

Manitoba throws Welcome Mat to New Comers to Canada From: Staff Reporter, Winnipeg

KeyNote Speaker Jean Augustine, PC.

The Province of Manitoba is one of the most welcoming places for new immigrants to settle in Canada, the Province’s Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism, has declared. Speaking at the opening session of the 5th International Confer-

ence on Immigration and Settlement dubbed “Strangers in New Homelands” at the University of Manitoba on November 1st, 2012, Hon. Christine Melnick emphasized that the Province of Manitoba, through its innovative immigration policies and approaches has attracted thousands of immigrants to the Province since 2006. Nearly 16,000 immigrants arrived and settled in the Province in 2011 alone. She said her government strongly believes that immigration is the cornerstone for growth and the Province is providing the necessary assis-

Canada recalls diplomats over Palestinian vote Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird is temporarily recalling senior diplomats from Israel, the West Bank and the UN missions in New York and Geneva. He says he wants to get their views on the implications of the UN General Assembly vote which recognized the Palestinians as a non-member observer state at the world body. “Canada is deeply disappointed but not surprised by yesterday’s result at the United Nations General Assembly,” he said in a statement Friday. “Our government’s position is clear: the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace is

through negotiations, not unilateral actions.” “To that end, Canada is bringing its heads of missions in Israel and Ramallah and its permanent representatives to the UN in New York and Geneva back to Ottawa temporarily to assess the implications of yesterday’s UN General Assembly vote and inform Canada’s response to it.” In a televised interview with the CBC, Baird said he wants to talk to the diplomats who are closest to the situation. “I want to get a sense of where we go from here,” he said. The minister said in his statement that Canada

will review its whole relationship with the Palestinian Authority. He added he is deeply disappointed by the UN vote, and that the only way to peace in the Middle East is through negotiations, not what he called “unilateral actions.” The General Assembly decision is an “impediment to peace,” Baird said. Canada was among a tiny minority of countries opposing the resolution as the Palestinians easily won recognition Thursday. The resolution to upgrade their status was approved by a vote of 1389, with 41 abstentions. The Canadian Press

fit is taking to assist with the thorny issue of recognition and accreditation of foreign credentials of immigrants to the Province of Ontario. She pointed out that the Office of the Fairness Commissioner is working and collaborating with the professional bodies and government departments to design fairer and transparent measures for recognizing and accrediting the credentials of new immigrants to ease their integration

into the labour market. In welcoming participants and presenters to the conference, the Chairperson for the Conference, Dr. Michael Baffoe underscored the importance of these annual conferences and their deliberations in examining critical issues on immigrant and refugee movements, settlement and integration in new societies. The two-day conference on November 1st and 2nd was the 5th in its series that began in 2008 and hosted by

the Faculty of Social Work, University of Manitoba. The Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Harvy Frankel, in his welcome remarks also underscored the importance of the conference to the Mission and work of the Faculty as it conducts research and trains professionals to work with new comers in Canada and beyond. Conference presenters and participants came from all over the world including Africa, Europe, Asia and the United States.

Man sues after losing leg in church crucifix mishap The case of a U.S. man whose leg had to be amputated after a 600-pound (270-kilogram) crucifix fell on him will go t o t r i a l i n J a n u a r y. Attorney Kevin Kitson says his client, David Jimenez, prayed to the crucifix outside St. Patrick’s Church in New York state after his wife was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. When she recovered, he showed his thanks by volunteering

to clean the cross. In May 2010, the crucifix fell on him, crushing his right leg. It was later amputated.

He’s suing the church for $3 million. The church says it’s not liable for the accident. The Associated Press

Ghana winger Christian Atsu has been shockingly left out of the three-man shortlist for the 2012 Golden Boy Award. Ghana winger Christian Atsu has been shockingly left out of the threeman shortlist for the 2012

Golden Boy Award. The award is handed out to the most impressive U-21 player in Europe. This year’s award will be

contested by Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, Malaga midfielder Isco and AC Milan forward Stephan El Shaarawy.

