he starting point of this work is the aknowledgement of the essence of the area of Jackson Heights, which is the exact same condition of the whole megalopolis of New York City. In terms of urban tissue, the city is totally controlled by the grid, and Jackson Heights makes no exception at all. The grid defines the roads, and the roads are basically the car’s reign, a jungle where the pedestrian is forbidden, and the public space is almost absent, if not relegated to poor sidewalk. Neverstheless, Jackson Heights is kept alive by sidewalks, being this a strongly commercial area, especially along the Roosevelt Avenue. The main urban idea of the intervention deals with the shift of the urban primary cell, which as of now is to be identified with the Block, a self-enclosed entity that often embodies private space. This element grows instead and becomes the Megablock, a much wider element that is able to provide public space to the citizens and where the use of the car is limited. This new Megagrid defines the renewed traffic of the area: high speed roads flow at the limits of the megablocks, while low speed ones are the only accepted inside the new neighborhoods. Parking is to be found underground along the spinal column of the megablock. The two megablocks facing both the Roosevelt Avenue and the 82nd street are the architectural proposal is to be found. According to the needs of the megablocks, a continuous steel structure rises above the underground parking and runs for 800 meters, keeping the two megablocks tied. This new piece of urban landscape, parallel to Roosevelt Avenue, is governed by a 3x3x3 tridimentional grid which is totally permeable at the level of the city, where the current commercial spaces are to be found. As of now, this structure houses two types of elements: the first is a collection of housing and offices modules, strongly fixed inside the 3x3 structure. The second family of elements is represented by public pavillions whose shape collides with the rigidity of the grid. These pavillions host a sports centre, a theatre, a library and an exhibition space, and are exemples of inflatable architecture.

“Mat Building”, this term generated by a theory that binds design experiments and theoretical investigations around an idea of the most recognizable form for the internal connections between its parts and for the overall geometric figure that such parts tend to draw, the term originates from the concept of mat, or, in mathematics, a matrix. The study and analysis of the principles of organization of urban space according to the mat building criteria will be subject to possible applications and design experiments within the research project. In recent decades, the loss of value of the open space is evident, not only in the construction of large territorial figures, but especially in the definition of the smaller figures which
should instead compose the connection system of the urban fabric and as a result of a different principle of urbanity. This is the idea of Mat-Building, delineated by Alison Smithson in 1974, in an article entitled “How to Recognize and Read Mat - Building”, in which by means of traditional and modern examples Smithson described the trawling process calling: “Mat-building can be said to epitomize the anonymous collective; where the functions come to enrich the fabric and the individual gains new freedoms of action through a new shuffled order, based on interconnection, close knit pattern of association and possibilities for growth, diminution and change.”

T
he idea of - Roma 2025, New Life Cycles for the Metropolis - is inspired by the famous exhibition in 1978 “ROMA INTERROTTA”, which was attended by famous architect such as Colin Rowe, James Stirling, Aldo Rossi, Leon Krier, Paolo Portoghesi, Robert Venturi and many others. In that experience the context of reference was the city of Rome as represented in the Nolli Map in 1748 , used by the designers as the basis for an exploration project which was intended to reimagine Rome. Taking some of the suggestions of “ROMA INTERROTTA” and opening the investigation to the metropolitan area of Rome. ROMA 2025 involved 24 Italian and international Schools of Architecture to organize workshops and an exhibitions. Columbia University and I.U.A.V. designed a northern area of Rome, this area is characterized by a strong infrastructure , a ring around the city called GRA, and by a orography system called Forre. The project involves the grafting of devices that re - activate the potential of the place, through the centers of production of energy through solar panels. Furthermore, the energy is generated through the recycling of waste and accumulated in the production cluster , so as to solve a serious problem for the city as the waste. The project is presented as a Manifesto for the city of the future , it covers topics such as recycling and the production of alternative energy , which is close to the architectural world but relate much more closely the population of cities. For the exhibition held at MAXXI in January 2016, the project it was conceived and designed as a manifesto of a new possible scenario for the city of the future.

“The desire to trasform space in a real thing; void becames the raw material of architecture!� with these words Byrne explains the architectural concept of Manuel Aires Mateus. In this workshop the visiting professor talking about space and matter: the idea of house divided into living, relaxing, sharing and eating spaces. The house is designed as a large stock of matter, a huge monolith in which the spaces of the house are dug, such as inside a cave; in reference to work of Eduardo Chillida in Monte Tindaya. The spaces develop vertically, these are connected by a plastic and helical staircase runs through the 50 meters of the tower height, in this case the clear reference is to San Marco Tower-bell in Venice. The proportions between the base area and the height is 1/6 , basic rule even for the Venetian bell towers.
