the Gibbes Manifesto The Gibbes Museum of Art is home to the foremost collection of American art that incorporates the story of Charleston. The Museum connects the city and region’s artistic past to a vibrant contemporary art scene. This is what we believe.

Art is the reason. A bustling seaport in the 1700s, Charleston was a melting pot of cultures, religions, and traditions. Powered by the rice and indigo trade, and slavery, it was the fourth largest city in America in 1790—and the wealthiest. Like Philadelphia, Boston, and New York, what distinguished Charleston then— was art. While we were home to some of America’s earliest art, collectors, artists, who made the City both muse and subject—and taken our turn as one of the nation’s richest cities—in money and culture—so were we also home to America’s original sin, slavery—and a war that divided our nation. In 1888, when Charleston was financially and culturally on its knees, benefactor James Gibbes left a bequest to the City to build an art museum. When the Gibbes Museum opened in 1905, the nation celebrated what Charleston has always understood: the power of art—to inspire our

imagination, heal our hurt, revel in our experience, rebuild what’s broken, nourish our souls, and release all that holds us back. Through our complicated history, through light and shadow, we have persevered—humanity intact.

Art is the reason Charleston will endure. In Charleston, we believe art is the difference between merely existing and being truly alive. That’s why we immerse ourselves in every part of it—from fine art to craft—from nurturing its creation and celebrating its multicultural presentation—to inviting its interpretation and ensuring its preservation. Because when we open ourselves to art, we open ourselves to the world—to people and ideas, to beauty, craft, process and detail, to different cultures, to pain and pleasure, to questions, expression and emotion, to truth and transcendence. In the presence of art, we have the opportunity to see inside someone’s heart, mind, and soul and feel what they felt. That understanding and compassion make us more understanding, compassionate people, who, in turn, create a more compassionate, understanding world.

That is art’s gift.

Art is the Reason. This statement begins the Gibbes Manifesto set forth on the previous page, and I ask you to consider the power of those words. The Manifesto articulates why “we believe art is the difference between merely existing and being truly alive…Because when we open ourselves to art, we open ourselves to the world [and] in the presence of art, we have the opportunity to see inside someone’s heart, mind, and soul and feel what they felt. That understanding and compassion make us more understanding, compassionate people, who, in turn, create a more compassionate, understanding world.” This past year was a phenomenal success for the Gibbes after reopening from a two-year closure and renovation. With a new facility, new programming, and a new business model, so much lay at stake for our institution in its first full year of operations. Through the deep commitment and dedication of a hands-on Board of Directors and staff, the 2016–2017 year was like no other. The Gibbes demonstrated its ability to serve as a leader in the way that visitors experience art, through transformational and intellectually complex exhibitions such as Realm of the Spirit: The Solomon R. Guggenheim Collection and the Gibbes Museum of Art to History, Life, Labor: The Prints of Jacob Lawrence to Artist, Scientist, Explorer: Mark Catesby in the Carolinas. The Gibbes continually redefined the word “museum” from a place of passive reflection to a place of lively engagement and turned the creative process “inside out” from the traditional museum experience. We brought to Charleston the incomparable Jeff Koons, who shared his pioneering approaches to elevating everyday objects to an intellectual level and the amazing Patrick Dougherty, who created a community wide, site specific sculpture in the Museum. In the coming pages, you will see the many achievements of the Gibbes since reopening. Throughout this annual report, you will find quotes from key constituents describing the Gibbes with words such as “amazing,” “special,” and “a national treasure!” We all look forward to what is to come because in everything that the Gibbes undertakes, Art is the Reason. Stay tuned!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ANGELA D. MACK During this year of operation, the Gibbes Museum facility restoration received accolades from all sectors including the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, the Preservation Society of Charleston, and Historic Charleston Foundation. We welcomed 60,000 visitors, 6,000 students, and doubled our membership by providing 100+ educational opportunities through exhibitions, programs, and performances. A 2017 Economic Impact Study found that the Gibbes is “a driving force in the Charleston community.” The Museum’s ability to push the economy in a positive direction is proven by the study’s calculated $120 million impact through the visitors it attracts and the jobs it creates. This is a tremendous conclusion for our 112-year-old facility that is recognized as the oldest museum building in the South. But this is just the beginning! With the New Year we will embark on a new and exciting chapter for the Museum. Two years in the making by the Gibbes Board under the direction of the Strategic Planning Committee, the carefully thought out 10-Year Strategic Plan (2018–2028) entitled Art is the Reason will dramatically further our mission to enhance lives through art. The goals are to refine the quality of the collection and heighten the significance of our exhibitions; deliver a museum experience that nurtures understanding from artistic conception to completed object; achieve recognition as the hub for the creative arts that drives economic development; make the Gibbes inviting and accessible to all; and ensure stability and growth through robust business and development models. The 10-Year Strategic Plan sets forth strategies and measurable outcomes for achieving our goals. These include presenting exhibitions and programs of the highest quality that are transformative and intellectually stimulating and relate to four specific themes: (i) conservation and the environment (ii) social justice (iii) health and wellness and (iv) innovation. These themes along with creating an unexpected museum experience and promoting STEAM pre-K through 12th grade curriculums will govern the efforts of the Gibbes going forward. Because of you, our loyal members and donors, we are poised to make a significant difference in the lives of our residents and visitors and provide a legacy for the many generations who will step through the doors of the Gibbes and be transformed. Thank you for believing in art and the Gibbes!

