November 28 / 1st Sunday of Advent a good paradox. At the start of each liturgical year, we begin with the end. While the world soothes us with serene Christmas images, the First Sunday of Advent warns us of the end of days when “people will die of fright” (Lk 21:26). O, what joy?! By starting Advent focused on the end of the world, we prepare for more than just Jesus’s birth. We ready ourselves for Christ’s coming at the fullness of time. Here we have another paradox. For those who have strengthened their hearts with love for all (second reading), that final day is one of hope, not fear.
Advent’s call to conversion reveals that each day of our lives is an advent in which we must look for the signs of earthly powers being shaken that signal the Spirit bringing about God’s reign. In this passage from Luke’s Gospel, the Greek word used for “world” is not the usual kosmos but oikoumene, related to political and economic structures. When the Son of God enters human history, our comfortable systems are turned upside down. The mighty are brought low and the lowly lifted up. When we see these structures that privilege the powerful crumbling to dust, let us not die of fright but raise our heads with joyful hope, for our redemption is at hand. —DM

December 5 / 2nd Sunday of Advent in which events unfold linearly, we hear the Sunday lectionary Gospel stories symbolically through the liturgical year. This is so we might recognize our place and connection to the events of salvation history. In last week’s Gospel, nearing the conclusion of his earthly ministry, Jesus prophesied the end of the days. Worldly systems would be turned upside-down so that the lowly were lifted up and the mighty brought low. Today, we go back to the prelude of Jesus’s ministry and hear a recounting of who those mighty ones were in the days of John the Baptist. This is more than just situating John in time. It feels almost like a warning to these earthly powers whom Luke sets up in U N L I K E A C H R O N O LO GY

stark contrast to the lowly prophet in the wilderness. More than a list of unusual names, Luke makes it clear that the coming of God’s reign will be a threat to those who exercise dominance over others. In this light, Isaiah’s words take on greater meaning for the earthly powers of John’s time and our own. If we desire to prepare the Lord’s way, then we will straighten up crooked systems that privilege the mighty. We will level uneven playing fields we force upon the powerless through unjust political, religious, and social structures. We will smooth the pitfalls and dismantle the obstacles along the path to God’s reign.—DM

December 8 / Immaculate Conception focuses on the announcement of Jesus’s conception in Mary’s womb. However, today’s solemnity memorializes the church’s teaching that Mary herself was conceived in her mother, Anne’s womb, without original sin, the “happy fault” we inherited from Adam and Eve. Despite the confusion this pairing causes, what light does Luke’s Gospel passage coupled with the first reading from Genesis shine upon Mary’s singular role in human history? Perhaps it is the idea of “being seen.” In the first reading, Adam hides from God, not wanting to be seen in his nakedness. How often do we hide from God and from TO DAY ’S G OS P E L PASSAG E

one another, not wanting to reveal our true selves, the selves we know to fall short of others’ expectations and our own? Yet in Mary—one of us!—our true human selves are seen, really seen. We might say “I feel seen” when someone says something that connects with our truest selves. Maybe Gabriel’s message did this for Mary so that she could see and conceive what God could do through her. Imagine if we would do that for one another. In Mary, God reveals that in our truest human nature, we are not destined to be fallen. With Mary’s example and through Jesus, her son, we are destined to be chosen to manifest God’s glory for all the world to see. —DM

December 12 / 3rd Sunday of Advent sanctoral cycles of the liturgical calendar for this Sunday this year provide us multiple facets of the mystery of Christ. On the temporal calendar, it is the Third Sunday of Advent, and this is the liturgy celebrated this day. But for anyone with a devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, December 12 will always be her feast day. If your parish has a Hispanic community, you will probably already be marking this feast in some way. But even if your parish is unfamiliar with the traditions of this day, the story of Guadalupe can bring new light to Luke’s Gospel assigned for today’s Mass. THE TEMPORAL AND

One aspect of the devotion to Guadalupe is the intimate presence she has with her people that allows her to share in their sorrows. Her desire to be close invites us to remain open enough to the other, in spite of differences, to enter into their lives and know their suffering. In that accompaniment with the other, we encounter God. Guadalupe’s invitation to encuentro (encounter) leads to the call to conversion. In her story, the hearts of the powerful were opened to see with new eyes the needs of those at the peripheries. This new vision reflects John the Baptist’s call to repentance, not solely as an act of faith but as an expression of our genuine love for our neighbor. —DM

December 19 / 4th Sunday of Advent in my family tend to be short, which makes some people think we are also quiet. But if you ever get invited to our family parties, you will hear us before you see us because we’ll be talking and laughing at the tops of our voices, telling stories and jokes, and singing songs for hours. Though small in stature, we make our presence known and heard, and you will get caught up in that family spirit. In today’s Gospel, we meet two women at their own family get-together. Like the women in my family, they often get typecast as demure, muted by a sentimental glow. But the Gospel today shows us that Elizabeth and Mary are loud and will not be restrained when the Spirit takes hold. T H E F I L I P I N O WO M E N

I picture youthful Mary calling for her cousin from the roadside for all the neighbors to hear. And Luke says that elderly Elizabeth uses her outside voice to greet her with blessings. Even John in her womb can’t help joining the clamor. What keeps this commotion from becoming cacophony? Both women were first listeners of God’s voice and believers of what they heard. Through their faith visible in their actions, they amplified that earth-shaking message: God remembers; God is faithful. God chooses the lowly and those who will not remain silent to announce God’s reign. —DM