Atsu was snubbed for the accolade despite impressing for Rio Ave and FC Porto in the calendar year. The 20-year-old’s rise has

received worldwide recognition and his star arguably much brighter than Courtois and Isco in particular. Atsu emerged the

best player during his loan stint at Rio Ave. He has been re-installed into the Porto first team since his return to the Dragao at the beginning of the season. His superb ball control and mesmerizing skills has been likened to Argentine great Lionel Messi and is being courted by several big European teams. Atsu’s improved performance has seen him snatch a regular place in the Ghana national team and is one of the sure bets to make the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations squad of the Black Stars. Despite these achievements in the year under review, the Ghana international was overlooked for the prestigious award. His omission is likely to draw a lot of criticisms from football fans all around the world especially Ghanaians. The winner of this year’s award is expected to be announced a week before Christmas on a yet to be determined date Ghana FA Media.

Let's Think Family - By Rev. Dr. Samuel Kisseadoo CHRISTMAS MESSAGE OF DECEMBER 2012 By Rev. Dr. Samuel Kisseadoo Mary & Joseph were rejected by the hotel in town (Bethlehem). They ended up in an animal house that most people find filthy & stinking. But God ensured that Shepherds, who were used to animal filth & repulsive odor, came along to worship their baby Jesus. The Lesson? -- People may unreasonably & painfully reject you, but so far as you have good motives, do what is right, & humbly live in obedience, God will ensure that He finally grants you His favor, & brings people around you who will love & appreciate you. So, cheer up and keep on keeping on in faith. During Christmas & Easter, I always try to dig out or one or two nuggets of gold out of the recorded Biblical accounts in order to bring out important lessons for life, in addition to what are commonly narrated. I wish to focus on four of them: A) JOSEPH (earthly father of Jesus) --- “Joseph the husband of Mary, being a just (righteous) man, and not wanting to make Mary a public example (disgrace), was minded (considered) to put Mary away secretly. But while he thoughts about these things, behold, and Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit” (Math. 1:19, 20). LESSONS: 1) One primary sign (character) of a genuinely loving & righteous husband (or fiancée) is one that would never want to disgrace the wife or fiancee in public, no matter her offences. A good man considers the welfare and interests of his female partner, and does not just pursue his own selfish agenda in the marriage or relationship. He patiently thinks through problems and unexpected challenges, and seeks to wait upon the Lord for God’s power, godly ideas, and wisdom that will enable him to deal lovingly and effectively with the issues without causing damage and bitter consequences. 2) There is what some of us call “pillow-talk” in communication and conflict resolution. It facilitates your efforts to hit home a very vital point into someone’s mind and heart. Since men in particular are wired by God to be creatures of the mind, and are focused on being achievers, one should watch every man and put across (or discuss) a very important point when the mind is least busy. Men therefore take in quite more when their heads are resting on a pillow away from the active pursuit of achievements. Even God Almighty waited to give Joseph “pillow-talk” at night when he was away from the busy schedules of the synagogue, farming, social duties, distressed with finding a solution to mysterious pregnancy reported by his trusted lady etc. Women can always control their emotions and

words, wait patiently, pray enough about issues, and give their men “pillowtalk” to minimize the tension in homes and marriages, and prevent many separations and divorces. B) MARY (mother of Jesus) ---When the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary, he made 3 very important statements, with exclamation (excitement) at the end: “Rejoice (hail), highly favored one (GOD’S FAVOR; GOD’S APPROVAL), the Lord is with you (GOD’S PRESENCE); blessed are you among women! (GOD’S BLESSINGS)” (Luke 1:28). LESSON: In my opinion, these 3 qualities must be in the life of every woman before she marries (if she understands that she will become pregnant and be a channel for God to bring other human beings into the world for God’s divine purposes). Every single lady must work towards these as her primary goals in life, and seek to get more of God’s favor, God’s Presence, and God’s blessings in her marriage and entire life. The absence of these 3 important qualities constitutes a major cause of many failed relationships, marriages, and families in today’s carnal societies. These are among the fundamental reasons why many churches and ministries are weak because of weak foundations that are gradually built from the fragile bricks of weak homes. The man, who is going to marry the woman, or her husband, must have these qualities first in his life, and be spiritually sound enough to patiently, humbly, diligently, and wisely help the lady to maintain the foundation and grow in these qualities. What makes you think (or believe) that God will excuse you; that you can live anyhow and get up to marry as a woman mainly according to your personal desires; or as a man, you can choose a woman to marry, without ensuring that the woman has lived a wise and holy life in obedience to the Lord, and therefore has a purpose in life, and has prepared herself for marriage and family life in a way that has caused God’s favor (approval), God’s Presence, and God’s blessings to be upon her? Many of us jump the first two steps and try to grab God’s blessings, without starting from the beginning by using scripture, prayer, humility, and obedience to seek for God’s grace and favor, and God’s Holy Presence in our daily lives. C) WHY WAS JESUS BORN ---- Everyone is

