31 Ghanaian-Canadians Honored at Glittering Awards Night in Toronto By Dr. Michael Baffoe, Toronto
The 13 th edition of the prestigious GhanaianCanadian Achievement Aw a r d s N i g h t w a s held at the Clairport Banquet Hall in Toronto on Sunday September 22, 2013. Thirty-one Ghanaian-Canadians from various fields of endeavor from across Canada were honoured for their achievements in their various fields. These were in the fields of Professional Excellence, High Academic Achievements, Business Promotion, Community Service, Cultural Promotion, Sports, Entertainment and Music. The event was attended by
a number of community members and a good turn-out of business and political leaders from the Federal, Provincial and Municipal levels of government. Also represented as usual were representatives from the Toronto Police and York Regional Police Departments. Among the many dignitaries were The Fairness Commissioner of Ontario, Dr. Jean Augustine, York West MP, Judy Sgro, Scarbourough-Agincourt MP, Jim Karygianis and Etobicoke North MP, Kirsty Duncan. This clarion call was made by Mr Joseph K. Amankrah, a mechanical engineer and a community activist, when he delivered this year’s keynote address at the 13th Annual Ghanaian Canadian Achievement Awards night on

The Death of Ghanaian Towns and Cities By Kwaku A. Danso As Ghanaian small towns and even cities struggle for entry into the civilized era with issues and need for the simple basics like water, sewage, schools under trees, poor or non-available electricity and communication systems, a Ghanaian lady called Jacqueline, a member of the NIA for Ghana Forum wrote: “I once believe the Town Council had the right to take up these responsibilities such as maintaining the common areas of Housing and Development Board, Street maintenance and lighting, drainage, refuse collection, public cemeteries, infrastructure, parks and playgrounds, safe drinking water and you name them. Honestly I don’t know which Town Council exist in Ghana now as I write this and effectively execute its task.” (Jacqueline A., NIA for Ghana, Wednesday, October 03, 2012 2:47 AM) Let me use this to initiate a short dialogue and elaboration on the death of our towns and cities under misguided military and dictatorial rule in the last four decades, and how failure in leadership has killed our cities and towns. After 30 years under the military dictatorship of the PNDC and the continuation NDC aura, Ghanaians as a people are today very confused. The 11 year rule under a dictatorship quelled the spirit of the people, and perhaps never got revived. There is a generational gap existing between those of us who saw some of colonial rule, some of Nkrumah’s rule and the advent of the capable black man and prideful marketable “African personality”, and some of you who may have seen and think “revolutionary talk” and insulting the white man is all we have to do as Dr. Kwesi Botchwey excelled in, to get grants
and loans, and divert and share a large chunk of the money among top executives without delivering services to the people. Ghana lost a sense of ethics, sense of morality and a sense of direction. The shout for accountability was a sham! Most members of the PNDC settled down to getting whatever they could loot from the public service and connections. When democracy was ushered in again in 1992 the aura of fear had not subsided till very late in the 8 year rule. Men like Kwamena Ahwoi made sure the PNDC boys would appoint all DCEs and Agency heads, and all towns and regions were totally neglected in the equation. Assemblymen of the towns, elected, were mere volunteers without pay. The people who are paid, with al the benefits and power, were and are all appointed by the President, more than 4,000 of them in Ghana! Is that democracy? The total confusion in leadership and management direction led to the atrophy of our towns since I saw it in the 1950s as a child. Today even rich towns like my hometown Abetifi, and educational town with a Training College and a University, as I have written before, are confused. Some of our rich folks are donating money, and some of our Diaspora folks bring in gifts for the town clinic but nobody can sit and design a budget of what we need for say a public park, library, computers, schools, salaries and wages of workers and staff and a Town Hall building and vehicles. I have done all many

Such Arithmetic is hard to do by hand as to how much each household should pay to make this town sparkle like any other American town and bring jobs and the educated folks back home with pride!! I was going to my town almost every weekend or two in 2004 to 2006 I was in Ghana on extended periods. By 2009 when I went home I was sorely disappointed the elders and colleagues could not take my idea they all agreed on and work to create the town council and get their water system revived. The spirit in Ghanaian towns died over the last four decades. This water system had been neglected for about two decades since officials claimed there were leakages due to broken pipes. It was a beautiful water treatment system set up under Nkrumah in Nkwatia, 3 miles down the hill from Abetifi. The townspeople could easily have contributed to purchase whatever equipment was needed and fixed it for use by all. However there was no sense of organizational ownership. Every rich man in Ghana thinks he can live in a bubble with his wife and children. I was so downhearted and confused trying to figure out the “organizational intelligence” of the people I was born among,, many of who are so rich and successful individually but cannot see this simple vision that we don’t need the boys in Accra to do things for us and our children in the town!! I made a small slight of tongue in a 2008 conversation with the association Secretary and I wonder if that contributed to any reduced initiative. I said that “the government had failed us”, and I think the man may have taken it very politically that I was criticizing the NPP. He told me I was wrong and the government was in the process of getting water from the Affram Plains, etc. I dropped the matter and it’s been more than 4 years now! Oh! God!! Debatably, Honourable Nana Akufo-Addo, Ghana’s main Opposition Leader and the New P a t r i o t i c P a r t y ’s presidential candidate for the December 2012 elections put the interest and democratic well being of Ghana above any other consideration and helped spare our dear country from what could have resulted in a serious post-election violence. By his words and deeds, Nana AkufoAddo has immensely helped to solidify G h a n a ’s d e m o c r a t i c reputation. His prompt decision to concede defeat after the Supreme Court of Ghana’s verdict regarding the contested outcome of last year’s election, in my view, is unparalleled in African politics. He did the right thing for the love of his country. His concession perhaps explains why the much dreaded political turmoil akin to what has transpired in other African countries in recent times never came to bear in Ghana as predicted by many people. It has been appropriately one month since the Supreme Court’s ruling over the election petition, but echoes of disappointment or jubilation associated with the verdict still linger. To this end, I want to give credit to all the various political leaders who worked hard to get us to where we are today as a nation, which has demonstrated its firm belief in democratic governance. I single out Nana Akufo-Addo and sing his accolade for being a true patriot of our country. The reason for my new found admiration for the seasoned politician is not mind-boggling. The man is a true democrat because his simple act of courageousness and selflessness helped in no small way to avert what could have likely resulted in a serious political instability in our country. Ghana nervously witnessed high tension political drama in the lead up to, and in the
immediate aftermath of the December 2012 elections and not to mention the subsequent Supreme Court’s petition proceedings with the resultant ruling on August 29. Our country came to the brink of serious political turbulence, but thank goodness for the calibre of leaders like Nana Akufo-Addo, common sense and love for the country prevailed over any other considerations. Akufo-Addo’s move has essentially allowed Ghana to further solidly its democratic credentials and secured its deserved place among the community of peace-loving nations. Through his words and actions, I hasten to point out that Nana Akufo-Addo singlehandedly neutralized what could have easily turned into post-election violent situation. To me, his timely appeal to his supporters across the country to accept the August 29 Supreme Court’s ruling demonstrates a true sense of patriotism. First of all, he chose the path of peace by challenging the election results at the highest court of the land and not by violence on the streets as it has frequently been the case in other parts of Africa. He did the right thing and exhibited wisdom and political maturity as well as establishing precedence, which is unfamiliar to most African political leaders that purport to believe in democratic governance, but insinuate violence when election outcomes do not go their way. A l l t h e characteristics that plunged other African countries into postelection violence were visibly present in the Ghanaian political scene during and after last year’s elections. And some unscrupulous politicians and media practitioners did not help matters by spewing venomous language and flaming into an already tense situation. It is in this context that the leadership of Nana Akufo-
Addo must be extolled for first of all, resorting to the proper democratic channels in challenging the outcome of the elections. He similarly needs to be commended for accepting the Supreme Court’s election ruling on the petition. From my standpoint, the man displayed exemplary and quality leadership. He also demonstrated his firm belief in the rule of law. By simply seeking refuge in the courts of law, Nana Akufo-Addo has set an excellent example for other political leaders in Ghana and the rest of Africa. His decision also possibly saved the day and perhaps avoided the huge cost of postelection violence and its toll on the nation’s economy. Nana AkufoAddo’s pronouncements and deeds following the August 29 ruling are clear testament of his principled stance that it is not worth compromising peace and security in Ghana for the presidency. Post-election violence has over the years ruined many African countries because of some political leaders’ often failure to concede defeat. In Kenya for example, the current president is being tried in absentia at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for allegedly contributing to that country’s brutal post-election violence in 2008. Perhaps if President Uhuru Kenyatta had chosen democratic channels to challenge the disputed election results or considered it appropriate to concede defeat at that time as Nana Akufo-Addo did in December 2012 and also following the August 29 petition ruling by the Supreme Court, Kenya would have been spared the post-election violence. This shows that the contrast between Honourable AkufoAddo and other African political leaders is stark. His decision and action epitomise his profound love for Ghana and by extension for Africa.

