The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Tawiah III, has died in a London hospital after battling a short illness
With the formal announcement of his death in Accra, state of wailing and mourning is envisaged across the Ga State and the entire nation in the days ahead. The Ga Dzaasetse, N i i Te t t e h K w e i I I , confirming the death of the 20th Ga Mantse to some journalists at a briefing yesterday, said, “We want to say to you with all the sorrow in our hearts that a really mighty oak tree has had its roots blown off this earth.” He said details of arrangements for the interment of the late King Tackie Tawiah, who was known in private life as Dr Jo Blankson, would b e a n n o u n c e d l a t e r.
Present at the briefing were a corps of traditional luminaries of the Ga State, including the Gbese Mantse, Nii Adu Mensah Tackie, who is also the Head of the Teiko Tsuru We; the Ga Seitse, Nii Tetteh Ashong V, and an Elder of the Ga Dzaase, Nii Tackie Komme Hammond. According to Nii Kwei, King Tackie Tawiah was flown to London some time last year to undergo m e d i c a l t r e a t m e n t , Late King Tackie Tawiah III “but as God wanted it, he never made it”. passing had been rife long “We are here to let you before he was pronounced know that the Paramount dead by medical doctors Chief of the Ga State in London, according has kicked the bucket to the Ga Dzaasetse. honourably,” he said. Nii Kwei expressed the Rumours about the King’s hope that with the formal
announcement of King Tackie Tawiah’s death, the rumours would die, adding that people must learn to investigate and speak the truth at all times and not just say anything for the sake of freedom of expression. According to Ga history, King Tackie Tawiah is the fourth Ga Mantse since 1863 to have died while on the stool. His three immediate predecessors — King Tackie Tawiah I, King Tackie Tawiah II and Nii Amugi II — all died while occupying the stool. On June 11, 2006, King Tackie Tawiah, a royal from the Teiko Tsuru We, one of the four royal houses of the Ga
State, was installed as the 20th Ga Mantse to succeed Nii Amugi II. His installation was followed by a colourful coronation on April 14, 2007, the first time in Ga history that such a grand crowning ceremony had been held. His coronation had survived threats of mayhem and a court injunction after the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs had dismissed an ex parte motion for interim injunction by the acting Head of the Abola Piam We , J o s e p h Ya h a y a Addy, against the event, as it passed peacefully.
But that was not the end of what became a running battle over the legitimacy of the great grandson of the famous King Tackie Tawiah I, as his installation sparked a wave of disapproval from some members of the royal household who described him as an illegitimate occupant of the stool. Under the circumstances, some members of the opposing factions also nominated rival Ga Mantsemei, with the tall list including Nii Tackie Obli II, aka Henry Nii Ayitey Ayitey; Kelvin N i i Ta c k i e a n d N i i Tackie Adama Latse II, aka George Tackie. cont'd on pg. 41

Opinion/ Commentary Alarming Proliferation of Firearms in Ghana and the Rise of Gun Violence By: Kwabena Akuoko Catastrophic shooting incidents have in the past happened in such countries as Australia, S c o t l a n d , N o r w a y, Finland, etc. and more chronically in the United States. But never before has any particular killing occurrence reinvigorated the emotionally charged debate vis-àvis proliferation and trafficking of firearms and corresponding gun violence than the mid-December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, which claimed the lives of 20 young school children and 6 teachers. Rightly so, the debate is not only confined to the United States. International headlines suggest that the gun violence discussion has become global. Since the Newtown slaughter, which the gunman also killed his own mother and himself, the question remains, is any country, big or small, safe from gun carnage these days? Gun violence has increasingly become a global trend because of easy availability of firearms and my sense is that no country is currently immune from the problem. The overriding consensus among security and gun policy analysts is that increasing level of global armed conflicts have partly resulted in unprecedented proliferation and trafficking of firearms and of course, gun ownership and matching crimes in almost every corner of the world, and unfortunately, Ghana is no exception. A l t h o u g h Ghana does not have a history of armed conflict, which would have allowed weapons to indiscriminately fall into people’s hands, but experts familiar with security issues in the West African sub-region partly attribute the influx of firearms in the country to previous violent conflicts in neighbouring Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Proliferation of guns is thus a serious problem in Ghana, which needs to be better addressed before it gets out of hand. Arbitrary gun ownership and gun crimes are thus serious problems in our country. Incidents
of armed robbery have for example been on the rise lately partly because of easy accessibility of all sorts of weapons. Gun violence is a global phenomenon, but many people mistakenly assume that it is someone else’s problem. And while there have not been any mass shootings in Ghana, the law enforcement community is nevertheless repeatedly confronted with armed robbery incidents and other gun crimes. Ghana is thus not invulnerable to gun violence. Repeated armed robbery incidents in Accra, Kumasi and other urban areas and particularly on the highways are perfect reminders of Ghana’s susceptibility to gun crimes. Consequently, it is not surprising that the National Commission on Small Arms (NCSA) and Ghana Police to jointly call for farreaching gun control measures to address what they consider as a growing menace. The NCSA has particularly expressed concerns about easy availability of guns and strongly urged all security personnel to be extra vigilant at Ghana’s borders to help stop the proliferation and trafficking of weapons into the country. According to NCSA, about half a million guns are legally owned by civilians in Ghana, but there is of course no equivalent statistical information regarding illegally acquired firearms. What seems to be lack of cohesive numerical facts relative to weapon ownership then makes Ghanaians susceptible to gun crimes such as armed robbery or even potential mass shootings for example. My take is that the alarming nature of gun violence in other parts of the world strongly cautions us to take preventative measures to deal with the problem before it becomes too late. Admittedly, in Ghana, the problem is not on the same scale as in the United States or elsewhere, but it still necessitates serious attention. We have a responsibility to address the situation before it becomes uncontrollable. Aside from illegally owned firearms, locally manufactured
small weapons are also a huge part of the problem. Those who have studied arm proliferation and trafficking in the West African sub-region have identified a thriving underground small weapons manufacturing industry in Ghana. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime for example, Ghanaian gunsmiths have the expertise to manufacture pistols, multi-short revolvers and shotguns. Dr. Emmanuel Kwesi Aning, a security expert similarly contends that Ghana is renowned for production of small arms and there are approximately 2,500 gunsmiths in Brong Ahafo and Ashanti Regions alone. Dr. Aning further maintains that Ghanaian gunsmiths have developed gun making capability and reputation for good quality weapons that stand the test of time and match the performances of AK-47 assault rifles and similar firearms. This then calls for the strengthening of government’s control of the local firearms manufacturing industry to ensure that small arms are registered or accounted for, and do not proliferate. There is a clear and present danger of increasing abundance of weapons and matching gun crimes in Ghana lately and as a result, the government must come up with strict gun control measures to address the problem. After all, wherever there are more guns, there are more gun homicides. Ghana needs to act quickly to introduce stricter gun laws or tougher policies controlling private ownership of firearms. Tragic incidents such as the mid-December 2012 Newtown carnage and the 1996 Port Arthur massacre in Australia, both reportedly carried out by disturbed individuals or similarly, the dreadful shooting deaths of 16 school children and their teacher in Scotland in 1996 must all serve as wake-up calls for the Ghanaian authorities to take immediate and serious steps to address the disturbing trend of proliferation of weapons and increasing gun crimes in our otherwise peaceful nation.
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford ‘thankful’ for appeal decision Mayor vows to fight on, as brother calls decision ‘a great day for Toronto’ Toronto Mayor Rob Ford says he is “very thankful” for the favourable Divisional Court decision that will allow him to keep his job and carry on his work at City Hall. Late Friday morning, Ford held a brief news conference in which he gave his reaction to the decision that reversed a pending removal that had been ordered by a Superior Court justice in a conflict-of-interest case. Thanking his family, as well as city residents for their support in recent weeks and months, Ford said he planned to get back to the job he set out to do when elected as mayor. “Your kind words have inspired me to continue fighting on,” said Ford, who also indicated that he intends to seek an additional term as mayor in the next election. While the mayor may be pleased with the court’s decision, the conflict case may not yet be over. Clayton Ruby, one of the lawyers representing a Toronto resident who last year brought forward an application that Ford had violated the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act, said he will take the matter to the Supreme Court of Canada. “We believe that there are serious errors of law in the judgment, and we will ask the Supreme Court of Canada for leave to appeal to that court,” Ruby said Friday in a statement. “It must be acknowledged that such appeals are not easy, but this remains an important issue for all citizens.” The conflict case relates to Toronto resident Paul M a g d e r ’s c o m p l a i n t that Ford violated the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act during a council vote last year. In November, a Superior Court judge ruled that the mayor should be removed from office and his seat declared vacant. The Divisional Court ruled Friday, however, that a Superior Court judge “erred in finding” that the mayor had contravened the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act, according to the text of their decision. In a powerful moving inaugural speech, President Obama vowed to work for all sections of American society. The speech also covered his vision of the world and the relationship he hopes to build with the rest of the world. Earlier on Saturday January 19, which the President had declared as a National day of Service, President Obama rolled up his sleeves and donned gloves to join other volunteers in sprucing up a school similar to the way he spent the day before his first presidential inauguration in 2009.

New Jersey men sue Subway over short subs: What are the chances they will win? Remember last week when an Australian Subway patron posted a photo of his Footlong sub next to a ruler, revealing that it was only 11-inches long? It didn’t take long for pretty much the entire world of Subway eaters to whip out their rulers and discover that, low and behold, a lot of Subway sandwiches fall shy of the 12-inch mark. But while most customers expressed their outrage by making jokes, two men from New Jersey are lawyering up and have filed a class action lawsuit against Subway for selling them a product that was not as large as advertised. John Farley and Charles Noah Pendrack approached lawyer Stephen DeNittis after reading about the short sandwiches, reports the Associated Press. DeNittis went out and measured sandwiches fro m 17 s hops and says every single one was less than a foot long. “Can you bring a case like this? Sure. Is it likely to go to trial? No,” says Toronto class action lawyer Matt Baer. Baer says cases like this will sometimes settle just to make the bad publicity go away.
“You’re not going to give everyone back their few cents,” says Baer. “Cases like this are often settled with some sort of coupons, or they might arrange for days when they give away free subs.” The suit asks for compensatory damages and a change in the chains’ policies, so that sandwiches are either are a full foot long or are not advertised as such. TODAY reports the men seek to regain losses of 5 to 8.3 per cent on sandwich purchases. They’re asking for triple damages, which works out to about $1.23-$1.62 per sub. The class action lawsuit is for anyone in New Jersey who bought a footlong from January 22, 2007 to present. “The case is about holding companies to deliver what they’ve p r o m i s e d , ” D e N i t t i s t e l l s A P. Also see: Would you try influenza sorbet? Not surprisingly, the Twitterverse deemed the lawsuit worthy of being mocked. “If NYers win lawsuit against Subway,
I have some makers of ‘Fun Sized’ candy bars on my lawsuit list,” write Matt Kalman @TheBruinsBlog. Vi n c e . H . @ A m e r i c a n m a d e 6 5 writes “Subway is being sued because their footlong sub isn’t 12 inches long. My girlfriend filed a similar lawsuit against Me.” Others were left inspired. Ben White @morningmoneyben tweets “In light of the Subway foot-long lawsuit, I am totally suing McDonalds over the ‘quarter pounder.’ Because, yeah right.” Also see: French restaurant charges $112 for meal made of dirt White does raise an interesting question though: Has McDonald’s or any other fast food chain ever been sued over the size claims of their products? Or is this the beginning of a humongous legal battle over light
quarter pounders and slender burritos? Baer says there are far more lawsuits like this in the U.S., because in Canada, if you lose a class action lawsuit, you have to pay the defendant’s legal costs. The U.S. doesn’t have that rule, so there’s little to lose in suing. For example, Taco Bell was recently sued with the claim that their filling was only 35 per cent beef. The Mexican food chain won that case and launched a massive advertising campaign demanding an apology from the plaintiffs. In the Subway lawsuit, Baer says there is a small chance evidence could surface that would give the case weight, as lawyers gain access to internal documents. “What would be ideal is to find some sort of internal memo saying we’re purposely going to shrink our subs to make a bunch of money,” says Baer. “But I certainly wouldn’t touch this case in Canada without something like that.” Yahoo

Mali crisis: US admits mistakes in training local troops The US military commander in Africa says the Pentagon made mistakes in its training of Malian troops now trying to oust Islamist rebels from the north. Gen Carter Ham of United States Africa Command (Africom) said its forces had failed to train Malian troops on “values, ethics and a military ethos”. Militant groups took advantage of an army coup last year to extend their control over a vast area of the Sahara. Meanwhile, air strikes
have been reported near the northern city of Gao. The militant stronghold came under fire as the military operation entered its third week. Islamist fighters seized the north of Mali last year and have imposed a strict interpretation of Sharia, or Islamic law, on its inhabitants. France intervened militarily on 11 January to stop them advancing further south. However, human rights groups have since accused Malian troops of killing
Arabs and ethnic Tuaregs as they advance north. The claims caused alarm in the West, particularly in the US, which has been training troops in Mali and neighbouring countries to tackle the militant threat for several years. Gen Ham said Malian troops were given plenty of tactical training, but not enough ethics training. “ We w e r e f o c u s i n g our training almost exclusively on tactical or technical matters,” he told a forum at Washington’s Howard
University on Thursday. Gen Ham: “We didn’t spend probably the requisite time focusing on values, ethics and a military ethos” “ We d i d n ’ t s p e n d probably the requisite time focusing on values, ethics and a military ethos.” The general said not enough was done to convince Malian recruits that “when you put on the uniform of your nation, you accept the responsibility to defend and protect that nation, to abide by
the legitimate civilian authority that has been established, to conduct yourselves according to the rule of law”. “ We d i d n ’t d o t h a t to the degree that we needed to,” he added Mali’s army staged a coup in March 2012. In the chaos which followed, Islamist militants and secular rebels extended their control of the whole of the north - an area of the Sahara Desert

