February 14 /Ash Wednesday “ T H E R E ’S N O CRY I N G I N B AS E B A L L !” W E hear in A League of
Their Own. But according to the prophet Joel, there sure need to be a few tears shed in repentance: “Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; . . . let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep . . .” ( Joel 2:12, 17). Pope Francis often refers to “the gift of tears,” which is mourning over another’s suffering or over one’s own sin. In both of these aspects, the tears flow because God’s grace pierces our hearts with such love for another that when they are hurt, we feel
their pain as well. When their suffering is caused by our sin, the sorrow we feel is even greater, and we mourn the good we have not done. This grief is not being upset over making a mistake, which the pope calls pride. Rather, it “springs from having the life of others at heart” (general audience, February 12, 2020). If we forget how to weep out of love, we risk loving out of duty, for to be truly sorry is to be full of sorrow. Marked with ashes on our heads, let us wash our faces with tears and soften our stony hearts with cries that our contrition may be perfected by our love for God and for one another. —DM

February 18 /First Sunday of Lent L AST W E H E A R D T H E S E R E A D I N GS, T H E world was one year into a global pandemic. For many of us, it felt like we had been stuck in an ark all year while everything outside sought to destroy us (remember murder hornets?). In the midst of that chaos that Sunday three years ago, I’m pretty sure many of us weren’t buying God’s covenant so persistently announced in today’s first reading. Nevertheless, that’s the beauty of a covenant, especially one by God. I don’t need to believe it, keep it, or even trust in it for God to be faithful to it. Neither I nor the world need be perfect for God to be true to what Jesus preached: The kingdom of
God is at hand. God will never abandon us, because covenants do not bind precepts or ideas but the covenant makers, one to another. So do not fear the storms (or the murder hornets), for not only the rainbow but also the clouds mean God is near. And in Jesus, the new covenant, God is with us—all of us—until the end of the world. Our role in the covenant, then, cannot be to sail merrily along, waiting out the storm. Instead, let us use this Lenten flood to learn how to live with and love those God has bound us to within this earthly ark. —DM

February 25 /Second Sunday of Lent I N T H E S U N DAY L E CT I O N A RY, T H E F I RST reading is meant to complement the Gospel pericope. Why then is the Transfiguration paired with the testing of Abraham? Both are “terrifying” in different ways. One reveals God’s awe-full glory in Jesus; the other, God’s inexplicably dreadful demand. Beyond that, they seem to have little in common. On closer look, if we read the omitted verses from Genesis, we see the connection, which is God’s love for us in Christ. Abraham saddles his donkey and takes his son Isaac on a threeday journey to a destination set out by God—Moriah, the Lord’s mountain and where Solomon will build the Temple. We see
foreshadowings of Jesus’s own journey to Jerusalem where he is put to death. Saint Augustine will note that “just as the Lord carried his cross, so Isaac himself carried to the place of sacrifice the wood on which he too was to be placed” (Concerning the City of God against the Pagans, trans. Henry Bettenson, p. 694). Upon that wood, Abraham will lay Isaac, his only son, just as God gave us his beloved Son to lay his life upon the cross. And in Abraham’s threefold reply, we hear echoes of the Father, who, in Jesus, says to us, “Here I am,” so that reason may give way to faith in love unbound by reason itself.—DM

March 3 /Third Sunday of Lent “W H Y CA N’T W E U SE Y E A R B or C readings for the Scrutinies?
We’ve written prayers to fit so the assembly wouldn’t miss out on them.” I hear this every time we’re not in Year A, and, yes, one of the blessings of the revised Lectionary after Vatican II was the opportunity to hear a wider range of biblical readings over the course of three years. But sometimes having more options isn’t always better. In Gospel books from as early as the seventh century, scholars have found this specific set of readings from John’s Gospel— the woman at the well, the man born blind, and the raising of Lazarus—in that same order and always connected to days

associated with baptismal preparation. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults requires these Year A readings to be used whenever the Scrutinies are celebrated. Even the Lectionary allows Year A readings for the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent in any year. Regardless of what history and the ritual books say, the most convincing argument is that the elect will be the elect only once in their lives. Today and the following two Sundays will be the only time they will ever hear these significant readings from John’s Gospel as the elect. For that reason alone, we should let these Year A readings speak for their sake. —DM

March 10 /Fourth Sunday of Lent THE FINAL SECTION OF TODAY’S FIRST reading is the emperor
of Persia’s decree allowing the exiled Jews to return to their homeland and rebuild their temple. After years of rule by evil kings from among their own people, leading to the destruction of the temple, the fall of Judah, and the Jewish people’s exile into Babylon, God moves the spirit of Cyrus, a foreign ruler, to let the Jewish people go back home. This decree, which is the final verse in the Hebrew scriptures and also begins the following Book of Ezra in the Christian canon, signifies the restoration of not only God’s dwelling place among his people but also their relationship to God, broken by disobedience.
But restoration doesn’t mean going back to the way things were. In God’s plan, restoration, like forgiveness and resurrection, means something completely new, a whole different way of living. Restoring a relationship that had been broken by sin calls for a brand-new way of being with one another—one that acknowledges the past and what could never to be regained, repairs what can be mended, and commits all of us to a different, never-before-imagined future. As we come to the midpoint of this season of conversion, let us look forward with Easter joy in Christ whose love ever calls us home to begin again anew. —DM

March 17 /Fifth Sunday of Lent TO DAY ’S F I RST R E A D I N G CO N T I N U E S O U R L E N T E N journey of restoration. The prophet Jeremiah’s writing focuses mostly on Judah’s faithlessness and exile. But this part, called the “Book of Comfort” (chapters 30–33), describes what awaits God’s people once they are brought home. To those who broke the Mosaic covenant, God did not simply say, “Just do better.” Instead, God did something entirely different! What is new is not the covenant’s “content”—God still desired total faithfulness. What has changed is how humanity enters that covenant. No longer will we need external forces, such as fear or acquired knowledge, to draw us close to God,
as if God required from us holiness or sacred expertise to be called God’s own. Instead, God said, “I will be their God, and they shall be my people,” no matter what, for in the heart of every person, God has planted the desire for the infinite that will always lead them home. Through Jesus and the cross, God has established a new covenant with us. In Jesus’s obedience, all humankind has been given a new heart—a divine heart—so that our desire for God would be a mere echo of God’s desire for us. In Christ, what is restored is not an impersonal set of rules but an intimate relationship with the One who has always loved and longed for us. —DM
