the Catechism and other texts to help us explain the Holy Trinity for this Sunday’s liturgies. We need to do this to ensure we are grounded in the solid teaching of the church. But if that is our only approach to prepare for this Sunday, then we might indeed communicate information about Catholicism to our assemblies but miss the opportunity to lead them into deeper intimacy and communion with Jesus. So let us also turn to the Scriptures to reveal how God desires to be known. In the first reading, Moses reminds the Israelites of God’s faithful love. Their God is not aloof or distant but takes

the initiative to connect personally with his own. This God will not give up on them, whether they turn away by choice or are captured by force. What the word of God teaches us here is that God is crazy in love with us. In Jesus, we have a God of relentless intimacy who can’t stand to be apart from us. This is the God in whose name we are baptized and in whose name we make disciples. This intimacy is also the way Jesus taught his disciples to make disciples, not with indifferent, impersonal doctrine but through closeness and proximity, in love with those whom God adores. —DM

June 2 /Body and Blood of Christ T H E LO N G E R W E WA I T TO B R I N G back the Communion cup, the quicker we will forget why we need it. The most important reason to share the cup is that Jesus told us to “Take this, all of you, and drink from it.” Yet in receiving the body of Christ, we receive the full grace of the sacrament. So why bother still with the cup? Drinking the Precious Blood is more than just a duplication of our sharing in the Blessed Sacrament; it is how we become one body: “It reminds us that Jesus’ own self-offering, his shedding his blood on the cross, is what brought about our salvation. Only the same gift of self to God will make us pleasing to him and
enable us to be instruments of God’s life to others” (Rev. Paul Bernier, SSS, This Sunday’s Scripture). If Mass were only about receiving grace, then partaking of only the body of Christ would suffice. But the reason we need Eucharistic grace is so we would go and glorify God by our very lives. That means to sacrifice ourselves for others. The cup of salvation teaches us, our children, and our catechumens what that sacrifice requires: becoming one with Christ’s body and blood. Drinking from the cup is the shedding of blood—Christ’s and our own, poured out for those most in need. —DM

June 9 /Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time T H E R E S E E M S TO B E A LOT of “passing the buck” in today’s first reading from Genesis—from Adam to Eve and from Eve to the serpent. But if we were to paraphrase today’s responsorial psalm, we might say that the buck always stops with God. In God’s mercy, humanity will always have the benefit of the doubt and the fullness of redemption available to them. For God created everything to be good, humankind to be “very good,” and Jesus, the incarnation of God, to be the fullness of that divine goodness. To claim Jesus or any of God’s children has an unclean spirit by nature is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit that has been poured out into every human heart.
When we don’t understand another person or we disagree with their lifestyle, worldview, or actions, we can so easily demonize them or, at the very least, label them in some way as “out of their minds.” When we catch ourselves doing so, let us remind ourselves and one another who the real enemy is. It is the spirit of division that prevents us from recognizing that we are all sisters and brothers. It is the spirit of blame that has forgotten that in Jesus—God made flesh—all of our sins have been forgiven. Indeed, with the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. —DM

June 16 /Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time T H E CO N N E CT I O N B E T W E E N T H IS PASSAG E F R O M Ezekiel and today’s pericope from Mark is all the tree and planting imagery. But the Gospel takes on even deeper meaning when we look at the entire chapter from Ezekiel. The segment in today’s first reading is a response to a riddle that Ezekiel poses about two eagles and plucked branches from a tree and its subsequent transplanted vine. The action of these eagles (earthly rulers) will result in poorly established, fickle growth (the downfall of Jerusalem and the line of David). But when God is the one who plucks and plants, the result is fruitful abundance for the growing branch (Israel) and all who seek
shelter in its boughs (God’s people and beyond). If we listen to today’s Gospel reading with a poetic ear and imagination, we can hear echoes of Mary’s Magnificat from Luke and the parable of the sower and seed from earlier in this chapter of Mark. When we weave these images together with Ezekiel’s allegory, what becomes clearer is that our human endeavors will find their fulfillment and success when we co-labor with God. In all we do in service to Christ’s mission, let us trust in God who plucks and plants and guides the growth that will surely come, in the most unlikely places, in ways we will not expect—beginning with ourselves. —DM

June 23 /Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time TO D AY, W E M I G H T F O C U S O N J E S U S ’ S power to calm
life’s storms and give thanks for God’s care for us. But the Lectionary’s wisdom of putting various Scripture passages in conversation with one another is that a more challenging message breaks through our initial surface reading. The key phrase that pulls us into deeper waters comes from the terrified disciples: “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” If we put the Gospel story into dialogue with the first reading, we could say that the answer to their complaint is a surprising “No,” or at least a “No, this is not about you.”
The first reading begins God’s response to Job’s questions of why he suffers such misery although he has lived an upstanding life. Over the next four chapters, God drowns Job with a relentless flood of “It’s not about you!” The tempests that erupt in our lives have nothing to do with whether God loves us or approves of us. The God who created storm and sea, sun and clouds does not bestow blessing as reward or misfortune as punishment. It’s not about us but about who is with us through it all: Jesus. As we give thanks for the blessings we have, let us be careful not to imply that those “less fortunate” are any less cared for by God. —DM