FOCUS The Full Implementation of FCUBE in Ghana: Politicians Must Spare Us Their Divisive Attitude! Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference”
“
Asks Joe Kingsley Eyiah, OCT, Brookview Middle School, Toronto-Canada The news report from Ghana that the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has accepted the nomination of Professor Naana Opoku Agyeman for the position of Minister of Education by President John Dramani Mahama and thus, has expressed confidence in her competence to develop education in Ghana (Ghanaweb, January 15, 2013), to me, is good news! Though the presidential candidate for the 2012 elections of the PPP, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom failed to attended the inauguration of H.E. John D. Mahama as the President of Ghana recently, his (Dr. Nduom) Progressive People’s Party statement coming on the heels of President Mahama’s appointment of the right person to head
the Education Ministry in our dear country has demonstrated the Party’s political expediency and goodwill towards moving the education sector forward for national development. Even more encouraging is the Party’s recommendation t h a t t h e P r e s i d e n t ’s nominee if confirmed by the parliamentary appointments committee should be supported by the President to fully implement the Free and Compulsory Universal
Basic Education (FCUBE) program which was introduced in 1995. Ghanaians were promised free universal basic education by 2005. For almost 20 years now, successive governments have failed to fully implement the FCUBE as promised. It would be in the interest of our national development if the FCUBE would be fully implemented for the benefit of all Ghanaians by 2016 as promised by President Mahama during his election campaign. For the President to succeed with his promise on the FCUBE, he would need to put the right and competent people in the helm of affairs within the education sector to begin with. Maybe it is a good start with his appointment of the sector minister.
However, the President ought to look beyond party lines and fish for suitable and capable Ghanaians to help move the sector forward. A policy document on basic education improvement sector program put together by the government in 1996 to ensure Free and Compulsory Universal Basic Education (fCUBE) for all outlines government intentions for basic education in these words, “The Government is committed to making schooling from Basic Stage 1 through 9 free and compulsory for all school-age children by the year 2005. Through the components of its program for Free Compulsory and Universal Education, the Government of Ghana is committed not only to achieving universal access to basic education in ten years, but also to IMPROVING THE QUALITY O F E D U C AT I O N SERVICES OFFERED” (emphasis supplied). One can conveniently argue that we are yet to see any improvement in the quality of education offered at the basic level, if not at all levels, of education in the country since the implementation of such education reform. I am even afraid to credit our nation with universal free basic education for all since there are some communities which still do not have access to free education in the country. Such communities lack the basic facilities and resources such as classrooms, exercise books, chalk and trained teachers that could be described as ‘extrinsic motivation’ for the child to go to school! As a teacher in a developed country, I have had the opportunity to experience the success of true free compulsory basic education for children both in quantity a n d q u a l i t y. I n t h e designated needy or deprived neighborhoods
o f To r o n t o - C a n a d a , where I teach, there are community and model schools everywhere! Children of school going age therefore have no excuse to stay at home and parents /guardians are morally as well as legally obligated to put their children in school whether they are economically well-todo or not! Though there might be children who would prefer the streets to school, there are adequate provisions made for them at schools that attract them to such places of learning at the very early stage of their lives. Catch them young!! (Don’t dismiss my argument here for the fact that I now live and work in a developed country. The world has become a global village and we ought to learn from good examples everywhere! After all, with prudent management of the country’s natural and human resources, Ghana can do better than what the country has been able to achieve in education so far! God bless our homeland Ghana!) There is an urgent need for revamping the resources at the kindergarten and primary schools at the basic level to establish quality foundation for the country’s education system. Adequate learning and teaching materials MUST be provided in the classroom at that level to ensure effective learning and teaching process. Also, teachers who are undoubtedly the ‘oil which grease the wheels of any education reforms’ must be well prepared for our primary schools throughout the country to facilitate learning and
smooth transition for students from the primary to the junior secondary school. This calls for the involvement of the education committees at the district assemblies in effectively recruiting potential and capable teachers for training at the Teacher Training Colleges and their subsequent postings to primary schools in the districts. The programs at the Teacher Training Colleges must also be made to address the needs of teaching in our primary s c h o o l s e ff e c t i v e l y. Wi t h t h e a d e q u a t e preparation of teachers, well equipped classrooms and effective supervision of teaching at the basic education level Ghana will be on track to solving the problem of poor results of the Junior and High School Certificate Examinations i n t h e c o u n t r y. A critical look at the manifestos of all the political parties that contested the 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections in the country reveals an interesting trend of promises to the citizenry on development of education in the country. All promised to implement free and quality basic education in Ghana. Now that a new person (welcomed by all as competent and capable) has been appointed to handle the education sector, all politicians must show goodwill and help her to success in the full implementation of the Free and Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) in the country. The politicians must spare us their divisive attitude this time around!

Historic New Immigration Giorgio Mammoliti spent Program to Attract Job more than $12,000 over his Creators to Canada 2010 campaign limit: audit Minister Kenney Announce New StartU p Vi s a , F i r s t o f its Kind in the World Toronto, January 24, 2013 — Canada will launch a brand new program on April 1 to recruit innovative immigrant entrepreneurs who will create new jobs and spur economic growth, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney a n n o u n c e d t o d a y. “Our new Start-Up Visa will help make Canada the destination of choice for the world’s best and brightest to launch their companies,” said Minister Kenney. “Recruiting dynamic entrepreneurs from around the world will help Canada remain competitive in the global economy.” T h e S t a r t - U p Vi s a Program will link immigrant entrepreneurs with private sector organizations in Canada that have experience working with start-ups and who can provide essential resources. The Program is part of a series of transformational changes to Canada’s immigration system that will make it faster, more flexible and focused on Canada’s economic needs. As a way to help these in-demand entrepreneurs
fulfil their potential and maximize their impact on the Canadian labour market, they will require the support of a Canadian angel investor group or venture capital fund before they can apply to the Start-Up Visa Program. Initially, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will collaborate with two umbrella groups: Canada’s Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (CVCA) and the National Angel Capital Organization (NACO). These groups will identify which members of their associations will be eligible to participate in the Program. CIC is also working with the Canadian Association of Business Incubation to include business incubators in the list of eligible organizations as soon as feasible. “CVCA is honoured to partner with the Government of Canada in the launch of the StartUp Visa Program,” said Peter van der Velden, President of the CVCA and Managing General Partner of Lumira Capital. “Through this Program, we want to attract highquality entrepreneurs from around the globe and help build best-in-class companies in Canada.” “We’re excited to be a part of the Start-Up
Visa Program,” said Michelle Scarborough, Board Chair of NACO. “Working with CIC and angel groups across the country, this initiative will create Canadian jobs and position Canada as a leader in innovation.” The Start-Up Visa is the first of its kind and will be a powerful incentive to attract individuals with great potential who will have a real impact on the Canadian economy. By providing sought-after immigrant entrepreneurs with permanent residency and immediate access to a wide range of business partners, Canada will position itself as a destination of choice for start-ups. Linking forward-thinking immigrant entrepreneurs with established private sector organizations is essential to the success of both investors and entrepreneurs in building companies that will compete globally and create Canadian jobs. “Jobs, growth and long-term prosperity remain priorities for the Government of Canada, and this new Start-Up Visa Program underscores our commitment to supporting innovation and entrepreneurship in the Canadian labour market,” Minister Kenney concluded. Councillor Mammoliti says campaign overspending allegations ‘disagreement’ between auditors
Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti responded Tuesday to allegations that his 2010 campaign overspent by more than $12,000, saying he has been “caught in the middle” of a disagreement between two auditors.
Mr. Mammoliti said his campaign acted in accordance with advice from his auditor, Bernard Nayman, who has provided electionfinance services to various levels of government for more than two decades.
right now everybody’s speculating and saying all kinds of things, but if you look at how simple these two disagreements are by two different auditors, you can see very clearly that it really is about a different opinion between two auditors,” Addressing last week’s “Speculation can be the Mr. Mammoliti said. audit allegations for the worst thing that anyone “It isn’t about the first time in an interview can go through, and candidate.” National Post with the National Post,

A forensic audit of Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti’s 2010 election books has found his campaign overspent by more than $12,000, an “apparent contravention” of the Municipal Elections Act. Mr. Mammoliti, a staunch Ford supporter until recently quitting the mayor’s executive committee, spent $39,530 on his successful bid to retain the north end seat of Ward 7 (York West). That is $12,065 over his allowable amount, Froese Forensic Partners concluded in a 43-page report that has been submitted to the city’s compliance audit committee. Auditors Bruce Armstrong and Glen R. Davison identified a number of other apparent contraventions that relate to contributions, campaign expenses and financial reporting. The audit was ordered by the threemember committee after a retired Toronto teacher lodged a number of allegations against the councillor regarding his campaign finances. Auditors have also been asked to pore over Mayor Rob Ford’s campaign books but their findings have not yet been released. The committee will discuss Mr. Mammoliti’s audit at a Feb. 4 meeting and it can choose to commence legal proceedings. If a prosecution finds the councillor to have contravened the Municipal
Elections Act, he could face a fine, be ousted from office and banned from running until the next regular election. Mr. Mammoliti won Ward 7 with 5,338 votes, about 1,700 votes more than his next closest competitor. The councillor did not respond to a request for comment but the audit report cites “accounting issues” raised by his lawyer, Jack Siegel, that arose from dividing up expenses between an aborted run for mayor and the subsequent councillor campaign. Other apparent violations uncovered by the auditors include donations from one individual that exceeded the $750 limit, receipts that don’t match the name reported for the contribution, unpaid office rent constituting an in-kind donation of $768.40, wrong reporting for brochures, inadequate record-keeping and omitting or misallocating expenses paid for by a personal credit card. David DePoe, the teacher who asked the committee to order the audit, considers the revelations to be “very serious.” “Spending 44% above the limit seems to be a pretty high level. It doesn’t seem to be an inadvertent oversight,” said Mr. DePoe. “It’s important for elections to be fair and follow the rules. If you overspent, it gives you a leg up on your opponents.” National Post

Many inhabitants of urban slums in West African have been rendered homeless by governments that have carried out numerous demolitions of slum houses. In Nigeria for instance, a report from Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE) shows that over 2 million people were rendered homeless as a result of demolition. Violations of Human Rights Global Survey No. 10 show that 800,000 persons were rendered homeless in Abuja by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) as a result of demolition. Demolition displaced about 15, 000 persons in the Ago-Egun Ilaje area of Lagos. Over 100,000 inhabitants of Makoko were rendered homeless as a result of demolition that was carried out in the area by Lagos state government. In the same trend, Rivers State Government dispossessed about 5,000 to 10,000 people of their homes at the Agip Waterside Community in Port-Harcourt and also rendering about 1.2 million people homeless in Rainbow Town, Port Harcourt by demolition their houses. The Ogoni people were described as some of the worst affected. The same trend continues as the Abuja administration organises to knock down 19 villages within it. These include Mudashiru
Slum Demolition and the Urban Poor
Idu, Karmo-Dape, Tasha, Gwagwa, Suburi, Zauda, Jahi, Gishiri, Mabushi, Mpape, Kuchigoro, Chika, Aleita, Piwoyi, Lugbe, Pyakassa, Tudunwada, Dei-dei and Guzape. The Federal Capital Administration (FCDA) has revealed that 10,000 houses will be demolished and 300,000 persons rendered homeless by this exercise.
Philip Kumah, writing on his blog http:// philipkumah.wordpress. com/, said the meeting was attended by people from the following slums: Abuja (CMB), Agbogbloshie, Avenor, Chorkor, King Shona (James Town Beach), Old Fadama, Railways (ECOMOC– Circle), Taboo (Ashaiman), Tulako (Ashaiman), and Zongo Laka (Ashaiman).
The trend continues in Liberia, as Montserrado District 7, in central Monrovia was demolished and the number of inhabitants with an estimated 10000 rendered homeless. In Accra, Ghana, the Metropolitan Assembly demolished over 1,000 houses at Odawna, leading to the displacement of over 80,000 inhabitants in Old Fadama community. In Douala, Cameroon, settlements have been demolished, spilling many into street corners, though the actual figure of those that were rendered homeless as a result of this exercise is yet to be ascertained.
The pattern of demolitions across the West African Sub-Region appear to be the same. The exercises are executed with government-backed task forces pulling down houses with the support of armed law-enforcement officers. The inhabitants of the area stand a chance of being killed by the law enforcement officers if they attempt to put up resistance. The case of Makoko is a good example where a policeman, Peple Boma, shot and killed Timothy Hunpoyanwa, a community leader, when he attempted to resist the demolition of the area by the Lagos state government. In the Old Fadama settlement of Accra, the Metropolitan Assembly went to demolish the area with over 40 police officers; nearly all of them were heavily armed. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) policy on the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) should be enough to put this practice to a stop
In reaction to the ongoing demolitions in Ghana, Accra slum dwellers formed the Slum Union of Ghana, as an umbrella body to promote the economic, social and cultural rights of slum inhabitants, as well as serve as a formidable and united voice for slum inhabitants across Ghana. The governments of all the above-mentioned countries have violated international, regional and local instruments which they are parties to, such as the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Shelter is both a human need and a basic right. Where demolition of human settlements occurs without due process, it is regarded as forced eviction or enforced homelessness and violates the prohibition against cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment. Also in the international human rights law, corroborated
by the African Charter as mentioned above, evictions can only be seen as lawful if they are considered to be necessary mainly in “exceptional circumstances.” And when such “exceptional circumstances” are real, due process has to be followed which includes States are in obligation to ensure before evictions that all possible alternatives are worked out together with the persons affected. This includes the provision of alternative resettlement plan and compensation for the affected persons, a key missing link in all the demolitions that have taken place in the region. Likely fallout from these demolitions is an upsurge in crime rates in the affected countries further escalating the fragile security experienced in the region’ urban cities. The Nigerian state is battling with Boko Haram in three of its six geopolitical zones, the North West, North
Central and North East. Kidnapping and armed robbery are not uncommon in the South East and South South, while armed robbery is prevalent in the South western part of the country. These demolitions are likely to compound the insecurity in the country as the affected persons see themselves as victims of society and thus will not hesitate to resort to violence and criminality. Another implication of these demolitions will be an upsurge in commercial sex work, exploitation and trafficking with an attendant increase in the incidence of sexual transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV/ AID. Health implications arising from these demolitions are not just limited to STIs but extend to outbreak of communicable diseases such as cholera. Dental care access too unequal, say pediatricians Publicly funded plans for Canadian children limited, despite benefits of preventive care dental care regardless of where they live or their family’s income, say pediatricians c o n c e r n e d a b o u t t o o t h d e c a y. Children with rotting baby teeth or “early childhood caries” can suffer poor growth, behavioural problems, poor learning, and sleep loss, the Canadian Pediatric Society said in a report Friday. The problem often requires surgery under general anesthesia and is the most common surgical procedure performed in preschoolers at most pediatric hospitals in the country, the group said. Diet, bacteria, social factors like income, prolonged bottle feeding and drinking too much juice all contribute but the decay can be prevented, the pediatricians said. “Publicly funded provincial/territorial dental plans for Canadian children are limited and show significant variability in their coverage,” wrote Dr. Anne Rowan-Legg, a member of the group’s community pediatrics committee. “There is sound evidence that
preventive dental visits improve oral health and reduce later costs, and good evidence that fluoridation therapy decreases the rate of dental caries, particularly in high-risk populations.” Ye t C a n a d a r a n k s s e c o n d l a s t among members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in public financing of dental care, the pediatricians noted. Within the country, children and youth from low-income families in most provinces are eligible for basic dental coverage up to age 18, but in Nova Scotia, the coverage ends at age 10. The programs also tend to focus on treatment instead of preventative care. The society recommendations for provincial, territorial and federal governments include: Ensure all children are afforded equal access to basic treatment and preventive oral care, regardless of where they live or their family’s socioeconomic status. Support fluoride supplementation. Child health-care providers receive training and education in oral health, with an emphasis on early risk assessment. CBC News

