Most Holy Trinity — 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Most Holy Trinity (June 12, 2022) Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (June 19, 2022) Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (June 26, 2022) Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (July 3, 2022) Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (July 10, 2022) Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (July 17, 2022) Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (July 24, 2022) Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (July 31, 2022)

June 12 / Most Holy Trinity pray the liturgy of the hours from a priest at the Catholic campus ministry center where I worked as a college student. He taught us how to navigate the breviary with its many-colored ribbons and to bow every time we came to the doxology, “Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit…” There are only a couple of moments when most Catholics are accustomed to the ritual gesture of bowing: during the Creed or at the end of Mass when the deacon instructs us to “bow down for the blessing.” In daily life, however, we bow down many times: to tend to a crying infant, wash a sink full of dishes, or

watch where we’re going on a rocky trail. At times we bow our head in shame or at the memory of beloved dead. Upon bowed heads, we place crowns and kisses. Bowing our heads helps us to notice the things we might miss along the way. Little less than angels, we are swept into the love of Father, Son, and Spirit. Therefore, at the Trinity’s name, we bow as a sign of love and service. In their name and by their sign, we are crowned with glory—from head to gut and shoulder to shoulder—not for praise but to be good stewards of God’s handiwork. –DM

June 19 / Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ coffee like I do, you know what it’s like after going without for a long time and you take that first precious sip. Especially with fine coffee, but even with an average cup, the moment it hits your tongue, you remember what you had missed. It’s not mere intellectual cognition, as in: Yesterday I didn’t have coffee; today I do. It’s a whole-body revelation of smell, sight, touch, taste, and sound—Mmm—sinking you into warmth and goodness. As I write this, it has been 20 months since I shared the Communion cup with a worshiping assembly. Even before the pandemic, the practice among Catholics of sharing in the blood of Christ seemed to be waning despite valiant efforts to encourage

it and dispel fears. Then came COVID, and no cup for the people became the norm. As the disciples in today’s Gospel said, we are in a deserted place here. Others have already written eloquently about what we lose when we lose the Communion cup. I can only grieve. Yes, my head understands concomitance. My body, however, feels the difference. I doubt we will have seen the Communion cup’s return by the time we get to today’s solemnity. But until that first sip again with you, I will bless God for all we have, eat with the crowd, and be satisfied. –DM

June 26 / Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time times from “imposter syndrome.” You know— that feeling you aren’t qualified for the job despite evidence of the contrary. It’s often an excuse to avoid the risk of doing something new and just stay in place with our familiar comforts. In discipleship, however, there can be no imposter syndrome because what qualifies us for mission is not ability, experience, or knowledge. Just look at the Scriptures! Time and time again, God chooses the least qualified upon whom the mantle of priest, prophet, and king are placed. That choice is manifested today through initiation into Christ. It is initiation that enables us to do the job of disciple: “[T]he three sacraments of Christian

initiation closely combine to bring us, the faithful of Christ, to his full stature and to enable us to carry out the mission of the entire people of God in the Church and in the world” (General Introduction, Christian Initiation 2). To be chosen for discipleship does not mean we can make excuses. Rather, our response to our inheritance in Christ is to be “resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem” (Lk 9:51). Like Jesus, we cannot be half-hearted, clinging to our old ways while trying to follow him. To live into our call, we must always be moving forward, never looking back, our face set like flint to the Cross. –DM

July 3 / Fourteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time Our tendency to respond to rejection with force or hostility is strong. Just look at how many Twitter wars and Facebook fights even well-meaning Christians get into. And last week, the disciples would have fire-bombed the Samaritan town that had rejected them! Jesus’s example of moving on isn’t such a bad idea for any disciple. But Jesus is a different kind of messiah—a lamb, not a wolf. We should expect he wants more than for us to just “shake it off.” In our mission as disciples, Jesus instructs us to say two things every time to everyone, regardless of how we think they will respond and whether or not they welcome us and the Gospel

we bear. First we say, “Peace to this household.” Even before we know whom we are speaking to or what their reaction will be, we bless them with peace by our words and our deeds. The Gospel will never be heard by force but by peace. Second, whether or not we are welcomed, we proclaim through our words, attitudes, and actions that “the kingdom of God is at hand.” The invitation to God’s reign is given without judgment, freely to all. Our mission is not to change people’s minds but to be Christ’s presence of peace, visible signs of God’s reign in a world too quick to react like wolves. –DM

July 10 / Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel passage does Jesus describe the Samaritan as “good.” Instead, Jesus calls him “neighbor.” Similarly, the priest and the Levite were not judged “bad.” They just weren’t neighborly. Each of us has the capacity to do both good and bad. The difference is whether we can be neighbors. The priest, Levite, and Samaritan each saw the victimized man; seeing trauma is not a neighborly characteristic. What differentiated the Samaritan from the others was closeness. He did not cross to the other side of the road upon seeing the wounded person. He approached him, touched him, lifted him, sheltered him, shared his resources with him, and invited others to do likewise.

