Ghana's President John Evans Atta-Mills dies at 68 By: Dr. Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB The President of Ghana, John Evans Fiifi AttaMills died on Tuesday afternoon at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra. His shocking death came only three days after celebrating his 68th birthday on a low key with orphans in Accra. He is said to have died from an acute cardiac arrest. The death of the President was announced in a statement released from from the Presidency by the Chief of Staff John Henry Martey Newman. In it he said: “it is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that we announce the sudden untimely death of the President of the Republic of Ghana - His Excellency, John Evans Atta Mills.”

On the day of his return, the President jogged on the tarmac towards the VIP Lounge at the Kotoka International Airport jokingly challenging the media and on-lookers to see how “fit” he was. This follows earlier rumours before he left for the United States that he was “dead”. To prove that he was “fit”, President Mills went round commissioning projects across the country. He recently indicated his preparedness to contest the 2012 General Elections There were reports on the social media before his departure that he had passed away.
“The death occurred at the 37 Military Hospital this afternoon while receiving medical attention while receiving medical attention after being taken ill a few hours ago.” This makes him the first President since Ghana’s independence to have died while in office. Mills won the Presidency on his third attempt in the 2008 general elections in close run-off election on December 28th, 2008 and took office as the 3rd President of the 4th Republic on January 7, 2009. Rumors of President Mills failing health had been widely reported in Ghana for months and almost throughout his three and half years as President. He recently returned from the United States of

Mahama was first elected to the Parliament of Ghana in 1996 to represent the Bole/
Bamboi Constituency for a four-year term. In April 1997, Mr. Mahama was appointed Deputy Minister of Communications. He rose to become the substantive Minister of Communications by November 1998; it was a position he held until January 2001 when the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which was the current ruling party, handed over power to the newly elected New Patriotic Party’s government. In 2000, Mahama was reelected for another fouryear term as the Member of Parliament for the Bole/ Bamboi Constituency. He was again re-elected in 2004
for a third term. From 2001 to 2004, Mahama served as the Minority Parliamentary Spokesman for Communications. In 2002, he was appointed the Director of Communications for the NDC. Mahama has seven children. He is married to Lordina Mahama. The National Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) announced on Thursday July 26 after an emergency meeting that the party will meet at a special Congress on September 1st 2012 to confirm President John Mahama as its Flagbearer for the 2012 Presidential Elections