Wishing God’s Speed: Ref: I will not let Ghana down – Prez. Mahama assures
Dr. Kwaku A. Danso
Fellow countrymen, We should never forget that no matter the contentions, Ghana must move on as one nation, even as the opposition aggrieved party is exercising their constitution and legal right to appeal the decision of the Electoral Commissioner in the last elections at the Supreme Court. I wrote this for the E d i t o r i a l o f w w w. GlobalExpressGhana. com and wish to share here: No matter the outcome of the Supreme Court ruling a week or more away, we wish the new sworn-in President John Mahama all the best of luck. We wish that he will work hard to focus and implement the vision he has expressed with all intense mind and heart, and not leave it to his delegates and go to sleep. The nation has been on a treacherous journey in the last three d e c a d e s . We c a n n o t afford any let down. Ghanaians like the latest electronic and other gadgets, and the President is reported to enjoy some of the latest technologies. However, little does he and does our leadership seem to know and realize the intensity of vision in corporate and national leadership that facilitates the developments we all enjoy. Due to ignorant leadership, Ghana closed down our electronic
factories at a time when Singapore, Taiwan and others were courting American companies to build factories in their countries and help create jobs and teach them the real socio-economic game of life. Some of us who studied the modern technologies have all but used them to help other nations. Ghanaians in Ghana may not have learned to appreciate the overseas experience of their colleagues and uncles who left the shores for further education and could not return to find jobs in their chosen fields. However, one thing that we wish our leaders would know is the intensity of ideas or vision, hard work, and focus of some of the leaders of the Western nations we live in to accomplish set tasks for their people. For example, President Obama and the members of the US Congress and Senate were working through the Christmas holiday season in order to come to an agreed Budget to save their economy. Do we do this in Ghana? Why is the Supreme Court of Ghana taking so long to make a decision on this December 2012 election? Why can’t we change the election dates to accommodate any such eventualities? Why are funds for roads and highways, for water projects, for electricity, for housing and other projects never completed and no new government ever investigates? Does the Speakers of the

Ghana Parliament even study and investigate the annual Auditor Generals reports? What kind of people are we Ghanaians? With all the Churches in Ghana, will Manna come free from Heaven? It does not take 4-8 years on the job to commission and task subordinates to build and expand water treatment facilities so that our people in the cities and rural areas will get pipe-borne water. In 2004 to 2005 Ghana obtained a grant and a loan in the total amount of $603 million for such water projects. What did President Kufuor do with the money? Did President Mills ask this question when he came to office? Will President Mahama ask? It should not take but 6-12 months to commission and appoint experts to assess, purchase and install needed modern equipment to handle and distribute electricity to modern reliable standards of 99.99% or better on-time in city neighborhoods with over-choked electrical demand that causes total chaos. It is common knowledge that electricity interruptions cost massive damages in computer and household appliances in Ghana. The cost of Generators is further waste of resources that can be harnessed together and stop polluting the environment. Where is the $600 million in loans procured in the mid 2000s for electricity? It does not take but 3-6 months to sit down with engineers and planners and design a modern network of roads and highways for our capital city of Accra and other cities in Ghana, and to link them. It will not take perhaps another 2-3 years to build these to bring Ghana at par with the modern world. It does not take but 3-6
months to sit down with engineers, architects and city planners to design our cities and towns to eliminate open sewage and gutters. Open sewage breeds mosquitoes and takes the lives of an estimated 100,000 of our people every year. After the design and executive decision, it should not take but 4-8 years to make this a permanent culture in our society. Is John Mahama up to such tasks or he simply wants to talk the nice talk? Ghanaians are a very intelligent and proud people with generous hearts. Short of our cultural resistance to confront authorities, we are among the best people on earth. However, we cannot live at par with others in the modern world without a strong and effective leadership who will empower our people and allow local elections through decentralization as done in other democracies. All it takes is the design of a vision of our future, design the plan and do the arithmetic, and then share this with the people and show them how much each household will pay. We are smart enough to know nothing comes free and we cannot depend on foreigners forever. If so why do our leaders want to deceive the people? Can these be done under President Mahama? Those who know John Mahama will not deny he is a very nice, amicable and personable fellow, and he can do the talk. However whether he has the teeth to bite and instill discipline and get the job done is yet to be seen. No matter the outcome of the Supreme Court decision, we wish John Mahama good luck. May God bless Ghana and her people in need.

Ontario couple finds peephole in Mexican hotel suite bathroom Company agrees to reimburse vacationers An Ontario couple who found a peephole in the bathroom of their luxury hotel suite in Mexico say Transat Holidays has now offered to reimburse them for the cost of their vacation. Sarah Edwards and her husband, David Traccitto, discovered the peephole in the bathroom of their room at the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya resort near Playa del Carmen. The Bradford, Ont., residents travelled to Mexico to celebrate their anniversary and felt something was amiss shortly after checking in. “I just felt like someone was around me,” Edwards told CBC News. “I heard what sounded like a latch opening, a door opening, and then moments later, a door shutting.” Traccitto discovered a maintenance room that shared a wall with the bathroom of the suite. A hole concealed behind the glazed glass shower console allowed a clear view of the bathroom. Video taken by the couple and provided to CBC News shows paint on the glazed glass appears to have been chipped away. Couple moved to another room A f t e r m a k i n g t h e d i s c o v e r y, T r a c c i t t o and his wife made a hasty retreat. “He storms into the room and he’s like, ‘Oh, my God! Pack everything, pack everything up now!’” said Edwards. “You’re not just seeing part of the shower wall and some blue glaze,” said Edwards. “You’re seeing right through the glass, right through the blue glaze, right to genital level ... right in that shower. If the person is not in the shower, you can see directly into the king-size bed, the whole bed!” Edwards said she’s worried someone was watching them, and whether they took pictures or video. The couple stayed at the Mexican Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort near Playa del Carmen. The couple stayed at the Mexican Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort near Playa del Carmen. (Courtesy Sarah Edwards) “I thought, ‘My life is ruined.’ My personal life, my professional life, everything I’ve worked for in my life is gone.” The couple complained to the hotel, and moved to another room. As compensation, the couple received additional benefits, including free spa treatments. In a letter to the couple, tour operator Transat Holidays said the hotel had made a “goodwill attempt to resolve the issues” and said they considered the matter closed. Transat Holidays has agreed to reimburse them for the cost of the vacation, but the couple told CBC News they have not yet decided whether to accept the offer. CBC News

IMMIGRATION AND SOCIAL ISSUES By: James A. Kwaatemg, B.A. (Hons), LLB (Hons)
Newly Introduced Measures to Combat Marriage Fraud Sponsorships involving relatives like spouses, common-law partners and adopted children attract special attention because th e y ar e ar tif icially created relationships. It may be easy to determine the legal validity of such relationships but that may not be the case in determining the genuineness of such relationships. The Immigration Regulations state that persons who enter into a non-genuine marriage, common-law relationship, conjugal partnership or adoption in order to obtain permanent residence in Canada must be refused. But how do they determine the genuineness? It becomes necessary to consider the genuineness of relationships like marriages and adoptions only after the issue of legal validity of the claimed relationships has been determined. If the relationship has no legal validity, it would be pointless to determine issues pertaining to genuineness. In the course of determining the genuineness of marriage and marriage-like relationships, officers are likely to use several tools and factors among which
certain sponsored spouses to live in a legitimate relationship with their spouses for two years or risk losing their permanent resident status.
are: past immigration file records; the timing of the marriage; circumstances and duration of courtship; history of multiple marriages; significant degree of attachment; emotional and financial interdependency and general commitment to a shared life together. The likelihood of very genuine relationships being mistaken for relations of convenience or vice versa is always there. The immigration authorities have been doing everything reasonably possible to minimize incidents of fake marriages. In addition to a recentlyintroduced measure that prohibits sponsored spouses from sponsoring a new spouse for five years following the date they become a permanent resident, new regulations have been introduced effective October 26, 2012 that would require
The new regulations apply to spouses or partners in a relationship of two years or less and who have no children in common with their sponsor at the time they submit their sponsorship application. The sponsored spouse or partner must live in a legitimate relationship with their sponsor for two years from the day on which they receive their permanent resident status in Canada. The status of the sponsored spouse or partner may be revoked if they do not remain in the relationship. This regulation applies to applications which were received on or after October 25, 2012. These new measures do not necessarily confer on the sponsors the power and authority to mistreat their sponsored spouses or partners. The regulations include an exception for sponsored spouses or partners who might suffer abuse or neglect. The conditional measure would cease to operate in situations where there are clear instances of abuse or neglect by the
sponsor or where the sponsor fails to protect the sponsored and newlyarrived spouse or partner. The abuse or neglect is not confined narrowly to the sponsor. It could be perpetrated by the sponsor or a person related to the sponsor, whether or not the abusive party is living in the household or not during the conditional period. And, also, the conditional measure would not apply in the event of the death of the sponsor just as a sponsorship undertaking terminates the moment a sponsor dies. Conditional permanent residence is not anything
different from regular permanent residence. The only distinguishing feature is the need to satisfy the two-year requirement of the spouses living in a legitimate relationship under the conditional measure. This measure is not a new introduction in the western world. The regulations just bring Canadian policy in line with that of Australia, The United States and the United Kingdom. The Immigration views many cases of marriage and marriagelike relationships with suspicion because it is generally believed this is
an area of immigration that lends itself to falsification of facts and documentation. The Immigration therefore sees the need to have facts and documents scrutinized m i c r o s c o p i c a l l y. Don’t hesitate to seek professional advice on such issues. James A. Kwaateng, is an Immigration Law practitioner with offices located at 168A Oakdale Road, Suite 4, Toronto, Ontario. Quebec common-law partners not entitled to support Supreme Court rules on Eric vs. Lola case involving woman seeking $56K monthly The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that so-called common-law couples in Quebec who split up are not entitled to the same rights as married couples when it comes to spousal support. By a 5-4 margin, the top court decision released Friday says the province’s civil code is constitutional in its treatment of the financial entitlement of couples who are not legally married and who separate. The decision means Quebec remains the only province that does not recognize co m m o n -l aw u n i o n s as de facto marriages. The ruling has broad implications in a province where the 31.5 per cent of couples report being in de facto marriage relationships, versus an average of 12.1 per cent in the rest of Canada. Justice Louis LeBel,
writing for the fivejudge majority, said there was no charter violation at play because the current provincial law promotes autonomy. “The Quebec National Assembly has not favoured one form of union over another,” he wrote. “The legislature has merely defined the legal content of the different forms of conjugal relationships. It has made consent the key to changing the spouses’ mutual patrimonial relationship. “In this way, it has preserved the freedom of those who wish to organize their patrimonial relationships outside the mandatory statutory framework.” While the province’s Civil Code does not regulate the status of de facto spouses, some laws — including those governing social assistance, income tax and Quebec’s Pension Plan — treat them as a couple. The case that sparked the debate, known as Lola vs. Eric, had been
making its way through the court system for years. It involved a Quebec couple who never married, but lived together for seven years and share three children. A court order prevents the publication of the parties’ real names. Pierre Bienvenue, the lawyer representing “Eric,” said his client is relieved the long court process is over and is satisfied with the decision. “It is really by force that he was dragged into this long debate,” Bienvenue said. $50M lump sum sought by woman After separating, Lola sought spousal support, b u t Q u e b e c ’s C i v i l Code provides no such provision for couples who are not legally married. Lola had been seeking a $50-million lumpsum payment as well as $56,000 a month from her former spouse — a well-known Quebec business tycoon known in cont'd on pg. 51

