CHAIRMAN’S NOTE
OTO OBSERVER
DEAR READERS, Expectations were running high in September of 2002 when Dr. David Terris became the Chairman of the newly created Department of Otolaryngology at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University. Twelve years later, Dr. Terris leaves behind a super successful department of 13 faculty members with top-notch academic and clinical production. He is to be congratulated for his superb leadership that not only met, but exceeded, what was possible for the newly created department. Dr. Terris will remain at GRU to continue to grow his already thriving national thyroid and parathyroid surgical practice. It is his big shoes that I will try to fill as the new Department Chair, but I promise to continue the legacy and upward trajectory. Dr. Gregory Postma has replaced me as the department’s Vice Chairman and Dr. Michael Groves as the Residency Program Director. Both are energetic and excellent clinicians, but most importantly, skillful leaders. AUDIOLOGY EXPANSION
PEDIATRIC OTO GROWS
Dr. Jack Borders
Our Audiology Department continues to grow as we welcome Stephanie Barrett as its new Director. She moved to GRU from Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. Due to expanding volumes, we are also recruiting two pediatric audiologists and plan to add another audiometric booth, which will include state-of-the-art ABR Stephanie Barrett technology and an interacoustics middle ear analyzer. To further expand our innovation in technology, a new VNG/ Rotary chair and a fully automated, noninvasive awake ABR will be installed in 2016.
Dr. Jack Borders will join us in July 2015 as the new Chief of Pediatric Otolaryngology. Borders completed his pediatric fellowship at Johns Hopkins University and was a faculty member in our department from 2009 to 2011. He then moved to the United Arab Emirates as CEO of Oasis Hospital. He is returning home to help elevate the pediatric division to the next level. As previously reported, Dr. Drew Prosser will join us on July 20 as Assistant Professor of Pediatric Otolaryngology. Prosser completed his residency at GRU and is currently completing a two-year pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at the University of Cincinnati.
OTO OUTREACH
Dr. Drew Prosser
We are happy to welcome a friend and an excellent otolaryngologist into the GRU Otolaryngology family. Dr. Art Torsiglieri will join us part-time as an Assistant Professor and will provide care to patients at our Georgia Regents Medical Associates location at Lake Oconee. Torsiglieri received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania Dr. Art Torsiglieri School of Medicine and remained there for his internship and residency. He has been in general otolaryngology private practice in Georgia since 1990, is a visible leader of the specialty in the state, and always wanted a chance to interact with and teach residents. Torsiglieri is a Past President of the Georgia Society of Otolaryngology-HNS and is actively involved in the Medical Association of Georgia.
Dr. George Harris

Dr. George Harris, a faculty member of our department since 2012, now sees children at the GRHealth West Wheeler Road Pediatric Practice Site as part of a multidisciplinary approach to pediatric problems in an outpatient facility setting, away from the downtown campus. There are more board-certified physicians, more specialties, and more services at this site than any other practice group in the region.

VOICE, AIRWAY, AND SWALLOWING DISORDERS
The mission of the Georgia Skull Base Center is to dramatically improve the medical care of patients with diseases of the skull base in the Southeastern United States. The center corroborates with the Department of Neurosurgery and offers minimally invasive techniques in the management of benign and malignant skull base tumors, cerebral aneurysms, and diseases of the skull base to adult and children patients throughout the Southeast. In addition, the center also offers open skull base surgeries for patients who are not candidates for minimally invasive techniques. RESIDENT & ALUMNI NEWS
RESEARCH AWARD Great news from the Triological Society! Our fourth-year resident, Dr. Lauren White, won the James Harrill, MD Resident Research Award for her paper titled “Why Sinonasal Disease Spares the Inferior Turbinate-An Immunohistochemical Analysis.” The abstract was presented at the Triological Sections meeting in San Diego, California, January 2015. White conducted her basic science research during the required resident research rotation she completed in the third year of her training. Congratulations Lauren!
FROM THE
PROGRAM DIRECTOR Michael Groves, MD
We are excited to announce the results of our highly successful residency match, which will bring Calvin Myint and Zachary Zimmerman to Augusta in June. Both of these gentlemen will be superb additions to our department and will have long and illustrious careers in Otolaryngology. Calvin joins us from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and received his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of California – Berkeley. He originally hails from Myanmar and is fluent in English, Burmese, and Chinese. He hopes to pursue a career in Head and Neck Surgery after seeing the ravages of squamous cell carcinoma related to betel-arecha nut chewing in his native country. Zachary is a Florida native who completed his medical degree at Florida State University College of Medicine, with a brief detour to North Carolina to complete his bachelor’s degree in classics at Davidson College. He has a passion for helping kids and has participated in numerous teaching, tutoring, and coaching activities for children during his college and medical school careers. Although this passion may lead him to a career in pediatric otolaryngology, he is keeping an open mind with regard to his future subspecialty choice. We are proud that our residency attracts fantastic individuals from across the country, and both Calvin and Zachary will add to this fruitful diversity of backgrounds and interests. Welcome, Calvin and Zachary!
