January 16 / 2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time is the third “theophany” in the Epiphany triptych, made up of the divine manifestations to the Magi, at the Jordan, and now in Cana. One thread uniting these scenes is that God’s presence is revealed to the outsider. In the first two scenes, those privy to God’s revelation were the stargazers from foreign lands and the tax collectors, soldiers, and misfits coming to the Jordan. Jesus’s first public miracle in John’s Gospel, turning water to wine, is known only by his mother and the kitchen staff who followed Jesus’s commands. Neither the guests nor the wedding celebrants—not even the banquet organizer—witnessed the miracle. They simply enjoyed the blessing of an amazing party! TO DAY ’S G OS P E L PASS AG E

How often we revel in the good things of life without even noticing where they come from! Whether it’s our clothes, food, or electronics, we too easily remain unaware that it’s often those on the peripheries of society who enable our undisrupted comfort. Still, the miracles in John’s Gospel never point to themselves but to the One who gives true abundance that we might believe. Jesus, the ultimate Outsider, is known only by those who stay close to the ones on the margins. By attending to those who go unnoticed in our daily lives, we, too, might recognize and see the One from whom all good things come. —DM

January 23 / 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time few years, we’ve learned much about the power of words. When spoken aloud, they can heal or destroy, calm or incite, unite or divide. We have begun to understand as well that not only the word itself but also who speaks it—and to whom—matters. Complaints of personal oppression fall flat coming from the mouths of the privileged, while motivational speeches to make better choices often dispirit those with limited good options. In this Gospel passage from Luke, we witness Jesus’s first public act of ministry. The very Word of God made flesh, anointed by the Spirit, speaks the prophetic word handed to him. Then he sits, the traditional teaching posture. However, Jesus provides OV E R T H E L A S T

neither lecture nor exegetical analysis. He simply reveals himself as the place of encounter in whom the Lord’s word is fulfilled. Did the powerful present that day, who gained their wealth and influence by exploiting unjust systems, hear Jesus’s words as an endorsement of their good fortune? When Jesus proclaimed liberty to captives and good news to the poor, did they think he was speaking of them? The Lord’s words are indeed Spirit and life and glad tidings to the poor. But as we will see in next week’s Gospel passage, those same words bring condemnation to those who too quickly believe they are meant for them. —DM

January 30 / 4th Sunday of Ordinary Time two of last week’s passage, we hear the crowd’s reactions to Jesus’s one-sentence homily on Isaiah’s proclamation: “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” The amazement of Jesus’s hometown fans quickly turns sour when he makes it clear that no one gets any perks or privileges just because they know his family. Jesus provokes his neighbors to fury when he reminds them that the prophets Elijah and Elisha ignored their own people in desperate times and, instead, showered God’s favor upon foreigners. In line with the prophets, Jesus’s primary concern is for those on the outside, marginalized by the borders we erect. This TO DAY, I N PA RT

might seem like bad news for us who think of ourselves among Jesus’s inner circle. Shouldn’t God’s grace be ours as God’s own children? The good news is that it already is! Grace given to another does not reduce our own share of it. However, the purpose of being counted among Jesus’s own is so that we might bring his healing, favor, and grace to those most in need—those whom the world has cast to the physical and existential peripheries of our concern. Prophets cannot be prophetic within the comfort of their homes and the safety of their neighborhoods. We, like them, must go beyond our circles to bring Jesus’s message where it is most needed. —DM

February 6 / 5th Sunday of Ordinary Time Gospel passage as a springboard for a talk on vocations would be to miss the boat, pun intended. The call of Peter, James, and John gives us so much more to ponder if we go further into the “deep water” of this passage. Luke’s version of the call of the disciples is the only one that includes the abundant catch of fish. This contrasts with Peter and his companion’s overwhelming failure at doing their job the night before. No wonder Jesus could simply hop into Peter’s conveniently empty boat to teach the crowd! Peter and his friends didn’t show much talent for fishing, yet that’s exactly what Jesus will call them to do. Jesus wasn’t looking TO T R E AT TO DAY ’S

for fishers; he was looking for followers. He wasn’t searching for successful people who were fine without him but people who would let him work through them. He needed those who would cast aside their control, lower their defensiveness about what they thought they understood, and, dismissing every reason to give up, simply try again at the Spirit’s command. Everyone baptized into Christ receives the same call to draw others into God’s life-saving embrace. How that call is heard and heeded depends not on our abilities but on our will to let God use our inadequacy to be the space where the Spirit can act. —DM

