August 7 / Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time into music ministry like I did, no one gave you an instruction manual. Maybe you had some musical training already, but you soon discovered that knowing how to make music didn’t mean you knew how to lead music for a singing, worshiping assembly. I went through a lot of trial and error and made some awful decisions early on. (“Let It Be” for Immaculate Conception, really?) But I got better with lots of help and humility. Although I didn’t get a user’s guide on day one, a wise mentor did hand me a copy of the Vatican II documents. He said, “Read this if you want to work for the church and succeed.” I thought

I was there just to play music at Mass. He knew better. Next to the presider, the one who leads the music probably has the most influence over how the assembly will pray at any given liturgy. Music ministers lead prayer as much as we lead music. So we have to know the church’s way of praying. So for those of you just starting out, think of these upcoming commentaries as your quick start-guide to liturgical music ministry. And if you’ve been doing this a while, let’s use these weeks of late Ordinary Time to review some basics. Let’s get started. Here’s your manual. Read on. —DM

August 14 / Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time prayer, it’s easy to get defensive about our preferences. The mentor who handed me my first copy of the Vatican II documents knew, however, that those who prepare the assembly’s prayer must be driven by something more than preference. They must stand with the entire people of God on the broad tradition of the church at prayer. Vatican II’s first document, the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (CSL), starts with the understanding that liturgy is bigger than us and our comfort levels. The liturgy is first the work of Christ praising the Father. Second, when we participate in Christ’s work through visible human actions and signs, like

singing or intentional silence, we are consecrated to show Christ’s Spirit to the world (see CSL 2, 7; note: church documents are referenced by paragraph number, not page number). In liturgy, we do not recreate the past but open ourselves to the Spirit, who renews the present by giving us a foretaste of the heavenly liturgy already being celebrated by the saints and angels (see CSL 8). That heavenly liturgy is less about musical style than about attitude—that what we do here matters. It changes the world. For that kind of work, we need all our treasures, past and present. And we need everyone, going beyond their comfort for the sake of the other. —DM

August 15 / Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary liturgy need more than just religious words. They need a specific “orientation.” Even when we focus on Mary or the saints, our liturgical orientation is always toward Christ in praise of the Father. In a document guiding Marian devotions, Pope Paul VI said that the prayers and songs we use at Marian feasts should be derived from the “one worship which is rightly called Christian, because it efficaciously originates in Christ, finds full expression

in Christ, and through him, in the Holy Spirit leads to the Father” (Marialis Cultus 24). Even in today’s entrance antiphon, Christ is our focus: “Let us all rejoice in the Lord, as we celebrate the feast day in honor of the Virgin Mary, at whose Assumption the Angels rejoice and praise the Son of God” (Roman Missal). As you choose songs for the Assumption, don’t go by lyrics alone but by orientation. —DM

August 21 / Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time liturgical tools you need to master to be a competent and credible liturgical music director, especially if you are in charge of choosing music for Mass or other sacraments. We’ll take a closer look at each tool over the following weeks, but for now, here’s a general overview. The first is the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar. Although the structure of the Mass is generally the same, there will be some differences based on when it occurs during the year. Whenever you choose music for Mass, the liturgical calendar is the first thing you consult because it will guide you in how to use the other tools.

The second tool is the Catholic Lectionary. It regulates the readings to be proclaimed at Mass for any given day of the liturgical year. It also provides the reading options for each of the sacraments. The Lectionary dictates which psalm you sing for the responsorial psalm, the verse for the Gospel acclamation, and any other songs (called “sequences”) required for special days. Finally, you need to know how to navigate the Roman Missal (formerly called the “Sacramentary”). This is the book of prayers for Mass. It also gives directions (or “rubrics”) for the priest, deacon, and other ministers, such as the cantor, and provides antiphons (short musical verses) assigned for each Mass. —DM

August 28 / Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time to realize how powerful the liturgical calendar is. Beyond determining the day’s Mass, it shapes our Christian faith. When we attend to the liturgical calendar, we are formed by the mystery of the Incarnation. For when the infinite God dwelt among us in finite human time, every second became a doorway into the divine eternal. Time is now a “sacramental,” helping us see our future promise in Christ uniquely present right now. Still, as music ministers, we need to know what liturgical season we’re in and which Mass of the day to prepare. An ordo helps. It is a tool that organizes the liturgical calendar for a particular year and locality by combining the dates of that year

with the temporal and sanctoral universal and local calendars. The temporal calendar organizes the weeks of the liturgical year and seasons, such as Advent or Ordinary Time. These are regulated by the dates of Easter (which changes every year) and Christmas. The sanctoral calendar marks the feasts of the Lord, Mary, and the saints, which are typically stable and set by calendar year date. An ordo uses a table of precedence to determine which calendar has priority on each day for your particular diocese, parish, or religious community. Although universal ordos are online, for the most accuracy, use the version that is proper for your specific community. —DM