Province Offers Online Driver’s Licence Renewal Ontario Making it Easier to Access Important Government Services Ontario is now allowing drivers to renew their licences online -- the first province in Canada to do so. Ontario drivers need to renew their licences every five years. Now, eligible drivers who renew online at ServiceOntario.ca/DriversLicence will be able to use their existing licence photos for an additional five-year renewal cycle, meaning they will only need to renew in person every ten years. When drivers renew their licences online, they can also get licence plate stickers, driver abstracts and other driver and vehicle products in the same transaction. Offering more online services is part of the Ontario government’s plan to help people in their everyday lives
and make it easier for them to access important government services, when and where they need them. The new online driver’s licence renewal service is added to the more than 40 services already offered online. These include renewing licence plate stickers, changing addresses and applying for birth, death or marriage certificates. ServiceOntario processed more than 1.6 million driver ’s licence renewal transactions last year. Drivers can now use Interac® Online, in addition to major credit cards, to pay online. Province to create new gov’t financial watchdog
TORONTO -- The first bill introduced in the fall session of the Ontario legislature will create a new independent financial watchdog for legislative spending. Finance Minister Charles Sousa says he will introduce legislation today to create a financial accountability officer, a key demand of the New Democrats in exchange for supporting the minority government’s budget. Most questions about the new watchdog centred around the Liberals’ decisions to cancel two gas plants at a cost of at least $585 million, but Sousa says the new watchdog wouldn’t have been involved in that situation. It was revealed last week that Torontoarea Tory Peter Shurman billed the maximum $20,719 last year after moving to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Opposition Leader Tim Hudak issued a statement Sunday saying that he had removed Shurman as the party’s finance critic. The Canadian Press
Freeze EI premiums for three years: Flaherty OTTAWA-- Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says employment insurance premiums will be frozen for the next three years. Flaherty says previously planned rate hikes are no longer necessary, and the freeze will save businesses and workers $660 million next year. The premium rate will remain at the 2013 level of $1.88 per $100 of insurance earnings. Flaherty says the unemployment rate has been falling and EI account is on track to return to balance sooner than expected. He notes that 60 per cent of the cost of EI premiums is borne by employers, and the freeze will promote hiring. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says it’s happy with the announcement. Harper won’t take no for an answer on Keystone XL With the fate of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline still in the hands of U.S. President Barack Obama five years on, Prime Minister Stephen Harper told a crowd of business leaders gathered in New York that he will not take no for an answer. Harper, who participated in a question and answer session with the Canadian American Business Council on the second day of his visit to New York Thursday afternoon, said “my view is you don’t take no for an answer.”
“We haven’t had that but if we were to get that, that won’t be final. This won’t be final until it’s approved and we will keep pushing forward,” Harper said.

The Average Ghanaian Loves To Take The Easy Way Out By Kwaku Adu-Gyamfi This is what is wrong with most of us: We love to take the easier- way -out just to beat the system and acquire many toys and mansions . No, you don’t have to be a fortune- teller. You can’t see into the mind of an average Ghanaian. And you don’t need to know his history, college degree, or family background. All you need to do is spend a day with him, listen to what he says and watch what he does. His words and actions are going to tell you where his head and heart are .It’s most likely that his mind and heart are programmed to take the easy road all the time. We embrace wickedness and trailer trash our value system, all the while claiming to be God –fearing people as we gleefully break every part of the biblical commandments---onward Christian soldiers we’re marching on to immorality. The prospects are indeed dim that we’ll change any time soon. You’re mad, aren’t you? Well, I don’t really care how many times I’m going to pluck your fragile heartstrings and ego in this piece. So grow up and whet your appetite! Yes, I know I have lost some of you already, haven’t I? The overly –sensitive folks out there may have their blood pressure soar about this piece. Now, before some of you go ballistic and start blowing your brain gasket or write tacky comments, you have to understand my statements apply to majority of Ghanaians, most of the time. They’re generalizations that are perfect for 99.9percent of the population for 99.9 percent of the time---yours truly included. There are a FEW exceptions and you may have one. I get it!! So retract the claws and take a chill pill. Yes, I understand that things are tough and times are hard—but there will always be people looking for the easy road to success regardless of their socio-economic status, education, and income or family background. The average Ghanaians, (especially the new generations) are looking for redemption; for a cause that validates their very existence. They want family and strong sense of community, but they may accomplish that desire through a social network; where there is never any physical contact or presence. Yes, they want to make a sustaining impact on the world and in their communities, but they resist the methods of traditional well-rounded knowledge of culture, business and strategies needed .Yes, they want to be educated, but they don’t have the time or pa-
tience to sit in a traditional classroom chair for years. In essence, they want to take the easy road to accomplish their goals and success with no sweat. Unfortunately, the sad part is that most of us don’t know that if we take the easy way out all the time we’re practically living a life which is too SMALL. We can’t live large life if we want to take the easy way out –period! Yes, we’ve a sickness in our society; if you say that someone is successful it’s automatically imply that the person has a lot of money. However, living large life doesn’t necessarily mean a bigger salary, mansions at East Legon, cars, or retirement fund. It has nothing to do with fancy vacations or latest fashions. Rather, it means having a life that is full of meaning and purpose and that can occur--or be absent—at any place of the traditional parameters of success .In fact, I have seen and read about millionaires who are living life “Small” and those with scarce financial resources who are living life “Large”. Repeat after me: If you aren’t sweating, you’re probably doing it wrong. And, in order to be able to live LARGE and stop looking for easy way out we have to be extraordinary Ghanaians; not average. “How can you say that”? Please don’t get me started!! Look, there are 275 MPs in the Parliament from different political parties and different backgrounds. The question is: How many souls in the House who are not devoid of humility, humanity and agility and able to stand up with guts and be counted for decency, thoughtfulness and prudence and not put politics above everything else? Who are there for the interest of the nation and the people who voted for them? Ghana is desperately craving for real heroes and heroines to lead her into the socio-economic Promised Land, but where are they? I rest my case!! This is just a warmup so don’t go anywhere! Let me tell you, one doesn’t come to selfcenteredness, apathy or crime or corruption by the tyranny of fate or circumstance, but by the pathway of groveling
thoughts and base desires. Nor does a pure-minded person fall suddenly into crime or thoughtlessness by stress of any mere external force; the criminal thought had long been secretly fostered in the heart, and the hour of opportunity revealed its gathered power. No such conditions can exist as descending into vice and its attendant sufferings apart from vicious inclinations, or ascending into virtue and its pure happiness without the continued cultivation of virtuous aspirations. Many people take the easy- way- out because they feel good about it but tell themselves they don’t have the time to take the other road. They resort to sakawa and magic oils, but, we all know very well that the road to success is bumpy and uphill. That is the way life is. Again, if you’re not sweating you’re probably doing it wrong. On top of all that and our sense- of- entitlement syndrome, we have also developed pathetic- whining disorder because we have convinced ourselves that we deserve everything. But, when work is involved we can’t be bothered. The funny thing is that those who complain the loudest about not having an opportunity in life are usually the ones who have no idea what they really want and where they’re going. How many hours a week do you spend in quiet contemplation? The average Ghanaians (politicians included) don’t read a non-fiction book after graduating from High School. An average Ghanaian is always busy hatching up plans to dupe someone or the system. An Average Ghanaian spends nearly six hours a day watching television or being on the face-book or sending text- messages. An average Ghanaian parent spends only 3.5 minutes per week in meaningful conversation with their children. Television has become the baby- sitter in our homes. Am I getting you upset enough yet? Stay with me! Do I have low opinion of an average Ghanaian? No! But, when a group of people expect less from themselves they tend to transfer the same low -expectations to their government , politicians ,Police personnel, pastors, parents, leaders, policy makers, employers ,employees, hospital attendants and our children’s children . Sadly, we’re very cheesy on integrity therefore we expect our political and community leaderships to be cheesy on integrity .That’s why we’re never surprised when they screw-up and cont'd on pg. 14

Teachers in the member states of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization celebrate the day the world over. The ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers was adopted on 5 October 1966 at a special intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in Paris in cooperation with the ILO. The convention sets forth the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and international standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions. Since then the work of teachers around the world is recognized each year exactly on October 5. I remember the car sticker in Ghana during the 1980s which read: IF YOU CAN READ THIS, THANK A TEACHER.

