April 7 /Second Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday) C H R I S T I S R I S E N , A L L E L U I A ! N OW W H AT? If our Lenten observance was more than just an annual effort to become better people, how are we living radically different lives because Jesus was raised from the dead? In the Acts of the Apostles, we witness the life-changing difference Jesus’s death and resurrection made for the first Christian community. They no longer clung to things they thought would bring them security—possessions, wealth, status, proof. When they received Jesus’s blessing of peace from his own breath, saw the nail marks with their own eyes, and touched his wounds with their own hands, everything changed. Now, their mouths would carry Christ’s message of mercy to the ends of the earth. Their

eyes would see one another anew. Their hands would heal and forgive, and they would be believed because they were “of one heart and mind.” Scripture scholar Matt Skinner calls their new way of living a “stunning display not of mutual concern but of mutual identity—an identity formed in Christ and his new life” (workingpreacher.com). Because of that community who committed their lives to one another in Christ, here we are. And because of us and how we commit ourselves to live together of one heart and mind in Jesus, others may also come to believe. For we belong to one another because all belong to Christ. —DM

April 14 /Third Sunday of Easter D ISA B L E D F R O M B I RT H , H E CO U L D N ’ T I M AG I N E what it was like to stand. But now he was walking and jumping and praising God! When he saw Peter and John at the temple, he had been begging for change, as he did every day. What he got instead was a changed life. It wasn’t what he asked for, but it was what he truly desired. The Lectionary unfortunately omits this context for Peter’s speech in today’s first reading. So his words to the crowd gathered in awe sound to us more like a reprimand than an enthralling invitation to a new life in Christ. But remember, this was Peter speaking, the one who had boasted of his faithfulness then hid

from fear and guilt; who heard the incredulous news from the two on the road—“We have seen the Lord!” Peter, who, moments later, would never have dreamt that Jesus whom he had denied could ever forgive him. During the Easter season, those who had come to our parishes asking for the sacraments are now celebrating them in our midst. They ask to baptize their baby or confirm their child, to receive Communion or marry their beloved. But what God desires to give them—and us—is so much more. May our lives bear full witness to what we can only dare imagine is possible in Christ. —DM

April 21 /Fourth Sunday of Easter W E G E T A N OT H E R S P E E C H F R O M P E T E R in today’s first reading but with a different context. Last week, Peter preached the Gospel to a crowd whose ears and hearts were opened to its message by the miraculous healing they had witnessed “in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean.” From that, the number of Jesus’s followers—even after his death—grew to five thousand. This week, detained by the religious authorities, with John and the man they had healed standing at his side, Peter preaches the very same message to a tougher audience. The Jewish religious leaders thought they had silenced Jesus and his movement by killing him. But the crowd’s response to his disciples made the

authorities even more afraid of losing their influence over the people. For what good is it to be the leader if the people aren’t going to follow you and give you credit? That was the stumbling block for the high priest and those who wielded authority with him. And it’s ours as well who stand before our communities as leaders. When we put in the work and long hours to preach the Gospel and lead the people in prayer and song, are we looking for them to follow us and give us our due? Or are we focused on the voice of the One whom we, ourselves, are to heed and follow? —DM

April 28 /Fifth Sunday of Easter M U CH H AS H A P P E N E D I N T H E ACTS of the Apostles since last week’s passage. Peter, John, and the man they had healed are released from the religious leaders’ questioning but not from their scrutiny. The Christian community thrives as the Gospel spreads. But trouble is brewing, and his name is Saul. An adherent of Jewish law, temple practice, and the political understanding of the awaited messiah, Saul viewed this Christian movement as a threat. No way would a messiah call for diversity and inclusion outside of the Jewish way of life. Better to nip this thinking in the bud than to let it infect the rest of the vine. Under his leadership, persecution of Christians intensifies.

