Nigerian Islamic police destroy 240,000 bottles of beer in Kano KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) - Islamic police in northern Nigeria’s main city of Kano used an earth haulage truck on Thursday to destroy around 240,000 bottles of beer seized from supply vehicles and minority Christian shop owners. Alcohol is banned under sharia (Islamic law) in Kano and several other mostly Muslim northern states, although it is consumed in some areas especially the Sabon Gari district housing mostly

Christian ethnic Igbo traders from the southeast. “We thank God that our command has successfully destroyed about 244,151 bottles of beer of different sorts. We hope (this) will help restore the tarnished image of Kano,” said Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, head of the Hisbah uniformed Islamic squad at the site where the truck crushed the bottles at the city’s edge. The Canadian Senate Expense Scandal: Exposing the Corruption in our Democratic System Over the past several months, and infact stretching back almost a year, there have been rumours about some members of Canada’s second Legislative Chamber, the Senate, having stolen public money and misconducted themselves. The scandals initially involved the trio of Stephen Harper appointed Senators: Pamela Wallin, a former Broadcast Journalist with CBC, Mike Duffy, a former arrogant Journalist reporting for CTV from Parliament and Patrick Brazeau. All of them face accusations of stealing public money: for billing Canadian taxpayers with expenses they were not entitled to. Of the three, the one involving Mike Duffy seems to be the most explosive because it involves Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Office although he has been trying to pretend that he knew nothing about it. But when the news first broke that Mike Duffy had stolen as much as $90,000, the then Chief of Staff of Stepen Harper called Nigel Wright signed a cheque for the 90,000 to Duffy to pay back the money so that it does not embarrass the Prime Minister. If the Prime Minister did not know about this how come his number two officer signed a cheque to pretend to be refunding the money? We are concerned about these scandals among Canada’s Senators and the Prime Minister’s Office for a number of reasons: First Canada, among a number of Western countries, has the nerve to always march to Africa and other so-called Third World countries to lecture them about corruption as if they are saints. Secondly, as citizens and residents of this great country, we all pay taxes and the monies stolen by the Senators with pretensions of innocence by the Prime Minister are our monies too. And we demand full accountability of our public money. And just as they constantly preach anti-corruption to developing countries, we also demand, as Canadian citizens, full probity and accountability from our government officials and politicians. Prime Minister Stephen Harper needs to come out more cleaner than he has done so far. He cannot convince anyone that he knows nothing about all the transactions that went on especially the one involving Mike Duffy. Probity, accountability, and anti-corruption should not be demanded from so-called Third World governments because we give them some pittance called “Aid”. Charity, they say, begins at home and we strongly advise Prime Minister Harper to set the anti-corruption house in Canada in order starting from his own office before he and his government get the nerve to lecture Third World countries about corruption. The RCMP has now charged Mike Duffy and Nigel Wright, the Prime Minister’s former Chief of Staff with fraud and stealing. We will all eagerly await the outcome of this trial.

Opinion/ Commentary Corruption is Serious Threat to Ghana’s Embryonic Democracy By Kwabena Akuoko,Anti-socia Nothing threatens Ghana’s emerging democracy than public sector corruption. It is a cancer that has been eating deep into fabric of our dear nation for far too long. No wonder successive administrations, military or civilian have over the decades supposedly made it a top priority to eliminate such systemic problem. But the so-called fight against corruption has measurably failed because our leaders do not seem to understand the scope of the problem at hand. It appears that they are yet to grasp the inkling that abuse of entrusted power for private gain is simply anti-democratic. Suffice it to say that many politicians engage in dishonest and fraudulent conducts such as bribery for self-serving purposes. To eradicate corruption in a democratic Ghana is then a task that must be accomplished, but sadly, our leaders have not genuinely shown concrete efforts in that direction. Fundamental to sound national and democratic growth are p u b l i c o ffi ci al s an d institutions, which are devoid of corrupt practices. Right now, corruption poses a clear and present threat to the country’s economic and democratic development. Unfortunately however, those very officials, whether elected or career bureaucrats tasked with managing the public purse are the ones who persistently loot national coffers for their selfish ends. Our public officials tend to lose sight of the fact that leaders who exhibit honesty, transparency and accountability and shy away from corruption vitally help to nurture and preserve democracy. The Mahama government and future administrations can certainly learn a lesson from Canada. The recent Canadian Senate corruption incident which led to kicking out three Senators from the Senate provides a perfect case in point of how democratic countries such as Ghana should deal with corruption in to order restore faith in our esteemed open system of government. Arguably, corruption exists even in well-established

democracies. But this does not vindicate Ghanaian politicians and public officials for engaging in corrupt practices to satisfy their selfish interests at the expense of their nation. Our country has for example witnessed high profile corruption cases in recent years. These cases include, but not limited to government’s payment of GH¢ 58 million to one Mr. Alfred Woyome, a businessman a few years ago of which the government is now trying to retrieve the funds from the payee as well as the payment of GH¢2.5 million to New World Securities. Various well-sourced reports indicate that the Ghana government has within the last several years paid GH¢ 600 million in judgment debts to various individuals and institutions. Needless to point out that the country’s past and current political leaders of various political stripes need to be held accountable for these dubious debts and subsequent payments. Indiscriminate payments of these so-called judgment debts sum up the depth of corruption in Ghana and how it threatens our country’s future. L a c k o f transparency and accountability surrounding the use of public funds is a serious threat to Ghana’s economy and democratic potentials. And any injudicious utilization of state resources by those entrusted with power to govern and manage the public treasury cannot be tolerated anymore. U n d e r s t a n d a b l y, g o v e r n m e n t s occasionally pay some form of judgments debts, but Ghana’s frequent payment of huge amounts of money to individuals and entities due to officials’ corrupt conducts are unacceptable. Such practices are no doubt a serious threat t o o u r d e m o c r a c y. They epitomize lack of accountability and also a demonstration of our leaders’ insensitivity to the plight of average Ghanaians, given the many-sided economic challenges we face as a nation. The idea of using of public funds for personal gains have

almost become normal in Ghana and it even seems to be the main preoccupation among seasoned and novice politicians alike. This notion is exemplified by a recent leaked taped attributed to the former Deputy Communications Minister, Ms. Victoria Hammah who was purportedly heard boasting to her friend that she was in politics to make money. Thankfully, Victoria Hammah has been relieved of her ministerial position. Her dismissal is a welcome relief, which will hopefully serve as a warning to like-minded politicians that corrupt practices are unacceptable because they impede d e m o c r a c y. W h i l e I vehemently condemn the dismissed minister’s alleged intention to enrich herself from the public bank account, I agree with the alleged comments attributed to her that corrupt politicians are a reflection of a corrupt society. Our country’s democratic future is at risk because of what seems to be the endemic corrupt behaviours among some of the very people we elect to public office. Politicians of the two main political parties must particularly be blamed for the abysmal lack of effective oversight of public funds. Their lack of sound oversight has now reached what can only be described as epidemic proportions. Instead of entering politics to serve their constituents, it would appear that many politicians have ulterior motives for their call to public service. Corruption has become a huge albatross around the neck, which is standing in the way o f G h a n a ’s f u t u r e democratic growth. We can no longer as a nation to pay lip services to the fight against corruption. Practical steps are needed to deal with the problem. Eradication of corruption or at least bringing it down to the bare minimum level in a democratic Ghana is a task that must be accomplished by all means necessary. We all have a responsibility to act now to prevent corruption from impeding Ghana’s future democratic and economic growth.

Ontario can limit pharmacy-brand drugs, Supreme Court rules Ontario allowed to prohibit Shoppers Drug Mart, Rexall from selling private-label drugs The Supreme Court of Canada has dismissed an appeal by Shoppers Drug Mart and the Katz Group, owner of the Rexall and Pharma lus pharmacy chain, which had argued that the province of Ontario couldn’t stop them from selling their own cheaper versions of popular generic drugs without passing a law to that effect. The question before the court was whether the province could bar the drug store chains from selling their own generic drugs simply by introducing regulations to that effect, which it did in 2010. The court ruled Friday that Ontario didn’t overstep by amending regulations to make the changes it wanted. “Far from being ‘discriminatory,’ the distinctions they draw flow directly from the statutory purpose and the scope of the mandate,” the court said in its ruling. Part of cost-cutting

Ontario is one of the largest purchasers of prescription drugs in the world and spends about $3.4 billion a year on generic drugs. In recent years, it has been trying to reduce those drug costs. In 2010, the Ontario government amended the regulations governing the sale of prescription drugs in the province to prohibit pharmacies from selling their own private-label generic drugs. It feared the practice would reduce competition and drive up prices of generic drugs for the province. Large chains like Shoppers and Rexall wanted to have the option of selling their own generic drugs in order to save money by not having to buy them from an arm’s-length third party. Shoppers has a subsidiary, Sanis Health Inc., that manufactures generic prescription drugs intended for sale mainly at Shoppers pharmacies, and it sells these

private-label drugs in other provinces. In F eb ru ary 2 0 11 , t h e O n t a r i o Superior Court of Justice ruled that the province went too far in barring the pharmacy chains form selling their own generic drugs, but later that year, an appeal court reversed that decision, which is what forced the pharmacies to appeal to the highest court. On Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that the province’s intervention to restrict the kind of generic drugs that pharmacies could sell did not constitute an outright ban. “Private-label regulations do not prohibit manufacturers from selling generic drugs in Ontario’s markets; they restrict market access only if a particular corporate structure is used,” the court said. “That cannot be characterized as a total or near-total ban on selling generic drugs in Ontario.” Other revenue streams

The court battle over pharmacies’ right to sell their own generic drugs is a symptom of some of the cost-cutting measures the province has undertaken in recent years In 2006, Ontario banned the so-called rebates manufacturers of generic drugs would pay pharmacies to give them incentives to carry their products. Some have estimated these payments added up to as much as $750 million a year. It was then that chains such as Shoppers started to look for ways to make up that lost revenue and set up subsidiaries like Sanis to manufacture and sell their own private-label drugs. In September 2012, the province also reduced how much it will pay for the 10 top-selling generic drugs from 25 per cent of the brand-name equivalent to 20 per cent. It said the move would save about $55 million a year and allow the province to increase spending in other areas such as social assistance and disability payments. Peter Sklar, retail analyst at BMO Nesbitt Burns, estimated at the time that the move would cut 1.8 per cent – or 18 cents – from the roughly $10 drug stores get per prescription covered by the public drug plan. Other provinces that are also revisiting their drug pricing plans have been watching the court case closely. CBC News

Minimum gun sentence ruled unconstitutional

Ontario’s highest court has ruled that a threeyear mandatory minimum sentence for possessing a loaded prohibited gun is unconstitutional. The Ontario Appeal Court ruling strikes down a plank of the federal Conservatives’ 2008 omnibus bill, which raised the penalty from one year.