Acquisitions

The Gibbes new visible Collections Storage Center experienced a tremendous amount of activity this past year. After many months of packing, moving, unpacking, and installing the collection for the renovation, in FY17 the Collections staff was finally able to spend time overseeing duties related to the art storage center. Projects included a full inventory and location updates of all artwork in the Museum’s permanent collection, the relocation of the miniature portrait and cased photography collections to new storage units, the design and fabrication of an additional storage system for oversize works of art, the planning for more efficient use of space on art racks, and the organization and movement of all packing, shipping, and exhibition supplies to loading dock storage.

As always, the Museum is grateful to the numerous donors and collectors who make possible the continued growth of the permanent collection. Notably the Museum received fourteen works by gift including a powerful batik painting by Dr. Leo Twiggs created after the tragic shooting at the Emanuel A.M.E. Church in 2015, given by Kay and John Bachmann; two 18th century miniature portraits given by James Wilson in honor of Mary M.B. Wilson; and five works including a South Carolina photograph by Diane Arbus given by Joy Craft, from the Craft Collection. The Museum also purchased three works: a significant neoclassical sculpture, Mending the Nets, by Chauncey Ives with funds provided by the William B. McGuire Family Foundation; its first major work by contemporary American photographer Sally Mann; and a new work by burgeoning South Carolina artist Charles Williams.

In addition to regular behind-the-scenes activity related to collection and exhibition management, Zinnia Willits, Director of Collections, and her staff welcomed many groups to the Collections Storage Center and provided information about where and how art lives when not on exhibit. These tours (both public and private) turn the Museum inside out and allow attendees to consider a museum’s purpose to protect and preserve collections in perpetuity. Groups who visited art storage included Gibbes art campers (all ages), Citadel cadets, College of Charleston art classes, Charleston County art teachers, auxiliary groups and collections staff from museums across the Southeast, and many Gibbes Board members and friends. In addition, Zinnia continued to provide public tours of art storage on the first Wednesday of each month.

Society 1858’s Winter Party, Graffiti in the Garden, was a sell-out success with over 400 guests in attendance. The event featured internationally-acclaimed muralist Odeith, who created a trompe l’oeil “Charleston Strong” mural in the Lenhardt Garden honoring the victims and survivors of Mother Emanuel AME Church. Partygoers danced the night away to the musical stylings of DJ Wolf and bid over $7,000 to take home original works of art by Charleston’s hottest artists. Overall, the young patrons auxiliary group raised over $35,000 through this and other events over the course of the year to support the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art.

Society 1858 named Alicia Henry of Nashville, TN, the 2016 winner of the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art. Henry’s artistic practice includes painting, textile, and mixed-media installation work that explores social relationships through depictions of the human figure. An associate professor of art at Fisk University, Henry’s artistic goal is to represent a broader vision of society to make visible what often goes unseen. Henry accepted the Prize at the Amy P. Coy Forum and Prize Celebration in September 2016, which brings together artists and art historians for a conversation about the impact of contemporary art in the South.

