Thyroid Lumps and Bumps

Thyroid Gland

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck that secretes thyroid hormone and controls your metabolism.

Thyroid Lumps & Bumps

Thyroid lumps and bumps are very common. The majority don’t cause symptoms and can’t be felt. A common name for a thyroid lump is a thyroid nodule. Approximately 5 percent of thyroid nodules are cancerous.

Thyroid Nodule Cancer Risks

Factors that increase the risk that a thyroid nodule will be cancerous include: • History of radiation exposure • Family members with cancer

Thyroid Ultrasound

A thyroid ultrasound is used to find nodules in the thyroid. It is a fast, painless, and safe way to help guide a patient to further evaluation if needed.
