The list of winners will be published in the next issue of the FLAIR newsletter. From this group, one student will be selected as the overall outstanding student of the CSRA— the “FLAIR Student of the Year.” To participate, the teacher should send the nomination form for the student to flair@augusta.edu. The forms are on the FLAIR web page: www.augusta.edu/flair.
Middle School Certificates of Merit For the eleventh year, middle school students can be recognized by FLAIR for their outstanding work in foreign language. The introductory course is offered over two years at the middle school, so those students maintaining an A average of the three semesters and who are recommended by their teacher, can receive a certificate of merit from FLAIR. There is no cost and teachers will award the certificates at their schools. We hope this will encourage students to continue their study of foreign languages in high school and college.

Minutes of the FLAIR Steering Committee Tuesday, January 10, 2017 The FLAIR steering committee met at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, at Mi Rancho Mexican Restaurant on Washington Road. The following members were present: Julio Ávila, Di Johnson, Richardson Lane, Christy Presgrove, Sonia Puerta-Quinn, Jana Sandarg. Jana prepared the agenda and Di volunteered to lead the meeting. Both Jana and Di took minutes. Everyone thanked Jana for hosting our holiday gathering in her home. Jana noted that FLAIR was founded in 1985. This past spring 2016 marked the completion of 31 years. We are in our 32nd year. Jana announced that there is a flamenco show at AU on February 19 at 7:30 pm. We set the next FLAIR steering committee meeting for Tuesday, April 18, at 5:00 pm at Mi Rancho. Send all items for the next newsletter to Jana as soon as possible. Her email is jsandarg@augusta.edu. The treasurer, Edwin Pérez, sent the treasurer’s report. As of the December 2016 bank statement, we have a balance of $3,858.29. A check for Victoria Vox ($1800) has been written, but not cashed yet. It was moved and seconded to accept the report. The motion carried.
In December, Jana sent a letter to the contact Julio provided for our speaker at this fall’s conference. We have not received a response, and Julio will call. If this does not work out, we agreed that our back-up plan will be to invite Pete Swanson to talk on “Core Practices that Strengthen Teaching and Learning.” We would offer him a $200 honorarium & mileage. It was moved & seconded to invite Pete if the first option fails. The motion carried. FLAIR last gave a talk during black history month in 2015. We like the idea, but no one is prepared to make a presentation. Jana reported that she has contacted Craig Oglesby to see if we could hold our culinary arts class at his school again. She will email dates to the steering committee once she hears back from him. As voted last year, we will give him an honorarium (gift card) for $100. This amount will be given each year. The Victoria Vox concert is Monday, January 30th, at 10 am at the Performing Arts Theater of Augsuta State University. It is free and all French teachers are encouraged to bring their students. We will give her an honorarium of $1800. The Tuna Universitaria will be coming in October, 2017. It was moved and seconded to give them $2000, as long as we have sufficient funds. The motion carried.