FOUNDED IN MARCH 1950, the Women’s Council of the Gibbes Museum of Art serves as a vital support system of the Museum. The annual Art of Design Luncheon and Lecture is the Women’s Council’s signature annual event featuring internationally renowned experts in the world of design. The Women’s Council has raised over $450,000 since 2011 in support of the Museum’s exhibition and educational programming, plus a gift to the capital campaign to name the Museum Store. In addition to its annual Art of Design fundraiser, the Women’s Council organizes numerous educational programs and social gatherings for members and their guests.

Since 2010, the Gibbes Museum has hosted a one night only, fabulous party under the stars on Meeting Street. Gibbes on the Street featuring Charleston’s top chefs with delicious bites in addition to music, dancing, and an open bar has become one of Charleston’s most sought-after tickets. Due to inclement weather in 2017, the party took place in the glorious Lenhardt Garden and Almeida Reception Hall at the Gibbes. Six hundred guests attended the event and enjoyed delectable dishes while dancing the night away to the intoxicating musical rhythms. Despite the location change, guests had a wonderful evening and the event continues to get better and better each year. Through the Gibbes on the Street, the Museum has raised over $575,000 in support of our exhibition and educational programming.

James Shoolbred Gibbes Philanthropy 2017 Award L A U R A G AT E S Each year the Board and staff of the Gibbes bestow the James Shoolbred Gibbes Philanthropy Award to an individual, group, or business. James Gibbes was deeply devoted to the betterment of Charleston’s young creative minds in the aftermath of Reconstruction. Through his 1888 bequest of $100,000, which in today’s dollars is valued at $2.5M, the City of Charleston and the Carolina Art Association launched what we know today as the Gibbes Museum of Art. His generosity and vision set the stage for the visual arts in Charleston by providing funds to erect the first art museum building in the South. In May of 2017, we honored Laura Gates with the James Shoolbred Gibbes Philanthropy Award. Laura, a strong advocate of nonprofits, has devoted her life to the causes that she holds most dear. A midwesterner by birth, Laura traveled east for college and graduate school where she met her late husband Steve, who sadly passed away this past summer. Life together took them to London, Houston, and Chicago to live and work, but eventually, Laura and Steve found their way to the Holy City and the Gibbes. She joined the Gibbes Board of Directors in 2003 and was appointed interim executive director for a year in 2005. She resumed her service on the Board as treasurer, second vice-president, and then first vice-president until her election as chair in 2014, right at the start of the Gibbes renovation. Laura and Steve were one of the first to make a naming opportunity gift to the Capital Campaign. Laura’s business acumen and organizational skills have helped to steer the Gibbes and other organizations in the community toward better accountability and fiscal responsibility. She believes strongly that the arts are fundamental to the strength of a community. In addition to her service to the Gibbes and other local nonprofits, Laura has also served as Board chair since 2012 for her beloved Wellesley College. Laura truly embodies the “spirit of generosity” and dedication exemplified by James Gibbes.

Gibbes Fellows Gibbes Museum Fellows and Director Circle members share a deep appreciation for the arts. Fellows level membership provides art enthusiasts with special opportunities for exclusive programs and events, amazing travel opportunities, and access to private collections. Some highlights of 2017 included an Afternoon Excursion to Auldbrass Plantation as part of the Gibbes blockbuster exhibition Realm of the Spirit: Solomon R. Guggenheim Collection and the Gibbes Museum of Art; a special preview celebration of the exhibition Painting a Nation: Hudson River School Landscapes from the Higdon Collection; a Church Street Art and Architecture Tour featuring four stunning residential homes; a wonderful evening rediscovering Charleston Renaissance artists at the newly restored Alfred Hutty home and studio; and the not-to-be-missed annual Fellows and Director Circle Luncheon in the stunning Lenhardt Garden at the Gibbes.

