Our ground floor is quickly becoming a place for members, friends, and visitors to congregate and watch creativity in action— whether through a retail experience in our museum store, a hands-on activity in our classrooms, a studio demonstration by one of our visiting artists, or a scheduled event, film, or concert in our reception and lecture halls. The grandeur of our second and third floor galleries provides the perfect environment to immerse ourselves in art and to celebrate its beauty, craft, process, and detail. Our permanent collection galleries orient our audiences to the story of American art that touches Charleston, while our special exhibition galleries bring the world to our door step. Each day our eyes are opened to the possibilities that our glorious spaces offer and how we are redefining the word “museum” from a place of passive reflection to a place of lively engagement. We ask questions, provide historical context, foster empathy and inclusion, and nourish minds and souls. All of this happens under our dome in the center of our historic city. Yet our reach crosses all boundaries because we fuel the imagination. This is what you, our members and donors, have accomplished. Your patience, steadfastness, tenacity, and incredible generosity have turned our collective dream into reality, and while there will be many challenges ahead for us, our resolve is greater than ever that through art we can create a more compassionate, understanding world and enhance lives for the better. This is our mission for the future and because of you we are ready to meet it!
What a year this has been! And to stick with the Lerner & Loewe vibe: it is indeed, almost like being in love! I want to thank all of you who worked so hard and demonstrated your love for art, and for the Gibbes, by supporting the reinvention of our Museum. Museums are important to the life and vitality of a community and they belong to everyone. Art encourages us to see the world through the eyes of others; it challenges our perspective; it broadens our view. These are the reasons—art is the reason—that we came together to provide an appropriate space for programs that have the power to change lives. Thank you to the many organizations and businesses which provided venues while the Museum was closed. And thank you to our Board, the Women’s Council, Society 1858, and our fabulous staff for creating stellar programming in these offsite venues. It isn’t easy to maintain excitement, engagement, and momentum when your location is “closed”. As many of you know, our building is owned jointly with the City of Charleston. This partnership was extremely important as we pursued the renewal of our grand Beaux Arts building. We were encouraged and supported first by Mayor Joe Riley and then by Mayor John Tecklenburg, as well as City Council, in our efforts to give Charleston the art museum that a great city deserves. We are so pleased to have such dedicated partners. I leave you with a few statistics of which to be proud. As of October 1, we have raised $13.2M toward a $13.5M goal. Over 575 gifts were made in support of the project. The staff supervised the entire collection of 10,000+ objects. During the period the Museum was closed, we held over 200 programs at 10+ different venues. Since we reopened, our attendance is up by 113%. Our event business is booming— with more than 30 private events currently booked and multiple inquiries daily. Thank you for sharing in this transformation. I encourage you to stop by to see our amazing collection or a special exhibition on view; attend a lecture or curator-led tour on a Wednesday evening; or relax in the beautiful and serene setting of the Lenhardt Garden. I truly promise you won’t be disappointed!
My heartfelt thanks for believing in the Gibbes.

AY 28, 2016, was a spectacular day for the Gibbes Museum of Art. Board members, staff, patrons, municipal leaders, students and visitors helped celebrate the reopening of Charleston’s signature Museum, the oldest museum building in the South. The energy was palpable as all waited to reopen the front doors after a nineteen-month renovation. Since 2011, the generosity of more than 575 supporters, including individuals, foundations, and municipalities, has helped the Gibbes to raise $13.2M towards a goal of $13.5M. We are proud of the efforts of those who have helped us to achieve this milestone, and we look forward to working with those who will help us to complete the Gibbes Campaign for Excellence by the end of 2016.

ALLAN ANDERSON, 2016 JAMES SHOOLBRED PHILANTHROPY AWARD RECIPIENT, WITH EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ANGELA MACK Š MCG Photography
James Shoolbred Gibbes Philanthropy Award ALLAN ANDERSON The James Shoolbred Gibbes Philanthropy Award honors its namesake for his generous donation of $100,000 made to the City of Charleston for the purpose of erecting an art museum. Gibbes was a great lover of art, and this philanthropy award recognizes individuals who embody these same principles. In this reopening year of the Gibbes Museum of Art, it is only fitting that we recognized Allan J. Anderson as the 2016 recipient. The award was presented at the Gibbes Annual Fellows Luncheon on May 27, 2016 when we welcomed 300+ guests in the Lenhardt Garden. Like Gibbes, Allan Anderson has been a true champion of the arts. Not only did he help launch the Campaign for Excellence to help raise funds for a much-needed restoration of the current Beaux Arts building, he never wavered in his belief that Executive Director Angela Mack, staff, and the entire board of directors could successfully raise $13.5M to accomplish this task. Allan served as Board Chair from July 2011 – June 2013 and then on the Capital Campaign Committee through 2016. Allan rarely misses a committee meeting of any kind except when he is traveling to the Midwest to visit his beloved Wabash College. Allan is often accompanied by his wonderful wife Jane to many Gibbes programs and events. Day after day, Allan bestows a spirit of generosity and mid-western optimism that has been much appreciated by Gibbes staff and fellow peers.

