IF THERE IS ONE CLASSIC CHRISTIAN meme, it might be “John 3:16.” Like any meme, it takes being “in the know” to get what the meme means (to use another meme, IYKYK—if you know, you know).
Needing to be on the inside to get the real meaning aptly describes John’s Gospel. For the Johannine community, if you wanted to know Jesus and who Jesus was, you needed to believe and follow him. In John’s Gospel, knowing is more than an intellectual exercise. Knowing is a movement of the heart publicly manifested through our actions of love. The first to know and move is always God “who so loved the world” that he sent

his very self, moving from heaven to earth, to dwell among us. Through God’s Son, those who believe are drawn up in love to return once again to God.
Trinity Sunday has accrued its own set of memes. Three-leaf clovers or the three-fold states of water or other such devices treat the Trinity as an abstract theological idea trying to become concrete. But each of today’s readings shows us that the deepest meaning of the Trinity is already found in concrete human actions of love: in accompanying, mending, encouraging, and agreeing; by living in peace; and, most of all, in giving our lives for the sake of this world God so loved. —DM

Body and Blood of Christ
WE CHRISTIANS LOVE a good paradox. At the start of each liturgical year, we begin with the end. While the world soothes us with serene Christmas images, the First Sunday of Advent warns us of the end of days when “people will die of fright” (Lk 21:26). O, what joy?!
By starting Advent focused on the end of the world, we prepare for more than just Jesus’s birth. We ready ourselves for Christ’s coming at the fullness of time. Here we have another paradox. For those who have strengthened their hearts with love for all (second reading), that final day is one of hope, not fear.

Al Partir en Pan / When We Break This Bread 1035
Advent’s call to conversion reveals that each day of our lives is an advent in which we must look for the signs of earthly powers being shaken that signal the Spirit bringing about God’s reign. In this passage from Luke’s Gospel, the Greek word used for “world” is not the usual kosmos but oikoumene, related to political and economic structures.
When the Son of God enters human history, our comfortable systems are turned upside down. The mighty are brought low and the lowly lifted up. When we see these structures that privilege the powerful crumbling to dust, let us not die of fright but raise our heads with joyful hope, for our redemption is at hand. —DM

GOOD TEACHERS WORK FOR THAT MOMENT when they recognize themselves in their students. They spend countless hours trying to be good examples for their apprentices, providing an environment to immerse their students in learning. They hope their disciples go beyond simple imitation to make the teaching their own, building upon the foundation they have been given, and applying that teaching to new situations their teachers had never even imagined.
I can’t say if Jesus experienced that moment of recognition in today’s Gospel as he summoned his twelve disciples. The first one, Peter, would deny knowing him; Judas would betray

him; and the others, time and again, would show they weren’t quite Jesus material. For that matter, neither are we, who have received the same commission as those first apostles.
But here is what saves us from giving up on ourselves and on one another as Jesus’s choice for his flock. We do not need to be perfect. We need only be like Jesus, most especially in this one aspect: When he saw the crowd, he was moved with compassion for them. For this reason he calls and sends his disciples.
So let us imitate our teacher as closely as possible in his love for those troubled and alone. If we can be like Jesus in that, we will surely be recognized as his own. —DM

THE LAST TIME WE PROCLAIMED THESE readings was one month after George Floyd’s murder by police officers. Since that horrific day, many Catholic churches, bishops, and leaders have raised their voices against the sin of racism. Unfortunately, it has not been enough. A number of influential Catholics have raised their own hue and cry, denying racism still exists. The greatest harm perhaps has been done by the majority of Catholic churches, bishops, and leaders who have remained silent.
Gloria Purvis did not remain silent. A Black Catholic speaker and whole life advocate, she received complaints from other Catholics when she began talking about racism as a “sin that constitutes a serious offense against God” (Saint John Paul II,
Hymnals
Angelus, August 26, 2001). Eventually her popular Catholic radio show was cancelled without reason by the Catholic media outlet that hosted her. She said in an interview: The doors of the church are no shield against racism. . . . If we love the Lord, why are we not trying to spread his truth and the Good News everywhere? . . . Why instead are we so afraid that we won’t even take on that demon of racism in our country? . . . It is because we prefer to be comfortable. It’s because we are afraid. (Field Hospital podcast, July 6, 2022)

TODAY’S GOSPEL PASSAGE ENDS A SECTION on the conditions disciples may face as they do Jesus’s mission in the world. Only those ready to give up everything to follow Jesus are worthy of the name “apostle.”
Certainly, Christ’s best representatives are those who have achieved a level of holiness that only a few can attain. These are our saints, who are models par excellence of discipleship. We can add our pope and all who have followed in the line of Peter; our bishops, successors to the apostles; and those who have given up their own family ties to be bound in service to the church through the priesthood and religious life.
Hymnals
And yet, Jesus could not have meant that the work of mission is reserved only for these holy ones, as if the real disciples are only the canonized, consecrated, ordained, or trained. Today Jesus reminds us that the courageous act of hospitality as simple as giving one of God’s own a cup of water deserves the same reward reserved for the righteous.
Let us recognize that all the baptized are apostles “since the life of the Church is apostolic” and by their baptism are sent to work “actively in evangelization and the building up of the Church by the testimony of their life and their profession of faith” (Ad gentes, 14). —DM