tycoon and philanthropist Leonard Lauder; renowned architects Billie Tsien and Tod Williams; and Philippe de Montebello, the longest serving director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Gibbes Distinguished Lecture Series is the result of the passion and vision of one of the Museum’s former board members, philanthropist Esther Ferguson. Inspired by her experiences as a young woman from South Carolina living in New York City, Mrs. Ferguson wanted to bring to Charleston world-renowned artists, art collectors, museum leaders, philanthropists, and art historians to stimulate public discussion about creativity and the visual arts. The series draws national attention to the Gibbes and Charleston through its stellar group of cultural leaders. The first lecture in 2010 featured contemporary artist Christo, whose recent project, Floating Piers, attracted over one million visitors during its two-week run in Lake Iseo, Italy this summer. The Distinguished Lecture Series was formalized in 2013 and has included cosmetic

Most recently, we were honored to welcome the legendary contemporary American artist Jeff Koons as the 2016 Distinguished Lecture Series Speaker with a record 700 attendees at the Charleston Music Hall. Koons is known worldwide for pioneering new approaches to the readymade and elevating everyday objects to an intellectual level, such as his iconic Balloon Dog (1994–2000) and Split Rocker (2000). Koons’s work has been shown throughout the world and was the subject of a major 2014/15 exhibition organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, Jeff Koons: A Retrospective, which traveled to the Centre Pompidou Paris and Guggenheim Bilbao. One of the most prominent artists working today, his artwork has brought record-setting prices at auction, including the world-record auction price for a living artist.

VISITING ARTIST SERIES

Betwixt and Between I N S TA L L AT I O N B Y PAT R I C K D O U G H E R T Y In March, the Gibbes welcomed sculptor Patrick Dougherty for a three-week residency to create the site-specific installation Betwixt and Between. The woven stick sculptural piece was the result of a large-scale community effort that involved volunteers to collect materials, prepare them for display, and weave the sculpture in the Museum’s atrium.

Visiting Artist Series The 2016–17 inaugural year of the Gibbes Visiting Artist program was a wonderful success. The roster of participants included a wide array of contemporary artists such as mixed-media artist Stacy Lynn Waddell, an 1858 Prize finalist whose visit coincided with the exhibition The Things We Carry where several of her works were displayed. A partnership with the College of Charleston allowed for a nine-month residency with adjunct professor and artist Crowell A. Pate, IV, an Alabama-born multi-disciplinary artist with a primary focus in sculptural work. In winter 2017, world-renowned sculptor Thomas Schomberg lectured at the Gibbes and the College of Charleston about the artist’s role in society today and the importance of public art. Conservator Amy Abbe also visited the Gibbes during the winter and worked on several marble sculptures in the Gibbes permanent collection. Abbe trained and worked as a sculpture and objects conservator for more than 15 years in museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, and the American Museum of Natural History. One of the highlights of the past year was the site-specific installation entitled Betwixt and Between, created by artist Patrick Dougherty for the VISITING ARTIST SERIES [ 8 ]

Gibbes atrium on the second and third floors. During his threeweek residency Dougherty worked with staff and volunteers to collect and prepare materials, and install three spires of twisted branches and saplings inspired by Charleston’s soaring steeples. The year closed with a two-week residency by artist Charles Williams, whose recent works draw inspiration from historical photography of the Civil Rights movement, and through the use of color and gesture offer a contemporary response to social and political issues of the past and present. Museum visitors enjoyed the opportunity to engage with the artists and learn about their inspiration, experience, process, and techniques. Opportunity for South Carolina Artists: Artists who currently reside in South Carolina are invited to apply for a four to six week Gibbes Visiting Artist session by submitting a proposal to connect the Gibbes collection or special exhibitions on view with their work. “As a Museum Educator, my biggest thrill is to have a person respond to a work of art and make a connection through that art to something else. Either in the Museum or on a smart board in a classroom, I’ve seen students and adults respond to our art with new insights. ART INSTRUCTION IN THE SCHOOL CLASSROOM

FREE MUSEUM ADMISSION FOR T ITLE I SCHOOLS

Education Outreach In an effort to provide all students access to important and necessary visual arts opportunities, the Gibbes offers a two-pronged approach to students in tri-county Title I schools. Through ART ACCESS , all Title I students in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties visit the Museum at no cost to the students or their schools. Through a second program called ART TO GO, Gibbes professional teaching artists go out to the tri-county, Title I schools offering a collaborative, year-long program where students learn about visual art techniques, the fundamentals of art history, and the Gibbes collection, all while working together as a group to create a collaborative community project. Each program offers students the opportunity to visit the Gibbes and participate in hands-on activities and Museum tours. Funding for these programs subsidizes admission fees, all transportation costs to the Gibbes, museum educator and visiting artist stipends, transportation of school projects to community exhibition space, necessary supplies, and professional development for teachers. Students also receive exposure to living artists through the Gibbes Visiting Artist program. Through these integral education initiatives the Gibbes welcomes thousands of students each year.