GRUESOME MURDER IN OUR COMMUNITY as 27-year woman is killed and burnt by former boyfriend A 27 year old woman of Toronto, Bridget Takyi, mother of two young boys, (a three year old and an eighteen months old), was discovered brutally murdered in the early hours of Saturday January 19, 2013 on Richgrove Drive near Martin Grove Road and Eglinton Avenue West in Toronto. Her former boyfriend, 30 yearold Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, has been arrested, is in custody and charged with first degree murder. He is accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death and setting her on fire. Homicide Det.-Sgt. Brian Borg of Toronto Police told reporters that Bridget Takyi was found around 7 A.M. Saturday. “Her death was extremely violent,” He said Takyi was walking to her parked car to head to work around 4 a.m. when she was brutally attacked, allegedly by her former boyfriend. She was stabbed, doused with “a flammable substance and set on
fire”, Borg explained. “The intensity of that fire has virtually left her body unrecognizable,” he said. An autopsy has since determined Takyi died of stab wounds. Within hours of the grisly killing, Borg said Emmanuel OwusuAnsah was arrested at a Mississauga gas station with help from Peel Regional Police. According to Police the accused has had several altercations with the law. He was on house arrest for allegedly beating up the 27-year-old woman just weeks earlier. On December 5, 2012, he was arrested following an incident involving Takyi. He was charged with three counts of assault, two counts each of assault with a weapon, possessing dangerous weapons, and one count of threatening death. Owusu-Ansah was released the same day and ordered to remain under house arrest as he awaited his January 30 court appearance
on those charges. “Needless to say, at the time that this homicide was committed, the accused was in breach of numerous conditions of his court ordered release,” Detective Borg said. The accused killer has so far made two court appearances. He appeared briefly at 2201 Finch Avenue West Court the day after the murder on Sunday January 20, and again on Tuesday January 22 for the murder charges. Despite the arrest, Police said the investigation is “by no means” concluded. They have released photos of some evidence found at the murder scene including a gas can, rubber gloves and a knife box, in the hopes someone may recognize the items and come forward. In an interview with The Ghanaian News, the mother of the victim, Juliana Mensah, aka Auntie Yaa Nyameama said that Bridget Takyi
Late Bridgett Takyi came to Canada at a tender age. She had her two children with the accused. According to Madam Mensah, Bridget had dropped her kids with her in the early hours of the morning as she frequently did, to go to work when she attacked and killed by the accused. According to her, the accused called her to inform her of what he had done to her daughter. Funeral arrangements for Bridget have been announced as follows: Visitation will be at DeMarco Funeral Home on 3725 Keele Street on Friday February 2nd, Celebration of her life will be on Saturday 2nd February, 2013 at the Church of Pentecost Banquet Hall, 2256 Sheppard West, Toronto. Burial will be on Saturday February 2, 2013. Police are still appealing to anyone with information regarding this killing to call the Homicide Unit at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

Ghana’s Cabinet and Executive Appointments: Ref: Mahama appoints more ministers
By: Kwaku A. Danso, USA The constitution of Ghana gives the President an open license to appoint not only as many cabinet Ministers as he deems fit, but also all town, city, metro, district and Regional Ministers as well as all Agency Heads.
nation for over 55 years now and our leaders cannot rely on the taxpayers of Europe, America and other Western nations to finance the lavish lifestyle of our executives in government. The size of government in Ghana needs to be trimmed down. Period! Every ounce of revenue collected at the ports of Ghana, duties, VAT, NHIL, from payroll accounts, property taxes, and the loans

and grants do not seem enough to meet government appetite. Ghana is still being subsidized by foreign nations, even in building our bridges and roads and highway. What can we do for ourselves? A little careful and serious planning is all we need. Our estimate is that it costs more than $300,000 per year for each Minister, MP, or Director level executive in government for salary, housing, vehicle, petrol, meeting sitting allowances and retirement bonuses. The recent appointments of President Mahama with six Ministers of State at the Presidency alone, in a nation that as of last year did not have completed offices for Members of Parliament in the last 20 years, does not provide a good image of our people.

NOTE:
Ghana’s President Mahama seems to have brought some old hands from the first PNDC / NDC military junta and revolution era into the modern fire. This may seem a little strange for a new era. It is confusing to see a nation with limited resources and a budget subsidized by foreign nations appointing so many “Ministers of State at the Presidency”. Some Ministries like “Chieftaincy Affairs” simply do not add much value and should be abolished. One has to ask for job definitions and responsibilities since each of these have to be paid like a Minister with hundreds of thousands of dollars per year each. Perhaps the interesting executive decision seems to be the specific appointment of specific “coordinators” to implement specific policies of campaign promises. President Mahama may not have much managerial experience, but this
decision is something we highly applaud as the first positive and serious step towards implementation of any policy. We do not remember the last time this has been done by previous Ghanaian leaders in the post-Nkrumah era. Perhaps one should give the President a chance of hope. Whether the President can crack the proverbial “Boarding School” whip to get the job done, or leave things to chance or to God as has been done in previous administration, is left to be seen. In general nobody, and we repeat nobody gets a job done without some motivation and incentive. There are few selfmotivated people in life as exception. Saints are few in life. The usual incentive is usually financial reward or a cane in the back, as in the olden days of Boarding School discipline. If we can make any recommendations, it is for the President to take his cont'd on pg. 63

BUSINESS Principles of Financial Success By Eddie Twumasi Smith Bsc(Hons) Chem Eng, MBA,CGA, CPA
wealth, however it is widely understood that people do not just make m o n ey b a s ed s o l ely on what they know.
The Webster dictionary defined principles as an accepted or professed rule of action or conduct; or a fundamental law of truth from which others are derived. Principles are the undeniable facts or attributes of nature which in many ways are intertwined in our choices and decisions. Ghanaian diplomat and 2001 Nobel Peace Prize recipient once stated, “to live is to choose, but to choose well, you must know who you are and what you stand for (principles), where you want to go and why you want to get there”. Success on the other hand, is defined as the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors or the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like. Dr. Mensah Otabil in his best-selling Pathway of success stated success is a choice, just as failure is a choice. He further surmised that success is conditional, based on a product of the mind, our words, and sum total of our actions So what do I mean by principles of financial success? In the nutshell, this article will highlight some of the myths and pre-requisites for financial breakthrough or freedom, regardless of the external challenges that serves as constraints to financial freedom. Why do some people attract wealth like a magnet, while others find it challenging to have excess at the end of the month? Observations that have been made of the richest people in the world have been that financial success is about 80% affected by human beliefs and attitudes towards money, while only 20% of financial success is affected by the knowledge and skills one possesses about ways to earn money. In this case, it would be a fallacy to believe that knowledge and how one thinks is not connected to attracting
Thomas J. Stanley conducted a survey and interviewed 733 multimillionaires. The survey asked respondents to list 30 factors which, in their opinion, have had the greatest impact on their achievement. Summarizing the data, the first top five of the most important factors were as follows (in the brackets is shown the percentage of respondents who named this factor): 1. Fair treatment of others (57%) 2. Self-discipline (57%) 3. Being able to make an agreement with others (56%) 4. A spouse that understands and s u p po r t s yo u ( 4 9 %) 5. Ability to work with more dedication than other people (47%) Now many people may disagree with the ranking of the above listed factors, or the factors altogether. There are also many sayings and potential myths out there that describe success to depend on many different things, such as you must have initial capital, rich relatives, acquaintances and to even have the ability to use and climb over others. If you happen to have this mindset, I have bad news for you! You fall into that group of people who believe that the formula for success is “To Have... To Make... To Be”. Well, the fact is that if you do fall into this group your formula is flipped upside down. In reality, the contrary is true. At first, you have to be self-confident, responsible, ambitious, tenacious, diligent, and treat others as you would want to be treated. Secondly, then experiment with some i d e a s , c r e a t e , g r o w, take risks, network, have a stable support system around you and eventually you’ll have high performance, success, recognition and in turn the financial success will follow. . In essence, hard work is a key foundation of attracting wealth to you. In the Good Book as found in Proverbs 12:24, it states “the hand of the diligent will rule, but the lazy man/woman will be put to forced labor.
Also Proverbs 10:4, we are told, He who has a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. Also Proverbs 6:6-11 reiterates the same message. That is not say for those who live from pay-cheque to pay-cheque are lazy, but in the context of the above, may possibly need to apply or enhance some of the characteristic traits connected to attracting wealth and to help increase on the sole source of income. People often complain about their low salaries. Do employers really pay too little? Are you familiar with the feeling or the thought that you would have more money if only your employers would raise your wages? However, an increase in salary is not in every case essential and does not always matter. Why? Because most people obey the Parkinson’s Law. This law says, “work expands to fill the time available for its completion” meaning that if you give yourself a month to complete a one week assignment, then (psychologically speaking) the task will increase in complexity and become more overwhelming as to fill that month. It may not even fill the extra time with more work, but just stress and tension about having to get it done. And often tasks are procrastinated until the last minute, all the while people remain supposedly busy holding back the progress they are making. Another condition to attract financial success is to develop the habit of constantly breaking Parkinson’s Law in our lives. This all has to do with procrastination. Procrastination is generically known as the act of doing something from which one derives enjoyment, and thus putting off important tasks to a later time. With this in mind, do employers really pay too little? or is it the way we utilize our time that makes the difference. If we can break Parkinson’s Law and complete tasks in the appropriate time frame they are required to be completed in, then our time remaining time can be maximized doing other tasks that are connected and engaged towards making possible cont'd on pg. 32
By: Konstantine Chatzidimos and Jayson Schwarz LLM Purchasers of new freehold and homes and condominium units who visit our offices are often confused about the way the harmonized sales tax (“HST”) affects their transactions.
as their primary place of residence for at least one (1) year. Required supporting documentation will include the Agreement of Purchase and Sale, the Statement of Adjustments, the insurance policy on the property as well as the lease with the first tenant. The rebate in this case is calculated the same manner as it is in respect of owner-occupied
Purchases of new freehold homes and condominium units in Ontario are subject to the HST. Resale Homes ARE NOT!!!!! What is important to understand is that the vast majority of Ontario builders incorporate the rebated amount of HST in their purchae prices. This is because the HST rebate is immediately available only to purchasers who are buying new properties with the intent that they will be their primary place of residence or the primary place of residence of a family relation. In this case, the purchaser does not have to submit a rebate application directly to the Canada Revenue Agency (“CRA”). The purchaser will sign the rebate application and provide it to the builder who will then send the rebate application to CRA when the builder claims a deduction in its net tax calculation for the amount of the rebate. Structured this way, the HST is effectively a non-issue for purchasers as the builder takes care of all the paperwork.
dwellings.
In cases where the purchased property will not be the principal residence of the buyer or of a family relation of the buyer, but will instead be an investment property, it is the responsibility of the buyer to inform the builder. This is because the builder must add back the HST rebate to the purchase price which will have to be paid by the buyer on closing. This does not mean that the HST rebate is lost to the buyer as they will have a two (2) year period in which to claim the HST rebate directly from CRA provided certain guidelines are met such as a ‘reasonable expectation’ that the first use of the property is – or will be – by a tenant occupying it
Please note that the underlying legislation is more complex than may appear from a reading of this article; for a comprehensive explanation of the HST’s impact on investor purchasers of new real estate it is strongly suggested that a lawyer be consulted.
Anyone who buys and rents a new freehold home/ or condominium unit must repay the full amount of the rebate (plus interest) if the property is sold within one year – unless the new purchaser acquires it for use as their (or a relation’s) primary place of residence. It is also important to note that lying to the builder about your intention to live in the new property when you will, in actuality, rent it out can cause you problems with the CRA. If you do this and the CRA finds out, you will be liable to pay back the full amount of the HST rebate you received on closing plus applicable interest and penalties. In addition you will be swearing affidavits under oath or affirming the truth and you could be guilty of perjury!!

TALKING FINANCES Insights into Financial Security
By: Gabriel Quayson, Toronto My good friend was recently telling me about a book entitled: ‘The Automatic Millionaire’ by David Bach. I recalled that I had also read this book years ago and it principles applies to most financial development. David Bach gives an easy way to apply program to secure your financial future. He stresses that what matters is not how much you earn but how much you save. You don’t have to make a lot of money to be rich. The average Joe will have millions of dollars pass through their hands from the time they enter the workforce in their twenties until they leave in their sixties. P a y Yo u r s e l f F i r s t The importance of learning to pay yourself first regardless of the amount you earn is an essential building block to your successful financial future. Paying yourself first or saving a portion of all your income, forces you to recognize your priorities. The simple truth is most of us work to earn money so we can use the funds to first take care of essential needs (food, clothes and shelter) and wants (cars, houses, vacation, gifts, helping others, etc.). There comes
a point in every person’s life when they do not have the youthful energy or desire to pursue and earn money like they once did. Yet, most people want to maintain their accustomed lifestyles. Having said that, a portion of all money earned by you should be set aside for times when you are unable to work or chooses not to work. The Latte Factor: Bach explains the Latte Factor as follows: Let s take an easy to understand example. Let’s say that you purchase a cup of your favourite tea/latté/ drink/etc. on the way to work everyday for $5.00. This would mean that you spend $100 = (20 days x $5) a month, and $1200 per year. Many employees have done this for years without giving it a second thought in regards to the monthly or yearly cost. You can still have the enjoyment of your daily latté, by making it at home and placing it in a thermos for work. Since the latté powder will be purchased in bulk the drink can be made at about 20% of the store price, this will give a net savings of $960 = ($1200-$240) By making your own tea/latté instead of purchasing it at a store
on the way to work, you save almost $1000 per a year while maintaining your preferred lifestyle. All you have done is re-arranged the way you spend your money. A u t o m a t e Yo u r C o n t r i b u t i o n One of the best ways to set funds aside is via Automating contributions to savings and retirement accounts. Set aside a pre-decided amount from every paycheque (all income). Do this automatically so you don’t even have to think about it each time. It automatically comes out of your account. You can start in increments like: 5% of your salary, then 10%, 12%, etc. . You can increase the percentage amount to the highest comfortable point. With online banking you can set this up yourself in less than 10 minutes.