How true! It is very true that we all remember moments when an inspiring teacher opened our eyes to something wonderful. Moments like those are happening every day in our schools. As a lifelong teacher, I can testify to this. Ghana like many other countries around the world has, over the years, sought to improve its education system by introducing reforms and making projections based on the education needs of the country. How sincere are these reforms to making the teacher more effective in the delivery of knowledge to students in the classroom? Are teachers well prepared and taken good care of by governments
World Teachers’ Day message issued in 2007 states, “The challenge is more than one of numbers. The quality of teachers and teaching is also essential to good learning outcomes. This implies an education system that attracts and retains a well-trained, motivated, effective and gender-balanced teaching staff; it implies a system that supports teachers in the classroom, as well as in their continued professional d e v e l o p m e n t . Dissatisfaction with loss in status, low salaries, poor teaching and learning conditions, and lack of career progression or adequate professional training have driven large numbers of teachers out of the profession, sometimes after only a few years of service.” Teachers must be the pivot for ensuring successful learning process sought after in any education reform. They are expected to bring equality learning experiences to the students they (teachers)
teach. Unfortunately, teachers in Ghana are often thought of less when education reforms are put in place. Unlike, teachers in Canada who have formidable unions to fight for their rights and seek better deals with their governments as I have come to know, teachers in Ghana have weak associations which fight more among themselves than against ‘uncaring’ government educational policies which down play teachers interest and at the same time up load their responsibilities. It is suggested that more recruitment, full and appropriate teacher training, better targeted deployment and management, salary and incentives which compare favorably with those in other occupations requiring similar qualifications, better working and living conditions, ongoing professional support and opportunities for career development are all crucial to meet the new challenges that face education everywhere. We should all be reminded
that teaching is a noble profession. From the days of Socrates to the time of Paul of the Bible students/ graduates had spoken highly of their teachers (also called masters in some instances). The Holy Bible mentions teaching as one of the three top spiritual gifts from God that we must desire most for the growth of His church (read 1 Corth. 12:28). Interesting! Te a c h e r s m a k e t h e medical doctors, the lawyers, the accountants, the engineers, the agriculturists, the musicians, the pastors, the politicians, the nurses, the computer analysts and many other workers who contribute effectively to the building of a nation anywhere. Education has been the major facilitator and catalyst in the astonishing changes and transformation sweeping through the world today. The role of formal (school) education in the liberation of the individual mind as well as economic dependence and in national development is therefore quite obvious. Thus, education pays
off not only in literacy but also in income! It is therefore quite obvious that education is very imperative to the sound development of individuals and nations. Every country ought to provide its people with qualitative and “not only quantitative” education! And every parent ought to ensure that his or her child gets the best of formal education as much as possible. Undoubtedly, education is the biggest enterprise in any civilized society. Teachers play an important role in this enterprise. Their training, distribution and maintenance as professionals anywhere must be given serious attention. Together we must fight to give our children everywhere the education they need. Knowledge is Power, but ignorance is a disease. And teachers who are the facilitators of learning, which is the process of acquiring knowledge at school deserve better! H A P P Y T E A C H E R S ’ D AY

“We want to stop early and forced marriages, and I think that we all believe we can do that in a generation,” Baird said later. “It involves a legal response, it involves changing societal values, and it involves changing customs and other practices.”
Complications from pregnancy and giving birth at a young age can result in severe maternal disability or even death. But Baird refused to say whether Canada would fund groups that provide medically necessary abortions to girls who are forced to marry and become pregnant.
He cited as a “powerful call for action” a recent report by a Torontobased legal aid group that that found young girls from Canada are being forced to travel abroad in order to participate in forced marriages.
On Monday, Baird was scheduled to speak to the General Assembly on Canada’s behalf -a job opposition critics in Ottawa have said ought to fall to Harper.

The “Courts” are not to Blame: Why Ghanaian Political Parties have a moral obligation and incentive to ensure the implementation of voting rules
By Dr. Francis Wiafe-Amoako, Toronto The main question that this article asks is which entity should bear the responsibility for making sure that voting rules are implemented, and that every voter’s vote is duly counted. If I may suggest a few, this may include the Electoral Commission (EC), Election Observers (both local and foreign), civil society organizations, security services, ordinary Ghanaian, the Supreme Court, and the political parties that contest the elections. In our Ghanaian politicking, and that of other African states, it is becoming or seems to be the norm that election results are judged as rigged by the losing party, and that some ballots should either be added or thrown out. The casting of votes, the proper count of such votes, and a legitimate winner declared, is a fundamental piece of democratic consolidation. I applaud the fact that Ghana has made a tremendous headway in her political life by accepting some form of a process that chooses the leadership of the country. Such a process eliminates uncertainties and tensions about a political outcome. Over time, a political process such as we have in Ghana, could establish a political legitimacy framework and potentially avoid pre and post-election societal
instabilities. Since 1992 when the Fourth Republic was ushered in, it became evident that Ghanaians ha ve c hos en a two party system which has prevailed until today. Because the electorate is almost evenly split between the two leading parties- New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC)-, it is not uncommon, and rightly so, to see the losing party cry foul when the other party is declared the winner. It is also the reality that either of these two main political parties could find itself at the winning or the losing end come elections. I tweaked Ola Rotimi’s novel title, “The Gods Are Not To Blame,” a little bit for the title of this article “The Courts are Not To Blame” to bring our attention to the political lessons that we can draw from this novel. For lack of space, I will not tell the story here. However, I will like to state clearly here that out of the list provided above, political parties should, in reality, view the
Constitutional provision and electoral laws asking them to petition a “Court” regarding irregularities in the electoral outcome as a façade. This is not in any way to disrespect our esteemed Courts; neither is it to render such legal provisions of no significance, but rather to add to the many voices encouraging political parties to be active actors in implementing voting rules. Political parties have the most to gain and lose from an election outcome, and thus have the utmost incentive to protect voting rules. At the famous “Judgment Day” ruling by the Ghana Supreme Court, the Court threw away the petitioner’s (NPP) case for redress regarding electoral improprieties at several polling stations during the 2012 elections. Since then, many have tried to vilify the Court regarding the verdict. Obviously the Supreme Court has a job to do – upholding the Constitution of the country. We therefore accord them the highest responsibility to do the right things based on the arguments and evidence presented before the Court by the litigating parties. On a broader note, the Court’s decision serves as a precedent for future elections challenges. Parties should realize that the Court may have the tendency to uphold the Electoral Commission’s
decision. The Court’s decision may not be palatable today; however, there is no reason to doubt that the same decision, as a precedent, will put a good taste in a party’s mouth in the future when the tables are turned. The Electoral Commission (EC) has the constitutional responsibility to implement electoral and voting rules. The EC is expected to ensure proper communication of voting rules and procedures to the respective parties. When an unexpected situation regarding voting rules occur on election day, the EC in consultation with party representatives may determine whether or not the situation is material to influence the election results. When such a decision is made, the EC has its reputation to protect and will not have an incentive to overturn a previous election decision. In fact, such an overturn would impact negatively on the
credibility of the EC and hurt our democracy. I will re-iterate here that the political parties’ representatives must be legitimate, well informed, and motivated enough to ensure that they are focused on achieving the party’s objectives. Political parties contest to win elections, and must be adequately prepared to achieve that objective. After a successful electioneering campaign, the final offensive step is the one on the “battle ground” (polling stations) on the day of the election. Political parties have all the incentive to ensure that every vote is counted. To re-iterate, Ghanaian political parties have the moral responsibility to honor voters by ensuring that every vote is rightly counted at the polling stations. The polling station is where the final election battle is, and therefore attention should be focussed at those places. Parties
have the resources and organization to ensure effective implementing of the voting rules which include the counting of every vote casted. Litigating an election outcome at the Court is just an extra burdenedcost that could be saved. A responsibility to ensure that votes are properly counted at polling stations would not be too much to ask of them considering the cost that parties have already incurred during the campaign period. Thus, the Supreme Court should not be blamed for the verdict rendered. The system we have is not perfect, but we can ensure that the existing rules are fully implemented and additional ones developed. I am glad that some eminent individuals in the country, the president, and other international well-wishers are ready to reform the electoral rules for a better outcome going forward.

Oh, check out the way we handle our river bodies, natural resources and everything else. Aren’t you proud of Ghana’s accomplishments, degradation and its future prospect? Charles Taylor war crimes convictions upheld A UN-backed special court in The Hague has rejected an appeal against war crimes convictions by lawyers representing former Liberian President Charles Taylor. It ruled that his convictions had been proved beyond doubt. Taylor appeared impassive in court as the judge upheld his convictions and 50-year sentence. He was sentenced in May 2012 for aiding rebels who committed atrocities in Sierra Leone during its civil war. His lawyers had argued that there were legal errors during his trial. Charles Taylor listened intently in court, as his appeal against his conviction for war crimes was rejected point by point. Dressed in a dark suit and light yellow tie, he began taking notes in the back of a small desk diary. But he wrote less as it became clear that his appeal was going to be unsuccessful. At one stage, there was a small shake of the head as the chief judge outlined the wide range of Mr
Taylor’s support for rebel groups in Sierra Leone. He stood to hear a summary of the appeal decision, his hands resting on the desk below him. But there was no other visible display of emotion, even when the judge listed some of the horrific crimes for which he has been convicted, crimes that had ‘shocked the conscience of mankind’. Charles Taylor has no further grounds for appeal before this court, and he was given no opportunity to speak. He will serve his sentence in a foreign country, possibly the UK. Sweden and Rwanda have also offered to find a cell to house him. Taylor, 65, was found to have supplied weapons to the Revolutionary United Front rebels in exchange for a constant flow of socalled blood diamonds. He was found guilty at his trial of 11 crimes including terrorism, rape, murder and the use of child soldiers by rebel groups in neighbouring Sierra Leone during the vicious civil war of 1991-2002.