The court found a threeyear prison sentence to be “cruel and unusual punishment” f o r a f i r s t o ff e n c e . The court says the ruling has no significant impact on sentences for people engaged in criminal conduct or who pose a danger to others, saying they should continue to receive sentences to

emphasize deterrence and denunciation.

All three have maintained they’re the victims of a politically motivated witch hunt aimed at putting a lid on a Senate expenses scandal that has engulfed Stephen Harper ’s government f o r a l m o s t a y e a r. “I think it’s an extremely sad day for democracy,” Wallin said as she exited the Senate chamber after the vote, her voice heavy with emotion. “If we can’t expect the rule of law in Canada, then where on earth can you expect it?” Brazeau said nothing as he left the Senate. Duffy did not show up for the vote. The trio retain the title of senator and their health, dental and life insurance coverage, but get no pay and lose their Senate privileges and resources for the duration of the current parliamentary session, which could continue for two years. Harper ’s office expressed satisfaction with the suspensions, which followed weeks of emotional, often explosive debate, punctuated by bombshell revelations from Duffy that directly implicated the Prime Minister ’s Office in the scandal. “Removing these three senators from the public

payroll was the right thing to do,” the PMO said in a statement.

PMO concocted a false story about him taking out a bank loan.

“They should not be collecting a public paycheque.”

The move to suspend the three one-time star Conservative Senate appointees caused tensions within Tory ranks. But in the end, only one Conservative senator, Hugh Segal, voted against all three suspensions.

While the vote to suspend the trio marks the end of a protracted and politically damaging debate, the shock waves wrought by Duffy are still reverberating for Harper and his Conservative g o v e r n m e n t . The RCMP is investigating the three senators, as well as former Liberal senator Mac Harb, and the steady drip of revelations from police documents filed in court is sure to continue to keep the scandal front and centre. Indeed, just hours before the Senate voted to suspend the three, Harper endured another question period grilling, this time about a leaked letter that shows the RCMP is seeking documents that “may potentially be evidence of criminal wrongdoing” by some in the Prime M i n i s t e r ’s O f f i c e . In particular, investigators are looking for emails related to a “script” Duffy said he was given by the PMO to cover up the fact that Nigel Wright, Harper’s chief of staff at the time, gave him $90,000 to repay his disallowed expenses. Duffy has alleged that Wright, under instruction from the prime minister to make a political embarrassment go away, orchestrated a “monstrous” conspiracy to cover up the transaction. He claims

Six more Tory senators abstained on the motion to suspend Brazeau, four abstained when it came to Wallin and Duffy. Most Liberal senators voted against the suspensions but seven, including Liberal Senate leader James Cowan, abstained — taking the advice of Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau. In the end, senators voted 50-29 to suspend Brazeau, with 13 abstentions, and 52-28 to suspend Duffy, with 11 abstentions. In Wallin’s case, the vote was 5227, with 12 abstentions. Brazeau, who voted against the motion, sat hanging his head as the vote proceeded, then stood and shook the hand of Liberal colleague Jim Munson before leaving the chamber after the results were announced. Wallin sat on the edge of her seat, her hands clenched in front of her, twitching her thumbs as the Yes votes were catalogued. She voted against suspending Brazeau and Duffy but chose to abstain when it came to the vote on her own fate. The Canadian Press

FOCUS Is Bullying at Workplace Becoming as Bad as Bullying at School?

Asks Joe Kingsley Eyiah, OCT, Brookview Middle School, Toronto-Canada “Making a complaint or holding someone to account for substandard conduct, so long as it is done fairly and reasonably in good faith, is not bullying”-Anonymous This month a lot of attention has been drawing to bullying at our schools. Schools in Toronto celebrated bullying awareness week with classroom lessons, assemblies and workshops on how to make our schools “bullying-free”! Students were made to image and discuss schools without bullying. Some of the salient points considered included behavior management and standing up to bullies. Bullying is considered by experts as the ways in which boys and girls act out their aggression. It usually occurs amongst younger teens and preteens and usually begins to fade by the later teen years. Research has shown that later primary and middle school years are the crucial years to

over a long period of time. Each incident tends to be trivial, and on its own and out of context does not constitute an offence or grounds for disciplinary or grievance action.

be aware of bullying! Bullying is harmful and can lead to depression, body image issues, and low self-esteem. Both girls and boys can bully in the form of racist, sexist or homophobic remarks. There had been situations where the bullied had taken lives in solitary. The dangers associated with bullying are frightening. I was surprised to learned during the same week that bullying at workplace is as rampant as bullying at school! Adults bullying adults? Bullying or Harassment a t Wo r k p l a c e ? harassment or assault whereas bullying tends to be an accumulation of many small incidents

People are bullied in long term jobs, by managers, co-workers or subordinates, or by clients (bullying, workplace bullying, mobbing, work abuse, harassment, discrimination) and, also, in short term jobs such as the performing arts, agriculture or construction, where the engager, gangmaster or supervisor has complete power over workers. (bullying, harassment, discrimination, assault). Such acts of bullying are not reported in the media as we hear about bullying at school. Work abuse is a serious form of bullying whereby subordinate workers are unduly subjected to unnecessary workloads by the ‘powers that be’ at the workplace. The junior staff or workers

Child safety depends on oversight of unlicensed daycares: NDP Q U E E N ’ S PA R K – NDP Children and Youth Services Critic Monique Taylor says the Liberal government’s lack of oversight of unlicensed daycares is endangering thousands of Ontario children. “Unlicensed daycare inspections in Ontario have revealed a troubling number of violations: children sleeping in damp, airless rooms in soggy bedding or sitting in broken, unsanitary high chairs,” said Taylor during this morning’s question period. “What’s worse, on November 13, there was another reported death of a nine-month-old toddler in an unlicensed daycare in Markham. This death, along with the death of Eva Ravikovich

in Vaughan this year and the others before her, calls into question the policy this government is following in regard to unlicensed daycares.” Ta y l o r s a y s t h e government cannot rely on infrequent inspections of unlicensed daycares as the only form of oversight. Under current regulations, Ministry of Education staff only inspect unlicensed daycares after a complaint. “There were 300 complaints to the ministry about unlicensed child care in the year before two-year-old Eva Ravikovich died in an illegal home daycare that was found to be filthy and overcrowded in Vaughan last July,” explained Taylor. “You admitted

that your ministry had not followed up on all complaints and now, while the Ombudsman is conducting an investigation into these serious allegations— another death of an innocent child.” Taylor said the glaring lack of oversight must be addressed immediately. “Inspecting only when there’s complaint is too late and is resulting in tragic deaths,” said Taylor. “The time to act is now. The Education Minister should do the right thing and bring oversight to unlicensed daycares in Ontario instead of ignoring complaints. Media contact: Andrew Schwab, 416-325-2756

for the fear of losing their jobs put up with such workplace bullying! It must be noted that making a complaint or holding someone to account for substandard conduct, so long as it is done fairly and reasonably in good faith, is not bullying. However, if such complain is continuously made by the manager to frustrate the worker despite the

worker’s good efforts at work then the complain or the bad remarks about the worker becomes an act of bullying! Workplace bullying destroys teams, causing disenchantment, demoralisation, demotivation, disaffection, and alienation. Bullies run dysfunctional and inefficient organisations; staff turnover and sickness absence are high whilst morale, productivity

and profitability are low. Any perceived efficiency gains from bullying are a short term illusion: Long term prospects are always at serious risk. Those bullied become isolated, controlled and subjugated. As we say to students who are being bullied to stand up to the bullies, workers who are being bullied MUST ALSO STAND UP to their bullies. What do you think?

Auditors fire back at Senate The team hired to audit Sen. Mike Duffy says its findings were kept under lock and key, leaving the Senate as the most likely source of leaks of restricted information to the Prime Minister’s Office. Deloitte officials were grilled last Thursday to shed light on RCMP court filings that show PMO officials were in possession of information months before it became public. E-mails show the PMO orchestrated efforts to convince Deloitte to stop an audit into Duffy’s expenses as part of a

scheme to go easy on him. The e-mails show Sen. Irving Gerstein called a contact at Deloitte, which also handles the books for the Conservative party, at the request of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s former chief of staff, Nigel Wright, to see if the audit could be terminated if Duffy repaid more than $90,000. “Absolutely not,’’ audit leader Garry Trimm said when asked if Michael Runia, the Deloitte partner called by Gerstein, interfered in the audit.

Timm told a Senate committee he cut the call short. “He contacted me on one occasion in one phone call. The phone call was he wanted to know if Sen. Duffy were to repay , how much would that be,” Timm said. “I told him I can’t divulge or disclose any confidential information.” Trimm said Deloitte and the Senate subcommittees that hired the firm were the only ones privy to protected data. New report condemns Wynne government for slow progress on child poverty: DiNovo

QUEEN’S PARK – In a new report released today, Campaign 2000 strongly condemns the Liberal government’s 2012 decision to delay scheduled increases in the Ontario Child Benefit and to freeze the minimum wage. Ontario NDP AntiPoverty Critic Cheri DiNovo says these recent Liberal government decisions are to blame for the slow progress in reducing the child poverty in this province. “In 2008, this government made grand

Helping Abused and At-Risk Women Find Jobs Ontario Supporting Community Organizations Offering Skills Training for Women

Ontario is helping abused and at-risk women learn new skills to support them in rebuilding their lives and create economic security for themselves and their families. Through its Employment Training for Abused/AtRisk Women program the province is helping community organizations empower more than 640 women with critical skills training to help them find work. The training includes training in a variety of industries including hospitality, health care, skilled trades and transportation and is offered by 10 organizations across the province, with five serving the Greater Toronto Area. Women enrolled in the program also receive support to help address the impact of abuse, such as safety planning, counselling, and referrals to other provincial programs and supports. Elizabeth Ohene recalls how the U.S spied on her Daily Graphic reports I have been thinking about the brouhaha that has accompanied the exposure of the spying activities of the Americans. From what I can make out, nobody thinks it is such a big deal for a country to spy; it is simply that you should not be caught doing it. And if you must be caught it is OK if the target is a known enemy or at least an opponent of some kind. Spying on your friends seems to be no-no. Yo u d o n o t d o i t . What intrigues me most in the entire story is not about the targets being friends or enemies; it is the allegation that the Americans have been bugging the phones of 35 heads of state. We all know now from documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden that German Chancellor Angela Merkel is one of the 35 and I think I can leave the outrage to her and the Germans. What I am curious about is why have some heads of state been left out?