Visitor Enrichment Committee The Visitor Enrichment Committee brainstormed and raised funds for multiple projects on the first floor. Drawing with Friends, Join the Conversation, and Magneato are all free, engaging activities where visitors can react to and reflect on their Gibbes experience. Guests can also check out an activity backpack that includes a sketch book, colored pencils, a story book, and action cards for children.

The Daniel West Fraser Scholarship Fund Established by the family and friends of Daniel West Fraser, son of artist West Fraser, to honor his memory, The Daniel West Fraser Scholarship Fund serves to fulfill the Gibbes commitment to provide scholarship funding for art camps and classes to deserving, talented students from Title I and low income area schools who are recommended by their teachers. The goal of the Gibbes is to provide scholarships for 10% of the students who attend art camps and classes. The Daniel West Fraser Fund provides for half of the annual scholarships, while the other half is the result of an ongoing scholarship campaign to raise at least $3,000 annually to serve a total of 15–20 students each year. During 2016–2017, ten students benefited from the Daniel West Fraser Scholarship fund. These students attended classes during the school year, as well as our summer camp, and new teen summer camp.

Economic Impact Report Overview More than one year after reopening to the public after a two-year, $17 MILLION RENOVATION, the Gibbes Museum of Art announced the results of a study that reveals the museum’s economic impact on the Charleston tri-county area. Produced by The Citadel School of Business Administration, the study found that the GIBBES GENERATES AN IMPACT OF $120 MILLION ON THE CHARLESTON ECONOMY. There are two major sources of this impact: the expenditures of the Museum as defined in its annual budget and the spending of the patrons it attracts on ancillary items in the time before and after their visit to the Museum. Together, these expenditures lead to additional job creation and economic growth by way of the economic multiplier effect. The presence of an art museum in a municipality goes far beyond the financial aspect. The educational and cultural experiences the Gibbes offers are unique and provide a service to the Charleston community that is irreplaceable. With works from local sweetgrass basket maker Mary Jackson, to works honoring those from the Emanuel AME Church tragedy, the Gibbes embraces art relevant to the local community creating a connection and an understanding between the viewer and the artwork.

– Local patrons often visit restaurants, shops, and other attractions when visiting the peninsula. Tourists visiting the Museum SPEND ADDITIONAL MONEY IN CHARLESTON for lodging, food, entertainment, and general shopping. – Museums and nonprofits return more than $5 dollars in tax revenue for every $1 dollar they receive in funding from different levels of government, meaning the government has more incentive to invest in the arts and cultural because of the HIGH RETURN ON INVESTMENT.

“It’s a different place. The bones are the same. But the grandeur, the power, the beauty of the place and the space and the building—and then the capacities that it has to serve this community and the region—are extraordinary. This is such an important part of the physical, cultural, artistic renaissance of our community.”

“The Gibbes is the jewel of Charleston. The stained glass dome, the amazing art work, the artists in residence and the buzzing cafe. It makes an already fantastic city even more special”

“To say that the Gibbes is a place where art nourishes, challenges, inspires, deepens and expands perspectives is no exaggeration. The exhibitions and programs—and yes, even the building itself —are extraordinary. My favorites are too many to list. The recent Jacob Lawrence exhibition, the Mary Jackson sweetgrass baskets, the vibrant paintings of Jonathan Green, the moving “The Things We Carry” exhibition, the lectures, stimulating panel discussions, conversations with artists, and educational programming are just the tip of the iceberg. The Gibbes—truly a Charleston and national treasure!” — DEBORAH KENNEDY KENNARD, GIBBES BOARD MEMBER AND ATTORNEY