Some Contrasts and Similarities between Parents and Grandparents sponsored as Permanent Residents and Super Visa Holders After a build-up of “an unmanageable number of new applications” to sponsor parents and grandparents to the tune of 165,000-strong backlog and wait times in excess of seven years, the Government of Canada, on November 4, 2011, felt the situation necessitated a temporary pause of up to 24 months on the acceptance of new sponsorship applications for parents and grandparents. To minimize the impact of the long wait times, back-log and the resultant temporary pause on the acceptance of new sponsorship applications in the parent and grandparent category, the Government introduced the new “Parent and Grandparent Super Visa”. The super visa, no doubt, is a fast way of uniting with relatives in Canada and living with them over a considerably long period of time instead of waiting for years to get sponsorship applications processed. Under

the super visa application system, one may apply for a single-entry visa for two years or apply for a multiple-entry visa for up to ten years, the fees payable depending on what you want. Like a parent or a grandparent being sponsored as a permanent resident, a super visa applicant is required to be the parent or grandparent of a citizen or a permanent resident of Canada. Additionally, the super visa applicant, like persons being sponsored as per-
Similar to sponsorship applications, the child or grandchild of the super visa applicant who is in Canada is required to meet the minimum income threshold based on one’s family size determined from time to time by the Immigration. Despite the similarities between super visa applications and permanent resident applications through sponsorship, there are dissimilarities in several respects. Unlike parents who come to Canada as sponsored permanent residents, super visa applicants are viewed as visitors, and are required to demonstrate that they will leave Canada by choice at the end of the visa. And, also, while parents and grandparents who are sponsored to Canada as permanent residents are permitted to engage in employment
freely, super visa holders, being visitors, are denied that automatic right. Parents and grandparents being sponsored as permanent residents can avail themselves of free Government medical services. This is however not the case with parents and grandparents who come with super visas. The super visa applicant must provide a proof that he or she has a private medical insurance with a Canadian insurance company. The insurance should be valid for each entry to Canada and available for review by a port of entry officer. Another feature that distinguishes parents who enter Canada as sponsored permanent residents from super visa holders relates to who can accompany the visa holder. The dependants of super visa applicants are not eligible to accompany the applicants. Only the super visa applicant’s spouse or common-law
partner can accompany the applicant. If dependants want to accompany parents or grandparents who hold super visas to Canada, the dependants will have to apply for regular visitor visas. This is not the case with parents and grandparents who are sponsored to Canada as permanent residents. They can have their dependent children accompany them to Canada as permanent residents provided they satisfy the conditions of dependency. Also, the parents and grandparents who enter and live in Canada as sponsored permanent residents may, by virtue of having lived in Canada as permanent residents over a long period of time, be entitled to old age security and other benefits. That might, however, not be the case with super visa holders because, regardless of the aggregate number of years they live in Canada, super visa holders are viewed
as visitors throughout the entire duration of their stay in Canada. My final advice is, before a decision on a form of application is made by a parent or a grandparent or their children, it will be advisable to weigh the benefits and disadvantages of super visa against those of the regular single visitor visas, regular multiple-entry visas and actual permanent resident status acquired through sponsorship applications. Kingston Pen: 7 things to know about Canada’s notorious prison Prison closes this month, 178 years after opening
, Even before Kingston Penitentiary closes its storied doors to some of Canada’s most famous criminals, tourists are clamouring to get a peek inside the soonto-be shuttered facility. The official closing date is Sept. 30 and tours of the 178-year-old building begin Oct. 2. Tickets for the 90-minute tours, hosted by Kingston United Way, were all snapped up, including a second batch made available Wednesday that sold out in less than an hour. Closure of Kingston Pen was announced by then public safety minister Vic Toews last year due to “crumbling infrastructure” and “costly upkeep.” But the 8.6-hectare site has figured in many great Canadian stories throughout the country’s history. Here’s a look at some of the biggest ones over the years. When the first five convicts arrived from Toronto in 1835 to serve their time, the new prison, then named the
Provincial Penitentiary of the Province of Upper Canada, was not yet open for business, and so the inmates had to be held at the county jail for five days. Five months later, there were 62 inmates, including women. By 1850, there were 410 inmates, including 24 women and girls. Women were incarcerated there during the prison’s first century. It didn’t become known as Kingston Penitentiary, o r K P, u n t i l a f t e r Confederation in 1867. The original rules for inmates stated that inmates “must not exchange a word with one another under any pretence whatever” and “must not exchange looks, wink, laugh, nod or gesticulate to each other,” with violators receiving the lash. The original facility was a single, large limestone cellblock with 154 cells in five tiers. Those cells were 74 by 244 cm in width and 200 cm in height. The three other wings
of the main building were completed by the 1850s and the dome that connects the four cellblocks was added in 1861. It was then the largest public building in Upper Canada.

Escapes from KP were few and far between. Two of the most famous escapes involved going over the wall with a ladder.
Antoine Beauche was given a three-year sentence at KP in 1845 when he was eight. “This eight year old child received... 47 corporal punishments [the lash] in nine months, and all for offences of the most childish character,” according to an 1849 commission headed by a future father of Confederation, George Brown. The report also records that inmate Elizabeth Breen was flogged six times when she was only 12 years old. If such stories conjure up memories of a Charles Dickens novel, know that the great English writer visited KP in 1842. Dickens made a mention
In 1923, the man who has been called Canada’s most notorious criminal, bank robber Red Ryan, led four inmates over the wall after first setting fire to a shed as a distraction. Ryan went back to robbing banks, was captured three months later and ended up back in KP. A model prisoner, he was released on parole in 1935, became a poster boy for prison reform, even hosting a radio program. However, in his leisure hours, Ryan had secretly returned to robbery until he was shot dead by a policeman during a botched liquor store holdup in 1936. Bank robber Tyrone William Conn, who had already escaped from
three other prisons, got o v e r K P ’s 1 0 - m e t r e perimeter fence one night in 1999 by using a hand-made ladder and grappling hook he constructed in the prison shop. Thanks to a dummy he made by stuffing clothing with paper, his escape was not discovered until the morning.

Ga-Adangbe Association of Calgary celebrates 6th Annual Homowo Festival
From: Theo Aryee, Calgary This year’s Ga-Adangbe Association of Calgary’s 6th Homowo Festival held on September 21st, 2013 beat every imagination and set very high standards. Participants came from various parts of the country, as far as Toronto, B.C., Ontario and New York. The festival as a whole, provided a sumptuous banquet of Ga-Adangbe sounds. The Kpa Shimo music, Wogbe Dzeke, was danced to by members while entering the hall. M r. F o g a h A m e g a once did renditions of both the Canadian and Ghana national anthems followed by special sounds and drumming by Sankofa African drummers of Winnipeg, bringing the hall down with a rambunctious, audience-participation version of Kpalongo. The occasion was highlighted by a visit and short speech by
the Mayor of Calgary, His Worship, Naheed Nenshi, who spoke about diversity, inclusiveness and being each other’s keeper. He challenged all Ghanaians to make an effort to volunteer to help the needy. Citing the recent flood in Calgary, Mayor Nenshi thanked the GAAC for the flood relief and the financial contribution made to the Canadian Red Cross and other donations made by the Association to other
relief agencies in Calgary. The occasion was heralded by our guest speaker, Mr. Cheema Nkendirim, who spoke about citizenry and challenged GaAdangbe residents in Calgary to think about the community of Calgary and Canadian Nation as a whole. He related that responsible citizenship is about individuals who realize their obligations to take actions that ensure their community is
healthy, safe and secure. A responsible citizen participates in their community to promote personal and public good. He challenged all the Ghanaians in the diaspora to think about socioeconomic needs of Ghana and set a goal of helping to rebuild our Nation. Reflecting on the Association’s

Customs seizes 100 uncustomed vehicles in Takoradi
The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in the Western Region has impounded 100 uncustomed vehicles in the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis. The importers were said to have used fake number plates to smuggle the vehicles through the country’s entry points where there were no GCNet systems. When the Daily Graphic visited the premises of the Customs Division near the Takoradi Harbour, the 100 vehicles which had been impounded were parked at the Customs car park. According to officials, most of the vehicles were over-aged and brought into the country from neighbouring countries such as Togo and Benin for commercial and private use. Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the sector commander, Mr Fredrick Gavor, said the clampdown became necessary because Customs identified a number of vehicles which did not go through the GCNet System. He said there were other vehicles such as heavy duty trucks which were yet to be impounded. cont'd on pg. 43

Canadian doctor total at record high Number of female doctors rose nearly 24%, male d o c t o r s i n c re a s e d 10%, CIHI says
“The year 2012 saw the highest level of physicians per capita ever recorded in Canada,” the authors of the reports said.
Canada had a record 75,142 doctors last year and they earned $328,000 gross on average, according to two new reports.
What’s more, the sixyear trend of growth in the number of doctors outpacing population growth is expected to continue since data from medical schools indicate more students are graduating with MD degrees.
The annual reports on physician supply and payments for both general practitioners and specialists were released Thursday by the Canadian Institute for Health Information.
Between 2008 and 2012, the number of female physicians increased by nearly 24 per cent,
while the number of male doctors increased by 10 per cent. In all provinces, women represented a larger proportion of family doctors than specialists. Since 2008, the number of doctors working in rural areas increased five times faster than the rural population, with almost 6.400 physicians in 2012. But the numbers alone don’t present the full picture. It’s important to ask not just how many doctors are needed, but where are they most needed and in what specialties, said Geoff

She’s had headaches since childhood and has been going to walk-in clinics but is frustrated with the experience. She’s tried the provincial service to find a doctor but keeps getting notices saying there are no leads. “It is extremely frustrating,” said Speth.