Can we take it that they are not important enough to be bugged? Is there a badge that one can wear with the legend: “I was bugged b y t h e A m e r i ca n s ”? Are there any bragging rights and if I can show that the Americans once eavesdropped my conversation does that put me in the Angela Merkel ranking? F r o m code to

M o r s e mobiles

I had been under the impression the Americans were not choosy about who they bugged; they simply vacuum every sound everybody makes. I have an experience, which goes back almost 40 years, that would seem to bear this out. In those days journalists out in the field used to send their stories by telex - there were no mobile phones. It used to be the most stressful part of any foreign assignment and I recall the telex

department at the post o ff i c e i n E t h i o p i a ’s capital, Addis Ababa, being especially notorious - many a tough hack was reduced to tears at the sheer frustration of trying to file a story from there. When I was sent to Ethiopia to cover an emergency meeting of the now-defunct Organisation of African Unity (OAU), I was, therefore, very grateful that Ghana’s embassy in Addis Ababa offered to send my stories through their signal system, enabling me to bypass the horrors of the post office.

went to a party at the U S a m b a s s a d o r ’s residence and the ambassador was generous with congratulations about my coverage of the OAU meeting. This was the emergency meeting trying to decide which liberation movement in Angola to recognise, but that is another story. I w as glad to learn the embassy was reading the newspaper s o m e t i c u l o u s l y.

Then I found myself being led a little apart from the crowd and the ambassador lowered his voice and asked why the last piece I filed was not published. I was momentarily s t u m p e d . How did he know there was a last piece that had not been published? I looked him straight in the face and he looked at me straight back. I later recounted the

incident to the principal secretary of the foreign affairs ministry and I remember him reacting in a quite matter of fact way: “Oh the Americans, they listen to all our traffic.” It seems nothing has changed, be it in Morse code or on mobile phones. I filed five stories in all and got back to Accra and was told by the news editor that my last story had not been used for reasons which I do not now recall. BBC

So I wrote my stories and gave the sheets of paper to the man in the code room and he sent it to the foreign ministry in Ghana’s capital, Accra, and my newspaper went and collected it for publication. I remember being fascinated by the World War Two technology, Morse code, and thrilled that my stories were being sent the same way as diplomatic cables. A week or so later I

IMMIGRATION AND SOCIAL ISSUES By: James A. Kwaateng, B.A. (Hons), LLB (Hons)

Eligibility for the Re-opened and Trimmed Federal Skilled Worker Program Canada Immigration reopened applications for permanent residence under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) in May 2013 and a list of 24 occupations that are eligible under the program has been released. The trimmed eligible occupations include engineering managers; financial and investment analysts; geoscientists and oceanographers; civil engineers; mechanical engineers; chemical engineers, mining engineers, geological engineers, petroleum engineers, aerospace engineers; and computer engineers. The other eligible occupations are land surveyors; computer programmers and interactive media developers; industrial instrument technicians and mechanics; inspectors in public and environmental health and occupational health and safety; audiologists and

speech-language pathologists; physiotherapists; occupational therapists; medical laboratory technologists; medical laboratory technicians and pathologists’ assistants; respiratory therapists; clinical perfusionists and cardiopulmonary technologists; medical radiation technologists; medical sonographers; and cardiology technicians and electrophysiological diagnostic technologists. Canada Immigration has further decided that effective May 4, 2013 it would no longer accept Arranged Employment Opinion (AEOs) from Human Resources Skills Development Canada in

The Immigration contemplates accepting a total of 5,000 new applications in all the eligible occupation streams mentioned above from May 4, 2013 to April 30, 2014, and, within the 5,000 applications, the Immigration will accept 300 in each priority occupation. However, in the PhD stream, the Immigration will accept 1,000 applications from May 4, 2013 to April 30, 2014. There will also be no cap on applications with a qualifying job offer. That is good news, particularly, for those applying from within Canada. In order to be eligible to apply under the new program, you should fall within one of three categories the Immigration has specified. The specifications are that: you

should have at least one year of continuous fulltime paid work experience in the last ten years in an eligible occupation; or have a permanent fulltime job offer from a Canadian employer evidence of which must be in writing on company letterhead and signed by the responsible officer, and meet the arranged employment requirements; or must be an international student currently enrolled in a doctoral (PhD) program, delivered by a recognized postsecondary school located in Canada, and must have completed at least 2 years towards the completion of your PhD, and in good academic standing and are not a recipient of a Government of Canada award requiring you to return to your home country to apply your knowledge and skills. If you meet all the eligibility criteria and minimum requirements, then your

application to immigrate to Canada as a skilled worker will be assessed against a point system comprising six selection factors from which you should obtain 67 points. This assessment comprises 25 maximum points for education; 28 maximum points for ability in English and/or French; 15 maximum points for work experience; 12 maximum points for age; 10 maximum points for arranged employment in Canada; and 10 maximum points for adaptability. Having qualified, you have to demonstrate that you have enough money to support yourself and your family members after you arrive in Canada. The amount of funds required is assessed according to your family size using 50 percent of Statistics Canada’s most current Low Income Cutoff (LICO). The funds must be available and transferrable and must

not be encumbered by debts or other obligations. Applicants already working in Canada or who have arranged employments in Canada do not have to meet the financial requirement. The federal skilled worker program has been undergoing frequent changes and it still remains one of the complex areas in immigration applications. Prospective applicants or their relatives are therefore strongly advised to contact immigration law professionals for more information and guidance. James A. Kwaateng, is an Immigration Law practitioner with offices located at 168A Oakdale Road, Suite 4, Toronto, Ontario. For thorough discussion of your immigration and related social and legal issues, contact him at telephone number (416) 743-2758.

Sapers adds that overall spending in the Canadian justice system rose 23 per cent in the past decade.

“During that same period, Canada’s crime rate fell by exactly the same proportion,” he said. It now costs an average of $110,000 a year to house a male inmate, nearly twice as much to imprison a female inmate. “The growth in the custody population appears to be policy, not crime driven. After all, crime rates are down while incarceration rates grow,” he said, adding that crime across Canada has been declining for more

Tips For Achieving Your Financial Goals

By Eddie Twumasi Smith Bsc(Hons) Chem Eng, MBA,CGA, CPA

and how one thinks is not connected to attracting wealth, however it is widely understood that people do not just make m o n ey b a s ed s o l ely on what they know.

Year in and year out, we make new resolutions come the New Year to achieve new objectives or set new targets to overcome. However, in some cases we are not able to over these set goals due to one reason or the other. The principal constraints to some of these financial goals are our behavior or attitudes of not abiding by our fundamental principles of goal setting, financial planning and execution. The Webster dictionary defined principles as an accepted or professed rule of action or conduct; or a fundamental law of truth from which others are derived. Principles are the undeniable facts or attributes of nature which in many ways are intertwined in our choices and decisions. Ghanaian diplomat and 2001 Nobel Peace Prize recipient once stated, “to live is to choose, but to choose well, you must know who you are and what you stand for (principles), where you want to go and why you want to get there”. Dr. Mensah Otabil in his best-selling Pathway of success stated success is a choice, just as failure is a choice. He further surmised that success is conditional, based on a product of the mind, our words, and sum total of our actions In the nutshell, this article will highlight some of the myths and pre-requisites for financial breakthrough or freedom, regardless of the external challenges that serves as constraints to financial freedom. Why do some people attract wealth like a magnet, while others find it challenging to have excess at the end of the month? Observations that have been made of the richest people in the world have been that financial success is about 80% affected by human beliefs and attitudes towards money, while only 20% of financial success is affected by the knowledge and skills one possesses about ways to earn money. In this case, it would be a fallacy to believe that knowledge

Thomas J. Stanley conducted a survey and interviewed 733 multimillionaires. The survey asked respondents to list 30 factors which, in their opinion, have had the greatest impact on their achievement. Summarizing the data, the first top five of the most important factors were as follows (in the brackets is shown the percentage of respondents who named this factor): 1. Fair treatment of others (57%) 2. Self-discipline (57%) 3. Being able to make an agreement with others (56%) 4. A spouse that understands and s u p po r t s yo u ( 4 9 %) 5. Ability to work with more dedication than other people (47%) Now many people may disagree with the ranking of the above listed factors, or the factors altogether. There are also many sayings and potential myths out there that describe success to depend on many different things, such as you must have initial capital, rich relatives, acquaintances and to even have the ability to use and climb over others. If you happen to have this mindset, I have bad news for you! You fall into that group of people who believe that the formula for success is “To Have... To Make... To Be”. Well, the fact is that if you do fall into this group your formula is flipped upside down. In reality, the contrary is true. At first, you have to be self-confident, responsible, ambitious, tenacious, diligent, and treat others as you would want to be treated. Secondly, then experiment with some i d e a s , c r e a t e , g r o w, take risks, network, have a stable support system around you and eventually you’ll have high performance, success, recognition and in turn the financial success will follow. . In essence, hard work is a key foundation of attracting wealth to you. In the Good Book as found in Proverbs 12:24, it states “the hand of the diligent will rule, but the lazy man/woman will be put to forced labor. Also Proverbs 10:4, we are told, He who has a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. Also

Proverbs 6:6-11 reiterates the same message. That is not say for those who live from pay-cheque to pay-cheque are lazy, but in the context of the above, may possibly need to apply or enhance some of the characteristic traits connected to attracting wealth and to help increase on the sole source of income. People often complain about their low salaries. Do employers really pay too little? Are you familiar with the feeling or the thought that you would have more money if only your employers would raise your wages? However, an increase in salary is not in every case essential and does not always matter. Why? Because most people obey the Parkinson’s Law. This law says, “work expands to fill the time available for its completion” meaning that if you give yourself a month to complete a one week assignment, then (psychologically speaking) the task will increase in complexity and become more overwhelming as to fill that month. It may not even fill the extra time with more work, but just stress and tension about having to get it done. And often tasks are procrastinated until the last minute, all the while people remain supposedly busy holding back the progress they are making. Another condition to attract financial success is to develop the habit of constantly breaking Parkinson’s Law in our lives. This all has to do with procrastination. Procrastination is generically known as the act of doing something from which one derives enjoyment, and thus putting off important tasks to a later time. With this in mind, do employers really pay too little? or is it the way we utilize our time that makes the difference. If we can break Parkinson’s Law and complete tasks in the appropriate time frame they are required to be completed in, then our time remaining time can be maximized doing other tasks that are connected and engaged towards making possible wealth creating decisions.

Can I keep one of my Credit Cards when I am declaring bankruptcy?

By: Ken Ntiamoa, MBABIA Insolvency Counsellor

In a bankruptcy situation, many people dread not being able to use a credit card because they are so used to using it. The above question, therefore, is frequently asked – “Can I keep a credit card? I need it for emergencies.” The simple answer is No. The bankruptcy laws do not allow a bankrupt to keep or use a credit card while bankrupt. In the second place, even if you hid the credit card from your bankruptcy proceedings, the credit card company will soon find out that

you have declared bankruptcy and cancel it. Once the card is cancelled, you would be forced to either include the bill in your bankruptcy proceedings or you would have to pay back that bill. If you include it in your proceedings, you will pay back every cent you have borrowed on that card since you declared bankruptcy. In an extreme

In a Consumer Proposal s i t u a t i o n , h o w e v e r, you may keep a credit card, if at the time of the proposal, the balance on the card is zero. However, you cannot use the credit card while your proposal is in force. Sacrifice your corrupt ministers for our help

Ken Agyapong tells Mahama NPP Member of Parliament for Assin Central has urged President John Mahama to “sacrifice” some of his appointees he considers as corrupt and surplus to his administration before he can ask Ghanaians to help him (Mahama) fix Ghana’s ailing economy. Kennedy Agyapong, however, expressed his readiness to help the president fight corruption if only he (President Mahama) will heed the advice he has offered. He was reacting to the president’s call on his critics to join forces with him in bettering the lives of Ghanaians instead of raving and ranting on radio.