born in order to live and enjoy life, as long as possible. Every human being will move heaven and earth to stay alive with good food, proper hygiene, peace of mind and heart, exercise, precautions in daily activities, and medical attention. But Jesus was the only one who was born in order to die. His birth was filled with preparation for His ultimate death for us. Jesus was born in very strange and humble circumstances (which might even be referred to as unfortunate circumstances) but during His ministry, especially when he faced opposition and trials, He never made even one reference to the manger or stable where He was born, or the difficulty His parents faced when His mother Mary was going into labor etc., in self pity, defense, or to get attention. At the end of His life, when Jesus stood trial before Pontius Pilate, He made specific reference to His birth, and gave us the TWO MAJOR REASONS why He was born. Pilate asked Him two very important questions: “Are You the King of the Jews?” and “What have you done?” (St. John 18:33, 35). He asked Jesus WHO HE SPECIFICALLY WAS, and WHAT HE HAD DONE WITH WHAT HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE. Jesus emphasized the following points in his answers: “My Kingdom is not of this world. You say rightly that I AM A KING. For this cause I was BORN, and for this cause I HAVE COME INTO THE WORLD that I should BEAR WITNESS TO THE TRUTH.” I conclude then, that Jesus was born to establish God’s Kingdom on earth by ruling in the souls and spirits of humans, for Him to become King over that Kingdom which will be an extension of God’s original Kingdom in Heaven, and do so with God’s truth (God’s word and God’s will). LESSONS: 1) Instead of focusing on what you can do with your life and the opportunities available to you now, do you rather waste your time blaming everything on your past unfortunate circumstances and lost opportunities, and blame other people for your failures and trials who “denied you a room in the hotel” just as the Inn Keeper did to the Joseph and Mary (parents of Jesus)? 2) Is Jesus really ruling as King in your life, for you to be part of God’s Kingdom? Do you faithfully live for the Lord, and consult your King in prayer for decisions and choices, power for daily living, and the proper use of resources? 3) Are you living by the truth according to God’s word and God’s will, in order to help expand God’s Kingdom? Are people being attracted to Christ because of your life? 4) Who really are you, in public and in private life? Have you identified all of your gifts and talents? Are you working diligently with scripture, prayer, and acts of obedience on your private life and inner character? ‘Char-

acter’ is who you are when no one is watching you.” 5) What have you done so far in this life with what you have received, and what you have been all along? As we celebrate Christmas and enter the New Year, let us sit, ponder, and find out who we sincerely are, and if we are living by God’s truth that wins other people to be part of the Kingdom of God, in the light of God’s Presence (as we meditate on scripture and pray). Then let us clearly analyze to find out if we have been maximizing the use of all of our qualities and what we are exposed to (talents, abilities, gifts, opportunities, status, promotions etc. ---- including your education, job or career, position of authority or responsibility, money, your sexuality, singleness, marriage, children, in-laws, family members, friends, church or ministry, property, investments etc.). Jesus later emphasized that if we diligently “SEEK FIRST the Kingdom of God and its righteousness, ALL THESE THINGS (all other things that we need) will be added unto us” (Mathew 6:33). D) THE SHEPHERDS --- They were among the most disrespected people in those days because of: 1) The job that they did was considered as dirty and demeaning (cleaning feces of animals, getting themselves dirty in the field etc.). 2) Absence from the temple most of the time, and therefore less participation in the ceremonial rituals etc., due to the extensive fieldwork with animals, in a society that placed high premium on religious and ceremonial duties. 3) They were not intellectual. 4) The held no positions of authority in the society. 5) They were not among the rich in the society, and usually served other rich people by looking after their sheep. But these unrespected shepherds were the people God chose to appear first, and they were the first to hurry and go to see Jesus (Luke 2:15, 16). God ensured that Shepherds who are used to the scent around animals came to the animal house to sincerely admire and worship Jesus. The Wise Men (Magi) came later to see Jesus as rich men with their special gifts. LESSON: 1) Do not allow your position in society to discourage or prevent you from getting up to exercise faith and tap into God’s power for change, progress, and success, no matter how low you are or how bad you feel about your circumstance. 2) Let us hurry (Just as the shepherds did) and go to Jesus when God has clearly spoken to us about an issue. How many things did you delay in praying about and taking action in 2011, and in the past, when it is very clear that God had used several means to speak to you about the situation? 3) It doesn’t matter how unappreciated, ashamed, despised, denied, and disgraced you may feel in your present situation. So far as you live in God’s will, He will ensure that the right people come your way to ap-

