April 24 / Second Sunday of Easter of average Catholics to describe the paschal mystery, and you’ll get some version of “the passion, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus.” This basic definition is certainly true, but what does it really mean? The paschal mystery is the foundation of our Christian faith. By our baptism we are immersed into it and are saved by it. Through the celebration of the liturgy, especially the Eucharist, we encounter it and are renewed by it to live this mystery in our daily lives. If the liturgy, especially the Mass, is where the paschal mystery is “celebrated and made present” and “its saving effects communicated” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1076), we who prepare the liturgy should have a deeper understanding of

it than mere shorthand. Thomas in today’s Gospel gives us an example of living the paschal mystery. When he encountered the risen Christ, Thomas immediately let go of his worldview and embraced the radical, life-changing paradigm that Jesus’s resurrection revealed. Although often remembered for his doubt, Thomas should be celebrated for his immediate acceptance of something completely different from what he had held before. To have total faith in the paschal mystery like Thomas means to die to our own stubborn belief that our perspective alone is the final and complete truth. –DM

May 1 / Third Sunday of Easter Christian Initiation of Adults describes the Period of Post-Baptismal Catechesis or Mystagogy as “a time for the community and the neophytes together to grow in deepening their grasp of the paschal mystery” (244). Let us go deeper into what the paschal mystery means especially for us who prepare the liturgy. Thomas last week showed us that having total faith in the paschal mystery means refusing to be imprisoned by our stubborn will. This week, Peter shows us what that act of faith and humility will lead to: a complete de-centering of ourselves—our needs and preferences—so that we may be bound in service to others through concrete acts of love.

In the tender dialogue with Peter, Jesus makes a direct connection between love for him and love for the people he has gathered into his flock. We cannot love God without loving the people God has created. And as liturgical ministers, we cannot love the liturgy—its beauty, art, and music—without loving the people who pray the liturgy. Our attention to the church’s liturgical documents and treasury of sacred music must lead to our concern for the needs of the worshiping assembly. We serve God and the liturgy well when we focus not on our preferences but on what truly feeds the people who have been entrusted into our care. –DM

May 8 / Fourth Sunday of Easter reading, Jesus tries to give the crowd around him some insight into his true identity. But they cannot let go of their preconceived ideas about the Messiah. Even if he can heal the blind and feed the multitude with just a bit of bread and fish, how dare he assert that he and the Father are one! For this blasphemy they attempt to stone him and eventually will arrest and crucify him. If we have followed the examples of Thomas and Peter, dying to our stubbornness and limited perspective and centering the needs of God’s people over our own, we will be opened to hear more clearly Jesus’s voice. But more than that, we will be drawn

into intimate communion with Christ and with all who follow him. That personal relationship Jesus has with the Father is also ours with Christ through the bond of the Spirit that unites us all. Personal, self-giving, open to a wider vision, grounded in love, not fear: the promise of this kind of relationship enables us to always move forward with hope. To live the paschal mystery is to reject the cynicism, negativity, and despair that keep us and others locked up in the past. In our ministries, let us be people of the paschal mystery, who persevere together, filled with joy and the Holy Spirit. –DM

May 15 / Fifth Sunday of Easter all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” ( Jn 13:35). If anyone read through some of our Catholic Facebook groups or Twitter feeds, they would conclude there are very few disciples there. Friends, let’s be honest. To the general public, we are not always recognizable as disciples on social media. Even if we don’t initiate the negative post, we often become enraged by something we read and respond with anger or self-righteousness. Being right—not being loving—has become our hallmark. In preparation for the Synod on Synodality, the Vatican issued a vademecum, or handbook, for everyday Catholics to reflect

on what it looks like when we truly listen and dialogue with one another. The handbook gives us several attitudes we can embrace in our conversations, online or in person. Dialogue “is not about engaging in a debate to convince others. Rather, it is welcoming what others say as a way by which the Holy Spirit can speak for the good of all.” With dialogue, “we must be willing to change our opinions based on what we have heard from others.” In dialogue, people’s lived faith is more important than ideologies. And dialogue must “give rise to hope.” As people of the paschal mystery, let us be recognized, even online, by our love for one another. –DM