JUST BEFORE JESUS OFFERS HIS PRAISE of the Father, proclaimed in today’s Gospel, he gives a long reproach of hypocritical and superficial disciples. These range from those who sought John the Baptist out of curiosity (Mt 11:7–15), to those who argued among themselves about who was worse, John for his asceticism or Jesus for his gluttony with sinners (Mt 11:16–19), to communities that remained obstinate of heart toward Jesus’s preaching and signs (Mt 11:20–24).
The common thread that contrasts and gives context to today’s passage about the “little ones” is that those who should know better, who have been given all the privileges of power, education, opportunity, and, most of all, Jesus’s own words, have resisted
Hymnals
following his path of discipleship. Understanding this context keeps us from thinking that Jesus values childlike ignorance over education and scholarly thought. Being learned is not sinful; however, pride disguised as intellectual piety is.
For Jesus, the measure of true discipleship is not intelligence but obedience. The disciple must first put on the yoke that Jesus gives, a yoke not of labor or burden but of humility. From that place of rigor, a disciple then can learn the way of Jesus, placing all their skills of reason and rhetoric at the service of the Gospel. The path may be challenging, but embracing discipline in Christ makes one’s burden light. —DM

MOST OF TODAY’S PARABLE IS ABOUT the soil. In the longer version, Jesus even gets into the weeds explaining the meaning of each type of ground. Clearly, we are meant to reflect on how receptive we are to God’s word. But I wonder if there is something more going on just beneath the surface of this familiar parable.
When we read from Luke’s Gospel last summer, we heard the parable of the prodigal son. Much of that story focuses on the younger son, reckless with his inheritance. But the story’s surprise is the father, excessive with his mercy. In a similar way, today’s Gospel passage from Matthew really should be called the parable of the prodigal sower.
Hymnals
If we have been commissioned by Christ to proclaim the Gospel, we must see ourselves in this sower, unflappable in the mission, squandering the seeds of God’s word no matter where that mission leads. Sow the seed on hardened path and rocky ground. Sow it upon thorns and drought-stricken fields. Sow the seed even when you know it will not take root, and do not be seduced by low-hanging fruit, planting only where a harvest is all but guaranteed.
Too often we are stingy with God’s love, judging the soil’s worthiness before opening our hands filled with seed. May we be prodigal sowers, and let God do the rest. —DM

ATTUNED BY LAST WEEK’S COMMENTARY TO go beyond merely judging the soil, we are ready to avoid a superficial reading of today’s parable that simply pits “us against them” in the sower’s resulting harvest. It is not for us to decide wheat from weed, just as it is not for us to withhold the seed of God’s reign.
If we have put on the easy yoke of obedience to Jesus, then our work as disciples is clear: “As you enter a house, wish it peace. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace return to you” (Mt 10:12–13). From there, move on.
But oh, it sure feels good to know that we are “us” and they are “them,” right? Today’s parable, however, is Matthew’s cautionary
Hymnals
tale that foreshadows the final judgment. There, not even the goats will know they are goats until it is time to separate them from the sheep (Mt 25:31–46).
Humans are never as cut and dried as wheat and weeds. Within each of us is the potential to produce desirable fruit as well as invasive plant, even within the course of a day. Thank God the Lord is merciful and forgiving!
Let us focus then on the good we can do so that God may let it increase and flourish like the mustard seed. —DM

TODAY AND THE LAST TWO SUNDAYS make up a Matthean story arc that begins and ends with parables about separating wheat from weeds and desirable fish from everything else caught from the sea. In between, we hear parables about mustard seeds, yeast, buried treasure, and pearls. Serving as prologue and epilogue are parables of the sower and the soil and the scribe and the storeroom.
Homilists and music directors would do well to approach these three Sundays collectively as a kind of miniseries within the long Summer Ordinary Time stretch to help their assemblies see the connections. One that emerges is the need for disciples in their
Hymnals
daily life to pray for and practice discernment, the discipline of being attentive to and acting upon the supernatural inspiration of the Holy Spirit in their works. Discernment begins with listening and being open to receiving God’s word. It results in being able to draw from both our rich tradition and the new ways the Spirit is acting today. Discernment is not about judging another’s worth but of recognizing what in one’s life leads to or away from God. Like buried treasure or tiny seed, that hidden path is not always readily seen but it is always present because of God’s love for us. And once we find it, we are to follow it with our whole lives. —DM
