ASH WEDNESDAY

B A P T I S M , T H E S P I R I T makes us ambassadors for Christ. To be an ambassador means we are sent to dwell in unfamiliar environments. Therefore, we are also diplomats committed to working together toward reconciliation through gracious and genuine dialogue. As music ministers, we have a unique way of representing Christ. We sing the One we represent. Christ is embodied— given a body and breath!—through our song. God’s words, appealing through us, have resonance in music. Wedded to scripture and ritual texts and heightened by the spiritual force of melody and harmony, the music we make penetrates body, mind, and heart. They are not just heard. By God’s Spirit, they

reverberate within stony hearts, breaking them open to make space for Christ’s message to echo from the inside out. But what if we envoys of Christ misrepresent God’s intent, not by wrong notes or missed cues but by daily words, thoughts, or actions out of tune with Christ’s mission of reconciliation? When we bicker, demonize, and demoralize, online or face-to-face, out loud or under our breath, we cease to speak Christ. When we amplify lies and silence the truth, we deaden the song of grace we have been given to sing. This Lent, pray that we may be authentic ambassadors, so that when God opens our lips, our mouths shall only proclaim God’s praise. — D M

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

T H E N OT E S O N A PA G E are not the song;

a set of rules but an orientation of life—a movement toward that which has been poured into one’s heart by the Spirit. This orientation becomes the lens through which one sees, interprets, and engages the world. For Paul, faith was not about following fixed laws but conforming ourselves to the living Christ who is the end—that is, the goal of all the law. We who prepare liturgy and facilitate sung prayer can be tempted to make the laws that govern our craft into idols. Musical integrity and liturgical principle certainly should be dear to us. However, closer still, in our mouth and in our heart, must be Christ who fulfills and surpasses every law. — D M

the printed rhythms and rests, not the music. No rules of theory or knowledge of music history can be mistaken for the moment a melody comes to life in the mouths of an assembly. Liturgists, too, recognize that rubrics and scripts do not equal embodied ritual. In today’s passage from the letter to the Romans (which is part of a longer meditation beginning in the previous chapter), Saint Paul reflects on the difference between the “law of righteousness” and the “word of faith,” which is already in the mouth and heart of the disciple. This word of faith is not

CHORAL SELECTIONS • The first reading and the gospel speak of trials in the desert. Although Psalm 91 is appointed as the lectionary psalm for this day, there’s no reason a different setting of that same psalm can’t be used in the same liturgy. “Jesus Walked this Lonesome Valley” is a popular choice for this day, but some have objection to the phrase “we have to walk it by ourselves.” How is that phrase heard in your community? SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

“J O I N W I T H OT H E R S in being imitators of

the rites of the scrutinies and presentations and give the elect the example of their own renewal in the spirit of penance, faith, and charity” (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults 9.4). The elect do not learn how to follow Christ by sitting in a classroom; they learn by observing other disciples in the community and imitating them. Our acts of penance, faith, and charity teach those new to the Christian way of life how to be imitators of Christ. In turn, we might be renewed ourselves to be better examples for them and for one another. Paul knew well that no one follows Christ faithfully on their own but only when they “join with others” with charity and encouragement. — D M

me, brothers and sisters, and observe those who thus conduct themselves according to the model you have in us” (Phil 3:17), Saint Paul urges the church at Philippi and us today. Far from being boastful, Paul understands that following Christ to the cross is not an individual but a communal endeavor. We need one another for support, encouragement, and example. The church recognizes the importance of the baptized community’s role in being examples of faith to those preparing to be initiated: “During Lent, the period of purification and enlightenment, the faithful should take care to participate in

a kind of promise and reminder of what faith in Christ gives. For the righteous, these words are not a guarantee of salvation, for faith is not a transactional exchange. Rather, the Creed enlightens our vision to see without a doubt that God is kind and merciful. “Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall” (1 Cor 10:12), Paul cautions, but he does not end there. With faith, he assures us, “God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it” (v 13). — D M

elect to be initiated into Christ are presented the Creed. Just before the faithful proclaim it to them, the elect are instructed to “listen carefully to the words of that faith by which you will be justified” (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults 160). Today’s second reading comes from a chapter in Saint Paul’s letter to the Corinthians that is a warning against overconfidence. Although the elect will not hear this reading on Sunday (if they are present at the Sunday Mass, they will hear Year A’s readings for the First Scrutiny), Paul’s counsel is for us, the baptized. We hand over the Creed to the elect as

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

“ W H O E V E R I S I N C H R I S T is a new creation:

breath the message of reconciliation with which we have been entrusted? Sometimes change is forced upon us by our circumstances; other times we are ravenous for the possibility of another chance. The road to true conversion has a bit of both. For Christians, we do not change just for the sake of doing something different. We change so that Christ can open another path in our hearts softened by the Spirit. Whether change is imposed or invited, Christ is ready to create something new. Let us not fear to let go of past ways and habits that keep us wallowing in resentment or despair. Let us be embraced by God’s merciful invitation to begin again. — D M

the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come” (2 Cor 5:17). This Sunday marks a little over two years since the world was changed by a global pandemic. Each of us, no doubt, has been transformed by this trauma, and the old world has passed away. The question is what has taken its place. After two Lenten seasons of penance and conversion, and a third halfway complete, have we, as Christians, become any different from those who do not confess faith in Christ? Have we, as ambassadors for Christ, become more compassionate ministers of healing in the world, communicating with every

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

L E T ’S B E H O N E S T. Many of us who have given

yet, when you needed to. Thank you for learning new things and for keeping memory of what must endure: that the body of Christ needs to sing and pray together; that we do not possess the Eucharist, but Christ in the Eucharist possesses us; and that divided as we may be at times, our hope is in Christ alone. Though we, the church, are Christ’s ambassadors, we are not the One in whom our faith rests. With the hope and promise of Resurrection, together let us strain forward to what lies ahead and continue our pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God’s upward calling, in Christ Jesus (Phil 3:13–14). — D M

our lives to the church are burnt out. We’re done for. Especially for music ministers, these past two years have been brutal. Anyone who has worked tirelessly to build a community of full, conscious, and active disciples has seen much of their effort disappear, and we are devastated. Yet here we are—here you are—giving whatever you have left to this ministry we share in the Spirit. So, thank you. Thank you for continuing to serve this sinful yet holy church, the wounded body of Christ. And thank you for honoring yourself, also the body of Christ, by saying no, no more, or not