President Mahama, In other words, the amount of money that you make in speaking as the Guest your salary is not in every of Honour at the 120th case the essential matter, celebration of the Catholic but by being mindful of Parkinson’s Law, our incomes can always be supplemented according to the way our time and energy is expended cont'd on pg. 30

situation, you may even be charged with a fraudulent use of a credit card.

Archdiocese of Accra, Sunday, pontificated that excessive talk on radio aimed at attacking his led administration will not help solve issues. “It doesn’t pay to vent our frustration on radio talk show programmes. If we must build a better and prosperous nation, all of us need to come together and act in concert. The quest to build a desirous, prosperous and better Ghana is the responsibility of all of us,” he said He added that notwithstanding the challenges confronting the country, “God’s favour is still on Ghana. Ghana is not at a standstill”. But speaking on Adom FM, the outspoken Assin Central MP wondered how the president could be desirous of help when some of his appointees

dabble in corruption and dubious deals. “If we advise him and he does not politicize it, then we are willing to work with him…If he wants us to help, his actions will indicate to us (Ghanaians)… The issue is that, those involved in corrupt practices believe they have close ties with the presidency so they don’t care. They continuously do things with impunity. “Those who parade around in the corridors of power claim that they are indispensable… The President should put his foot down and sacrifice some of them (appointees) for them to know that it’s Ghana first. If not, it will be very difficult for Ghanaians to help him fix the country,” Hon Ken Agyapong said. Peacefmonline.com

TALKING FINANCES

Haves, Have Nots and Financial Equilibrium By: Gabriel Quayson, Toronto In my article in March 2013, I profiled a real life story of a single mother with 3 kids, working part time and living pay check to pay check that won $10.9million dollars. She spent her entire windfall in 9 years and went back to the same financial situation as her pre windfall days. This article is about financial equilibrium meaning that people find ways to stay within their financial comfort zone regardless of how much money passes through their hands. Poor people want to be rich and rich people want to get richer. People who are poor are generally unhappy with their financial condition and want to improve it; rich people who enjoy their financial situation want to maintain it. If there

are so many poor people who want to improve their financial situation, why can’t most poor people become rich? It is evident in our society that rich people generally tend to stay rich or get richer while the poor among us stay poor. How and why does this happen? There is a famous sociological study that says if you took all the money away from everyone and divided it EQUALLY among rich and poor that within 5 years the wealth would be redistributed amongst people almost exactly as it was before the experiment. You might say this is ridiculous. Certainly if poor people got their hands on some money they would finally have the opportunity and the world would be

are held by 1% of the people. The top 1% of U.S. households owns nearly twice as much of America’s corporate wealth as they did just 15 years ago. For the first time in U.S. history, banks own a greater share of residential housing net worth in the United States than all individual Americans put together. Poor people on the other hand are the proud owners of these statistics. As of 2007, the bottom 80 percent of American households held about 7% of the liquid financial assets. The bottom 50 percent of income earners in the United States now collectively own less than 1 percent of the nation’s wealth. For the first time in U.S. history, more than 40 million Americans are on food stamps.

It is no accident that rich people are rich. Generally speaking, people who are rich have several things in common, the following are the most prevalent: a) Rich people own property, b) Rich people own businesses; c) Rich people own investments (stocks, bonds and mutual funds) The statistics above serve to reinforce the concepts There are many recent of why rich people are articles and studies that rich. The Canadian Human Right Int'l Organization (CHRIO) PARDON AND WAIVER PROGRAM

The Canadian Human Rights International Organization (CHRIO) is a not-for-profit non-governmental organization (NGO). It is a registered Canadian charity, located in 1 of the 13 recognized priority neighbourhoods (Jane &Finch) in the city of Toronto. CHRIO was founded in 2003, and is made up of professionals from the fields of law, social work, economics, sociology, psychology, and criminology. Despite our different academic backgrounds, what we all share is the belief that there is power and privilege associated with race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, political affiliation faith,

class and abilities. As a result, attempting to access even the most basic necessities of life is not the same for some as it is for others. To c o m b a t t h i s , w e primarily work with those who are vulnerable, marginalized or in conflict with the law. CHRIO offers a number of services that aim to benefit individuals and the community as whole. R e c e n t l y, w e b e g a n the Canadian Pardons Program, an initiative where we complete Canadian pardons and United States entry waivers on behalf of the public. As a community based charity, the price for preparing an application will always take into account your financial

situation. As such, our fee is determined on a case by case bases. The rationale for this program is that, for those who have a criminal record, opportunities to advance and move on from past mistakes can be difficult. Furthermore, there is an undoubted stigma associated with having a criminal record; the barriers associated with it can affect such things as employment, travel, immigration, adoption and even apartment rentals. For those who are not Canadian citizens, the need to have your criminal record removed is much greater. Recent changes to Canada’s immigration laws mean that you can be deported for a minor crime, no

Tips For Achieving Your Financial Goals cont'd from pg. 28 and used efficiently during those working hours dedicated to our employers; furthermore, additional time that can be used in wealth generating activities. If this describes your situation, then your employers, who pay insufficiently, are not guilty. It’s only your own habits that have placed you directly into the “hamster wheel” in this vicious cycle. The good news is the cycle can be changed. Which is of greater worth? To have a wellpaid job? Or create y ou r o w n b u s in es s ? Continue to work for others or create your own business? It depends on your individual needs. There are different types of income flows. There are active and passive incomes flows. Active income is generated when you get paid for your time at work. If you work, you get paid. If you do not work, you do not get paid. Passive income is generated when your time and effort to the work may be paid for later on and many times over. For example, a writer wrote a book within two years. However, the book became a bestseller and he will get income for many years for the contribution of two years. Investing also generates passive income. If you invest your active income wisely, it can create a passive income stream. Yo u r o w n b u s i n e s s can provide a passive income too, but only if you will create a business system that works in the

long run without your direct intervention. Most people set up a business just to create a job for themselves. They do not work for an employer. They are working for their business and create an active income flow. In the long term, the investment of this active income becomes a continuous source of income stream. For those who do not see long-term prospects for starting their own business and do not want to take great risk or do not have original business ideas, there is the ability to connect to existing business systems, such as network marketing. This is another way, accessible to all, to create a passive income stream. You just need to choose an organization which is reliable, has a good reputation and history of success and a good education system that will allow you to learn from the leaders, not from ordinary academics. Robert Kiyosaki, the famous author of books on financial success, calls network marketing a franchise for the twenty-first century.

Financial freedom is the only way to real freedom. Financial freedom is achieved when your passive income allows you to live your desired lifestyle. Then you can work only if you want to. The problem is that for most people it seems unrealistic. This is largely because we come short of self-discipline. In life, it seems like a self-service bistro: All those, who stand at the beginning of the line today, once stood at the end of the line. Most people change lines too often, after only reaching the middle of the line. They will never reach the front of the line, where the tastiest desserts are packed. The condition for financial success is simple. The earlier you develop habits for increasing your capital, the sooner you will enjoy the fruits of financial success and freedom. What then is the formula for financial success?

The true financial success formula is simple: spend less than you earn and invest the difference. Also, consider alternative W h y f o c u s o n income or passive p a s s i v e i n c o m e ? income and constantly reinvest the growth Passive income can of income or surplus. eventually set you free. matter how long you have been in Canada. The only way to seal a criminal record is to apply for a pardon (now known as a record suspension). When it is granted, “the record” will be kept separate and apart from other criminal records in the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) (database where all Canadian criminal records are held). Pardon eligibility depends on the seriousness of your conviction(s) and the amount of time that has passed since you completed your sentence. Once you have been granted a pardon, a criminal record check will reveal no convictions. However, this does not mean your record is erased, if you are convicted of a crime after you receive a pardon, all of your past and present convictions can be revealed during a criminal record search. Another restriction that one may face as a result of a criminal record is in regards to travel, p a r t i c u l a r l y, t o t h e United States. entering the country if you were charged with a crime at the U.S. boarder or remained in the country longer then you were permitted. Because United States customs and boarder officers have access to the information stored in CPIC, it means they can access your criminal record. If the above applies to you, you can legally enter the United States by obtaining a United States entry waiver prepared by CHRIO. Eligibility for an

MOVING FORWARD WITH OUR YOUTH THE FUTURE OF OUR COMMUNITY

Carding of African Canadian Youth by the Police Racial Profiling under another Name By Kwabena Akuoko, MSW, RSW,, Toronto

The core tenet of Policing which is serving and protecting encompasses hidden and sometimes unacceptable practices on the part of law enforcement officers. The most talked about objectionable practice in policing relates to what is commonly referred to as racial profiling. Police use this controversial method to overly screen suspected criminals on the basis of race and other characteristics. Racial profiling is not only controversial, but also illegal. Because it is simply any discriminatory practices that target individuals for suspicion of wrongdoing based on their race, ethnicity, skin colour and other traits. As a routine, some police officers profile certain individuals by heavily relying on these set of attributes falsely believed to be associated with crime. A case in point is when officers use race or ethnicity to determine, which drivers to stop for traffic violations or which individuals and groups to search for drugs. Also, the practice of relying on a religion to subject certain groups to extra scrutiny by law enforcement officials falls under racial profiling. The act of police officers pursuing a suspect in which the specific descriptions of the individual include among other things race, ethnicity or skin colour or combination of other identifying factors does not however constitute racial profiling. Although racial profiling is a criminal conduct considered to be an affront to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom, such method is still prevalent. And hence all Canadian police agencies, including the national force, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police supposedly denounce and forbid such practice. But regardless of the efforts by the Canadian policing community to eradicate racial profiling, it continues, and remains one of the most controversial topics, especially when it comes to policing in minority communities across the country. Closely related to racial profiling is carding. Racial profiling and carding are two sides of the same coin. The latter is a practice in which the police randomly stop, question and document citizens following encounters in what are mostly non-criminal. Police contacts with citizens and gathering information about them even where crimes have not been committed are otherwise known as Street Checks, 208s, Field Information Reports or Carding. The practice is euphemistically known in law enforcement cycles as community policing. Carding, which is particularly common among large urban Canadian Police Services, including obviously the Toronto Police allows officers to document citizens in mostly noncriminal encounters as investigative tool. The information gathered on individuals is later on transferred to police’s internal database for future investigative purposes. Such information gathering practice is nothing shy of racial profiling. However, police deem it as justifiable and within the realms of acceptable policing