Once the funds are put aside, you have to make some decision to ensure it is not depleted. Human nature dictates that once substantial funds are at our disposal, obstacle that was not considered solvable now comes under serious consideration for solution. One of the most important decisions to make is to establish that the funds put aside via pay yourself first principle can only be allocated to items that appreciates (houses, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, precious minerals). If this rule is not established, as soon as the set aside funds becomes substantially large, you will find many things to do with it. This means that you have come back to where you started from, as if you did not save at all. Another important concept is to leave the funds invested long enough to get the benefit of compound interest. Compound interest can be explained with the concept of egg and chicken. If you have one chicken and you eat all the eggs it lays, you will always have only one chicken. If you allowed the chicken’s egg to hatch and the young ones became matured enough to lay their own eggs, this will lead to a poultry farm. That’s the same

with compound interest. Compound interest arises when interest (hatched eggs) is added to the principal (chicken), so that, from that moment on, the interest that has been added also earns interest. Automation is the key, though, because without automation it becomes very easy to simply not save the money and instead use it for an unnecessary living expense. This brings a shift in your thinking. By simply having that money go away without any effort from you, you begin to reshape your life to this new “reality” quite easily. You check your account and when you see what’s in there, it already has the money you need to pay yourself taken out. Over time, this new situation becomes the “norm” for your day to day life, but that money you’re withdrawing just keeps
building up for your future. The above provides a great insight about the process of establishing yourself financially. These are lessons we are not necessarily taught in the education system or in our upbringing. I noted that it is key to ensure that you become aware of what others have done to attain financial success. Changing your mindset positively towards your financial situation enables you to be motivated and take steps to progress. I would recommend ‘The Automatic Millionaire’ to anyone who wants some practical steps to simplifying their finances. There are many books that offer advice and guidelines on how to prioritize your financial security. Being aware of what your financial strengths and weaknesses are, will enable you to have greater insight into which areas you can improve.

New Year Tragedy Hits Ghanaian Community in Toronto as Sakina Antwi Dies Suddenly
From Joe Kingsley Eyiah, Toronto Ms. Sakina Antwi had just returned from Ghana where she went to bury her beloved mother last month. Looking strong and healthy, Sakina, on Thursday, January 17, 2013 had finished cooking supper for her husband and three children. She left her home to attend her evening computer classes oblivious that her life was to end on that fateful evening.
When the Toronto Police knocked on the door of David Codjoe, a teacher of the TDSB (her husband) with the news that Sakina had collapsed on her way to classes and had been sent to the Humber River Regional Hospital, it was more than shocking! Her husband rushed to the hospital where six medical doctors tried to save her life but to no avail! Sakina gave up her ghost!

Is the Information Age Doing More Harm than Good Among Young People?

wealth creating decisions.
Modern information technologies such as computers and smart phones along with internet have greatly enhanced how we electronically communicate and entertain ourselves. Improvement methods in communication have also brought about unexpected and undesirable consequences, especially among young people. As with the introduction of other mass communication technologies in the past, issues pertaining to the use of internet and others means of modern messaging tools and social networking services while advantageous, could also be detrimental depending on how they are used. These technologies have become integral aspects of young people’s lives, and inasmuch as the vast majority of children and adolescents are responsible internet users for instance, others are undoubtedly not. Inappropriate use of internet or how it dominates young people’s lives has particularly become a source of concern for parents and those who have expertly studied the subject. It is indeed perturbing how some young postsecondary students especially abuse the use of internet and other communication technologies for entertainment and other unrelated academic purposes. They fail to recognize that while these information technologies enhance learning capabilities, their unrestrained use also have negative consequences. Internet has particularly been identified as one of the most powerful sources of unacceptable pleasure seeking and addiction for today’s youth. It is for instance not uncommon for many teenagers to spend hours viewing pornography or engaging in online sexually charged conversations. Not to mention their excessive involvement in activities such as e-mailing, chatting, downloading immoral songs and pictures, and searching for videos/music lyrics with highly charged violent contents. Some young people consider the internet as a technology full of personal entertainment, and are eager to exploit it to the fullest forgetting that it has potential long-term negative effects on their personal and academic lives. Young people should understand that misuse of internet is similar to drug abuse and can negatively influence one’s social behaviour and academic aspirations among others. Like anything else, which has advantages and disadvantages, modern technologies should be used prudently. In the academic environment, the internet is primarily used to support learning, enhance instructions and also, improve communication between educators and students among other things. As a medium of communication, internet is also used by faculty members and students alike to access sources of information to enhance instructions and learning capabilities. Undoubtedly, internet has become an integral part of people’s working or professional, academic and even personal lives and its appropriate use is markedly an amazing educational tool for educators and students alike. It makes teaching and learning much easier than in the past. The technology then presents
In other words, the amount of money that you make in your salary is not in every case the essential matter, but by being mindful of Parkinson’s Law, our incomes can always be supplemented according to the way our time and energy is expended and used efficiently during those working hours dedicated to our employers; furthermore, additional time that can be used in wealth generating activities.
wonderful learning opportunities for those pursuing studies at all levels of education. As a learning resource, the internet is also useful to the instructional and learning needs of students in the same manner as books, magazines, videos, academic journals or any other information s o u r c e s . S i m i l a r l y, some courses are even conveniently taken online, and that certainly allows professors and students to speed up instructional and learning processes for the mutual benefit of both parties. The problem however is that many young individuals routinely abuse the fantastic opportunities internet provides. The overriding concern is that whilst many students utilize the internet appropriately to enhance their learning outcomes, there is no doubt some of them abuse it for personal use or gratification instead of academic work. Of utmost concern is how some students treat the internet as panacea for all their academic challenges. Youth need to understand that internet is not just a tool for instant messaging or e-mail communication and means of entertainment. They should therefore not devote excessive amount of time using it at the risk of other important things in their lives such as academic pursuits. Also, when they use it for academic purposes, they should have a responsibility not to misuse it to the point of contravening established academic protocols, especially plagiarism. Young post-secondary students thus especially need to develop the ability to use technologies in a responsible manner to meet their learning needs. It is evident that modern communication tools, including internet come with advantages as well as risks, and young people have to be able to differentiate between such opportunities and dangers. It does not help, but more damaging to their learning potentials when they use the internet excessively for social networking and entertainment purposes. It is as become increasingly apparent that one of the major side effects of inappropriate usages of the information age technologies is the often poor academic performances among young people, especially those pursuing postsecondary studies. Other than utilizing the internet to access academic materials inappropriately, some young postsecondary also use it for playing games to the detriment of their academic work. The information age while definitely advantageous, also has detrimental aspects and consequences, but many young people are unfortunately not able to discern from such benefits and disadvantages. Also, whereas the internet for instance particularly allows people to access wealth of information for instructional and learning purposes, many young people pursuing post-secondary studies either exceedingly depend on it or abuse it. Overreliance and misuse of the digital age among young people is worrisome because it potentially leads to poor academic outcomes. In general, the computer age is positive, but its harmful effects relate to how its matching technologies are used and that is where young people to need be careful.
Principles of Financial Success passive income stream.
If this describes your situation, then your employers, who pay insufficiently, are not guilty. It’s only your own habits that have placed you directly into the “hamster wheel” in this vicious cycle. The good news is the cycle can be changed. Which is of greater worth? To have a wellpaid job? Or create y ou r ow n b us in es s ? Continue to work for others or create your own business? It depends on your individual needs. There are different types of income flows. There are active and passive incomes flows. Active income is generated when you get paid for your time at work. If you work, you get paid. If you do not work, you do not get paid. Passive income is generated when your time and effort to the work may be paid for later on and many times over. For example, a writer wrote a book within two years. However, the book became a bestseller and he will get income for many years for the contribution of two years. Investing also generates passive income. If you invest your active income wisely, it can create a
Yo u r o w n b u s i n e s s can provide a passive income too, but only if you will create a business system that works in the long run without your direct intervention. Most people set up a business just to create a job for themselves. They do not work for an employer. They are working for their business and create an active income flow. In the long term, the investment of this active income becomes a continuous source of income stream. For those who do not see long-term prospects for starting their own business and do not want to take great risk or do not have original business ideas, there is the ability to connect to existing business systems, such as network marketing. This is another way, accessible to all, to create a passive income stream. You just need to choose an organization which is reliable, has a good reputation and history of success and a good education system that will allow you to learn from the leaders, not from ordinary academics. Robert Kiyosaki, the famous author of books on financial success, calls network marketing a franchise for the twenty-first century. Why focus on passive income? Passive income can eventually set you free. What does it mean to set you free? The term “freedom” has many definitions. My favorite formula of freedom is: Freedom = time + money. If you have enough time, but no money, you are not free to choose what you want to do and where you want to be. If you have money but no time, you still are not free.
Financial freedom is the only way to real freedom. Financial freedom is achieved when your passive income allows you to live your desired lifestyle. Then you can work only if you want to. The problem is that for most people it seems unrealistic. This is largely because we come short of self-discipline. In life, it seems like a self-service bistro: All those, who stand at the beginning of the line today, once stood at the end of the line. Most people change lines too often, after only reaching the middle of the line. They will never reach the front of the line, where the tastiest desserts are packed. The condition for financial success is simple. The earlier you develop habits for increasing your capital, the sooner you will enjoy the fruits of financial success and freedom. What then is the formula for financial success? The true financial success formula is simple: spend less than you earn and invest the difference. Also, consider alternative income or passive income and constantly reinvest the growth of income or surplus. Regardless of how much we earn, the amount of money and time that remains at the end of the month demonstrates our ability to increase our capital. In fact, this is all that we have earned and all that we’ve spent was earned by others. You may disagree, but the most important value is the value of your accumulated capital minus debt. Stay tuned for the final and conclusion on this article in the next month’s edition of the Ghanaian News.

Federal agency loses data on 583,000 Canadians A portable hard drive containing personal information of more than half a million people who received student loans has gone missing, the federal government revealed Friday. Human Resources and Skills Development Canada says the device disappeared from an HRSDC office in Gatineau, Que., in early November. The hard drive had personal information on 583,000 Canadians who were clients of the Canada Student Loans program from 2000 to 2006. Borrowers from Quebec, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories are not affected. The information on the missing hard drive includes: Student names, social insurance numbers, dates of birth, contact information and loan balance of Canada Student Loan borrowers. Personal contact information
for 250 HRSDC employees. The government says no banking or medical information was on the hard drive. Letters are going out to everyone affected to tell them what steps to take to protect themselves. No evidence of fraud So far, there’s no sign that any of the missing data has been accessed or used for fraudulent purposes, but the government has called in the RCMP and alerted the office of the privacy commissioner. “I want all Canadians to know that I have expressed my disappointment to departmental officials at this unacceptable and avoidable incident in handling Canadians’ personal information,” said Human Resources and Skills Development Minister Diane Finley in a statement. (Sean Kilpatrick/Canadian Press) “I have requested that HRSDC employees across Canada receive comprehensive communications on the seriousness of these recent incidents and that they participate in mandatory training on a new security policy to ensure that similar situations do not occur again.” She says employees who fail to adhere to the new policy could be fired. This is the second incident involving missing personal information that her department has faced in less than a month. In late December, HRSDC revealed that a USB key containing personal information on about 5,000 Canadians disappeared in November. CBC News
The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Tawiah III, has died in a London hospital after battling a short illness Cont'd from pg. 5 Some of the aggrieved persons subsequently dragged King Tackie Tawiah to the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, seeking to dethrone him, but for more than six years of legal tussle, his challengers did not succeed in their action, as he continued to occupy the throne until his death. Before his installation in June 2006, King Tackie Tawiah had been a member of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) since 2002 and former member of the Law Review Commission. With a solid educational background in Political Science, Economics and Law and a wealth of experience at
the NDPC, King Tackie Tawiah had ascended the Ga Stool with a lot of promise to accelerate the development of the Ga State. He had indicated that although every child developed by learning how to sit, crawl, walk and run, the situation in which the Gas found themselves demanded, that “we run immediately because we are lagging behind”. Wi t h h i s a m b i t i o n w e l l defined, the late Ga Mantse, during his coronation, announced the establishment of a Ga Development Corporation (GDC) to raise funds for the speedy development of the Ga State. Holding a BA degree in
Political Science (Pace University, New York) and an MA in Economics (New School for Social Research, New York), he was well disposed to lead the rediscovery effort of the political clout of the Ga State and the economic empowerment of his subjects. And with a PhD in Public Law (New School for Social Research, New York), an LL.B and a Diploma in Law (La Salle University, Chicago), he surely had a deep insight of the legal boundary within which to operate and achieve the aspirations of the people. With his death, it is not clear whether the rival claims to the Ga Mantse Stool will end or fester.

Frankly Speaking
Attention Please!!! No return to the violent days By Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg The Ghanaian community in Canada has been shaken by news of the brutal and gruesome murder of a young woman by her Ghanaian-born boyfriend. From all police accounts and reports, this was a very grisly and horrific crime. The woman was said to have been stabbed so many times and her body set on fire, burning her beyond recognition. This crime gives us a chilling reminder of violent events a few years back in our GhanaianCanadian communities in Canada especially in Montreal and Toronto. Between 2000 and 2009, a number of our youth in these two cities were engaged in a number of violent incidents that left some of them, and sometimes innocent bystanders, dead or maimed. These violent events and behaviors have landed a number of such youths in jail as well. In the years 2007, 2008 and 2009, our community in Toronto especially watched in horror as a number of our youth went rampaging with weapons to mow others down for the flimsiest of excuses. Those were the years when about five of our youth met their unnecessary and untimely death through traffic accidents that left them burnt and dead. And there was within this period a youth who set his mother’s house on fire in
to have had any influence in the decision of this man to kill and mutilate the body of their mother. What reason or factor in this whole wide wretched earth will lead a man to stab his former lover for over thirty times and set her dead body on fire? the Greater Toronto Area that resulted in the death of her sister and mother. The list of violence included shootings in schools, basketball courts, parties, community events and so on. It was really difficult to put a handle on the causes of these violent actions among the youth which generated and produced all these violent actions. Some of them seemed at the time to relish the violence. Things have been relatively quite over the past two years. But all of a sudden we have been hit like a thunderbolt with the most heinous of all violent crimes: the brutal murder and burning of a young woman from our community by her former boyfriend, also from our community. It is extremely difficult to understand the madness that led to this brutal and senseless crime. This young woman was brutally murdered by someone who claimed to have loved her and had two children with her. The ages of the two innocent children, only three years and eighteen months old, did not seem
I believe in the next couple of months and years, we will be subjected to all kinds of reasons and motives for this brutal and senseless murder. They will range from the suspect having mental health problems to being abused and all kinds of crap from defense attorneys. I take a very strong exception to people who commit heinous crimes and plead insanity as a defense. How can someone be insane but methodologically plan and execute such a crime? Owusu Ansah, the suspect, certainly knew when this woman left home for work every morning. He calculated the time that she will drop off her kids at her mother’s place and walk back to her car. He had all this mapped out. And after executing his plan, decided to completely “finish” her off by burning her lifeless body. And he called the mother of the victim he had just murdered to taunt her that he had finished off her daughter. This clearly indicates someone who knew exactly what he was doing.