The religious authorities jail and beat the apostles, and a mob fueled by Saul’s fervor hurls stones at Stephen, killing him, as they throw their cloaks at Saul’s feet in praise. No wonder the disciples couldn’t believe Saul was now a part of the vine he had just tried to destroy. Encountering Jesus changes everything. Mostly it changes us and how we see the world and one another. It is not for us to tend the vine; that is for the Father, the vine-grower. May the one who pruned Saul’s heart of hatred prune our hearts as well, so that we may bear witness to Christ to whom all belong. —DM

May 5 /Sixth Sunday of Easter TO DAY W H E N C H R IST I A NS A R E E V E RY W H E R E , I T is hard to grasp the magnitude of what Peter experienced in Cornelius’s home. The revelation of Pentecost that took place at the beginning of Acts is slowly becoming clearer to Peter and the early Christian community: the Spirit will not be contained to only those we like, understand, and accept. Prompted by an angelic message, “What God has made clean, you are not to call profane” (Acts 10:15), Peter accepts an invitation to the home of a centurion of the army that had done the Roman government’s bidding in executing Jesus. And it was in Caesarea, no less, which New Testament scholar Carl Holladay

calls in his commentary on Acts “the Roman capital of Judea and thus a symbol of Gentile power.” Clearly, Peter was in hostile territory. Cornelius, too, was inviting the state’s enemy into his home. But both trusted what had been revealed to them by God. Both dared to disregard society’s labels and, starting at home, tore down walls of fear and prejudice. If we let the Spirit of Christ lead us, as Saul did last week, God will redefine our relationships. “Love one another as I love you” is not a sweet sentiment among friends; it is an act of courage in the name of Christ to see one another, even our enemies, as beloved children of God. —DM

May 9, 12 /Ascension WE COME TO ANOTHER SYMBOLIC NUMBER in Luke’s account. Just as Jesus was “led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days” (Lk 4:1–2) before his public ministry, so too did Christ spend forty days with the apostles before ascending (Acts 1:3). We recall the symbolic forty days and nights of rain in the flood, the forty days Moses was instructed by God on Mount Sinai, the forty years Israel wandered the desert, and our own Lenten journey. Forty prepares us for something. When marked on a Thursday, Ascension is forty days after Easter, though most celebrate it on a Sunday. Nonetheless, we must ask ourselves: What has God been preparing us for these

past forty days? During their forty days, Christ taught the apostles about the coming reign of God, one that was not a political revolution, as they originally expected with Jesus, but more a life-changing, spiritual one. Once they received the Spirit, they would be ready to be witnesses from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. Before they could do his mission, the apostles had to be instructed by Christ. Then they had to wait for his Spirit. We, however, do not, for in baptism we have already been given the mind and Spirit of Christ. So the question of Ascension for us is this: What are we waiting for? —DM

May 12 /Seventh Sunday of Easter WE RETURN TO THE FIRST CHAPTER of the Acts of the Apostles this week, to the choosing of Judas Iscariot’s successor. There are a few things to note about this passage. First, by ensuring there would be twelve named apostles carrying out Christ’s mission, Luke shows that in the Christian community, Israel and its twelve tribes are restored. Although the number twelve is significant for both Jews and Christians, this passage is a good reminder that Jesus had many more than twelve followers; the reading mentions 120 gathered there to choose from. So we need not take the number twelve literally in our ritual imagination, especially when choosing how many people will have their feet washed on Holy Thursday, noting

that the Roman Missal makes no mention of the number of people for that ritual. Second, there’s a typo in the USA Lectionary at Acts 1:23. The Lectionary names one of the proposed choices to be “Judas called Barsabbas.” But in the actual passage in the Bible, he is named “Joseph.” Text aside, the most significant element in this reading is how the apostles discerned. First they proposed two choices, then they prayed, and finally they followed supernatural inspiration as a direct outcome of their prayer. A disciple orients their life completely to Christ, for they know he is active in every part of it. —DM

May 19 /Pentecost M A N Y D I O C E S E S C E L E B R AT E L I T U R GY in a multitude of languages. The three major ones in mine are English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. When our Irish-born bishop was assigned to our diocese, he worked hard to learn Spanish and could lead some parts of the Eucharistic prayer well. But truth be told, everything else he tried in Spanish sounded awful. What he lacked in languages, he excelled in love for the people he served. This became clear at a dedication of a new church that served a mostly Mexican and Vietnamese community. Sitting near me was an older Vietnamese couple. They had been mostly silent during the Mass, their arms crossed as was their

custom, their eyes lowered in deferent prayer. The time came for the bishop to bless the people at the end of Mass. In what I am certain was an even worse accent than his Spanish, he began bravely to lead the closing blessing in Vietnamese. I could see the couple’s surprised looks, their confused faces, then a softening in their bodies, and finally tears on their cheeks. That single gesture had made all the difference. The true gift of Pentecost is the courage and humility to step out beyond our fears and the familiar that we might enter the sacred and intimate world of another. More than just doors and mouths, Pentecost opens hearts. —DM