DURING OUR FINAL YEAR OF RENOVATIONS, ALL EYES WERE FOCUSED ON THE PRIZE OF THE NEW MUSEUM. We watched excitedly as classrooms, studios, and lecture spaces took shape on the first floor and imagined all of the programs we would be able to offer under our own roof when the building reopened. But dreaming about the future didn’t slow down the Gibbes staff and volunteer committee members from rolling out numerous programs and events during FY16. We are grateful to our friends at neighboring institutions including the Charleston Library Society, Circular Congregational Church, The Charleston Marriott, The Vendue, and Garden & Gun (in the historic Cigar Factory), for hosting us while we were without a home. Over 100 programs and events took place during the year—including our fabulous Street Party, Art of Design Luncheon, 1858 Winter Party, and Distinguished Lecture Series—keeping art at the forefront of our community and helping to raise over $273K to support the Museum’s educational and exhibition programming.

Exhibitions SPRING 2016
THE MUSEUM’S INAUGURAL SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS opened to the public on May 28 to rave reviews. Beyond Catfish Row: The Art of Porgy and Bess celebrated George Gershwin’s famed opera, as interpreted by visual artists from the 1930s and the present. The Things We Carry: Contemporary Art in the South featured paintings, sculpture, photography, and mixed media works by a diverse group of contemporary artists. Organized in response to the tragic shooting of nine parishioners at Emanuel AME Church, The Things We Carry addressed the troubled history of the American South and the many ways contemporary artists represent that history.

The Gibbes Distinguished Lecture Series is the result of the
passion and vision of one of the Museum’s board members, philanthropist Esther Ferguson. Inspired by her experiences as a young woman from South Carolina living in New York City, Mrs. Ferguson wanted to bring to Charleston world-renowned artists, art collectors, museum leaders, philanthropists, and art historians to stimulate public discussion about creativity and the visual arts. The series draws national attention to the Gibbes and Charleston through its stellar group of cultural leaders. The first lecture in 2010 featured contemporary artist Christo, whose recent project, Floating Piers, attracted over one million visitors during its two-week run in Lake Iseo, Italy this summer. The Distinguished Lecture series was formalized in 2013 and has included cosmetic tycoon and philanthropist Leonard Lauder; renowned architects Billie Tsien and Tod Williams; and Philippe de Montebello, the longest serving director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Most recently, we were honored to welcome the legendary contemporary American artist Jeff Koons as the 2016 Distinguished Lecture Series Speaker on November 16 to a record crowd. Jeff Koons is known worldwide for pioneering new approaches to the readymade and elevating everyday objects to an intellectual level, such as his iconic Balloon Dog (1994–2000) and Split Rocker (2000). Koons’s work has been shown throughout the world and was the subject of a major 2014/15 exhibition organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, Jeff Koons: A Retrospective, which traveled to the Centre Pompidou Paris and Guggenheim Bilbao. One of the most prominent artists working today, his artwork has brought record-setting prices at auction, including the world-record auction price for a living artist.

Noted Charleston artists such as Alfred Hutty and William Halsey worked and taught classes in the studios that line the promenade. The recent renovation has restored the studio spaces, and we now have the pleasure of inviting artists for short and long-term residencies at the Museum. Visiting artists keep open-studio hours and provide demonstrations, workshops, and master classes for the public. The Museum will host 6–8 contemporary artists annually.