policy. While carding is legal, the system is susceptible to abuse and hence many critics equate it with racial profiling. As I have e x p l a i n e d t h u s f a r, carding in many respects is no different than racial profiling because it is purportedly and primarily undertaken by the police for reasons of safety, security or public protection by falsely relying on stereotypes vis-à-vis individuals and groups’ race, colour, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, or a set of other factors, rather than on a reasonable suspicion. To single out individuals for greater scrutiny, different treatment or even sheer contact epitomizes discrimination and is unacceptable. I d e a l l y, c a r d i n g a l l o w s for all citizens regardless of skin colour or other characteristics to be contacted by the police for the purpose of serving and protecting, yet minorities, especially young Black males are frequently carded. This is evidenced by recent media reports, which indicate that disproportionate higher number of Black male youth compared to their White peers are stopped, questioned and documented by the police for non-criminal encounters. Backed by the law, the police can stop anyone under the disguised idea of serving and protecting. The police also claim to use the carding system as investigative tool and crime prevention strategy. What people need to know is that once stopped by the police, one is usually interrogated regarding identity, reason for being at a specific geographic location in the community where one is stopped and a whole host of ordinary, yet pertinent personal information. Where the similarities between carding and racial profiling become evident is that all the information regarding officers’ non-criminal contact with citizens is documented on Card or Form and kept by the police. The information ultimately ends up on the police computer data base for future use. Carding is racial profiling under different name. This fact is exemplified by a former Toronto police officer’s candid perspectives about the system as reported in a recent Toronto Star’s article. According to the officer in question, the way and manner in which young Black males dress and speak make them the target of the carding system. Similar to racial profiling, wrong perceptions strongly play a crucial role in how officers frequently stop, question and document their contacts with African Canadian young males than other young Canadians. The carding system and racial profiling are both unfair policing practices that disproportionately target Black and other dark skin young Canadians. It is immoral and unacceptable for the police to rely on skin colour or race to single out certain individuals or groups for contacts in order to ascertain information for future purposes. Like racial profiling, carding, which the police supposedly use to service and protect society, must be understood in the context of discrimination.

Mayor Rob Ford stripped of powers in Toronto council vote cont'd from pg. 1 budget to Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly and a vote of 30-10 to prevent the Mayor from designating key items for council debate. Mayor Ford abstained from voting on the advice of the city’s integrity commissioner. Ford is now essentially the mayor in name only, with most of his powers transferred to Kelly.

Councillor. John Filion, who moved the motion, said the vote “was done by a democratically elected Council that, combined, got more votes than the mayor.” But the Mayor’s vocal brother Councillor Doug Ford said City Council “did not have the authority to change the legal statutes that the province has put out in front of us.”

Before the vote, several Councillors stood up to speak to the motion before Mayor Ford addressed the chamber as the last speaker. He dismissed the move to limit his powers as “nothing more than a coup d’etat,” and accused Councillors of telling Toronto voters “that their vote does not count.”

This watershed special Council meeting follows another tumultuous week at City Hall that saw Ford admit to having bought illegal drugs since being elected to Toronto’s top office. The following day Ford sparked outrage by making a crude sexual comment while on live TV.

Then, in a bizarre turn, F o rd s ai d t h e m o v e reminded him of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s decision to attack Kuwait. “And President (George H.W.) Bush said, ‘I warn you, I warn you, I warn you, do not.’ Well folks, if you think American-style politics is nasty, you guys have just attacked Kuwait.” Councilor Denzil Minnan-Wong, one of the Councillors who was most vocal with his calls for the mayor to step down, dismissed concerns that council was acting outside its authority. He insisted that the move by Council was perfectly legal. “Council is taking legal measures that we believe are enforceable. We did the right thing today”, he told reporters.

The vote capped off a day of many wild moments in council chambers Monday, as councillors debated the motion. About two hours into the meeting, Ford rose from his seat and began circling council chambers as one of his aides took pictures of the crowd. Some individuals heckled the mayor and yelled “shame,” while smaller arguments broke out between spectators. According to reporters in the chamber, the mayor’s brother then got involved in a verbal altercation with members of the public. CP24’s Katie Simpson reported that Coun. Doug Ford “called someone a scumbag.” At one point, the mayor broke into a run around the

side of the chamber and crashed into Coun. Pam McConnell, who nearly fell to the ground. Ford helped her get to her feet before he walked away. A 10 minute recess was called and all members of the public were ordered to leave council chambers. When debate resumed, Coun. Paula Fletcher asked the mayor to apologize to McConnell. “It was a complete accident,” Ford said. “I do sincerely apologize to you, Coun. McConnell.”. Later, McConnell could be seen at her desk in the council chamber, holding ice to her face. She told reporters the collision gave her a fat lip. At another moment in the debate, as Doug Ford was speaking, Coun. Paul Ainslie tried to interject. Ford accused him of having “problems of your own,” and Rob Ford began making gestures of taking a drink and then driving a car. Ainslie received a warning from police earlier this year when he was stopped by a R.I.D.E. check. He was not charged. There have been repeated and vocal calls for Ford to resign since he rcently admitted to smoking crack cocaine about a year ago and to being inebriated at certain public events. However, Ford has remained steadfast that he will not resign and he plans to run for re-election in the 2014 mayoral race. CTV News

Frankly Speaking

When “Watchmen” are suspected of stealing The Tainted and Sinking Image of Ghana’s Judiciary By: Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB

It is becoming almost impossible to believe that Ghana’s fledgling democracy will succeed. “Democracy” which our Twi Radio Commentators in Ghana describe as “ka bi ma menka bi literally meaning government functioning under free speech…you speak, and I speak. It also means having the right speak your mind on any major issue of local and national concern without fear. This system of government is not African and for that matter it is not Ghanaian. African traditional systems of governments are based on monarchies and dictatorships. The King or Chief is the supreme ruler whose word rules. The King’s decisions and actions are not subjected to any challenge or scrutiny by his subjects or citizens. And this is my greatest problem with this whole institution of “Chieftaincy” or “Kingship” anywhere in the world. The Kingship or Chieftaincy system is not based on any required skills or wisdom. One becomes a King or Chief not because he is the smartest guy in the village, town or country but just because he was, by accident of birth, born into a certain family of equal rascals and demented folks known as a “Royal Family”. In such situations, “royalty” therefore does not equate smartness or wisdom. So all around us in the world and especially in most African societies, we have these guys masquerading as “Chiefs” and “Kings” who actually belong to the refuse dump. Nothing that they do and say makes any sense. But they are royals “by birth” and therefore get the entitlement to “rule” over their people. Enter the conquering colonialists into Africa and they introduced a system of government called democracy. Under this system of government, the villages and towns get to keep and constantly enstool their chiefs, but they are for ceremonial shows. The real power belongs to a higher authority called government whose members, including the headman, are elected by the people. This means that the headman and his boys will get the political power through the exercise

of election or voting by the people. As with all human institutions, those that invented this system called democracy also thought that there is the danger of the headman becoming too powerful so they created a system whereby this democracy will have some kind of check and balances. They therefore divided the system of government called democracy into three levels: The first one with the headman is called the Executive which is charged with the day-to-day administration of the country, oversees the finances of the country, and controls the security apparatus of the country to protect the country from both internal and external aggression. The second level they called the Legislature. This body which is also known as Parliament is charged with the responsibility to make laws for the country. The people that inhabit this Legislature are expected to be elected directly by the citizens of that society. They therefore owe their existence in office to the power of the people. They are the people’s representatives who are watching over the interests of the people. The headman and his boys

in the Executive Arm are supposed to implement the laws that are made by the Legislature. Because there are people in every society who will always want to do bad things, the inventors of the democracy business also created another arm called the Judiciary which is charged with the responsibility of implementing and enforcing the laws passed by the Legislature. All these three Arms of government: Executive with the Headman, the Legislature headed by someone called the Speaker, and the Judiciary headed by a Chief Justice, are all supposed to be independent of each other arm and ensuring that each arm of government does not go beyond the power given to it. If citizens feel aggrieved by any actions of the Executive, the Legislature and/ or its appointed delegates or officers, the citizen(s) has a right to file a complaint with the Judiciary to investigate. Being “independent” they are expected to interpret the law and apply its sticks without fear or favour to any person whether in the Executive, the Legislature or any powerful member of society. On the surface, this democracy arrangement is so attractive and should work very well to protect the lives, property and services of the people and society generally. A fourth Arm has also emerged which was originally not part of this Three-Arm Democracy arrangement but has been found to be necessary to protect the interest of the people.

Cynthia High Tech Videos Quality Video Productions

That Arm which is known now as the Fourth Arm of the Realm is the Media. It consists of so many different entities that have different ways of doing their work. Some are in print; others are electronic. They are newspapers, radio, television and these days what we call social networking sites. The sad outcome of this democracy arrangement of division of powers in our part of the world called Ghana is that the division of powers with each Arm acting as a check and balance over the other has not worked. Why?? Members of all the Arms of democracy, including the fourth one, have become so corrupt that it is not clear who watches over the other. To start with, so much power has been concentrated in the hands of the headman of the Executive that the second Arm, the Legislature, has become the messenger and rubber stamp of the Executive and its headman. Most members of the Legislature, especially those belonging to the ruling political party, have become the “Yes Men” and ordinary messengers of the headman and his Executive. In Ghana there is now so much competition to steal public resources by members of the Legislature and Executive that both groups will do anything, infact everything, to retain the power that they have …from the people that elected them. Citizens therefore thought that the only body or bodies left to protect their interest

and resources will be the Judiciary which consist of people who have studied most of the big books in law and can therefore interpret the law “without fear or favour”. Ha! Ha!! ha!!! Recent events have proved that the previously respected Judiciary in Ghana has become more corrupt and consists of thieves just like the headman, Executive and the Legislature. There have been so many reports in Ghana over the years about how the members of the Judiciary called Judges collect bribes before interpreting the law. In December 2012, there were elections in Ghana through which people were supposed to choose the Headman of the Executive, and the “Yes-Men” in the Legislature. After two rounds of voting there was disagreement as to who had won the battle for the headman position. The tall man said he won and the short man said he won. Because there was disagreement, the short man and his people decided to use the third Arm of the government, the Judiciary, supposedly independent-minded, to settle the dispute. After a process that lasted eight months, the Judiciary rendered a judgement which clearly showed that they were the most corrupt bunch of all the four arms of government. Reports have started flying with all intensity that the nine Judges who sat on the highest level of the Judiciary, the Supreme Court, collected bribes. First there were rumours

that the Chief of one of the powerful tribes in Ghana was the one who was given the responsibility by the Headman of the Executive to go and “buy” off the Judges. This was serious indeed. And then recently a Deputy Minister in the Headman’s outfit also said publicly that the Headman used the wife of one of his friends to go and give Tuo Zaafi and Goro to the Judges before they rendered the stupid judgment they rendered on August 29, 2013. Well, if the frog comes from under the pond to say that life under the water is hot, who are we to challenge it? The frog will be speaking from what we call lived experience. Asem aba!!! If the watchmen of the law are stealing from those looking for justice, where else can we turn to? Is this the democracy that we were promised will bring good governance and peace? No wonder the late Nigerian Afro-Rock musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti translated “democracy” as demonstration of craziness”. The accusations of stealing and bribery of the top judges of the country has become so serious that the Head Woman of the Judiciary has set up a committee to investigate the bribery allegation levelled against the top judges. Any hope in hell? The answer is no!!! How can the thief police the thief??? Our democracy is on life support. The watchmen have all abandoned their posts and joined in the stealing spree.