preciate and encourage you, just as God made the shepherds come to appreciate and worship Jesus. 4) Come to Jesus as a ‘Shepherd’ first, before you come to Him as a ‘Wise Man’. It is interesting that the two greatest names in the Old Testament, Abraham and Moses, were all shepherds. And, Jesus is called the Good Shepherd, and we as sheep. Sheep need a leader to guide, feed, and tend them, and are led by the voice of the shepherd, but not by sight. They are very familiar with the voice of their particular shepherd. Jesus said “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (St. John 10:27). It was during the time when Moses was busily doing his job as Shepherd that he heard God in the burning bush, and acted accordingly. If you come to Jesus behaving as if you have everything, you will go away with nothing; but if you come to Him with nothing, you will go away with everything. Let us have the best attitude of humility, total dependence, true faith, and right motives as we come to the Lord and seek to know what to say and do, as well as what not to say and what not to do in the coming year, in a world that seems to be increasingly more chaotic than ever. As the storms on the sea of your life threaten to deflate and devastate you, know that if you invite Jesus to go along with you, He has the ability and willingness to travel with you on those rough waters and act on your behalf: “Peace, be still! And the wind (trying to blow you away and ruin

your blessings in addition) ceased and there was great calm” (Mark 4:39). Claim this promise for yourself throughout the coming year when any storm erupts, as you live in faith and obedience. Engage in preventive prayers that will stop some storms from arising, and fortify you against any necessary storms that God, in His wisdom, will allow to come into your life for His purpose and His ultimate glory. MERRY CHRISTMAS, AND A HAPPY PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR! May the Lord lavish on you the best of His rich blessings in 2013 and thereafter. Living Word Assembly of God Church Annual Women’s Day cont'd from pg. 50

Annual Women’s Day. The theme for the event was “Peculiar People” and the key speaker was Rev. Mrs. Grace Boakye-Agyemang of Grace Baptist Church in Montreal, Quebec. It was a 3 day event The events began on Friday evening with a praise and testimonies service and continued on Saturday morning with a breakfast meeting with Ms. Bernice Adjei a women’s health expert. At the meeting she discussed the effects of menopause in both men and women. An issue not commonly discussed in the Ghanaian community.

The final event was a special service on Sunday, November 18 with a sermon from Mrs. Grace Boakye-Agyeman her key verse taken from 1 Peter 2:9, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”Members of Joy Fellowship an auxiliary group of the Women Ministry performed a skit as part of the celebration. Hopefully the group will continue to celebrate more anniversaries in the years to come.

BP faces temporary ban from new US contracts cont'd from pg. 47

Pentagon contracts The UK company was the biggest fuel supplier to the US Department of Defense, which awarded it contracts valued at about $1.35bn in 2011. BP’s contracts with the US military jumped 33% over a year in 2011, according to data from Bloomberg. The group was awarded a fuel contract in May from the Pentagon while

it faced mounting legal costs over the disaster. The Deepwater Horizon accident, in which an oil rig exploded killing 11 people, caused one of the worst oil spills in history. The EPA is the lead agency for suspension and debarment matters regarding BP and has the authority to disbar individuals and companies under sections of the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. FOOD FOR LIFE

Bringing the Gospel to our Community By: Rev. Joseph Osei-Amoah THE TRUE IDENTITY OF JESUS OF NAZARETH! “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. 5 For to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again: “I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son”? 6 But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all the angels of God worship Him.” 7 And of the angels He says: “Who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire.” But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions.” 10 And: “You, LORD, in the

beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. 11 They will perish, but You remain; and they will all grow old like a garment; 12 Like a cloak You will fold them up, and they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will not fail.” 13 But to which of the angels has He ever said: “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool”? (Hebrews 1:1-13 NKJV) The purpose of my article for March 2012 was to answer the question: “Is Jesus of Nazareth the Messiah mentioned in the Old Testament?” This article for November 2012 is to go further to emphasize the true nature of the Lord Jesus as the Divine Son of God as stated in the word of God. The writer of the letter to the Hebrew Christians, sought to encourage the Jewish Christians who were going through severe persecution for their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ not to give up because Christ was superior to the Judaic religious system. The writer compared the various aspects of the Old Testament worship with the true identity of Christ and the offices he assumed during his earthly ministry. He explained how animal sacrifice under Judaism could only cover up the sin of the guilty but could not take away the sin and must

