IN NAVIGATING PAUL: AN INTRODUCTION TO Key Theological Concepts, Scripture scholar Jouette Bassler explains that the Greek root word pist encompasses more than its English counterpart “belief” implies. It includes the more relational action of “trust.” Similarly, liturgical theologian Nathan Mitchell describes faith as the “life-grounding trust . . . in the God and Father of Jesus Christ” (Called to Participate).
If we define belief as mere knowledge of the creed and church teachings, faith becomes a thing we consume and transact: belief conditionally exchanged for proof. But if we see that the belief Jesus invites all his disciples into is an ongoing relationship of
Hymnals
life-grounding trust in him, then no test or lack of evidence can plant doubt in the person with that kind of faith.
Some say that we are in a crisis of faith. So they look to science for evidence of Jesus’s real presence or scholastics to dissect the mystery of salvation. However, I believe we are in a crisis of trust, where people desire to see the evidence of our faith proven by the way we live—and they have found us lacking.
If we trust and believe in Jesus, let us live a life like his, ready where there is fear and doubt to open the locked doors of mistrust and offer a word of peace made visible by our self-giving love. —DM

“THE MASTER WAS WALKING WITH THEM along the way, and he himself was the way. . . . They were walking along, dead, with Christ alive, they were walking along, dead, with life” (Augustine, Sermon 235.2–3, translation by Edmund Hill, OP).
As music ministers, homilists, and liturgists, we rightly focus most of our attention on what happens at Mass around the tables of the Word and the Eucharist. Indeed, much depends on what happens there.
However, we might also ask ourselves today what we have missed along the way to the table of the Lord. When we are not actively engaged in the Eucharist, who is standing right in front of us? Who is inserting themselves into our conversations and
Hymnals
debates, sidling up to our closed circles looking for a way in, disrupting our calendars and finely tuned agendas and rehearsals, asking clueless questions to which we expect them to already have answers—“Are you the only visitor who does not know of these things?”
St. Augustine continues in his Easter octave sermon: “You too, then, if you want to have life, do what they did in order to recognize the Lord. They showed him hospitality” (Sermon 235.3). We are people of “the Way” as much as of Word and Sacrament, for only when we plead with the stranger, “Stay,” will we recognize Christ in the breaking of the bread. —DM

DID YOU NOTICE THE “GATEKEEPER” IN verse 3 of today’s Gospel? Who is this? We could say it is the Father who is one with Jesus and opens the gate to him. Or it could be John the Baptist, who heralded the coming of the Messiah. The power of parables like this is that there are many ways to approach them.
We might gain a new insight to this familiar passage if we connect it to the healing of the man born blind (Jn 9), which immediately precedes and gives context to this discourse. The man who had been blind desired to see the one who healed him (Jn 9:36–38). However, the Pharisees, whom Jesus accused of
Hymnals
being blind (Jn 9:39–41) and now of being thieves and robbers, expressed no desire to know or follow Jesus. The man whose eyes had been opened had also opened his heart; the Pharisees kept theirs closed shut.
Perhaps then we are the gatekeeper, the ones who must choose whether to open our hearts to Christ at the sound of his voice. The gate opens both ways—to let the shepherd in and to send his followers out. Let us pray that we may open our hearts to Jesus, who is gate and shepherd, who waits for us to unlock the door of our heart and follow him. —DM

WHO SAYS THE CHURCH DOESN’T CHANGE? Today’s first reading shows us it can, but it also teaches us how.
When conflict arose in the early church, the entire community with its leaders gathered to listen. The leadership then asked the community to call forth from among its own those whom it believed could address the need. With the community’s support and wisdom, the leaders prayed over those chosen and entrusted them to act, recognizing their necessary role within the community to serve the mission of proclaiming Christ.
We are coming toward the final phase of a two-year worldwide church synod. This process has invited all of us to journey
Hymnals
Caminemos con Jesus / Let Us Walk with Jesus 881
together to listen deeply to the Spirit in the hope of attending to the needs of the church today so that we might better proclaim the Gospel to the world. Throughout this process, many have indeed raised complaints like those in the early church, highlighting where the needs of some have been ignored. Certainly, the church of the 21st century and its context are not the same as those of the apostles. And where this synod will lead is still unknown. But the same Spirit guides us and is already changing us to be more generous and open with one another. The first step, as it was in the time of the apostles, is to listen. —DM

