Building a Legacy: The Vibrant Vision Collection of Jonathan Green and Richard Weedman THURSDAY, AUGUST 20 | Fellows Preview 4–5:30PM Harleston, Smith, and Director’s Circle 5:30–6:30PM Hutty FRIDAY, AUGUST 21 | Members Preview 9–11AM All Members Over the past forty years, acclaimed artist Jonathan Green and his partner and studio director, Richard Weedman, have amassed an astonishing collection of paintings, sculpture, and works on paper. Building a Legacy presents a selection of forty-nine works of art from this significant collection, offering a rare glimpse at the couple’s aesthetic interests and the artistic inspiration behind Green’s own artwork. Themes of labor, love, belonging, and spirituality exude through works that portray tender moments between a parent and child, struggles for racial equality, pride in ancestral heritage, and strength derived through personal faith. Embracing a Pan American approach to include art and artists of African, Caribbean, and Latin American descent—the collection provides a broader look at our nation’s history and explores what it means to be American today. Highlights include works by Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Charles White, David Driskell, Sam Gilliam, Rogelio Cobas, Reynier Llanes, and Jonathan Green.
Virtual Tour with Jonathan Green | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 | 2:30PM Artist and collector Jonathan Green will lead a live virtual tour of Building a Legacy.

Charleston Collects: Devotion and Fantasy, Witchcraft and the World’s End THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8 | Fellows Preview 4–5:30PM Harleston, Smith, and Director’s Circle 5:30–6:30PM Hutty FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9 | Members Preview 9–11AM All Members This exhibition of Northern Renaissance paintings and prints, from a major private Charleston collection, introduces a world of intensely, and sometimes disturbingly, vivid imagery. Created in the European Lowcountries and Germany between 1440 and 1590, this is a world of contradictions and unease—whether the subject is a troubled Virgin Mary contemplating her young son, or a menacing group of malevolent figures inspired by Hieronymus Bosch, or Albrecht Dürer’s famous scenes from Revelations. In the turbulent era of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Reformation in Northern Europe, viewers found their hopes, desires, and anxieties mirrored in images like these inspiring pious belief or depicting fantastic visions of good and evil.
Virtual Lecture with Dr. Lawrence Goedde | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9 | 1PM Join guest curator of Charleston Collects: Devotion and Fantasy, Witchcraft and the World’s End, Lawrence Goedde, Ph.D., professor of art history, University of Virginia for an introduction to these masterpieces of the Northern Renaissance. $20 Members | $30 Non-Members | $10 Students/Faculty with Valid ID

KATHERINE DUNLAP
Katherine Dunlap creates paintings that exist in a realm between truth and memory, creating a visual recollection of a place that doesn't necessarily exist but represents an idealized memory. By referencing old family photos, Dunlap hopes to connect her family's past experiences and be reminded of the ordinary, memorable moments. OCTOBER 26, 2020 – NOVEMBER 22, 2020

ANDREA HAZEL
Born in Charleston, Andrea Hazel creates watercolors depicting scenes of homes and communities that have been demolished and displaced in the wake of Charleston’s rapid growth and development. “The idea was not to point a finger and blame, but to show what happened, and to remember these places,” she has said.

GINA IACOVELLI
In a world obsessed with digitizing memories, Charleston-based artist Gina Iacovelli has been manning a quiet revolution, reintroducing tangible keepsakes through her bespoke jewelry line Mementos Entwined. Inspired by the sentimental and mourning jewelry of the 18th and 19th centuries, lacovelli began studying the nearly-lost art of tablebraiding hair into jewelry.
