To resolve the issue of sound proofing, panels of fabric in different sizes are added on the wall. These panels are sustainable from inside out, for not only are they made from eco-inteligent wool but their core are combined from constructional waste from the site (excess fabric, lumber waste). The hexagon shelving system has similar form and follows the movement of the panels, and together they make a clean and functional wall.
This outdoor working space provides different choices of working condition. The flapping counters on the reclaimed wood wall is ideal for people who enjoy working while standing. On the other hand, hammock and side bench provide comfortable seating for a casual attire. The space can be emptied out easily for BBQ party. The green wall pays its roll as both wall covering and back-pillow for the bench sitting area.
The lounge area feels fresher and breezier thanks to the greenery and bright materials’s color scheme. The bocce ball court makes this space the perfect entertainment area.
The REI Flagship Store REI x PAVE 2014 Design Competition Unknown location, Washington DC
The design is inspired by the salt flats in Bolivia. In dry season, salt shapes up into veins on the surface. The flat dries up during rainy season leaving salt behind and becomes a mirror that can be walked on. In this space where the sky meets earth, people unknowingly walk the not-straight line heading towards their destination. The message being sent through the new REI flag ship store is to take a few more steps -- to be out of each person’s comfort zone and to explore nature. In order to create a clean, bright, and sustainable image for the store, environmentally friendly materials and re-purposed objects are used substantially. The variety of finishes and in-store graphic will reflect the outdoor lifestyle that hold the essence of REI store.
The bubble diagram is created by the organic shapes of the salt veins. The main circulation is seen in the shape of a foot step, based on the design concept. Following the bubble diagram, the floor plan have a lot of interesting angles and customized fixtures. In addition, outdoor elements such as grass, water, rock, and snow are put in the space in order to give customer the real experience and also add a variety of natural texture and color into the space.

The design has a simple lighting layout that lines up with the angles in the floor plan. The most use fixture are the LED flood light that produces general luminance for the space. LED track lights are used as directional fixtures (circulation route), while pendants are used as focal point or task lighting. Back-lit light panel and LED strip light help enhance the ambiance of special props. Re-purposed objects are used to create interesting light effects throughout the store.
Different from original REI’s bike shop, this one doesn’t focus on having as many bikes as possible. Customers have enough space to both circulate and ride the bike. The idea of looking at the mirror surface is translated through the act of customers looking at the rotating images on the screens --looking at their future selves. This style wall will motivate the outdoor spirit and inspire customer to be in action. Customized display fixtures are made from pressed wood, a recycled materials, and to emphasize the sustainability of this store, lighting fixtures (wheel pendants) and partition (shipping container siding) are all re-purposed object.
Connected to the book area, this lounge serves as both community area and REI’s classroom. By having the flexible seating system, the space can be easily converted for a class session or small conversations. Pressed wood is also used for customized fixtures such as book shelves and tablet kiosk. Paper waste is highly limited thanks to the use of electronic information system. The space is lighten up by the huge customized pendant that has the cell textile that reflects the original inspiration. The overall color scheme feels cheerful and motivating with the pops of color on top of the neutral palette.
As one of the most important shops within REI, this camp area gives the real experience to the customers. The green wall and grass camp ground brings the outdoor inside and creates the great space for camping lessons. Being right next to a exterior window, this area is easily caught by walking-by people and raise the curiosity and intention to walk inside the store. Sustanable customed fixtures are made to increase ease of getting the product and also add storage space.
This climbing gear fixture is made from reclaimed wood and recycled glass top. The lower drawers are storage area, while the upper ones serves as sale zone.
This apparel fixture is made from bark, a green material. The products will be placed within eyes and touch level, while the wooden crate (re-purposed object) provides storage space. PRESSED WOOD use for display fixtures in camp and active sports division and as floor covering in apparel division CONCRETE use for floor covering for camp and active sports division SHIPPING CONTAINER SIDING use as wall treatment on non structure walls
This fixture is made from reclaimed wood planks. Products can be displayed in several ways following the flexible slat system.

Garden Unit The design is inspired by the bird nest, physically and mentally. The chaotic geometry of the nest is used in a less condense texture that make the space feel open and airy. The neutral color scheme helps releasing the stress from school and work for the client.
Lower Unit The concept is influenced by the client’s desire of “being less is more”. To reflect this value, clean-lined caseworks and furniture is used through out the space. On the other hand, a wide variety of texture is used to raise the flat surface and create a more solid look.
Upper Unit The design is inspired from the appeal of jungle when the sun is coming down. Different kind of fabrics are used to complement each other like different textured surface in the woods. Gold is used as an accent color to mimic the reflection of light at sunset’s time.
Floral Textile This textile project is inspired by lotus, the emblem flower of Vietnam. This collection will add a refreshing and relaxing feeling to any interior space.