IN HIS MEMOIR JUST MERCY, LAWYER and social justice advocate Bryan Stevenson writes about women, men, and children wrongfully sentenced to death, abused in prison, or exploited by a criminal justice system set up against them. Their circumstances vary, but what they all share is the one thing they all need from him as their lawyer: hope.
Stevenson describes this hope using Václev Havel’s words of “‘an orientation of the spirit.’ The kind of hope that creates a willingness to position oneself in a hopeless place and be a witness, that allows one to believe in a better future, even in the face of abusive power” (p. 219). To those abandoned, an
Hymnals
advocate (parakletos in Greek) is often the only bearer of this kind of hope.
Jesus comforts his disciples with the promise of an “Advocate,” and we imagine the Spirit testifying our case before the Father that we might receive mercy. However, in Christ, we have already received mercy. What if, then, the Spirit is actually the one who testifies to us of the Father’s love, advocating for God that we might believe there is hope and life even when death is certain? The Spirit orients our spirits to God’s hope that we might bear witness in the hopeless places of the world and testify to the Father’s love for all in Christ. —DM

TODAY’S GOSPEL IS FILLED WITH “IN-BETWEENS.” The disciples worshipped and doubted; Jesus stands between heaven and earth; the disciples are ordered to come to this mountain and go to the ends of the earth.
Liminality is never comfortable. We want to know whose side we’re on, which path to choose, and eliminate any gray areas. Sometimes we approach our faith and the faith of others in a similar way, leaving no room for doubt. Yet it is to such dithering disciples, masters of uncertain belief, that Jesus gives the great commission.
When the entire mission of making disciples is placed in the hands of fickle followers, only Jesus, to whom “all power
Hymnals
in heaven and on earth has been given,” can keep the entire Christian endeavor from failing. Jesus is the door into which we enter and from which are sent, whose incarnation, death, resurrection, and ascension mends heaven and earth. Jesus is the Lord of betwixt and between as he transforms every liminal space into luminous assurance in the Spirit.
In this we can be certain: God embraces our worship and our doubt and meets us in Christ, wherever we are. Whether we’re up in the air or on the fence, burning hot with faith one day and cold the next, Jesus in the Spirit is with us always until the end of the age. —DM

WHEN UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS ARE ABOUT TO retire, they often give a “last lecture” where they answer the question: “What would you say to your students if you had only one last chance to teach them?” A good last lecture reveals the teacher’s deepest hopes for the knowledge they have tried to hand on to others. When the reason for the last lecture is terminal illness, it becomes an outpouring of the teacher’s love for others.
Chapter 14 to 16 of John’s Gospel is Jesus’s last lecture, and today’s passage from chapter 17 is its climax. It is Jesus’s prayer to the Father for his disciples and, later in the chapter, for us “who
Hymnals
will believe in [him] through their word” (v. 20). What Jesus desires to pour upon us from his heart is eternal life, which the Gospel writer describes as this: “that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ” (v. 3). Good teachers understand that teaching is more than just giving facts. To teach so that others may truly know God is to be drawn into the love of Christ who gave his heart that we all may be united in love with the Father in him. If we have learned anything from Jesus’s last lecture, it is this: Love always comes first. —DM

WHY IS THERE SO MUCH FOCUS today on the disciples speaking “in different tongues” (Acts 2:4) and on the crowd hearing them each “in his own language” (Acts 2:6)? Why is this multilingual moment so important that it is often called the “birthday of the church”?
Perhaps the answer is reflected in the worldwide Synodal Process, coming toward its final stages. The Synod on Synodality has spent most of its two-year buildup inviting the entire People of God to speak “in different tongues” from different perspectives and for all of us to hear in our own languages. What the Synod and Pentecost reveal is that no discernment,
Hymnals
no movement forward and outward, no renewing of the face of the earth can happen until we are all able to speak freely in our native tongues—that is, from our heart where the Spirit dwells—and be heard readily.
Fear will keep us from speaking and from listening. It will convince us that it is impossible for the Spirit to breathe new life into dead dust and blow open the doors we have kept locked for so long. Fear will dissuade us from believing our divided church can be one, so why even try? Jesus stands in the midst of our fear to breathe his Spirit of “Peace” once again that we may proclaim the mighty acts of God. —DM