ECOWAS Court dismisses case against Ghana The E C O WA S Community Court of Justice has dismissed the case brought against Ghana by some Nigerian traders doing business in the country. The Court rejected the arguments of the traders that sections of the new Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC) Act which bar foreigners from engaging in retail trade in the country’s markets were in violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on free movement of people and goods. It upheld submissions filed by the AttorneyGeneral, Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, and argued by Deputy AG, Dr. Dominic Ayine and Chief State Attorney, Dorothy Afriyie Ansah. T h e y, a m o n g o t h e r things, argued that the law was necessary to protect Ghana’s domestic interests and could not have been said to violate the ECOWAS Protocol on free movement of people and goods. Some Nigerian traders, led by the National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) and the Nigerian Union of Traders Association, Ghana (NUTAG), petitioned the ECOWAS Community

Court of Justice over the new GIPC Act which was revised in July this year and among other things, specifies the criteria foreigners would have to meet in order to be able to do business in the country. The revised law raised the minimum capital for foreigners wishing to do business in the country from the previous US$300,000 to US$1 million either in cash or goods. Arguing that the law is inconsistent with the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Goods and People, the petitioners prayed the sub-regional court to intervene and stop Ghana from enforcing the legislation. The Nigerians cited the ministries of Trade and Industry (MOTI), Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and Justice and Attorney-General, as the respondents. The AG’s department, therefore, filed a response praying the court to dismiss the petition. A source at the A-G’s department told Myjoyonline, the court gave its verdict, dismissing the petition on Friday, November 15, 2013. Myjoyonline

Basic strategies for Parenting Exploring your natural and learned parenting tools Doris Osei Bonsu, Crisis Counselor, Toronto

By Golda Abena Quayson

Parenting is a tough job. There are no quick fixes, answers, or recipes for parenting, but I believe most of us have the tools we need to be good parents if only we could explore ourselves and rediscover them. We acquired or learnt these parenting from so many sources and from years of experience. Some of the sources may have been our parents, grandparent, siblings, and extended family, culturally as well as from the society we live in. Some of these tools may be good and appropriate whilst others are not. As a parent, to secure the strategies of good parenting we need to identify and be aware of the inappropriate, ineffective, or destructive tools that we are using. To identify the tasks of parenting one may question what is my parenting philosophy? You also need to have a goal in parenting which of course is to influence and empower your children or to control them and make them think and behaviour the way you want. I want us to pose a few questions to ourselves as a way of discovering whether our parenting tools or tactics are the appropriate ones. Our greatest parenting challenge is with teenagers or early adults. I wish to elaborate on five secrets ways for handling difficult teen/ young adult situations. The most common issues between parents and teens arise due to poor communication, power struggles and a lack of empathy. You cannot use the same parenting methods that you used when your teenage son or daughter was a child. Recognizing that they are no longer children shows them that you are showing them respect and giving them credit for their intelligence. If you continue to treat them as children, you won’t get positive results. You’ll just be exhausting your energy. There are five secrets to help you move from conflict to cooperation. Connect: Connection is everything. You do that by having rapport. It’s easy to be in rapport when you like your teen. We know

your teen know you feel their pain or their joy. Experiencing empathy feels like receiving a hug. Without it, we feel empty and alone. Empathy enhances self-worth and builds harmonious and trustful relationships.

that teenagers are often difficult to like. Did you know that liking someone is not a prerequisite for rapport? The ability to find something likable, however, is necessary. To develop rapport, focus on something you can appreciate about your son or daughter. It can be a physical trait (eye color or bright smile), character trait or talent you can admire. If that feels hard, think back to when your child was an infant or toddler. Focusing on a positive aspect of your teen will build connection and prepare you for your next interaction. Then, notice the difference as you feel more connected and in accord with each other. Listen - Before you can be a good listener, you need to be willing to get more information. When you listen without being attached to your own point of view, you can become open and less defensive. In dealing with teenagers you need to have what we call active listening skills. In having a discussion or even argument with teenagers, you need to listen consciously without interrupting. Resist the impulse to dismiss their feelings or give unsolicited advice. Be interested in your teen; don’t make the conversation about you. That would be a turnoff, and over time, you would run the risk of turning your teenager further away, and he/she will eventually be looking for family and “love” in all the wrong places. Empathy - Many arguments and much strife would be avoided if you take a moment to step into teens’ shoes, to learn how they perceive their situation. Then, empathize right away. This ability to truly hear and seek to understand them lead them to feel heard and values. Let

Acknowledge Acknowledge your teen’s thoughts, feelings, or complaints; this does NOT mean that you are agreeing with them! You are simply and effectively connecting to them by validating what you heard. Some of you might be tempted to skip this step, so strong is our “need to be right.” Don’t do it! Children need to feel heard so that they know it’s safe to talk to you. Empathy together with acknowledgement magically combines into a healing balm for the child in the “pain of anger.” Even out-of-control children will begin to let go of their resistance. Request - In coaching teens to success, there is an emphasis on making requests vs. demands. A request is asking someone to do something. When you demand, you paint yourself into a corner. If a demand is declined, it can cause damage to the relationship. Why? Because the biggest stumbling block you’ll run into relates to being controlling. Control leads to resentment and resistance, not cooperation. What happens when a child crosses into the daunting territory of adolescence? For too many parents, the answer is deeply troubling: the son or daughter they thought they knew turns into a sullen stranger who criticizes their taste, challenges their rules, and rejects their values. Some parents react by laying down the law and punishing any transgression, however minor. Others respond by throwing up their hands and hoping for the best. Sadly, either approach – “Do as I say” or “Do what you want” cuts off the possibility of communication with the most significant grownups in a young person’s life. Parents will discover cont'd on pg. 65

Exploring the Real Meaning to the Christmas Holidays

It’s almost here again!! The annual Christian and world-wide celebration called Christmas. The time and run-up to Christmas is very busy with the hustle and bustle of preparations: shopping, gathering of family and friends, wrapped gifts under trees, sent in the mail or delivered personally, church services, bright decorative lights and parties (public and private). But what is the real meaning of Christmas that generates so much activity, stress, happiness and if we should add, debts? What do we look for in Christmas? Is it the gifts under the tree, the lights in the windows, the cards in the mail, turkey dinners with family and friends, snow in the yard, and shouts of “Merry Christmas” to those who pass by us in the streets? There is the tendency for many of us to rush around madly trying to buy the right gifts etc., and generally run around until we practically fall down from exhaustion. Is this the way it is supposed to be? Shouldn’t we be enjoying the spirit of the season- the joy of gathering with family and friends and reflecting on why we are celebrating? We should also bear in mind that for many people Christmas is a time of sorrow. They don’t have the extra money to buy presents for their children, family, and friends. Many are saddened at Christmas time when they think of their loved ones who will not be able to come home for various reasons. Turkey dinners may be only a wish and not a reality for some. Yet, Christmas can be a season of great joy. It is a time of God showing His great love for us. It can be a time of healing and renewed strength. And on the religious (Christian perspective), Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of the Christ child. God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to be born. His birth brought great joy to the world. Shepherds, wise men, and angels all shared in the excitement of knowing about this great event. They knew this was no ordinary baby. The prophets had told of His coming hundreds of years before. The star stopped over Bethlehem just to mark the way for those who were looking for this special child. Let us try to focus on finding the real meaning and significance of the Christmas seasn and its attendant celebration. Here are some things we can do to give the real meaning of the Christmas holidays: 1. Appreciate why we’re here. In case we forget, and sometimes it’s hard not to; we’re not here to consume, spend and use up. It is true we live in materialistic times but with the world economy changing and prices rising, it’s time to step back and re-evaluate. Do we really need to buy on impulse? Do we need one hundred pairs of shoes? We’re actually here to experience, enjoy and share with each other. Yes

we can exchange meaningful and appropriate gifts, but we don’t have to overdo it. We can take our time and be sensitive to what the person needs or will get genuine joy from. 2. A p p r e c i a t e e a c h o t h e r. Rather than focus on what your family or friends might want, focus on who they are and what they mean to you. When he was on the Oprah show promoting his book For One More Day, Mitch Albom talked about what you would say to someone deceased if you had one more day to spend with them. It certainly wouldn’t be about the gifts you bought them or how much money you spent. 3. B e d e l i b e r a t e a n d m a k e every moment count. Our lives are busy. There is no question about it. During the holidays make the conscious decision to savor every moment. Who knows how many of you will be around for future gatherings? Parents’ age, circumstances change, life moves forward. You never know what next year will bring. Make the most of the time you have together. 4. B e k i n d a n d c a r i n g . The holidays are not pleasant for everyone. There are many who don’t have much and will find themselves lacking at this time of the year. Donate coats, food and money to the less fortunate. Don’t just give to those who have much, give to those who don’t. You’ll feel so good about doing it, better than you can imagine. 5. Be grateful and reflective. As mentioned, this time of the year is busy and demanding, however the real purpose of the holidays is not to run around finding the coolest gifts and to rack up the credit cards. It is to assess, reflect and be grateful for the freedom and abundance we have. Take the time to listen to the beautiful Christmas chorus, the gorgeous decorations and be thankful for everything. During this Christmas season make the conscious decision to enjoy the many spiritual gifts the season bring; the joy, the laughter and the sharing with family and friends. Understand that not everyone is as fortunate as we are and make every effort to help those that aren’t. Doing so will advance your compassion, understanding and ultimately your personal development. This Christmas season could be better spent in sharing in each other’s joy, laughter and spirit. It’s never too late to get back to the real meaning of giving and receiving.