Often we distance ourselves from those bearing traumatic wounds of ordinary suffering or systemic oppression. We avoid that part of town and dodge the beggar’s gaze. We wish victims would get over it and those grieving would cheer up. But disengagement makes no demands of us. Indifference takes no risk. Yet God’s “style” is nearness and proximity: “Mercy is made tangible, it becomes closeness, service, care for those in difficulty” (Pope Francis, April 11, 2022, Twitter). The reign of God is at hand. It is something very near to you. You have only to carry it out. Let us be like God, our neighbor, who draws near to us in our suffering. –DM

July 17 / Sixteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time on this Sunday’s Gospel, let us avoid putting Martha or Mary into convenient boxes— Martha, the anxious, resentful host; Mary, the attentive but inconsiderate follower. Both are doing the work of discipleship. Both are hearers of the word and doers. Both offer hospitality by opening home and heart to the Word in their midst. Perhaps a better way to go deeper into this familiar passage is to focus on what Jesus is doing. Whether or not his arrival at Martha’s house was planned or an impromptu visit, having a house guest is always a disruption to our usual way of life. On one hand, we can ignore them—let them fend for themselves

along their journey. On the other, we can be good hosts. We rearrange or even put aside our daily tasks to attend to our guest. We share our food, space, and resources to make sure they are comfortable. We open our lives to them, with our joys and worries, and we welcome and receive theirs. Along with the good Samaritan last Sunday, Mary and Martha show us what we are to do when our lives are disrupted by God’s presence in the stranger on the road or the friend dropping by. Whether convenient or inconvenient, God’s reign draws near to upend our normal way of life. How shall we respond? –DM

July 24 / Seventeenth Sunday In Ordinary Time is bookended by references to the Father in heaven. This gives us an insight into the meaning of prayer, which is less a set of words than it is an expression of a relationship. Jesus’s entire being was directed to the Father to whom he would give everything, even his life, to do the Father’s will. From this orientation, Jesus is able to pray and know that his prayer is heard. When Jesus teaches his disciples to pray, he hands on not only the words that will become one of our treasures but also the relationship that he has with the Father. In Jesus, we, too, can call God our Father and have faith in the Father’s abundant goodness.

Theologian Mark Searle described Christian prayer this way: “In thinking of Christ’s mediatorial role, therefore, we should not think of Christ as coming between us and God, as a go-between accentuating our continuing distance from God even as he bridges it. Rather we come to God in Christ, where Christ is the holy ground, the very place of encounter, the way into the abyss of the mystery of God” (Called to Participate: Theological, Ritual, and Social Perspectives, p. 41). Prayer expresses and nurtures that intimate relationship with Christ who serves not as gatekeeper to the Father but as the very heart of God. –DM

July 31 / Eighteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time not kind to the rich. From the first chapter’s warning in Mary’s canticle, the rich and mighty should expect fortunes turned upside-down in God’s reign. However, Jesus does not condemn the rich merely for having wealth; look at Zacchaeus whose home Jesus blesses. Having possessions is not a sin, but neither is it the extent of one’s life. The burden the rich carry is not their treasure but their self-sufficiency, the mistake of thinking their only need and concern is for themselves. That is the rich man’s foolishness in today’s passage and throughout Luke’s Gospel. He acknowledges, consults, and praises no one but himself. His treasury is for his

enjoyment alone. Overnight, his wealth, where his heart lies, will be gone with his life. These past few Sundays, Jesus has focused on how one inherits eternal life—by loving God and our neighbor as ourselves; opening our lives to the stranger; and entering into relationship with the Father through his Son. We cannot store up good deeds for ourselves as if they were grain in our barns ensuring heavenly comfort. Material wealth and self-seeking righteousness are easy to accumulate, but they hold no currency for God. However, using what we have in daily acts of self-giving love for the sake of the other is a life rich in what matters to God. –DM