February 13 / 6th Sunday of Ordinary Time Luke’s Beatitudes seem to make God’s reign a zero-sum game: if you’re poor now, wait and you’ll be rich in heaven; if you’re filled now, you’ll be hungry soon enough. But several clues give us a clearer understanding of the new thing God is doing. In the previous chapter, Jesus calls Levi, the tax collector, into discipleship, and Levi gives everything up to follow. He hosts a great banquet for Jesus with other tax collectors, for which Jesus is accused of dining with sinners. Matthew’s Beatitudes has Jesus on a mountain, but Luke has him descend to a plain where the crowd had come seeking his healing power. AT F I RST G L A N CE,

Luke’s “blesseds” focus on the concrete human suffering of poverty, hunger, sorrow, hatred, exclusion, insult, and their opposites in the “woes.” Finally, the Greek word used here for “woe” does not mean “cursed” but is more like “beware!” A comfortable life is not condemnation but a caution. Maybe in God’s reign the mighty are cast down to be in solidarity with the powerless and the rich sent away empty-handed for they gave their wealth to the hungry poor (Luke 1:52–53). Happy are those who enter into a new community of love with God’s blessed ones, and woe to those who distance themselves from another’s suffering yet still hope to gain heaven’s reward. —DM

February 20 / 7th Sunday of Ordinary Time the plain, begun last week, stretches over three Sundays in the lectionary. Today, Jesus continues teaching about the new kind of community that God’s reign is building. In the old, earthly ways of thinking, there is only so much grace to go around. A world of scarcity requires the rule of reciprocity to govern the way people treat one another: do good for a person so that they will do good for you in the future; do harm to another and expect harm in return. This is simply the way of the world. However, Jesus’s disciples are called to leave behind the old ways and enter into a new way of being. Those who follow Jesus LU K E ’S S E R M O N O N

are sent to make visible God’s reign in the world by the kind of community they create with one another, especially with those at the margins and with enemies from whom they have withheld their kindness. Jesus’s disciples do not just passively avoid vindictiveness or meanness but actively work for the good of those whom the world says don’t deserve it, those they might not even like. In God’s reign, abundance rules. Thus our relationships are governed by mercy. In our divided world, God’s reign may feel distant. Yet we have only to live by its law of abundance to make it more visible each day. —DM

February 27 / 8th Sunday of Ordinary Time around the world who are ready for initiation will be sent to the Rite of Election where their bishop will choose them for baptism this Easter. In the United States, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults gives parishes the option to celebrate a Rite of Sending for these catechumens, providing the parish an opportunity to “express its approval of the catechumens and to send them forth to the celebration of election assured of the parish’s care and support” (RCIA 107). Today is a fitting time for the Rite of Sending if your parish chooses to celebrate it. (If the Rite of Election will take place at your own parish church, the Rite of Sending is not celebrated.) NEXT SUNDAY, CATECHUMENS
Hymnals

The rite is simple: after the homily, the catechumens, with godparents, are called forward one by one by name. The godparents affirm their companions’ readiness for initiation. The Book of the Elect is signed if the signing will not take place at the Rite of Election. Finally, we pray intercessions and a concluding prayer for the catechumens, then dismiss them. Heighten the solemnity by chanting the presentation, the catechumens’ names as they are called forward, and the prayer over the catechumens. During the signing of the book, reprise the antiphon of Psalm 92 from the Liturgy of the Word as an assembly acclamation. —DM LM2