The survey asked respondents to list 30 factors which, in their opinion, have had the greatest impact on their achievement. The Webster dictionary defined principles as an accepted or professed rule of action or conduct; or a fundamental law of truth from which others are derived. Principles are the undeniable facts or attributes of nature which in many ways are intertwines in our choices and decisions. Ghanaian diplomat and 2001 Nobel Peace Prize recipient once stated, to live is to choose. But to choose well, you must know who you are and what you stand for (principles), where you want to go, why and how you want to get there. Success on the other hand, is defined as the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors or the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like. Dr. Mensah Otabil in his best-selling Pathway of success stated success is a choice, just as failure is a choice. He further surmised that success is conditional, based on a product of the mind, our words, and sum total of our actions So what do I mean by principles of financial success? In the nutshell, this article will highlight some of the myths and pre-requisites for financial breakthrough or freedom, regardless of the external challenges that serves as constraints to financial freedom. A. Why do some people attract wealth like a magnet, while others, despite what they would do, are doomed to medium income or have to live from paycheck to paycheck? The observations of the richest people in the world have been that financial success is affected as much as 80% by human beliefs and attitudes, while only 20% by the knowledge and skills about ways to earn money. In this case, it would be a fallacy to believe that knowledge does not help any, but people do not just make money based

You may think to yourself, “If I had initial capital, influential friends, good ideas, etc., then I would start a business, invest, produce or patent something, etc. and then I’d be happy (rich, successful, loved, etc.). But I do not have all of that, so that is why I am not what I would like to be” What is wrong here? Well, the fact is that your formula is flipped upside down. In reality, the contrary is true: You have to be selfconfident, responsible, ambitious, and tenacious, etc. at first, then do (create, grow, take risks, network, experiment with some ideas, etc.) and eventually you’ll have high performance, s u c c e s s , p r o s p e r i t y, recognition, etc. In the good book as found in Provides 12:24, it states “the hand of the diligent will rule, but the lazy man/woman will be put to forced labor. Also
in Provides 10:4, we are told, He who has a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. If you want more of the wise sayings, check Proverbs 6:6-11. That is not say for those who live from pay check to pay check are lazy, but in the context of the above can do more than live on our sole source of income. People often complain about their lack of salary. Do employers really pay too little? Are you familiar with the feeling or the thought that you would have more money if only they would raise your wages? However, an increase in salary is not essential and does not matter. Why? Because most people obey the Parkinson’s Law. This law says, “Costs rise until they reach the level of income.” The first condition for financial success is to develop the habit of constantly breaking this Parkinson’s Law. How many years have you worked as an employee? How many times during this period have they increased your salary? How closely have you approached financial freedom during that time? Or maybe you have moved away? Maybe while incomes were rising your debts were growing too? Maybe you are now squeezed as you have never been squeezed before? Maybe you are afraid “rock the boat” or to take bold steps, because you cannot afford to slash your income even briefly, because banks and leasing companies are knocking on your door? If this describes your situation, then your employers, who pay insufficiently, are not guilty. It’s only your own habits that have placed you directly into the “hamster wheel”. You must run this wheel continuously, because if the wheel stops rotating for just one second, your entire life will fall apart like a house of cards. Which is of greater worth: to have a well-paid job, or create your own business? Continue to work for others or create your own business? It depends on your individual needs. People who are in financial difficulties and have unused room on their credit cards and lines of credit often wonder if they can use the unused credit limit before filing for bankruptcy. The simple answer to this question is No. What I know is that, creditors may oppose your bankruptcy on the ground of bad faith or even fraud. It is bad faith to borrow from your credit cards while you already have every intention to declare bankruptcy or you have already planned to declare bankruptcy. TALKING FINANCES An Eagle In The Chicken Coop Part 2 By: Gabriel Quayson, Toronto This is the second part of an article that was published last month. If you don’t have a copy of last month’s article and the parable, here is a short version of the parable: An eagle egg was found by a farmer in the wilderness. The farmer brought it home, and the farmer’s hen in the chicken coop laid on the egg in addition to its own until it hatched. The eagle chick (eaglet) behaved just like a chicken due to its chicken coop environment and upbringing. The eagle was not able to fly as an adult eagle even with 6 feet wing span. Finally, the eagle was taken to a mountain peak, where it witnessed other eagles flying and it was pushed off the cliff of the mountain top. At that point it had to
fly or fall to its death. It flew like the other eagles in the wilderness. The relevancy of the parable to our own financial life was discussed and this piece is the continuation of that discussion. Take a brief moment and think about the life of an eagle versus that of a chicken. The life of a chicken is safe and dull. It receives three square meals per day, but its mobility is restricted to a 10 feet by 20 feet enclosure from hatching till death. The eagle on the other hand lives an adventurous and exciting life. The globe is available for it to explore. It is highly skilled and must maintain its skills to survive. It has no idea where its next meal will come from. It eats from many sources: birds of

Most entrepreneurs abandoned their businesses’ Most entrepreneurs assisted by the Business Advisory Centre (BAC) have abandoned their main business and opted for others, Madam Ophelia Amponsah Tabi, Head of BAC at Nkoranza, has said. She said they abandoned their businesses because they did not set their priorities right. Madam Tabi was addressing a stakeholders’ forum jointly organised by the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI) and BAC for some entrepreneurs and workers from Nkoranza South Municipal and Nkoranza North District at Nkoranza. It was on the state of the businesses of the participants and the challenges facing them to enable NBSSI and BAC initiate strategies to cushion them to undertake their business activities. A New Sense of Moral Awareness about Child Labour in Ghana By Kwabena Akuoko, MSW, RSW,, Toronto
“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” – Nelson Mandela A nation’s children constitute the most treasured human capital it has towards its future economic and social development. Therefore, as opposed to subjecting the young ones to any form of exploitation, society has a moral obligation to support and build them up towards a better future. It is against this background that child labour has in recent years garnered a new sense of moral awareness, and deservedly received a lot of attention in Ghana. Child labour is reported to be on the rise in many communities across the country. Like other parts of the world, large numbers of Ghanaian children work regularly in agriculture, fishing, illegal mining, and domestic service for economic survivability. The International Labour Organization (ILO) for instance estimates that globally, as many as 215 million children between the ages of 5 and 17 years currently work on sustained basis. They essentially work on regular basis as adults to supplement their families’ meagre incomes. And according to the ILO, these children work under illegal, hazardous and extremely exploitative conditions. Child labour is thus one of the challenging moral issues of our time. G e n e r a l l y, a n y f o r m o f continuous work that takes away children’s childhood and hinders their development is simply child labour. Work, which keeps them away from receiving education for their future is thus considered child labour. And from the standpoint of the United Nations as well as local and international child welfare advocacy groups, any work that harms children must be construed as child labour. Broadly speaking, any work that is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children, and interferes with their development by depriving them of the opportunity to attend school, obliging them to leave school prematurely or requiring them to attempt to combine school attendance with excessively long and heavy work constitutes child labour. While child labour is not unique to any particular society, the problem is rampant in the so-called developing countries and unfortunately, Ghana cannot escape the blame when it comes to regular employment of children of all ages. Under-age children usually work at all sorts of jobs in many Ghanaian communities, rural and urban because of their families’ extreme poverty situations. The question that needs to be asked is how long can we hide behind poverty while we deprive children who are among society’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged segments of the population their childhood? The sad reality is that it is not uncommon for children as young as between five and 10 year olds to regularly work in the same manners as adults in many Ghanaian communities. These children are routinely and immorally exploited,
therefore it is about time the problem is fundamentally addressed. For all Ghanaian children have the right to be given the opportunity to prepare for a better future. The new sense of moral awareness associated with the increasing level of child labour in Ghana needs to be spread across the length and breadth of the country in order to squarely deal with the problem. Various reports indicate that some parents in certain circumstances literally sell off their children for perpetual exploitation in the name of apprenticeship. Local and international non-government organizations (NGO’s) concerned with child welfare issues in Ghana caution that while child labour is nationwide, it is particularly widespread along the Volta Lake regions, i.e. Volta and Brong Ahafo Regions. Parents routinely and plainly sell off their children to fisherman for money. And under the pretext of teaching these children the fishing occupation, the young ones are unmistakably exploited for their labour. Also, aside from fishing, agriculture remains the oldest and common occupation in which children are exploited nationwide in Ghana. Children engaged in fishing, farming and other traditional occupations are deprived of their basic rights to education. Instead of formal schooling, children mend fishing nets, dry fish and toil the land from dawn to dusk in what advocacy groups have described as slave-like conditions. Inasmuch as it is traditionally acceptable for children to learn local occupations, it is of course morally unacceptable to have them work as if they were adults. What is happening along the banks of Lake Volta and indeed many parts of Ghana in which children are forced to work for reasons that are beyond their control epitomises the crux of child labour. It is therefore incumbent upon the government and other stakeholders to educate the population in order to find a lasting solution to the problem. Provision of formal education to poor and vulnerable children across the country will certainly help alleviate the problem because education is an important platform for children’s development. Children who are drawn to child labour are basically driven because of poverty and lack of schooling. And since schooling is a platform for early intervention against children’s exploitation, enforced school enrollment policy for all Ghanaian children regardless of geographic locations and socio-economic backgrounds will significantly help address the problem. Clearly, unless fundamental economic changes are brought about in our country amid continuous new sense of moral awareness of the problem, many Ghanaian children will unfortunately not be able to escape the cruelty of child labour. The problem can only be controlled by an increasing awareness of its immoral implications coupled with effective enforcement of anti-child labour laws.