June 30 /Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time “ P L E AS E , CO M E L AY YO U R H A N DS O N her that she may get
well and live,” says Jairus to the one at the center of the crowd’s attention. Jesus will take his dead daughter’s hand and restore her to life with a brief saving touch. On the other hand, a woman who for years had endured the groping of many doctors still could not be healed by them. The feel of the crowd pressing in about her was almost as invasive and impersonal. They, too, overlooked her pain although she was right there, close enough to touch. There are different qualities of presence and contact going on in these various Gospel scenes. Jesus could have healed the child by speaking a word from afar, but Jairus needed him to see
his family’s grief and hear their weeping. The woman with hemorrhages would have been satisfied with a passing anonymous brush of his garment. But Jesus desired more—the intimacy of seeing, knowing, and connecting with the person behind that fleeting encounter. How often do those most hurting among us remain unnoticed even when they are right there next to us? They may hear our words, sing our songs, and be present at our meetings and churches. But are we present to them, near enough to touch their grief, impressing the balm of God’s love upon their wounds? —DM

July 7 /Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time P R O P H E TS G I F T E D W I T H W IS D O M O R AG E know that true change is a marathon, a long-term, generational commitment to a goal they may never see fulfilled but work toward nonetheless. When the goal is God’s reign, prophetic perseverance also needs a bit of holy detachment as a reminder that transformation is the Spirit’s job. This helps prophets remain joyful when rejected, steadfast when provoked, and hopeful when the effort seems futile. As Saint Teresa of Calcutta said, God didn’t call her to be successful; God called her to be faithful. The Black community in the United States exemplifies this prophetic perseverance. For almost 500 years, they have suffered
inhumane systemic injustice, even within the Catholic Church. Only recently have they begun to see glimpses of changed hearts, minds, behaviors, and laws. Their experience of unrelenting injustice has forged in them a level of faith by God’s mercy that only those who have suffered greatly know. Their faith is also what feeds the fire of their prophetic work and enflames the urgency of their call to each one of us to take up the task. No one chooses to be a prophet; they are baptized into it—into Christ, who is priest, prophet, and king. Let us follow the lead of those who embody such faithful persistence and know that in them, prophets continue to be among us. —DM

July 14 /Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time J E S U S S E N DS U S O U T I N TO T H E WO R L D to announce the Gospel, and we should not be deterred when the message is not received. But there’s more the Spirit is saying to us today, and we can’t be like Amaziah in the first reading who exiles the prophet because he doesn’t like what he hears. Amos, the herdsman turned prophet, was sent to the temple at Bethel in the Northern Kingdom of Israel, to its priests, religious leaders, and king. To them Amos was to convey how the Lord despised empty worship concerned only with solemnities, burnt offerings, and religious piety and not with mercy and justice for those most in need (Am 5:21–24). Many years
later, Pope John Paul II would give the same warning to his own bishops, clergy, and people: “We cannot delude ourselves: by our mutual love and, in particular, by our concern for those in need we will be recognized as true followers of Christ. This will be the criterion by which the authenticity of our Eucharistic celebrations is judged” ( 38). This week culminates a multi-year, multimillion-dollar effort in the United States at reviving devotion to the Eucharist. Will we and our religious leaders have listened to the prophets among us, or, in the end, will those prophets be shaking the dust of our own delusion from their feet? —DM

false shepherds who mislead and scatter the flock. After reading that passage, I wanted to send it to a few people with a note: “Woe to you!” But then I’d be a false shepherd myself. Using Scriptures as a weapon against our adversaries or a ramrod to force our point upon another will never end well. The word of God—especially from its prophets—scrutinizes all who hear it and acts like a mirror to turn our accusing finger back toward ourselves. Jeremiah’s warning is this: In our zeal to fix whatever we think is wrong in the church, let us not forget who the true shepherd

is. It’s not our favorite bishop, priest, or pastoral minister; not any of the disciples or the holiest of saints. Better catechesis, preaching, or music won’t fill our want; nor will the pope or any of us be the one to lead God’s people to restful waters. The only shepherd who can truly save us is Jesus. The rest of us are in that boat with the disciples or standing among the crowd as Jesus looks upon us all, his heart moved with pity. May Jesus who put enmity to death by death break down the dividing walls between us, that all may be gathered in by the one who is our peace. —DM

July 28 /Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time OV E R F I V E S U N DAYS, W E W I L L F E AST from the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel and on Jesus’s revelation as the living bread from heaven. Even in this comfort food, there is so much to savor. We can bring out the subtle flavors of these “Bread of Life” passages by relishing them with their paired first readings. Today, Jesus feeds 5,000 with five loaves and two fish, while the diners at the prophet Elisha’s own miraculous meal numbered only 100. But these people were truly starving. A famine had made their water undrinkable and their land sterile. Twenty barley loaves could not have filled their empty bellies, and yet they all ate with food to spare.
Moreover, these twenty loaves were the first fruits, that is, the first yield of that year’s crop given to the priest as a sign of trust that God would provide the people’s needs. Imagine the faith of this man from Baal-shalisha—a land of pagan gods—to offer what was probably the entirety of his famine-stricken harvest. Imagine too how this starving group recognized in one another their shared suffering and refused to hoard the little that was there for their own survival. If we were that hungry, would we do the same? If the basics of life were gone, could we give the little we had to God and to the stranger? —DM