Effective weight training depends on proper technique. Follow these do’s and don’ts to maximize your weight training program. You don’t have to be a bodybuilder or professional athlete to reap the benefits of weight training. When done correctly, weight training can help you lose fat, increase your strength and muscle tone, and improve your bone density. If done incorrectly, however, weight training won’t give you these benefits — and may even lead to injury. Check your technique You might learn weight training techniques by watching friends or others in the gym — but sometimes what you see isn’t safe. Incorrect weight training

For most people, a single set of 12 repetitions with the proper weight can build strength just as efficiently as can three sets of the same exercise. As you get stronger, gradually increase the amount of weight. * Use proper form. Learn to do each exercise correctly. The better your form, the better your results — and the less likely you are to hurt yourself. If you’re unable to maintain good form, decrease the

Follow these tips to avoid common mistakes when you’re weight training: * Don’t skip the warmup. Cold muscles are more prone to injury than are warm muscles. Before you weights, warm up with five to 10 minutes of brisk walking or other aerobic activity. * Don’t rush. Move the weight in an unhurried, controlled fashion. Taking it slow helps you isolate the muscles you want to work and keeps

you from relying on momentum to lift the weight. * Don’t overdo. For most people, completing one set of exercises to the point of fatigue is typically enough. Additional sets may only eat up your time and contribute to overload injury. * Don’t ignore pain. If an exercise causes pain, stop. Try it again in a few days or try it with less weight. * Don’t forget your shoes. Shoes with good traction can keep you from slipping while you’re lifting weights. safe, so long as it doesn’t prevent the baby’s legs from bending up and out at the hips – a position that allows for the natural development of hip joints. The legs must not be tightly wrapped, he wrote. He noted nine of 10 infants in North American are now swaddled in the first six months of

life, and demand for swaddling clothes soared by 61% in the U.K. between 2010 and 2011. Swaddling is used to soothe a baby and help them sleep, but pulling the blanket around the baby too tightly could cause hip misalighment, which could turn into osteoarthritis later in life, Clarke said. Painkiller found to cause behavioural problems Children who are exposed to acetaminophen for 28 days or more in the womb are more likely to have behavioural problems than children not exposed to the commonly u s e d p a i n k i l l e r, a new study has found. They also tend to have worse gross motor and communication skills, researchers found. In a collaborative study published in the International Journal

of Epideminology researchers from the University of Oslo, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto looked at 3,000 pairs of siblings – one sibling had been exposed to paracetamol (or acetaminophen), and one had not. The study found in a mother took acetaminophen – which is considered safe to

use during pregnancy – fewer than 38 times, the problems still existed, but not to the same extent. Researcher Hedvig Nordeng of the University of Oslo said the research only makes the connection and does not say why acetaminophen c a n a ff e c t a c h i l d ’s development, adding pregnant women should follw the advice of their doctors. Pope Francis calls for power to move away from Vatican

Pope Francis has called for power in the Catholic Church to be devolved away from the Vatican, in the first major work he has written in the role. In the document, he says he is open to suggestions to changes in the power of the papacy. He also warns that rising global economic inequality is bound to explode in conflict. Since becoming Pope in March, Francis has struck a markedly different tone to his predecessor on several issues.

The new document did not address some of the key ethical reforms called for by Catholic progressives and ruled out any change in the Church’s teaching on abortion or the exclusion of women from the

priesthood. However, the Pope has already set up an advisory council of eight cardinals who are due to gather in Rome for their second plenary meeting next week.

He has also set up new mechanisms for reform of the Vatican bureaucracy. the main thrust of Pope Francis’ pontificate, as outlined in this document and in his many homilies, is that he wants to see a less Vatican-centred Church whose greatest concern is for the poor and the marginalised, victims of an unjust global economic system that puts profit before people. In addition, Pope Francis says that ties with Islam have taken on great importance for the Catholic Church because of the growing number of Muslim immigrants now residing

Pope Francis in many traditionally Catholic countries. “We Christians,” he says, “should embrace Muslims with affection and respect in the same way that we hope and ask to be respected in countries of Islamic tradition.” In his “apostolic exhortation”, Pope Francis said he preferred a Church that was “bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security”.

BBC’s David Willey reports from Rome. It represents an ambitious programme to try to rekindle his church’s missionary zeal, our correspondent says. However, the document reiterates the Church’s opposition to the ordination of female priests, saying this is “not a question open to discussion”.

The document also touches on interfaith relations, urging Christians to “embrace with affection and respect The document suggests Muslim immigrants to major changes are on the way, with Francis noting that the Church has to get over an attitude that says: “We have always done it this way,” the

on modern family life and sexual ethics. The document does restate the Church’s opposition to abortion but concedes that “it is also true that we have done little to adequately accompany women in very difficult situations,... especially when the life developing within them is the result of rape or a situation of extreme poverty”.

Last month Pope Francis held his first meeting with a special group of cardinals to consider ways to reform the Vatican bureaucracy after saying in a newspaper interview that the Vatican had become too self-interested and needed to be inclusive. “Who can remain unmoved Continue reading the b e f o r e s u c h p a i n f u l main story situations?” he asks. “Excessive centralisation, rather than proving helpful, complicates the Church’s life and her missionary outreach,” he says in the latest document.

Pope Francis also expands on his concerns about economic inequality. “Today we also have to say “thou shalt not” to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an economy kills,” he says, going on to castigate the “new idolatry of money”.

He also says he does not believe that the papacy “should be expected to offer a definitive or complete word on every question which affects the “I beg the Lord to grant Church and the world”. u s m o r e p o l i t i c i a n s who are genuinely T h i s m o n t h t h e disturbed by the state Vatican launched an of society, the people, unprecedented survey of the lives of the poor!” the views of lay Catholics he goes on. The former First Lady who delivered the address at the number one ranked school of international business based in Arizona, United States last Tuesday, said education is the most important means of equipping individuals with the necessary nationbuilding knowledge and skills hence the need for African countries

CIBC Mobile Banking now lets Canadians deposit cheques with their phones

New feature will save individual and small business clients time and provide faster access to funds CIBC, the first bank in Canada to launch a Mobile Banking App, today extended its suite of mobile banking innovations with eDeposit, a new feature that lets personal and small business clients deposit cheques to their CIBC account simply by taking a photo of the cheque with their mobile device. “The convenience of depositing cheques simply by taking a picture with your phone means you can make a deposit where, how and when you would like, which will save CIBC’s 11 million clients time and provide faster access to those funds,” said David Williamson Senior Executive Vice President and Group Head, Retail and Business Banking, CIBC. “Whether you are a small business owner with a handful of customer cheques at the end of day or an employee getting your weekly paycheque, you can literally make a deposit within seconds.” This innovation makes

CIBC the first of the major banks in Canada to offer Canadians deposit taking where, how and when they would like - in more than 1100 branches, over 3500 ABMs or from the comfort of their homes using their mobile devices. The CIBC eDeposit process is simple, q u i c k a n d e a s y. • Just open the CIBC Mobile Banking App and select the eDeposit feature. • Endorse the back of the cheque. • Take a picture of the front and back of the cheque. • S e l e c t t h e account to receive the deposit and enter the amount of the cheque. • Tap submit, wait for confirmation, and then mark the paper cheque as paid. • Retain the cheque for 5 days, and then destroy it.

Adding a mobile cheque deposit feature was the top request identified by CIBC clients, who deposit millions of cheques each year. As with all of CIBC Mobile Banking Apps, the CIBC eDeposit feature is safe and secure. None of the financial information is stored on your device and all wireless transmissions are securely encrypted.

In furtherance of efforts at strengthening the efforts of other African women cultural leaders to significantly impact the lives of their kind and children in Africa, and with support from the UN and AU, members of AQWCLN from 10 African countries later gathered in Accra in October 2012 to formalize the idea.

and was co-hosted by HRH Sylvia Nagginda, Queen of the Buganda Kingdom and HRH Best Kemisiga, Queenmother of the Tooro Kingdom under the Chief Host of H.E. Yoweri Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda. The conference which took place at Speke Resort Munyonyo in the outskirts of Kampala was under the theme; ”African Queens and Women leaders – A vehicle for social and economic empowerment of rural women and youth in Africa – Looking beyond 2015, the future we want.” The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Maama Abla Dzifa Gomashie, led a three-man Ghanaian delegation last month to the conference in Kampala where she played a dual role as the only Minister of State who fully participated and in her traditional capacity as a Queen herself (Maama Dzramedo I).

Let's Think Family - By Rev. Dr. Samuel Kisseadoo Men want beauty while women want honesty and integrity We are exploring a new series that deal with the fundamental needs of men and women, and what each gender wants in a relationship. I have already pointed out that these basic “needs” and “wants” characteristics, determine the primary desires of each man or woman in a marriage or love relationship. We started with emphasis on the first major difference: Men usually want (and really need!) sex in a marriage, while women normally want love and intimacy (closeness, sharing of heart and mind, touching, hugging for long periods etc.). I pointed out that for each difference, it does not mean that the other person does not need what his or her partner desires. We are referring to the overriding desires and wishes for each gender. We want to continue by exploring another major difference regarding beauty and honesty Men are naturally wired to be creatures of the eye, and therefore they desire

and focus very much on the physical beauty of women. The women on the other hand are wired by God to be creatures of the heart and emotions. Females therefore desire inner beauty, and always long for deeper qualities of honest hearts and a spirit of integrity in every man. Integrity means consistently doing what you said you would do without changing your character or attitude at anytime. NO WOMAN CAN THEREFORE LIVE WITH OR ENJOY ANY MEANINGFUL F E L L O W S H I P, RELATIONSHIP, OR MARRIAGE WITH ANY MAN WHO DOES NOT TELL THE TRUTH BY MOUTH OR/AND BY DEED, AND DOES NOT

KEEP HIS PROMISES IT DOES NOT MEAN T H AT A W O M A N CAN LIE AND BE EXCUSED. SHE MUST TELL THE TRUTH CONSISTENTLY AS WELL. IN SOME MARRIAGES THE W O M E N R AT H E R ARE THE LIARS. BUT HONESTY SEEMS TO BE A PROBEM FOR MANY M E N E S P E C A I L LY IN TERMS OF E X T R A - M A R I TA L S E X U A L A F FA I R S AND FINANCIAL D E A L I N G S . NO MAN CAN ALSO TRULY LOVE, ACCEPT, AND ENJOY ANY DEEP R E L AT I O N S H I P WITH ANY WOMAN OR FEMALE WHOM HE LOOKS AT AND DOES NOT FEEL ATTRACTED TO HER PHYSICALLY. THE MAN CAN STILL HAVE SEX WITH THE WOMAN BY BEING M E R E LY S T I R R E D BY THE WOMAN’S SEXUAL ORGANS OR THE NATURAL

SEX APPEAL THAT A U T O M AT I C A L LY FLOWS BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE OF THE OPPOSITE SEX. BUT THERE WILL BE NO GENUINE INNER LOVE AND COMMITMENT FOR A LASTING RELATIONSHIP. Some men get into close relationships with women who do not really appeal to them, and whom they do not genuinely love. In such cases they befriend or marry them with ulterior motives of using them for their selfish gains (financially, sexually, materially, domestically etc.) Several women do not care very well about their bodies (shape, size, smell, hair texture and style, skin, nails, etc.) and especially their manner, choice, and style of dressing, after they have settled in a marriage. This careless handling of women’s bodies happen frequently after the women are satisfied with the number of children they have obtained in the marriage. They do not allow sex, romance, and therefore beauty and looks of their body to become a priority anymore. That is a very unwise and dangerous recipe for the weakening of the attractive bond in any marriage. It sets the stage for the husband to be lured and attracted to other good looking women whom he could finally find himself spending more quality time with, rather than enjoying quality time with his wife and children. The worst part is that it opens wide doors for adultery that brews terrible unfaithfulness that can culminate in separation and divorce.