Agric Minister weeps over bad farm roads Minister of Agriculture, Clement Kofi Humado has bemoaned the appalling roads linking farms and markets in the country. The Minister said that due to the poor road network, produce usually rot on the farms, thereby affecting the operations of the poor farmers who work tirelessly to produce the food crops. He therefore called for effective policies to boost food security in the country at all times. Hon. Humado made these remarks when he toured the vast plantain plantation of Amanfrom Farms Limited at Makyinimabre, near Nkoranza in the Brong Ahafo region in the company of the Minister of Interior, Kwesi Ahwoi and other top officials. The tour was to offer the Agric Minister the opportunity to assess the farm, the biggest plantain plantation in the country. Currently, the Amanfrom Farms Limited, which was established two years ago and
has 50-acres land, plans to expand the farm’s capacity to 100 acres soon. Hon. Humado said expressed satisfaction with the rate at which Amanfrom Farms Limited was expanding, urging the Managing Director of the farm, Kwadwo Nsafoa Poku and his team to sustain their good works. He said roads linking the Amanfrom Farms to other parts of the country were in bad state, a development which could pose a danger to the progress of the farm. The farm was initially producing maize but it later ventured into plantain production. It transports the produce to Fresh Pac Limited at Tema which turns them into chips for export. Hon. Humado praised the company for venturing into plantain plantation and commended his predecessor, Hon. Kwesi Ahwoi for advising Amanfrom Farms to adopt those measures. Minister for Interior, Kwesi Ahwoi, on his part, showered praises on Amanfrom Farms for
its hard work and dedication, which had helped to boost plantain production in the country. He expressed the hope that the success story of Amanfrom Farms, which is owned by an individual, would be replicated by other well-endowed people to help sustain food production in the country. Hon. Ahwoi also called for an improvement in the roads, urging scientists to boost farming activities. Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Yaw Adusei, tasked the private sector to emulate the shining example of Kwadwo Nsafoa Poku, MD of Amanfrom Farms by venturing into farming to ensure food security. Dr. Ben Bamfo, Manager of the farm, said the farm had provided employment to the youth of the area, adding that through t h e h e l p o f E D A I F, Amanfrom Farms has educated farmers in the area on the proper and modern ways of farming. New road toll takes effect The Ghana Road Fund Board, under the auspices of the Ministry of Road and Highways, has called on the general public to cooperate with it as the Board establishes new toll collection stations in the country. The new toll collection
stations will be located on the Accra-Sunyani road, particularly at the Nsutam Custom barrier and on the Tema-Aflao road. The tolls collected, as indicated by the Board, will be used for the maintenance of roads in the country.
The Road Fund Board, therefore, implored all Ghanaians, in a statement read on Radio Gold, to assist in making the exercise successful. The new toll collection stations will take effect from 29th September, 2013. PeaceFM

’Deputy Trade and Industry Minister, Nii Lamptey Vanderpuye, has challenged African airlines to help speed up African integration since they play a critical role in that process.
The Deputy Minister lauded Mauritius for the significant improvement in the textile industry and said he was looking forward for greater collaboration between the two countries.
He noted that travelling from one African country to the other for business ventures can be cumbersome as passengers sometimes have to connect flights in Europe before reaching an African country. This, he said, was hampering African integration.
“If we trade among ourselves as a continent, we stand the chance to be the beacon of an economic giant in the world’, the Deputy Minister told the Mauritius delegation.
He said airlines on the continent should also take up the challenge to make doing business in Africa much faster and less expensive. Hon. Vanderpuye made these comments when the visiting Mauritius Trade delegation paid a farewell visit to him last Friday at his office.
He said African countries require free movement of goods and services, adding that the time has come to remove all barriers that hamper African integration.

Revered Minister Sowah Ablorh, resident Pastor of the Ghanaian Presbyterian Church, Montreal celebrated the 10th anniversary of his Ministry in Montreal on September 8, 2013. Rev. Ablorh was born to Presbyterian parents in Tarkwa, located in the Western Region of Ghana. His father was the pioneer in the formation of the Presbyterian Church in Tarkwa-Nsuaem District and its environs. As a result, he was brought
up under strict Presbyterian discipline. Reverend Ablorh attended the Trinity Theological Seminary in Legon, Accra Ghana where he undertook Theology & Administration and graduated with First Class Honors.
He was the President for the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International (Takoradi Chapter), Director of Evangelism at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana-Western Presbytery, Director of Ecumenical and Social Relations, and the President of Ministers Conference of Presbyterian at the Presbyterian

Who are the NDC Presidents’ Speechwriters??? By: Michael Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB
The United Nations Organization has nearly two hundred members. It is the major world forum where every country is given recognition and the opportunity to speak their minds on important world issues at least once in a year. This once-ina-year world recognition opportunity is afforded to all nations, rich or poor, powerful or weak, wise and not so wise, smart and not so smart ones. There are some countries, members of the United Nations, about whom nobody has ever heard of. Yet they get the opportunity to address the world body at least once a year. This opportunity comes every year in September when the main body of the United Nations, the General Assembly convenes in New York City. A number of smart Heads of States and Governments take this rare worldwide recognition opportunity to carve a name for themselves and their countries. A country’s honour and credibility is judged by its leaders. We have very stupid people masquerading as “leaders” of very rich and important countries. And we have very smart and very sensible leaders leading relatively unknown and unrecognizable countries. Such leaders manage to portray very powerful and positive images of their various countries on the world stage when they get the opportunity. As mentioned earlier, if there is any visible fo-
rum where any leader of any country gets to portray himself/herself and their countries on the world stage, that forum is the United Nations General Assembly in September of every year. Many leaders have done rightly that. Others also just make a mockery of themselves and in so doing tarnish the image of their respective countries. During the first few years of the rule of Ghana’s post-colonial government, its leader Kwame Nkrumah used the United Nations General Assembly forum to portray positive things and images about Ghana and Africa. Other world leaders loved to watch and hear Kwame Nkrumah speak. This was a smart man who had vision and real ideas. He may have had help in putting his public speeches together for public delivery but he was smart enough to know the positive things to say in public…at world forums to project his seriousness and the seriousness of the country and continent he was representing. Since the year 2000 and beyond, there have been a number of “leaders”
of a number of countries (some from Africa) who have brought shame and ridicule to themselves, their respective countries, their continents and people. For most part of the 1980s and the 1990s former Libyan leader Muamar Ghadafi was labeled an international outcast, not welcome into any respectable world forums for a number of reasons, rightly or wrongly. He got the first opportunity to attend and address the United Nations General Assembly for the first time in 2011. He made a joke and mockery of himself. The man rattled on and on and on, so many minutes past his official allotted time, quoting unnecessarily from his “Green Book”. In the end he was almost ordered out of the podium at the United Nations General Assembly. Ghadafi’s United Nations’ address earned him and his country, Libya, no positive images. Next was the former and late leader of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez who decided to use his United Nations General Assembly address in 2008 to insult his arch-enemy, former United States President George H. Bush (baby Bush). Chavez’s address, like Ghandafi’s, was shameful and counterproductive to say the least. And there was this other mad one from Iran, Ahmedinejad who used his eight addresses to the United Nations during his rule as President of Iran to insult and threaten the United States and Israel.

He was a laughing stock and in most times of his addresses, many delegates of the General Assembly would walk out of the Assembly when he started to speak. And our own brother-in-law, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe has also used the same forum to spill out diatribes and insults on Britain and the West for daring to impose sanctions on his government for excessive human rights abuses. Much as I always felt ashamed and embarrassed by the performances of these leaders and their speeches at the United Nations General Assembly, I can pardon some of them like Ghadafi, Ahmedinejad and Chavez. These guys understood nothing in this world apart from revolutionary rhetorics. Mugabe is a sad basket case. This is a well-educated and intelligent man who has been blinded and intoxicated by power and sees no golden opportunity to portray a good image for his country and continent apart from his own self-serving agenda. Enter Ghana once again. In January 2009, Prof. John Evans Attah Mills assumed the reign of power and government in Ghana. This was a very well-educated intelligent man, a Professor of Law and Taxation. In his speech to the United nations General Assembly in 2011, we all expected the Ghanaian President to rise up to the occasion and let Ghana shine like
the days of Kwame Nkrumah. Ghana has a lot of positive credentials to portray to the outside world. So a speech from the law professor president could possibly not go wrong. What did we hear? President Mills used the occasion to talk about trivial local issues from how his government was actively trying to build school building so that children no longer will go to school under mango trees, to the positive things (so he thought) about the Ghana School Feeding Program and a lot of very minute things like feeder roads not suitable for the august gathering of the United Nations General Assembly. Many political observers questioned who actually advised President Mills or wrote his speeches. Enter John Dramani Mahama as President in 2013. He also gets the opportunity to make im-
portant speeches, comments and the final rare appearance at the United nations General Assembly. He did so on Friday September 27, 2013. What did we hear? President Mahama chose to talk about domestic issues instead of touching on global issues and the place of Ghana in them and Ghana’s contribution and credentials. Among the domestic issues he touched on in his 15-minute address were issues on youth employment and how the government is trying to train the youth etc. This speech was mediocre at best. The question observers are asking again is: who writes these speeches for the NDC Presidents we have had in Ghana over these past years? Well, considering some of the appointments President Mahama has made in his high office, the answer to the question will not be far-fetched.