Education
“A field trip to an art museum can improve information recall, critical thinking skills, appreciation of history, and tolerance toward others.” —GREENE, KISIDA, & BOWEN, 2014 (COURTESY OF EDUTOPIA)
The PreK–12th grade education initiative incorporates in-school programs as well as museum-based programming. Art to Go, Eye Spy and Eye Opener are longstanding in-school programs that place Gibbes museum educators and/or teaching artists into school classrooms. Each program has its own individual goals but all of these programs share the commonality that the more museum quality art experiences the Gibbes provides our local students, the more well rounded they become. Museumbased programming includes Art Access,
tours, classes, and workshops for all ages as well as the Junior Docent program. All programs are taught by a team of dedicated educators. The Museum has implemented a number of newly redesigned tours on a variety of themes including South Carolina history, art of exploration, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) that uses artwork to explain mathematical and scientific processes. In addition to the classrooms on the ground floor, the Gibbes also offers a new Visiting Artist program providing contemporary artists studio space which allows students the opportunity to interact with working artists.
FREE MUSEUM ADMISSION FOR T ITLE I SCHOOLS
In 2016–17, we will strive to reach more than 15,000 students in the tri-county area through arts education outreach. Gibbes programs promote working together to achieve a common goal, sharpening problem-solving skills, improving school attendance, and encouraging positive behavior. With new facility spaces and programs and extraordinary exhibitions, we believe that we can continue to offer an ideal setting for inquiry-based learning and a center for creativity.

THE REOPENING of the renovated Gibbes Museum of Art ushers in a new era not only for the Gibbes, but also for the entire arts community in Charleston. The transformation has revealed the grandeur of the original 1905 building and has allowed for the creation of an Education Center on the ground floor that permits the Museum to return to its original academy-style approach to learning through four new studio and classroom spaces and a flexible lecture hall space for large and small audiences. Now students and adults have the opportunity to enhance their museum experience through hands-on classes and programming.

Education by the Numbers 2015–16
Art is the Reason
Looking Forward 2015–16 WAS DEFINITELY A YEAR OF ANTICIPATION AND PLANNING FOR THE GIBBES. Behind the scenes, the staff and board, began to meet regularly to discuss a ten year strategic plan for the new Museum. Over the past year and under the leadership of strategic planning committee chair David Cohen and consultant Dianne Culhane, former member of The Coca-Cola Company’s top leadership team, the Gibbes Board and staff have participated in interactive forums, workshops, and strategy meetings. Looking forward, this will be an exciting year as we complete the strategic plan and present it to our Gibbes community. This plan will provide a strategy for growth from the present through 2026.
“In Charleston, we believe art is the difference between merely existing and being truly alive… Art is the Reason.” — T H E G I B B E S M U S E U M
The Redesigned Website
Media Relations
W W W.G I B B E S M U S E U M .O RG As part of our rebranding, in April 2016 the Gibbes unveiled our newly renovated website. Lasley Steever, Director of Programs & Digital Engagement, along with Rebuilding Committee Chair and Board member Ras Smith, spear-headed the effort with the talented web designers, copywriters, and brand experts at Blue Ion Collab. The end result is truly a work of art featuring the new Gibbes logo crafted by Gil Shuler Graphic Design. From rich visuals of exhibitions to timely information about upcoming events to in-depth membership details to a powerful manifesto, there is plenty to keep visitors engaged. The design is fresh and functional, clean and contemporary, targeted and timeless. We continue to seek ways to support the cost of the new website and seek funding for new online capabilities. Let us know if you want to play a role in helping us meet our digital initiatives.
In October 2015, the Gibbes Museum of Art partnered with Lou Hammond Group, an integrated marketing communications firm with offices in New York, Charleston, Miami, and Los Angeles to create a media relations strategy for the reopening. For 32 years they have been the leader in marketing and PR for leaders such as Destinations, Food & Wine, and Hospitality and Lifestyle. This partnership continues to be invaluable as we work to build awareness of our many Gibbes exhibitions, programs, and special events.

Acquisitions 2015–2016 AS RENOVATIONS WERE UNDERWAY LAST YEAR the Gibbes continued to selectively add new works to its permanent collection through gift and purchase. Notably the Museum received six works by gift including a powerful sculptural assemblage by contemporary artist Lonnie Holley gifted by Deborah Chalsty; and two watercolor paintings by Mary Whyte, Acorn given by Dr. Anton and Caroline Vreede, and Mary Jackson given by Cathy and Ben Marino. The Museum purchased its first allegorical painting by the venerable Benjamin West, Musidora and her Two Companions, Sacharissa and Amoret, at their Bath Espied by Damon inspired by a passage from James Thomson’s popular eighteenth-century poem The Seasons. The recent addition of nearly 3500 square feet of exhibition space has allowed the Museum to increase the percentage of its collection on view from 3% to nearly 6%. As always, the Museum is grateful to the numerous donors and collectors who make possible the continued growth of the permanent collection.