be repeated. However, Christ offered Himself once and that was enough to pacify the Father for the sins of every human being who would trust in His sacrifice at Calvary-“And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission... And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation ((Hebrews 9:22, 27, 28). “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.” (Hebrews 10:4 NKJV) Beginning from the first chapter of Hebrews, we read: “God who at various times and in various ways spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His

Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.” (Hebrews 1:1-4 NKJV) In the above scriptures we learn that Christ, the Son of God, the heir of all things, is more important than the prophets, for through Him God created the worlds. This Son of God is the true representation of the invisible God (Read John 1:18). He sustains all creation by the word of His power. In Hebrews 1:4-5, the Lord Jesus is declared much better than the angels and occupies unique position as “the Son of God”. To avoid any doubt from the minds of the angels because human beings are “a little lower” than the angels since He was sending His Son into the world in the form of human to be the perfect sacrificial Lamb (Hebrews, 2:9), God the Father commanded all angels to worship Him (Hebrews 1:6). Addressing His Son in Hebrews 1:8-9, the Father called Him “God”,

“But to the Son he says: Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with oil of gladness more than your companions.” The writer of Hebrews quoted Psalm 45:6-7. As the divine Son of God, Jesus was aware that He was God, therefore, in His prayer in John 17, He said, “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.” (John 17:4-5) God revealed Himself to Moses in Exodus as the “I AM” (Exodus 3:14). In John 8:56 59 the Lord Jesus told the Jew who were arguing with Him about His identity, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad. “Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” Then they took up stones to throw at Him; ...” God had declared in the first commandment that He would not share His glory with anyone, therefore, even

angels would not accept worship—Rev. 19:10 and Rev. 22:9 but on many occasions the Lord Jesus accepted worship-(Matthew 8:2; 15:25; 28:17; Luke 24:50-52 and Acts 10:25). Several other scriptures supported His deity. Finally, Saul of Tarsus later known as the Apostle Paul, who strongly opposed the ministry of the Lord Jesus after the conversion wrote the following about the Lord Jesus in Philippians 2:5-11, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” At this Christmas, let us come and worship the divine Son of God who died to bring us back to God our Father!

Around the Ghana Sports Scene Argos defeat Stamps 35-22 to capture 100th Grey Cup Argos win 100th Grey Cup A rugged defence staggered the Calgary Stampeders before Ricky Ray delivered the knockout punch and earned the Toronto Argonauts a historic Grey Cup victory Sunday. Toronto’s defence, under the guidance of former Calgary assistant Chris Jones, held CFL rushing leader Jon Cornish to 57 yards while pressuring quarterback Kevin Glenn before Ray’s seven-yard TD pass to Andre Durie late in the game cemented the Argonauts’ 35-22 win in the 100th edition of the CFL championship. Toronto running back Chad Kackert, with 133 yards rushing, was the game MVP while defensive end Ricky Foley claimed top Canadian honours. Ray, obtained last December in a blockbuster trade with Edmonton, finished 18-of-30 passing for 231 yards and two TDs. The Argos dominated a potent Calgary offence that scored 51 TDs this season -- tied with Montreal for the league lead -- holding it to just four field goals before Maurice Price’s TD catch and twopoint conversion with 20 seconds remaining. Defensive back Pacino Horne brought the rabid Rogers Centre sellout crowd of 53,208 to its feet in the opening half. His key 25-yard TD interception return staked Toronto to a dominant 18-point halftime advantage. Calgary came in as the CFL’s hottest team with 13 wins in 15 games after opening the season 3-4. Glenn guided the club to nine wins in 14 starts after incumbent Drew Tate injured his shoulder, then replaced the injured Tate (forearm) to lead the Stampeders past the defending Grey Cup-champion B.C. Lions in last weekend’s West final. Calgary also boasted the CFL’s top rusher in Cornish, the league’s top Canadian after running for 1,457 yards this season. But Glenn and Co. had no answer for Toronto’s swarming defence as the Argos ended their season with a fifth straight victory. Earlier this year, the CFL fined the Argos $5,000 for tampering after hiring Jones, ruling they didn’t ask Calgary for permission to speak with the veteran defensive co-ordinator. “We didn’t start well. We didn’t take advantage of their turnover and they got two touchdowns on theirs,” Stampeders coach John