This crime should make us sit up again as a community to review certain signs and events that have led to this and other violence in the past which have claimed the lives of some of our community members especially the youth. Yes, there may be some community members who are troubled but if we are aware of such persons and the dangers that they pose, we should take action quickly to let the appropriate authority handle them and protect innocent lives. This latest violent crime also raises a lot of questions about the way the criminal justice system works when it comes to protecting minorities. I strongly believe that the criminal justice system totally failed to protect Bridget Takyi in this instance. According to the police, the suspect, Emmanuel Owusus Ansah has had several altercations with the law. As recently as December 2012 he was charged with assaulting Ms. Takyi and was also charged with countless number of very serious criminal offences. These included, according to the police, “three counts of assault, two counts each of assault with a weapon, possessing dangerous weapons, and one count of threatening death”. Surprisingly, he was released on bail the same
day he was arraigned. Did the court and police not take these charges seriously? The police further said that “at the time that this homicide was committed, the accused was in breach of numerous conditions of his court- ordered release”. What monitoring and control systems were put in place to ensure that he did not harm the victim while this monster was out there on bail? We seriously hope that the police and the criminal justice system will also provide answers to these nagging questions in the weeks and months ahead. The system clearly failed Ms. Takyi and contributed to her death by not offering her the necessary protection and by letting loose on the street someone who had
shown, to all intents and purposes that he was a monster and potential killer based on the charges he was slapped with just this past December. We s h o u l d , a s a community, be on the lookout for signs of such troubles and troubled persons. We cannot afford to return to the violent days of the 2000 to 2009 periods. We are now saddled with two tiny kids who have no mother to raise them. We need to offer the surviving grandmother all the support we can provide as a community to assist her, not only in dealing with this emotional trauma, but also raise these tiny kids who will be growing up as orphans from very tender ages.

An armed column of Chadian soldiers is making its way to Mali overland and more than 1,000 Nigerian soldiers are expected there too. AFP is also reporting that Islamist groups have blown up the strategic Tassiga bridge over the River Niger, near the border with Niger and on the road to Gao. “No-one can pass to Niger or come to Gao,” transport business owner Abdou Maiga told the agency. The UN refugee agency says more than 7,000 civilians have fled to neighbouring countries since 10 January to escape the fighting. In another development, Egypt’s President Mohammed Morsi has unveiled a proposal for a peaceful resolution to the Mali conflict. The five-point plan includes political negotiations, economic and development initiatives and coordinated relief efforts. President Morsi has spoken against military intervention in Mali. BBC News

A New Year Resolution Tips for Students to be Successful. By Golda Abena Quayson
Making New Year ’s resolutions is the easy part. But sticking with them throughout the year can be tough and challenging. Our teens and our young adults make it to colleges and universities and they are very excited, but they need help, in most cases to make plans that will help them during the school year. Here’s a list of common student resolutions and tips that will help them to succeed during their school year if they stick to them. To Improve Your Grades: almost every college has student support and tutoring services. They also have Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) systems in place, as well as writing labs available to help manage academics and Co-Op placements. Most of the colleges and universities even provide support for students with disabilities if you identify yourself as such. These centres, for example, provide study tips, hosts workshops and offer free drop-in services to help students discover their learning style. Also you can consider joining or starting a study group with classmates depending on your program and course of study. Plug into these free services to help you organize your studies. Most importantly, Get More Sleep – Increasing the amount and quality of sleep you get can be as easy as exercising more and getting rid of afternoon naps. Not only will you feel better and be more alert for early classes, but it will also help curb addictions to energy drinks and coffee. Try not to waste your time and energy on the computer/ iphones and other devices t too much if they are not related to your studies. You have to Be More Health Conscious: Take advantage of your school’s fitness facilities. Fees tend to be low, or already included in student benefits. For example; Dental plan benefits, ask from the students’ services. Family physicians can also be a great resource to help students identify a fitness/nutrition plan that works best for their lifestyle. Try to avoid junk foods and fast foods and learn to eat proper nutrition balanced diet even if you’re buying it. Learn to Broaden Your Horizons: A great college experience is about f i n d i n g b a la n c e . O f
course, studying hard, excelling in your courses and gaining workplaceready skills is essential. But it is also important to make friends, experience new things and have fun. Seek out opportunities to get involved through student leadership programs, athletics, clubs or student associations, which can contribute to a rewarding and unique college experience. Find Financial Stability: Financial resources should not be a barrier to education. Money is always an issue to most students. That is why colleges provide financial assistance resources to help students pay for their education. Create a reasonable budget for each month, considering everything from tuition and textbooks to entertainment, food and savings. Apply for scholarships, awards and bursaries that can help subsidize education endeavours. If you are not sure, contact your counsellor/school administration regarding free grants. For example, enquire about the 30% reduction of OSAP from the government if you qualify. Students should also review their finances annually and set achievable goals for the year. Ask a final-year business student for help if you want on-going assistance. Don’t just make a budget, but stick to it. Get a Part-time Job: Contact your school’s career services office for information about parttime work on campus. They often provide networking events, resources for finding jobs, interview skills counselling and training in the “soft skills” employers’ value, such as customer service and communication). It’s also a good idea to start looking for a summer internship/ co-op placement now so you can relax later in the semester when you’re busy with term papers and exams, and have less time to devote to a summer job search. Learn a New Skills if you have time: Take an elective
course, or find a club with like-minded individuals to enjoy new experiences and develop new skills. There so many interest courses offered every year. There is also a lot of activities organized by the student bodies on campus, join one. Find classes to indulge your love of learning expand your skills or sample different types of job activities. In all, you need to Find Balance: Schedule time for study, fitness and entertainment. A little fun and a lot of balance will help you feel energized and less stressed, and you’ll be less likely to procrastinate. For example do Volunteer. Not only does it feel great to contribute to your community, but volunteering also looks great on a resume. Look for opportunities to donate your time and talents through your student association or student services office. Some colleges even plan group community service activities for student volunteers, so you can make new friends in the process. Make Plans for the Future: While in college, you are constantly making major decisions that will have an impact on your future, as you plan for further education, apply for jobs and evaluate relationships. It can feel overwhelming. Try focusing on one decision at a time, researching and evaluating your options to make informed decisions. Student support and advising are often provided by colleges, so take advantage of the experts at your disposal and plan for your next life stage. Finally, attending college/ university is not only about going to classes and studying for exams, but acquiring the skills to equip you to land a job in future, so establish a successful career and maintain a positive lifestyle that will help you to achieve your goals. One of those critical skills is learning how to set goals and meeting the expectations. In the end, setting achievable New Year’s goals towards your schooling and keeping them is a perfect way for students to begin developing that skill, which will eventually land them the job they worked so hard for in the future. Commit to your goals, and enjoy your educational journey. Good luck.

Silent Treatment as a Response to Unpleasant Behaviour in a Relationship
Silent treatment is an intentional effort initiated by someone to provoke attention from a partner, friend, family member, or worse, a sign that someone’s voice has been squelched or suppressed so often that silence is their only way of responding to a difficult moment. Some relationships are marked by overt expressions of anger; yelling, shouting, and even violence and the like. There are also those conflicted relationships that are marked by silence. I therefore want us to take a look at the issue termed silent treatment? Too often, we treat the silent treatment in relationships casually. This strategy for communication becomes a behavior that we excuse or simply put up with, like accommodating someone who claims he or she is not a “morning person.” Or things like” as for me I don’t like this” or that. We tolerate or excuse such behaviours with indifference which amount to silent acquiescence of the other person’s behaviour although we do not like those behaviours. “Silence” then becomes our way of blocking the irritation we feel from the negative behaviour of people closer to us. My effort to discover and learn more about why some of us use the silent treatment and what the silent treatment is really about led me to conversations and discussions with a clinical psychologist. I wanted to find out if “silent treatment” is a form emotional abuse or punishment. The results are startling: Some silent treatment rises to the level of emotional abuse. This silent treatment involves intentional silence that is meant to inflict emotional punishment. For example: “If she’s going to keep nagging me, I will just ignore her because I know that drives her crazy.” She continued that “silent treatment” suggests poor interpersonal relationship skills and more specifically, it suggests poor communication, distress tolerance and emotion regulation skills. If used repeatedly in a relationship to punish the other person, this silent treatment does rise to the level of emotional abuse. If the non-silent partner has been guilty of untoward behaviour, silence may be the silent partner’s only available means of response, but it will be ineffective in the long run unless the untoward behaviour is actually addressed. If the silence and the behaviour both continue, both partners will continue to be distressed. The silent treatment can also be used as a form of bullying in that it is used to manipulate an outcome in favour of the one engaging in the behaviour. It may not necessarily be with the goal of discharging one’s upset, but causing the other person to acquiesce to one’s preference. In other words, it
is meant to exact agreement without protest. This form of bullying works because the victim cannot tolerate the other person’s withdrawal. The victim feels abandoned and likely have their own issues of self-worth which in turn makes this an effective strategy for the bully. The victim, needing to feel connected, acquiesces to the demands of the bully to stop the silent treatment. These relationships are often lopsided in favour of the bully. The bully gets what he or she wants, but at the expense of a wholesome relationship. Some folks go silent amidst an interpersonal conflict because they either cannot cope with the conflict or are no match in a verbal battle with their partners. Seeing the futility of arguing, this person goes quiet to avoid an escalation of conflict or to resist being overwhelmed by the other person’s quick and loud response. In these situations, the silent treatment serves as a means of self-preservation. In situations such as these, it is common to see the other party as excessively verbose, often defensive and certainly with much to say. Given the difficulty of getting these people to listen and stop arguing their case, their partner simply withdraws. This is most like giving up. These persons are often more sad than mad. Silent treatment is like a “Mexican stand-off”, (a situation in which no one can emerge as a clear winner. In some instances, both persons go silent towards each other with each eyeing for who gives in first. The mutual silent treatment is almost childish in appearance with stubbornness and pride at the root. With neither party willing to back down, these situations can go on indefinitely typically creating even greater distress for those friends, neighbours and loved ones who likely see the foolishness of both persons’ ways. Regardless though of why a relationship is marked by the silence, silence always spells some sort of difficulty in resolving conflicts. Be it to wreak vengeance, a strategy to bully, a means for self-preservation or pride, silence in a relationship is indicative of continued conflict. Silence as a strategy to manage either one’s feelings or another’s behaviour is self-defeating. In lieu, people are encouraged to find their reasonable voice and learn to express their needs, wants and issues verbally, nonjudgementally and informationally. Like we tell our kids, use your words to settle misunderstanding and disputes ….not “silence”!!

