New Faculty Development Fellows in The Office of Faculty Development and Teaching Excellence !

OFDTE announces three new Faculty Development Fellows for the 2016-2017 academic year: Dr. Robert Bledsoe, Dr. Deltrye Holt, and Dr. Georgios Kallifatidis. Faculty Development Fellows each develop and implement a new initiative or program and provide support for this new initiative as a concise deliverable workshop, seminar, or training. Fellows meet weekly with the Director of Faculty Development to examine literature on faculty development, review program proposal plan/implementation, and organize involvement with ongoing OFDTE activities. Service as a Faculty Development Fellow is a professional opportunity for faculty members who wish to gain experience in faculty development that may, in turn, serve their departments and/or colleges. Faculty Development Fellows will receive travel funds for one faculty development conference.

CURS Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship 2016 Summer Scholarship Program (SSP) The CURS department began hosting the SSP on May 18, 2016. One of the major changes for this year is the option to host research over 9 weeks instead of only 6. Our faculty and students have voiced the need for additional time to allow substantial results to be found over the summer program. CURS will be hosting 16 Research Projects over the summer to include 38 students. Please join us for the Summer Symposium to be held on July 21st in the JSAC Ballroom at 4pm. The faculty proposals accepted are: Dr. Candace Best, Dr. Laurence Miller, and Dr.Tadd Patton from the Psychology Department in the College of Science & Mathematics; Dr. Siva Panda and Dr. Angie Spencer from the Chemistry/Physics Department in the College of Science & Mathematics; Dr. Jennifer Bradford and Dr. Maria Sabbatini from the Biological Sciences Department in the College of Science & Mathematics; Dr. Ellen LeMosy from the Cellular and Biological Sciences Department of MCG; Dr. Greg Passmore from the Medical Lab, Imaging and Radiologic Sciences in the College of Allied Health Services; Dr. Melanie O’Meara from the Communications Department in the Pamplin College; Dr. John Hayes and Dr. Wendy Turner from the History, Anthropology, and Philosophy Department of the Pamplin College; Dr. Hannah Bennett, Dr. Graeme Connolly, Dr. A. Maleah Holland, and Dr. Amos Meyers from the Kinesiology Department in the College of Education. CURS looks forward to supporting faculty research with students and is steadily growing as more undergraduate students are interested in these projects. Thank you to our faculty who support these students and allow this amazing opportunity.

Space planning for Academic Success moving forward! Open, airy and flexible were the three most frequently used words when planning the new academic success area. The overall goal is to create a positive space to promote student learning in this tutoring and academic coaching hub and we think we achieved just that! This 5000+ square-foot space is on the first floor of University Hall and scheduled to open in the fall semester. Initial services will focus on supporting students in their first two years of study and courses in the core curriculum. The planning process included faculty and staff from multiple units and utilized current best practices in academic space planning. Dr. Lorraine Evans (Executive Director), also visited similar centers across the state to learn what works and what doesn’t in practice to optimize this opportunity to create an effective learning space. The big picture involves a minor remodeling of the former IT and Media center in UH and the results look good!

Figure 1: Floor plans for the Academic Success space Administrative offices are on the edges of the space and house the Executive Director, the FYE/SYE Director, an Academic Coach, two Tutor Coordinators and office staff. The overall color scheme is grey and white with pops of green and blue. The design team has done a fabulous job here and generated a modern yet comfortable space that is flexible and welcoming. The artist renderings of the space are included below. To maximize the light we will have floor to ceiling glass at the front entrance and LED lighting throughout. The space has seating for more 180 students at any given time. The front area (1) has a coffee-house vibe with round tables and access to a coffee machine.

Space planning for Academic Success moving forward!

The main floor behind the reception desk (2) has movable rectangular tables and chairs to allow for one-on-one tutoring session as well as group tutoring. There are multiple mobile glass boards in this area as well as a charging bar and soft seating.

Space planning for Academic Success moving forward! As you move through the space the seating options shift. The corner at the back of the room (3) has booth seating and a large sectional area for group work. Round tables with moveable chairs fill the corner.

At the back of the space (4) are two active learning rooms. One has high top tables and bar stools while the other has bench seating and stools, all of which are surrounded by glass boards.

Overall, we think the space will be great and a fabulous place for our students to learn and thrive! *If you have any questions, comments or suggestions please contact Dr. Lorraine Evans at loevans@augusta.edu .
