October 2 / Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time look at the Mass “propers,” which, as the name suggests, are proper texts for a specific occurrence. In the Roman Missal and the Lectionary, each Mass has specific prayers and texts that change depending on time of year or occasion, such as a sacrament. The Lectionary propers you need to follow are the responsorial psalm, the Gospel acclamation refrain and verse, and the occasional sequence (a hymn sung before the Gospel acclamation). Use the assigned texts as much as possible, especially for the responsorial psalm, because it is part of the Scripture proclamation for that specific liturgy, contributing to the “lens” through which we encounter the paschal mystery. However, at times, you

can use a “common psalm” that is more familiar to the assembly (see GIRM 61). Find these options in the Lectionary 173–174. In the Roman Missal, pay attention to the entrance and Communion antiphons for each Mass. These are short scriptural texts that are sung or spoken at the opening procession and the distribution of Communion. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal allows the use of other texts (see GIRM 48 and 87), and many parishes take that option. But like the responsorial psalm, these antiphons give us a deeper insight into a specific celebration. If not singing these texts, at least use them to inspire your song choices. —DM

October 9 / Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time what to sing from the Mass ordinary and propers. Let’s take a look at what you don’t sing. This happens mostly in Advent and Lent. For some background, we turn to another liturgical document, the General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar (GNLYC), which gives us the basic theology of the liturgical year and its individual parts. You can find this online or in the front section of the Roman Missal. The GNLYC describes Lent and Advent as preparation seasons. Lent prepares us for Easter, and Advent for Christmas. Lenten preparation takes on a more penitential character, while Advent’s is more expectant, although some liturgists argue that both seasons have elements of penance and expectancy.

Musically, the preparatory nature of both seasons has us refrain from singing certain elements. In Lent, which goes from Ash Wednesday to the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, and on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, we refrain from singing the Alleluia until its return at the Easter Vigil. Instead, use the acclamation and verse options found at Lectionary 223. In Lent as well as Advent, from the First Sunday of Advent to Christmas Eve, we refrain from the Gloria. The exception for this is during a solemnity, such as Immaculate Conception or Saint Joseph. When in doubt, check your ordo. —DM

October 16 / Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time respond to rejection with force or hostility is strong. Just look at how many Twitter wars and Facebook fights even well-meaning Christians get into. And last week, the disciples would have fire-bombed the Samaritan town that had rejected them! Jesus’s example of moving on isn’t such a bad idea for any disciple. But Jesus is a different kind of messiah—a lamb, not a wolf. We should expect he wants more than for us to just “shake it off.” In our mission as disciples, Jesus instructs us to say two things every time to everyone, regardless of how we think they will respond and whether or not they welcome us and the Gospel

we bear. First we say, “Peace to this household.” Even before we know whom we are speaking to or what their reaction will be, we bless them with peace by our words and our deeds. The Gospel will never be heard by force but by peace. Second, whether or not we are welcomed, we proclaim through our words, attitudes, and actions that “the kingdom of God is at hand.” The invitation to God’s reign is given without judgment, freely to all. Our mission is not to change people’s minds but to be Christ’s presence of peace, visible signs of God’s reign in a world too quick to react like wolves. —DM

October 23 / Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time of progressive solemnity, let’s look at texts that are only sung at the most important days of the liturgical year. These texts do not accompany any ritual action because the singing of the text is the ritual. Arguably, the most important of these is the Exsultet, sung at the Easter Vigil, the pinnacle of the liturgical year. The Exsultet is a proclamation of praise to the Father for Christ the Light symbolized in the Paschal Candle, lit for the first time that night. In the Exsultet, we recall how time and again God saved us from the darkness of death. Similar to the eucharistic prayer, in which we offer bread and wine and ourselves to the Father to

be transformed by the Spirit into the Body and Blood of Christ, we offer the Paschal Candle as a “sacrifice of praise,” that we, too, may radiate Christ’s light to the world. Because of the Exsultet’s significance, the rubrics give no option for it to be spoken; it needs to be sung! The deacon is the normative minister to lead it; the presider or a concelebrant can also lead it. But because it should be sung well, a lay cantor may sing the proclamation. Find the directives and musical notation for the Exsultet in the Easter Vigil section of the Roman Missal, paragraphs 18–19. —DM