PHYSICAL FITNESS: A NEW YEAR RESOLUTION
As we start a New Year, most of us will make New Year resolutions. One of the commonest resolutions is trying to keep fit. In this article I will spell out some basic tips to help you keep fit and reduce risk of chronic disease. Starting a fitness program may be one of the best things you can do for your health. After all, physical activity can reduce your risk of chronic disease, improve your balance and coordination, help you lose weight — even boost your self-esteem. And the benefits are yours for the taking, regardless of age, sex or physical ability. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends that healthy adults include aerobic exercise and strength training in their fitness plans, specifically:
is an important decision, but it doesn’t have to be an overwhelming one. By planning carefully and pacing yourself, you can make fitness a healthy habit that lasts a lifetime. Stretching and flexibility
Regular exercise can help you control your weight, reduce your risk of heart disease, and strengthen your bones and muscles. But if you haven’t exercised for some time and you have health concerns, you may want to talk to your doctor before starting a new fitness routine.
Stretching is a powerful part of any exercise program. Most aerobic and strength training programs inherently cause your muscles to contract and flex. Stretching after you exercise promotes equal balance. Stretching also increases flexibility, improves range of motion of your joints and boosts circulation. Stretching can even promote better posture and relieve stress.
As a general rule, stretch whenever you exercise. If you don’t exercise regularly, you might want to stretch at least three times a week to maintain flexibility. When you’re - At least 150 minutes stretching, keep it gentle. of moderate aerobic Breathe freely as you activity — or 75 minhold each stretch. Try utes of vigorous aeronot to hold your breath. bic activity — a week Don’t bounce or hold a painful stretch. Expect to - Strength training exercises at least twice a week Starting a fitness program feel tension while you’re stretching. If you feel When you’re designing your personal fitness program, consider your fitness goals. Think about your fitness likes and dislikes, and note your personal barriers to fitness. Then consider practical strategies for keeping your fitness program on track.
pain, you’ve gone too far. •
Hand Scheduled Section Focus Aerobic exercise Regular aerobic exercise can help you live longer and healthier. After all, aerobic exercise reduces health risks, keeps excess pounds at bay, strengthens your heart and boosts your mood. Healthy adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity — or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity — a week. That doesn’t have to be all at one time, though. Aerobic exercise can even be done in 10-minute increments. So what are you waiting for? For many people, walking is a great choice for aerobic exercise. In fact, walking is one of the most natural forms of exercise. It’s safe, it’s simple — and all it takes
to get started is a good pair of walking shoes and a commitment to include aerobic exercise in your daily routine. Of course, there’s more to aerobic exercise than walking. Other popular choices include swimming, bicycling and jogging. Activities such as dancing and jumping rope count, too. Get creative. Strength training Strength training can help you tone your muscles and improve your appearance. With a regular strength training program, you can reduce your body fat, increase your lean muscle mass and burn calories more efficiently. Better yet, strength training doesn’t have to take as long as you might think. For most people, one set of strength exercises for major muscle groups performed two to three times a week is sufficient.
Strength training can be done at home or in the gym. Free weights and weight machines are popular strength training tools, but they’re not the only options. You can do strength training with inexpensive resistance tubing or even your own body weight. With proper technique, you may enjoy noticeable improvements in your strength and stamina in just a few weeks. In all cases, keep it simple so you can last. Doing too much at the beginning can discourage you from continuing, therefore do not be a week end or one day warrior. Take your time, after all in exercise, just as in life, consistency is the key. Happy New Year to all our readers and remember to keep fit. References: Modified from Mayo Clinic Housecall, December, 2012
Slum Demolition and the Urban Poor cont'd from pg. 14 defecate in the open waters and bathe in the same. This is simply a public health disaster waiting to manifest in Nigeria. Thousands of children are also likely to drop out of school due to the displacements and the demolition of their schools. Re-absorption into new schools is capital intensive, as indigent pupils have to await new sessions, or read to pass entrance exams, while impecunious parents seek funds to buy uniforms and school books. West Africa is ranked as the region with the lowest literacy rate in the world with Burkina Faso as the lowest world literacy rate of 21.8 %, Guinea 29%, Mali 26%, Liberia 38%, Gambia 42%, Nigeria 56.9 %, and Ghana 64.5%. In a field trip to Mpape, one of the 19 slums to be demolished in Abuja, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) heard the residents emphasise that their children will have to stop schooling for a while as a result of the relocation exercise and its attendant economic implication. According to them, after finding another roof over their heads, feeding will be their next obligation while education remains a tertiary item on agenda. This is dire for West Africa. What purpose do these demolitions serve?
Governments argue that the slums must give way for better city planning and houses with better physical design. They say slums house criminals and are less hygienic, with poor water and sanitation, education and security. But, most settlements that have been pulled down did not go back into hands of those who once lived there. Taking the example of Nigeria, most of the demolished settlements have been converted to highbrow estates for the rich without an alternative settlement plan or compensation for the original inhabitants. The slum improvement exercises have actually been land grabbing schemes. Urbanisation is an integral part of economic development. As such, governments of West African states ought to invest in road maps for the rapid urbanisation ongoing in the region. Studies such as the “West Africa Long Term Perspective Study” and the “Nigeria: Next Generation Report” should inform the various vision documents and policies of the states. Hundreds of thousands are moving from the rural to the urban in search of better life. Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria for instance was built to accommodate 500,000 inhabitants, but as of the 2006 census, Abuja had
a population of 778,567; at the moment in 2012, it is estimated that Abuja has 2,514,738 persons. The city is increasing at the growth rate of 9.3% and is estimated to have 3,324,000 in the year 2015 with no concrete plan for containing the tide of urbanisation. E C O WA S must strengthen its policy on the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) and put a working resettlement policies in place. The Abuja Federal Capital Development Administration (FCDA) has a policy to provide full resettlement to indigenes when demolition occurs, but unfortunately there is no such policy for non-indigenes living in the city. This policy is not only discriminatory but is likely to fester the lingering indigene-settler crises tearing Nigerian cities such as Kaduna, Jos, Kano, etc. There is a strong need for West African States both at national and regional levels to put in place a mechanism to ensure that international standards and procedures are followed in urban planning and development in West African cities rather than resorting to demolition as an option. By: Dr. Dlamini Zuma Africa is increasingly seen as the continent of the future, as a place of enormous possibilities, thanks to a young and growing population, our natural resources, but also because of the improving business climate and opportunities, and the strides made in the consolidation of democracy and governance. We are also proud of the more prominent role that women are playing in the running of the affairs of the continent and shaping its destiny. Indeed, there is general consensus that these are times of boundless opportunities for Africa. These are also reflected in changes in the headlines in the media about us. We do however still have challenges that need to be overcome urgently and collectively. Our continent still has to contend with huge infrastructure backlogs, backlogs in education (especially higher education), health and other basic services, including responding to rapid urbanization, youth development and the need for food security. At the same time, it is a matter of concern that negotiations on global trade issues and climate change have almost collapsed, with very serious consequences for Africa. It is therefore important that Africa remains resolute and determined to overcome these challenges. Central to this, is the institutional and other capacities to implement our plans at national, regional and continental levels. We must be resolute to meet our vision of an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa by 2063. Amongst the critical areas in which we are required to speed up implementation, as Member states and the RECs, and supported by the Commission and other continental institutions, must necessarily include, but not exclusively: B u i l d i n g A f r i c a ’s human capacity through the prioritisation of Primary Health Care and Prevention; Social Security; Education, Higher education, skills development and investment in Science a n d Te c h n o l o g y, Research and Innovation. Expanding Agricultural production, developing the Agro-processing and businesses sectors, increase market access, and attaining Africa’s collective Food

2013: Exciting Year for Africa security and nutrition. Promoting inclusive economic development and industrialization through the acceleration of infrastructure development projects that will aid economic integration, expand intraAfrica investment and trade, and Africa’s global market access, value addition, enhanced private sector engagement, effective and sustainable utilization of the continent’s mineral and other natural resources and of course promoting intra-continental tourism. Promoting peace a n d s t a b i l i t y, g o o d governance, democracy and human rights as a foundation for inclusion, security and the development of the continent and its people. Mainstreaming the participation of women and the youth in all priorities and activities of the Union and the continent, Implementing strategies of resource mobilization, including alternate sources of funding, to enable Africa to finance its programmes and development. Building a Peoplecentred Union through active communication of the programmes of the African Union, the branding of the Union and participation of all stakeholders in defining and implementing the Afric an a ge nd a. Strengthening the institutional capacity of the AU Commission, including its working relationship with other organs and institutions. Working together so that we develop and strengthen coordination and cooperation with the RECs and Member states. Strengthen cooperation with continental strategic partners, like the ECA and ADB, so that we build on our different, but complementary roles, working together towards the realisation of a common continental agenda. We should work with our partners from across the world, cooperating on the agenda of the continent as set by our Union, so that Africa takes responsibility for of its development and in the process, contributes to the building of a more just and equitable world. While the majority of countries in the Continent are enjoying peace and stability, sadly there are
still a number of countries mired in conflict, whether ongoing, ree m e r g i n g o r n e w. We are registering steady progress towards the operationalization of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), which has played a critical role in the management of these conflict situations. As a result, progress has been registered in Somalia, Sudan/South S u d a n , M a d a g a s c a r. However, we have seen the re-emergence of conflict in the eastern DRC, Guinea Bissau and the Central African Republic, whilst in Mali and the Sahel we are now facing new, multi-faceted challenges with broader regional and continental implications. Member States, RECs and the Union must continue to join efforts towards achieving sustainable peace in Africa, with
the assistance of the international community. It is my fervent hope that we maintain a proper and healthy balance between achieving peace and advancing development. It is evident that the Continent
cannot advance without succeeding on both fronts simultaneously. This balance can most effectively be achieved through an active African citizenry participating in governance and
development, and through active mobilization of all sectors of civil society and the Diaspora, especially during this year of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Union. cont'd on pg. 60

85 year old Maame Serwaah Bonsu who came to Canada about 17 years ago to visit her children was honored with a special Birthday Bash by her children at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall. It all started with a Thanksgiving Service at Living Word Assembly of God Church on Sunday December 30, 2012. Maame Serwaah was born alone but she has been blessed with long life and today smiles and boasts with the blessing of 10 children, 33 Grand Children and Great Grand Children. The hall was filled to capacity with many of her children, grand and great children, family members, Church members, friends, and loved ones. Maame Serwaah Bonsu who never attended school because her parents did not want their beloved daughter beaten at school in Ghana has a message for all children to “stay in school and stay away from trouble.

The Methodist Church Ghana–North America Mission Evangelism and Missions Conference 2013
By Jonathan Annobil, Toronto The Methodist Church Ghana (Toronto Society) hosted the Methodist Church Ghana North America Mission Evangelism & Missions (Consultative Meeting or Conference 2013). The event was held from 18th to 20th January under the theme “Mobilization for effective witness to Christ today” taken from Matthew 28:19-20. Delegates from United States and Canada attended the conference. Delegates from the US came from New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Worchester and Ohio. Delegates from Canada came from Toronto, the host city, Ottawa, Edmonton and Montreal. The Conference was rounded off with a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday January 20th with the Very Reverend Frank Decker (Mission Society, USA) as the preacher. The clergies in attendance were introduced by the Very Very Rev. Dr. Rev. Dr. Asare Kusi, the host pastor after which the guest preacher offered his sermon. He said that the message of Emmanuel Jesus is the coming of the Kingdom of God and that the most prevalent theme of Jesus was the Kingdom of God. Asare Kusi Christians have to be kingdom-minded and should focus on Jesus rather than something else, he added. Evangelism and Mission appeal was done by Brother Ebenezer Acheampong with Very Rev. Jacob French as the liturgist.

cont'd from pg. 47 This is a watershed year for Africa, which marks 50 years of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the jubilee of the Pan A f r i c a n Wo m e n ’s Organisation (PAWO) that was established
2013: Exciting Year for Africa in 1962, as well as 10 years since the launch of the African Union. These anniversaries are observed and organised under the theme: “Pan Africanism and African Renaissance”, providing
us with opportunities to take stock of the key milestones of the past 50 years and to project to the future. Africa is well placed to develop innovative solutions to the challenges
it faces. We have our genius, our shared values and resources, to invent and reinvent models of equitable growth and sustainable development that will provide a better life for the current and future generations.
Indeed Africa can be innovative, because with the economic crisis and other developments of the last few decades, there is no single model that can claim superiority, so we can develop our own path. To t h a t e n d , t h e
Commission is in the process of developing a Concept Paper, which will lay a basis for the Africawide Agenda 2063, taking stock of the origins and meaning of Pan Africanism and Renaissance during the first fifty years of our Union, its relevance today and how these concepts will continue to inspire successive generations over the next fifty years. The AU Commission intends to consult widely, starting with the Member States and the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), stakeholders and sectors on the continent and in the Diaspora, such as academia, artists, civil society, women and youth, the private sector and others, with a view to have a Framework document for debate to the Anniversary Summit in May. We have already started working with our continental strategic partners, the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and African Development Bank on these matters. 2013 will be an exciting and a hardworking year for all of us. Let's Think Family - By Rev. Dr. Samuel Kisseadoo Important lessons of 2012 Christmas for 2013 success
As we look forward into the new year of 2013, each of us has his or her plans, hopes, expectations, resolutions, and aspirations. There are many lessons we learn from the events related to the Birth of Jesus, but I will mention only a few that I have always tried to dig out during Christmas, from my youthful days until now. In addition to the Christmas lessons I outlined in my last Ghanaian News article, we can put all these vital pieces of information together, discuss the salient points, meditate on them, and derive the power and grace that God wants to pour into our lives during this season, and in the years ahead of us. 1) ROLE OF HUSBANDS --- How did Joseph and Mary handle the placenta, blood, and reception of the baby etc. without anyone around? It must have been Joseph taking care of it all. Husbands must learn to be committed to their wives in all matters like Joseph and not run away from some responsibilities as the needs arise. 2) GOD’S PROVISION --- Before God asked Joseph to escape and take the Baby Jesus and His mother Mary to Egypt, He ensured that they had financial security by the provision of gold through the Magi
(Wise men). In the same way, trust God to supply all of your needs in the years ahead, in the midst of a weak and perplexing global economy, so far as you live in obedience to God’s will, and use your blessings and resources wisely to the glory of God. 3) FORGIVENESS --Jesus came down to forgive us of our sins. Do you harbor a spirit of un-forgiveness and hold grudges all the time? You must learn to forgive offences quickly, and assure people that they are forgiven especially after they have genuinely repented of their wrongdoing. We cannot always forgive easily, so let us ask for God’s grace and power to help us. In addition to prayer, you must learn to quote, go over in your mind, and whisper scripture (ex. James 1:20, Ecclesiastes 7:9, Eph. 4:32) to rebuke and erase all thoughts and feelings of hurts, anger, vengeance,
malice, bitterness, and grudges when they try to afflict your mind and heart. Learn to say sorry quickly, when you need to do so as well. 4) PEACEMAKING --- Seek to be a genuine peacemaker, which is an essence of Christmas. God came down in the form of Christ to make peace. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God” (Math. 5:9). Jesus is our peace (Ephesians 2:14). We should note, however, that the peace promised at Christmas is experienced only by those who please God by allowing His Spirit to fill and control them, obeying Him, and allowing the Christ of Christmas to be the Lord over their lives. When Christ was born, the multitude of Angels praised God and clearly said: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased” (Luke 2:14). 5) LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE (Math. 5:16) --The lights at Christmas signify that Christ is the Light of the world. Allow Him to enlighten your mind and heart through meditation on His word and sincere prayer for everything by faith. Your lifestyle of obedience, love, humility, kindness, purity, and holiness, must shine to
convince people that Jesus is the real and only Savior with the ultimate power to change lives. 6) IMPORTANCE OF MARRIAGE AND FAMILY --- Christmas is a family affair, and emphasizes the importance of marriage and family, because God came down as Christ to save us, only in a marriage and family setting. Your courtship, marriage, and family must come first before your friendships, education, work/ career, business, ministry, politics, entertainment, recreation and all. 7) HUMILITY --- Jesus was born in a humble manger among animals to demonstrate His humility, and to tell us that you need not have a great beginning to become great in the end. Today, the Christ born in a manger is the Lord of Lords. It also implies that we had sinned and sank so low to the level of animals, and needed to be redeemed. 8) PROPER USE OF KNOWLEDGE --- Do not be like King Herod and his wise men that knew all the information about the birth of Christ, but never went to look for him, worship Him, and be blessed. Do not merely have head knowledge of Christmas, and celebrate the occasion with food, gifts, decorations, and nice clothing without giving your heart to Christ and experiencing the real power of Christmas. 9) FAITH --- The last words the Angel Gabriel gave to Mary were “With God NOTHING shall be
impossible” (Luke 1:37). Mary immediately responded: “I am a maidservant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). The moment you exercise absolute faith in God’s revealed or spoken word in that fashion, every matter is settled. The angel didn’t need to return, and Mary used her faith to cooperate and set God’s plans into operation until today. God is not just moved by the size of your need, but by the faith you exercise in Him and in His word. Speed up your success and victory by stepping up your faith and trust in God and His promises. 10) INSIGHT --- If the Inn Keeper (hotel manager) had opened his eyes and tuned his spirit to discern that Jesus was in the womb of Mary, he would have given Joseph and Mary a room in his hotel. He missed the opportunity of going on record as the man in whose hotel Jesus was born. “Do not withhold good from those whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do so” (Proverbs 3:27). Watch out and don’t miss grand opportunities from now on, and in the coming year. What we call “lost opportunity” is not really lost; someone will take it and prosper with it. I pray for the Lord’s Presence to be with you, as you seek to obey and walk with Him in a spirit of humility for all of your marriage (or dating and courtship), home, and family affairs. May the Lord work with
you, and bless you abundantly in 2013, and beyond. The Presence of God with us is the primary source of our faith, confidence, hope, and destruction of all kinds of fear. “Fear not, for I am with you, says the Lord…” (Isaiah 41:10). WE WISH YOU A VERY HAPPY, THOUGHTFUL, HOPEFUL, AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR! Obtain more information from Dr. Kisseadoo’s books online from: RedLeadBooks.com or Amazon.com by searching with his name. Quebec common-law partners not entitled to support cont'd from pg. 16 known in the case as Eric. Lola was 17 when she met the then 32-yearo l d e n t r e p r e n e u r. The woman took her case to the Quebec Superior Court in 2009, when a judge rejected her claims, saying that under existing law, partners in a commonlaw relationship have no rights, duties and responsibilities to each other — no matter how many years they’ve lived together. In November 2010, a Quebec Court of Appeal decision invalidated that section of the civil code, saying the law discriminates against unmarried couples, and the province was given one year to change the law. The Quebec government described that ruling as a mistake, and appealed to the Supreme Court. Guy Pratte, the lawyer who argued Lola’s case,
said this morning that he was disappointed with the decision, but it doesn’t mean the matter is settled. “The implication for Quebec society is that the ball is now back in the legislators’ court.” According to Justice Quebec, a cohabitation contract is a legal document that lists all assets brought to a relationship by each individual and sets out the terms by which that property will be divided if an unmarried couple separate. It can include each spouse’s contribution to household expenses and shared responsibility for any debts. In the event of a split, the assets are divided according to the contract and it cannot be altered by the courts after the fact. Quebec Justice Minister Bertrand St-Arnaud said the decision “confirms
the principle of freedom of choice which has always governed life in Quebec, in other words the freedom of couples who choose the rules that will govern their union.” He said there are already a number of options open to unmarried couples who want to be subject to the rights of married couples, including civil unions and a cohabitation contract. St-Arnaud also said it may be time for a “general reflection” on the status of families under the law. “It’s true that in the last decade, our social and family realities have evolved, and is it time for us to start to think again about the regime in our civil code? Maybe.” Nearly 1.4 million Quebecers are in commonlaw relationships, according to the 2011 census, and about 60 per cent of children are born to unmarried couples CBC News.