September 4 / Twenty-Third Sunday In Ordinary Time the Bible not as individuals but through communal hearing of Scriptures within the assembly on a schedule determined by the liturgical calendar. The Catholic Lectionary organizes three or more biblical passages (including psalms) for each day of the liturgical year and for each sacrament and other rituals. Juxtaposing these passages with the liturgical calendar reveals a facet of Christ’s paschal mystery, which is always our foundational orientation. We do not pick random passages but are handed assigned texts. This reminds us that God’s Word orders and interprets our lives because it is not a static historical text but Christ alive in our midst.

Songs for Mass should attend to not only the liturgical season but also the lens that the assigned readings give us into the paschal mystery that day. Use an ordo (see last week’s commentary) to prepare the correct Mass for the day, then find that Mass in the Lectionary. Read the Gospel first, then the first reading, followed by the responsorial psalm. These will summarize the focus of that Mass. Other texts you’ll need from the Lectionary are the seasonal common psalm options, the verses and seasonal refrains for the Gospel acclamation, and other required sung texts called “sequences” for Easter and Pentecost. Find the Lectionary in your parish sacristy, or get a study edition of your own. —DM

September 11 / Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time to be an excellent music director, you need to master the Mass’s ritual book, the Roman Missal. Along with the Lectionary, the Roman Missal gives you the structure, rules, and guidelines you need to prepare every Mass of the liturgical year and the texts to sing for special feasts. For example, you’ll want to know the three options for beginning the Palm Sunday Mass, the suggested music for the Adoration of the Cross on Good Friday, and the notation for the Exsultet at the Easter Vigil. You’ll need to decide with your parish staff which version of the Pentecost Vigil to prepare, and you’ll want to rehearse with the person chanting the Announcement of the

Date of Easter or the Christmas Proclamation. Even for ordinary Sundays, the Roman Missal guides you, through antiphons for each day, to appropriate song texts that complement or match the focus of that Mass. You’ll also find the General Instruction on the Roman Missal (GIRM), the “instruction manual” for the Mass; the Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and Calendar, which guides you on the seasons and feasts; and all of the chants for the order of Mass. Spend time studying your parish’s copy, or purchase your own. It’s that important if you want to learn to do more than just choose four songs for Mass. —DM

September 18 / Twenty-Fifth Sunday In Ordinary Time one way we encounter Christ, then that relationship deepens over time even if—perhaps because—we do the same rituals and tell the same stories year after year. It grows because we are never the same person we were from the last encounter. In this way, the liturgical year is more like a spiral than a repetitive loop. The familiar ritual landmarks along time’s passage give us a place to stop, look back, and see how Christ was present, forming us on the way toward our heavenly home. On this pilgrimage, we have companions who help us see things through a different lens. In one year, Year A, Saint Matthew is our guide; the following year, Year B, is Saint Mark; and

in Year C, Saint Luke. Saint John accompanies us each year at its most important moments. Although each evangelist might tell the same story, each has a different take, and we hear them differently than we did before because we are different too! This three-year cycle determines from which Gospel we generally read on Sundays that year, starting on the First Sunday of Advent. (Note that weekdays operate on a separate two-year cycle.) Currently, we’re in Year C. Knowing which cycle you’re in helps you see and prepare the entire liturgical year as a cohesive journey rather than discrete moments. —DM

September 25 / Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time the liturgy’s timekeepers. At the most basic level, making music requires that we “keep time,” establishing pace by the number of beats per minute and dividing beats per measure into rhythms. We also “mark time” by what we sing … and what we don’t. Some things we sing only once a year; others signal the beginning and end of a season; still others we sing every time we gather for Mass. As you prepare the music each week, you will want to understand how your choices help the assembly enter more deeply into the paschal mystery through time and the liturgical year. We’ll start with what we might sing at every Mass.

Ritual music for Mass can be categorized as “ordinary” or “proper.” The ordinary of the Mass (not to be confused with the “order of Mass,” referring to the entire Mass) are texts that generally do not change. Some of these are the “Lord, have mercy” or “Kyrie” responses in the penitential rite; the Gloria; the Creed; the eucharistic prayer acclamations; the Lord’s Prayer; the Lamb of God. Their repetition helps the assembly enter into prayer as if it were a dialogue with a loved one—intimate, familiar. Keeping the music for the ordinary of Mass constant from week to week, changing settings only occasionally, helps the assembly pray the ritual with ease. —DM