Transit vehicles Asked how those vehicles managed to get into the country without being detected by Customs at the entry points, Mr Gavor said most of them entered the country as transit vehicles. He explained that first, the vehicles were driven from Benin and Togo to a place along the Togo and Ghana border known as “No Man’s Land,” where they were given fake number plates. “Other importers hide under the ECOWAS protocol, which allows vehicles to enter member countries and stay for 90 days, using fake ECOWAS brown cards and number plates,” he said. He added that those vehicles were then driven to a location where fake officers (goro-boys) at the offices of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) provided fake documents to cover them. Mr Gavor also said the owners and fake agents at the DVLA usually used the number plates of vehicles such as tractors, forklifts, trucks and other earth-moving machines which were no longer on the road, to evade the payment of duties to the state. He said most of the vehicles were used for taxis and later sold to unsuspecting members of the general public. The commander cautioned the public to cross-check documents on the vehicles they wanted to buy with the Customs Division before any payment should be effected. When contacted, the Western Regional Director of DVLA, Mr Godson Wormegah, said all the impounded vehicles bore fake number plates. “I can confirm that it is only the DVLA that issues licences to vehicles. However, some had brought in these machines and were cutting the fake plates for sale to people,” he said. Is your Child Receiving Special Education? Understanding IEP – Individual Education Plan By Golda Abena Quayson
Are you a parent of a child in school receiving special education services? Are you concerned that your child with autism is not receiving the appropriate transition services to be prepared for life after school? Would you like to have more information about graduation and special education? This article will give you few pointers to consider helping “exceptional pupil” child to enjoy schooling as well as to get the proper resources to support your child during their school ages. Parents of children with special needs need to acquire more knowledge about the school system and other service providers that supports children with special needs. A child with a disability has the right to be educated from the age of 3 until their 22nd birthday. Check your child’s IEP if they are in High School and make sure that the graduation date listed is up until your child’s 22nd birthday not sooner. It is your responsibility to verify. Do not be afraid to ask questions if you are not sure of something regarding the process. The reason of developing IEP is to identify clearly for parents, school staff, and the Ministry of Education the reason for developing an IEP for the particular student who requires the help in learning. The definition of special education is: individually based education that prepares a student for post school learning, employment, independent living and financial self sufficiency. IEP – Individual Education Plan is mostly considered for children with mild disabilities. A student mostly gets help either in their regular classroom setting or outside the classroom considering the subject offered by the provider. The course or subjects are modified to suit the academic learning needs of these special needs students. It also elaborates and helps them in the areas of skill deficits, transition services, job skills and training, and other related services that will prepare them to graduate. The IPRC – Identification, Placement and Review Committee from the Ministry of Education /School Board will determine your child’s eligibility. A clear understanding of the student’s strengths and needs is fundamental to the development of an effective special education program and the provision of appropriate accommodations and services to facilitate the student’s learning. A description of the strengths and needs of the student must be recorded in the IEP files and data base. In the case of students who have been identified as exceptional by an IPRC, a description of strengths and needs would have been provided in the committee’s statement of decision. The description
in the IEP must be based on, and consistent with the description contained in the IPRC’s statement, but may elaborate on it to reflect the results of any further assessments conducted or observations made of the student. In the case of students who have not been identified as exceptional, descriptions of strengths and needs must be developed on the basis of appropriate educational, psychological, and/or health assessments, and on the basis of observations of the student. The descriptions of the student’s strengths and needs must be clear and specific. Special education personnel cannot graduate your child just because they have enough credits. The law requires that special education personnel keep other things in mind when determining a graduation date. Some schools will try to give you all the reasons your child should graduate when the student has not reached his full potential of maturity. As a parent of a special needs child, you know your child more than any one else, so you have to help your child to make the best out of the education system. Parents have to successfully advocate against graduation, if they think the child still needs services or consider a transfer to another school which is willing to provide a longer support until your child is ready to make that transition from school. Do not ever feel shy or frightened to ask for the services and support for your child. It is his/her right!! There is nothing wrong if the child requires support. It will alleviate some load off you. There is the other side of the coin which appears that your child struggles a little bit at the beginning of school years and has been quickly forced into the program as a number of our children have been forced into certain special programs even when they do not need them. This is where you need to stand firm and maintain that your child does not need the support by attending all the meetings set for your child. This is the reason that it is critical to have your child stay in school as long as they can. Use this information to help your child receive the transition services they need so that they will be prepared for post school learning, and independent living. Most post-secondary schools in Ontario and Canada as a whole have provisions for students with disability to provide them with the resources they need to succeed in their learning journey to become effective citizens. Help them take advantage of these support systems and services.
Community Concerns Setting up Children to develop lying habits Doris Osei Bonsu, Crisis Counselor, Toronto One of the problems that many parents face is lying by their children. Parents will often personalize this problem and view it as a sign that their children lack respect for them. They may also believe that their authority is being undermined when their children distort the truth. It is very important for parents to recognize that people behave they way they do for a reason, even with the habit of lying. Rather than focus on the specific lies told by our children and the implications of those lies, we should, as parents, try to understand the purposes underlying the children’s need to lie. Sometimes parents make unconscious mistakes that encourage children to tell lies. When parents confront their children about their pattern of lying, they may inadvertently make the problem worse. Parents may unintentionally promote a power-struggle and cause their children to actually become more deceptive about their behaviour. In other words, asking angrily whether your children did something wrong when you know they did puts pressure on them to lie. If you know your child did something wrong, it is better to confront your child with your k n o w l e d g e d i r e c t l y. Trapping your child in a lie when you already know the truth let your child be seen as a liar which is not good for a child’s self-image. Instead of using the word “liar”, it is better to use the phrases such as “you need to be more up-front with me” or “you need to be honest with me”. This
relaxes the encounter and makes it more likely that you will get to the bottom of the situation. Interrogating your children angrily about a possible misdeed and then harshly punishing them after admitting it causes them to further lie to you. When faced with a situation children want to lie to avoid harsh punishment. Instead make it clear you will punish misdeeds more severely if they lie about them. For example, if your child admits to insulting someone, you might require your child apologizing but if the child lies you should require apology and impose a loss of privileges like not watching his/her favourite television program three consecutive times or taking a favourite toy from him/her. Lying about a misdeed should result in double punishment, one for the misdeed and the other for the act of lying. Children will lie if they feel excessive pressure from a parent. Be sure to question calmly. You may be suspicious and ask probing questions, but avoid extreme anger. If your child admits having done some wrong, show appreciation for the child’s honesty and courage in doing so. You may show some affection to a child for telling the truth, but punish the child accordingly.

During this time, parents should keep the lines of communication open. Unfortunately, some children are pathological or chronic liars. Through stealing, promiscuous sex, and other self -destructives behaviours, they show signs of mental disorders. These children need professional, psychiatric and counselling treatment. Dietary supplements: Do you need them?
Understand your specific health needs and how a dietary supplement might benefit your health Do you need to take dietary supplements? The answer depends on your eating and lifestyle habits and some factors beyond your control, such as your age. If you are eating three healthy meals a day, then you probably do not need to take vitamins. But dietary supplements may be appropriate in some circumstances under certain circumstances. Here are some instances in which you may benefit from taking extra supplements. You may need supplements if: * You don’t eat well. If you eat less than five total servings of fruits and vegetables daily, it may be difficult to get all of the vitamins and minerals your body needs. Also, if you eat only one or two times a day, you may be limiting the number and variety of servings you eat from the various food groups. * You’re a vegetarian. If you’re a vegetarian, you may not consume enough calcium, iron, zinc and vitamins B-12 and D. You can get these nutrients
naturally from nonmeat sources, such as fortified soy products, green leafy vegetables, legumes, whole-grain products and nuts. If you aren’t able to regularly consume these foods, dietary supplements may be necessary. * You consume less than 1,200 calories a day. Low-calorie diets limit the types and amounts of foods you eat and, in turn, the types and amounts of nutrients you receive. Unless monitored by a doctor, a low-calorie diet isn’t usually recommended. * You have a medical condition that affects how your body absorbs, uses or excretes nutrients. Ontario’s Wynne supports national debate on assisted suicide Canadians need to have a debate on whether or not to legalize assisted suicide, whether the federal government wants to deal with the issue or not, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne said Thursday. Th e video f r om the late Dr. Donald Low pleading with Canada to do a better job in dealing with end-of-life issues has sparked debate on a topic on the minds of many, added Wynne. “I think Dr. Low raised, in a very powerful and personal way, an issue that is on the minds of man y p e o p l e a c r o s s the country,” she said. “I think this is a national discussion that every one of us as citizens of this country is going to have to think about. It’s about human beings deciding what kinds of choices they believe that they should have.” Wynne said she had heard the audio but had not viewed the video by Low, the calm public voice during Toronto’s SARS crisis in 2003, which was taped just eight days before he died from a brain tumour last week at age 68.

Total Government Spending Falls For First Time In More Than A Decade Ontario’s 2012-13 deficit is $9.2 billion, $5.6 billion lower than projected in the 2012 Budget, including a further reduction of $0.6 billion since the 2013 Budget. For the first time in more than a decade, total government reported spending, due in part to one-time savings, fell from the previous year. At $122.6 billion, spending was $3.8 billion less than planned and 0.1 per cent lower than in 2011-12.

