IN THE 2021 MOVIE “DON’T LOOK UP,” a news anchor rebuffs his guest astronomers. Apparently, their announcement of a comet on course to destroy the Earth in six months is too depressing for his TV audience. In real life in 2022, a meteorologist on a TV morning show said the heat wave hitting Europe was the inev itable effect of climate change, but there was still time to avoid catastrophe if we acted immediately. The interviewer laughed and said, “We want to be happy about the weather. Let’s just keep the bad news light.” It seems we’d rather reframe bad news into something “happier” than change the habits that caused it.

The prophet Joel knew that the long drought followed by a locust infestation would decimate the harvest in Judah. Famine,

economic demise, and death were inevitable unless the people listened to the prophet’s alarm and responded with prayer and fasting. Unlike our examples above, however, the people acted quickly, for they believed in God’s mercy.

Penitence is for our sake and for those most vulnerable to our indifference. This is why Lent isn’t a take-it-or-leave-it 40-day self-improvement challenge. It’s an urgent, life-or-death call to communal, systemic conversion. But there’s reason to hope. For although God’s prophets seem to bring bad news, they also announce the good: that even now in Christ, there is always time to change. —DM

THE SPIRIT LEADS JESUS INTO THE desert after his baptism to be tested by the devil. This highlights two important aspects of faith. First, recall that one of Lent’s twofold characters is baptis mal (see “Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy,” 109). Lent is the final period of conversion for catechumens ready to be baptized at Easter. The catechumenate process is an initiation. Yet our language often implies that baptism is a graduation, an end to the journey of faith. This often leads to lack of attention to the ongoing formation needs and support of adults after baptism or to delaying sacraments to keep people engaged in the church. Initiation is not the end to conversion, as if saying “I do believe”

completes our work, for Jesus’s temptations happened after his baptism. Baptism is a commencement of our mission to live our faith in the world, a mission just beginning in the baptismal waters.

Second, the Spirit we first receive at baptism will lead us to places we will not want to go: into the desert of our inadequacies, the dizzying heights of our insecurities, the loneliness of our self-sufficiency. But our hope and strength lie in the consolation of knowing that Jesus, too, faced these temptations and now stands by our side daily in ours. Even in our weakness, God does not abandon us. —DM

THOUGH LONG DEAD, MOSES AND ELIJAH, the great liberator and the prophet of the Jewish people, drop in to chat with Jesus, who emanates dazzling light before the disciples’ eyes. Then God’s voice booms from a bright cloud above, casting a fearful shadow over the disciples even as it illuminates Jesus’s true identity.

The dramatic scene certainly overwhelms, because as many times as I’ve read and heard today’s passage of the Transfiguration in Matthew’s Gospel, I had missed this one subtle detail: Upon seeing the disciples, faces to the ground in fear, Jesus came and touched them. No special effects, no bright flashes or divine decrees. Just the simple, human touch of their beloved friend.

This is what dispels their fear. What if the Transfiguration reveals not only Jesus as the divine Son of God but also humanity as bearers of the divine? Moses and Elijah were ordinary humans who did ordinary things that, through faith, revealed God’s extraordinary power to the world for a people who had lost all hope. And Jesus, born of a woman, ate and drank, walked and accompanied, touched, embraced, and loved others so completely to his death in order to show us how, as St. Irenaeus would say, God’s glory is revealed in humanity fully alive. Indeed, transfiguration is everywhere, just waiting for us to let God’s glory be seen. —DM

WE WERE IN SELMA, ALABAMA, TO see the Edmund Pettus Bridge and maybe have our flagging hope revived. He stood in our way beside a card table in the sweltering heat. A man of his advanced age could have only been out in the midday sun to hawk cheap souvenirs. His wrinkled arm beckoned. I rushed by to evade his pitch but failed at avoiding eye contact.

“Sorry, sir, I don’t want to buy anything,” I told him. “No,” he said, pursuing me, “just come and see what I did.” Now I was curious.

George Sallie’s table was strewn with photos, news clip pings, certificates, and programs bearing witness to what this

93-year-old man had done on March 7, 1965. He was one of the “foot soldiers” who tried to march from Selma to Montgomery for the Black community’s right to vote. He took off his cap to show us a long scar across his bald head, his own souvenir from the violent attack at that bridge which stopped the marchers, but not the movement.

“This is my holy ground,” he said. “I pray for people here. I tell them the story.”

The church needs nearness and proximity, Pope Francis says, if we are to heal wounds. Only by drawing near to the one wait ing at the well will we find the living water we thirst for. —DM

WHO SINNED? ISN’T THIS THE ONE who used to beg? How were your eyes opened? Where is he? How can a sinful man do such things? What do you have to say about him? Is this your son? How does he now see? What did he do? Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples? Are you trying to teach us? Surely we are not blind, are we?

So many questions, but only two matter: Do you believe in the Son of Man? Who is he that I may believe?

Jesus, the Light, gives light to a man born blind, who responds with praise and love. Everyone else debates who’s to blame, how it happened, if he’s a sinner, and if it’s even real. This insatiable

appetite for evidence distracts from faith, because proof of God is not the same as love for God.

We do not . . . seek an epistemological certainty by which we can demonstrate, through measurable empirical evidence, the reality of the doctrines of faith. Into that putrid tomb of despair where the stench has rotted us numb, Jesus cries to us, “Come out!” Even as we blame him—if only you had been here—Jesus commands that we be untied from our paralyzing hopelessness.

Despite the crowd’s and our own lack of faith, out of love for us Jesus calls upon the Father to give life to what has long been dead. He does not require our belief for him to do this. Rather, faith is the only way we will be able to witness the death of death itself. —DM