May 22 / Sixth Sunday of Easter church are nothing new. Today’s first reading gives us a brief account of one of the first challenges the post-resurrection church faced as it grew beyond Jesus’s immediate circle of disciples. Jesus didn’t leave instructions on how to deal with changing circumstances. What he did leave us with was the Holy Spirit and one another. Our baptism into Christ grafts us into a community bound together in love by the Holy Spirit. Rather than being a constraint, this Christian bond gives us freedom to imagine new possibilities and creatively approach challenges. With our love for one another that marks us as Christian and immersed into the

paschal mystery that gives us hope, we can listen together to the movement of the Spirit. As the Synod on Synodality handbook instructs, discernment “is based on the conviction that God is at work in the world and we are called to listen to what the Spirit suggests to us.” Furthermore, in any challenge, “we must avoid the risk of giving greater importance to ideas than to the reality of the life of faith that people live in a concrete way.” As liturgical ministers, how do we listen together to the Spirit when divisions surface? How do we discern what is truly essential in the way we celebrate the liturgy and what is an unnecessary burden? –DM

May 26, 29 / Ascension feast, the Solemnity of the Ascension is primarily the beginning of a nine-day novena in preparation for the Solemnity of Pentecost. (This is clearer in dioceses where Ascension remains on the Thursday of the sixth week of Easter.) To observe a period of preparation and liminality is counter to our culture of immediacy. We like to have access on-demand, choices made quickly and effortlessly without much consequence. But the mandate of the Ascension leading us to the great sending out of Pentecost calls us to step back, contemplate, and listen intently, together: “And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed

with power from on high” (Lk 24:49). When our world gets turned upside-down, we can react with our natural instincts to fight or flight. Those knee-jerk responses sometimes lead us to resist and save ourselves or recede into fear and paralysis. But the paschal mystery opens up another way for us: a communal contemplation of and trust in the slow work of the Spirit whom Jesus promised would be with us, always. As people of the paschal mystery, can we trust in Christ—and in one another—enough to wait, listen, and then move slowly, deliberately together instead of acting on our own? –DM

May 29 / Seventh Sunday of Easter THE EASTER SEASON invites us to deepen our grasp of the paschal

Stephen and Jesus in today’s readings praised God. Praise of the Father is not dictated by our feelings but is the central orientation of our life as Christians. That stance of ongoing thanksgiving leads us to the high point of the Eucharist—sharing the body and blood of Christ. This is more than nourishment; it is our public commitment to offer ourselves completely to the Father for the sake of the world in imitation of Jesus. Not all are called to the path of the martyrs. But all of us, by sharing in Communion, are called to die to ourselves each day that Christ might live more fully in us. –DM

mystery and make it part of our lives. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults gives us four ways to do this: through meditation on the Gospel, sharing in the Eucharist, and doing works of charity together as a community (244). Much of our work as music and liturgical ministers focuses on preparing the Eucharist. Let us consider, however, how the Eucharist prepares us to live the paschal mystery of Christ and make it part of our being. The heart of the Eucharist is offering praise to the Father in Christ through the Spirit. Even at the brink of death, both

June 5 / Pentecost Spirit is present and active, something changes. In the Eucharist, simple bread and wine are transformed into the body and blood of Christ. With a blessing, ordinary water becomes a font for eternal life. And within that font, everyday people become priests, prophets, and royal children of God. Where the Spirit is, change happens. However, change also means that something dies. Ignorance gives way to wisdom and understanding; indifference and apathy to counsel and right judgment. Limited human perception opens to insight into divine will; and gloom, despair, and lifelessness give way to reverence, wonder, and awe.

Pentecost is the culminating moment of the paschal mystery in human history. From here, nothing will ever be the same again. To be people of the paschal mystery is to confess that death has not only been transformed into life but into life with a new purpose. When we ask the Spirit to come and fill our hearts, it is for the purpose of kindling the fire of Christ’s mission within us. Every time the Spirit is sent forth, we, too, are sent to co-labor with the Sprit in renewing the face of the Earth. Whenever the bread and wine are changed into the body and blood of Christ, we who share in it are also changed that we may bear Christ to the world. –DM