Bringing the Gospel to our Community By: Rev. Joseph Osei-Amoah REACHING THE NEXT GENERATION “Reaching the next generation” is a deliberate decision to prepare the next generation to step in when the current generation leaves the scene. Since society is never static, nations everywhere have structures and laid down principles through formal education and other forms of training that prepare the younger generation to keep refreshing the older generation until a completely new generation is in place. This natural process of change is such that it does not occur with fanfare that is associated with the inauguration of a new president or the installation of a new government, but takes years to prepare young ones from birth till they reach certain level of maturity and acquire the skills needed to play various roles in society. As the new generation increases in number and the older leaves the scene, the presence of the younger generation becomes obvious. For the last sixty years, I have observed the Christian Church has gone through many changes without considering the changes that have occurred from the time of Christ. This process will continue from time to time until the Lord Jesus returns. What is important is for the followers of the Lord Jesus to ensure that His Gospel remains
constant without any adulteration in order to have positive influence on society, especially those who receive it. The power of the Gospel which was embodied in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ was revealed in the account recorded in Luke 19:1-10. Zacchaeus, a rich chief tax collector, wanted to see the Lord Jesus as He was passing through the former’s home town of Jericho. He failed in his initial attempt because his small stature prevented him from seeing Jesus who was surrounded by people taller than himself. He was so determined to see the Lord that he ran ahead of the crowd and climbed into a sycamore tree by the side of the road. To his surprise, Lord Jesus stopped under the tree, looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your home.” (Luke 19:5 NKJV) While hosting the Lord, Zacchaeus offered to give half of his wealth to the poor, and added that if he had cheated people on their taxes he would give them back four times as much. Immediately the Lord Jesus responded, “Salvation had come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” (Luke 19:9-10 New Living Translation) Instantly transformed had
taken place in the heart of that greedy tax collector. Earlier some people in the crowd were criticizing Jesus for associating Himself with a man who was a social outcast. But the Lord declared that the Son of Man came to seek and to save people like the tax collector. Two things happened to Zacchaeus that day: (1) he believed Jesus was the Son of God which resulted in his new birth by the Spirit of God (John 3: 3-8); (2) the moral transformation that had taken place in his life revealed a new attitude toward the people he had cheated. The Lord, through the Holy Spirit has given us this ministry of reconciliation. “Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5:18) This powerful work of the Holy Spirit that became obvious in the life of Zacchaeus is what we are expected to transfer to the next generation through teaching of the word of God and prayer.
In Mark 10:1316, as the Lord Jesus was ministering in Judea, some parents brought their little children to Him that He would touch and bless them but the disciples rebuked the parents for worrying Him. The Lord was not happy with the behavior of the disciple and told them to allow the little children to come to Him for the Kingdom of God belonged to those who were like those children and warned that, “anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” (Mark 10:15 New Living Translation) This statement of the Lord gives the clue that it is easier to lead a child to accept the Lord Jesus as his or her Savior than leading an adult. The Apostle Paul, who opposed the ministry of Jesus for many years after his conversion wrote, “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved it is the power of God…For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek
one is to implement the “presidential priority projects”, as our new President Mahama calls them, he will need money and not mere talk, as some previous Presidents have done in the last few decades. We strongly recommend for the President to throw out of his mind the old myth that there are some European and American taxpayers who will cough up money for him to build schools and Universities or water systems for his people. Ghanaians have enough well qualified people around the world. The
Ghanaian people also pay one of the highest duties and taxes on the African continent. We strongly recommend for the President to sit down with his Ministers of Finance and these Project Directors and use a computer Spreadsheet to itemize Revenue sources and Project costs and then crack the whip. This takes long hours and days of thinking and planning. However, it can be done as others have done! We wish our best to the President. May God bless Ghana and the good people of Ghana.
we have been assigned to serve as “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:13-14 NKJV)The Lord Jesus commands us to “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5: 15) He wants our life to affect those who are yet to trust in Him, just as His life caused a change in Zacchaeus’ life. He also expects our attitude towards strangers reflect the life of Christ. In our commitment to reach the next generation parents have very important responsibility of raising their children in the fear of God (Proverbs 22: 6). Churches must assist parents to fulfill their God-given responsibility to impart their faith to their children when they are still young. (Deuteronomy 6:4-7) As it is natural for parents to love their children, even so they must guide them when they make mistakes and discipline them when they go wayward and must not fail to pray for them every day. (Proverbs 13:1; 19:18; 29:17)

Ghana’s Cabinet and Executive Appointments: Ref: Mahama appoints more ministers job more like a Management job, not like a Preacher. He should not act like a big African Chief with women’s cloth spread on the ground for him to step on while his people die of preventable causes such as malaria, lack of water and decent clean living conditions, and unable to compete globally due to poverty caused by ignorance of how the world works, and leadership neglect. The President should be conscious of public funds as if they were his own family budget. Basic management would demand that if
after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18, 22-24 NKJV) While it is easier to lead a child to receive the Lord Jesus as Savior, it is also true that next generation we need to reach for the Lord are not all young children. However, the quicker we reach the little ones, the more we can prevent some of the murders committed by young people in our societies recently. Unfortunately after the tragic event at Newtown, Connecticut, people younger than 20 years have either attempted or succeeded in killing innocent people. In our own community in Canada, a young woman has been brutally murdered and the suspect is also a young person. This is a small evidence of the moral decay and the spiritual darkness hovering over our world, against which

The Ghanaian News January 2013
Around the Ghana Sports Scene Ghana’s technical team happy with Gyan’s performance at AFCON Asamoah Gyan in an aerial tussle for the ball Maxwell Konadu says the Ghana technical team is satisfied with the performance of striker Asamoah Gyan at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. The 27-year-old is yet to score for the Black Stars after two games in the tournament. Gyan’s mini-goal drought in South Africa has raised some concerns over his sharpness up front as the lone striker for the Black Stars. But the team’s assistant coach insists expectations of the technical team has been met by Gyan– stressing on the Al Ain striker’s overall team play.
Wakaso outshines Keita in Ghana win over Mali Wakaso reigned supreme in the battle for midfield supremacy
“Asamoah Gyan’s vital passes has given us the two goals,” Konadu said at a press conference at the team’s hotel on Friday. “It is your opinion (on Gyan’s below-par performance) and I respect that but we think he has
done very well so far.” Gyan has scored 30 goals in 65 appearances for Ghana and is now just three goals shy of equaling the record of all-time leading scorer for the Black Stars currently held by ex Ghana captain Abedi Pele. Ghana Soccer Net
Emmanuel Lartei Lartey upsets hometown favorite Michael "Slick" Anderson to win the USCB regional Welterweight title
:Ghana’s welterweight Emanuel “Ice Cold” Lartei Lartey, now living in The Co-Op City section of the Bronx, New York, may have scored the biggest win of his career thus far by a unanimous decision over Newark’s Michael “Slick”Anderson in front of Anderson’s hometown fans this past Saturday night, January 19, 2013. Lartei Lartey, throwing punches from all angles and in bunches, overwhelmed the three judges at ringside who
with Jonathan Annobil
all scored the bout in his favor, 97-92, 9793 and 97-93. And it wasn’t even that close.
From round one, Lartei Lartey, the undefeated southpaw who captained the Ghanaian National Team as an amateur, pressured Anderson with pouches to the body and to the head, never letting “Slick,” as Anderson is nicknamed, get comfortable. What resulted was a lopsided victory for Lartey, now
called “Ice Cold,” by his Eastcoast fans and followers. His manager, Attorney Eric Okyere Darko says “Lartey is on a mission and that mission is to become the welterweight champion of the world. He’s worked long and hard to get to the top and his perseverance is starting to pay off.”
Lartei Lartey, now 140-1, 7 KO’s, hopes to appear next on the Golden Boy Promotions card in March, 2013 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. After beating Anderson, Lartei Lartey says, “I’m ready for whoever Golden Boy wants to match me with.”I know no promoter is going to put me in an easy fight but that’s okay with me. I’m excited because my dream is starting to become a reality.”
G h a na’s Mubarak Wakaso reigned supreme in the midfield battle against Seydou Keita in the 1-0 win over Mali on Thursday. The Black Stars posted their first win of the campaign at the 2013 Nations Cup to get their title aspirations back on track. As expected in the pre-match, the midfield will be a keenly contested area with experienced Seydou Keita a linchpin in the Malian team.
But Ghana youngster Mubarak Wakaso as also expressed in the pre-match set out to neutralize Keita’s prowess – a task he carried out with distinction as the ex Barcelona star failed to hit his stride on Thursday. Wakaso had said before the game: “I know Keita. I played against him when he was in Spain with FC Barcelona. “He is a good player but I am not afraid and not under any pressure to play against him.” It was evidently clear
after the game at the Nelson Mandela bBay Stadium that the Espanyol player emerged victor in the mini battle. He took his penalty very well – leaving goalkeeper Mamadou Sammasa with absolutely no chance while remaining solid in his midfield position. The 22-year-old however got booked for lifting his shirt in his goal celebration but all in all was mile ahead of no.1 threat of Mali Seydou Keita. Ghana Soccer Net
Ghana yet to reach their peak Coach Kwesi Appiah Ghana are yet to reach their peak at 2013 Africa Cup of Nations but coach Kwesi Appiah points out that his side have a solid foundation to attain such heights. The Black Stars settled for a 2-2 draw in their opening Group B game in Port Elizabeth against DR Congo, but since then have calmly dealt with the expectation by beating Mali 1-0 on Thursday to jump top in the group. After allowing two goals in their opener, Ghana
kept a clean sheet in their last match as they now set their sights on making it to the knockout stages of the African competition. And for Appiah, Ghana has a base on which to hit their stride as the competition continues. “We’ve still got much to offer,” Appiah said after their victory over Mali. “We can do much, much better than what we did today [against Mali] and we just hope that we keep going and we will see more of that.”
Kwesi Appiah’s team now have a final group game against Niger on Monday to worry about as they top the Group B standings with four points from their opening two matches. However, the Ghana coach is happy with the improved level of concentration exhibited and hopes they can carry it throughout. “From what I see now, they were very tactically disciplined and what I expected them to do was what they did.”
Ghana protest against females in Afcon stadiums The ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) says it is shocked and appalled at reports that some of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) teams gearing up to play in the upcoming continental tournament feel women in stadiums are bad luck. “It is a travesty that in a country such as South Africa the whims of these teams would be considered by our local organisers,” the ANCWL said via a statement released to the media on Thursday. If reports in thesportsinghana website are to be believed women will not be allowed to occupy the lower level of the Nelson Mandela
Bay Stadium where the players’ change rooms are located. This comes after Ghana, DR Congo, Mali and Niger apparently raised objections. “We were told that in north Africa, women bring bad luck to teams and also that they are associated with witchcraft,” one of AFCON’s local woman organisers told the Daily Sun. The ANCWL says the claims are nothing short of “absurd”. “South African women are ardent soccer supporters and it is insulting to have them discriminated in this manner based on the
nonsensical belief that women bring bad luck. “The ANCWL is confident that this discrimination against women will not see the light of day and AFCON will rectify this with immediate effect. Never in the history of sports events hosted in South Africa has the ANCWL ever heard of such absurdity. “We call on all women sports fans to refuse this kind of treatment and demand the equal rights enshrined in our constitution.” Bafana Bafana kick-off the tournament when they face the Cape Verde Islands at the National Stadium on Saturday.