Hufnagel said. “But the bottom line was that we didn’t get the ball into the end zone until the game was out of reach.” Many of the enthusiastic fans at the Rogers Centre were on their feet as members of the RCMP marched the Grey Cup to centre field while country star Johnny Reid -- a former kicker at Bishop’s University -- opened the pre-game show with cheerleaders representing all eight CFL teams also on the turf. And it became obvious early who the crowd’s team of choice was as Calgary players received polite applause during the pre-game introductions before Rogers Centre exploded with loud chants of “Argos” when it was time for the Toronto offence to come on to the field. Not surprisingly, the loudest cheers were for receiver Chad Owens -- the CFL’s outstanding player -- and Ray, the club’s offensive catalysts in 2012. The crowd, which included fans in the colours of all eight CFL teams, then joined Burton Cummings in singing “O Canada.” After pop stars Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen headlined the halftime show, Calgary took possession to open the third, looking to respond after being thoroughly dominated. The Stampeders did respond with an 81-yard, nineplay drive but only mustered a field goal to cut Toronto’s lead to 24-9. Owens returned the kickoff 43 yards to the Toronto 53 before being tackled by kicker Rene Paredes, who got up, threw his helmet down and began yelling at his teammates. The Argos then got lucky twice. The first break came when Toronto kicker Swayze Waters plunked a 15-yard field goal off the upright, but got a second shot from 20 yards out thanks to a procedure call, which he made to put the Argos ahead 279. But the killer for Calgary came on the kickoff when Larry Taylor’s 105-yard TD return was negated by a holding call. Owens and Dontrelle Inman had Toronto’s other touchdowns. Waters added the converts and two field goals while Noel Prefontaine added a single. Calgary’s other points came on a safety in finishing a dismal 0-3 versus Toronto this season. A suffocating Argos defence forced three turno-

vers and set up two TDs, earning Toronto a dominant 24-6 halftime lead. The Argos recovered a fumble, picked Glenn off and stopped rookie backup Matt Walter on a third-down gamble. Toronto’s defence stacked the box against Cornish, holding him to 37 yards rushing on nine attempts, but 26 came on two carries late in the half. Calgary managed just five first downs as Glenn, forced to deal with excessive crowd noise on every snap, was just 5-of-11 passing for 141 yards -- 61 coming on a completion to Nik Lewis. Ray was a tidy 13-of-20 passing for 177 yards and a TD but completed 10-of-11 attempts for 130 yards on second downs as Toronto held the ball for over 17 minutes. What’s more, the CFL’s most penalized team this year took none in the opening half. Foley’s recovery of a Cornish fumble gave Toronto possession at the Calgary 44 and led to Ray’s five-yard TD strike to Owens to cap a six-play, 44-yard drive at 8:03, thrilling the Rogers Centre sellout. Horne recorded the biggest play of the half, going low to pick off then getting up and returning it for the touchdown. Glenn threw inside, seemingly expecting Price to break to his left but the Stampeders receiver went to his right, leaving Horne all alone for the interception. Toronto’s offence started tentatively but Ray tested Calgary’s secondary with a willingness to go deep. After failing to connect, Ray was finally rewarded with a 62-yard reception to a wide-open Jason Barnes that set up Waters’ 16-yard field goal for a 17-3 lead. The Argos’ defence came up huge later in the second with Calgary facing second-and-five from the Toronto four-yard line. Instead of passing, the Stampeders looked to receiver Romby Bryant on an end- around but he was quickly tracked down by linebacker Ejiro Kuale for a seven-yard loss. That forced the West Division champions to settle for the 18-yard field goal. Toronto ended the half emphatically on backup Jarious Jackson’s oneyard TD pass to Inman with 20 seconds remaining. Jackson’s pass came after Toronto struggled on short-yardage run attempts in last weekend’s 27-20 East Division final win in Montreal

Ivory Coast and Manchester City’s Toure won the accolade last year. Caf initially named 34 players who they were considering for the award before cutting that down to 10 names. His Ivorian compatriot Drogba also tasted silverware with an English Premier League club as they won the FA Cup and also their maiden European Champions League title. He scored 17 goals for Newcastle to end last season as the club’s top scorer.