First Nation, Donation of $1500.00 to Canadian Red Cross for flood relief, Donation of 10 boxes of new clothes and shoes to flood victims. She then asserted GAAC’s philosophical tenet that some sense of culture and identity is better than
none and that a nation that loses its language and culture dies. Ms. Quarshie challenged us to do all in our power to maintain the Ga-Adangbe languages and culture to enable us to pass them on to our children wherever we may be. She stated
that GAAC works toward fostering communication and solidarity among visible minority youth and families in Calgary and catchment areas and towards achieving social, racial, cultural, political and economic harmony across the Province of
Alberta, Canada and across the globe; ensuring our participation in the shaping of a community that members benefit from fully. The Chairperson announced that GAAC priorities in the coming years are the revitalization of our Ga-Adangbe language school and the strengthening of links with other organizations across the globe. The Secretary of GAAC, Theo Aryee declared that the Festival was a fantastic opportunity to showcase and highlight the diversity of the people of Calgary and adjoining areas. Ms. Quarshie extended gratitude to all the members of the Association and paid special tribute to the organizing committee members and volunteers. The event also provided the opportunity for visitors to sample Ga-Adangbe and Ghanaian dishes, including Kpokpoi, kose, wakye, banku, kenkey, joloff, etc.

Let's Think Family - By Rev. Dr. Samuel Kisseadoo Solutions, sympathy, comfort and objectivity in men and women In my opinion, this is the foundation for all of our relationships, since God created us as male and female right from the beginning of life, in order for us to recognize our rich differences which the Almighty deliberately wired into us for the establishment of the best male-female relationships on earth. 1) Men Are Solutions Oriented. Women Are Sympathy And Comfort Oriented Any man, who does not know how to comfort his wife, female fiancée, daughter, female friend, or female counterpart, and express genuine sympathy and empathy for her weaknesses, needs, and problems, can never be a good and satisfying husband, lover, or friend for that woman or girl. A man without a heart of sympathy, compassion, and comfort for females, and who would not practically demonstrate these necessities, cannot be a true companion and a man of full blessing for his own daughters, sisters, female inlaws, and female friends. Even in counseling administered by male counselors, there are many ladies and girls who have left the presence of pastors, ministers, church leaders, and counselors feeling dry, condemned, misunderstood, misinterpreted, uncomforted, unloved, and more sad or confused than they came, because of the apparent un-loving, unsympathetic, and unkind way that they were handled. Most often we simply dish out words to people in counseling, slap the truth in their faces, accompanied by the wrong body language, without any wisdom, insight, humility, and love that seek to find out how the person we are speaking to is really receiving what we are saying. We must make diligent efforts to speak more with people (heartto-heart interaction), and not just speak to or speak at people, especially when they are hurting, seeking, needy, worried, anxious, or confused. Wow! That is quiet a
huge grenade that I have exploded on this paper, isn’t it? But, ponder over what I have said very carefully, look back into the history of distressed couples, rocky marriages, divorces, separations, family feuds, and broken relationships between ladies and gentlemen, and you will agree with me that what I am saying is true. We do not usually stop to think about the comforting or distressful effects of our words and accompanying attitudes on people’s hearts and minds, when interacting with them, especially when we are displeased. We simply launch into torrential effusions that callously shoot careless words at the other fellow. Naturally, men are quick to try giving solutions to problems they see in people with mental rationalization, and quick to devise solutions to their own problems as well. Women rather begin to solve problems by giving sympathy and comfort to the victim from their emotions, and seeking to receive sympathy and comfort for themselves as the initial solution to any problems that they encounter. Providing solutions rather than sympathy, is a general need for all men, while one of the greatest needs of women is the provision of sympathy for them when we are trying to help them to come out of any situation. So, when a woman is simply expressing her emotions about an issue without reasoning along with the man for solutions, then the man feels frustrated, and shuts down the woman or rebukes her in a way that makes her feel senseless. The man should patiently understand her nature, and gradually bring her mind to reason along with him
for a peaceful, productive, and lasting solution. If a husband simply attempts to talk, instruct, and suggest answers to his wife regarding a problem or unfortunate condition that the wife has found herself in, without any expression or administering of sympathy and comfort, then the woman would not feel or think that the man sincerely loves her in the marriage. That is why it is easier for a husband to get to the mind of his wife by cuddling her in his arms with comforting words for any situation, and simultaneously telling her his thoughts, ideas, and suggestions for a solution to a problem, as well as steps to be taken for improvement in character and for a better marriage relationship, rather than talking and instructing her like the chief commander in the relationship. The wife should also know that her husband cannot just feed her on sympathy and comfort all day long, without any constructive, mental exercise to formulate concrete plans to move ahead wisely to solve their problems and make all the necessary changes in their lives for a more productive relationship. Any man and woman, who are courting with intentions to marry, must understand these principles that are based on fundamental gender differences. That must definitely help them to stop quarreling over the methods that each one in the relationship is trying to suggest or push forward as solutions to the problems or hardships they continuously encounter in the relationship.

A man who devices solutions without considering the future implications in the relationship (intended and unintended consequences), is a short-sighted poor leader for any woman or family. In such cases, the woman should prayerfully, humbly, and patiently love and gradually direct the man’s mind and heart to her welfare as well as his welfare and the welfare of the
children plus other family members and friends. If on the other hand the woman is the sentimental one who is emotionally insisting on her solutions without considering the man’s welfare and the future of the rest of the family or friends, then the man must patiently guide the woman as well. No man can succeed alone. In fact, we were not created to be able to ultimately become successful independently. We seriously need each other, especially as males and females. Men and women must understand this basic difference, and make every effort to move towards each other away from their insistent, rigid, legalistic, selfish, self-centered, narrowminded, and often proud positions in all situations. That will enable the man and woman to find a common ground as they exercise self-control to listen to each other, merge their ideas, be considerate with
each other’s rights and feelings, and finally agree on what would unite them to live and move along harmoniously and happily in their relationship. And again: “I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son”? 6 But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all the angels of God worship Him.” 7 And of the angels He says: “Who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire.” But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions.” 10 And: “You, LORD, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. 11 They will perish, but You remain; and they will all grow old like a garment; 12 Like a cloak You will fold them up, and they
will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will not fail.” 13 But to which of the angels has He ever said: “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool”? (Hebrews 1:1-13 NKJV) The purpose of this article is to emphasize the true nature of the Lord Jesus as the Divine Son of God as stated in the word of God. The writer of the letter to the Hebrew Christians, sought to encourage the Jewish Christians who were going through severe persecution for their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ not to give up because Christ was superior to the Judaic religious system. The writer compared the various aspects of the Old Testament worship with the true identity of Christ and the offices he assumed during his earthly ministry. He explained how animal sacrifice under Judaism could only cover up the sin of the guilty but could not take away the sin and must be repeated. However, Christ offered Himself once and that was enough to pacify the Father for the sins of every human being who would trust in His sacrifice at Calvary-“And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding
of blood there is no remission... And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation ((Hebrews 9:22, 27, 28). “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.” (Hebrews 10:4 NKJV) Beginning from the first chapter of Hebrews, we read: “God who at various times and in various ways spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.” (Hebrews 1:14 NKJV) In the above scriptures we learn that Christ, the Son of God, the heir of all things, is more important than the prophets, for through Him God created the worlds. This Son of God is the true representation of the invisible God (Read John 1:18). He sustains all creation by the word of His power. In Hebrews 1:4-5, the Lord Jesus is declared much better than the angels and occupies unique position as “the Son of God”. To avoid any doubt from the minds
of the angels because human beings are “a little lower” than the angels since He was sending His Son into the world in the form of human to be the perfect sacrificial Lamb (Hebrews, 2:9), God the Father commanded all angels to worship Him (Hebrews 1:6). Addressing His Son in Hebrews 1:8-9, the Father called Him “God”, “But to the Son he says: Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with oil of gladness more than your companions.” The writer of Hebrews quoted Psalm 45:6-7. As the divine Son of God, Jesus was aware that He was God, therefore, in His prayer in John 17, He said, “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself,
with the glory which I had with You before the world was.” (John 17:45) God revealed Himself to Moses in Exodus as the “I AM” (Exodus 3:14). In John 8:56 59 the Lord Jesus told the Jew who were arguing with Him about His identity, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad. “Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” Then they took up stones to throw at Him; ...” God had declared in the first commandment that He would not share His glory with anyone, therefore, even angels would not accept worship—Rev. 19:10 and Rev. 22:9 but on many occasions the Lord Jesus accepted worship(Matthew 8:2; 15:25; 28:17; Luke 24:50-52 and Acts 10:25). Ghana students walk the walk Breaking through child labour in Africa At first glance, it looks as though these students share the same struggles as any other student: homework assignments, curfew and chores. But in actual fact they have worked hard with their community for the chance to obtain an education in a village that is plagued with child labour in the oil palm industry. One –third of the children in the Nyameyiekrom, in the western region of Ghana, cannot attend school because they are needed to chop oil palm fruits with heavy bladed poles by climbing high up the trees. Free the children In 2008, the community of Nyameyiekrom built
a small school out of bamboo for four teachers and 288 students. Free the Children has since built an additional school room, and are
