A Dark Place of Dreams: Louise Nevelson with Chakaia Booker, Lauren Fensterstock, and Kate Gilmore SEPTEMBER 28 – JANUARY 6 Galleries 8 & 9 MEMBER PREVIEW THURSDAY, SEPT 27 6PM Fellows Preview | 7PM All Members

Celebrating the achievements of women artists, A Dark Place of Dreams features pioneering American sculptor, Louise Nevelson (1899–1988) and demonstrates the impact she has had on three diverse, highly-acclaimed, next-generation artists: Chakaia Booker, Lauren Fensterstock, and Kate Gilmore. Born in Kiev, Russia (present-day Ukraine), of Jewish descent, Nevelson and her family immigrated to the United States to escape religious persecution. In the 1930s, she broke into the male-dominated New York art scene, and with extraordinary talent and sheer determination, emerged as a force in American sculpture that has had lasting impact. A Dark Place of Dreams is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, a cultural institute of the University of North Florida.

Charleston Collects: South Asian Art OCTOBER 26 – FEBRUARY 17 | Galleries 2 & 3

Debuting the Charleston Collects series, this exhibition features selections from a major private collection of South Asian art in Charleston. India, the birthplace of three major world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, and a country where Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have deep roots, has traditions of sculpture, painting, and architecture that stretch back thousands of years. This rich and varied visual culture is reflected in the naturalism of Western influenced Buddhist sculpture from ancient Gandhara, and in the bold Matisse-like stylization of Indian painting in the 16th and 17th centuries illustrating Hindu subjects. From examples of early medieval Buddhist bronze to paintings by artists from the courts of the Muslim Mughal emperors, this collection represents the region’s diverse sources and tradition.