October 30 / Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time church highlights the preeminence of the Easter season in the liturgical year is by prescribing two special sung texts called sequences to bookend the season on Easter Sunday and Pentecost Sunday. Historically, the gradual (the psalm between the first reading and the Gospel) ended with an “alleluia” in which the final syllable “ah” was sung over a long series of notes called a melisma. This extension of the gradual became the sequencia. Religious writers began creating alternative texts to sing in place of “ah.” Eventually these developed into completely separate pieces for each liturgical feast, with new melodies and religious poetry. The dramatic text of these musical poems was often sung antiphonally, with

verses alternating between two choirs or a soloist and choir. At one point, there were about five thousand sequences in the liturgical calendar! This extravagance was part of the problem progressive solemnity tries to address. Today, only the Easter and Pentecost sequences are required (see GIRM 64), and those for the Body and Blood of Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows are optional. The Easter and Pentecost sequences are sung by the choir, cantor, or assembly after the second reading, before the Alleluia. The texts, found in the Lectionary, have been set to traditional chants as well as newly composed melodies and adaptations, which are available in most hymnals. —DM

November 1, 2 /All Saints/All Souls Saints is not a once-a-year text, but we sometimes think it is because we encounter it most often only at the Easter Vigil. But the Litany of Saints has a rich tradition of being a principal way the church prays for God’s help in times of need. Therefore, you can help your assemblies pray fully by utilizing this special musical form of prayer more often. The Litany of Saints is intercessory prayer, similar in purpose to the Universal Prayer (or General Intercessions) at Mass. So you will find the Litany of Saints taking the place of the usual intercessions at liturgies of ordination, consecration to religious life, blessing of an abbot or abbess, or dedication of a church or altar.

The church also sings the Litany as a processional song, accompanying the procession to the font at baptisms or the entrance procession on the First Sunday of Lent. Some communities also use the Litany to accompany the body of their deceased to its final resting place. The Litany of Saints is certainly appropriate as an opening song for today’s Solemnity of All Saints. With careful preparation, you might even sing it in place of the intercessions today. The level of solemnity you desire whenever you use the Litany will determine the setting you choose, whether the traditional chant or another arrangement. —DM

November 6 / Thirty-Second Sunday In Ordinary Time taught me that getting the notes right wasn’t enough to make music. I had to keep in mind the musical “line.” Every piece typically begins with a theme, builds it to a climax, and then resolves it, restating the theme in a new way at the end. Good musicians play each musical phrase with this in mind so that the high point is clear and what comes before and after work together to get us to and from that climax. My teacher described it as “making the musical line go somewhere.” This is also what progressive solemnity calls us to when preparing the community’s prayer. If the liturgical year were a musical piece, the Easter season,

from Easter Sunday to Pentecost, would be our climax. That opens with our premier celebration, the Easter Triduum, which culminates with the Easter Vigil. Lent sets up the high point, while Advent and Christmas began the year by establishing the overall theme of Christ’s paschal mystery. Ordinary Time throughout opens the variety of ways to hear that theme anew. As the liturgical year-end approaches and you start thinking about Advent, first ask yourself: How will we make the high point clear? How will we get there musically? Where will we go after it? And how will our musical choices and arrangements help the assembly along this journey? —DM

November 13 / Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time in both music and liturgy is silence. In musical performance and in ritual prayer, silence is more than the absence of sound or a passive pause in action. It is the music found in the space between the notes. All good musicians get this, but we don’t always know how to translate that into the liturgy. First we must understand what sacred silence is. As silence is inherent to music, it is an integral part of prayer. Ritual silence is stillness in action. We quiet our bodies so that our minds can actively focus. What we focus on depends on when it occurs in the Mass. In the penitential act and after every “Let us pray,” we are silent and still in order to recollect our thoughts. After

the readings and homily, we reflect on what we have just heard. After Communion, we praise God in our hearts together, and before Mass we prepare ourselves for communal prayer (see General Instruction on the Roman Missal, 45). Especially after the readings and Communion and before Mass, music ministers determine whether and how these prescribed silences happen. Be attentive to the space you give in these moments. And at every ritual silence, take care to also be still as much as possible—not turning pages or adjusting instruments but focusing yourselves as leaders of prayer. —DM

November 20 / Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe basic liturgical music skills, and with consistent attention, you will master these elements. But there’s one skill that will always challenge you. That is to lead as Jesus led from the cross. As I became more adept at liturgical music, I believed my role was to serve the liturgy using the best our tradition could offer. I scoured our sacred music resources and chose what I thought were the most inspiring pieces showcasing our church’s treasures and our music ministers’ gifts. Each week I worked hard to get the people to sing and understand the liturgy. And when they didn’t, I sang louder. When they resisted,

I stared them down. When they complained, disagreed, and rejected what I was doing, I grumbled about their ignorance, wielded my power, and barreled ahead without them. As we honor Christ the King on this last Sunday of the liturgical year, I see how wrong I was and still am whenever I believe my purpose is to serve the liturgy instead of the people who pray the liturgy. To lead like Jesus led from the cross is to be present to the ones you serve even when they reject you, share their pain, offer mercy in place of resentment, and love them more than the music, even more than the liturgy. Love them more than yourself. —DM