It does not mean that men should only focus on telling the truth and keeping their promises without caring for their bodies as well. Any good and decent man who is fit to become a GOOD husband, would not leave his fingernails to grow and become claws like an eagle, accumulate sweat by repeatedly wearing the same shirt or underwear for weeks, refuse to use lotion on his body till the skin appears to be that of a crocodile in the jungle, neglect to use deodorant under his armpit until the foul odor brings jubilant troupes of flies after him in the streets, allow his armpit to grow hairs like a tropical bush that harbors all kinds of insects, watches his moustache to do what it wants to do on his face until it looks like a broom, and then abandons his hair to be as unkempt as that of a homeless and mentally demented fellow in the Central Park of New York city! We should not forget that “cleanliness is next to godliness.” It is always advisable for every woman to ask and know the physical qualities that attracted her man to desire her for a romantic relationship, especially when they have married. Then she must make every effort to maintain those qualities. Our bodies change as we grow older, but a wise, clean, and elegant woman who really loves her beauty, and is committed to give her husband or mate a body to appreciate and enjoy, will make every effort to maintain an attractive body and physical appearance at all times. Every man must lay a strong foundation

of honesty and integrity right from the beginning of the relationship, from the day he proposed to the lady. The lady must reciprocate with the maintenance of her honest “yes” to the proposal, and become committed to her man at all times. Even if the woman shows some dishonesty in the relationship, you as the man must exhibit righteousness and strength in character as an able and trustworthy LEADER of your fiancée, or wife and children. It is immature and foolish for any man to resort to a life of deception, tricks, and lies as retaliation or means to cheat your wife, subdue her, or hinder her progress in any relationship. That is utter defeat for your manhood if you do that. In the same way, it a shameful defeat and disgrace for any woman to ignorantly or intentionally neglect good care of her precious God-given body as revenge to punish a man who would not love and care properly for her, or to hurt and annoy a husband who is siding with in-laws against her or flirting with another woman. Let us diligently maintain the right balance between inner and outer beauty in our relationships. R e v. D r. S a m u e l A . Bringing the Gospel to our Community By: Rev. Joseph Osei-Amoah THE TRANSFORMING POWER OF JESUS AND HIS WORD “Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. 15 And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. 16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: 18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.” 20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:14-21 NKJV) At a service in the synagogue in Nazareth, the Lord Jesus read a section of the book of the prophecy of Isaiah which I have copied above (Isaiah 61:1-2). The above prophecy which was given about seven hundred years before Christ was fulfilled in the ministry, death and resurrection of the

Lord Jesus. Our world is increasingly becoming a more dangerous place to live because humanity prefers to live independently from the will of God and His principles. Unfortunately, man refuses to believe the biblical account of the origin sin which resulted in physical and spiritual death and the near destruction of humanity at the time of Noah (Genesis 6-8) and the consequences of man’s refusal obey divine will as recorded in Genesis 11:6, “And the LORD said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.” This does not suggest that God detests unity among people, however, unity in rebellion against his will or living as if there is no God is a prerequisite for disaster no matter the level of intellectual and technological advancement. “For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself.” (Rom 14:7 NKJV) To bring transformation within the reach of fallen humanity, God sent His only Son to the world;

“16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. (John 3:16-17 NKJV) The Bible has records of numerous people whose lives were transformed by the Lord Jesus during His ministry such as Zacchaeus, a rich chief tax collector of Jericho who was eager to see Jesus of Nazareth about whom he had heard so much. He was despised by his own people for working for a foreign the occupying powerRome. His relationship with his own people was even worse for way he used his position to cheat his people to enrich himself. When the Lord Jesus saw the emptiness in the heart of that rich man, He offered to stay in his home during His visit to Jericho. To the amazement of the people who had gathered at the tax collector ’s home, Zacchaeus announced he was going to give half of all his possession to the poor and promised to give four times of the value of what he had taken from anyone by deceit. The very presence of the Son of God brought transformation to the greedy tax collector even before Jesus uttered a word. What made the difference was when the man addressed Jesus as Lord, indicating his faith in Him as the Son of God,

who came to seek and to save the lost. (Luke 19:1-10) The other biblical example I have space to include in this write up is Saul, a Pharisee and son of a Pharisee, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, a highly educated young man who was a student of the famous Jewish tutor Gamaliel (Acts 22:3). He was a Roman citizen (Acts 22: 29) and a very religious man who strongly believed Jesus was a deceiver therefore persecuted the early followers of Christ in Jerusalem. His name first appeared in Acts 7:58 as Saul, the young man who took care of the clothes of those who stoned to death Stephen, another young and dedicated follower of Jesus and a deacon of the church in Jerusalem. Saul who later preferred to be called Paul, the Greek version of his Hebrew name; admitted his involvement in the execution of Stephen in Acts 22:17-21. Prior to his transformation, he continued in Acts 8:1-3 to persecute the followers of Jesus by dragging off men and women from their homes to prison. Then in

I m p l i c a t i o n s Section 161 (1) of Act 462 states, “ Every branch, division or unit of the departments or organisations specified in the Eighth Schedule to this Act which has been established in the districts of Ghana and in existence on the coming into force of this Act, shall cease to exist in the districts. What that means, according to Dr Mahama, is that the new departments would now operate as part of the district assemblies as stated by Section 161 (2). Section 161 (2) states that “The members of staff of the branches, divisions or units of the departments or organisations

specified in the Eighth Schedule to this Act shall be transferred to the relevant departments of the district assembly and they shall form part of the local government service when established.”

Assembly of God Church (Affiliated with P.A.O.C.)

139 Millwick Drive

Dr Mahama further explained that the two letter words ‘in’ and ‘of’ were significant in positioning the departments as part of the district assemblies. What has been done so far? “We have formulated conditions of service and scheme of service for the 24 different classes of professionals in the service. Besides, guidelines for the establishment and integration, as well as the appointment of heads of departments have been developed and

are being implemented,” Dr Mahama stated. Currently, the Local Government Service, he indicated, was organising series of nationwide orientation programmes for the new decentralised departments in the districts to make their programmes and policies responsive to the needs of the district assemblies. The implementation has been challenging, especially in determining who will head the departments to be merged. Dr Mahama said to ensure fairness, heads of such department to be merged were required to apply for the position and the best selected to head the new department. Ghanaweb

God at the beginning of His ministry recorded in Luke 4: 14-21 continues to transform the lives of people throughout the world and also in nations where it is illegal to preach or tell others about Jesus as the Savior of the world. No law could resist the Lord from revealing Himself to people through visions and dreams as the Savior of the world. No wander even imprisonment or torture has not been able to force such people to deny Christ. The Holy Spirit is actively bringing transformation to the lives of people who trust in Jesus. No human being or institution, nor the powers of darkness can stop the gathering of millions of people whose hearts are yearning and reaching out for the eternal life. “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord” , and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” (Rom 10:9-10 NIV)

Acts 9, as he led a group of men with the approval of the High Priest to arrest any follower of Jesus in Damascus and bring them to Jerusalem for punishment, suddenly a bright light shown around him. He fell from his horse and heard a voice asking why he was persecuting Him. The moment the Lord identified Himself as Jesus, Saul addressed Him as “Lord” indicating his faith in Him as the expected Messiah and Savior. His life was transformed from a skeptic to a believer in Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit with the zeal to let Jewish non believers and the Gentile world know that Jesus of Nazareth was the promised the Messiah. The greater portion of the book of the Acts of the Apostles gives account of the zeal and dedication with which Paul testified from nation to nation to bring eternal life and hope to his generation and wrote most of the books of the New Testament. 2 Timothy 4:6-8 tells of his readiness to die for his faith in Christ. cont'd from pg. 44 how rewarding it can be to listen helpfully to their teenager’s concerns. Parents should express their own anger or irritation honestly but not hurtfully. Parents who use these simple strategies can notice a significant difference in the lives of families, through and beyond the turbulent teenage years. This supportive method will bring about more cooperation from children than all the yelling and

pleading in the world. It is friendly, and best of all, effective. It offers innovative ways to solve such common problems as how to listen to-and understand-your child’s concerns, how to have cooperation in your family-without nagging. As adults we need to be willing to make the sacrifices necessary to ensure that all the children in our care and community will be able to have what they need: proper

medical treatment; food; clothing, and shelter; opportunities to explore, grow, and nurtured in a safe environment. This is too much for one individual to do, but it is definitely possible if as a society or community we believe that our kids are worth it, worth the time, energy, resources, and the commitment necessary. Just saying we believe it is not enough; we must be willing to act on that belief as parents.

Ghanaian actress turns musician; launching album in USA After a long hiatus from the limelight, Esther Afua Yirenkyi, one of the lost Ghanaian actresses in the Ghana Movie Industry has resurfaced as a gospel musician. Esther ’s name disappeared on the radar of movie producers when she migrated to the United States of America to seek greener pastures. Before her migration, she was seen then as one of the budding talents who was ready to take over from the alreadyexisting-but-gradually fading away actresses. Esther who was discovered and recruited into the then vibrant theatre company; “Theatre Mirrors” based in Asylum Down in Accra by a legal luminary, Lawyer Captain Nkrabeah EffahDartey would launch her maiden album as a gospel singer on Saturday September 28, 2013 at 5171 Lawrence Place, Hyattsville MD 20781.

Like many others before her, Esther started singing at a young age, “I started singing at a tender age in the Church choir and later doing solos at churches. Music has always been a part of me, its in-built and the only set time is now”. The album titled “Songs of Praise (Ayeyi Nwom)” has soothing and soul inspiring songs which everybody can relate to.

Before she left Ghana, Esther was involved in stage acting for seven years when she joined Theatre Mirrors. She

Esther Afua Yirenkyi, made cameo appearances in the popular television serial ‘Kejetia’ which also featured the late Gilbert Karikari known in the series as Baffour, Koo Hia and Miliki Micool. She moved on to another television series “Small World” to play a lead role. Acting came to Esther as a natural thing. What shot her into the limelight was when she was casted by movie producer Harry Laud to play the leading character in the movie “Yaa Asantewaa”.

would be released soon. She co-founded ‘Asomafo’ group with Ebenezer Osae to propagate the word of God. She has since unearthed her real talent. She is part of the praises and worship team in Christ the King Presbyterian Church, Maryland, International Central Gospel Church, Redemption Temple, Maryland, Miracle Center, Maryland, as well as a performer in Divine Word Ministries Springfield, Virginia.

The movie made the headlines; therefore, Esther’s name became a household name in Ghana. She was offered another opportunity by the same producer in “Who Killed Okomfo Anokye” due to the success of the first movie.

Esther is a native of Akuapim, Adukrom in the Eastern Region of Ghana. She is the first of five siblings, three brothers and a sister, and blessed with a beautiful daughter named Ty r a A m a N y a m e .

Even as she embark on a journey to win souls for Christ through her ministration, she has not completely shunned movies as her latest movie shot and produced in Virginia titled “Benji God Got You Covered”

When asked about specificities she giggled and said, “I could write an encyclopedia, however, watch out for my upcoming movies because they would tell a lot of my stories.” Ghanaweb
